hile ghost estates are serious problem in this country, and in the northwest in particular, one of main options being considered to deal with the debacle may give rise to some controversy. It is clear that the Fianna Fail/Green government had been in contact with English housing agencies with a view to bringing them into the country to buy

up ghost estates which would then be run as social housing. It was reported last November that there are 2,846 ‘ghost estates’ in the country and the northwest has more than its fair share. The website irelandafternama.com breaks down the number of these estates by county and there at the very top is Leitrim, followed by Roscommon, Longford and Sligo. It is therefore of paramount importance for the northwest that these es-

tates are dealt with before they become a long-term infrastructural problem and eyesore. However, little has been done to deal with the ghost estate problem . . .‘til now. In a desperate bid to do something about the widespread number of useless, unmarketable and unfinished ‘ghost estates’ around the country and on the books of NAMA the previous government looked to foreign housing agencies to buy the properties in return

for a confirmed period of rent. It was reported in English housing magazine, Inside, that former Minister for Housing, Michael Finneran and the Housing and Sustainable Communities Agency, the state agency for co-ordinating housing policy between local and national government, attended meetings with the English agencies to construct a formula for the sale of some of these estates. Drastic Options for Ghost Estates! Continued from front page The idea is that English housing agencies would buy empty and unfinished properties, finish them and keep them in good repair. They would then be provided to the people on the local authority waiting list for that area and the government would pay rent to them at a discount market rate as well as the tenant paying a small rent. When contacted by The Northwest Express, British housing agency, ‘Places for People’ confirmed that they were in discussions with the government along with other interested parties. What are housing agencies? They are for the most part charities that work alongside local authorities and national governments to provide so-

cial housing and services. They can be privately funded or state funded. Ireland has in the region of 600 housing agencies. The Northwest Express spoke to one of Ireland’s largest housing agencies, Respond, who have been crying out for co-operation from the government. “We were disappointed to say the least at reports that [they] actually travelled to England to encourage English housing agencies. We would prefer them to try and work with us so that we could buy some of these ghost estates.” Respond used to get nearly 100 per cent funding for its projects under the 1991 Cash and Loan Subsidy Scheme, but that has fallen away to

nearly zero since the crash arrived. They can’t realistically ask the public for donations for projects of the scale they undertake so they are now seeking funding from banks. Respond take a dim view of Irish housing policy. “What tended to happen in housing in Ireland in the past were reactionary measures to deal with problems and that would explain a lot of what we’re dealing with now in terms of ghost estates, people in negative equity and local authority housing waiting lists that are estimated to be at 130,000 households or 300,000 people.” Respond sees this attempt to entice English housing agencies to buy up ghost estates as part of those bad short-term decisions that riddle much of Irish governmental policy-making past and present. “I think the concern would be that this is a short-term ad hoc measure that we’ll actually end-up paying more for in the longer-term.” The new cabinet includes a Super-Junior Minister for Housing and Planning, Willie Penrose and Respond are calling on him and his government to rethink this policy, and develop a longterm integrated housing strategy by working with those actually on the ground like Respond. “I think the Dept and the new Minister for Housing should engage with the Social Housing sector in Ireland before they start looking elsewhere.” The Department of the Environment is carrying out a survey of ‘ghost estates’ around the country. The interim report of the National Survey of Ongoing House Developments was published during the election. The survey has been carried out on 2,846 estates with 121,275 houses. Of those 33,226 were vacant or incomplete while 9,854 houses were only partly constructed. It also says that, “the overhang of new but unoccupied dwellings was relatively modest in the main urbanised areas but

more pronounced in areas such as in the Midlands and Border regional authority areas.” The survey identifies 400 estates where there are less than a 50% occupancy rate and that in extreme cases local authorities should “acquire all or parts of an estate under the Derelict Sites Act or other legislation.” It also states that the problem of oversupply will be most difficult in areas like Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and the northwest in general. “The greatest difficulty will be addressing and resolving developments in rural, low demand areas.” The survey’s interim recommendations are that immediate public safety measures be put in place, that information be continually gathered and monitored and that local authorities be funded and empowered adequately to deal with the problem estates. What does the new government plan to do about it? The past government made available €5 million to address immediate public safety concerns, though this equates to just under €15,000 per estate. The programme for government says little on the problem of ghost estates. In terms of social housing the programme promises a “staged purchase scheme” which will involve private investment for social housing which will then revert to the state after a period of time. This reflects the ‘Social Housing Leasing Initiative’ that groups like Respond would like to see put in place. Also to help groups like Respond to get funding the government will issue ‘social housing bonds’ on the value of their housing stock. Time will tell how this major problem will be dealt with. The foreign agency option may seem unpalatable at a conceptual level. However, it is vital that this issue be tackled immediately before some of the housing stock deteriorates further and demolition, rather than preservation, will become the most economic option.

Global audience for Swinford St. Patrick’s Day parade Japan, Chile, America and Singapore were just a sample of the countries with Mayo natives that logged onto www.mayotv.ie over the weekend and watched all the colour and pageantry of the 60th Swinford St. Patrick’s Day parade unfold live on MAYO TV. “The reaction to the live broadcast on MAYO TV has been phenomenal. We had people in Australia, America and all over England logged on and watching. We are inundated with messages of goodwill from people all over the world that watched the entire broadcast. It was a great opportunity to showcase Swinford and Mayo to the world”, commented Joe Mellett, Chairperson of the parade committee. The 60th Swinford St. Patrick’s Day parade was full of pageantry and colour with every strand of the community represented. Mr. Mellett thanked the community for their support in making the 60th parade the best ever. The theme for the 60th Swinford

St. Patrick’s Day parade was ‘Remember The Good Old Days’ and the entire community came out in their droves to watch it. “I am sure that the good old days will return very soon. We have a new Taoiseach from Mayo in Enda Kenny and there is great hope now for the future,” commented Mellett. MAYO TV presenter Piaras O’ Reilly stated the live broadcast on MAYO TV was watched all over the world. “It was fitting that one of the oldest and longest established parades in the country was also the first ever to be broadcast live on MAYO TV,” stated O’Reilly The Grand Marshall for the Swinford St. Patrick’s Day parade was Irish and UK martial arts champion sixteen-year-old local lad Aaron McLoughlin. regionalnews Sligo and Mayo Hotel Room Rates Remain Stable MAYO was the only destination in Ireland to experience an increase in room rates where prices rose by 3% from 78 to 81 yearon-year. Also, Sligo was not too far behind being one of the only towns in Ireland not to experience a significant fall in its hotel rates, according to the latest Hotels.com® Hotel Price Index™ (HPI®). Room rates in Sligo fell by just 1 in 2010 to 85 per night compared to 86 in 2009. This indicates that the hotel market in Mayo and Sligo appears to be stablising. Even on a national level, the rate at which hotel prices are falling is also beginning to slow down with prices down 4% year-on-

year compared to a 21% year-on-year fall in 2009. The average hotel price in Ireland is now 79 per night, much better value than heretofore. The Hotels.com Hotel Price Index (HPI®) is a survey of hotel prices in major city destinations across the world. The HPI is based on bookings made on Hotels.com across 130,000 and 18,000 destinations, and prices shown are those actually paid by customers (rather than advertised rates) in 2010 compared to those paid in 2009. In Dublin, Hotel rates fell 6% year-on-year from 78 to 73 making Dublin one of the best value city destinations in the world. Dublin experienced a higher drop in prices than

any other major Western European city with hotel prices significantly lower than destinations such as London (135), Paris (120),Amsterdam (115) and Rome (113). Kilkenny saw its room prices fall by 19% in 2010 but despite this significant price drop it is still the most expensive destination in Ireland at 112 (down from 138 in 2009). Wexford (109) and Killarney (96) also experienced double digit percentage drops of 12% and 11% respectively but still managed to make it into the top five most expensive Irish destinations. Waterford is the least expensive destination in the country with rooms averaging at 56 (down 8%) per night.

together in 2008. They have recently played the Special Olympics in Limerick, the Kilkenny Comedy Fringe, the Body & Soul Global Gathering in Co. Meath and the Electric Picnic in Stradbally, Co. Laois. Choke Comedy also host their monthly residency in The Loft Venue, Limerick. Choke’s improv comedy is based on material suggested by the audience. The most famous exponents of improv comedy include Paul Merton and the team on ‘Who’s Line Is It Anyway’. Speaking about the challenge, organiser John Loftus said “laughter is always the best medicine; my own interest in improv came from taking part in a number of improv workshops during Limerick’s Mental Health Week which were focused on awareness & creativity.” He added “laughing is one of the best positive mental health exercises you can do and Choke Comedy picked Headstrong because they are plugged into young people. They put young people right at the centre of their work.” Explaining why Choke Comedy chose the 32 County Comedy Challenge, John said “we

need to open up the messy conversation around youth mental health in a safe way, because we all feel the same feelings and comedy is a great way of illuminating real life. It allows us to say the unsayable and speak honestly to our audience when we are up on stage, also the key principles of improvisation are listening, saying yes and commitment – key communication & creativity skills”. The show hits the road on Tuesday March 29th when the group will head out on their epic 1,400km journey playing in all sorts of locations but with the same end goal of making people laugh and raising the awareness of Headstrong’s work in the area of youth mental health. John finished by saying “people have been very generous to date with the offer of venues, raffle prizes and support but we need all the help we can get to make this a success and raise as much money as possible. For those that can’t come to one of their shows there is a My Charity page where people make donations http://www.mycharity.ie/event/ch oke_improvs_event/ .”

The cross-border body is holding a 2-day ‘Go-2Tender’ workshop in the Harlequin Hotel, Castlebar on 13th and 27th April to help firms increase their chances of success when competing for public sector contracts North and South. Jenny Williamson, InterTradeIreland Go2Tender project manager, explains: “Despite significant cuts in spending, the public sector market remains a huge and underexploited market for many firms. As buyers are tasked with finding new and innovative solutions for their needs, SMEs are particularly well placed to meet these demands because of their size and flexibility. By taking part in the programme, companies will get a better understanding of the public sector market across the island and how they can increase their chances of success when competing for Government contracts.” Places are limited, so register now. Family Carers urged to be counted in Census 2011

IN 2010, the Central Statistics Office estimated that Ireland could now have as many as 274,000 family carers, an in-

crease nationwide of almost 71 percent in the number of carers counted in the last census in 2006. The Carer’s Count

Campaign, a public information campaign designed to inform Sligo carers about census 2011, launched in Sligo recently aims to inform all carers that question 22, which refers to “unpaid help”, is about family carers and to ensure that all family carers in Sligo and throughout Ireland, answer this question. The Census will also recognise young carers for the first time.A young carer is someone under the age of 15 whose life is affected in a significant way by the need to provide care for a family or household member who has an illness, disability, addiction or other care requirement. Accurate figures on the number of young carers and the extent of care that they provide will enable the planning and provision of better support services. According to the Carers Count Campaign organisers, an alliance of ten care related groups, Census 2011 provides a unique opportunity to quantify the number of unpaid work provided by family carers.

1 million in funding for local arts groups THE Arts Council, the Irish government agency for funding and developing the arts, is to invest more than 1 million in six Sligo based organisations with a proven track record of delivering great arts experiences for people. The Blue Raincoat Theatre Company will continue to entertain audiences with their unique productions. The company’s strong artistic reputation and national touring programme has meant it has become a vital part of Ireland’s artistic landscape. The Helium Children’s Arts and Health, an arts and health company aimed at transforming the health care experience for their children and their families in Sligo, will also receive funding. Over its short two-year lifetime, it has made great advances in its goal to become an organisation of national importance in the areas of health, arts and children.

The organisation will use any monies received to further develop the technology it uses in delivering high quality arts programmes in hospital settings in Sligo, Donegal and Dublin.

The Model in Sligo promises an impressive series of exhibitions and will also present an outreach and education programme including its work with the Young Model, an initiative for young people

interested in art, film and music. The Arts Council will also support the Hawk’s Well Theatre, Kid’s Own and the Sligo County Council’s Arts Programme.

Youth Groups invited to enter Youth Citizenship Awards YOUTH groups across the Northwest are invited to enter the 2011 ‘permanent tsb Foróige Youth Citizenship Awards’ which enable young people to make a positive difference to the world around them. The awards are all about positivity and energy, and are an opportunity for local youth groups to showcase the valuable work they do in the community. As well as being involved in Regional Awards and a National Citizenship Awards Event in the Helix in Dublin, a number of groups will have the chance to be profiled in a two-part TV series called ‘Ireland’s Top Teens’ which will be aired on TV3 later in the autumn. Groups interested in entering should contact Rosie O’Brien, Citizenship Programme Officer, Foróige or rosie.obrien@foroige.ie or on 086 6064110 or download the application from www.youthcitizenship.ie. Now more than ever we need this get up and go attitude to bring communities together. We want as many young people from your county as possible to get involved." Gerry Loughrey, Head of Corporate Responsibility at permanent tsb said, "There is no doubt that through these awards we will witness some great stories about inspiring young people who have taken on vital responsibilities rooted in a deep pride of parish and of community."

Testimonials from Satisfied Customers Donal O’Connor - Dairy Farmer, Carney, Co. Sligo The well on this farm is servicing 150+ dairy cows, and provides approximately 20,000 litres of clean water per day. After drilling this well, the water was found to be badly contaminated with sulphur and iron. These two elements are among the toughest to deal with in a water supply, but thanks to Grant Water, a treatment system was designed and built to cope with the volumes of water used and the level of contamination. This system resulted in a substantial annual saving on the cost of the farm’s water supply.

President Obama may enjoy a round of Golf in Mayo

US President Barack Obama announced last week that he intends to visit Ireland in May, and may visit County Mayo during his time here. President Obama made the announcement when he met the

Taoiseach Enda Kenny at the White House on St. Patricks Day. The President intends to visit “all the famous sites” as well as his ancestral home of Moneygall, Co. Offaly. Although there is no official date

for the Irish visit yet it is thought that it might coincide with Obama’s three day visit to the UK in May, ahead of a G8 summit of world leaders in France. News of this visit is welcome for

New travel book features Mayo walking routes

the Irish tourism industry and will be a great boost for Co. Mayo if President Obama does decide to visit and enjoy a round of golf with the Taoiseach. He may do so as it is the home county of Mr. Kenny and because the parents of Patricia Rooney, wife of US ambassador, Dan Rooney were born there. Mr Kenny called the visit “another great day in our country’s journey” and said it was “a very significant statement of confidence by the most powerful political office in the world that the president of the United States decides to come to Ireland in May . . . If you want to do a round of golf I’d be happy to participate with you”. Mr Obama said he had heard the Taoiseach was “pretty good, so . . . I may have to practise before I play with him”. If Mr. Kenny is able to persuade President Obama to play a round of golf with him in Mayo it would be a huge boost to tourism in the economy and an opportunity to showcase what Mayo has to offer golfers and tourists from all over the world.

Sligo based food producer wins prestigious award

Lindy O'Hara of Coopershill Farm, second from right. with top chef Darina Allen and the other recipients of the award

SLIGO’S Coopershill House in Riverstown has been awarded the Prestigious Irish Food Writers’

Guild Food award for the quality of their speciality, home produced venison. The awards highlight the

vital work of small, independent food producers at a time when supporting Irish produced foods is of upmost importance. Coopershill House Irish Venison was the recipient of one of only five awards. Lindy and Brian O’Hara began rearing deer in 1995 and now, having handed the running of the Georgian Country House to their son Brian, Lindy manages the deer enterprise. Guild members were highly impressed by the quality, tenderness and presentation of Coopershill House Venison. Their deer lead a natural free range life, grazing on hilly land that has been grassland for fifty years, encouraging a variety of natural herbage which contributes to the fine flavour of the venison. Now in its 17th year, the Irish Food Writers Guild Awards promote and reward the highest qual-

ity produce and have been described as the most important food awards in Ireland. This year’s awards were presented by one of Ireland’s best known chefs, Darina Allen, who commented, “Ireland is one of Europe’s largest dairy and beef exporters, and home to several world-class firms and hundreds of food artisans. All this comes at a time when the global demand for food is projected to increase by 70 per cent over the next 40 years. “The affluent world is demanding locally grown, non-polluting, traceable, transparent food, exactly what we in Ireland can produce. Thus, recognising the opportunities for Ireland Inc., we need to encourage the brightest and best to pursue a career in all aspects of food production, distribution and marketing to drive the Irish food industry into the future.”

TWO of Mayo’s finest walking routes are featured in a new book by Christopher Sommerville, one of the UK’s best known travel writers. The book, ‘Walking in Ireland – fifty walks through the heart and soul of Ireland’, brings together a comprehensive guide to the fifty most stunning walks in Ireland and includes the Children of Lir Loop in Carrowteige and Clogher Bog. Walking is a very popular pastime in Ireland and this beautifully written and well researched guide allows Mr. Somerville to draw on his popular column for the Irish Independent to present fifty most popular walks in Ireland. It is hoped that the book will entice more people to consider Ireland as a holiday destination. Recent figures show that walking in Ireland is one of the top activities enjoyed by holidaymakers with over 1.6 million taking part during 2009. Research by Failte Ireland also shows that walking is extremely popular with both domestic holidaymakers and overseas visitors enjoying the wide range of walking facilities during the same period.

efore the recent general election, there was a lot of talk in the media about the lack of women in the political sphere, and although women take part in politics, they are widely underrepresented. Miriam O’Callaghan pointed this out when she revealed she had yet to have a woman in the hot seat in any of the leader’s debates she has hosted.

The recession is also heightening family tensions; money worries bring about increased stress among couples and research has indicated that this is contributing to a dramatic rise in domestic violence. Domestic violence is not always physical and this recession has seen financial abuse; when the abuser has control over the victim’s money or other economic resources, become more prevalent. Women who are victims of domestic abuse are now in a far more vulnerable position as they don’t have access to money to even contemplate going out on their own.

RECESSION ADDING TO WOMEN’S WOES!

Niamh Wilson, Manager of Domestic Violence Advocacy Service (DVAS) for Sligo, Leitrim and West Cavan, says that they have been busier than they have ever been since June of last year.

M

iriam O’Callaghan revealed she had yet to have a woman in the hot seat in any of the leader’s debates she has hosted. The results of the general election revealed that out of thirty seats up for grabs in the Northwest, only one woman was elected, despite the fact that women make up around 51 per cent of the electorate. This seat was taken by Fine Gael candidate Michelle Mulherin, who won a seat for Fine Gael in the Mayo constituency. Furthermore, in a government which is now headed up by a Mayo man, only two women have secured top cabinet posts. There are very few who have not been affected by the deep recession Ireland has sunk in to and in many areas, women and men are affected differently. Without women in power to represent the female population; key issues may not be addressed. Research has shown that women, despite their critical role in the workforce and in raising families, are more vulnerable during times of recession.

She conceded that although the service was only set up in 2004 and it takes a number of years for a domestic violence service to become established; they have definitely seen a surge in recent times. If a violent man loses his job, he is liable to become aggressive about appropriating other sources of money. This might mean child benefit, or if the woman is working, it may mean her wages. If she too is unemployed, the situation may become even more desperate with both of them at home all day. Niamh says that a number of women they are working with at the moment are dealing with financial abuse.

O

nly one woman was elected, in the Northwest, despite the fact that women make up around 51 per cent of the electorate. This seat was taken by Fine Gael candidate Michelle Mulherin, who won a seat for Fine Gael in the Mayo constituency.

“Financial abuse has always been a factor, but is a bit more prevalent now. It is definitely now more centre stage.” She says figures from DVAS show that in 2009, they dealt with 2,136 helpline calls with 2,840 in 2010. DVAS also deals with advocacy on behalf of women, and in 2010 they made 820 advocacy calls with 546 in 2009. In addition, Niamh reported that January of this year has been ‘incredibly busy’ with 12 people looking to get out of their homes and into accommodation; more than they have ever had in one month. There is no refuge for victims of domestic violence in Sligo, Leitrim or West Cavan and only two out of

these twelve women were able to be accommodated, meaning that ten were forced to go back to an abusive home. Rent allowance has been reduced twice in recent times along with child benefit cuts, many women are now unemployed and facing cuts in social welfare payments. As well as this, community welfare officers have little access to emergency funding to deal with crisis situations. These are all barriers for women trying to get out of violent situations and have all been brought about by the downturn. Another issue is the increasing number of women who are considering terminating pregnancies as a direct result of the recession.

THERE ARE VERY FEW WHO HAVE NOT BEEN AFFECTED BY THE DEEP RECESSION IRELAND HAS SUNK IN TO AND IN MANY AREAS, WOMEN AND MEN ARE AFFECTED DIFFERENTLY. Financial concerns are cited as playing a large part in their decision. Although this has always been a factor; in recent times the priority has shifted very narrowly in terms of income security.Women are fearful that they will lose their job, or their hours have already been cut or their husband or partners have taken a cut, so it is a very specific concern about income security or whether or not they will be able to afford to have a child.

Charlotte Keery, a spokesperson for CURA Sligo (CURA is a voluntary organisation which helps those facing crisis pregnancy) says that in a depression, unexpected pregnancy certainly causes more concerns. A situation that may not have been a problem a few years ago now raises serious alarm regarding whether or not the mother, or mother and partner, will have the means to care for a child. The Well Woman Centre in

Queuing for the Dole

W

omen who are victims of domestic abuse are now in a far more vulnerable position as they don’t have access to money to even contemplate going out on their own.

Dublin last year published a report which said that there were more women considering terminating pregnancies as a direct result of the recession and found a large rise in the number of women attending its counselling services. Ms. Keery conceded that in these times an unplanned pregnancy could cause Irish women to seek an abortion, and it is not only younger women who are seeking them. The women seeking counselling in CURA Sligo and in their 16 other centres around the country range in ages from teenagers to women in their 40s. As well as the financial stability is-

sues, for many women the workplace is a hostile environment, with less opportunity to climb to the higher echelons because of time given to family commitments. Most recently we saw the female Aer Lingus staff going on strike because of roster changes the staff deemed to be “Anti family.” As it is, many women have found there is a ‘glass ceiling’ in some industries, where they only progress to a certain stage. In Public Relations, for instance, the profession is dominated by women by a ratio of 70 to 30, yet the majority of the senior positions are occupied by men.

In these tough economic times when we have gone back to the old saying “you’re lucky you have a job” it is little wonder that an increasing number of women are apprehensive about having children. Although woman are not obliged to vote along the lines of gender, and many clearly choose party policies or loyalties to influence their decisions; with only one woman elected in any of the constituencies throughout the Northwest, in the most important election in the State’s history, it could be said that issues like these, and others, will yet again be sidelined with not enough women to influence decisions.

Vatican Facebook page for John Paul

science news & technology

New Camera can Shoot Colour Photos in the Dark THE Vatican will unveil the latest instalment in its social media transformation next week a Facebook page dedicated to the upcoming beatification of Pope John Paul II, officials said. The site, which will link to video highlights of John Paul's 27-year papacy, is designed to promote the May 1 beatification. But it may well continue beyond given the global and enduring interest in the late pontiff, Vatican officials said. The Vatican's first attempt at an eventthemed Facebook page - to promote Pope Benedict XVI's September trip to the United Kingdom - is still active six months later and updated near-daily with 10,000-15,000 regular fans checking in, said Monsignor Paul Tighe, the number two in the Vatican's social communications office. "What we found is that Facebook doesn't just share information, it creates community," Mgr Tighe said in an interview. "People begin talking to each other and sharing ideas." That interactivity - and the potential it brings to the church's evangelisation mission - is behind the Vatican's new social media push, the culmination of which will be launched at Easter with a new Vatican information web portal whose contents are specifically designed to be tweeted, posted and blogged. The portal will serve as a one-stopshop aggregator of news from the Vatican's various information sources: Vatican Radio, Vatican Television, the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, the Holy See's press office and Fides, the Vatican's missionary news agency, Mr Tighe said. The Vatican's current website - www.vatican.va - will remain since that is more of a stable site with basic information about the Holy See, key Vatican documents and offices, and papal activities. The new site, rolled out first in English and Italian and then other languages, will be more news-based, bringing together onto one page the current disorganised web presence of Vatican media.

Royal wedding invite from Google MILLIONS of royal wedding enthusiasts around the world will wish they could be among the people lining the streets of London on April 29, hoping to catch a glimpse of Prince William and Kate Middleton on their big day. And now, thanks to the internet, they will be able to experience the couple's route "virtually" from the comfort of their own home. Google Earth users can see 3D images of the wedding route, including central London's famous landmarks - Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square, the London Eye and British Museum. The technology even allows web surfers to "fly" through the procession route.

RESEARCHERS from the Nanosystem Research Division of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) were able to come up with a new technology that makes use of infrared radiation in order to help the user take color pictures in the dark. It would be worth noting, however, that the shot images do not have the exact shades. In the future researchers look forward to improving the camera, so it would make images with more colors and even shoot video that would look as though it was shot during the day. It is worth mentioning that the camera uses very sensitive infrared photography technology. The latter scans the surroundings in order to generate a digital layout. Following the production of the digital picture,

the camera generates different algorithms that scan the wavelengths just when the nearby objects are lighted up by the infrared radiation. The next step involves the camera deciding upon the basis of the wavelengths generated by the colors of the objects and enriching the picture with colors. Researchers say that the camera can be used in different ways, including wildlife tracking and in the development of next-gen security cameras. Currently the team works on making the camera more compact and durable. In addition, researchers are developing a new lens that would allow capturing pictures from a distance. It was said that a commercial version of the device is expected to hit the stores by the end of 2011.

The screwdriver-powered car HIS amazing contraption is perhaps the most eccentric 'car' ever made. Want proof? Look no further than what propels it - a pair of household screwdrivers. The EX three-wheeler has a top speed of 19mph and is the brainchild of fine arts student Nils Ferber. It was built by a team from Hamburg University, where Ferber is a fine arts student, reportedly at a cot of ÂŁ860. According to Ferber, the trike was one of the least spectacular ideas he and the team had. He said that the EX is built to: "Prove that it doesn't need huge engines and a lot of horse-

power to move a person around." The pair of unmodified 18-volt Bosch screwdrivers powers a vehicle made mostly from modified bicycle parts. They turn a chain linkage connected to the back wheel and are activated by twisting the handlebar grips, like a motorbike. The driver faces the floor and steers by tilting his or her whole body in the desired direction. According to Ferber's website, the EX: "Gives you an exciting driving experience". There's no word on production yet, but the zero-emissions vehicle would definitely be a fun way to combat fuel prices.

Web inventor nominated for award THE man who invented the world wide web more than 20 years ago and the co-founder of Google are in the running for the inaugural "Mikhail Gorbachev: the man who changed the world" awards. Computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee made the first proposal for the web back in 1989 while Sergey Brin help found the popular search engine. The awards have been set up by the former Soviet leader, who won a Nobel Peace Prize in

1992, to mark his 80th birthday earlier this month. Mr Gorbachev said: "The people nominated for the inaugural Gorbachev Awards have already made a significant contribution to the world and changed the way we live our lives today. "Selecting just nine people has been very hard and we are delighted that the people we have nominated bring such a diverse range of skills and achievements to the awards,

and the values the awards stand for." Sir Tim is one of three people short-listed for the "Perestroika: For contribution to the development of global civilisation" award while Mr Brin is in the running for the "Uskorenie: For contribution to the development of modern science and technology" accolade. The winners will be announced at a gala concert at London's Royal Albert Hall on March 30.

Snake dies after biting silicone breast

Man gets parking ticket after 30 seconds A huge snake which bit a model's surgically enhanced breast later died from silicone poisoning. Israeli model Orit Fox was posing with the snake at a photoshoot in Tel Aviv when it suddenly turned on her. She was holding the boa constrictor and went to lick its head when it suddenly tired of the attention and latched on to her left breast. Footage of the incident on Spanish TV channel Telecino has notched up nearly a quarter of a million hits on YouTube. As the snake bit Fox, a man rushed over to help her and remove the snake from her breast. The model was taken to Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera, northwest of Jerusalem, but later released after a tetanus shot and a few hours of observation. But the snake did not fare so well. Days later, Telecinco reported that the creature had died of silicone poisoning. Fox is regarded as Israel's version of Katie Price and has undergone several operations to enlarge her breasts.

Horse shoes for humans on sale

DESIGNER shoes made in the style of horses' hooves have gone on sale for £1,300 a pair at the Cheltenham Festival. The knee and ankle-length zip-up hoof boots were created as the perfect thing to wear for a day at the races. Each one features an imitation carbon-fibre hoof and up to 5,000 individual genuine horse hairs. Fashion designers were commissioned by betting company Betfair to create the boots to celebrate 100 years of the festival. All proceeds will go to charity. Andy Lulham from Betfair said: "As one of the most prestigious events in the horseracing calendar we wanted to celebrate the centenary of Cheltenham in style. "Not only will our punters win bigger with Betfair, but they'll also be a shoe-in for best dressed on course." Louise Dainton, 25, from Essex, who posed on a turf catwalk wearing the human horseshoes, said: "They are really comfortable and make you feel like you want to get on the track and gallop down the final furlong. "I'm not sure they are for everyone, but I definitely want a pair of hooves."

A motorist was furious to return to his car and find a warden issuing a parking ticket only 30 seconds after he'd parked there. 29-year-old Andrew Oxley had found a space in Exeter Central Train Station car park, and had gone to pay for a ticket. On his return he found a warden writing out a £75 penalty fine. The female warden, from Premier Parking Solutions (PPS), was taking a photograph of his car and warned him that failure to pay within seven days would see the fine jump to £100. PPS has been accused of overzealous ticket issuing before, and was recently criticised for handing a £75 fine to a

man in the same car park who had left his car for four minutes. He too was paying for a ticket at the time. In this case Mr Oxley is refusing to pay the fine, and is willing to take the matter through the courts; his appeal to PPS has so far yielded no response, and PPS has not commented on the case. Mr Oxley said: "The only thing I can say is that I must be the only driver in Exeter to be done for parking for leaving his car for a matter of seconds. I've worked it out that PPS are demanding £3 per second." According to research by car insurer LV, in 2010 UK drivers paid almost £60m in parking fines when they actually had grounds for appeal.

Air guitar T-shirt up for award A T-shirt which can be played like a guitar has been shortlisted for a technology award in the United States. Design company FauvelKhan, founded by Swansea Metropolitan students Luke Khan and Warren Fauvel, is in the running for the Music-Related Technologies accolade at the SXSW Accelerator event in Austin, Texas. Its entry, the only one from the European Union, is an AiR Guitar, which turns a T-shirt into a playable musical instrument. The T-shirt has a barcode-type symbol which, when picked up via a webcam, can trigger notes to be

played on a computer. The pair initially developed the idea as a promotional item for South Wales band The Last Republic, but hope it will now prove to be a hit across the music industry. Mr Khan, an industrial design graduate from Cardiff, said: "It was a surprise to be the only Europeanbased company shortlisted. "To be selected for the final eight from 400 worldwide entries is testament to the creative and hardworking team we have. "SXSW puts us on the world stage and it's exciting to think of what this means for the company going forward."

Man plans to live on beer for Lent A US newspaper editor is planning to abstain from solid food for Lent - and will instead live on just beer and water. J Wilson, 38, of Prescott, near Des Moines, Iowa, plans to drink four beers a day and says he does not intend to get drunk. He plans to recreate the lives of 17th century German monks who brewed a heavy "liquid bread" beer to keep them going through Lent. "I did a 36-hour test drive about a week ago, and I don't think four beers is going to be a problem," he said. "But I don't know what will happen after days of not eating at all. That's one of the questions I am looking to answer. "Getting drunk is the last thing on

my to-do list at this time. This is an historical study." Mr Wilson, a keen home brewer, will live on his own version of the doppelbock beer developed for Lent more than 300 years ago by the Paulaner monks. He plans to record his experiences in a blog, entitled Diary of a Part-Time Monk, reports the Des Moines Register. Mr Wilson said he was working with a doctor on his project and would be checked over before, during and after his 46 day diet. The specially brewed 'Illuminator Doppelbock' beer he will drink is 6.67 per cent alcohol and has 288 calories per 355ml serving.

By incorporating bursts of intensity into a shorter workout, you'll reap many benefits of a longer exercise routine (like more energy and improved heart function). Walking is one of the best methods of shedding the pounds. It's a good idea to check with a health professional and ask their opinion before undertaking any exercise, especially if it has been a while since you have undertaken any fitness program or exercise. Start off gently, and work within your comfort zone. Increase your effort gradually over several weeks.Maintain regular breathing throughout the exercises, try not to hold your breath your muscles need oxygen! Try to keep strict form with control, not using momentum. Do not undertake any exercise if you are in pain or feeling unwell. If you feel faint, dizzy or unwell while exercising stop immediately. Back Exercise is an important part of your regular exercise regime and done correctly can help you minimise problems through back pain. With back exercise it is especially important to make sure that you do not over exert yourself, and warm up thoroughly before exercise. Wall Slides are a great way to strengthen your back (along with hips and leg muscles). Stand with your back against a wall and feet shoulder-width apart. Slide down into a crouch with knees bent to about 90 degrees, keeping within your comfort zone. Hold in this position for four or five seconds. Slowly slide back up the wall to the starting position. Repeat the exercise 5 times initially and build up repetitions as you become stronger. leg Raises are a great way to get back muscle exercise. Check these pages out for the individual exercises. Back leg Swing strengthen the lower back, and if done gently is a very low impact exercise. Stand behind a chair with your hands resting on the back of the chair (this will help you balance during the exercise). Lift one leg back out behind you while keeping both legs straight. Slowly return to the start position. Repeat the exercise for a further four repetitions.

Knee Raises Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Throughout the exercise keep the base of your spine pushed down onto the floor. Raise your knees toward your chest. Place both hands under your knees and gently pull your knees up towards your chest. Keep your head and shoulders on the floor. Do not straighten your legs as you lower them. Start with five repetitions, and increase the number as you become stronger. Abdominal Exercise can make a real difference to the way you look, but you have to be careful with the type of exercises that you do. Ensure when you do ab exercise that you support your back as much as possible throughout. There is no easy route to a firm stomach - you are going to have to work! The upper and lower abdominal muscles are not really separate muscles and as such cannot truly be isolated by a single abdominal exercise, exercises stress the whole abdominal region. However, some exercises will tend towards developing either the upper or the lower, depending on what you are after. We've divided the exercises into upper and lower ab exercises. You can focus on the upper clusters by moving just the torso and the lower clusters by moving the pelvis.

Crunches). Like ab crunches, you start by lying on the floor with your knees bent. Instead of crunching forwards and backwards you should crunch diagonally so that you try to move each shoulder toward the opposite hip, moving shoulders alternately. At the top position, one shoulder and one hip should be off the ground. Ensure every crunch is done slowly to get the maximum benefit.

If you have not done any abdominal exercise recently then you should start with a few easy exercises. Try the Front Leg Raise, the Stomach Tuck-In and Waist Twists. These exercises will prepare you for more intense ab exercises. Once you feel more comfortable with these exercises you can move onto both the lower abdominal exercise and the upper abdominal exercise. If you feel any discomfort during any of these abdominal exercises then stop exercising. Keep your movements smooth and slow, and do not overexert yourself. As with any exercise you should warm up beforehand, and make sure that you have consulted your medical practitioner. Reverse Crunch Lying on your back on the floor, hold onto a table leg to help keep your torso against the floor throughout the exercise. Keep the knees slightly bent. Pull your pelvis and legs up slowly so that your knees are above your chest. Slowly return to beginning position. Cross-Knee Crunches The Cross-Knee Crunch is a slight variation on the regular crunch (which you can find out about along with the sit-up at Sit Ups and

give a great 5 min massage! NOT many things top a shoulder and neck massage. And just about everyone knows even a simple back massage or shoulder rub can be incredibly relaxing.

Now, giving a professional therapeutic mas sage is something that definitely requires train ing and years of practice. But, there are some techniques you can use to perform a short, safe and simple massage for the shoulders and neck. In fact, these simple massage techniques can be done literally anywhere. At a desk at work or at the kitchen table at home while your part ner sits in a regular chair. Of course, you won’t be able to fix tendonitis or correct chronic headaches, but you’ll certainly be able to help someone else release some tension and relax a little. A Mini lesson On The Muscles you will be Massaging The shoulder muscle is called the trapezius, or sometimes just the traps. This is easy to re member because it’s where most of us trap our tension. In the back of your neck are your ex tensor muscles which hold your head upright. Poor posture and long periods sitting at com puters can cause these muscles to become very tender, tight and achy. Finally, the base of your skull is where your extensors attach into your head. For The Person Receiving Massage…Permission First! 1. Check with the other person to be sure they want a massage. While most people enjoy and gladly welcome a quick shoulder rub, permis sion is an absolute must before starting to knead those muscles. 2. Do not do this massage if the person has any severe pain or has had any recent injuries to the shoulder or neck areas. While the massage may feel good, it could aggravate their condition.

3. Check in every so often to be sure the pressure is com fortable. This massage should not be painful. It should only feel good. Pain will make your partner tense up and defeat the purpose of the massage. 4. Bones don’t relax! Which means something that feels hard like a bone probably is and it shouldn’t be massaged. Bones also tend to be pain sen sitive. So, everything you mas sage should feel relatively soft.

For The Person Giving The Massage…Don’t Wreck Your Body! Chances are, if you’ve ever tried to give a massage before, the other person ended up re laxed and you wound up with arms and hands that ached. So here are some simple guide lines that should let you give a relaxing massage without sac rificing your body: 1. Drop your shoulders. 2. Keep your back straight. 3. Don’t bend excessively. 4. Relax your hands between each movement. 5. Keep a slow, even pace. 6. Minimize the use of your thumbs. 7. Breathe! (Shoulders) Stand behind your partner. Rest your fore arms on the top of their shoulders as close to their neck as possible. Keep your palms down so the fleshy part of your forearm, not the bony part, lies on the muscle. Galway races opens as summer festival

blast past from the

Looking back at the 50’s

All Ireland glory for Mayo and Galway

1959, The Galway Races begins as a summer festival, lasting three days in duration. In 1959, the three day sporting event becomes the highlight of the business year for most local people and businesses across Galway city. Crowds flocked from all over the world for the race meetings and the races as we know it today came into being. It was around that time that the people of the west realised that the pub underneath the Corrib Stand, now known as the Killanin Stand, which is located at the show grounds, was in fact the longest bar in the world. The pub retained the status for many years and was well known for its feat throughout County Galway.

1950 and 1951 proved to be golden years for the Mayo senior football team who grabbed All Ireland glory, beating Louth, when their own Sean Boyle had his kickout charged down by Mayo's Mick Flanagan, who broke through with a freak winning goal. It was tight match, with Louth one point ahead, when

Mick Flanagan became Mayo's hero and brought the county its second All Ireland title! The score line at the end of the match was 25 11 to 1 6 9. The following year, success came roaring back to Mayo, who were hungry yet again to keep Sam west side, against Meath. The win came

with three late points from Padraig Carney known as the flying doctor because he had returned from the United States to play the game, giv ing Mayo a 28 14 to 09 9 win over the Royal County. In 1956, the Sam McGuire cup passed the Shannon once again and found itself a home in County Gal

way. The Joyce Country boys snatched the crown and glory from Cork with fabulous football from legendary Sean Purcell and Frank Stockwell in attack. The two men hailed as the 'terrible twins' were the winning formula against the 'Rebel boys', which brought Galway a 213 victory against Cork's 307.

Helsinki Olympics Glories to Zatopek

17 Year old ‘Little Mo’ wins Wimbledon 1952, Maureen Connolly, "Little Mo" to all her American fans, has won the Wimbledon singles title at her first attempt at the age of just 17  the youngest AllEngland champion since the 15yearold prodigy Lottie Dod last century. The solid, unruffled strength and consistency of her ground strokes, her backhand in particular, have been well known to Americans for the past year. But Louise Brough, three times champion since the War and playing her fifth Wimbledon final, might have been expected to make her experience tell. She led 5 4 in the first set, and three deuces were called before the young Cali fornian took the tenth game. There after she gradually wore down the older player, and in the end won comfortably 75, 63.

1952, Helsinki's Olympic Games, held in the Finns' magnificent new stadium and opened with their greatest Olympian. Paavo Nurmi, lighting the flame, will long be remembered by the British as the one in which they very nearly failed to win a single gold medal. It was not until a quarter of an hour before the closing ceremony, in the centre of the great stadium, that Colonel Harry Llewellyn and Foxhunter jumped a clear round to give Britain's showjumping team the Prix des Nations title. One man, though, dominated the Games: Emil Zatopek. The 29 year-old Czech not only regained his 1948 title by winning the 10,000 metres, but also sprinted round four men on the final bend to win the 5,000 metres and then, three days later, attempted the first marathon of his life, and won it by a minute and a half. Asked what it was like, he said it was boring. It was an unprecedented treble, with all three performances setting new Olympic records. And if that wasn't enough, his wife Dana set an Oylmpic record for the javelin by 15 feet.

Word Puzzle!

Did you know?

Here is a game that you can play to test your skill. This game will present you with a matrix filled with letters. The objective is to form words by concatenating adjacent letters. Letters that are to the left, right, on top, bottom, or on a diagonal to each other are all acceptable.

13% of people are left-handed In medieval times, left-handed people could not become knights because it was thought that they were descendants of the devil, it is said. Spiral staircases in castles ran clockwise to allow knights – all right-handed – to battle intruders effectively. The word for left in French means gauche and in Latin it means sinister. The Latin word for right is dexter, from which came “dexterous”. Ambidextrous means literally “both right.” 13% of people are left-handed, up from 11% a few decades ago. The story that right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people is a myth. Animals also are either right-handed or left-handed. Polar bears are left-handed – and so is Kermit the Frog.

Left or right-hand travel Before the advent of the motorcar everybody traveled on the left side of the road because most persons are right-handed, the side on which they would draw their sword. If you passed a stranger that walked in the same direction, you pass on the left to ensure that your sword arm was between you. This is actually strange because the natural tendency for people is to keep to the right. Revolutionary France overturned the practice of traveling on the left as part of its social rethink even though traveling on either side was practiced there. Napoleon carried the change of traveling only on the right over through Europe. The USA, anxious to cast off remaining links with its British colonial past, also opted for traveling on the right, passing the first of such laws in 1792 in Pennsylvania. Most of the world now drives motorcars on the right – thus, left-hand-drive vehicles. 65 countries still travel on the left – there are 195 countries in the world (the U.S. recognizes 194 independent countries) or 203 sovereign states. In some countries, such as France, trains travel on the left where there are two tracks. All aircraft and boats keep to the right.

ANSWERS

Going bananas Bananas are the world’s most popular fruit after tomatoes. In western countries, they could account for 3% of a grocer’s total sales. Bananas consistently are the number one compliant of grocery shoppers. Most people complain when bananas are overripe or even freckled. The fact is that spotted bananas are sweeter, with a sugar content of more than 20%, compared with 3% in a green banana. As if fighting with their consumers over bananas is not enough big retailers often turn on each other. In 2002, Asda-Walmart fired the first, uhm, banana in a price war with big British supermarket chain Tesco and others. The gorilla war (which includes guerrilla war tactics) would spill over onto other battle shelves and – even after a trade truce in 2009 – the price war is ongoing. Counting the inches The word “ton” is derived from the French “tonnerre,” or “thunder,” from the sound wine barrels made when rolled. But there are various standards of a ton.You get a long ton, a short ton and metric ton. A US ton, the short ton, is equivalent to 2000 pounds (907.185 kilograms). A British ton, the long ton or gross ton, is 2240 pounds (1016.047 kilograms) because there are 112 pounds in their hundredweight. The United States, Great Britain and Canada each also had their own definition of the inch. It was only in 1958 that the inch was standardized to 25.4 millimetres exactly. A problem still exists for the foot, where the International Foot is based on the 25.4 mm inch, but the Survey Foot – aka the U.S. Survey Foot – is based on the 25.40005 mm inch. One International Foot equals 0.999998 U.S. Survey Feet. Over 100 miles (160 km) they differ by 1.05 ft (32 cm). In meters, the International Foot is 0.3048 meters and the Survey Foot is 0.30480060960125017024227597156924 meters

An acre of hemp produces more paper than an acre of trees For thousands of years, until 1883, hemp was the world’s largest agricultural crop, from which the majority of fiber, fabric, soap, lighting oil, paper, incense, and medicines were produced. TooDog Theatre presents a comedy double-bill of fresh new one-act plays, “Bardot Bites” and “Lucy Bastible”, at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday 24th March at 8.00pm. In the light-hearted comedy “Bardot Bites”, we meet 45 year-old Bid who has led a sheltered life looking after her ailing mother. When the mother dies, Bid is catapulted into the world of work, with a job on the cheese counter in the local deli where she learns the ways of cheese and men. “Lucy Bastible” finds a privileged woman whose world is rocked to its foundations when husband Jeremy strays. In this darkly comic one act play, Lucy gives us a glimpse into her crumbling world and psyche as she seeks vengeance. Both plays are written and performed by Denise Quinn, directed by Mary Curtin. Come and enjoy an evening of fresh theatrical pleasure. TooDog Theatre presents “Bardot Bites” and “Lucy Bastible”, at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Thursday 24th March at 8.00pm. Booking advised. dra Hunt Royal Theatre John & Edward have rarely been out of the limelight since they burst onto the scene this time last year on ITV’s X Factor. With recent TV appearances on T4 On The Beach and Big Brother grabbing more headlines for the boys, as well as their weekly show on TV3 and their recent appearance on The Late Late Show fans just cant get enough of Jedward. Louis Walsh said: “Jedward really captured the public’s imagination whilst on The X Factor and love them or hate them you can’t deny that they were the talking point of the series. As Under Pressure was the track that really catapulted the boys to fame it seemed only fitting to release the song as their first single.” Tickets are available on www.ticketmaster.ie as well as from the Royal The on 0818 don’t hold back on stage, it’s a show full atre Box Office 300 000.Tickets  27.50 incl. booking fee, of energy, dance song and music, if you are priced from have never seen them book tickets now other service charges may apply. gorgeous gardens for you to enjoy How To Choose a Garden Shed If the last time that you opened your garage door was weeks ago, and things fell on you when you did, it's a sure sign that you need a garden shed! A shed can add extra storage space for your outdoor items, as well as serving many other uses. 1.Why do you want a garden shed? Garden sheds can store everything from outdoor equipment to gardening supplies to power tools. They can also serve as a playhouse for your kids, a potting area, or an area in which to practice your hobbies. If you just want a storage space, a simple, rectangular shed, with or without windows, will fulfill your needs. On the other hand, if the space is to be a playhouse, you'll likely want it to be a bit more decorative, perhaps even mirroring the style of your main house. A potting shed or hobby area will need to have some windows, to make the space pleasant to work in. 2. How much space do you need? If you plan to store your outdoor equipment, such as lawnmowers and snowblowers, in your shed, measure the equipment so

that you'll be sure to buy a shed which is large enough. You may want to make it a little bigger than you think you'll need. You don't want to trade your lawnmower in for a slightly bigger model and find out you'll need a new shed, too! If your shed is to be a multi-purpose area - perhaps with an area for your tools, but also a play area for your kids - be sure the two areas are completely separated. It will prevent the items in the storage area from spilling over into the rest of the shed, and it will keep your kids away from things which could be dangerous. Another consideration is the height of the roof. If you will be using the shed to work in, you'll want a higher ceiling than if you are just using it for storage. Some larger storage sheds can even be fitted with lofts, which can be very useful to get more storage area within the same footprint. 3. What material do you prefer? Garden sheds come in three basic materials - wood, vinyl and metal. Wood sheds are generally more attractive, and look more like a house than vinyl or metal, but they are usually more expensive. Metal sheds, such as steel or galvanized aluminum, are very durable and come in a rainbow of colors. They are also less expensive. However, they are generally not as attractive as wood sheds. Vinyl sheds are the most economical solution, and are virtually maintenance-free. The main disadvantage is that they won't last as long as a metal or wood shed. 4. What kind of floor do you want? Some storage sheds have an integrated floor, which means it's part of the shed itself. For a more durable option, you may want to purchase a shed without a floor so that you can pour a concrete slab as a base. 5. Will your shed need to be portable? If you will be moving your shed to different parts of your yard occasionally, you'll need one which is fairly lightweight. You will also want one with an integrated floor, since a concrete slab is not movable, of course! 6.What kind of "extras" will you require? Depending upon your needs, you may want a ramp for your shed, to easily move equipment in and out, a workbench, windows, skylights or roof panels, and additional shelving. Another factor to consider is ventilation. If you plan to work in your shed, it may get awfully hot in the summer if it's not ventilated.

inspiring kitchens the heart of the home How to Choose Kitchen Cabinets Picking out cabinets for your new or remodeled kitchen is not an open and shut matter. The choices for door style, wood, finish and options are endless. Cabinets can add up to 70 percent of a kitchen's cost, so research your options for the best return on your investment. 1. Analyze your kitchen layout and your family's lifestyle and cooking

habits. Plot what you need to store and display, as well as accessories that will simplify and organize your kitchen activities. 2. Get professional guidance--from a kitchen designer at a store to narrow your style and component choices and make the most of your space. 3. Choose stock cabinets when controlling costs is your priority. Massproduced in standard sizes, stock cabinets leave room in your budget for upgrades elsewhere. You'll find fewer finish options but many popular styles, woods and accessories. 4. Spring for custom units if you need to fit exact dimensions.Top-quality materials and craftsmanship increase both the cost and turnaround. Semicustom cabinets are also made to order, but their set widths may require inserts The warmth and richness of the Dark Walnut PVC fascias combined with recessed letterbox handles offer a clean sharp look. for a perfect fit. 5. Select the wood you want and desired finish. Maple, oak and cherry are favorite hardwoods. Signs of quality cabinets are grain that matches from piece to piece and furniture-quality finishes. 6. Investigate manufactured finishes such as laminate or thermofoil. Both are easy to clean and less expensive than wood, but also less durable. Ask about typical repairs and what the warranty covers. Examine a showroom sample that has been in use for a while to see how it wears. 7. Insist on construction that can support heavy cookware and withstand countless openings, bumps and spills. Drawers with dovetailed joints are stronger than stapled ones. Doors with fitted mortised corners are sturdier than noninterlocking butt joints. Also look for 3/4inch-thick (2 cm) face frames. 8. Peek inside cabinets. Most stock and semicustom units use solid wood only for the exposed frame, doors and drawers. Even high-end cabinets may contain particleboard or veneer-covered plywood inside. Both are less likely to warp than solid wood, and can be stained or painted. 9. Look for drawers that extend completely and are equipped with self-closing glides rated to hold 75 lb. (35 kg).Well-made drawers boast 1/2- to 3/4-inch (1.2 to 2 cm) sides with dovetailed or doweled joints and a strong bottom that's glued into grooves. The strongest shelves are 3/4-inch (2 cm) plywood.
