ITH so such focus on Greece and the inevitability of more austerity – wage, pension reduction, etc. - to save the Greek economy, Irish businesses may be faced with a contrasting problem in the coming months, the prospect of an increase in the minimum wage. With the report of the low pay commission imminent a new survey by think tank Task reveals that 86% of those surveyed believe that the minimum wage of €8.65 should be increased. In addition, 75% say it should be the same as what’s considered to be the living wage of €11.50, a rate which the trade union SIPTU had called for previously. The current minimum rate has remained the same since 2011 despite the introduction of other austerity measures. It was also noted that Ireland has the third highest level of low pay in the OECD. According to Tasc analyst Cormac Staunton the support for an increase in now “overwhelming” and has jumped by 2% since the last survey. He felt it should assist the Government in acting decisively on the low pay commission’s report when it emerges. However, an increase to the minimum wage has been vehemently opposed by some businesses, who believe it could impact on their ability to create jobs. The Restaurant Association of Ireland voiced concerns in its submission to the commission that it could affect the sector’s growth, particularly after it is experiencing an upturn after many years of poor earnings. 015 Diageo Baileys Champion Dairy Cow Competition in association with Glanbia Ingredients Ireland Ltd is open for entries Press Release [3rd July 2015]: The 2015 Diageo Baileys Irish Champion Cow Competition is now open for entries from Co. Mayo dairy breeders. This prestigious livestock competition is sponsored by Diageo in conjunction with its cream supplier Glanbia Ingredients Ireland and carries a top prize of 2,500 Euros. It
was officially launched by Minister of State for the Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine, Tom Hayes T.D., at the Baileys Irish Cream factory recently. The finale is expected to attract top Holstein Friesian breeders across the country when it takes place at the Virginia Show in Co. Cavan on Wednesday, 19th August. At the launch, Minister Hayes congratulated the two companies on their longstanding relationship with the
Minimum wage in focus again Continued from front page It is also contended that many SMEs are still under pressure and struggling to find their feet. A study by Eurofound earlier this year revealed that over the previous two years the minimum wage levels have begun to increase and Ireland was among four countries not to register an increase, along with Belgium, Greece and Slovenia. By contrast, Latvia and Romania showed spikes of 12.5% and 14% respectively. Interestingly, also, if we judge it in real terms, combining the SMW and the consumer price index, Ireland’s statutory rate actually fell by 0.3%. While most people at work and on low wages would welcome an increase in the minimum wage some fears have been expressed that it could price many young people out of the labour market.
event and their commitment to working together. "I am aware that Diageo and Glanbia Ingredients Ireland are making great progress in the area of sustainability, helping to boost the credentials of the Baileys brand by reducing the carbon footprint and at the same time improving productivity. This is in line with our strategy to produce quality, safe, nutritious foods and products in an environmentally sustainable manner while at the same time delivering economic growth in rural areas." Diageo Ireland Head of Corporate & Trade Communications Hazel Chu said that Diageo were delighted to be able to recognise excellence in Irish dairy breeding, "At the heart of this long-standing competition is the success of our supply-chain partnership with Glanbia and the dairy farms that supply the cream for Baileys." In addition to the top prize, €1,000 will be awarded to the breeder of the Reserve Champion and €500 for Honourable Mention. There is also a Best Heifer in Milk prize
fund of €1,700. 1st place attracts a prize of €500, 2nd place will be awarded €300, and €200 will go to 3rd place; whilst €100 will be awarded to entrants from 4th to 10th place inclusively. Trophies will also be presented for Highest Protein Content, Best EBI and Best Exhibitor-Bred Cow and there is a Dry Cow fund of €500. The special awards for Best Protein and EBI emphasise important factors in milk production. The competition's Director Brendan Smyth said "he was looking forward to the finest display of Holstein Friesian cows in Ireland." Last year’s top prize went to second-time winner Sean Murphy from Waterfall Co. Cork with his Champion Dairy Cow Dalevalley OTI J Lulu. Entry forms for this competition are available by calling Brendan Smyth ++ 353 (0)87 2560952 / email bsmyth@glanbia.ie or visit the Virginia Show website www.virginiashow.ie; Follow the conversation on Twitter @BaileysCow #DiageoBaileysCow2015. Cranmore set to become Ireland’s First Age Friendly Estate
C
ranmore Estate in Sligo is once again leading the way in its commitment to improving the quality of life for all residents and in empowering them to make real changes in their community. The estate today announces its intention to become an Ireland’s first Age Friendly Estate, an initiative taking place under the broader Sligo Age Friendly County programme which was launched early this year. The ethos behind the Sligo Age Friendly County Initiative will ensure that all agencies work together and share resources to promote and maintain the best possible health and wellbeing of older people and the broader community. The programme is a true partnership approach between organisations and community and is chaired by Ciaran Hayes, Chief Executive. The programme has already seen a number of actions taking place including a county-wide consultation, a walkability audit of Sligo Town and the hosting of the Age Friendly Family Adventure Walk, hosted by Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership. The estate project is supported by Cranmore Regeneration and is being led out by Cranmore Community Cooperative with the Abbeyquarter Women’s Group and the
Springboard Project. By undertaking this commitment to make Cranmore an Age Friendly Estate, participating organisations and community members in the estate will work together to develop a strategy and action plan to make Cranmore a great place in which to grow up and grow old. A steering committee has already been established in the estate with an aim to officially launching their strategy in late July. Actions are already planned to take place across the summer months to bring together young and old in the community, including a Cranmore Art Exhibition, a gardening project and an Intergenerational Quiz. Today’s announcement has been greatly supported by local schools in the area who recognise the importance of maintaining respect and value across the generations and encouraging young and old to work better together for the good of the community. I have seen that already this project has brought out the best in young and old and the kindness and understanding shared between both groups was uplifting (Helen O’Hara, Cranmore Community Coop) Classes from St Johns National School and The Mercy Primary School have undertaken an art

Throughout July and August, Ballina Film Club will present a selection of Jordan’s films which showcase the originality, verve and beauty of his work. The season will kick off this Tuesday (14th July) with Angel (1982). Jordan’s first feature follows Danny (Stephen Rea) – a
saxophonist with a travelling band – who witnesses a number of gangland murders. As he gets further drawn in, his life begins to fall apart. On Wednesday (15th July), the programme continues with the unforgettable The Company of Wolves (1984), Jordan’s take on Angela Carter’s short story of the same name, which oozes fairy-tale gothic, and is an updated version of the classic Little Red Riding Hood story. them to the world. His skills have been recognised by world-class coaches and he has been taking part in skills shows. He has also been encouraged to devise and wear a special kit and hopes to attract the attention of a sponsor. When he was younger (he could not speak until the age of seven) though he could perform on the field he could not do so off the pitch. Over the years he has come to terms with his condition, is highly intelligent and has worked hard to perfect his world-class soccer skills. He has uploaded a number of videos on YouTube and is attracting considerable attention as a result of a recent article in a local magazine, Mayo Now. Top coaches have recognised his lightening speed, accuracy and world-class finish. The following is a brief resume of Stephen’s ball-playing skills: (1) He can get around a player in one-eighth of a second; (2) he can perfect three skills (combination of step-over, flick, stand-on-ball) in one second; (3) he can effect a lightening quick pass. In his skills shows, which he has been holding in recent times, he has been demonstrating 24 skills in 10 seconds. Since he exposed his skills on You Tube it has generated even more interest in his talents. In fact, according to Stephen he can
do an amazing 213 skills in 60 seconds in a combination of video presentations. He also points out that the renowned Ronaldo can perform 10 skills in 10 seconds. To maintain his body condition and his ability to perform at such a lightening pace Stephen trains intensively four days a week – a gruelling series of weights, push-ups and workouts. He uses yoga to strengthen his legs and runs six miles each day to keep his muscle tone. He even uses yoga in the steam room to allow his muscles bend and be more flexible At UK Trials Worldwide in September of last year he performed the skills in person in front of UEFA coach Harry Price, who watched in apparent disbelief as he had felt the video display was false. He actually stopped a game in which Stephen was playing and said “please do that again”. Afterwards, as Stephen explained, he acknowledged his super-fast ball movements and said: “wow, that was some fast skill’ . . . you certainly have the moves for soccer’.” Naturally, Stephen’s ultimate ambition is to perform at the highest level. His videos can be viewed on YOUTUBE: REGANO SKILL. He hopes to perform in skills shows in Galway in the coming weeks and can be contacted at stephenregan1@hotmail.com.
Top French travel writer cycles entire length of Wild Atlantic Way French travel writer reports on 2,500 kms cycle from Mizen to Malin ~ 2 July 2015 – Some 250,000 people in France will be reading all about the Wild Atlantic Way this autumn, in the popular outdoor magazine Wider. French travel writer Sylvain Bazin has taken on the mammoth task of cycling the entire Wild Atlantic Way, or some 2,500 kms along Ireland’s western seaboard. Tourism Ireland in France invited Sylvain to undertake the marathon cycle – to experience the Wild Atlantic Way and then inspire his readers and followers to come and discover it for themselves. He stopped off to visit Donegal Castle and stayed at Ard na Breatha Guesthouse and Restaurant in Donegal town. He cycled on to Ardara, where he stayed at Bayview Country House B&B; then to Ramelton, where he stayed at Lennon Lodge; and finally to the finishing point of his mammoth cycle, Malin Head, where he stayed at White Strand B&B. Sylvain has been documenting his three-week journey, with daily updates on his travel-blog, Twitter (almost 2,000 followers) and Instagram accounts. Following his visit, an extensive article on Ireland and the Wild Atlantic Way will also appear in the September edition of the popular Wider magazine, which has about 250,000 readers. Monica MacLaverty, Tourism Ireland’s manager of southern Europe, said: “Sylvain’s three-week cycle promises to be a really effective way of highlighting the Wild Atlantic Way. With more than 250,000 readers, the article in the September edition of Wider magazine is a great opportunity to promote the
route to a wide audience of outdoor and adventure enthusiasts around France. Sylvain has also been posting lots of great photos and details of this journey online – inspiring his readers to come and discover this part of Ireland for themselves. “France is one of the top four markets for tourism to Ireland and 2015 has got off to a positive start, with the most recent CSO figures showing growth of +12% for March to May, an additional 14,800 French visitors compared with the same three-month period last year. Tourism Ireland is determined to ensure that tourism growth continues and we have an extensive programme of promotions under way in France in 2015.” Sylvain will visit almost every corner of the West of Ireland, before arriving at the finishing point of his journey, at Malin Head, Co Donegal. He is being joined by a French friend for the journey, who is travelling by recumbent bike.

staging one of the official events for the Mayo Manchester Tradfest which will feature Joe Keegan from the BBC TV series The Voice and members of the Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band. It promises to be a very special evening for us.” Declan Heneghan, General Manager of Hotel Westport added “Following on from the success of the past five years, this new show, 'Atlantic Rhythm – The Show' will be a great attraction for people residing in the vicinity of Westport this Summer. It will appeal to young and old, locals and tourists who seek out ‘the traditional elements’ of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way whilst on holiday". The Full House Ceilí Band who hail from Bonniconlon, comprise of siblings Stephen, Sandra and Aisling Dempsey. They were invited to perform in Arás an Uachtaráin by both former Presidents, Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese and have performed on National and International Radio and TV after their tour of North America. Double-Take duo Tara Cawley and Barry Molloy are an acoustic band based in Ballina and are currently cast in the hit musical "Beyond the Barricade" which was a sell out show around Mayo and soon be in Manchester. Their music genre ranges from Irish, Ballad, Current and Rock. T has been sad that veterans of the Great War have been ignored until recent years, so full credit is due to those who have made such trojan efforts to restore
their memory to its rightful place. The Ballina Comrades of the Great War held a special gathering in the Green Park, Ballina, Ballina, in June for a
World War 1 monument, engraved with 182 names of those who died from this area. The unveiling was carried out by An Taoiseach, Mr. Enda Kenny. P. J. Clarke, chairman of Ballina Comrades of the Great War, who, with his committee, has to be commended for his work in restoring and honouring the memory of those “forgotten” people, spoke about the lives and deaths of the many Mayo men who fought for Ireland. He said some parents in Ballina had lost two or three sons. “If you look west from the garden the graveyards are full of dead heroes from the area . . . and there are some very sad
stories”, he said. An Taoiseach reminded those present that the monument was of major historical significance and not a glorification of war, but a fitting tribute to those who had fought for peace and freedom. Michelle Mulhern, TD., who also attended, had a relative who died in the Great War. The unveiling ceremony was also attended by CEO of Mayo County Council, Peter Hynes, Cathaoirleach Damian Ryan and Dara Calleary, T.D., in addition to many relatives and friends of those who had died. A minute’s silence was observed before wreaths were laid.

Years of Dip in the Nip - From Shock to Serenity
Dip in the Nip 2012 - James Connolly / PicSell8 Ltd.
E
xactly 7 years ago last Sunday, the very first skinny dip for charity in Ireland - and the world - took place at the lovely Lissadell Beach in Sligo. It was the inaugural Dip in the Nip (sochristened by the late, great Gerry Ryan) and at the time was considered crazy, shocking and impossible. Máire Garvey and her co-conspirator Grainne Gilmartin of the Sligo Wellness Centre happily admitted that they didn’t really have a clue what they were at when they decided to turn the audacious idea into a reality. It was a very grey, drizzly
morning (what IS it about Midsummers' Day?!) but that didn't stop 180 women (the first one was a women-only event) travelling from all over Ireland to do something so wonderfully challenging – Máire has since described it as an extreme sport, but with no training required. To cap it all, tide times had not been factored into the planning, so everybody had to run for about a mile before hitting water. All Dips are special, and all first Dips especially so. But that very first one, that first run into a chilly, drizzly North Atlantic had about it a unique
Dip in the Nip 2011 - James Connolly / PicSell8 Ltd.
sense of adventure, of awe, of joy. So many of those Dippers had experienced cancer themselves, some of them more than once. Many of them had had single or double mastectomies, some without re-constructive surgery. Others were there to honour somebody close to them. People continue to do the Dip because they want to be part of the fight against cancer, part of the solution, and while the priority for the Dip in the Nip – as ever - is raising money for the local cancer charity that each Dip partners with, it has become increasingly clear that for the
people who take part, what the Dip gives them is so much more than being part of that fight: it gives them something unique, deeply personal and long lasting. One Dipper spoke of how being naked in the sea healed her acrimonious relationship with her deceased, alcoholic father, and allowed her to say goodbye to him, something she had been unable to do previously. A male Dipper described it as a special way to raise money that honours body and spirit, that is beautiful and respectful, filled with love and hope and remembrance. Another Dipper, who had had a double mastectomy, echoed the sentiments of many when she said after her first Dip that running naked into the sea had given her back her body, her selfconfidence and her sexuality. This is something common to most, if not all Dippers, whether or not they personally have had cancer. Running naked into the sea seems to re-connect them with their bodies. It’s as though they fall in love with them, and rediscover just how beautiful those bodies are, regardless of size, shape or lumpy bits! It is such a simple act, that of immersing oneself in the waves, and yet it has powerful consequences for those who do it. It also takes people outside of their comfort zones, even Veteran Dippers who have Dipped many times. For some, it is an extreme sport that – mercifully – requires no training. And it offers so many rewards, not just for the benefiting charity, but for the Dippers themselves. The 2015 Sligo Dip in the Nip, again in support of S.H.O.U.T., will take place on Sunday 5th July at 8am on a beach in Sligo. Máire feels proud of the fact that the very first one ever took place not just in Ireland, but in Sligo. And Sligo has adopted it as its' own, especially the Beltra Country Market who have taken ownership of it in the best possible way. And will do so again on the 5th when they provide their homemade goodies and the welcome hot tea, coffee and soup after the Dip. There will also be an opportunity for Dippers to purchase some lovely crafts from the Country Market as well, as souvenirs of the day. Full information and how to register can be had at www.dipinthenip.eu, on Facebook or by calling 086-401 6047.

Fare dodger leaps off moving train to avoid €10 fine, ends up in hospital (and gets arrested Y ou’re on a train and you haven’t bothered to buy a ticket, presumably because you think it’s unlikely you’ll be discovered. But then you notice the familiar
figure of the ticket inspector walking from seat to seat, asking passengers to produce their tickets or risk a fine. A fine of €10. What do you do? Option one is to try and talk
your way out of it. You explain to the ticket inspector that you were running late and desperately needed to catch that specific train, that you’ve never fare-dodged before and
won’t again, and then hope they will be sympathetic enough to let you off with a warning. Option two is to accept your fate. You tried to play the game and you got caught. You lost. Apologise and pay the fine. Option three is to get off the train. You rise slowly to your feet, your eyes narrowed, determination written across your face. You turn into the aisle and make your way to the emergency brake, which you pull. As the train slows you go to the side-door of the train and open it. The wind whips through your hair. You turn to look at the ticket inspector and shoot them a final look that says ‘Better luck next time.’ Then you leap. Now, we don’t presume to know your mind, but we would guess that you would likely choose option one or two, because you value your life. A 27-year-old fare dodger in Germany went for option three. The consequences of this selection was that he badly hurt his leg in the landing, was unable to run away, ended up in hospital and was then arrested.
Schoolboy, 14, found hanged after row with mum over Wi-Fi A schoolboy was found hanged following an argument with his mother over using the home’s Wi-Fi, an inquest has heard. William Musgrove, described as a ‘model student, sporty and generally happy’, was discovered hanged half a mile away from his home in Ashover in the Peak District on 16 February. And an inquest revealed that the 14-year-old had stormed out of the house following a row with his mother over use of the home’s Wi-Fi the night before his body was found. It was the last time she saw him. Coroner Dr. Robert Hunter also said that William, a talented rugby player in the Leicester Tigers Elite Player Development group, had been listening to increasingly ‘dark’ hip-hop music in the months before his death. The lyrics of some of the songs had been about death and suicide, Dr. Hunter said. ‘He had no previous history of depression or suicidal thoughts,’ he said. ‘He had a keen interest in American rap music, in particular the darker side of American rap music, with lyrics relating to suicide and death. ‘He would have been an impressionable teenager and this type of music would have had an effect on his way of looking at things.’ Detectives investigating the case found that William and his mother had had a trivial argument on 15 February. William swore at his mother and pushed her aside after he was told to stop using the home’s Wi-Fi. For emotional support contact charity Samaritans anonymously on 08457 909 090.

Hot tub on the loose… in the English Channel tub installed that came loose during the sinking. ‘The hot tub was too large to recover on to the lifeboat. It is currently adrift in the English Channel. ‘Its last known position was passed to Dover Coastguard.’ If you’re enough of a hot tub aficionado, this could be your only chance to sip prosecco while riding the Channel’s waves in a jacuzzi.
T
his is just a little bit strange…
A hot tub is drifting further and further into the English Channel after he houseboat it was on accidentally sank. The 22-metre houseboat started taking on water while being towed by a tug seven
miles from Newhaven, East Sussex. Newhaven’s relief lifeboat and her volunteer crew were launched but were unable to save the houseboat which sank, leaving debris – including the hot tub. A RNLI spokesman said: ‘The houseboat that sunk had a hot
Anyone who’s ever got drunk knows how hungry you can get. But while most people opt for a kebab or chips, one man went for the concrete. The man in question explained that he had been drinking heavily and was heading back to his home in Nanjing in Jiangsu Province, China, when he spotted a pail with some thick liquid inside. Of course, he didn’t realise at the time it was concrete in the pail. He thought it was sesame paste (which at best is a dip, but then he was drunk.) In any case, his drunken snack sent him to the hospital, where he had his stomach pumped, Jiangsu TV reports.

The Linenhall Arts Centre in July and his respect for his father. Equally hilarious and moving, “Thy Will be Done” has become an international favourite and, given the usual Beezneez production standards, patrons are guaranteed an entertaining and engaging evening of theatre in true Beezneez style. Beezneez presents “Thy Will Be Done” at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Tuesday 14th July at 8.00pm. Booking advised. SHARON MURPHY AT THE LINENHALL You might have heard her mesmerising performance on BBC’s The Voice UK 2015, but now singer/songwriter Sharon Murphy delivers her distinctive mix of soul, reggae, folk and blues at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday 2nd July at 8.00pm. Sharon Murphy is a singer, songwriter and performer who spent many years in Clifden, Co Galway. She began to sing at an early age, and taught herself to play guitar. Sharon writes songs straight from the heart, personal songs that touch a universal chord in people. Her singing voice is a truly unique sound. Performing solo, Sharon projects a style and a sound that goes from soul to reggae to folk to blues, all the time sounding original and real. Her guitar playing is a unique blend of driving rhythmic percussive beats one moment, then delicate gentle finger picking the next. In concert, she is a bundle of contradictions, serious
one minute, laughing and joking the next, telling stories that turn into songs, putting everyday heartbreak under the microscope so that we can all see and recognize ourselves in the mirror she holds before us. A special night by a unique performer on the cards. THEATRE: BEEZNEEZ AT THE LINENHALL The ever-popular Beezneez theatre company returns to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar with a cracking production of Michael Carey’s hit play “Thy Will Be Done” on Tuesday 14th July at 8.00pm. “Thy Will Be Done” is the story of two brothers, Jack and Peteen who live side by side but haven’t spoken in 40 years with home help, Bridie, acting as a gobetween. Peteen’s has been a failed marriage with a wife emigrating to America just before their son was born, never to return. When she dies in America, her son returns to Ireland and is torn between his love for his uncle
EXHIBITIONS AT THE LINENHALL: THOMAS BREZING The coming week is the last chance to see “Why Stop Dreaming When You Wake Up?”, an exhibition of painting and installation by artist Thomas Brezing, at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar. The show reflects the artistic opportunity to prolong childhood through play and possibility. As Thomas explains, “Most thoughts going into my current art practice are informed by what I experienced as a child, in my dreams, visions, in silence and in my actual life. Outside of childhood, so called ‘day dreaming’ wouldn’t be encouraged, but for an artist it is essential. These works are loosely based on the notion of landscape and location, woods, water, in some cases the human presence and how we interact with our environment and respond to it. The paintings are not preplanned, but rather the actual act and pleasure of painting takes over and chance and looseness play as much a role as concrete thinking while paint is pushed around, scraped off, made flow,
thrown, fixed, removed, restored… building up the layers with a lightness of touch, striving towards a totality that is impossible to achieve.” Thomas Brezing was born in Germany in 1969 and moved to Ireland in the 1990s. He has exhibited widely in Ireland and also in Germany, Wales, England, Finland and Belgium. According to artist Patrick Graham, “It is Thomas Brezing’s insatiable curiosity intellectually, spiritually and philosophically - and the remarkable generosity of will that he invests in his art and life that makes him such a considerable artist.” The exhibition runs until Saturday 4th July. The Linenhall Gallery is open Monday-Friday from 10.00am 5.00pm; Saturday from 11.00am5.30pm. Admission to exhibitions is free. Further details from the Linenhall. SUMMER BUZZ AT THE LINENHALL The Linenhall in Castlebar will be abuzz with young people over the month of July as the arts centre’s month of Summer Workshops gears up to deliver a programme designed to entertain and engage with a wide range of quality arts activities. As ever this year’s programme has proved extremely popular, and at this stage all the workshops are fully booked up and ready to go. So while the Linenhall’s theatrical programme takes a bit of a breather, rest assured that no-one will be sitting on any laurels this summer. For full details on the Linenhall’s programme, see www.thelinenhall.com, and be assured that the last few tweaks to an exciting Autumn programme of music, theatre and much more are being made as we speak. Neil Jordan retrospective at Ballina Film Club Ballina Film Club presents... returns with a look at the career of one of modern Irish cinema’s most distinctive talents. Since the early 1980s, Neil Jordan has emerged as one of Irish cinema’s most original artists. His debut feature, Angel in 1982, announced a serious talent and since then he has gone to create a considerable body of work ranging from mainstream hits to more personal, low-budget arthouse works. Through much of his work he has forged an aesthetic which could be described as Irish Gothic. He won an Academy Award for his script of The Crying Game and has won many other prestigious awards at festivals around the world. Throughout July and August, Ballina Film Club will present a se-
lection of Jordan’s films which showcase the originality, verve and beauty of his work. The season will kick off on Tuesday 14th July with Angel, and will be followed by screenings of The Company of Wolves, Mona Lisa, The Crying Game, The Butcher Boy, Breakfast on Pluto and Ondine. The season will conclude on Wednesday 5th August with a Viewers’ Choice between two Jordan vampire movies: Interview with a Vampire (Jordan’s adaptation of Anne Rice’s book exploring the relationships between a group of bloodthirsty vampires, starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas and Christian Slater) or Byzantium (Jordan’s mature take on a modern Gothic vampire story). People can make their choice on the Ballina Film Club Facebook page.
The film with the most votes will be the one which will close the season. All screenings will start at 8pm and tickets are €5.

his probably won’t go down in the record books as one of the worst ever days in Mayo’s footballing history but it won’t, perhaps, be too far off it either. On a perfect evening for championship football, we produced a staggeringly insipid performance and once we let Sligo back into a match we should have wrapped up before the end of the first half, we simply let them walk all over us. They beat us in the end by four points and they did so with ease. Good luck to them – they richly deserved this win and I hope they now go on to bigger and better things this summer. For us, by contrast, it’s difficult to see us getting past the first round of the qualifiers. I remember coming out of Croke Park in the rain after the league final thinking that the display I’d just seen was the true worth of where we stood in footballing terms right now. In the weeks since then, however, I’d kinda forgotten that searing epiphany but, hunched over the laptop as I am barreling along the N4 back to Dublin (The Brother’s at the wheel for this return leg), any delusions that I might have had about our place in the greater scheme of things have been well and truly shattered by that awful, awful display we put on at Markievicz Park this evening. 1-8 in a championship match. Against Sligo. That shows how far
down the pecking order we now reside and, while the back door still affords us – as it does for everyone else who ends up being forced to take this route – a shot at redemption, I think we all know now where that route is going to lead us. It’s all over for us in 2010, bar one or two more shite performances, and that’s not the only thing that needs to end either. Johnno still has the chance to do something for us in the qualifiers but this really is last chance saloon for both him and a number of his players. The overwhelming evidence now is that the only direction he’s leading us in is backwards and unless he can radically transform our fortunes in the qualifiers, he simply has to do the decent thing and step aside to allow someone else to have a shot at the job. Whoever that person is will then be able to decide for himself which of the current cohort of players he keeps and which he wants to jettison. On today’s performance, a number fall into the latter category. Ten minutes into today’s match, you would have got generous odds on such a calamitous outcome for Mayo, as we led by 1-1 to 0-0 and looked set to blow Sligo out of the water before half-time. Alan Freeman, whose performance was one of the few positives for us in the shadow of Ben Bulbin today, fielded cleanly and smashed over the day’s opening score from way out on the left inside the first minute. The Aghamore man caught the next ball that was pumped in too and this time he was

hauled down inside the square. He got up and thumped home the resultant penalty to send us four clear. Sligo needed to do something to counter our Route One approach and what they did was shift Eamonn O’Hara back as sweeper. They also needed to get some scores and their opener came following a soft free award, with Colm McGee raising the first white flag of the day for the Magpies. Conor got one from play to restore our four-point lead but Enda Varley then blazed wide a glorious chance to put us further ahead. A McGee point from play and a Breheny free reduced the gap to two and, with our long ball tactics now being neutralised by O’Hara’s positioning in the backs, we found ourselves treading water. Davey was allowed to saunter through to land another point for them and when Conor countered with his second from play for us, it was our first score for close on 20 minutes. Breheny and Conor then traded frees (here’s Mort’s one) to leave it 1-4 to 0-5 in our favour at the break. You could see by then that we were in bother. Our failure to sink the knife in when given the chance meant that confidence was now beginning to build in the home ranks and it was obvious that we were being sucked into a battle we might not win. Even at this stage, the portents didn’t look too good. A few changes wouldn’t have gone amiss at that stage and the pedestrian Tom Parsons – who spent the first half

Northwest Express July, 2015 arsing aimlessly around the middle as the game completely passed him by – would surely have been at the top of most Mayo supporters’ lists. Incredibly, though, Tom was left to wander cluelessly around the pitch until Barry Moran replaced him with less than ten minutes to go. We had a few chances early in the second half to extend our lead but failed to do so. Kevin McLoughlin put a half-hearted effort wide, Enda Varley went for a goal when he should have taken the point and instead saw his shot blocked down, Andy Moran dropped an attempt at a point into the keeper’s arms and then Conor sent a free – taken, unusually, from the ground a bit more than 30 yards out – risibly well wide. Sligo made us pay heavily for this profligacy when, five minutes into the half, they started to motor. Breheny, from another soft free award (ref Jimmy White was benevolent enough to the home side all evening, I thought), reduced the gap to one and when Peadar Gardiner was pulled up for a foul handpass soon after, Breheny lamped over the free to square things up. An Alan Freeman point edged us back in front but we were now clearly in the kind of dogfight we never wanted to find ourselves in and for which we looked anything but prepared. BJP for Seamus O’Shea wouldn’t have been everyone’s chosen switch at that stage but that, bewilderingly, was Johnno’s first tactical move of the second half. Why Seamus wasn’t moved to midfield with Parsons being taken off is anyone’s guess and how Johnno thought pitching BJ in at 11 was going to be a master-stroke is beyond me. But that’s what we got. And it was then that Sligo really began to cut loose. Kelly got his first of the day and then Taylor’s thumper from way out produced an earthy home town roar as Sligo edged in front
23 for the first time. This was followed by a McGee free and the Magpies were two to the good with twenty minutes to play. There was still no need to panic but we simply had to get possession of the ball, hold onto it and do some damage with it. As those dispiriting twenty minutes played out, though, we showed in no uncertain terms that we were unable to do any of these three things. Alan Freeman did manage to cut the deficit to one but two minutes later Gilmartin banged over another long-range point for them. Aidan O’Shea had replaced the ineffective Varley at this stage but he never managed to get into the game at all. Sligo could now sense it was going to be their day and when ex-Mayo player Alan Costello waltzed through to bang over their twelfth point of the day to send them three clear, you could see that our lads had accepted this outcome too. Andy Moran became only our third player to get on the scoresheet when he pointed from play with eight minutes to go and our final score of the day came from another Alan Freeman free but Sligo’s confident, exuberant closing scores contrasted with our frantic, fruitless efforts to get the goal that might give us another chance. It never came and, in truth, it never deserved to come and Sligo were fully deserving of their four-point winning margin at the end. They celebrated their win wildly and they were right to do so. Their hungry, committed team had done them proud. Few Mayo players emerged from this evening’s debacle with their reputations intact. Andy Moran was one – he worked his ass off, won loads of ball and repeatedly tried to drive us forward. As the second half progressed, he was the only man in the forwards who seemed capable of doing anything positive for us. Debutant Alan Freeman also had a good day, scoring 1-4 and showing more than

once his ability to cause havoc in the air. He faded after his bright opening but it was still an impressive first championship outing for the Aghamore man. At the back, Kevin McLoughlin did okay, Ger Cafferkey, Donal Vaughan and Keith Higgins showed occasional flashes of what they can do and Peadar Gardiner (who started in place of the ill Chris Barrett) wasn’t the worst either. Tom Cunniffe was, though, a major disappointment at centre-back. He never looked in control of his area, he spilled the ball repeatedly and he rarely seemed sure of what he was meant to be doing. Tom Parsons was as poor as he was in the league final and how he managed to stay on for as long as he did is a complete mystery. It’s truly sad to see such a talented player fail to play to his potential in this way and unless his attitude changes in a serious way, it’s hard to see how he can hope to start for the county again after today’s wretched performance. Ronan was a disappointment too and I gather that the TV replays of a firsthalf incident could mean that he may now be in hot water on the disciplinary front. If that’s the case, we could be looking at an entirely new midfield pairing for the first round of the qualifiers. Apart from Andy and Alan, the forwards weren’t hectic either. Trevor had yet another miserable afternoon and, like Tom Parsons, you’d have to wonder how many bad performances it takes for a player to be dropped. Conor started brightly enough but he disimproved sharply as the day went on, his afternoon’s contribution summed up by that horrendous wide he shot from less than 10 yards out close to the end. It sure feels like the end right now and there’s some serious wound-licking to be done over the next few days. I’m not sure how many weeks it is until the first round of the qualifiers and at the moment I really couldn’t give a flying fuck. But the qualifiers are there and they do offer a chance for Johnno and his squad of players to prove that they’re not as bad as Sligo made them look this evening. After this latest abject failure to perform, I think it’s highly unlikely that we’ll see any meaningful response from Johnno and his team in the qualifiers but it’s now up to them to prove everyone who shares this view wrong. MAYO: David Clarke; Peadar Gardiner, Ger Cafferkey, Keith Higgins; Donal Vaughan, Tom Cunniffe, Kevin McLoughlin; Tom Parsons, Ronan McGarrity; Andy Moran (0-1), Seamus O’Shea, Trevor Mortimer; Conor Mortimer (0-3, one free), Alan Freeman (14, penalty goal and two frees), Enda Varley. How the West was won: 6 memorable Connacht SFC finals
F
OOTBALL IN CONNACHT is generally thought about in terms of the Galway-Mayo rivalry. That’s undervaluing the championship. The battles for the JJ Nestor Cup over the years have been much more than just about two counties. Last year neither of them even made the final and the point most people miss is – in Connacht, the rivalries are massive. And each county has had some memorable encounters against each other – here are some of the best from the last half century. 1. Mayo v Galway Castlebar, 1966 That particular year might have been a good one for English football; World Cup, Eric Cantona was born and Pickles. But it was also possibly the greatest Connacht championship ever; a semi final replay between Mayo v Sligo and a memorable Galway performance versus Roscommonin the other. To cap it all off though, one of the most contentious finals of any province ever, and it’s still talked about. The winners went on to win the All-Ireland – and that was Galway. Man of Achill Michael J Ruddy scored what has been described as one of the greatest goals ever
from a Mayo man, however Galway clinched the game with a disputed injury time point from John Keenan, winning 0-12 to 1-8. Galway went on to beat Cork in the semis and Meath in the final with this well taken goal from Mattie McDonagh. 2. Galway v Roscommon Tuam and Dr Hyde Park, 1998 Hot summer, hot final. Galway were under the tutelage of Mayo man and current TD, John O’Mahony. Roscommon, under Gay Sheerin, were coming in on the back of a fine semi-final display, where they toppled Sligo by a point in a replay. The final was played in Tuam and ended up 11 points a-piece. But a lot of Rossies thought they had blown their chance against a much-fancied Galway side. It didn’t turn out quite that way. The replay in Dr Hyde Park was a cracker, with Galway eventually winning by a goal, 1-17 to 017. However Roscommon again had their chances in what was the game of the season. Perhaps to the annoyance of many of the Roscommon folk, Galway, after that battle, went on to win the All-Ireland final defeating Kildare.
3. Leitrim v Mayo Dr Hyde Park, 1994 Concede a goal in the first 20 secs, well it looks like history is about to repeat itself. Leitrim had not been in a Connacht decider since 1967 and hadn’t won one since their sole victory in 1927. When Mayo goaled straight from the throw-in, the omens looked, well pretty awful. Leitrim had the hardest path to the final, beating Roscommon and then Galway after a replay in the semi-final, so they had shown resilience and confidence up to that point and this all showed up again on that July Sunday, as they eventually ran out two-point winners, 0-12 to 204.
4. Sligo v Galway Dr Hyde Park, 2007 Another one for the sentimental. Sligo, oft seen as a soft touch in Connacht, had for a number of years been knocking on the door without any success. In the previous 10 years, they had lost two finals narrowly and many thought their time had passed. However the players stayed together looking for that first title since 1975, and even-

They only won two however – but if ever a loss was remembered it was a topsy- turvey ending to the 1989 provincial final replay. The last minute of normal time sort of sums up this thrilling game. Roscommon two points down, get a penalty and score a goal. Cue celebrations – Roscommon manager Marty McDermott frantically tries to get his players back in position.
ayo won the Connacht Senior Football Championship title with a narrow 0-12 to 0-10 victory over Sligo in a scrappy decider at Dr Hyde Park. The defending champions struggled for fluency against the wind in the opening half, but finished strongly to shake off the brave challenge of a Sligo side that had looked capable for long spells of causing a shock. The introduction of a raft of subs, particularly midfielder Aidan O’Shea, helped swing a tight, scrappy game in favour of James Horan’s side in the closing stages in front of a crowd of 23,257. Danny Geraghty kicked the opener, but former Mayo player Alan Costello had Sligo level with a massive free kick from all of 55 metres. Mayo had the ball in the net in the ninth minute through Andy Moran, but the goal was disallowed for Cillian O’Connor’s carelessly and illegally executed handpass. The Yeatsmen adopted a direct approach with the wind in their backs, and it paid off when Costello knocked over another free, before David Kelly slotted a neat point from a difficult angle. Adrian Marren hit the target to ease them into a 0-04 to 0-01 lead by the 16th minute, and it was looking good for the underdogs. Mayo’s finishing let them down badly, with Andy Moran and Keith Higgins both fisting wide from just a few yards out, and they went 22 minutes without scoring until Enda Varley converted a free Barry Moran also had a crack at goal charged down by Johnny Martyn,
leaving Mayo trailing by 0-05 to 0-03 at the break. But the defending champions, once they got the gusting wind in their backs, started to move more fluently, and they were level by the ninth minute of the second half. Andy Moran, Cillian O’Connor (free) and Barry Moran all hit the target to tie it up at 0-06 apiece, but two massive ground kicks into the wind one a ’45 and the other a 50-metre free - from Davie Maye had the Yeatsmen back in front But Mayo stepped it up once again, with O’Shea making an impact off the bench and slicing over a point to bring the sides level for the fourth time. Scores from wing-backs Colm Boyle and Lee Keegan pushed Mayo back in front, and despite losing midfielder Barry Moran to a second yellow card, they held on to win by two points. Mayo scorers: C O’Connor 0-03 (2f, 1 ’45), A Dillon 0-02, A Moran, B Moran,

The tally of nine previous finals includes the fact that in 1975 there were two games, the first one being a draw before Sligo prevailed in the replay. Mayo have won six of their nine previous final duels with the Yeats County, but Sligo will take solace from the fact that two of three victories in the Connacht Championship came against Mayo in the final.

It's been a fun ride says ex county star
P
EARCE Hanley admits he was more concerned with sinking beer than he was with perfecting his drop punt during his first two years with the Brisbane Lions. But after copping a rocket from the Lions, and a few choice words from then football manager Graeme 'Gubby' Allan, Hanley knuckled down and changed his ways. The popular Irishman will play his 100th game against the Sydney Swans at the Gabba the same day that his county face Sligo in the connacht final, but even he conceded that looked a long way off in the early days. "I think I was drunk my first two years," Hanley joked on Friday. "I still had a great time and it's made me who I am now. My professionalism has got a lot better and I'm really enjoying my footy at the moment and I've definitely pulled my head in." After being plucked from Ireland by Allan and the Lions at the end of 2007, Hanley says his lack of professionalism almost cost him a second contract at the club. He came from County Mayo as a 19-year-old who had enjoyed the university lifestyle and amateur Gaelic football. It was difficult to change his ways. "It dawned on me at my three-year mark," Hanley said. "I got in a bit of strife and thought I was in a bit of trouble. The club were very good to stand by me. "I thought I wasn't going to be given another contract and I thought I was going to be sent home. "I remember I got a bit emotional in front of the boys and I think from there I turned my year around. "The next pre-season I knuckled down and from there my game has got better and better and I've turned into the player I am today." That player is undoubtedly one of the best Irish imports to grace the AFL, arguably behind only Jim Stynes and Tadhg Kennelly. Hanley combines his love of running and bouncing the ball to break lines, with an exquisite kick and vision that is among the best at the club. Before off-season hip surgery cost him the first nine games of this season, Hanley had played 84 of the Lions' previous 88 games – a mark of his improved durability and professionalism. The 26-year-old is now a game-changer and says he has no regrets about the boozy start to his career. "I think it's turned me into the person I am today," he said. "When I came I was pretty much the worst player on the list because my skills were bad, my game knowledge was bad, everything. "It's just grown from there. Looking at my transition over the years, it's been a fun ride. "It just takes hard work. It's taken a long time but I'm very proud of myself for managing to reach it." Hanley's family has flown out from Ireland to be with him for the milestone. His mother, younger brother and two sisters have been in Australia the past fortnight to join him and younger brother Cian, who is on the Lions list and recovery from an ACL injury.

1975 - Was It Really Mayo's Worst-Ever Defeat?
Article courtesy of www.spailpin.blogspot.ie
J
uly, 1975. 10cc weren’t in love in the charts, Muhammad Ali warmed up for the Thrilla in Manilla by pounding Joe Bugner in Kuala Lumper, and Jaws was revolutionising the movie industry in the USA. Across the broad Atlantic on the west coast of Ireland, the Mayo football team hit the nadir of their sixty-years and counting wait for a fourth All-Ireland senior football title. For some reason, the defeat to Sligo in 1975 is seen as Mayo’s Guernica – the greatest horror among a long catalog of horrors. And at forty years’ remove when Mayo face Sligo in the Connacht Final once more, it’s reasonable to ask why. Why was that 1975 defeat so much worse than any of the other horrors that happened before or since? Sligo were no bad team in 1975. Barnes Murphy, an All-Star winner in 1974, was coach and captain at centre-half back, and even in those amateur days Sligo went to the effort of bringing Brian McEniff down from Donegal to take some training sessions. Sligo had form, having dispatched Galway to get to the Connacht Final in the first place. And they had Mickey Kearins, Eamon O’Hara’s one challenger to the title of Greatest Ever Sligo Player. Kearins had a lot of miles on the clock by 1975 and looked it, but he was the one man Mayo feared. Sligo certainly didn’t fear Mayo. In the week leading to the game,
Sligo’s Johnny Stenson
Barnes Murphy led Sligo to only their second Connacht success in '75
the Irish Press quoted a bullish Barnes Murphy on how glad he was that it was Mayo that Sligo faced in the final, a quote that places what Mayo football was like at the time in context: “You always have an inferiority complex if you come up against Galway while Roscommon are a bit of a hoodoo team for us. But we do not feel
that way at all about Mayo. After all, in recent matches, we have beaten them as often as they have beaten us.” The Connacht Final in Markiewicz Park on July 6, 1975, was a draw, 2-10 to 1-13 on a beautiful day for football. Sligo went into a six point lead which Mayo slowly clawed back in the second half. Each had their chances of winning of it in the last ten minutes, but didn’t take them. A replay was fixed for two weeks later in Castlebar. Sideline 50p, schoolboys 20p. Which of them left it behind in the drawn game was a matter of perspective. The Western People felt that there was a “primary difference between the counties: Sligo’s self-doubt based on years of inferiority as against Mayo’s utter conviction that, when they put their minds down to it, there is no way Sligo can deny them.” Barnes Murphy didn’t much care for them apples. On the Saturday before the replay, he provided Mayo with more dressing-room material, again courtesy of the Irish Press: “We know we have the beating of Mayo and indeed we had the winning of the drawn game. Remember we were on top in the opening stages and then that unlucky penalty knocked us out of our stride.” While the drawn game was a fine game, the replay in Castlebar was just plain dirty. It was scrappy, with a lot of needle and no small amount of off-the-ball exchanges. Mayo’s best line was at half-back, but in midfield there were serious problems. Mayo named Richie Bell and Frank Burns at midfield for the drawn game. Burns, who also played rugby for Connacht, was a veteran, while Bell was part of a Mayo Under-21 team that won the 1974 All-Ireland and came into the
senior squad in the winter of ‘74. But Bell got injured before the drawn game, with his place taken by Charlestown’s Eamon Brett. Brett hurt his shoulder two minutes in the drawn game, and Des McGrath came on then. Mayo makeshift midfield struggled badly in the drawn game, and had to haul Seán Kilbride back from full-forward to bail water. It was a bridge too far in the replay, where Sligo’s mustachioed hero Johnny Stenson bossed the skies and Mayo, even with Kilbride brought back to help out, couldn’t compete. When you lose midfield your full-backs will be exposed to shot and shell. Mayo famously hauled John O’Mahony ashore after eleven minutes but the real damage was being done on Johnno’s left. Mickey Kearins had been quiet in the drawn game but he wrecked havoc in the replay, smashing home a penalty and setting up the second Sligo goal. When the dust cleared, Sligo had won by a point, 2-10 to 0-15. The Mayo News was phlegmatic in its analysis: “This is a young Mayo team. They have the winning of a number of Connacht titles and possibly an even bigger one. They have the spirit and another year will make a better team of them.” The Western People was more robust: “A total indifference to warnings about the quality of the full-back line, being too smart by half with full-forward/midfield switches, and the employment of doubtful tactics which robbed the half-forward line of impact, finally culminated in disaster, just as emphatic, in fact, as in the league semi-final against Meath.” Quite the rant, and there was more to come: “There is no use in selectors dodging the issue by asking where the replacements
needed might have come from. It was their job to find them and they didn’t have to cast their net very far. For, and make no mistake about it, there are certainly better players around than at least eight of the men who were on duty or standby last Sunday.” Unfortunately, the Western didn’t go so far as to name an alternative team, and it’s all in the realm of conjecture now. But on the face of it, it’s hard to understand why that game above all others was seen as such a lowwater mark. Sligo might be poor relations historically in Connacht, but that was a good team they had in the 1970s. They got destroyed by Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final, but that Kerry team would munch up and spit out far prouder counties than the Yeatsmen. Cork, for instance. That Sligo team always had a Nestor Cup in them, and it was Mayo’s bad luck to meet them when destiny smiled. It was also Mayo’s bad luck to suffer that bizarre series of injuries at midfield. Not that Bell playing would necessarily have changed things – he and Stenson both now field the dropping ball in Heavenly pastures, may God be good to both of them – but the makeshift third-string midfield can’t be dismissed as a factor in Mayo’s defeat. JP Kean reflects in Keith Duggan’s magnificent House of Pain that if his shot on goal in the first game had been three inches lower and avoided the crossbar the entire history of Mayo could be different. But of course, it didn’t, it’s not and life is very much like that. Sometimes it’s not a curse. Sometimes the other guys are just better. Mayo lost to Sligo in 1975 because Sligo were better and wanted it more. Simple as that.

n Saturday the 1st of August 2015 the 69th annual North Sligo Agricultural Show will be held in Grange. The North Sligo Agricultural Show has a long tradition within the local community. The first North Sligo Agricultural Show actually took place on Wednesday, September 12, 1945. However, due to the ‘foot and mouth’ crisis a few years ago, the annual show had to be cancelled. During 1945 Grange village was very much isolated and had no running water or electricity. There were very few cars or tractors. Nevertheless, the first show attracted 1,150 entries. There were up to 100 classes for fruit, vegetables, flowers, agricultural produce, woodwork, homecrafts, knitting, needlework, crochet, poultry and eggs, cattle, horses, sheep and donkeys. Since then the show has grown from strength to strength, which has
been possible through local community support and participation of volunteers. Many agricultural shows have run into difficulties in recent years, with some disappearing altogether, but the North Sligo event is continuing to be run very successfully. The committee are hoping that the weather, Mike Denver and the new competions can continue to bring a big crowd this year. The show gets under way at 11am with the cattle and sheep judging, followed by the confined sheep classes starting at 11:30. This year there are several horse and pony classes commencing at 12pm and donkey showing at 2pm. The afternoon programme gets underway at 12:30pm in the Show field. There will be the usual classes in agricultural produce such as vegetables, flowers, baking, photography, crafts, etc. in addition to poultry exhibitions.

Midwest Radio will broadcast live from the show on the day, also entertainment on the field including on stage one; Pats Country Roadshow from 12-3pm, Patrick Feeney from 3-5pm, and stage two; Padraic & Jason 10.30-12.30pm and The Outlaws from 1-3pm. A special word of gratitude must go to the exhibitors, competitors, stewards, committee and landowners who each year make the event bigger and better than ever. This day would not be possible without the generosity of the sponsors who come from near and far and the committee wish to sincerely thank all of them who have contributed to make the Bonniconlon Show the successful event it now is.

Facts Westport town was designed in the Mid 1700's by James Wyatt, in a Georgian Architectural Style. The town layout follows medieval principles of 13th century urban design featuring landmarks of the Carrowbeg River, tree lined malls, pretty colourful streets, iconic monuments of the Clock and the Octagon as well as the nearby Westport House & Pirate Adventure Park. Westport has an extensive awards portfolio, in recent weeks Westport was named as one of the Top 10 Finalists of the Foodie Destinations. Not only was Westport crowned The Best Place to Live in Ireland by The Irish Times, it was also accredited as Ireland's Tidiest Large Town 2012, Ireland's Best Kept Large Town 2012 and the Retail Excellence Best Town in Ireland!

estport is one of Ireland’s major tourist destinations. Located at the south-east corner of Clew Bay the town has many picturesque features, most notably its tree-lined, flower decorated, boulevard known as The Mall with several stone bridges over the Carrowbeg river. Westport is host to an array of sights and activities that will appeal to the entire family. Young or old will enjoy it as it is small enough to get around by foot. If historic buildings are your thing the town itself is heavily influenced with some wonderful Georgian architecture. It is renowned for its spectacular scenery and deep-sea fishing and angling. It also sports a world-class golf course, guided walks, horseback riding, and is in close proximity to Connemara, Achill, Clew Bay and Croagh Patrick. On a recent visit we spent our two nights in the Westport Coast hotel and we could not have asked for a better hotel. Just a short
stroll from the famed Westport House it had everything that a visitor could wish for. We found the staff and the hotel facilities to be fantastic. The reception staff were very welcoming and friendly. After a day touring Westport House and sampling the delights the foodfare had to offer it was great to spend time in the swimming pool & leisure facilities. The room we stayed in was a superior family room, which had a double and single bed in main area of room, it also had a wee living room area with another single bed and couch. To have that little area to relax when kids went to bed was a godsend. Breakfast on both mornings was a real treat with as much as one could eat. If looking for a vibrant weekend break, a family fun holiday or a leisurely retreat, look no further than Westport, Co. Mayo which has a host of year round activities, adventure races, festivals, as well as some 50 bustling pubs and restaurants - it's the
Irish town where something is always going on. It is no wonder why this coastal town is one of Ireland's most popular holiday destinations, for all walks of life.
The Great Western Greenway The Great Western Greenway is a recent addition to Westport's attractions which features 42km of an off road cycling and walking trail which captures some of the most breathtaking views of Clew Bay and dramatic mountain scenery along the renowned Westport to Achill railway which was closed in 1937. The Greenway passes through picturesque villages of Newport and Mulranny where services and collection points area available. The famous pilgrimage mountain of Croagh Patrick, known locally as "the Reek", lies

some 10 km westof the town near the villages of Murrisk and Lecanvey. The mountain offers a striking backdrop to thetown. The church on the summit can just be made out with the naked eye from Westport. Westport is nestled around the shores of Clew Bay which hosts 365 islands and inlets off (an island foreach day of the year!). The bay is best seen from the summit of Croagh Patrick on a clear day or on the main approach to Westport via the N4 Castlebar Road.
Westport House & Gardens Westport is home to Westport House & Gardens which was once was home to the pirate queen Grace O'Malley, in the mid-to-late 16th century. The house stands today as Ireland's most

beautiful historic home and is a popular visitor attraction. There magnificent big house is now owned and operated by The Browne Family, direct descendants of Grace O' Malley. The House has an abundance of original artefacts, artwork and treasures that will fascinate all culture-vultures with a total of 30 rooms on show. The story of the people behind the house is equally fascinating as the house itself with a history of pirates, slave emancipators and pioneers; it couldn't be anything but riveting! For over 300 years, the Browne's have worked passionately to preserve this beautiful piece of Irish heritage and the story of this commitment is told throughout the house in guided and self-guided tours, 5 permanent exhibitions and reading materials.

Laugh out loud: The healing benefits of laughter and increase motivation, and to the health-care profession to promote and maintain health. But he cautions, “Occasionally, you hear wild claims that laughter therapy cures cancer or a terminal illness. The therapy holds great promise, but there is a danger of creating false expectations.”
A
little chuckle goes a long way when it comes to maintaining your health. Body and soul have a laugh and you’ll get happy! “Laughter is an instant vacation.” When Milton Berle (pictured) said this, he wasn’t too far off, according to some researchers who think laughter is like a wonder drug capable of treating a host of maladies related to stress and lifestyle. “Laughter therapy is making people laugh for healing purposes,” says Albert Nerenberg, a journalist, documentary filmmaker (for instance, Laughlology, in 2009) and laughologist, an expert who lectures on the science, practice and therapeutic effects of laughter. He brings the therapy to the workplace to help relieve stress
Researchers continue to study laughter’s effects and have made some discoveries on how it benefits our well-being. Brain chemicals From a neurological perspective, pioneering studies by Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan of Loma Linda University Medical Center in California have shown that laughing triggers a flood of pleasure-inducing neurotransmitters, like dopamine, in the brain. Low levels of both these brain chemicals are associated with the winter blues and Seasonal Affective Disorder, which affects almost 20 per cent of Canadians. Nerenberg has been using laughter therapy to help treat drug addicts at a residential drug rehab centre located near the Quebec-U.S. border. “Laughing produces dopamine in the brain much in the same way
as cocaine,” he explains, “so you essentially substitute laughing fits for drug addiction, addicting people to a positive behaviour rather than a negative one. They’re after rushes and really don’t care where they get them.” Immune response A depressed immune system is vulnerable to colds and viruses. According to a 2001 study in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, laughter boosts the activity of your system’s natural killer cells and other defences by increasing the number of antibody-producing cells. Laughter enhances the response of disease-killing cells such as gamma-interferon, diseasefighting protein; B cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies; and T cells, key to immune system response. Stress response “We once thought laughter was the opposite of crying, but it’s more appropriate to think of it as the opposite of stress,” explains Nerenberg. He says laughter affects the nervous and endocrine systems by metabolizing stress hormones, which include cortisol and adrenaline, the fight-or-flight compounds released during times of stress. Stress hormones bombard the heart, forcing it to beat as if in a constant state of fight or flight. But laughter appears to reduce the amount of
stress hormones your body produces. Blood flow A good laugh can be good for your heart. Laughter helps expand capillaries, increasing blood and oxygen flow throughout your body. This may help protect against heart attacks and strokes by relaxing constricted blood vessels and promoting relaxation, which may lower levels of cortisol, a hormone known to contribute to high blood pressure, as do constricted blood vessels. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin measured the blood flow of 17 volunteers after watching a comedy or a documentary. The comedy group showed significantly increased heart rate and blood flow of 17 per cent for up to 24 hours. Conversely, among the documentary viewers, blood vessels constricted by 15 per cent. Constricted arteries can lead to high blood pressure. Social benefits Laughing with others is more powerful than laughing alone, so plan some face time with friends. Sharing laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships strong and resilient. Simply anticipating laughter was found to release beneficial hormones while lowering levels of harmful chemicals in the body. Laughter can also stimulate

Encourage your own healthier outlook by adding these simple laughter-inducing habits. Smile early and often in the day; it produces a mild hormonal change that can improve your mood and produce positive emotions. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and, like laughter, it’s contagious. Look up at the ceiling, and you’ll notice a positive lift. There’s no science to explain this, but it’s a fairly universal phenomenon, says Nerenberg. The opposite is true as well; if you walk around looking down, you’ll start to feel down. Fake it till you feel it Just going through the motions will trigger real laughter. Studies show the positive effects of smiling occur even if the smile is fake; faked laughter also provides the same benefits.

creative thoughts that lead to a greater sense of self-worth and optimism. Speaking of optimism In 2011, Nerenberg worked with Maxwell House on a survey about optimism, and the results are positive. Eighty-five per cent of us consider ourselves optimistic; 86 per cent of us feel that optimism is contagious; and 79 per cent of us try to encourage pessimists to be more optimistic.
