HE new Public Services card being introduced at present by the Department of Social Protection should impact on the level of fare evasion currently experienced by Irish Rail. This is the view of local company personnel. In recent times a record-breaking number of passengers have being fined and convicted in the courts for failing to purchase a train ticket. The company has increased inspections across the country as it steps up its effort to clamp down on fare evaders nationwide. In the first six months of this year 5,269 fines of €100 were issued, with €900 being the largest fine imposed on an individual. The level of convictions in 2015 for fare evasion is set to break all previous figures, with a total of 339 convictions made in the District Court. Meanwhile, 350 misused free travel passes have been confiscated. Irish Rail said the rise is as a result of revenue protection activity across the network - with officers based in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Waterford, Galway, Westport and Mullingar. Many middle-aged passengers are issued with fines. While some are apologetic and take it in their stride, others protest their innocence and became argumentative. One unassuming man in his 50's, dressed in business attire, was hit with a €100 fine for a common fare evasion tactic. Instead of buying a ticket to his destination, which could have been an hour away, he purchased a ticket to the next stop down the track. Another man in his 20s was caught with a child's ticket - which inspectors say is a frequent method used by those looking to evade paying. Robert Tobin, Irish Rail Revenue Protection manager, said his team of 48 officers deal with aggressive passengers on a daily basis. "It's part of the job. Some people can become aggressive while we're carrying out our duties. Continued on Page 2

Work of Sligo’s Tidy Towns’ Group rewarded www.inkdispatch.com The Maud Gonne mural on the Inner Relief Road. Photo: Val Robus/Magnumlady.com
The work of Sligo’s voluntary Tidy Towns’ committee was richly rewarded recently when the town collected two ‘highly commended’ awards at the 2015 SuperValu National Tidy Towns Awards Ceremony in the Helix, Dublin. The commendations were presented for the group’s work during 2015 in the area of Sustainable Waste and Resource Management. Cash prizes of €1000 and €500 were presented to the Sligo Tidy Towns representatives at the ceremony under the headings ‘valuing water’ and ‘waste management’. Letterkenny from County Donegal was named Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2015. It received 323 marks out of a possible 450 from the adjudicators. Sligo scored 273, up 10 marks on last year. The adjudicators noted, "Speaking of catching the eye, the murals seen in Sligo this year rival anything this adjudicator has seen anywhere in Ireland. Jawdropping isn’t something easily owned up to but the rendering of Maud Gonne was
this good. Car-parks, gables and otherwise nondescript walls were stunningly treated. Vacant buildings and shop windows have been turned into exhibitions. Commenting on the 2015 results, the Chairperson of Sligo Tidy Towns Jim Lawlor said: “It’s another solid result for Sligo Tidy towns. We’ve risen 39 marks in the last four years. Everybody is moving in the right direction,” he said. “However, there is still much more work to do. We are still some 13 marks off a bronze medal in our category. We look to forward to studying the adjudicator’s report in detail, which will help us shape our plans for 2016.” The 2015 National Tidy Towns Competition attracted a record 862 entries. 23 towns and villages from across County Sligo took part this year including Aclare, Coney Island and Mullaghmore. Sligo Tidy Towns will host a special Thank You evening for all its volunteers, friends and supporters on Thursday, October 8th in the Sligo Park Hotel at 8pm. All are welcome.

Sleep Out for local Simon Community a great Success
O
ver 30 brave participants took part in this year’s annual street sleep in Sligo town to raise vital funds for North West Simon Communities services in Sligo. The street sleep was also to raise awareness of the work of the local Simon Community in combating rural “invisible” homelessness. All participants raised funds through sponsorship and these funds will make a huge
difference to people who are struggling in Sligo. There was a great mix of people on the night all in high spirits while enduring the elements for just one night of the year. All volunteers were going home to a warm bed and all the little luxuries that you take for granted. Development Officer with North West Simon Community commented, “ all the participants did so well to spend the night out and it was
a real eye opener to what street homeless people have to endure, thanks so much for getting involved” Thank you to over 38 local businesses for sponsoring €50 to “adopt a sleeper , the local charity are very thankful to the local business community for their support. Special thanks to Sligo County Council for a small grant toward the street sleep, also to the Four Lanterns for
their huge hospitality on the night and to Mullaney’s for allowing the participants to use the doorway as a bed for the night. Thanks to all who donated on the night and to the pubs who allowed “street sleepers” to collect. Sincere thanks goes to all who slept out and collected money for the cause, gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. We all should be thankful we have a roof over our heads as anyone can slip through the cracks. If you wish to sign up to next year’s street sleep, please e mail mary@northwestsimon.ie It will be on Fri 7th Oct 2016. The charity wish to get more business people involved in sleeping out for one night. The Street Sleep was part of Simon Week event’s, the charity annual street collection was in Sligo town on Thurs 1st Oct and thanks to all who supported and to all volunteers for shaking a bucket. Thanks to all the café’s who took part in “Soup for Simon” in Co. Sligo.

New public services card can reduce fare evasion Continued from front page In situations like that we just have to deal with it as best we can," he said. "All our officers are trained in conflict resolution. There have been some issues where garda assistance is required when we are looking for the name and address of an individual and
they won't cooperate.” Unlike other European countries where passengers may be able to purchase their fares while on the train, or after the journey, anybody travelling on Irish Rail must buy a ticket prior to travel. Mr. Tobin said there are plenty of opportunities to purchase in advance as they have ticket vending machines

and booking offices at almost every station throughout the country. Once a suspected fare evader is issued with a €100 fine, the passenger has 21 days to either pay or appeal. Non-payment can land a person in court, where the potential fine is up to €1,000, and can carry a criminal conviction against their name.
In 2014 the company issued 9,885 fines of €100, up from 8,081 in 2013 and up from 6,613 in 2012. A total of 356 convictions were secured in court. Those who do not use rail travel may be surprised at the level of evasion and convictions. The Public Services Card should help to reduce one potential source of evasion.

IFA President calls on Taoiseach to support rural Ireland
A
t the 60th Anniversary Mayo IFA Dinner-Dance held recently IFA President Eddie Downey called on the Taoiseach to support people living in rural Ireland. Mr. Kenny attended the function held in the Castlecourt Hotel, Westport. When the present government set about reforming our balance of payments the farming community more than played their part. Exports of products from Irish farms
were leading the way in the country's recovery. The ambitious targets set out by the government in their agenda 2020 to increase the exports of farm products by 50% is well ahead of target. However, farmers find themselves the victims of the market. Last year beef prices collapsed and this year’s milk prices to the farmer have dropped by 33%. He told Mr. Kenny that

people who require full time supervised care. The Memorial Centre will receive grant aid of 70% towards the construction costs from Leader. However, the balance of 30% must be financed by the Centre from local funding. On completion, it will be obligatory for the residential unit to comply with the Department of Health's standard of furnishings, fittings and sanitation. To achieve and adhere to the required standards will be very expensive and the Centre is appealing for financial assistance in order to realise its goal. The aid of the sponsored cycle is to raise 30,000 to meet those costs. An attempt will be made to accumulate on stationary bikes enough miles to go from Attymass to Massachussetts. It is hoped to raise €30,000 by going 3,000 miles and cyclists are being sought to help in the fundraising event. The event will take place in the audio-visual room of the Fr. Peyton Centre. To add to the atmosphere, scenery shots and background up-beat music will help the cyclist on his/her journey. Also on the day there will be a harvest festival comprising of stalls with local produce for sale. If you are a regular country market supplier please contact the Centre.

he Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council, Cllr. Michael Holmes visited St. Mary’s Secondary School in Ballina last week to launch the reusable drink bottle scheme. The scheme which is a waste prevention initiative of the Environment Department of Mayo County Council is aimed
at first year students in all secondary schools throughout the County. All schools in the County have been offered a reusable drinks bottle for each of their first year students. The bottles carrying the slogan ‘One Earth - Make it Last’ were accepted with enthusiasm by the first year students.
Each year thousands of disposable drink bottles are used in secondary schools throughout Mayo. While the majority of the bottles are now recycled the culture of using so much disposable bottles has a significant environmental impact. As part of the launch, Sharon

Mayo Co Council Cathaoirleach Michael Holmes launched the Mayo School's Reusable Drinks Bottles Campaign in Ballina 's environmental award-winning St Mary's Secondary School. First year students Amy McGrath, Aoife Mahony, Tessa Syron and Hannah Forbes and all the school's students were delighted to support the campaign to improve our county's environment. Also included at the launch were Sharon Cameron and Mary Forde, Environment Office Mayo Co Council along with St Mary's School Principal Patsy Sweeney and Green School Coordinator Jesica Wall. Picture Henry WIlls.
Cameron, Environment Awareness Officer with Mayo County Council outlined the environmental impact of the use of disposable bottles to the 95 first year students in St. Marys Secondary School. “It takes 162g of oil and seven litres of water just to manufacture a one-litre bottle, creating over 100g of greenhouse gas emissions per empty bottle. To make the 29 billion plastic bottles used annually in the US, the world's biggest consumer of bottled water, requires more than 17 million barrels of oil a year, enough to fuel more than a million cars for a year. This is a huge amount for just one disposable item” Cllr. Michael Holmes welcomed the initiative and also congratulated Principal Ms. Patsy Sweeney, Green School Coordinator Ms. Jessica Wall and the Green Schools Committee on the schools achievement of being awarded their Green Flag by An Taisce just before the summer break. The students of St. Mary’s Secondary Schools were also recently awarded with a National Award - the ‘WEEE Achievers Award 2015’ by WEEE Ireland at Google Head Quarters in Dublin. This award was to mark the schools significant efforts in the WEEE Pledge Battery Programme.

member of a group of seven or more TDs, hence the existence of the Technical Group. It is worth remembering that a significant amount of work has been done by this group of Independent TDs . The Alliance shows that I can remain Independent and represent the voters as my main priority. The Alliance will also allow disparate groups to work together for the purpose of solving societal problems: surely this is the essence of what democracy is all about. A better democracy leads to a better economy. There have been five major economic crashes in the history of the State, all of which have been presided over by the main political parties. In my opinion this economic record is a major cause of concern. I will always be loyal to my voters and not to a remote and unaccountable political party. Any vote I will take as a member of Dail Eireann I will make in the best interests of the constituency and the country. Independents can support Governments on key issues, and also introduce parliamentary reform. The key issues I wish to focus on are: • Fair and balanced investment in the regions such that all parts of the country gain and not just the major urban areas of Dublin, Cork and Galway cities; • Education investment from pre-school through to third level, including investment in a national system of childcare we can all be proud of; • Infrastructural investment including the construction of

dedication, commitment and care our young people invest in helping others in their local communities and I’d urge even more young people to get involved in the program which has supported incredible youth volunteers over the past ten years.” The call was supported by The National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals (NAPD); The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI), Scouting Ireland and Foróige which partner with Letterkenny based Pramerica Systems Ireland, in communicating to young people that nominations are now open. Speaking about the 10th anniversary of the awards, Andrea McBride, vice president, Pramerica, said, “It has been an honour and a privilege recognising inspiring young people from across Ireland over the last ten years who have

s the current Dáil enters its last autumn session before the General Election, Women for Election have produced a league table of counties who have the best record of electing women. According to the Director of Operations and Campaigns, Suzanne Collins, when Dublin and Cork with their multiple constituencies are excluded, Sligo is close to the bottom of the league table for electing women over the past 97 years. “A total of 1,242 TDs have been elected since 1918 and only 95 of them have been women. While Sligo as part
of the Sligo-Leitrim constituency has elected a total of two women in that time, only one, Marian Harkin has hailed from Sligo itself. “Of the other counties around the country, the average number of women elected in each since 1918 is two. “While the number of women elected since 1918 has been shockingly low – so have the number of women running. In many cases, the electorate will have had little or no choice on the ballot paper. This time, we are already at unprecedented numbers of female candidates. At 98 candidates the number of women currently running
exceeds the number who have ever been elected to Dáil Éireann and make up over 30% of the currently declared candidates. Currently two out of nine declared candidates in the new constituency of Sligo-Leitrim are female and both Maire Casserly and Susan O’Keeffe are from Sligo. “As we enter the last autumn session of the 31st Dáil, it is worth considering the huge potential that there is for it to be the last Dáil with so few women. With the support of electorate for female candidates, the 32nd Dáil could change the face of Irish politics and truly make history.”

he Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards programme has launched its annual search for Ireland’s top youth volunteers and is calling on County Sligo students to enter the awards. The 2016 programme year marks the 10th anniversary of the Pramerica Spirit of Community Awards, the only all-Ireland youth initiative of its kind which rewards postprimary students for outstanding acts of volunteerism and the positive contribution they make in their local communities and further afield. This year, for the first time, applications can be submitted and completed online at www.pramerica.ie/spirit. Over 1,500 students across the island of Ireland have been recognised and rewarded for the commitment they have
given their time to volunteer and help those less fortunate than themselves. “As we launch the awards in this special anniversary year, we want to motivate more young people from schools throughout Ireland to get involved in community service activities and take up the chance to be part of this great event. Many young people take part in volunteering activities that have a real impact, and we continue to be inspired by their selfless acts and by the continuous contribution they make to local communities.” Application forms are available at www.pramerica.ie/spirit. Students must complete their applications and submit them to their Principal or Deputy Principal by 23 October. Principals then have until 6th November to nominate students for national-level recognition. Every school can submit a maximum of two applications to go forward for national judging. Prizes for the 20 finalists include €500, an invitation to the Gala Awards dinner and fantastic recognition for the school. Two All-Ireland Youth Volunteers of the Year will also be selected from the finalists, each of whom will receive €1,000 for their chosen charity and a trip to the United States. For further updates on the launch of the 10th annual awards, follow the Pramerica Spirit of Community Facebook page and Twitter feed, or visit www.pramerica.ie/spirit. Past finalists, honourees, teachers, partners, supporters and ambassadors are also encouraged to connect with the programme and share their anniversary messages and memories via the Facebook and Twitter pages.

Sweden is shifting to a six-hour work day
S
weden, the land of Vikings, IKEA and ABBA, is shifting to a six-hour work day. Unlike the rest of us masochists, who seem
determined to work longer hours despite a number of studies showing its detriment to health, happiness and productivity, businesses across
Sweden have already made the switch to the shorter working day, and many more are trialling it. The Toyota service centres in
Gothenburg switched to a sixhour day 13 years ago and report happier staff, a lower turnover rate and, to no one’s surprise, ease in enticing new employees to join the company. Profits have risen 25 per cent. ‘I think the 8-hour work day is not as effective as one would think,’ Linus Feldt, CEO of Stockholm app developer Filimundus.‘To stay focused on a specific work task for 8 hours is a huge challenge. In order to cope, we mix in things and pauses to make the work day more endurable. At the same time, we are having it hard to manage our private life outside of work.’ The logic goes that if the working day is shorter, staff will be more motivated and have more energy to complete the same volume of work in less time. On top of higher productivity, Feldt says staff conflicts have plummeted simply because employees are happier and better-rested. Pack your bags – we’re going to Sweden.
Teacher faces the sack after ‘hitting boy with book’ when he refused to turn off his music
A
n experienced Maths and German teacher could be sacked after allegedly hitting a pupil with a book and throwing his mobile phone out of the window. Regina Hungerford, 54, admitted to losing her temper after a 17-year-old student refused to turn off a music video on his mobile phone. The teacher from Merthyr Tydfil College in South Wales had denied hitting her pupil with a book but was found guilty after a trial at Merthyr Tydfil Magistrates’ Court. She was given a 12-month community order and ordered her to complete 60 hours unpaid work. Ms Hungerford is planning to appeal
Merthyr Tydfil college in South Wales
her conviction as this would prevent her continuing her 25 year-long involvement with the girl guides and her teaching career. Her defence barrister Peter Doninson told the court : ‘The real sentence she will suffer is not the sentence of the court but the loss of her employment and loss of work with the girl guides. ‘She can no longer volunteer in the community and that is a loss to her well being and the community that she supports.’ Ms Hungerford said: ‘This has ruined my life and I want to do my best to overturn this miscarriage of justice.’

Bad hair day? At least you’re not this woman, who used builder’s foam instead of mousse…
If you think you’re having a bad hair day, then spare a thought for this woman who apparently mistook builder’s foam for hair mousse. She ended up in A&E somewhere in Eastern Europe, according to social media, and her picture has been shared widely. The expanding polyurethane should be used for DIY to prevent leaks, fill gaps, or hold something in place. Something like a wobbly window frame or a bath. Not hair.
Couple lose almost everything they own after Facebook removal van scam A family who fell victim to a ‘removal man scam’ have lost almost everything they own. Becky Szenk, 22, and fiancé Mark Higgins, 28, had their furniture, clothes, photographs and even Becky’s engagement ring stolen by the two men they believed to be removal men. The couple, who estimate their stolen belongings to be worth about £10,000, booked the ‘removal men’ after seeing their page on Facebook to move their belongings from their flat in Bilston, near Wolverhampton, to one above the a pub eight miles away they manage. However after the removal men, who were described as courteous and polite, packed up the family’s belongings and drove off they were never seen again. Their Facebook page, calling the business Lee Green, was also removed from the site. Becky said: ‘The men had told me in advance to pack all of our belongings into boxes and label them up clearly – I didn’t realise at the time, but they took the most valuable items first.’ ‘I have never cried more in my life than I did on Friday afternoon – I am so distraught that they have taken my engagement ring and my baby’s toys,’ she added. ‘Some people have come forward recently to provide us with essentials, but we still don’t have everything,’ she said. ‘I have to put my daughter first and it important that she is looked after before Mark and I have what we need to live.’ West Midlands Police confirmed they are investigating and treating the crime as theft.

Energy Mythbusting
Is it cheaper to have the heating on all day?
S
hould you keep your heating on all day on low? And what about painting radiators black? We've gone on an energy mythbusting mission, so you can find out if common tricks to cut energy usage really work.
Here are the key questions you asked, with their answers below. Should I leave the heating on low all day, or turn the thermostat up and down?
This one divides opinion. Some say you'll save energy, and therefore money, by only having the heating on when it's required. Using a timer is best, because your thermostat is designed to turn your heating system on and off to keep your
home at the temperature you set it. However it's a grey area. Another school of thought says it is best to keep the heating on at a low temperature all day, turning all radiator valves up to the max, and the boiler down to the minimum. Should I keep the hot water boiler on all the time, or turn it on and off as needed? If you have a gas, oil or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) central heating system, it will always be cheaper to time the system so the hot water comes on only when required. However, if you use an electrical immersion heater and have an night-time tariff (where energy is cheaper at night), it's cheaper to heat your water during the night. Make sure your tank is well insulated to prevent it cooling during the day, though. Is it cheaper to use radiators or electric heaters? Electric heaters are one of the most expensive forms of heating. Generally, the cheapest way is using an efficient oil/gas central heating system, with a full set of thermostatic radiator valves, a room thermostat and a timer. Do phone or laptop chargers still use electricity when they're plugged in, but not connected to
the device? Try to unplug chargers when not in use. A lot of devices draw power when plugged in and not in use. This is sometimes known as 'vampire power'. Using this standby power can be easily avoided by switching devices off at the wall. Electric providers say on its website that leaving chargers in a socket uses energy (if the charger is warm, it's using energy). It says that some chargers (including those from Apple) turn themselves off when not connected to a device. It adds that, generally, branded chargers are more efficient than nonbranded ones. Should I run appliances at night? If you're on an night-time tariff, you'll pay less during the night, but a higher rate than average during the day. But if you're on another tariff, it doesn't make any difference.

Potato Area Planted Lowest On Record I FA Potato Chairman Eddie Doyle has said two years of abysmal farm gate prices have resulted in a record low in the area of potatoes planted this year in Ireland. With harvesting of main crop new season potatoes starting in earnest this week, Department of Agriculture figures reveal the area of potatoes planted in 2015 represents the lowest on record. Between this year and last there has been a drop of 25% in the area planted. Commenting on the reduced area, IFA Potato Chairman Eddie Doyle said, “I am not surprised. Due to the terrible farm gate prices endured by potato
farmers over the past two seasons, we now have only 8000 ha of potatoes in this country and any further drop in this acreage would leave the industry unsustainable.” The Chairman warned growers need viable farm gate prices this year and the IFA will not tolerate any attempt by merchants or retailers to undermine the market. According to industry sources, potato yields are likely to be down 20% compared to 2014, due to a combination of wet, cold conditions at planting and one of the driest Junes on record in the eastern part of the country. Potato crops in general are running
three weeks behind normal. In the UK, AHDB has released similar figures, which indicate a drop in planted area of 7.8% from 2014 also leading to a record low in potato area planted. Crops in the UK are behind compared to last year, particularly in Scotland with latest yields described as only average and very variable. According to the AMI, the situation in the EU has followed a similar trend with plantings down 4.1% on last year. However, the drought in Europe extended into the first week of August and despite significant rainfall since it is considered to be too late for a lot of crops.
Good Grain Yields Insufficient To Redress Deteriorating Income Situation – Dunne
I
FA National Grain Chairman Liam Dunne said that good grain yields this harvest will be insufficient to redress the deteriorating income situation developing on many tillage farms over the last three years as low
grain prices and escalating input costs erode margins. The EU and trade buyers must support growers through another difficult year. Liam Dunne said, “Good yields on many tillage farms this year
Opening Up Of Glas Scheme Must Be For 20,000 Farmers IFA Rural Development Chairman Flor McCarthy said the priority for Minister Coveney must be to make GLAS available to more than 20,000 farmers from October. This would bring the total in the scheme to nearly 50,000 in 2016 which is in line with commitments laid out in the 2014-2020 RDP. “The GLAS scheme is a vital income lifeline to thousands of farmers for whom REPS and AEOS contracts have finished. The payments are particularly relevant in marginal land areas as well as Natura and commonage areas throughout the country where incomes
are traditionally low.” Flor McCarthy also pointed out that before the new GLAS scheme is introduced some technical changes are necessary in order to make it easier for farmers to maximise their payments. The Rural Development Chairman also highlighted the importance of the forthcoming 2016 Budget. “The allocation to the agrienvironment programme must be increased from €150m this year to €250m next year to pay for those farmers still in AEOS, and the increased number who will be joining GLAS.”
will not redress the fundamental problems facing growers. Rapidly escalating costs, particularly for fertiliser, machinery and machinery spares, coupled with onerous greening requirements imposed by the EU along with
cuts to growers’ Basic and Greening payments are compounding the income situation. The increasing consolidation of the input supply chain has allowed many major multinational companies to significantly boost their returns by pushing through unjustified priced increases while growers struggle to generate modest incomes with little or no money to reinvest in their farm businesses”. “The problem has been compounded by the EU as many growers face significant cuts in their payments and are forced to grow crops to satisfy a bureaucratic greening requirement rather than respond to market needs. This is leading to market distortion, as evidenced by the significant increase in the Irish sown barley and oat areas aggravating an over-supplied oats market. The significant reduction in Irish
cereal sowings of close on 90,000 acres over the last three years is a worrying trend, clearly demonstrating the depth of the crisis facing many tillage farmers.” “The EU Commission must act now to stem the deepening income crisis developing on tillage farms by curbing the undue influence of speculative investors on grain and oilseed prices, abolishing anticompetitive practices by fertiliser manufactures, reforming the three-crop rule to redress market imbalance. European CAN manufacturers have pushed through price increases in recent days despite the ongoing collapse in energy prices. The EU Commission must take immediate action suspend customs duties on imported fertilisers and instigate a sector enquiry into the fertiliser industry.”
More Positive Tone To Beef Market – IFA IFA National Livestock Chairman Henry Burns said there was a more positive tone to the beef market this week and factories are having to pay 5c/kg over the quoted base price for steers of €3.95/kg to get stock. He said the improved weather and tightening
supplies are lifting the trade with more farmers insisting on a base of €4.00/kg for steers and €4.10/kg for heifers. With the IFA and MII meeting on the market situation this week, Henry Burns said there is a strong view among farmers and
agents that numbers will continue to tighten. This is acknowledged by factories, with a number of them trying to tie down commitments on supplies with farmers from late October onwards. He said it is also backed up by the numbers on the AIMS data, which show that there are 100,000 fewer cattle in the 12 to 36 month age bracket available for slaughter, when compared with last year. The IFA Livestock leader said the beef trade in the UK, our major export market had also turned positive with the AHDB reporting the R3 steer price at £3.47/kg, which is the equivalent to €5.00/kg.
He said the AHDB have described “the balance of trade tipping into producer favour” and factories working to “keep a longer pipeline filled.” Henry Burns said the official Department of Agriculture prices for week ending September 9th are also showing that prices are stabilising. He said the average R3 price for steers are at €4.09/kg and the average R3 heifer price is €4.23/kg, similar to the previous week’s level. He said the Department figures also show the both R grade and O grade cow prices have not changed at an average of €3.77 and €3.60/kg respectively.

I
FA National Dairy Chairman Sean O’Leary this week said the August Ornua PPI had barely moved from its July level, from 91.8 to 91.5 points, which was equivalent to a net farm milk price of 26.96c/l incl VAT for 3.3% protein and 3.6% fat milk. This, he said, would help co-ops hold their August milk price, and would play a strong part in the current series of farmer-to-farmer discussion meetings with co-op boards being run this week by the IFA National Dairy Committee as part of its autumn milk price campaign. “GDT and US, NZ and EU futures markets trends in the last two to three weeks have shown that global markets are definitely starting on the road to recovery, though this could take some time. Meanwhile, EU average commodity prices continue weak. It is clear from the PPI that the Irish product mix handled through Ornua, thanks to branding and added value, performs at a higher level. This must give co-ops a very strong reason to hold the August milk price,” Mr O’Leary said. “There is still a lot of detail to be decided on the €500m package of measures brought forward earlier this week by the EU Commission to support various sectors of EU agriculture. The dairy market support measures (APS) in particular need to be implemented swiftly to help speed up the end of the prolonged market downturn,” he said. “In the meantime, the National Dairy Committee members and their County Chairmen have this week called meetings with the processing dairy co-op board members to hold farmer-to-farmer discussions on the impact the serious and prolonged market slump is having on farmers’ incomes and cash flow, as per the IFA’s autumn milk price campaign.” “According to Teagasc, farmers stand to see an average 78% fall in their margins for 2015, and up to one-third may end up losing money. This is an understatement of the severity of the situation, as the Teagasc cost accounting method does not include the farmer’s own labour remuneration, nor bank repayments other than interest costs,” he said. “We are asking co-op boards to stop cutting milk prices, take careful stock of all their business processes to identify potential savings, and devise a plan to deliver on those, up to and including consolidation through mergers where that is in the best interest of dairy farmers. We have also asked them to report on their root and branch review to their shareholders by year end,” The Dairy Chairman concluded.

Eu Support Package Misses Opportunity To Deal With Dairy Volatility
IFA National Dairy Committee Chairman Sean O’Leary has said the €500m budget of non-CAP funding supports agreed by the EU Council this week, probably mostly consisting of superlevy funds, is worthwhile. However, the uses the EU Council and Commission wish to put the fund to in the dairy sector miss out on a major opportunity to deliver a realistic floor for product prices in the context of extreme global market fluctuations EU farmers are poorly equipped to deal with. He asked: “Is the EU again playing for time and leaving farmers to await the inevitable, but slow coming, recovery?” “The intervention system has been characterised by the EU Commission as a ‘safety net’,
yet the Commission and the EU Agriculture Council this week refused not only to increase it, as we believe is absolutely justified and necessary, but even to start on the legally mandated process of reviewing it in light of production costs and market evolutions. Dairy markets are now subject to extreme fluctuations, which farmers need support to manage. Providing a realistic intervention ‘safety net’ rather than a floor, which at 21c/l is several cents below the production costs of even the most efficient EU dairy farmers, should be seen by the EU Commission and the Council as a crucial part of helping farmers to deal with volatility. I am clear that this issue must
be revisited,” he said. “The agreed enhancement of the private storage scheme for dairy products and the reopening of the cheese scheme are all laudable initiatives, although the Council’s announcement is short on operational details. Higher storage cost subsidies and longer storage periods would be beneficial, but we cannot have a situation where the EU Commission tries to replace intervention with private storage,” he said. “The announcement of national funding envelopes to provide additional farmer supports through member states is also still sketchy. IFA would prefer those funds to be used to support markets, thereby speeding up the end to
the current downturn, but it is now Minister Coveney’s job to maximise Ireland’s share of the €500m package,” he said. “Furthermore, while additional promotion for dairy products and work on reopening markets and removing trading obstacles are all very important, their impact tends to be longer term,” he added. “I believe Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney and EU Commissioner Phil Hogan cannot consider their work is done. They must revisit the intervention price level issue, not just with this year’s crisis in mind, but as proof of their real commitment to helping dairy farmers deal with the new long term cyclical and volatile nature of global dairy markets,” he concluded.
Minister Must Remove Pre-Movement Test Following Northern Ireland Approval For Brucellosis-Free Status
IFA’s Animal Health Chairman Bert Stewart said confirmation that Northern Ireland has achieved Brucellosis-free status from the EU Commission provides the basis for the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney to remove the premovement test from animals over 24 months of age. He said this announcement
means the island of Ireland is now recognised officially as free from Brucellosis. Bert Stewart said he expects the Minister to move quickly on this based on the commitments given to IFA earlier this year. “Brucellosis has imposed severe costs and hardship on individual farmers and the Minister must now remove the last direct cost
burden on farmers as soon as possible.” Bert Stewart said the discontinuation of the premovement test for breeding animals over 24 months of age will represent the removal of the last farmer testing requirement for brucellosis. When combined with the cessation of herd testing, this
will be worth €6m in savings annually to farmers. Furthermore, he said the discontinuation of this test allows farmers to consider mart sales for female beef animals without the prohibitive costs previously associated with their sale. This will provide a viable alternative outlet and improve competition.
Now Up To Minister Coveney To Deliver On Payments Farm Business & Credit, Farm Family, Farm Schemes, Rural Development IFA President Eddie Downey has said that following the EU Council of Agriculture Ministers’ decision to allow an advance payment of 70% of the Basic Payment and Greening on 16th October next, it is now up to the Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney to ensure that this is
delivered in full to farmers. Eddie Downey said with severe income difficulties across all sectors, the earlier payment of 70% advance, compared to 50%, is welcome. Farmers now expect payments to be made in line with the deadlines set down in the new Charter of Rights. The IFA President also
said the first payment due to farmers for the 2015 schemes is the Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC), which is due to be paid in the week beginning 21st September. Following on from the EU Council meeting, it should also be possible to pay agrienvironment scheme
payments such as AEOS in October, once the eligibility checks have been completed. Eddie Downey said that Direct Payments, which are worth around €1.65bn to farmers in 2015 are a vital income lifeline to most farmers. Timely payments must be the priority for Minister Coveney.

Wider Reform Of Food Chain Needed Along With Support Measures For Farmers
Northwest Express October, 2015
Major Job Potential in the Irish Bio-Economy
A
I
n a clear warning to the EU Commission and the Farm Council in advance of a major protest by farmers in Brussels tomorrow (Mon), IFA President Eddie Downey said the food chain is broken, with below-cost selling by retailers and input cartels squeezing the viability from productive farm businesses, which are already under severe pressure from depressed and volatile commodity markets. He said, “It is critically important that Ministers step up at tomorrow’s meeting with a strong declaration that Europe will ban below-cost selling of food and address the excessive
input costs imposed on farmers. It is vital that Farm Ministers take action to ensure the EU Single Market is working properly”. The IFA President said input providers will have to reduce their costs and take their share of the pain in helping farmers through this income crisis, and the Commission and Farm Council should insist on this. Eddie Downey said the EU Commission must use the fund of over €800m in surperlevy fines to support dairy farmers through this crisis, which has been largely created by political interference in the markets and the Russian ban. He said it is
unacceptable that European farmers are expected to carry the cost of the consequences of political decisions. “Export refunds for pigmeat and a re-opening of the Russian market are needed to address the loss-making situation for pig farmers. Grain farmers across Europe are experiencing their third successive year of prices below the cost of production. The political establishment needs to wake up. Their failure to rein in speculative investment in agricultural commodities and tackle fertiliser price cartels is compounding the situation. Farm families cannot ride out
the boom/bust cycles resulting from speculative investment.” Mr Downey said the 70% proposed advance on the Basic Payment demanded by IFA will be a boost for cashflow on income-strapped farms. He said normally farmers get a 50% advance on their payments on 16th October, but because of the income crisis situation, the Commission is proposing to increase this to 70%. “The Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney has to ensure the 70% advance includes the Basic and Greening payments, and that all other EU payments are made on time.” The remaining 30% will be due on 1st December.
Teagasc to Announce Farm Safety Training Schedule Teagasc plan to hold a series of Half-Day Farm Safety Code of Practice Training Courses over the winter months. Details of the Safety training courses will be published in a brochure which will be available for farmers at the National Ploughing Championships. It’s just one of the things to be highlighted at the Teagasc and the H.S.A. Farm Safety Village (stand 279) at the upcoming
National Ploughing Championships in County Laois. Teagasc health and safety officer, John McNamara said that a Teagasc study had shown the farmers who completed Half-day safety training found the course highly motivating. Those who attend training identified 40% more controls for implementation. Also, the majority of farmers implement the controls they specified,
and had a higher level of farms with satisfactory occupational health and safety standards. John McNamara reminded farmers that safety training is now mandatory under the recently announced TAMS 2 schemes. To obtain payment under these schemes farmers must have completed the Halfday Farm Safety course or the ‘Green Cert’ within the previous 5 years.
He also called for continuing high farm safety vigilance, as the winter approaches and light fades, to cut the toll of farm deaths and serious injury. He stated that 11 farm deaths occurred in the last 4 months of 2014. So far in 2015, fatal farm accident levels are 40% lower than 2014, but that one accident is one too many. Sixty per cent of deaths in 2014 were associated with getting struck or crushed by a farm vehicle or machines, mainly in, or around the farmyard. Other major causes of accidents include livestock attacks, collapsing objects such as bales, and slurry incidents, including drowning and gassing. To seek further information on Teagasc Training Courses, contact any Teagasc office or see the website at www.teagasc.ie
new report on the Economic Impact of the Irish Bio-Economy was launched in Dublin this month. Speaking at the launch, Professor Cathal O’Donoghue, Teagasc Head of Rural Economy and Development Programme, highlighted the strong local linkages between the Irish BioEconomy, which incorporates the Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Marine sectors. He commented that; “Due to the fact that bio-economic sectors locate much of their inputs in Ireland, and because they employ relatively more people per unit of output, when these sectors increase their sales and in particular their exports, they generate a greater impact on the economy.” “Of the 162,000 jobs in the bio-economy in 2010, there were an additional 45,000 jobs elsewhere in the value chain. As much of the bio-economy is located in rural areas, this impact can have a particularly strong effect on rural job creation.” The analysis utilises the Bio-economy Input Output model (BIO), which studies the linkages between the Bio-Economy sectors and the wider economy. This model has been developed to assess the output and employment multipliers of public policy initiatives. It was developed by the SocioEconomic Marine Research Unit (SEMRU) of NUI Galway and the Rural Economy and Development Programme of Teagasc, in association with the Marine Institute, under Beaufort Award and Teagasc funding. It builds upon the Central Statistics Office’s national more aggregated Input-Output table and previous work by Professor Alan Matthews of Trinity College. Professor Gerry Boyle Director of Teagasc, welcomed the outcome of this joint initiative between Teagasc and NUI Galway, where the resources of both institutions, together with the Marine Institute were brought together to create a powerful Analytical Infrastructure to assess the impact of public policy and economic change. The model was used recently to support strategic planning in the recent Food Wise 2025 strategy for the Agri-Food Sector. The strategy targets the creation of an additional 23,000 direct and indirect jobs in the agri-food sector all along the supply chain from primary production to high value added product development. Dr Amaya Vega of SEMRU in NUI Galway emphasises high multipliers in many of these sectors. These are sectors with highest impact on the rest of the economy. Of the 99 sectors in the model, 8 of the top 15, and 3 of the top 5 multipliers are from the bio-economy sector, with shipping and marine transport having the highest multiplier, with forestry products and cattle farming also being in the top five multipliers. Dr Peter Heffernan, CEO of the Marine Institute emphasised the importance of analytical infrastructure in supporting the ambitious targets within the Harnessing our Ocean Wealth. Economic analysis is critical in decision making in relation to the Atlantic Action Plan that can enable Blue Growth, doubling the size of our Ocean Economy to 2020.

Grant Funding Secured For Poultry Investments Under Tams II
A strong campaign by the IFA over the last year has paid off for poultry farmers with a new specialised investment scheme offering 40% funding for investment on poultry farms. IFA Poultry
Chairman Nigel Renaghan said the IFA Poultry Committee made strong representations at all levels on the need for investment at farm level to maintain the highest standards that processors and Bord Bia rightly
insist upon. As a result, poultry has been included in the TAMS Scheme for the first time, allowing farmers to avail of 40% grant aid on a number of on-farm investments. IFA
representation also ensured that poultry was included in the Young Farmers Capital Investment Scheme, which opened in June and offers a higher rate of grant aid of 60%. Nigel Renaghan welcomed the

Teagasc Safety Survey Findings 2.000 injuries occur on Irish farms each year - 75 per cent of all accidents are associated with: Tractors and machinery, Trips and falls & Livestock. Ireland has over twice the incidence of farm accidents as other European countries.
Public Safety Ensure that there is good visibility at access points onto public roadways. Ensure that livestock fencing and gateways along public roadways are stock-proof. Ensure that public roadways are kept free of hazards. Place warning signs on the road margins when farm activity is in progress. Vehicles and equipment should comply with the Road Traffic Acts. Prepare a Safety Statement The Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act requires that a safety statement be prepared for all workplaces, including farms. This is a plan to manage safety on your farm. A format for preparing a safety statement is available from Teagasc or the Health and Safety Authority. Accidents are preventable Most accidents are preventable if practical safety measures are taken - examine your farm, identify the hazards and take control measures. Discuss safety with your family, persons who work on your farm, contractors and visitors and ensure that safe standards and practices are used. Think Safety and Take Action Tractors, Machinery, Workshop Equipment Ensure that all machinery and equipment is in safe working order. Consult the operator’s manual. Keep all safety guards in place. Make sure that all operators are competent and work in a safe manner. Always turn off the PTO and stop the engine before attempting to free a blockage. Watch out for bystanders.
Fit sliding doors or ensure that doors can be secured. Heavy swinging doors or gates are highly dangerous, especially in windy conditions.
Ensure that the sprayer is in safe working order. Operators should receive training. Consult the Teagasc Code of Practice for further information.
Children Look out for and eliminate particular hazards to children on your farm. Provide a safe and secure play area for young children. Supervise young people working on your farm. A young person must be 14 years old to operate a tractor on the farm and over 16 years of age to do so on public roads. Read the Health and Safety Authority guidelines on child safety on farms.
Your Health Wear protective equipment where the situation requires it: goggles, gloves, veterinary gloves, ear defenders, a facemask or respirator. Atmospheres with mould, dust or fumes are injurious to health. Where these arise, ventilate the
Slurry Ensure that all slurry and effluent tanks are fenced or covered. Only agitate and move slurry when there is a lot of air movement. Pick a windy day. Evacuate all people and stock from sheds. Open all doors and outlets. Adding silage effluent to slurry greatly increases the level of poisonous hydrogen sulphide gas produced. Lifting and Carrying Prevent back injuries by using mechanical methods of lifting, e.g. loaders, hydraulic jacks, trolleys, wheels under heavy farmyard gates. Before lifting - assess the load. Use the correct technique by having a well-balanced stance, bend your knees, keep your back straight and keep the load close to your body. Ensure that heavy weights are well secured and that proper stacking takes place.
Livestock All animals can be dangerous. Keep the temperament of animals, especially bulls, under constant review. Ensure that children, in particular, are safe when cattle are being herded. Bulls should have a ring and trailing chain attached. Where a bull is present, place a warning sign at field entrances with public access. Check that your livestock handling, housing and loading facilities are safe and easy to use.CTORS,
Electrical Installations Have a competent electrician examine the electrical installations on your farm and upgrade if necessary. Be familiar with the standards of electrical installation. Read the ESB leaflet “Farm Well, Farm Safely”. Ensure that all plugs are correctly wired and that cables are sound. Only use waterproof fittings in damp locations. All sockets should be protected by a 30 milliAmp Residual Current Device (R.C.D.). Lookout for overhead cables and observe safe clearance distances.
Trips, Falls and Blows Keep all walkways and work areas free of tripping hazards. Rushing is the cause of many accidents - work at a steady pace. When gaining access to heights, use a sound and properly secured ladder. Never walk on a fragile roof, use adequately supported crawler boards or roofing ladders. Ensure that lofts and stairways are sound and have adequate guardrails fitted.
Pesticides Store all pesticides and farm chemicals in a secure, bunded store, made of non-flammable material. Identify the store with the correct safety warning sign. The store should be isolated from flammable materials such as hay or straw. Wear suitable protective equipment - wellingtons, coverall, pesticide gloves, a face shield and where necessary a respirator.
area thoroughly. A facemask (EN 149 Type P2) gives a high level of protection against dust and spores. Adopt high standards of hygiene and cover all cuts and wounds with waterproof plasters. Keep a first aid box and attend a first aid course. Farm Fires Ensure that combustible materials such as hay, straw, fuel/oils are separated from livestock buildings and dwelling houses. Hay/straw should be stored 18 metres or more
from other buildings. To allow access for a fire brigade, entrances and gates should be at least 3.0 metres wide. A fire brigade may have only 2,000 litres (400 gallons) of water aboard. Check that a farm water supply is available to fight a fire. Ensure that all emergency phone numbers are in view at the phone. Have suitable fire extinguishers on the farm and in the home. Additionally, smoke alarms and a fire blanket should be fitted in the home.

Choosing one of the best farm sheds takes time H
ave you ever visited a farm? If you have, then you must have noticed the numerous building like structures all around the farm land. Some are used to house farm animals, whereas, some are used to store food items and tractors. These constructions
are better known as farm sheds. There was a time, when such big structures were built over a time span of several weeks or months. However, these days you will find sheds which are custom made. All you need to do is provide the exact measurements of your free
space and let the dealer design it for you. Once it is done, the dealer will ship you the product with a complete building manual. Read the manual and build it on your own. This entire process will barely take you more than a couple of weeks. If you search through newspapers or on the internet, you will find several companies, which mention advertisement for farm sheds for sale. There are many dealers, who provide such custom made sheds. However, when you place an order, you have to keep certain factors in mind. Failing may prove to be a loss for you. Some of these factors are discussed below. The use of the shed If you have your own farm, then you should know that the sheds are used for different purposes. If you are planning to place an order for one of the best farm sheds, you have to determine the actual use of the structure. Whether you are planning to use it to store your vehicles or your farm
Farmers – how to reduce your october 2015 income tax payments BY Claire Walsh, Branch Manager, IFAC Sligo
P
rofits from most Irish farm enterprises will be significantly less in 2015 than in 2014 while farmers still have to meet increasing ongoing day to day farm costs, bank repayments and personal living costs. This will impact on cash availability, therefore minimising your 2015 tax payments is vital. Farmers have options in reducing their 2015 tax payments Farmers can reduce their cash outflow on Income Tax payments due in October/November provided they are properly advised on the options available to them. There are three available options in arriving at the minimum 2015 tax payment which will avoid interest charges and they are; • 90% of what the eventual 2015 Income Tax bill will be. • 100% of the 2014 tax bill. • 105% of the 2013 tax bill provided tax is paid by direct debit instalments. In most cases 90% of the tax that will eventually be due for 2015 will be the most advantageous option but as we are only just over half way through 2015 this figure has to be estimated. It is therefore vital for you to meet
with your accountant now in order to plan and project your eventual 2015 farm income and therefore your eventual tax payment. Issues to be addressed now to reduce your October tax payment As outlined above it is vital to meet with your accountant now in order to shape your 2015 tax bill. For cash strapped farmers the option of additional capital expenditure and hefty pension payments in order to minimise tax should be the last resort. Within IFAC Accountants we strive to maximise the amount of cash retained within the farming enterprise. Examples of some options we consider in the preyear-end tax planning service are as follows; • If not availing of farm income averaging, would opting for it bring benefits to you in 2015? • For farmers availing of income averaging, if profits are falling, would opting off averaging be beneficial? • What level of stock at the yearend will maximise entitlement to Stock Relief – • Would it be wasted in 2015 and better maximised in 2016? • If, due to losses or low income, you’re not likely to absorb your personal Income Tax credits could profits be increased in the current year? E.G: • Postpone expenditure to next year e.g. repairs, fertiliser etc. • Postpone capital expenditure to
the following year. • For farmers with a taxable income, would any of the following commercial decisions convert income which would otherwise be taxable at the top Income Tax rate/standard rate to a lower rate or zero? • Bring forward expenditure e.g. repairs, fertiliser etc. • If commercially advisable defer sales until after the year end. • Bring forward expenditure and capital work to the current year. Can Income Tax exemption on long leases of farmland be used to convert existing taxable leasing income into tax exempt income? These are but a few of the options open to a farmer in determining their 2015 Income Tax bill. Does the 2015 profit projection take a long time? No, within IFAC Accountants we have, as part of our normal service, mobile book keepers calling to the farm during the year to record the business transactions on computer. Because this information is available on an up to date basis the full year picture can be projected quickly and accurately thereby enabling the farmer to determine their Income Tax and allowances and therefore their tax bill. Be prepared – take action now before the tax horse has bolted and control your October tax bill.
products or any other product, you have to choose accordingly. Once you are clear about your needs, you will be in a better position to place an order for a good quality shed. Your budget Different dealers will quote you different rates for farm sheds for sale. When you decide to purchase a custom made shed for your farm, always plan out a budget. This is especially true if you are on a limited budget. Going ahead and buying a costly shed may not be the right thing to do every time.
The available area Another important factor to keep in mind is the actual size of the available space. Always measure the space, where you are planning to place the shed, before placing the order. If you fail to do so and order one of the farm sheds for sale based upon your rough estimate, it may prove to be a unfavorable bet for you, resulting in monetary loss. These are some of the factors to keep in mind when placing your order for one of the best custom made farm sheds. Always take your time and then go ahead with your search.
7 ways to save electricity money on dairy farms
T
he electricity bill can often add up to a substantial amount on dairy farms. Research from Teagasc has shown that electricity usage contributes on average, 0.60c/L to milk production costs. In terms of electricity consumption per dairy cow milked, the figures vary from 4 kWh/cow/week to 7.3 kWh/cow/week. This is equivalent to €0.60/cow/week to €1.10/cow/week. Leaky taps A leak as small as 1L/hour can waste 8,500 litres of hot water and 3,800 Kwh per year. Identifying and elimination of leaks can be done with minimal effort, simply repaired at minimal costs and offer real energy savings. Repair any leaky taps promptly! Water heaters sacrificial anode While many not know what the water heater sacrificial anode is, it’s the single most important factor in whether a water heater lives of dies! It’s life span depends on the quality of water, the amount of use it gets, water temperature and the condition of the tank. Examine the condition of the water heaters sacrificial anode and replace if necessary. Standby heat loss Reduce standby heat loss. Standby
heat loss occurs in storage tanks and piping and can be reduced with additional insulation to storage tanks if appropriate and insulation of all hot water piping, and cold water piping within three to five feet of water heater. Natural light Maximise natural ventilation and light in your winter sheds wherever possible. This will help reduce the need for artificial light and can help keep bugs and infections at bay. Cooling condenser Make sure that the milk cooling condenser operates at the lowest achievable temperature (e.g. that it is cooled by fresh air of the coolest possible temperature and that it is clean, so that an unobstructed air flow is established). Vacuum pump motor Make sure the vacuum pump motor is kept clean and well ventilated, it can save you a lot over the course of a year. Dust It may sound silly, but dusting around the milking parlour could save you money! Dust and dirt accumulation on lamps and luminary refractors will significantly reduce the effective light, which in turn increases the need for more lighting.

ohn Deere has at last released full details of its 9RX fourtrack crawler that will go head-to-head with Case-IH’s mighty Quadtrac and Versatile’s recently introduced Delta Track. So far the new models have only been officially revealed to US punters, but a proper European launch is scheduled to take place
at the Agritechnica show in Hanover this November. A couple of test machines are likely to make their way on to UK farms towards the end of the year, or early 2016, and we expect to see full production models the following autumn. When they do arrive, there will be a total of four models, ranging
from 470hp to 620hp. The two smaller tractors will be powered Deere’s own 13.5-litre Cummins block and there will be a 15-litre Cummins in the big machines. Here’s a quick run through the main features: Tracks The track units are clearly the big talking point of the 9RX. According

Engine and transmission It is no surprise that the 9RX’s engines mirror those of the existing 9R and 9RT machines. That means smaller 9470RX and 9520RX models will be fitted with Deere’s own 13.5-litre engine and the bigger 9570RX and 9620RX get the 15-litre Cummins block. These both meet Tier 4 final emissions regs. Across the range, power will be handled by the maker’s 18-speed, e18 powershift transmission. This has an auto-shifting mode that shifts up and throttles back to save fuel and does the opposite when the going gets tough. It also has a custom auto mode

to Deere they are a completely new design and each has a massive upswept gear off the axle that powers the drive wheel. This sits in a large casting that’s apparently the largest poured in the US. The drive wheel uses a positive drive system that engages with lugs in the centre of the track units and there are two mid rollers, unlike the Quadtrac’s three. Deere’s theory is that this reduces vibration and makes the tracks smoother on the road. To improve climbing ability, the front idler wheel is mounted slightly higher so it tends to ride up over obstacles rather than bash into them head on.

where drivers set their own shifting preferences, as well as a manual option for those that like to stay in fully control of revs and gear ratios. Hydraulics In standard spec, 9RX tractors will come with a 220-litre/min hydraulic pump, but there is an option to up this to a 435-litre/min version. These high-flow tractors will have a split hydraulic system with two separate circuits. Systems that required high flow and low pressure – such as drill fans – can be connected to one circuit, while higher-pressure ones such as implement lift can be plumbed into the other, more powerful, one. Deere says this allows the hydraulic system to run cooler as it prevents both hydraulic pumps from running at high pressure. For those who don’t want to just drag implements around, there is also the option of a 9t three-point linkage and 1,000rpm pto. Cab The cab will be pretty familiar to existing 9R drivers, with the same 4600 Command Center screen and armrest. However, the cab suspension has been tweaked and adjusts automatically according to ground conditions.

focus on farming Choosing livestock for your smallholding observation and from conversation with their owner. If you permit them to lamb, calve or kid in your outbuildings, you’ll experience normal and problem birthing as well. This is how Rosie and I learned about sheep management before starting our own flock. Spend time on the source farm of your potential livestock to gain familiarity with them and ask questions of the vendor. Most breeders are enthusiastic about their animals and it’s not in their interest to sell stock to someone who is unsuited to keeping them, so they may want to question you in turn!
What livestock should you choose for your smallholding? Alan Beat has many years experience with animals. Here is his advice New entrants to smallholding often ask ‘which breed of hens/ducks/sheep/pigs/cattle should we buy?’ Unfortunately, there is no simple answer. It depends on many different factors, not least of which is personal preference. However, I suggest that some commonsense principles can be applied to all types of livestock: • Buy healthy stock from a reliable small-scale source; • Keep them as naturally as possible; • Rotate them regularly to fresh ground; • Avoid overstocking; • Feed and house them properly; • Learn their normal behaviour through regular observation. Do these simple things and you should have very few problems. This article examines the first of these principles in more detail. Preparation Please, please don’t even think about buying your first livestock until you have made adequate preparations. Ensure that field boundaries are stockproof; that sufficient grazing or fodder is available; that appropriate housing and handling facilities are in place and that you have a fair grasp of how to look after them. Don’t fall into the trap of buying on impulse at a show or sale and think that you can rig something up with baler twine and old pallets ‘just for the time being’ when you get home. Such temporary arrangements are never satisfactory and risk
becoming rather more permanent than intended! It’s far better to plan and prepare in advance. Personal preference There are many different reasons for keeping livestock, but perhaps the most important is that you take pleasure in doing so. You’ll be spending a part of every single day in their company, and if that becomes a chore rather than a pleasure, you are not going to succeed with them - it’s as simple as that. So try to acquire some hands-on experience to inform your choice. Consider enrolling for a short training course covering the livestock that interest you, or offers a general overview to help you focus.Visit established smallholders to learn from their experience, and offer to help with routine tasks that enable contact with the type of stock that interest you. Handling large livestock can be daunting and may not suit you personally. Keeping geese may seem attractive, but will you cope with an aggressive gander? Milking goats may appeal, but have you ever tried - and can you stand the smell of a billy? It’s much better to explore such things before you buy, rather than afterwards. A good route to practical experience is through WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms), which enables you to work on smallholdings and farms in exchange for board and lodging; visit www.wwoof.org Another option is to initially let out your grazing to a local smallholder or farmer with the type of stock that interests you. Useful knowledge and confidence is acquired through regular
Pedigree Beginners are often advised to buy quality pedigree stock from a reputable prize-winning breeder. Such breeders play a vital role in maintaining and developing the wide range of livestock breeds that we enjoy today. The rare breeds, in particular, are often suited to a smallholding life and are especially deserving of our support. However, I strongly suggest that pedigree livestock are not the ideal first purchase for the raw novice.Pedigree strains have been selectively bred over many generations for certain characteristics. The promotion of specific attributes usually comes at the expense of others, and impacts on general qualities such as hardiness, prolificacy and longevity. As breeds diverge further from the natural form, there is an associated increase in dependence
on human care and intervention to maintain health and well-being. To give a simple example, primitive sheep shed their fleece naturally each spring, whereas the more developed breeds require shearing. To establish the reputation of his or her pedigree stock, the breeder needs to show them and to win prizes; but showing promotes physique and visual appeal over utility attributes, so that prize-winning stock may lack the practical characteristics that most interest the smallholder. To win consistently around the shows against stiff competition requires considerable effort and commitment alongside expert stockmanship. All this indicates that trying to keep and breed pedigree stock is
not for the fainthearted; nor, I suggest, is it for the novice. Instead of starting at the top end of the scale, I think the novice is better advised to first gain practical experience with crossbred or commercial stock that are cheaper, hardier and more widely available. When two pure breeds are crossed, the resulting progeny grow faster to a larger ultimate size than either parent; they are also usually healthier, hardier and more prolific breeders. These characteristics are collectively known as ‘hybrid vigour’. Commercial farming takes advantage of this in various ways, for example, using crossbred ewes to combine the prolificacy of one breed with the heavier lamb carcase of another.

REPS Income Finished? Unsure about GLAS? – Earn up to €257/acre If your REPS payment has finished why not consider forestry income. Western Forestry is a Co-op based in the North West that has been serving farmers for 30 years. Landowners can receive their full Basic Farm Payment (BPS) and forestry premium on the same land. Forest premiums range from €206/acre for conifer rate to €257/acre for native broadleaf, all premiums are payable for 15yrs and are income tax free. This is beneficial for retired & part-time farmers, people exiting REPS, inherited land, private landowners working full time who all qualify for the high premium. The forestry scheme also includes an establishment grant so it costs you nothing. Forestry & GLAS Farmers should know their options before committing to GLAS. The GLAS scheme is not a wholefarm scheme. Landowners choose different options, some of which are area based. Land parcels put in to GLAS cannot be converted to forestry and will be in GLAS for 6 years. Landowners should contact the co-op to look at the opportunities afforded by both schemes before committing to GLAS. This service is free of charge. Selling Land for Forestry If you are thinking of selling their land, consider the cost/benefit of your decision – for example to sell 20 acres of marginal land @ €4,000/acre would be €80,000 before capital gains tax and solicitor fees are deducted. If you planted these 20 acres you would receive €61,800 in forest premium over 15 years and still own the land and the trees and receive your full Basic Payment. Landowners should talk to the co-op before selling land to make an informed decision. If you are considering forestry then please contact your local Co-op forester (please see advert on this page) or call Head Office on 071-9161458 for more information and a free visit.

From trials supported by international nutritionists, he developed a formula of feed that enhances performance and improves animal health and welfare.

October at Ballina Arts Centre instant, started to become the search for this inner reality. Especially as her husband began battling cancer, and so the work began to look beyond the rosetinted perfection which family albums so like to preserve and started to bring to the fore the unspoken. Because most often it is not what is said that makes us who we are but what remains unspoken. Sadly, Sabine’s husband, Tim lost his battle in November of last year. Exhibition continues until the end of October. Admission Free
Twenty Ten Artists Group present Five Years On Ballina Arts Centre is delighted to host Five Years On, an exhibition of work by the Twenty Ten Artists Group. The exhibition opened on Thursday 10th September at 7pm, and includes work by Pat Donald, Eileen Fitzgerald, Mary Gillivan, Mary Hession, Mary Patterson, Irma Van Baalen and Angela Walsh. The individual practises are distinct and varied, even though they graduated together from GMIT Castlebar with a BA in Art
and Design in 2010. Five Years On runs until 31st October. Admission is free. Sabine Lacey’s Unspoken The official opening of Unspoken will be at Ballina Arts Centre on Friday, 11th September, at 8pm. Recently, this local artist’s mother-in-law died leaving her husband an orphan with no brothers or sisters. When sorting through her belongings, Sabine realized that she was not just discarding her belongings but her

However, gradually she realized that the photographs as a vehicle of memory resist inner reality. More and more the paintings based on these photographs, other than just being a document of an
Vernon God Little Ballina Arts Centre is delighted to welcome Decadent Theatre Company to its stage on Friday, 9th October, at 8pm. Master Vernon Little lives in a flea-bitten town, “the barbeque sauce capital of the state of Central Texas”, where unfortunately his best friend has massacred sixteen of their classmates. The town wants vengeance and turns its sights on the innocent Vernon who is under arrest from the start of the story. As the saying goes – “when the going gets tough, the tough get going” – Vernon escapes custody and flees to Mexico pursued by a media circus of outlandish proportions. Vernon God Little is a riotous, irreverent adventure with a fast-talking teenager who cruelly ends up on a warped version of death row driven by the rules of reality TV. However, desperate times throw up the most unlikely of heroes, and, since he’s a boy of such sweetness, Vernon makes death row a respectable address. His innate innocence exposes the nature of the American justice in the eye of a media storm. The show is distinguished by a talented and charismatic cast and is bolstered, too, by the presence of a wonderful three-piece band — The Lifebuoys — who play a set of
pining country standards throughout, evoking the Texan scrub town in which the story takes place. Tickets €18 /€16. Booking advised.
Playboy of the Western World The critically acclaimed Blue Raincoat Theatre Company bring their production of Ireland’s most famous play in history, Playboy of the Western World, to Ballina Arts Centre on Tuesday, 13th and Wednesday 14th October. Set on the west coast of Ireland, Christy Mahon is first celebrated and then reviled for patricide. The Playboy of the Western World is JM Synge’s most famous and controversial play set on the West Coast of Ireland, it is a tale of heroism and revulsion in a small community. This production features the same cast as the original production at The Factory Performance Space last Autumn, with Bob Kelly in the role of Christy Mahon, Fiona McGeown as the Widow Quinn, Sandra O’Malley as Pegeen Mike and John Carty as Shawn Keogh. ‘A fascinating production.’ Peter Crawley, Irish Times. Tickets €18 /€16. Booking advised. Adrian Knight Ballina Arts Centre welcomes Adrian Knight, one of the top elite stage hypnotists around today, to it’s stage on Friday 16th October, at 8pm. Arguably the most talented in his profession, he is truly a unique force in the world of hypnosis and one of the most sought after global entertainers around today. Tickets: €15. Booking essential. Ballina Arts Centre is open from 10am – 6pm Monday to Saturday. For further information on all events, contact Ballina Arts Centre, Barrett St., Ballina, Co. Mayo. COMEDY: NEPHIN THEATRE GROUP Nephin Theatre Group brings “Flight FR254”, a new comedy by Martin Donohoe, to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday 7th October at 8.00pm. “Flight FR254” welcomes you to the Arrivals hall of an Irish airport late in the evening, two days before Christmas. The patrons are awaiting various passengers from the titular flight, and their stories and situations guarantee an entertaining night with laughs aplenty. Written and directed by Martin Donohoe, and packed with many lovable characters, “Flight FR254” boasts a strong cast of eleven actors with a wealth of experience on the amateur scene. Nephin Theatre Group is an exciting initiative established in 2014 and comprises members from different drama groups in North Mayo who come together to produce original plays. Based in Ballina Arts Centre, Nephin Theatre Group’s first play was Over the Ocean, also written and directed by Martin Donohoe, his second play following on from “Waiting for God Only Knows What”, which was produced in 2013. A fun night on the cards, fasten your seatbelts... Nephin Theatre Group presents “Flight FR254” at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Wednesday 7th October at 8.00pm. Booking advised. Tel: 094 9023733 and online booking at www.thelinenhall.com The Linenhall Arts Centre acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council in making this performance possible. “BASSAM”: POWERFUL DRAMA Powerful and affirming, “Bassam” is a one-man show based on the
true story of Bassam Aramin, a Palestinian peace activist whose daughter was killed by a border soldier in 2007. You can see this exceptional piece of theatre at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday 15th October at 8.00pm. From the age of fifteen, Bassam Aramin spent seven years in an Israeli prison for attacking Israeli soldiers during the first Palestinian uprising in 1987. In 2005 he co-founded the IsraeliPalestine peace movement, Combatants for Peace (CFP). Written and directed by Idan Meir, a former Israeli soldier, and performed by Fadl Mustapha, “Bassam” is about one man’s journey from violence to nonviolence and explores the broader moral themes of forgiveness and hope, demonstrating parallels with issues of conflict resolution in Ireland. At the core of the story, the play asks of its audience: what motivates people to say no to violence and choose the road to peace? Suitable for ages 14yrs+. Performance (duration approx. 50 mins) followed by a post-show discussion facilitated by Idan Meir. “Unique, truthful... exceptional.” - HaBama (The Stage, Israel) “Bassam” takes place at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Thursday 15th October at 8.00pm.Booking advised. Tel: 094 9023733 and online booking at www.thelinenhall.com The Linenhall Arts Centre acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council in making this performance possible. VANBRUGH QUARTET For a real Classical treat, look no further than the Vanbrugh Quartet, with an appropriately autumnal programme titled “Harvest” at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday 21st October at 8.00pm. Comprising Gregory Ellis (violin), Keith Pascoe (violin), Simon Aspell (viola) and Christopher Marwood (cello), the Vanbrugh Quartet is one of Europe’s most successful quartets, internationally recognised for its beauty of sound, clarity of texture and integrity of interpretation within an unusually wide and varied range of repertoire. In 1986 it became RTÉ’s resident string quartet and won the London International String Quartet Competition in 1988. Familiar visitors to all the main UK festivals, the Vanbrugh Quartet also broadcasts frequently for BBC Radio 3 and performs regularly at London’s Wigmore Hall and South Bank. The Quartet enjoys a thriving international career, performing at top venues throughout Europe and the USA, as well as boasting an impressive catalogue of exemplary recordings. Concert Programme: Mozart K.387 in G major; Shostakovich String Quartet No.8 in C minor; Tchaikovsky String Quartet No.3 in Eb minor. ROOLABOOLA – JUST AROUND THE CORNER! This year’s RoolaBoola Children’s Arts Festival takes place at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar from Friday 23rd - Friday 30th October, over the Bank Holiday Weekend and through the following week. As usual, this year’s RoolaBoola features the very best theatre shows, film, workshops, free drop-in events, readings, exhibitions and more, for children aged 2 to 12 years. And it’s going to be fun, fun, fun! But be warned, shows and workshops are beginning to sell out, so book now! Shows over the weekend include Branar’s beautiful puppet show “Bláth”, a madcap journey in “Shh! We have a Plan” and a very special screening of Cartoon Saloon’s new, Academy Awardnominated animated film “Song of the Sea”. Plus (of course!) a whole lot of arts workshops, including circus skills, global music and themed workshops inspired by the shows, drop-ins, readings and the CBI’s Book Clinic for reading advice, and a brilliant exhibition based on “Song of the Sea”. Plus, for the half-term break that’s in it, the following week (Wednesday 28th – Friday 30th October) there’s daily animated films including Disney classic “Pinocchio” and a screening of episodes of RTE favourite “Puffin Rock” for little
ones. A full listing of all shows, workshops and everything else is available at the Linenhall (info/booking: 094 9023733), and also on www.thelinenhall.com (where you can also book online!), where you’ll also find a downloadable version of the RoolaBoola festival brochure. RoolaBoola: so much to enjoy in one festival. See you there! JAZZ AT THE LINENHALL Freshen up your Jazz life with GoGo Penguin, performing at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday 29th October at 8.00pm as part of a Music Network tour. Packing the dance floors with an infectious combination of frenetic break-beats, irresistible piano melodies and subtle electronica, GoGo Penguin first came to prominence after their album v2.0 was named a Mercury Prize 2014 Album of the Year. Rising stars on the UK Jazz scene, this Mancunian piano trio is equally at home
playing to clubbers and dyed-inthe-wool jazz fans, drawing on a range of influences from Aphex Twin and dubstep to The Bad Plus, Brian Eno, John Cage, Massive Attack and Debussy. Their highly personalised, genre-free sound comes from the interplay between the three musicians: Chris Illingworth’s flowing bebopinspired piano riding over Nick Blacka’s pulsing bass lines and Rob Turner’s skittering drum grooves. With a three album deal with Blue Note Records under their belt, and a recent nomination for best UK act in the Jazz FM Awards, this is a band GoGo Penguin performs at the Linenhall Arts Centre on Thursday 29th October at 8.00pm. Booking advised. Tel: 094 9023733 and online booking at www.thelinenhall.com The Linenhall Arts Centre acknowledges the financial support of the Arts Council in making this performance possible.

THE RICE DEBATE
M
ore than half the world’s population relies on rice as a staple food. In Ireland, we eat twice as much as we did 25 years ago. Rice attracts us because it’s gluten-free and low in fat. And after the world’s longest-living people were identified in Okinawa, a poor island community of Japan, a white rice-based diet also became erroneously associated with longevity. The truth is rice may not be so nice. “White rice is high on the glycemic index, which means it breaks down to sugar in the body at a faster rate than foods less processed that contain more fibre and protein,” says Susan Watson, a registered dietitian with A Little Nutrition in Winnipeg. Several servings a day of white rice have been linked to diabetes and certain cancers. White rice is also low in vitamins, minerals and fibre. It turns out Okinawans ate sweet potato as their main carbohydrate – even more than their traditional brown rice. (They also had other factors like physical labour and genetics going for them.) As the community modernized and began to eat more of the highly processed white rice, its citizens actually become more obese than the rest of Japan, and longevity is no longer remarkable. Brown rice, with the four outer layers of the seed (bran), is higher in fibre, has a lower glycemic index and keeps you full faster. But even brown rice may be more processed than you think. “Many times, people purchase brown rice and it looks good to them, but it may only have the inner layer,” says Herbert Kronzucker, a professor of plant biology at the University of Toronto. Furthermore, brown rice may
contain arsenic, especially that grown on former cotton plantations in the southern U.S., thanks to pesticides that were once used there, as opposed to California rice, which does not have this problem. You can still eat rice, but “portion control is key,” says Watson, who advises no more than a cup per meal. Basmati and jasmine rices are usually lower in the glycemic index and arsenic. Pairing rice with healthy fats and protein, like fatty fish, will slow the sugar release. “Turmeric also tempers the glycemic index,” adds Kronzucker. Darkly coloured varieties, like red and purple rice, are higher in anthocyanins, antioxidant compounds that fight cancer. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology is even working on a rice that is slower to break down into sugars whether it is highly processed white or less processed brown. TOP FOODS TO EASE THE PAIN OF ARTHRITIS … AND THOSE TO AVOID Here are the top foods groups that are anti-inflammatory and can help reduce the pain. The name says it all. ‘Arthro’ means joint. ‘Itis’ means inflammation. Even though arthritis consists of more than 100 different conditions, the common denominator for them all is joint and muscle pain, according to The Arthritis Society. And that pain is often caused by inflammation of the joint lining. But even though there is no cure for arthritis, there are things you can do to ease the pain, including adding foods to your diet that reduce inflammation and limiting the foods that aggravate it. “The first thing people need to
understand is that it’s really important to have a variety of foods to help maintain a healthy body weight,” says a spokesperson for The Arthritis Society. “Carrying extra weight puts an extra load on joints and intensifies arthritis.” Here are some foods groups that are anti-inflammatory and can help reduce the pain: 1) Omega 3s: These are the fatty acids found in some fish and fish oils, flax and canola oils, walnuts and soy products. Think salmon and sardines. The U.S.-based Arthritis Foundation suggests using sardines packed in water to save calories. Here’s their recipe for a sardine spread you can use as an appetizer on crackers or spread on toast for lunch: In a food processor, blend 2 tins of drained sardines, 1 shallot, 1/3 cup parsley, 1 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, 2 tsp. grainy or Dijon mustard, 1 tbsp. lemon juice and 1/4 tsp. salt (optional) until smooth. 2) Anti-oxidants: These include bright-coloured fruits and vegetables, like red and yellow peppers and citrus fruits. Tomatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, cranberries, blueberries and blackberries are also great sources. Broccoli is another source and by way of a bonus, a top diseasefighting foods. In addition to having anti-oxidant properties it has more vitamin C than an orange. Next time you’re barbecuing why not throw some broccoli on the grill too. Here’s the Arthritis Foundation’s recipe: Slice a fresh broccoli head into large florets, toss with olive oil and season lightly with salt. Grill over medium heat for 3 to 5 minutes per side or until

2) High-fat dairy products: Things like butter and the high-fat cream you put in your coffee or iced cappuccino also contribute to inflammation. The thing is, a diet that supports arthritis needs to be a combination of adding and taking out and one who promotes moderation and balance. Let’s say you want to have bacon and eggs for breakfast one day. That’s okay, but have your multi-grain toast with it too.
tender and slightly charred. Garnish with parmesan cheese. 3) Fibre: “A high-fibre diet helps keep our immune system functioning and reduces the inflammatory effects,” says Piotrowski. Good sources of fibre include whole grains, fruits and vegetables. “If people are missing anything in their diet it’s usually fruits and vegetables,” she says. “And right now we’re in peak season for everything local, so there’s no real excuse not to have enough fibre in our diets.” Piotrowski emphasizes that low-glycemic index fibre is best, so stay away from refined foods, like white breads and sugary cereals. Opt for whole grains and whole fruits, rather than fruit juices, which have no fibre but lots of natural sugar. “Those high-glycemic foods end up turning into sugar and they cause our body to produce insulin. And while insulin is what turns food into fuel for our bodies, it’s also a proinflammatory agent. When you add fibre to your diet, it slows down that process.” And here are the food groups to cut back on to keep inflammation in check: 1)Animal fats: That crispy chicken skin or yummy fat on the edge of your grilled steak are all pro-inflammatory, so best to avoid them if you can.
