ITH the country in a political limbo as the various parties /groups posture for positions before the formation of a new government it is good to see some positive indications on the economic and employment front, particularly in Connacht. According to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey released this week by ManpowerGroup Ireland, Irish employers are expecting to increase staffing levels across most industry sectors during the second quarter of 2016. The most interesting finding from a west of Ireland perspective, however, is that regionally employers in Connacht report the strongest hiring intentions of all provinces polled, with an outlook of +9%, up nine percentage points on the same period last year. This compares with +7% in Munster and +6% in Leinster. Overall, the net employment outlook for Q2 of 2016 is +5%. Speaking to North West Express this week, Cara O’Leary said the survey is conducted by interviewing a sample of 620 Irish employers, asking them how they anticipate total employment at their location to change in the three months to the end of June 2016, as compared to the current quarter. According to Cara: “The results of the survey show continued employer confidence in 2016. Staffing levels are forecast to grow in 10 of the 11 industry sectors surveyed . . .” The strong predictive figures for Connacht are, undoubtedly boosted by the optimism in the Restaurant and Hotels sector where employers are forecasting the strongest year on year growth out of all the 11 sectors evaluated, up to 28 percentage points on the same period last year, to register an Employment Outlook of +12%. THE ROAD TO DOWNPATRICK A never forgotten visit

Author: Donal McCormick

N

ORTH MAYO is steeped in history, culture, folklore, in addition to beautiful landscape and vegetation, appreciated by locals and visitors alike. A new book to be published shortly by North Mayo man, 87-year-old Donal McCormick, “The Road to Downpatrick – a never forgotten visit”, will prove a valuable guide, particularly for those interested in everything that abounds between Ballina

and the North Mayo coast, including the Ceide Fields. It comprises information accumulated by Donal over a lifetime and when he reached the tender age of 80 some years ago he decided that the knowledge he had acquired about the area he knew and loved so much might be lost for the future; He had so much in his head and decided to put it all on paper. However, having put it together the wealth of information was put in storage until the advent of the Wild Atlantic Way. Then he realised the concept developed for the tourist industry could be complemented by his information; so he decided to make it all available to the public. The route also coincided with the New Greenway planned between Ballina and Killala. Belleek Manor, Bartra Island, the three abbeys (Rosserk, Rathfran and Moyne), Killala’s Round Tower, the history, folklore and landscape all came into focus and this is just as far as Killala. He talks about St. Patrick, The Annals of the Four Masters, the Gobaun Saor, standing stones and megalitc tombs, creating a treasure trove of history, culture and folklore . . . all gleaned from recollection and observation. Donal’s family have lived in the area for generations and are, in fact owners of the

land at Downpatrick Head which encompasses the seastack and the spectacular blowhole (Poll na Seantinne). The book contains lots of photos, to get people interested and, hopefully, stay a few nights in the area. The index is therefore numbered as well as referring to the pages of each of the chapters. With those numbers the geolocations in the chapters can be located by accessing donbriste.com, a site which has been set up by Stuart McCormick and sanctioned by Google as the official site of the area. It contains a video of a drone-flighted view of the stack and head. The launch night for “The Road to Downpatrick – a never forgotten journey” is Saturday, April 2nd, in Lacken Enterprise Centre, Banagher, at 8.00. The book will be launched by local archaeologist, Dr. Seamus A Caulfield, and part of the profits from the publication will go to Bothar, an organisation close to Donal’s heart. The project is being supported by Mayo Co. Council and Leader and will be a valuable addition to existing material promoting Mayo’s extensive Wild Atlantic Way coastline. Read a full interview with Donal McCormick in this month’s issue of Mayo Now.

Good employment outlook for west Continued from front page Referring to Connacht Cara agreed that the tourism sector weighting probably favoured

this region. But she also said there was optimism among the high tech sector in the Galway area. “The Employment Outlook Survey is carried out in

a highly professional manner, through communication with companies in all sectors to ascertain their hiring intentions for the coming quarter”, she

said. So, no matter what shape or hue the new administration will take a wave of optimism could be pervading the country at last.

IT Sligo Surfers Catch Winning Wave

T

he prowess and skill of IT Sligo’s students on the waves was rewarded in Strandhill, Co Sligo when the Institute’s surfing team won the 2016 National Intervarsities Surfing Championships. IT Sligo beat off stiff competition to secure the

overall team title for the second time in the Institute’s history. The event which was streamed live online, was organised by the National Surfing Association (NSA) in conjunction with IT Sligo, and saw 148 competitors from

18 third level institutions take to the water. “Conditions were very challenging for the surfers,” said Jack-Tim Murphy-Malone, one of the event organisers and President of the IT Surfing Club (pictured). “Our surf club had been

working towards this event since the start of the academic year,” said the Recreation & Leisure student, who also runs his own surf school in Curraroe, Co Wexford. “The standard was very high, particularly in the men’s open event - but the atmosphere in the water amongst the competitors was very friendly and showing the event live online helped capture the imagination of the wider surfing community.” Surfers completed in a team event across five disciplines: the Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Longboard, Bodyboard and Stand Up Paddling (SUP). As well as winning the team prize, two IT Sligo students claimed individual titles. Gavin McCrea from Rossnowlagh, a Fine Art student, took gold in the men’s Longboard while Strandhill’s Aidan Kelly, who’s studying Pharmaceutical Science (online) won the Bodyboard event. This is IT Sligo’s second Intervarsities surfing title, having previously won the event in 2011.

BAN’s West by North West Syndicate will invest €2m in Irish startups in 2016 Target sectors include technology, manufacturing, education, tourism and medtech. HBAN, a joint initiative of InterTradeIreland and Enterprise Ireland responsible for the all-island promotion of business angel investment, today unveils its new angel syndicate. The West by North West (WxNW) syndicate, together with Enterprise Ireland, will invest €2 million in start-ups located around the western seaboard in 2016. The new syndicate includes 12 business angels based in or connected to the western seaboard of Ireland. These successful entrepreneurs have the experience, network and business acumen to help startups grow their businesses into international success stories. Over the next year, WxNW is actively recruiting to double its number of angels to 24 and become one of the largest syndicates in Ireland. Working with syndicates means

angels have the opportunity to diversify risk by spreading their investment across a number of companies with support from other angels both in WxNW and other syndicates throughout Ireland. HBAN’s WxNW syndicate wants to invest in west of Irelandbased and connected start-ups in sectors such as technology, manufacturing, education and tourism. The new syndicate is working closely with bodies such as Enterprise Ireland, WestBIC and the Western Development Commission to provide not only funding, but the support and access to networks to help these startups grow their businesses. Through its other syndicates, HBAN has already supported a number of companies located in the area, such as Embo Medical and Capsos Medical. HBAN last year celebrated reaching the milestone of €50M invested in start-ups across Ireland and Northern Ireland, cementing an annual growth of 44% in angel investment on the island since 2008. John Mullen, chair, The West

by North West Syndicate said: “WxNW is a harbour for angel investors either located around the western seaboard, or with an interest in or connection to the area. We’re conscious that there are active angels investing in the region and WxNW is a platform through which they can engage with more companies, spread risk and crucially, increase their chances of gaining significant returns on investments. “The area has shown promising growth in recent years, particularly in areas such as med-tech. We want to capitalise on this growth and the energy it breeds to give more start-ups across multiple sectors the opportunity to grow. Angel investment means start-ups receive the guidance, networking ability and experience – along with the funding needed – to grow into successful businesses.” Ger Barry, angel investor, WxNW added: “WxNW is a fantastic opportunity for angel investors to meet with likeminded individuals who want to invest in high-growth

potential start-ups. We’re in tune with the fact that there are many people across the country considering investing in the area, and want to spread the message that WxNW can provide support to both first-time and experienced investors.” Michael Culligan, national director, HBAN, said: “Research shows that angels and angel syndicates working together achieve better outcomes, both for companies and investors. WxNW is set to become an important part of the investment ecosystem along the western seaboard and the growing angel community in Ireland. We at HBAN look forward to supporting the evolution of the WxNW business angel syndicate” Business angels or start-ups interested in working with WxNW can get in contact through HBAN’s website www.hban.org, by contacting regional business angel coordinator Ultan Faherty via email on Ultan@hban.org, or by calling HBAN on 01 669 8525.

Project Proclamation

The week-long series of activities across the country, now in its 10th year, is held annually to promote engineering as a career and highlight the importance of the profession to Ireland. Engineers Week involves over 500 events nationwide

Big Mountain Productions, with Two Tube and RTÉ 2fm are inviting 11-17 year olds to create a one-minute film or audio piece, which documents or interprets their personal response to Proclamation Day. A selection of the projects we receive will be woven together into a half-hour documentary. In addition, 10 one minute films will be selected for broadcast on Two Tube on RTÉ 2 and 10 audio pieces will be selected for broadcast on 2FM. We want schoolgoers – that’s you – to tell us what you think about the Proclamation and the themes that mean the most to you. You have one minute to speak your mind. The emphasis is on looking to the future, on your hopes and dreams, rather than looking back. And you can

including school visits, engineering shows, industry open days with 200 engineering organisations in the private and public sector and engages over 37,500 participants including primary and post-primary students, parents, teachers and volunteer engineers. Speaking about the Week, Caroline Spillane, Director General of Engineers Ireland, said: “Engineers Week features a host of exciting events in Sligo, with the aim being to spark enthusiasm about the engineering profession to people of all ages, especially students, teachers and parents.” “Engineers have a key role in society solving global problems in areas like water management, infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, energy security and food supply. A career in engineering offers great diversity and I strongly urge the people of Sligo to get involved in the events in their locality.”

Mayo therapist reveals healing secrets of gems

A

Mayo therapist will be revealing the ancient healing secrets of gems when she appears at Ireland at Ireland’s biggest wellbeing event the Mind, Body, Spirit and Yoga Festival in the RDS, Dublin, from March 18 to 20. From her Foxford-based home Ailish Grey and her husband Ben Sinnott provide attractive pieces of amber jewellery to people across the country but the stones are not there just to look pretty. “Since Roman times amber has been used to relive chronic pain conditions. It acts as an anti-inflammatory when it is worn continually and people who have muscular pain, joint pain, skin conditions and even migraine, have told us how much it has helped them,” said Ailish. “Amber is 40 million-year-old tree resin it comes from the resin trees used to heal themselves and the warmth of the skin causes it to release its active element, Succinite. “The pharmaceutical industry uses Succinite in such things as anti-ageing, anti-alcohol and immune system repair products,” she said. A mother of two, Ailish first came across the healing properties of the gem in 2006 when her children were younger and

teething was causing them pain. “A friend explained to me about Amber and when I tried it I was so pleased with how it worked I recommended it to another friend.” Within a short time Ailish found requests coming in from lots of different people and thanks to word of mouth her home based business Amber SOS was born. Ailish is among a host of fascinating exhibitors and speakers at the inspirational festival which offers the chance to discover the latest in life enhancing positive psychology with 75 talks by top Irish and international experts plus exhibits by over 150 complementary and healing practitioners. “People can look forward to a truly stimulating, vibrant and potentially life-

changing experience at Mind, Body, Spirit,” said festival organiser Louis O’Sullivan. With over 150 stands visitors can explore everything from angels and aromatherapy to Reiki and reflexology, with sound therapy, massage, meditation, bio-energy healing, crystals, chakra tools, Tibetan bowls and yoga therapy. The live stage will be buzzing with free entertainment as a lively mix of 45 performances including music, dance, drumming and yoga demonstrations, take place over the three day event. Emphasising the importance of such assistance, Minister Ring said: “The funding announced

As a Mayoman, I am all too well aware that these events are the lifeblood of tourism for many parishes in this county.” The range of festivals being supported in Mayo, under the Fáilte Ireland Regional Festivals and Events Initiative includes: Westport Folk & Bluegrass

Mayo Student Band to play three top venues A band of students continue to make headway and will play some of Ireland’s largest venues this month. The fast-rising Mayo band EDS (Everyday Solution) are playing Belfast’s Ulster Hall on March 15th, Cork Opera House on March 18th and the Olympia Theatre Dublin on March 19th, supporting singer Shane Filan. The band will also play their own headline show at the Grand Social in Dublin on March 20th, with tickets on sale now for the gig. EDS have enjoyed runaway success in recent months. The band sold out two headline shows before Christmas, in Dublin and in Mayo and have continued to gig across

the country since, supporting Louis Walsh’s band HomeTown. The tours have followed the huge success EDS enjoyed in Vicar Street playing to 1,500 in August. The band completed big touring dates with HomeTown, the very successful group managed by Louis Walsh and the singers of the hit Where I Belong. EDS have played all across Ireland over the last few months, including Cork, UCH Limerick, Bundoran, Kildare, Kells, Tullamore, Drogheda and Clonmel. EDS played radio stations across the country as part of the tour to promote their own shows. EDS are five Mayo boys. The five formed

a band while at secondary school in Swinford and have continued since finishing their Leaving Cert. EDS also played to more than 2,000 in Castlebar and have featured on Today FM and RTE TV. Tickets for the 6pm all ages show on Sunday March 20th are on sale via Ticketmaster for €14. The Grand Social is one of Dublin’s most popular and fashionable music venues, located in the city centre right at the distinctive Ha’penny Bridge on Liffey Street. You can find more information about EDS and all its upcoming gigs on its Facebook page and on Twitter.

Counselling service offered as emotional impact of cancer is long-term

A

report on the Irish Cancer Society’s Counselling Service shows that many families impacted by a cancer diagnosis require emotional support in the months and years after a cancer diagnosis. While 48 per cent of those accessing the service did so within the same year of learning they had cancer, 20 per cent of clients attended for counselling within two years of diagnosis. A further 20 per cent of clients used the service between 3-10 years after a cancer diagnosis. The counselling service is available locally in Mayo Cancer Support Association, Castlebar, which is affiliated with the Irish Cancer Society. Ahead of Daffodil Day 2016 which takes place on Friday 11th of March 2016, the Society is highlighting the emotional impact of a diagnosis as one of the long term survivorship needs of cancer survivors. “Counselling provides emotional and practical support to cancer survivors and their families” said

Dorothy Thomas, Community Support Network Coordinator at the Irish Cancer Society. “Coping with cancer can be difficult and families may experience many emotions such as anxiety, fear and sadness. It can be valuable to speak to a counsellor who can provide support in adapting to life after cancer and in finding a new ‘normal’. “The report shows that cancer patients who attended for counselling make up 58 per cent of clients, 14 per cent were children, siblings or friends and 12 per cent were a partner or spouse, with a further 16 per cent requiring support following the death of a loved one. This further demonstrates the true impact of a cancer diagnosis on all of the family.” A network of community based cancer support services, affiliated to the Society, play a vital role in providing psychosocial care for cancer patients and their families in their own communities .The Irish Cancer Society granted €299,520 to support centres across the country in 2014 to provide a

counselling service, free of charge to cancer patients and their families. Over 1,000 cancer patients, survivors and their families, accessed the service availing of 6,086 individual counselling sessions. This counselling service fills a support gap for cancer patients who often report that while they are undergoing cancer treatment, the focus is on the treatment plan with support from the hospital team and other patients. It is only after the treatment is complete that they realise how much cancer has changed their lives. The emotional effects of cancer may not be felt until weeks, months or years after the initial diagnosis. People of all ages affected by cancer require emotional support. The majority of those attending the service were between the ages of 45-64 (52%) while 25% of clients were between the ages of 18 and 44 with this age group experiencing significant issues such as relationships, fertility and careers, all impacted on a

Mayo school exhibits at first Green-Schools Expo

Representing Sancta Maria College, Louisburgh at the Green-Schools Expo in the RDS were: (l-r) Francesca Smith, Teacher,; Eimear McDonnell; Sarah Walsh and Sarah Caulfield. Sancta Maria College, Louisburgh, Co Mayo was among the 23 exhibiting schools at the Green-Schools Expo in the RDS on Thursday, February 25th.

The event, Ireland’s first environmental expo for schools, attracted five thousand visitors from schools across the country and was officially launched

by President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins. In his speech the President welcomed the creativity, innovation and imagination on show at the Expo, and

Also speaking at the event was RTÉ broadcaster and Deputy Head of Forecasting in Met Éireann, Evelyn Cusack, who delivered the closing address. Organised by GreenSchools, the expo showcased exhibits across six themed zones by 23 exemplary Green-Schools. The 23 schools applied to exhibit at the Expo and were chosen based on their innovative and inventive approaches to the Green-Schools programme. Donate your Hair here… Kellys of Castlebar - “We are a Rapunzel Supporting Salon”

T

he Rapunzel Foundation is a charitable organization that works to improve the lives of those living with hair loss through fund raising as well as through hair raising. Its aim is to help people with hair loss through providing information, sharing stories and through the collection of pony tails for the manufacture of natural hair wigs. Hair is raised through the Rapunzel Foundation’s Ponytail campaign, where people commit to growing their hair with the view to their hair being sent to help make much needed wigs to improve the lives of those living with the hair loss. Collecting ponytails from donors helps to address the current global wig-hair shortage issue and allows us to alleviate the cost of wig purchase for those who need help most. For many ‘alopecians’ one of the best ways of dealing with alopecia is to wear a natural-looking wig made with the highest quality untreated human hair. This means not having to worry whether or not your colleagues or the people you meet as part of your daily life can tell if you are wearing a wig. Wearing a natural-looking wig can help give back some of the self confidence often lost after developing alopecia. It allows people to enjoy their lives without worrying about their alopecia or their wig. The Rapunzel Foundation is working to boost the level of hair donation in Ireland. We are doing this in order to increase the supply of the high quality untreated human hair which is used in the manufacture of wigs for people with alopecia and long term hair loss. Across Ireland the Foundation is creating an awareness of alopecia, a condition which can often have a social stigma attached to it due to a lack of understanding and information. The Rapunzel Foundation is financially assisting children and adults with alopecia who wish to wear a secure, comfortable, natural-looking human hair wig: a wig which will allow the child to engage in all aspects of their childhood, from swimming, horse-riding, gymnastics to the everyday rough and tumble of being a kid with every day living. Kellys Hair and Beauty Salon can be contacted on 094-9022973. They are located at Castle street, Castlebar Co. Mayo.

TV Star Gets $55m After Stalker Films Her Nude

A

TV sports presenter who was secretly recorded by a stalker while nude in a hotel room has been awarded $55m by a jury. Erin Andrews, a Fox Sports

reporter who also co-hosts Dancing With The Stars, had told the trial that she was left humiliated and depressed when the video was uploaded online, where it continues to be viewed

Erin Andrews said the video made her feel 'embarrassed and ashamed'

by millions of people. She had filed a lawsuit for $75m (ÂŁ52m) against the man who filmed her, Michael David Barrett, as well as the two companies which owned the hotel where the harassment took place in 2008. After deliberating for a full day, a jury decided Barrett was responsible for 51% of the blame and the compensation, while the hotel firms should share the rest. Barrett has already served twoand-a-half years in prison after he confessed to altering peepholes and deceiving the hotel's staff to learn Andrews' room number and request the room next door. He said he uploaded the footage online after TMZ refused to purchase it. Lawyers for the hotels had insisted that Barrett was entirely to blame for what happened to Andrews as he was a determined criminal, and also suggested that

the progress in her career since the incident was proof that her distress was not severe or permanent. But during a tearful testimony in Tennessee, Andrews said she is taunted about the video "every day of my life". She added: "Either I get a tweet or somebody makes a comment in the paper or somebody sends me a still video to my Twitter or someone screams it at me in the stands and I'm right back to this. "I feel so embarrassed and I am so ashamed." Her parents had also testified reliving the terror their family had felt after the video emerged because they didn't know who had taken it, where it was shot and whether their daughter was still being watched. Following the verdict, several jurors hugged Andrews - and one even asked for an autograph.

AC/DC Halts Tour Over 'Total Deafness' Fears

T

Brian Johnson, 68, joined the Australian band in 1980

he rock band's lead singer is told to stop performing immediately by doctors, as there is a real risk he could lose his hearing. AC/DC have postponed the 10 remaining shows of their US tour after lead singer Brian Johnson was told he risked total deafness if he continues to perform. In a statement, the band said those rescheduled gigs will likely be with a guest vocalist. The cancellations have left fans uncertain of whether the long-running group are going to play the European leg of their Rock Or Bust tour, which is due to begin on 7 May in Lisbon. Johnson had been advised to stop touring immediately by doctors.

He had joined AC/DC in 1980 after the band's former lead singer, Bon Scott, died following a night of heavy drinking. Concerns over the 68-year-old's hearing are the latest problem to hit the group's ageing members. In September 2014, one founding member of AC/DC, Malcolm Young, left permanently at the age of 61 after he was diagnosed with dementia. Last July, the band parted ways with Phil Rudd after he was convicted of threatening to kill an employee, and pleaded guilty to possessing marijuana and methamphetamine. The drummer was sentenced to eight months of home detention by a judge in New Zealand.

Tributes Paid To 'The Godfather' Of Email Raymond Tomlinson, the inventor of the modern day email, has died at the age of 74. The American programmer, who reportedly suffered a suspected heart attack, wrote and sent the first person-to-person email in 1971. He has been credited with making the "@" icon a mainstay of the online world - and

when Mr Tomlinson first showed his invention to a colleague, he famously said: "Don't tell anyone! This isn't what we're supposed to be working on." Despite becoming a cult figure in technology circles, associates described him as a "really nice, down-to-earth, good guy" who was patient and generous with his time.

When asked what he had written in those first emails, sparking a communication revolution, he said they were "entirely forgettable and I have, therefore, forgotten them". Up until his death, Mr Tomlinson had continued to work for Raytheon as a principal scientist - and in his spare time, he raised miniature sheep with his partner in Massachusetts. His biography on the Internet Hall of Fame website credits him with transforming how "millions of people shop, bank, and keep in touch with friends and family, whether they are across town or across oceans". When he was inducted into the hall of fame in 2012, he said he had "no notion whatsoever" about the impact email would have as personal computers became prolific in homes. Harry Forsdick, who commuted with Mr Tomlinson for 15 years, said: "Like many inventors, the invention for which he is known, email, probably represents less of his talent and imagination than many other ideas and projects he worked on over his career."

Moonpig 'Sorry' Over Mother's Day Deliveries Moonpig, whose greeting card service accounts for a major share of the online market, apologises after being hit with complaints. Moonpig has apologised after being bombarded with complaints from customers about deliveries of Mother's Day cards and flowers that were damaged, delayed or failed to arrive. The online greeting card and gift firm spent Mother's Day answering the stream of complaints on social media before reportedly attributing the problems to "an issue" with a supplier. Among the complaints posted on Twitter and Facebook were photos of flowers with wilted leaves and snapped stems and a smashed vase. Helen Palmer posted a photo of a sorry-looking bouquet and a damaged vase along with the comment "#unhappy Mother's Day". Michael Blair wrote on Twitter: "OMG ! Flowers just arrived for Mum - broken, ripped, dead, disgusting! And no card til Monday either!" Becky Peters, from Newport, South Wales, tweeted: "@MoonpigUK two years in a row you have disappointed me, you've lost a customer. Don't advertise your cards to be delivered on Mother's Day if they're not going to arrive." But there were some customers who were much more positive about Moonpig's service. Melissa Rose Ledbury wrote on Facebook: "Quite surprised to see all the negative comments, I was going to say I'm really pleased with my order, my mum text me around 10 to say her flowers had arrived and said they look lovely!" A spokesman for Moonpig told the BBC: "We can confirm that an issue with one of our suppliers has delayed the delivery of flowers to some of our customers this weekend. "We know how important Mother's Day is and we have apologised to and compensated all customers who have experienced a delay. "We've been working hard to put things right and by the end of Mother's Day almost all orders have been delivered. We hope our customers accept our sincere apologies."

Dead May Outnumber Living On Facebook By 2098 Facebook could become the world's biggest virtual graveyard by the end of the century, a statistician claims. The social network has around 1.5bn users around the world, but by 2098 the number of dead users could outnumber the living. This is due to plateauing numbers of new users, and Facebook's policy of not automatically deleting the profiles of the dead. The prediction was made by statistician Hachem Sadikki, from the University of Massachusetts. Close to one million Facebook users are expected to die this year alone - up from 385,000 in 2010 when Facebook had a much smaller user base. Facebook's current policy means that when a user dies, their page is automatically turned into a memorial. The only way to delete the page is to have someone login using their password and delete it. Given that most people do not share their password at all, it is unlikely that most people will be able to close the account of a dead loved one. The problem can often be upsetting - with some dead people still appear as having birthdays in users' news feeds and alerts. Facebook has started to ask people to appoint a 'Legacy Contact' before they die. The contact has the power to write one last post after a person's death, as well as updating their cover and profile photo.

Energy Mythbusting Is it cheaper to have the heating on all day?

S

hould you keep your heating on all day on low? And what about painting radiators black? We've gone on an energy mythbusting mission, so you can find out if common tricks to cut energy usage really work.

Here are the key questions you asked, with their answers below. Should I leave the heating on low all day, or turn the thermostat up and down?

This one divides opinion. Some say you'll save energy, and therefore money, by only having the heating on when it's required. Using a timer is best, because your thermostat is designed to turn your heating system on and off to keep your

home at the temperature you set it. However it's a grey area. Another school of thought says it is best to keep the heating on at a low temperature all day, turning all radiator valves up to the max, and the boiler down to the minimum. Should I keep the hot water boiler on all the time, or turn it on and off as needed? If you have a gas, oil or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) central heating system, it will always be cheaper to time the system so the hot water comes on only when required. However, if you use an electrical immersion heater and have an night-time tariff (where energy is cheaper at night), it's cheaper to heat your water during the night. Make sure your tank is well insulated to prevent it cooling during the day, though. Is it cheaper to use radiators or electric heaters? Electric heaters are one of the most expensive forms of heating. Generally, the cheapest way is using an efficient oil/gas central heating system, with a full set of thermostatic radiator valves, a room thermostat and a timer. Do phone or laptop chargers still use electricity when they're plugged in, but not connected to

the device? Try to unplug chargers when not in use. A lot of devices draw power when plugged in and not in use. This is sometimes known as 'vampire power'. Using this standby power can be easily avoided by switching devices off at the wall. Electric providers say on its website that leaving chargers in a socket uses energy (if the charger is warm, it's using energy). It says that some chargers (including those from Apple) turn themselves off when not connected to a device. It adds that, generally, branded chargers are more efficient than nonbranded ones. Should I run appliances at night? If you're on an night-time tariff, you'll pay less during the night, but a higher rate than average during the day. But if you're on another tariff, it doesn't make any difference.

Ireland’s Potato Market Returns to Growth for the First Time in Seven Years

National Potato Conference highlights the health benefits of potatoes

M

arket Research by Kantar Worldpanel unveiled at the National Potato Conference in Dublin today is seeing positive value and volume growth for the first time in seven years, as shoppers are returning to buy more often - making 34 trips in the year. However, the volumes they buy on each trip still haven’t recovered to 2007-8 levels. In 2007, potato volume purchased by the average Irish household was 140kg per year, in 2015 that had fallen to 119kgs. Farmers and industry from across the country attended the National Potato Conference and Trade Show today, organised by IFA, Teagasc and Bord Bia in Dublin. Bord Bia, in conjunction with the Irish Farmers’ Association and the Irish Potato Federation, has embarked on an EU and industry funded three year promotional campaign for potatoes, Potatoes: More Than A Bit On The Side, which aims to increase the consumption of potatoes and specifically targets 22-44 year old females. IFA National Chairman Jer Bergin welcomed the joint initiative with the UK, which is funded by growers, packers and the Department of Agriculture.

“This investment by growers is important for their future and must deliver a greater market return for potato producers. The potato industry is worth nearly €80m at farm gate. This year growers have experienced a better year, but only relative to the disastrous prices of the previous two”. Lorcan Bourke, Sector Manager for Potatoes at Bord Bia, said: “This collaborative initiative will see potatoes presented as a naturally fat and gluten-free ingredient, that can be used in many different ways and for a variety of occasions, to positively change the perception of younger consumers about potatoes and show that they are indeed, as the campaign name highlights, more than a bit on the side”. Respected dietitian, Aoife Hearne, speaking at the conference, commented: “For health and weight loss, we really need to move away from the idea that following a diet is the best approach, and instead move to a place where we are focusing on wellness, eating intuitively, and moving towards natural foods. Potatoes, a nonprocessed carbohydrate, are a great example of a natural, fat-free, gluten-free and nutrient-rich food that more

people should be including as part of a balanced diet”. “Unfortunately, ‘carbophobia’ has struck the weight loss market hard – yet what many forget is that carbohydrates provide essential nutrients and much-needed energy for the whole body, but particularly for brain function. It’s important that Irish people rethink their relationship with potatoes, by breaking with their focus on traditional uses and start appreciating them as a low fat meal ingredient for use in a variety of ways – including leaving the nutritious skin on. The Potatoes: More Than A Bit On The Side campaign has developed many delicious, healthy and easy to prepare recipes, to help cook potatoes in much more exciting ways.” Michael Hennessy, Head of Crops Knowledge Transfer in Teagasc, outlined the Salad Potatoes initiative aimed at increasing the production of salad potatoes grown in Ireland: “The industry has all the elements necessary to increase salad potato production as we have suitable soils, existing infrastructure and a market anxious to sell Irish produce”. He went on to outline the core elements of the initiative and how working

with Slaney Produce in Wexford had helped to demonstrate best practice to other growers in 2015. Fiona Hutton, Teagasc, commented: “Virus in potatoes is a serious problem and can lead to yield losses of up to 50%”. Fiona then outlined virus incidence across Ireland and the control measures necessary, “there isn’t one main virus control technique, as a combination of measures are needed such as clean seed, rouging and chemical control, which are among the most important”. Dr. Marc Alison, from Cambridge University Farms, NIAB, UK, outlined the relationship between nitrogen and the growth habit of potatoes. Marc emphasised the importance of full canopy cover as soon as possible in the season to capture available light: “Delaying planting will delay emergence and result in reduce yields”. Cultivation practice was also discussed by Marc who gave this advice: “growers have a tendency to de-stone too deep increasing costs and reducing tuber yields”. Dairy farms the most lethal workplace - HSA Risk factor for fatal injury is 24 times that of the average workplace says senior inspector Full-time dairy farms have become the most ‘lethal’ workplace in the country with the risk factor for fatal injury 24 times higher than that in the average workplace. “Dairy farming is by far the riskiest job in the country at the moment and I think dairy farmers urgently need to do something about that,” said Pat Griffin, senior inspector with the Health and Safety Authority (HSA). Teagasc research has found that while dairying accounts for less than one-sixth of farms, fatal accidents on dairy farms now account for three out of every five farm fatalities. Those most at risk are full-time dairy farmers aged 55 plus and working over 30ha. Mr Griffin said that the expansion in dairy farming could not be ruled out as a contributory factor to the 30 farm fatalities in 2014. Round bales have also emerged as a new risk factor. They were responsible for eight farm deaths over the last two years, compared with none during the previous decade. Another trend is that cows are now killing more farmers than bulls are. “Cows kill more farmers than bulls at this stage. They are very unpredictable, particularly heifers calving for the first time and suckler cows,” said Mr Griffin. An estimated 90pc of accidents occurred around yards and buildings, he said. The most deadly hour on dairy farms is between 11am and 12 noon, leading to speculation among safety experts about tiredness and under-nourishment creating a black spot around noon. “Very few fatalities occur before 9am despite the farm day starting much earlier. This indicates the work involving the most risk is not undertaken early in the day,” said Mr Griffin. “Maybe the farmer is more alert in the morning. But I would not rule out the impact of the farmer being dehydrated or not having the proper nourishment for full focus,” he said. He also called for more safety training on new equipment. “A new machine is delivered to the farm and off the farmer goes without training in the use of the equipment. It would not happen in any other sector and it needs to change if farm fatalities are to be avoided,” he said. The low profitability in farming is also emerging as a major safety risk factor. Some farmers were cutting corners and working longer hours to save costs which is leading to “isolation, stress levels and lots of difficulties,” said Mr Griffin. He criticised the absence of a farm safety requirement for the Single Farm Payment and pointed out that the training required under TAMS II is creating greater awareness around safety issues. However, the IFA said that linking farm safety to cross compliance under the Single Farm Payment scheme would not have the desired impact because it would increase the stress on farm families. “This has been shown to increase the risk of ill health and accidents. Increased regulation has been shown internationally not to reduce the number of farm accidents. Traditional policy tools, including legislation, sanctions and regulations have had limited impact at changing human behaviour,” it claimed. Instead, the IFA want a safety module included in the discussion group programme.

focus on farming Rural Charter Required To Deliver Balanced Regional Development IFA Deputy President and Countryside Chairman Tim O’ Leary has called on the next Government to support farming and the wider rural economy by implementing the measures contained in the Association’s rural affairs policy document. Mr. O’ Leary said, “IFA’s Policy Charter for Rural Ireland identifies key measures to deliver a more balanced economic recovery across the regions, which is essential with CSO figures showing contrasting unemployment rates across the country, ranging from 8.8% in Dublin to 12 and 13% in the West, Midlands and South-East regions. Policy priorities under the Association’s Rural Charter include: A high quality rural fibre broadband network across the countryside, to support farm business, job creation, investment and rural development. A three year exemption from local authority rates for new business start-ups, to support local enterprise development in rural areas. Measures such as tax-credits to encourage employers to take on apprentices and create long term employment. Tax incentives for businesses to locate in villages and town centres, which have been decimated during the recession. Increased and measurable targets for policing hours and presence of mobile units in rural areas by An Garda Síochána, to reduce crime and create a greater sense of security in the countryside. An increased and ring-fenced annual rural roads budget from the Department of Transport each year, allocated to local authorities as part of a planned repair and maintenance programme. An increase in the number of voluntary rural walk schemes to support economic development and tourism in rural areas. A package of measures from the Department of Transport to facilitate the development of proposed Greenway projects, while protecting farmers’ rights. Increased fines and greater enforcement by local authorities to tackle the scourge of littering by passing motorists and users of the countryside. Rural Ireland continues to be a good place to live and work in and enjoy. However, this Rural Charter seeks to address the challenges faced by rural communities and ensure a more balanced recovery takes place.

T

he hunt is on for the country’s top farmers as the Zurich Farming Independent Farmer of the Year Awards returns, with a fantastic prize fund of over €20,000. If you believe you are one of the best producers in the country or you know one of the top farmers now is your chance to get recognition for all the hard work. You can log on to

www.farmeroftheyear.ie to apply online or to download a form to enter by post. The awards are free to enter and farmers can nominate themselves or alternatively be nominated by a third party There are a wide range of categories available to enter including Beef, Sheep, Dairy, Tillage, Equestrian, Alternative Farm Enterprises and Rising Stars,

as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award and a Grand Prix Award for the overall Farmer of the Year for 2016. Last year’s Lifetime Achievement Award went to Anna May McHugh for her dedicated service to the National Ploughing Association. In addition there is a category to promote excellence in farm safety, which is being sponsored by the Health and Safety

Authority (HSA). The Alternative Farm Enterprise category gives farmers involved in more niche enterprises such as vegetables, fruit, pigs, poultry, flowers, and organics, along with those engaged in forestry, an opportunity to show-case their achievements. The Rising Star section is aimed at recognising the huge pool of talent that is coming up through the ranks of Irish agriculture. Award winners will share a prize fund of €20,000 which will be presented at a glitzy ceremony in The Ballsbridge Hotel in Dublin on Friday May 20, 2016. The competition is run in conjunction with Zurich Insurance, and with categories sponsored by ICMSA, ICSA, Teagasc, Landrover and the Health and Safety Authority. Michael Doyle, head of sales and agri-business with Zurich Insurance, said that the company was thrilled to be involved in the initiative for the third year in a row. “As one of the country’s leading providers of farm insurance, we are proud to continue as title sponsor of these prestigious awards, which are now an annual highlight in the farming calendar,” he said. “The Farmer of the Year Awards highlight the dedication and innovation which has been witnessed in the farming community over the past few years, and celebrate the high achievers in the industry. We are delighted to be involved in recognising these successes and look forward to seeing this year’s entries.”

Farmers need ˆ7/kg to make early spring lambs viable’ Farming organisations are disappointed with the first quotes offered by factories for spring lambs this year. Irish Country Meats is the first processor to offer a quote for spring lamb, starting with a base price of €6.40/kg. IFA Sheep Committee Chairman John Lynskey said the price being offered for spring lambs is similar to the price farmers received for hoggets this time last year. According to Lynskey, farmers were offered €7/kg for spring lamb and €6.20/kg for hoggets in March 2015. “There is high cost involved in producing spring lambs. We thought the prices would have started at €7.00/kg, but there is no mention of this yet.” Lynskey also said that early spring lamb production is a high-cost system as the ewe has to be fed concentrates for a longer period of time and so

farmers should be rewarded with a strong price. He also said that the number of farmers producing lambs for the Easter market has dropped in recent years because of high costs and low returns. “If the price opened up at €7/kg it would have a knock-on effect on the price of lamb for the rest of the summer,” he said. ICSA’s Sheep Committee Chairman John Brooks said that €6.50/kg is not nearly enough for early spring lamb, as it is a very unique product. He said that farmers should be paid at least €7/kg for these lambs. “If the price does not improve in the next couple of weeks the early spring lamb industry could collapse.” Farmers producing these lambs should also be getting paid up to a 22kg carcass, he said, which would be some benefit to the farmer.

he Teagasc ICT Agri Seminar opened in Dublin recently. Speaking in the Aviva Stadium, Professor Gerry Boyle Director of Teagasc said: “ICT and digital technologies have transformed many sectors of our economy and of our lives, from transport, logistics and manufacturing to music and books. The same potential exists in the agriculture sector. Digital Technologies for Sensing, Analytics and Automation are some of the key emerging technologies with the potential to revolutionise the future of Irish agriculture. Already some of that potential is being realised, as shown here today. But this is only a taster of what could be achievable in the future.” Today’s event has brought together end users, industry, research performers and research funders, to identify the current state of the art technologies in use, address upcoming challenges and look to future opportunities. In recent years, Teagasc has put in

place a number of key building blocks which will provide a basis for future development of digital agriculture solutions In Ireland. These include the Teagasc National Farm Survey, PastureBase Ireland, Soils Information System and Teagasc NMP-online. As well as developing the building blocks for future solutions, Teagasc has developed a series of partnerships with complementary groupings like the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF), Tyndall National Institute, and the Waterford Institute of Technology’s Telecommunication Software and Systems Group (TSSG). Teagasc’s membership of the ICTAGRI Era-NET has been a major catalyst for the development of research lines in the area of digital agriculture. The grouping of research funders and leading research performers from across Europe has allowed Teagasc to tap into high level expertise and to contribute to a European Strategic Research Agenda in this area.

Firefighters had to be called to a milking parlour on a farm in Chester in England last week after a cow got trapped in a rotary milker. Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to the farm where the cow was trapped. It is understood that the cow became trapped after it fell from the milking unit in the parlour. Cheshire Fire Service said that a vet who

was in attendance sedated the cow and the farm owner disabled the milk machine. The electrics of the rotary milker were also isolated. Fire crews from Chester removed the cow from the machinery using lines and straps. The Cheshire Fire Service tweeted a photo of the trapped cow with the caption ‘Firefighters rescued a cow that was stuck in the middle of a milking machine in Chester’.

The Department of Agriculture today announced an extension to the closing date for submission of 2016 Nitrates Derogation applications. It says the decision to extend the closing date to Friday, April 15, 2016, was taken in light of the significant interest in new Derogation applications. The number of farmers applying for nitrates derogations is up over 50% since 2007, according to latest figures from the Department of Agriculture. Some 6,323 farmers applied for the derogation in 2015 which allows farmers to exceed the limit of 170 kg of livestock manure nitrogen per hectare set down in the Nitrates Regulations, up to a maximum of 250 kg per hectare, subject to adherence to stricter rules. Nitrates Derogation applications can only be submitted online using the using the Department’s on-line facilities. Farmers

not already registered for agfood.ie can do so by logging onto www.agfood.ie and clicking the ‘Register’ button. The Nitrates Derogation documentation is available on the Department’s website. The Department figures also show that 2,336 farmers breached the 170kg N/ha limit in 2014 and did not apply for a derogation. Some may have exported slurry, rented/grazed other lands not declared on SPS 2014 or were affected with TB. Farmers using over 170kg N/ha who did not apply for a derogation have reduced significantly since 2007; however, in 2014 and 2015 these have risen due to increased stock numbers, mainly on dairy farms. Fewer farmers are over 250kg N/ha, as farmers are reducing stocking rates or exporting slurry to comply. There are penalties for farmers who exceed 170kg organic N/ha, but who did not apply for a derogation in that year

he Teagasc ICT Agri Seminar opened in Dublin recently.

He has played with Mairtin O’Connor, Cathal Hayden, Jimmy Higgins, Dervish, The Unwanted, Tommy Emmanuel, Kieran Ouinn, Christy Moore, and Liam O’Flynn, to name but a few. Seamie O’Dowd’s musical career has seen him progress from his first radio broadcast at ten years of age, on up through the ranks of various strands of the Sligo traditional Irish, blues, folk and rock scenes to being an extensively travelled, experienced and much sought after musician, singer and producer. He has released two albums, “Headful Of Echoes” and “Wood and Iron”, which will feature strongly in this solo performance alongside a few things he’s working on for the future. His solo performances have been described as being able to rival any band so don’t miss a rare opportunity to witness his immense talent in this solo setting.

Phoenix Players perform The Sunshine Boys The Phoenix Players Drama Group return to Ballina Arts Centre, with another quality theatrical performance, on Thursday, 7th April, at 8pm. They have entertained and enthralled theatre enthusiasts in the Western region since its inception in Tubbercurry in 1945. Lewis and Clark were famous comedians during the vaudeville era; off-stage, though, they can’t stand each other and haven't spoken in over 20 years. Ben, Willy Clark's nephew, is the producer of a variety show that wants to feature a reunion of the classic duo. How will Ben convince the crotchety old comedians to put aside their differences before the big show? Tickets: €14 / €12. Booking advised.

Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond Tribute Acts Could it get any better than this? Three of UK & Europe’s most highly regarded Tribute acts to Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers & Neil Diamond, join forces with the exceptionally popular Conspiracy band on Saturday 9th April, 8pm. Audiences will be toe-tapping, singing along, and dancing in the isles to many of the classic hits the artists are known for. These performers are the closest tributes to the real thing, and a must see for anyone who enjoys American country. Tickets: €20. Booking advised.

Fri 18 Mar, 8pm, Free @ The Hawkswell The Civil War is not a drama, it’s not a novel. It’s a sordid, wretched thing… the loss of life makes no sense whatsoever'. – Michael McDowell. As part of the Hawk’s Well’s Theatre Artist in Residency programme, Bob Kelly presents the first of three work-in-progress readings. This first piece, focusing on anti-treaty revolutionaries, is loosely inspired by happenings in Sligo during the War of Independence and Civil War, including the story of Sligo’s ‘Noble Six.’

TRANSLATIONS @ THE HAWKSWELL By Brian Friel, Tues 8 – Sat 12 Mar, 8pm, €15/12conc. Translations is a play about love, culture and tradition, and the circumstances that force the break with these traditions. The play is one of the giants of the Irish canon from the pen of the recently deceased playwright, Brian Friel. Friel himself said that Translations was "a play about language and only about language". The locals want to learn the English language so they have a better chance of a job when they emigrate. One of the British soldiers wants to learn the Irish language in order to better understand the Irish culture. It is this clash of cultures that gives the play its tension. Sligo Drama Circle is delighted to have been granted permission to perform this Brian Friel play as they embark on their 60th Anniversary year.

Madame de Markievicz on Trial @ The Hawkswell Theatre

By Ann Matthews / Thurs 24 Mar, 8pm €15 /12 friends /10 u18s

Following a sell-out run in Dublin, Madame de Markievicz on Trial is on a national tour. It is a drama centred around Constance Markievicz depicting an event in Dublin at Easter in 1916 when a policeman was fatally shot. It is set in a courtroom and a prison cell during the autumn of 1917 and the dialogue is largely based on the extensive speeches made by Markievicz during this time. The play has a cast of four women and two men. Apart from the prosecutor, all the characters are based on actual people and each one is impressive in their strength of character. William May, the prosecutor and sole fictional character in the drama is the Devil’s Advocate. He trawls through all aspects Madam’s life and times from her birth to 1917 to challenge the misinformation created by post 1916 propaganda. The testimonies of the witnesses are interwoven to show that Madam was a normal multi-dimensional woman in contrast to the usual one-dimensional icon frequently presented. The audience will be the ultimate judge, as they leave the theatre to decide to issue an innocent or guilty verdict.

Manchan Magan’s Gaeilge Tamagotchi at Ballina Arts Centre On Friday 18th March, as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, Ballina Arts Centre invites people of all ages – gaeilgeoirs, rusty Irish speakers, non Irish speakers – to participate

in Gaeilge Tamagotchi, an Irish revival installation by Irish language activist Manchan Magan. Gaeilge Tamagotchi is a project where Magan presents a seldomused Irish word or phrase to participants for their own unique usage and exploration. Magan tells us that there are 30,000 words in Sheakespeares’ works; that most people use approximately 12,000 words in their lifetimes; and that there are an incredible 4,400 Irish words to describe a person in the Irish language. This shows how wonderfully rich our native language is and from this viewpoint Gaeilge Tamagotchi offers a fun tool as a creative and hopeful step towards revival. You ritually receive your unique word from Magan and then you can spend time painting it on wood, stone or paper, or creating a symbol for it to take home with you. Like the Tamagotchi loved by young people you will need to interact with this gift/toy, give it attention, see what it means as it

reveals its depth, insightfulness, good humour, light-heartedness etc. to you. Simply give it attention and see where it leads you. For example, you could use it as a password in your computer, call your dog after it, use it for inspiration in a painting, poem, short story and continue with the creativity from which it originates. Manchan Magan is a travel writer, a TV travel presenter, as Gaeilge, a part time columnist with the Irish Times and an increasingly prominent activisit for the revival of the use of Irish in every day life. His latest project being the thought provoking TV programme No Bearla. Gaeilge Tamagotchi will be at Ballina Arts Centre on Friday 18th March, starting at 7pm. Admission is free, but booking is advised. The Project is supported by Gaeilge Mayo Co. Co. and Conradh na Gaeilge’s Community Fund. Detox your Liver T

he liver is one of the most important organs that help the natural detoxification process within the body. Human bodies need healthy livers to fight against the environmental toxins. The liver also helps in healing the immune system and is an important part of digestion. The liver prepares glycogen, which can be converted into glucose by the body in times of need. It can store quantities of glycogen enough for up to 24 hours. The liver is one of the natural detoxifying agents of the body. The human body is exposed to toxins every day. Hormones influencing physical and mental well-being are activated in the liver. The liver further breaks them down into water-soluble substances and they are passed out through stool and urine. Excessive storage of toxins in the body hampers the natural processes of the liver. Some of the most common symptoms are a chronic fatigue, headaches, and a diminished bile flow. Impaired liver functions can cause viral infections of the liver and alcohol induced fatty deposits. The best time for a liver detox is spring. The warm weather is the perfect time for a diet full of filtered water, raw fruits and vegetables. A liver flush is one of the most simple and popular types of cleansing techniques. It is used for the elimination of excess fatty acids and other toxic substances from the liver. The

liver flush can be described as a regimen of light exercise supported with an intake of herbal teas and the liver flush mixture. The liver flush mixture is a mixture of freshly squeezed citrus and lemon or lime juices, squeezed garlic and a small amount of ginger root juice, added with one tablespoon of olive oil. A natural food diet has to be consumed for the rest of the day. This regimen should be taken for at least ten days. The liver cleansing formula should be taken for at least two weeks.

Milk thistle is a natural herb that has been known to have strengthening and healing powers over the liver. It is an antioxidant and can protect the liver from radical damage. The herb is available in tablet form and in major natural foods stores. Milk thistle can be consumed after performing the liver flush. Detox provides detailed information on Detox, Detox Diet, Drug Detox, Alcohol Detox and more. Detox is affliated with Drug Detoxification.
