From the International evening on Monday, the amazing sell-out prom night on Monday, a sun-soaked Heritage Day on Wednesday, Country and Western night, dozens of other events, culminating in the Mardi Gras/Fireworks on Saturday, and the Teddy Bears’ event on Sunday, this is a festival that will be relived and recalled for years to come. N
EWS that the government has formally approved plans to introduce an opt-out system for organ donation, giving the green light to Minister Harris to start drafting legislation is set to generate much discussion over this serious issue over the coming months. The major change, outlined in the Human Tissues Bill, providing people with the opportunity to opt out rather than opt in is expected to result in an increase in the general level of organs available in an environment where the country’s hospitals have been reporting a serious lack of donors. According to Minister Simon Harris: “Organ donation is among the most selfless acts we can bestow upon another person. An opt-out system and accompanying publicity campaign will raise awareness among individuals and encourage discussion among families of their intentions...” The current “opt-in” system gives people the opportunity to volunteer their organs through the use of a donor card, or for their families to grant permission after their death. The new proposals would mean that a person’s organs would be automatically harvested unless they specifically requested not to allow this. In practice, the new rules mean a person would have to sign a register to state that they do not want their organs removed once they pass. If they do not, their consent will be taken as given. However, their next of kin will still ultimately have the power to refuse the removal of the organs. North-West Express spoke to a man who feels so lucky that he was a recipient of a kidney a few years ago – a development which has transformed his life. While he encourages more people to donate organs he has reservations about the new proposals as they stand. He fears additional, unnecessary pressures could be placed on relatives of the deceased at a sensitive time under the proposed new legislation, particularly if appropriate organisational structures are not put in place to introduce the new system. The matter is bound to generate some debate and even controversy and it is hoped major consideration will be given to the Madden Report (2006) on post-mortem practices before the legislation is finalised.

Food bank set to open in Boyle
E
CONOMICALLY, there may be an upturn, but it looks like it’s not lifting all boats. News that a food bank is scheduled to open in Boyle may surprise some, but it’s an indication that despite improvements the number of people in need continues to grow. The facility is designed to help those going without meals because of the burden of financial commitments. A recent meeting in the town attracted a number of people interested in helping
with the distribution of food to hard pressed families. Boyle man Tony Scanlon has joined forces with the Family Resource Centre in a bid to ensure that any families needing food can avail of it. It is hoped that within the coming weeks that food will be made available on two days a week for children, families and individuals who through a shortage of money are being forced to go without food. Mr Scanlon, who set up a Facebook page “Poverty and Homelessness” last
month to establish the level of need in the region, said he had no doubt that people were going without meals because of the burden of other financial commitments. Previous foodstuff distributions from the Family Resource Centre has yielded a database of hundreds of people in need of food, but Tony believes that the number would now be far greater. “There are people who would previously have received food through the the European Fund for Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD) and now we will look after those people as well as those who are not in receipt of welfare. The reality is that changing lifestyles has resulted in people unable to put food on the table. We’re encountering families where one of the parents has lost their job but the big mortgage still needs to be paid, raising insurance costs etc. and by the time those bills are paid there is a real struggle to put food on the table,” he said. Mr Scanlon said zero hours contracts and illness were factors for some people. He has already been contacted by one woman who, after the expenses associated with a cancer diagnosis and treatment, is managing to feed two adults and two children on €30 a week. Many people who seek help say they are ashamed to have to seek help in this way, but they have no option as there is nothing in the cupboards.

Mac Stay... ing power fuels Roscommon triumph! AFTER taking such a bashing from critics for many months, and retaining a calm silence through it all, it is likely that if Roscommon’s team manager (and Ballina native) Kevin McStay was standing for election this week in a Roscommon constituency he would top the poll. Nobody could have believed that Roscommon would topple Galway in such a decisive fashion on Sunday week in the Connacht final. The team’s relentless, controlled performance throughout the 70 minutes silenced most of McStay’s critics. Even during a period in the second half when Galway seemed to be getting the upper hand, the same consistent performance was maintained throughout the field – Roscommon finishing with a flourish and an unbelievable nine-point victory. Similarily, it seems Mayo might have found their mo-jo again, as evidenced by their second half come-back against a talented
and resilient Clare side. However, it will be only after they overcome Cork on Sunday, and maintain a measure of consistency in their performances, that supporters will be convinced of the strength of this team? As it stands, of course, three Connacht teams still remain in the hunt for ultimate honours. What are the chances of Mayo meeting Roscommon down the road? Most punters feel, however, it will be Mayo v Kerry, if the westerners overcome Cork. Mayo should be back to full-strength by then and, with Aiden O’Shea coming back to his best form, it all makes for an exciting climax to this year’s championship. At the moment, however, it’s definitely been Roscommon’s week . . . and Kevin McStay’s week. However, the genial Ballina man will keep his powder dry and concentrate on the task at hand – to push his Roscommon charges ever further in 2017.

- MacSharry
Fianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Marc Mac Sharry says we are in danger of losing GP services in the North West, but particularly in Co. Leitrim unless the Government starts implementing measures to retain and recruit doctors in rural areas. Deputy Mac Sharry made the comments after it was revealed that 50% of GP’s in Leitrim will reach retirement age within the next seven years. “GP services have been declining steadily over the past number of years as a result of a chronic shortage of doctors throughout the country. It is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit GPs to areas outside the main urban hubs, and as a result, towns and villages across Ireland are being left without an adequate service”, explained Deputy Mac Sharry. “The situation is particularly bleak in
Leitrim, as new information shows that half of GPs in the county will reach retirement age within the next seven years. The Irish Medical Organisation has warned that it will be impossible to replace many of these doctors once they retire as there simply aren’t enough people training to become GPs. This year, for the first year, the GP training scheme was under-subscribed. It is inevitable that many rural areas will be left without a primary health care service if this trend continues. “The local GP is the first port of call for a person who is sick and in need of medical care. If there aren’t enough GPs in our towns and villages, people will be forced to go to the Emergency Department, and the overcrowding crisis there will be further exacerbated. It’s a vicious circle and the patients are the
ones who are losing out. “GPs are under immense pressure, working longer hours, seeing more patients and taking on more on-call work. Unfortunately, they’re not getting fair treatment from the Government - they have had their funding cut by 38% in recent years and the end result is that young people simply aren’t entering the profession. “This is a serious crisis facing our health service. Having access to a local primary health service is not a luxury and rural Ireland shouldn’t’ have to say goodbye to yet another fundamental community service. The Government needs to get to grips with this crisis now. Funding for GP services needs to be increased to make it more attractable for young doctors to setup practice in rural communities,” concluded Deputy Mac Sharry.

ayo students have won two separate journalism competitions at University of Limerick (UL). Shane McNamara, an MA in Journalism student at UL, won the inaugural University of Limerick Irish Examiner Video Journalism prize while Claremorris man Cillian Sherlock took the top prize in the UL/Live 95 FM radio journalism competition. Broadcast on IrishExaminer.ie, Shane McNamara’s multimedia piece entitled “Rescue 116: The people behind the recovery” focused on those involved in the efforts to recover the bodies of those lost when Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 116 crashed in March. Captain Mark Duffy (51), Captain Dara Fitzpatrick (45), winch operator Ciarán Smith (38) and winchman Paul Ormsby (53) died when the helicopter crashed 12km off the County Mayo coast. Editorial Manager for the Irish Examiner, Diane McDermott, who presented the cheque to Mr McNamara in UL this week, said Shane’s work stood out due to its attention to detail and came top of a strong field of entrants. The competition was the culmination of a partnership between UL and the Irish Examiner, in which coursework produced by UL journalism students was broadcast to a national audience. Mr McNamara said he had chosen to focus on the Rescue 116 story for a number of reasons: “Obviously the scale of this unfathomable tragedy rocked the country and headlined the news for some time, for me there was something closer to home. I have family and
friends involved with both the Coast Guard and the RNLI and I know first hand the dedication and the risks involved while volunteering for these organisations. “This is something I hoped to show the public through this video. The project itself gave me some invaluable experience with regards to editing, interviewing and filming and I feel that I have learned a lot from it,” he continued. Head of Journalism at University of Limerick Dr. Fergal Quinn congratulated Mr McNamara on the win, adding that he was delighted at the standard of work showcased. Irish Examiner digital editor, Dolan O’Hagan, congratulated all who contributed to the
competition and said he hoped it was the start of an ongoing collaboration. Watch the video (http://www.irishexaminer.co m/video/news/rescue-116the-people-behind-the-recovery-449636.html) Cillian Sherlock, a fourth year student of UL’s BA in Journalism and New Media programme was named the winner of this year’s UL/Live 95FM radio journalism competition this week. The winning entry was a radio package dealing with the issue of drug driving. At the award presentation, Mr Sherlock said: “I’m delighted to receive this award from Live 95fm. It’s a fantastic way to finish up my degree
in Journalism and New Media at UL. My radio modules at UL enabled me to create a piece that would both inform and educate the audience on an issue which is of growing concern”. As the first prize recipient, Cillian received €500 from Live 95FM. Cillian, from Claremorris, County Mayo, has just completed his final year at University of Limerick and is due to graduate with a BA in Journalism and New Media later this summer. He is currently working at Independent.ie on a Google fellowship. UL journalism students secured three of the five fellowships offered to journalism students across Ireland in 2017.

A top prize for Ballinrobe’s Youth Booth in Irish Cancer Society X-HALE Youth Awards
Left to right, Cloda McManus, Cristija Seke, Victoria Petrova, Julia Dubaj, Megan Crisp and Maggie Farley from The Youth Booth, Ballinrobe pictured receiving their prize from John McCormack, CEO of the Irish Cancer Society, at the X-HALE Youth Awards 2017 in Dublin recently.
T
HE Youth Booth Ballinrobe has been awarded the prize for Best Smoke-Free Generation Message at the Irish Cancer Society X-HALE Youth Awards 2017. The group scooped the award for its short film “Ditch the Fags”, which was showcased at the recent event in the Odeon Cinema in the Point Village in Dublin. Over 300 young people from 40 youth and community groups came together to showcase their antitobacco films and projects which they have created to contribute towards establishing Ireland’s first smoke-free generation. While the rate of smoking has seen declines in recent years, 8% (or approximately 40,260) of children and young people between the ages of 10 and 17 are using tobacco. The Irish
Cancer Society has said is it vital that this generation of young people give the biggest blow to cancer possible – by not starting to smoke or by getting support to quit. Kevin O’Hagan, Cancer Prevention Manager at the Irish Cancer Society said: “I would like to congratulate The Youth Booth Ballinrobe on winning their prize and for making a positive impact on their health and that of their peers. They have been recognised at this awards ceremony for exceptional effort in their project. “We need to look at what The Youth Booth and the rest of the #TheXGeneration are saying. They can be Ireland’s first smoke-free generation and they are telling us in their own way about the dangers of smoking and they are confident enough
to share this message with their peers. They are educated on the issue of smoking and are refusing to let their health be affected by tobacco.” X-HALE is an initiative of the Irish Cancer Society which aims to empower young people to work towards reducing smoking among their generation, by raising awareness about the dangers of smoking and encouraging their peers to be smoke free. Since its inception in 2011, X-HALE has awarded over €140,000 to youth groups and organisations through X-HALE to create smoking related community awareness film projects since the initiative started over seven years ago. For further information on X-HALE visit www.cancer.ie/xhale and to watch the X-HALE entries visit www.cancer.ie/xhale2017.
Leitrim girl goes through to National Baking Finals
R
egional baking finals are taking place throughout Ireland this July as teen’s battle it out to become the National Junior Baking champion. It is wonderful to see such an interest in baking and a Leitrim girl has performed brilliantly to date. Jessica Doherty, aged 13, from Melvin Foróige Club, in Leitrim, took one of the two top places in Saturday’s regional competition in Sligo meaning she will get to compete in the National finals. These will take place at the National Ploughing Championships in Screggan, Tullamore from 19th-21st September 2017. At the finals participants will be further put to the test by baking in front of a live audience. The theme of the Aldi Foróige Baking Competition for 2017 is Lemon Drizzle
Cake. Hopeful teens have already baked their creation at the county level over the last few months and have taken the county title to compete in the current regional bake-offs. The winner’s cake will be put on-sale nationwide in Aldi stores next year and they will receive a €1,000 bursary to help them on their baking journey as well as a trip for their local Foróige group to Delphi Adventure Centre in Co. Mayo. Sean Campbell, CEO of Foróige said “this competition gives budding baking enthusiasts a unique chance to develop their craft. I can’t think of a better opportunity for a junior baker than bringing a product to market with a supermarket giant like Aldi. I want to thank Aldi for their continued support of
Foróige’s work and helping to provide a platform for young people to explore
their abilities, learn about the world of food and showcase their talents.”

The west’s awake as Castlebar claims its second life-changing euromillions jackpot winner!
A
grocery convenience shop in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, has emerged as the seller of the recent spectacular winning €29 million EuroMillions Jackpot ticket. The Garryduff XL Store, of Pound Road, Castlebar, sold the magic Quick Pick ticket which scooped a lucky player a life-changing windfall. Incredibly this is the second EuroMillions Jackpot win for Castlebar, and the 11th EuroMillions Jackpot win in Ireland since it began in 2004. And it brings to over €1 billion the total Irish EuroMillions winnings to date. In April 2014 a jackpot prize worth a massive €15 million was claimed on a ticket sold in Staunton’s Costcutter Express in Castlebar. On that occasion the winner did not go public. The ecstatic owner of Garryduff XL Stores, Umesh Kumar, said he could not believe it when he was contacted by the National Lottery to say he had sold the golden ticket. “We had no idea at all. We are all thrilled here at the news. It is a great boost for the area and we are delighted for the winner whoever it is. It will take a while for this to sink in.” Mr Kumar is originally from near
New Delhi in India and he moved to Ireland in 2006 to study an MBA in Dublin. He is married to Rosalie and they have a two-year-old son Arjun. He employs four staff in his store. “I love it here and business has been going well since I took over the shop in 2015. This win will put us on the map.” The National Lottery has confirmed it was contacted by the holder of last Friday’s €29 million EuroMillions jackpot yesterday, but it is not known yet when the new multimillionaire(s) will come to the National Lottery headquarters to claim the prize. They have 90 days to do so. The contact came after a weekend of speculation as to who the winner of the life-changing amount is. Confirming the name of the winning shop National Lottery Chief Executive, Dermot Griffin, said today: “This is very exciting news but it is important that the winner is given the time and space to make arrangements and to let the news sink in. This is an incredible amount of money to win, and we have advised the winner to get independent financial and legal advice. We are looking forward to handing
over the winning cheque in our Winners Room in the next week or so. And we are delighted for Umesh and his staff who sold this ticket.” Mr Griffin said there it is definitely a case of the “luck of the Irish” when it comes to EuroMillions, “Not only do we now have our 11th EuroMillions Jackpot winner but we have 14 winners of EuroMillions Plus worth €500,000 so far this year. Every week in Ireland we have around 100,000 players who win a cash prize on EuroMillions.” Here is the roll call of the lucky ten Irish EuroMillions winners to date: 1. July 2005: Dolores McNamara from Limerick, was Ireland’s first and biggest EuroMillions winner scooping over €115 million. 2. July 2008: A lucky ticket bought in Carrick-on-Suir in Co. Tipperary won a player €15 million jackpot. 3. June 2009: A family syndicate shared the jackpot with a British winner, taking home over €29.4 million. 4. June 2013: A winning ticket sold in Beaumount, Dublin, shared a jackpot worth over €93 million. 5. September 2013: A young man from the South East shared a jackpot of over €25 million with a player in Spain, taking home over €12.8 million. 6. April 2014: A jackpot prize worth €15 million was claimed on a ticket sold in Castlebar, Co. Mayo. 7. September 2014: An €86.7 million jackpot was won by a syndicate from Dublin (private). The ticket was sold in Centra, Ballybrack, Co. Dublin. 8. January 2016: A syndicate of friends won over €66 million, splitting the jackpot of €132,376,632. The ticket was sold in Eason’s store, Fairgreen Shopping Centre, Carlow. 9. July 2016: 22 colleagues from Dublin Bus won the €23.8 million The ticket was sold in O’Hanlon’s Portarlington. 10. January 2017: A Dublin work syndicate claimed the €88.5 million EuroMillions jackpot. The winning ticket was sold at the Applegreen Service Station on the M1 Northbound in Lusk, Co. Dublin.
Sligo’s Glenn Patterson to represent Ireland
S
ligo’s Glenn Patterson has been selected to represent his country at an international rowing regatta to be held at the purpose build rowing course at Strathclyde Park in Scotland on July 22nd this year. This is an annual event where the best club oarsmen and women are selected from Ireland, England, Scotland & Wales and race for their respective nations over the straight 2000m course. Glenn has been selected to race in two boat categories, the men’s open 2x (double scull) and the men’s open 4x (quadruple scull) with other senior oarsmen from around the country. This fantastic achievement marks just reward for the years of dedication and commitment Glenn has shown to his sport of rowing. This year’s training began for Glenn last September with his coaches Tommy Colsh & Molua
Donoghue. A new training regime was adopted for the 2017 season with specific goals in mind. This included a new weights training and rowing machine programme which was followed rigidly through the long winter months; and assistance from Declan Nugent of Avena Leisure, Ballisodare was instrumental during that period. Glenn, over the past 4 years, has had success at every rowing regatta around the country with the exception of the annual national championships. He continues to chase that elusive national title and, together with Avena Leisure, Sligo sports partnership and the support of the people of Sligo through various fundraising efforts, a new racing boat was purchased this year in an effort to help him achieve this goal. The national championships
are held at the national rowing centre at Inniscara lake in Cork from 13th – 15th July this year. Glenn’s attitude to his sport is the main contributor to his success. He is an inspiration to the younger rowers coming through the club and regularly assists the coaches in the club by putting the new recruits through their paces on the beautiful Garavogue River which flows from Lough Gill in a picturesque setting into Sligo town. Rory Clarke, Ray Murtagh, Molua Donoghue & Tommy Colsh, who form the committee & coaching staff of Sligo rowing club, and all the parents & rowers involved at Sligo rowing club would like to wish Glenn the very best in his achievement in becoming Sligo’s first international oarsman and wish him well at this year’s national championships.

“I’m going to be honest, my Mam passed away 30 years ago from asthma. So I guess I’m just doing it for Mam” said David Huane, the Ballindine 4 Mile Road Race organiser. This year is the race’s 9th anniversary and will take place on Sunday 16th July at 12 noon in Ballindine, Co.Mayo, kindly sponsored by Phillips Menswear. The ‘Guess Your Time’ race gives everyone a chance to be the winner as they predict the time they expect to finish the race. The winner is the participant whose predicted time is closest to their actual time. Each year, the proceeds are donated to a charity and the 2017 charity of choice is the Asthma
Society of Ireland. Kevin Kelly, Advocacy and Communications Manager of the Asthma Society, says “I want to thank David and his family for organising this year’s event for the Asthma Society of Ireland. It is a lovely gesture to dedicate the race to his mother on her 30th anniversary. It is not well known but on average 1 person in Ireland dies each week as a result of asthma. The proceeds from this event and events throughout the year go towards providing asthma education for asthma patients and healthcare professionals, to help combat the 90% of preventable asthma deaths.”
In Mayo, there are currently 12,509 asthmatics. On average, 712 of these go to hospital each year due to their asthma. David says “I know the importance of what the Asthma Society do and hope that people can show their support by joining us on Sunday for a fun day” There will be refreshments after the race and a prize of €300 to be won. Registration fees are €15 for running and €10 for walking and can be done on the day. To avoid delays and to be in with a chance to win a €100 voucher for Phillips Menswear, register online at: http://www.runireland.com/events/b allindine-4-miler-guess-your-own-time
ALONE welcomes homecare consultation but stresses need for comprehensive services ALONE, the charity that supports older people to age at home, welcomes the introduction of a public consultation process on a new statutory homecare scheme announced by Minister for Older People, Jim Daly, today. ALONE also stress that a more rounded home support system should be put in place for older people and carers. CEO of ALONE, Sean Moynihan has said: “We believe in the need to redress homecare but there is also a requirement to treat all parts of an older person’s life. Without a wraparound of services, any new homecare
scheme would fail.” Moynihan continued, “ALONE is focused on the development of wellrounded supports for older people in Ireland. As the ageing population increases, we can expect further demands on supports. It is estimated that approximately 20% of those over 65 already receive a form of support service from the State. While we welcome this move by Minister Daly to establish a new affordable and sustainable homecare scheme, we urge that a comprehensive approach be taken. ALONE also calls on the
Minister to disclose an outlined timeline for the consultation process and how he intends the process to operate.” ALONE is keen to participate in the development of this new statutory homecare scheme and work with all stakeholders to make any new scheme a success and meet the needs of older people. ALONE believes that only with this agenda, the participation of the wider community, and an increase in annual funding, can a significant homecare scheme be sustainable.

All you need to know about Renewable Energy
Solar Water Heating Heating water is the second largest energy use in typical households. Solar water heaters can be a cost-effective way to generate hot water for your home here in Ireland. One square metre of Solar Panels on your roof receives the equivalent of more than 100 litres of oil in free solar energy per year. And as a matter of fact, this is more than in Paris. Ok. But what if the sun is not shining? No problem. A solar water heater not only converts direct sunlight but also indirect sunlight into heat, so it works even when the sky is overcast. True, there will be less solar heat available during the winter, but a back-up heater will boost the water temperature. The result is 100% comfort at all times, with plenty of hot water for a fraction of the cost. Our panels have been fully tested and come with a 10 year Guarantee and are approved for the SEI Greeener Homes Scheme, which means that you can qualify for a grant of € 300 per m2(to max. 12 m2 ) How Solar water Heating Systems work Solar water heating systems include storage tanks and solar collectors. There are two types of solar water heating systems: active, which have circulating pumps and controls, and passive, which don't. Solar water heating systems include two
main items. They are Storage Tanks and Solar collectors. Types of Solar water Heating Systems There are two types of solar water heating systems: • Active, which have circulating pumps and controls, • Passive, which don't. Most solar water heaters require a wellinsulated storage tank. Solar storage tanks have an additional outlet and inlet connected to and from the collector. In two-tank systems, the solar water heater preheats water before it enters the conventional water heater. In one-tank systems, the back-up heater is combined with the solar storage in one tank. Solar Collectors There are two main forms of solar collectors or panels on the market here in Ireland Flat Plate collectors and Evacuated Tube collectors. The main component of ach is the absorber, which absorbs solar radiation and converts it into heat. In a plate collector, the absorber is in the form of a flat, black plate in a shallow metal container covered with one or more layers of transparent glass or plastic; either air or a liquid is circulated through the cavity of the container. Heat is directly transferred from the absorber to the circulating liquid (air,

water) The absorber in an Evacuated tube collector consists of a relatively narrow strip of copper with a selective black coating bonded to a single copper tube. The tube contains a special fluid which evaporates when heated. This vapour rises and transfers heat to the water circulating in the systems primary circuit. Evacuated tubes are more efficient than flat plate collectors; consequently they take up less space. They are, however, more expensive that flat plate. Generally speaking, to produce a given amount of hot water, Whether using flat plate or evaporated tubes, the installation costs will be roughly the same. Rainwater Harvesting Rainwater Harvesting Systems In Ireland, daily water consumption rate per person is 148 litres. However, only 67 litres of this is used for personal hygiene and nutritional consumption. This means that approximately 80 litres of water per person on a daily basis do not need to be high quality but while using water from the utility for all your daily water requirements you are paying the same amount of money for each litre of water. The water you are using for washing your car, watering the plants and toilet flushing is treated to the drinking water quality. It is possible to use rainwater harvesting systems for such needs. They are widely used in homes, farms, public buildings such as schools, hospitals, and hotels and many other facilities. How do they harvest water? Its early versions were simply gathering the rainwater in a tank. Today, our rain harvesting systems are much more improved and efficient with the addition of a couple of elements, such as pressure vessels, pumps and filters. A typical rainwater harvesting system has the following elements: • A surface to catch water, this is generally found on your roof • Channels for water transport from catch surface to the storage tank • Filters to filter particles • Pumps and pressure vessels to pressurise water and keep water pressurised. • Water storage tank to store ready-to-use water.
• Piping system to transport water to the points of consumption. What will be your savings? This is dependent on many factors. The most important one is, which part Ireland you live in. This is important to know the annual rain figures for that area. Also the surface you will use for catching the water plays an important role in the calculations. When some average values are taken, you can save about €1 for each square meter of your horizontal water catch surface annually. Rainwater harvesting systems pay for themselves in a short time, generally a few years. Installation and Maintenance of rainwater harvesting systems Rainwater harvesting system design and installation needs experience and training. Systems are designed to occupy minimum space especially in your garden. For this purpose, underground tanks are used. The pipe system is connected to the intended points of use. Pressurizing and pressure maintaining elements in the systems allow you to have constant water pressure in your rainwater pipe system. Rainwater harvesting system elements are made of durable materials and have a simple technical structure. These two features result in minimum maintenance requirements for the overall system. You may only need to clean filters from time to time and maybe some infrequent maintenance may be required for pumps.

Choosing the Right Kitchen for Your home
T
he kitchen is the work horse of the home and these days needs to be so much more than a place for cooking, chilling, freezing and laundry. Of all the rooms in the home it can be the most expensive to design, refit and decorate because it requires appliances as well as furniture - at the very least a cooker, fridge-freezer, oven
and hob and washing machine. And because the kitchen is multifunctional, it is also the room that takes the most planning and leg work. To achieve a dream kitchen, one that is not only functional and practical, but beautiful too, requires research, budgeting and oodles of design inspiration...
Unit 10B Old Dublin Road Business Park 071-9304960
Decide on your kitchen layout and appliances Unless you are lucky enough to be building your own house or planning a new kitchen extension, your kitchen layout will be decided for the most part by the dimensions of your room; the smaller the space, the fewer your choices of kitchen layout. Smaller houses and
flats with kitchenette-style areas built off single living/dining rooms tend to house galley, L-shaped or Ushaped kitchens. But designing a dream kitchen can be easiest and least expensive in smaller spaces like this. There is no agonising over which appliances will go where as there tends to be little choice. And that is the joy of the small kitchen: it virtually designs itself. Another is that a small kitchen allows you to use quality materials that would be too expensive in a larger space. Once you have decided on the position of your fridge-freezer, sink, washing machine, cooker, hob, dishwasher and microwave you can give the remaining space over to wall and base unit storage. You’ll also need to spend time researching appliances to find the models that work for you – freestanding or built-in oven; electric, gas, induction or domino hob; washing machine or washerdryer/tumble dryer? In larger spaces you will have the luxury of thinking about a kitchen beyond the basic functions of cooking, chilling, freezing and washing. You may be able to design a fully open-plan space that opens out to the garden and across your ground floor, incorporating dining, lounging, TV watching and entertaining and homeworking or study – in short, a fully multifunctional family space. In larger homes it might even be possible to remove some basic kitchen functions to other rooms by creating a separate larder, laundry or utility room.
Plan your kitchen storage There is, let’s face it, an awful lot of stuff to store in a kitchen: food, drink, tableware and cutlery, glassware, pots and pans, utensils, cookware, linens, small appliances such as food mixers and blenders, cleaning and laundry products, refuse and recycling bins - all manner of paraphernalia. If you are budgeting for a small space you are likely, therefore, to want to squeeze in as many units as possible. Remember that drawer units offer more storage capacity than cupboards, always fit the insides of doors with wire shelving for storing smaller items such as medicines or herb and spices, and make use of carousel mechanisms in corner units. Free up cupboards by keeping oftenused items that won’t gather dust, such as plates and bowls, on open shelving and by using hooks to hang up pans from wall or ceiling
racks. Make sure everything you are storing away is organised and easy to access. Regularly spend time sorting through cupboards and drawers – the better organised your bits and bobs are, the less space they will take up. A larger kitchen space allows you to consider additional features such as kitchen islands and peninsula units, butcher’s blocks, glazed wall units, more extensive open shelving, larder units or kitchen dressers. Or the ultimate luxury in kitchen designing – deciding to leave a space empty. As you plan your storage, factor in your lighting too, so you will always have directed, functional lighting over worktops as well as gentler mood lighting elsewhere. Choose your kitchen style, materials and colours Our choice of kitchen style, colour and materials can be very personal, but, alongside budget, will be influenced by the type of home we live in (country cottage, Victorian or Georgian townhouse, modern flat, 1930s semi). Think about what would best suit your own home. This isn’t necessarily an interior design style that reflects the period of your house, but can be a conscious decision to do something very different – many owners of period properties choose noholds-barred modern kitchens. Most people will go for one of three broad styles: traditional, modern or country and most kitchen
manufacturers design their ranges of kitchen cabinetry accordingly. Within each of these core styles there are, of course, all sorts of permutations to make decisions around – fitted, freestanding, Shaker, rustic, painted, hi-gloss, retro. However as kitchens are expensive rooms to fit, remember that whatever style you choose needs to last far longer than the looks you might choose for other rooms in the house. Go for a broader look, rather than something that might be considered a narrower, more passing interiors trend. For example, rather than the recent trends for monochrome, black or colourful designs, there may be more kitchen mileage in classic looks such as white, wood finish, and the traditional muted paint shades of blue, green or grey. Whatever style you choose, it will inform the materials you use throughout the kitchen. If you go for a country-style kitchen chances are you will have painted units, a ceramic butler sink, oak worktops, stone or brick flooring, a butcher’s block and range cooker. Essentials for a modern kitchen would probably include handle-less gloss units, stainless-steel sink and appliances, composite worktops and marble flooring. So the style you choose will, to a large extent, determine the choices you make around the colours and materials that will constitute your dream kitchen.

Decorating Kid’s Rooms
F
or a child, a bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It's a spot to do schoolwork, play games, rough-house, read, daydream, visit with friends and stockpile toys. As you plan out your child's bedroom, you'll need a space that serves all those functions — and is comfortable and practical for several years to come. The ultimate experts on what kids like best are kids themselves, so get them involved in the design process by letting them help with selections. That being said, children's preferences change often, so use accessories and colors that be easily replaced. Overall, whether you're decorating a playroom, bedroom or nursery, be sure to think about fun, growth and practicality. How do I decorate a playroom? A playroom should be very lively and inspirational, so get creative with your color and furnishings. A wall mural or wall decal is a great way to incorporate playful design, while a chalkboard wall lets kids produce their own masterpiece. Try using fun furnishings, like beanbag chairs or floor cushions, and if you want to splurge, add in unique elements like a climbing wall, slide
In one of the children's rooms of this home designed by David Bentheim, the bed is set into an alcove, which is studded with LED lights to resemble stars.
can watch tv or play a musical instrument. How do I decorate a kids bedroom? When designing a child's room, think about color, color and more color. Incorporate a favorite hue on the walls or bring in bright accents, but stick with neutral furniture that doesn't need to be swapped out as interests change. While the furniture should be appropriate for your child's age, it also should be something that can grow with him or her. Get full-sized dressers and cabinets that can last through the school years, and consider a bunk bed, which is great to share with siblings. As they get older and no longer want to share a room, you can add a desk underneath the top bunk. With so many toys and clothes, storage is key. Add built-ins if you can, but cubbies and shelves are also great for those on a budget.
This sweet, galleried play area designed by Trine Miller, has the dual function of creating an adventurous play space, while also keeping toys contained and out of view
Think creatively when it comes to arranging furniture, especially in a shared children's room. Beds don't have to be side by side
or swing. Because it is a multifunctional room, use space smartly. Install built-in cabinets and shelves for much-needed toy storage, and include a desk or work table for homework and coloring. A craft station
is a great way to get those creative juices flowing, or consider a small snack area with microwave and mini fridge. Divide the space into zones so that quieter kids can draw or read while louder, more active kids
How do I decorate a nursery? In the younger years, safety is crucial. Review the literature on all surfaces and products, and get up to date on product recalls before you make major purchases. Once you've done your homework, it's time to start buying. Of course, a crib and changing table are key purchases, while a rocking chair, baby swing and extra dresser are helpful additions. Be careful with adding too much furniture though; you want to be sure to leave some floor space for your young one to learn to crawl and walk. When it comes to color, don't feel the need to go with just standard pink and blue. Yellow, brown and green are all great gender neutral palette choices and will make your nursery stand out from others.

The Beginners’s Guide to home renovation During a major renovation, be prepared for a raft of specialists battering on your front door. These include engineers and building surveyors, and the ever-increasing list of consultants required by local councils, such as sustainability experts. Visit your local council for a full list. Consider the cost of rental fees if you move out during the renovation. Moving out could save you money - and sanity. When the owners move out, the house can be fully gutted and will run on minimal electricity and no hot water. Renting also saves time and money because tradesmen don't have to pack up each day.
F
orewarned is forearmed, especially when it comes to renovating. Prepare yourself with lessons learned, expert advice and our best money-saving tips - before you pick up the sledgehammer! 1. Getting started Avoid: Starting the renovation before getting a feel for the house Solutions: Live in a house through as many seasons as possible before you start any major changes unless the building is about to collapse! Rather than attempting to design your own blueprint, the priorities in the early stages should be a schedule of your needs and wishes, a master plan of how to achieve them and a budget,. A bigpicture vision can prevent extra costs on electrical and structural work. Design and decorative elements are equally important. Slowly gather inspiration for your mood board - a batch of pages from magazines, fabric swatches, design postcards and furniture brochures - to convey your visual passions. 2. Assembling a team Avoid: Hiring a team without comparing prices and personalities Solutions: Cheapest isn't always best when putting together the team - a person's workmanship, commitment, management experience, communication skills and availability should be the major priorities. You'll save in the long-term with someone who can take educated shortcuts, work faster and who will make less errors. A building designer or draftsperson can keep costs down for a simple house extension, but for a new build or an
extensive reno, an architect is the ticket. They can advise you on everything from design, planning and managing the budget to designing the interior, landscaping and even checking the builder's invoices. An architect's fees are around 10-15 per cent of the project value. To find a local architect, visit the Institute of Architects' website at www.architecture.ie. They're also experienced in dealing with local councils. Many architects will recommend their regular builders; talk to at least three to compare packages and check references. Rather than just relying on the builder's references, talk to the owners themselves. Prospective trades people need to show home warranty insurance and public liability insurance. Be sure that your trades people are covered for
workers' compensation by their employer. 3. Controlling the budget Avoid: Being unprepared for an unexpected budget blow-out Solutions:While an architect can estimate upcoming costs, a quantity surveyor will supply a more detailed price expectation. The break down the building into elements, such as floors and walls, and amend the cost depending on the materials. Keep a log of all products and materials used and changes made each decision to upgrade adds up and could blow your budget. To help minimise risks, a contingency plan of 10-15 per cent extra budget is imperative. All sorts of things can go wrong - latent conditions get discovered and they usually cost money..
4. Getting the timing right Avoid: Thinking that the renovation will run on time and to schedule Solutions: Timing is crucial. "If you haven't ordered a kitchen before November, it probably won't be installed until February. You can be guaranteed that the factory will shut down over Christmas, making the kitchen at least a month late. Builders and architects take time off for holidays throughout the year. Ask them to confirm their vacation plans early on. Another slow down can be the winter season. Builders are entitled to extensions for winter weather during the early stages of the construction. Aim to complete construction before January: The team can keep working on the interiors throughout the bad weather 5. Starting the demolition Avoid: Failing to show the construction plans to your neighbours before lodging the development application Solutions: Consider showing site plans, elevations and shadow diagrams to directly affected neighbours before applying to the council. Loss of privacy and overshadowing are common complaints, so consider the impact your design may have early to speed up the planning approval process. After this hurdle, you, your
architect or building designer can lodge the development application with the council before building commences. Patience is a virtue, since councils are notoriously slow, and if complaints are lodged, you may have to attend council meetings. Most councils require a construction certificate for building work to start. Once done, the blissful sounds of jackhammers can begin. 6. Keeping costs down Avoid: Project managing a full renovation yourself - it can cost more Solutions: An architect can be commissioned for different stages, starting with the plans (preliminary sketches, briefing a structural engineer and a quantity surveyor), the design development stage (preparation of the final design and documentation required for council submissions) and contract administration (tendering, signing of building contracts, site inspections and monitoring the builder's progress). For a reasonably simple renovation, it may be possible to project manage the final stage yourself. As a back-up, hire an architect on an hourly rate; they understand the specifications, can solve difficult issues with the builder and spot flaws a layperson would never notice. Source fittings, lighting and decorative elements yourself. Time and research is key to achieving a high-end look for a fraction of the cost. You can often save money by negotiating all the furniture from one place, or offering to pay cash in exchange for a discount. 7. Adopting an eco attitude Avoid: Assuming eco-sensitive options are more expensive Solutions: Incorporating green solutions into a design in the early stages may have an initial added cost, but they will more than pay for themselves in the long run. By installing solar panels, you can

Five reasons most diets fail W
e’ve all been there. Desperately wanting to lose those few extra pounds, or in some cases a lot of extra pounds, but no matter which diet we try we always seem to end up where we started from. It’s frustrating and demoralizing and it tastes like failure. But it doesn’t have to be this way, says Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an American based obesity expert and the author of The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours Work. “If there was a quick fix we’d all be skinny,” he points out. “The more permanent the weight loss needs to be the more permanent the lifestyle changes need to be.” So what’s preventing us from getting there?
tion. “As a consequence, exercised-based approaches to weight management tend to get disappointing quite quickly,” he says. “That’s why gyms are busy in January and empty in March.”
1. We think dieting has to be painful “The past 60 to 80 years of modern day dieting has been predicated upon the notion that dieting success is about suffering,” says Dr. Freedhoff. “It suggests that people struggling with their weight don’t deserve to eat like normal
people or use food for comfort and celebration. Instead they’re only supposed to use food for fuel and shut off the other normal uses. This doesn’t work.”
of evolution which has made our bodies really good at securing calories simply because we want to get into a particular clothing size is folly.”
2.We under-eat Trying to starve yourself into thinness doesn’t work either. “Hunger is a very powerful physiological force,” says the diet doctor. “It’s second only to breathing for survival. To think we can fight 100 million years
3. We over-exercise “People undertake exercise regimes that are truly ‘regimes’,” he says. “People see these shows on TV where they suggest that exercise to the point of throwing up is desirable. Again, that is not a lifestyle – it’s a life sentence.” People also tend to overestimate the number of calories they’re burning, which can lead to frustra-

4.We eat out too often and consume too much processed food “We’ve been duped by the food industry and our own willingness to believe you can find health and weight loss in restaurants or boxes, but it doesn’t work that way,” he says. “We, as a society, seem to be using restaurants and processed foods like our grandparents used refrigerators and the produce drawers.” Dr. Freedhoff says he sees far more people who eat out three to four times a week than he does people who eat out three to four times a month. That equates to weight loss woes. “The calories we consume in restaurants are non-intuitive and astronomical in many cases. That salad you order might have more calories
than a person burns in an entire day.” 5. We don’t think about the calories we’re drinking “People are usually aware that sugar-sweetened beverages can be problematic but they don’t always think about the cream and sugar in their coffee,” he says. “And people really don’t like to think about alcohol because they enjoy it so much, but red wine has double the calories of Coca Cola and that’s something you can’t ignore if you’re trying to lose weight.”Best advice he can offer? “Weight management, in general, needs to be about people striving to live the healthiest lives they can enjoy — and not the healthiest lives they can tolerate. They need to make lifestyle changes, that are significant and enjoyable, but not severe. And that can be challenging when you’ve got a society telling you they need to be severe to work.”
