OME discussion has taken place in recent days about the introduction of unemployment entitlements for the self-employed. The Department of Social Protection announced that it is asking 20,000 self-employed people what new benefits they would most like to receive from pay-related social insurance (PRSI) reforms planned in future budgets. The self-employed will be asked whether they would be willing to pay more PRSI in return for access to greater benefits, or whether they would prefer to maintain the status quo. This discussion is timely since recent figures from the CSO show the number of self-employed people in the state rose by 325,000 or 5.5% since 2010, indicating a greater willingness to go it alone. This number would most likely increase faster, and entrepreneurship incentivised if a greater measure of protection was introduced for risk-takers. However, the statistics, thankfully, also reveal that the number in the (more protected) employed sector increased by 2.4% in the first quarter of 2016, compared with the same period in 2015 and now stands at just under 2 million. That’s an increase of 46,000 over the year. In fact, the numbers employed have increased by 84,500 or 4.5% since 2010. The indications are that people are also working longer; the average usual hours worked in the first quarter of 2016 was 35.8 hours, an increase of almost 1% from the same period in 2010. Youth to the fore at Mayo-Manchester Tradfest James Keegan, star of Lord of the Dance, was on hand to launch the festival, which was centred in Ballina, along with Manchester’s Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band. Teenagers from Atlantic Rhythm Productions and Attymass Youth Choir also participated as well as local Sean Nos dancers Tommy Stenson and Laura Ganley. Even Irish dancers from Italy
performed at the sell-out closing concert at Enniscoe House near Crossmolina, which included Atlantic Rhythm and other guests. n what was probably the busiest week of the year in the North-west the MayoManchester annual Tradfest took centre-stage with seven days of music and culture, linking in with many other local festivals and events. Festival “boss” Tony Hennigan was delighted with the way the week unfolded though “it was a hectic schedule with two packed out events nearly every day, in addition to other fringe
events. Tony, of course, is based in Manchester, but has strong Attymass connections. The Mayo-Manchester theme intermingled with a number of local events, principally the Giro De Baile Cycle, Siamsa Sraide in Swinford, the Attymass Gathering, Taste of Mayo Festival, Lahardane Titanic Society, In Humbert’s Footsteps and the event that attracts thousands from far and near, the Bonniconlon Show and Gymkhana.

Ewe won’t believe it! New world record for Donegal man Donegal man Ivan Scott certainly didn’t allow anybody pull the wool over his eyes recently when he set a new world record after shearing 867 wool lambs in just nine hours. The Kilmacrennan man definitely wasn’t a sheep at the wheel when he started his epic ordeal at 5am on Sunday morning. By the time of completion,
he managed to finish five rounds of shearing. A cynic would say the poor man must be a mutton for punishment. Scott, a nine-time Irish champion, has now beaten the previous record that was held by New Zealender’s Don King by a solitary lamb. It puts paid to a contention from
anybody that thinks sheep sharing is easy work because Scott had to trim some 97 sheep every hour in order to break the nine year old record. The Donegal man is no stranger to breaking records because in April he also set a new Guinness World Record for the fastest time to shear a sheep in just 37.9 seconds.

ollowing the huge success of RTE’s The Nathan Carter Show last Christmas, top Irish country music entertainer Nathan Carter is filming four shows for RTE this summer . . . and yes, those show recordings will be on your doorstep, in Sligo. His natural talent in front of the camera has inspired RTE to commission a

astlebar’s Caroline Gilroy is among 100 budding accountants to be given the opportunity to earn while they learn as Ireland's first-ever accountancy apprenticeship programme gets under way in September. The new apprenticeship will address the 66% increase in demand for qualified accounting technicians last year, say Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI), who showcased the programme at an Open
Day in Dublin recently. Major accountancy firms throughout Ireland and ATI are offering both young school leavers and mature students a unique pathway towards an Accounting Technician qualification, with the opportunity to progress to Chartered Accountancy. Apprentices will spend four days working with the employer and one day in college during the two-year course,
which is due to begin on September 12. The graduates can then continue their studies to become a fully qualified Chartered Accountant. The ATI are holding a further Open Day at their offices at Chartered Accountants House, 47-49 Pearse Street, Dublin 2, on Tuesday August 23 from 3pm, where interested applicants can find out more about the jobs on offer, the companies and colleges taking part and the qualification itself. The inaugural Accounting Technician Apprenticeship will be based in colleges in Cork, Dublin, Monaghan and Wicklow, subject to approval. ATI, Ireland's leading professional body for Accounting Technicians, is extending the programme into the Republic of Ireland after two successful years in Northern Ireland, which saw student numbers rise from 27 at two colleges to 90 in all six regional colleges. "This course is perfect for students who recently sat their Leaving Cert, and are looking to get straight into the workforce and get on a path to a career in accountancy,” says Richard Mullins, ATI’s Marketing and Digital Media Manager. “It is also a fantastic opportunity for mature learners and working people who now want to move into an accountancy role.” This year, the course will be delivered in Blackrock Further Education Institute, Rathmines College of Further Education, Bray Institute of Further Education, Monaghan Institute and Cork College of Commerce.Visit accountingtechnicianapprenticeship.ie for more details.

Fine Gael’s Drumshanbo convention debacle still lingers T EN months have elapsed but the Fine Gael party continues to be haunted by events at their selection convention in Drumshanbo last year. Former Deputy John Perry, former Senator Michael Comiskey, along with Manorhamilton native Sligo Mayor Hubert Keaney have all written letters of complaint to the Fine Gael Party about issues arising out of the convention to select General Election candidates. Deputy Tony McLoughlin and Carrick's Gerry Reynolds were selected at the convention, but accusations about the “chaotic” nature of the event and “irregularities” with the running of the convention arose after the result. Former Deputy Perry brought a High Court action against the party about the convention, which was settled out of court, costing the party an estimated €500,000 in legal fees. Perry was added to the ticket, but failed to hold on to his seat. The party have recently received submissions of complaints from the three as part of its review into this year's General Election. Michael Comiskey said he hopes the party looks into the submissions and that “lessons will be learned from it.” In his submission to Fine Gael recently Deputy Perry complained about the

running of the Drumshanbo convention and also outlined that some party trustees were “kept in the dark” about a letter sent prior to his High Court case by General Secretary Tom Curran who had concerns about the handling of the convention. The letter was not disclosed under discovery to Perry’s legal team. Perry
also told Fine Gael a witness to the case was put under “considerable pressure” not to appear at the trial. When contacted by a local newspaper a spokesperson for Fine Gael said, “This case has been before the courts and has been concluded. As such, we have no further comment to make on the matter.”
Sligo man wanted in UK to face 'blackmail' charge
A SLIGO father of seven could face charges in an English court, including blackmail. Hughie Patrick McGinley (31) was
JOHN FERGUSON LANDSCAPING
brought before the High Court in Dublin last week. The UK is seeking his extradition on foot of a European arrest warrant issued
last February. The court heard that McGinley was arrested in Sligo on Monday evening. The warrant seeking Mr McGinley’s surrender says he is wanted so he can face trial on a number of charges. These include: blackmail, conspiracy to commit blackmail and possession of criminal property. Mr McGinley, the warrant also alleges, was involved with a number of others who have been before the British Courts. Detective Garda David Hanningan told the High Court he arrested Mr McGinley at Ballyfree Halting Site. McGinley accepted he was the person whose extradition is being sought, the detective said. When asked if he knew what the charges contained in the warrant were about, Mr McGinley replied “I do”. In the High Court Mr Justice Donald Binchy, after informing the accused of his rights, said he was satisfied to remand Mr McGinley in custody ‘til August 16th.

Drop in numbers climbing Croagh Patrick A
PILGRIM who suffered a heart attack while climbing Croagh Patrick on Reek Sunday is making a recovery in hospital but his condition could have been more serious had the mountain not been so well serviced by rescue volunteers and medical staff, and he not taken ill close to the a medical tent on the mountain. Estimates are putting pilgrim
traffic on Croagh Patrick mountain at the end of July somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000 on the Sunday, but official figures indicate that overall numbers will be down on previous years; this will be the case even though thousands more made the ascent on Garland Friday and Saturday. The official pilgrimage was abandoned last year due to
horrific weather conditions, but the weather on Sunday was most favourable for the climb. The pilgrimage was led by Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary, who was joined by Archbishop Charles J Brown, Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland. Also present for the occasion, though he did not ascend to the summit, was US Ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency Mr Kevin O’Malley;
Bishop-elect to the Diocese of Killaloe and current Diocesan Secretary, Fr Fintan Monaghan and Fr Charlie McDonnell, ADM Westport, for whom the Reek pilgrimage represents one of the busiest times of the year. Recently appointed to Westport, Fr Patrick Burke, was experiencing his first Reek Sunday as a member of the local clergy. The weather conditions on the mountain were described as ideal for climbing with a light breeze and the rain stayed off for most of the day. Ruth Cunniffe of Mayo Mountain Rescue said the majority of climbers heeded the safety advice of officials and there were 16 casualty reports, but many of the injuries were minor cuts and scratches. Between volunteers from the Order of Malta, Civil Defence, various mountain rescue teams and doctors, nurses and EMTs, the entirety of Croagh Patrick was serviced by medical personnel on Sunday, and this fact alone has been credited with saving one man, who, it is understood, had to twice be resuscitated after he collapsed with a cardiac arrest. The man has recovered since in hospital but his condition could have been more serious had the mountain not been so well serviced by rescue volunteers and medical staff, and he not taken ill close to the a medical tent on the mountain.

€8.75m flood works proposed for Leitrim Flood mitigation works costing in the region of €8.75m are being proposed for County Leitrim as part of the long awaited publication of the Draft Flood Risk Management Plan for the Upper and Lower Shannon. Areas covered by the plan include Carrick-on-Shannon, Mohill, Dromod, Leitrim Village and Drumshanbo with flood risk management works considered for each location. To date two public consultations have been held in each of the areas where the flood risk was considered to be “potentially significant.” However, the numbers attending public consultations for areas like Carrick-onShannon and Leitrim Village, both hit hard during the 2009 flooding and subsequent flood events, has been exceptionally poor, especially when you consider the number of people directly impacted by flooding at the time and the even greater number who have been highlighted as “being at significant risk” of future flooding events. In the two public consultations held in Carrick-on-Shannon in January and November last year, only 33 people attended the consultation in January and just 12 people attended the second event at the end of the year. In Leitrim Village, 15 people attended the first consultation in January 2015 and

only four attended the subsequent consultation 10 months later. Local politicians have welcomed the publication of the draft plan. Deputy Martin Kenny said the publication of the draft report was
welcome but said that it has been “a long time coming.” “You have to ask what has the cost of flooding been for communities in the interim since this whole process began following the 2009 floods?”

Co-op Way Best for Farm Families – Harkin
Independent MEP Marian Harkin was a speaker at the event held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Kilconnell Co-op. Pictured at the event were (L to R): - Tim Broderick, Organising Committee; Louis Cullinane, Organising Committee; Brendan Lynskey, Chairman, Organising Committee, Marian Harkin MEP and Michael Connolly, Mayor of Galway.
T
he co-operative movement rather than the plc structure would best serve the interests of the majority of Ireland’s farmers in the future. This was strongly asserted by Independent MEP Marian Harkin when she spoke at the 50th anniversary celebration of the foundation of Kilconnell co-op in Kilconnel, Co. Galway on Friday, July 29th. While emphasising the importance of paying tribute to the founders of Kilconnell Co-op its development into Mid-West Farmers Co-op and its present membership of Arabawn Coop, it was the future structure necessary to support the preservation of the maximum number of family farms that needed a new focus, she said. “As a strong supporter of the community self help ethos, whether that is the Credit Union, voluntary action or at the larger scale – the cooperative movement – I fully support the slogan espoused by the founder of the agricultural co-operative movement Sir Horace Plunkett that self help is best achieved through mutual help”, Marian Harkin said. She said that it was people joining together and working together that created the real strength of the coop. “While men were to the fore in the development of co-ops like Kilconnell behind them were strong, determined and committed women”, she said. She emphasised that the original philosophy of Sir Horace Plunkett, and supporters, was as relevant today as it was when the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society was founded in 1894. She referred to the benefits which Kilconnell Co-op had brought to three generations in the area in which it operated. “However now is the time to look forward and in a world, and in an industry so affected by globalisation,to ask what support structures are needed by farmers, Marian Harkin said. The plc route was not necessarily the one that would
work best for farmers and their families and it was time to refocus on the genuine co-op movement and on co-ops like Arrabawn, she said. “Following the transition from co-op
to plc in some cases there has been a gradual erosion of farmer influence on the decision of plcs whose focus is on benefit to shareholders rather than on farmer suppliers”, she suggested. It was time for co-ops to enter a new phase of discussion on what structures would best serve the interests of primary producers in the challenging times ahead, she said. “This discussion should be facilitated by the ICOS and should take into account that we will see in the future a reduced number of milk suppliers with bigger herds and an increasing need to influence decisions at processing level”, the Independent MEP said. Due attention also needed to be given as to what would constitute the family farm of the future which would, in terms of numbers, be largely dry stock based, she suggested. “The time for drifting has passed as the uncertainties in farming grow and farm incomesincreasingly depend on uncertain EU support”, Marian Harkin said. There was, however, one certainty and that was that the slogan which inspired the founders of the cooperative movement still held, that self help could best be achieved by mutual help, Independent MEP Marian Harkin concluded.

he Countdown is on for businesses to sign up to the GIY and Cully & Sully ‘al desko’ growing food at work initiative. The food-growing challenge, dubbed “Give Peas a Chance’ enables businesses to not only grow food at work in teams but it enables them to enter a competition to win vouchers to visit Ballymaloe House & Cookery School worth €1,500, and best of all they get to donate a community garden worth €3,000 to a local cause of their choice. Through growing their own food the initiative aims to help people understand where their food comes from and helps to green Ireland’s workplaces, interested parties can sign up to the ‘Give Peas A Chance’ campaign online at www.cullyandsully.com/ourgarden Registered teams will receive a free Grow pack of sowing pots, seeds and
soil plus expert growing tips and training advice from GIY. Participants are asked to log their growing adventures on a dedicated online ‘growing wall’ and share their exploits on social media. The most engaged and green-fingered team will win vouchers to visit Ballymaloe House & Cookery School worth €1,500, and best of all get to donate a community garden worth €3,000 to a local cause of their choice, from a hospice or school to a care home or Men’s Shed. Last year’s challenge was won by Optimal Chiropractic in Cork who donated their community garden to the Cork Association for Autism in Mogeely. A spring gathering earlier this year saw the garden installed and built and it is now of huge therapeutic benefit to the service users. Ben Martin, a chiropractor at Optimal Chiropractors in Cork, was a
member of last year’s winning team. He was attracted to the competition for several reasons. “We often talk to our patients about the need for a healthy lifestyle and the idea of growing your own food ties in with that,” he says. “We had the plants growing on our desks in the office and patients would ask about them. It was a great way of starting a conversation.” Founder of GIY Michael Kelly says, “Along with Cully & Sully, we are big believers in the power of small food growing experiences to transform people’s attitude to food and health and we’re delighted give people that opportunity through the Give Peas A Chance challenge.” To register for the desktop growing challenge, log onto www.cullyandsully.com/ourgarden and Give Peas A Chance. The winning team will be announced in September.

A
group of sporting enthusiasts have raised €12,600 for the Irish Cancer Society after climbing the three mountains of Mayo in one day. The Longest Day Challenge saw the 13 strong group cycle a total of 150km and also climb Mweelrea 815M, Nephin 805M and Croagh Patrick 765M. The trip took 15 hours to complete and although tired and weary following the gruelling trek, which started at 5.30am, the group were elated to have completed the challenge. The Longest Day Challenge was the brain child of Mayo AC Chairman PJ Hall and the group was made up of Breaffy man Kevin Quinn, Robert Coyne from Mayo County Council, John Jennings, Manulla, ultra-runner Pat Staunton from Westport, Castlebar Cycling Club member David Hanahoe, keen mountaineer and cyclist Noel Brady, runner and cyclist Emer McGrath, Rosemary Walsh from
Ballyvary, Fit for Life member Greg Barry, John Geraghty of Mayo AC, Ballina cyclist Edel Gallagher and Galway man Vincent Flanagan. The group decided to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society to support the 40,000 people who will be diagnosed with cancer in Ireland this year. The Irish Cancer Society provides information, support and care to those affected by cancer all over Ireland. Since 2010 the Society has invested €14m in innovative cancer research projects and also funds free support services for cancer patients including Night Nursing, a freephone Cancer Nurseline 1800 700 200, and a Volunteer Driver Service which brings patients to their chemotherapy appointments. In 2015 the Society’s Night Nurses provided 444 nights of care to 97 patients in Mayo, the Volunteer Drivers facilitated 42 journeys for cancer patients and there were 83
calls from Mayo to the helpline. PJ said, “We would like to say a special thanks to everyone who supported us on this mammoth challenge and are delighted that €12,600 has been given to such a deserving charity.” Lorraine Toner, Community Fundraiser with the Irish Cancer Society congratulated the team on the phenomenal success of their fundraiser. “Enormous thanks to the Longest Day Challengers for trekking up not one, but three mountains in Mayo to support the thousands of people affected by cancer in Ireland. The funds you have raised will ensure those going through cancer have the support they need, when they need it.” If you are interested in taking on a challenge in aid of the Irish Cancer Society contact Lorraine for your sponsorship card on 087 793 6499 or by email ltoner@irishcancer.ie

THE RACE IS ON T
he Warriors Run is a famously challenging date on the athletics calendar, and on the social calendar too! Kate Winter meets with some members of the committee to find out more about one of Sligo’s most beloved and longstanding annual events.
When and how did the first Warriors Run come about? 1985 was the initial run. That year was the first time they did the Midsummer Festival, and there were lots of music and arts events. There was the Queen Maeve Festival, done by Aengus McNally, and the Sligo Triathlon was a part of it too. That was to take place on the Sunday, and what was decided was that there’d be a smaller run, a bit of a warm up, for the Friday evening. So they decided to bring it out to Strandhill and use the Queen Maeve element by starting the run at the beach front and finishing it at the top of the mountain. It was named the Warriors Run that year and we never changed the name since, though the run itself has changed a fair bit. How have the run and the festival around it developed over the years? The following year, they extended it so that the runners had to come all the way back down to the beachfront! Besides anything else it was a handier place for a finish line... There was a big buzz about it in the village, with participation growing over the years. It was on our 25th anniversary that we really pushed the boat out with advertising, nationally, online and in running magazines. That year we had around four hundred runners, and from then on it was a
PHOTOS: BRENDA MCCALLION & IAN RYAN
national event, which just grew and grew, To the point where we had to put a cap on it in fact, we can only take the nine hundred runners that we have now, and competition can be fierce for those places! And the festival around it is really spectator led, because there is always such a great buzz. We put on music and bits and pieces around the run itself in the village. There was one year we decided to make it a week long, and we did have events on every night, but it nearly killed us! So we’ve spread a lot of those events across the year, things like sports days, guitar festivals, and the Culleenamore races. Just how challenging is the run? What are the main challenges, or differences between this and your average Irish run? It’s the mountain! It’s because it’s a hill and road race. You’re scrambling up rock at some points and you’ve got a few hundred other people all around you, there’s no denying that’s scary. We’ve changed the route a few times, and now it’s one way, which makes it that bit less hairy. But only the top athletes will actually run the whole thing, most of the others will take their time over certain terrain. It’s certainly a gruelling race. These days you have the likes of Hell And Back, where you’re getting electrocuted and frozen along the way, so it’s not that bad, all things considered! We’re still one of the toughest, but there’s such an element of craic and camaraderie, I think that’s truly what makes the Warriors Run stand out. We have people coming back every single year to do it and there’s a huge local demand for places. That speaks volumes, really.
Micki Murray, Helen Conway and Martina Craig - Photo: Cliodhna McGowan
Any stand out memories or stories from your years on the sidelines? Well John Lenehan was our main man. He won the first three races and on the twenty first anniversary he came back and won it again. He came back for the twenty fifth but he was injured so he only came third. He wrote a book in which the Warriors Run features largely! There was also one year we had a guy come over from Spain and he was booting it, it would have definitely been a course record... Except that it was a bit misty and he took off on the wrong path on the way back down. He was very upset about it, but we gave him a wee bottle of whiskey as compensation! And then there was the Ethiopian fella who won the run without barely breaking a sweat. He arrived back and did a few laps of the Strand Celtic pitch to warm
down when he came back. Apparently all along the route he was admiring the flora and fauna and commenting on what a beautiful place this is! Then he went on the next day to do the Longford Marathon... There was one elderly couple who used to do the run, they were the reason we started our broom wagon. One year around 5.30 in the evening, we knew they were still out there somewhere and we had to go looking for the, We found them on their way back alright, but they had stopped to pick some flowers along the way. Registration has become a bit of an event in itself in Strandhill village, hasn’t it? From listening to feedback we decided to make some changes. From the beginnings, when runners would just line up, first come, first served on the day of the race, to
when we took it all online and there was a mad scramble for tickets, with people all over the country trying to log on and confirm their place, it was always a fast process. But when it really got big and locals were missing out on places, we had to bring in the new system. So we have 150 places available in The Strand Bar and The Draft House, which locals can come along and snag on registration night before we go live online. And yes, it sometimes turns into a bit of a session along the way! Anything new or special to look forward to this year? Given that it’s 1916, we have a little surprise this year, but we can’t tell you what it is! The Warriors Run Takes Place on Saturday 27th August in Strandhill Village

Taking the Stress Out of College L
iving away from home tends to be the toughest adjustment for first-year students. You've had a clear role within your family all of your life: the family comedian, the mediator, maybe the translator. These roles can help you feel like you belong somewhere. It can be hard adjusting to a new place and a new way of fitting in — especially if it seems like your family is doing fine without you. You may feel homesick in your first weeks and months. The first thing to know about homesickness is that it's very common. In fact, just about everyone experiences it at some point in his or her life. It might not feel like it when you're in it, but going through homesickness helps us all grow stronger and builds our coping skills. Homesickness can force you to challenge yourself into trying new ways of meeting
people. Try joining your campus gym and taking exercise classes or studying in public places like libraries and cafes. Try to identify your feelings and fears, and talk about what you're going through. The sooner you deal with these issues, the sooner you'll feel better. If you are homesick, it can help to call, write, or email your parents, other family members, and friends from home to let them know how you're doing and to tell them you miss them. Who else can you talk to? For starters, that person sharing the dorm room with you. Roommates can be great built-in buddies. As first-year students themselves, they're probably experiencing many of the same fears and worries that you're dealing with. But what if you don't get along with your roommate?

Meeting Roommates & Making Friends In some cases, it can be a good thing if you and your roommate aren't much alike. A different perspective on things may be helpful. In fact, it's probably wise not to expect that you'll be best friends with your roommate to avoid disappointment. Katie came to college expecting to be best buddies with her roomies. But over time it felt like the two of them made her the third wheel. With a switch in roommates and a change in attitude about what to expect, she ended up having a blast. Not everyone can switch roommates, though. That's why it helps to start with the idea that you'll respect your differences no matter what. If you and your roomie don't get along, it can help to find someone you do feel understands you — which should be easy on a campus with plenty of people. Giving new students an opportunity to meet is one idea behind freshman orientation. And many schools have student organization nights where all of the campus clubs gather and promote their organizations, so you can meet people with the same interests as you. You'll also meet tons of people in class or in your dorm. If you're really having roommate or friendship troubles, make a stop at the school counseling centre. All colleges and universities have one, and first-year fears are something the counselors know well. The counselors will either talk to you one-on-one or if there is a peer group for students who are feeling like you, you can choose to join it. Talking to others who are in the same situation can be comforting. Some students turn to alcohol, heavy partying, excessive sleeping, smoking, or drugs to deal with their first-year problems. Unfortunately, students who resort to getting wasted all the time to cope with their new
situation often find that too much partying brings lots more problems, like interfering with their ability to keep up with assignments, papers, and exams. In the worst case, it may mean getting in trouble with the college judicial department.
Staying Healthy Away From Home Sore throats, sprained ankles, and wisdom teeth that act up are as common among college students as homesickness. It's very easy, especially in a dorm environment, to catch bugs like the flu. People come in and out of your room all the time, and some of those who are sick may pass it on. And who has time to go home to the doctor when they get sick? With this in mind, universities have created health centers staffed with doctors, nurses, dentists — even nutritionists and counselors — ready to tend to your needs. Check out your student orientation packet or your school's website to find out more information about the health
Prevention Tips It's great to be prepared if you get sick, but better yet, how can you prevent getting sick in the first place? The usual measures, like washing your hands frequently, also apply at college. But you'll also have to think about community bathrooms, shared computer terminals, and cramped living quarters, all of which make germs way too happy. If you spend time in the school computer labs, it's a good idea to carry some antibacterial hand lotion in your backpack. When your roommate gets sick, use a germfighting solvent to occasionally wipe down shared things like doorknobs, telephone receivers, and remote controls. And don't underestimate the power of eating well and getting a good night's sleep. As always, the best defense is a good offense.

Top Tips on Finding Accommodation much information on them sometimes, but it's worth having a look at them every now and again. Word of Mouth Tell everyone you know that you're looking for a place; word of mouth is surprisingly successful. Some places, especially if they're being let through an estate agent, will have To Let signs outside. You should make an appointment to see the flat or house and turn up early. Campus Accommodation A number of Colleges either own their own campus accommodation or have agreements with developers for the provision of campus accommodation. Talk to the college accommodation office for further information. Internet Search Engines It seems that everyone I talk to lately has found their apartment/flat/house on the internet. There are lots of websites to choose from. Try and find out if the one you're using is reputable. Remember accommodation tends to move fast on the internet, but don't let the pressure of finding accommodation lead you to make any rash judgments. Newspapers A good place to start looking for a flat or house is the accommodation section of local and evening papers. Try to buy the paper as soon as it comes out. Notice Boards Accommodation may also be advertised in shop windows or notice boards in supermarkets and colleges. Notice boards can have too
Students' Union Many SU's run an accommodation service. Even if they don't run a service they might be able to give you some good advice on finding accommodation locally. Accommodation Agencies Accommodation agencies are commercial organisations that may charge a fee for helping you find private rented accommodation. They normally deal with more expensive accommodation than newspapers. Before you register with the agency and pay a fee, you should get answers to the following questions: Is the agency licensed? What services are offered for the fee? In what circumstances will you be entitled to a refund? How many landlords who accept rent supplements does the agency have on its list? If you decide to register, make sure you get a receipt for any money you pay. All About Rent Books Who is entitled to a rent book? Every tenant paying rent is legally entitled to have a rent book supplied by the landlord.
This applies to houses rented by private landlords, voluntary bodies, local authorities or employers, if a rent is payable. A rent book is not needed for a holiday letting. When must the rent book be supplied? The rent book must be supplied to the tenant by the landlord at the commencement of the tenancy. What is a rent book? Basically, a rent book is a record of rent and other payments made by a tenant to the landlord. However by law, a rent book must also contain other information related to the tenancy. Usually, a rent book will be in booklet form but it may be in another form provided it contains all the necessary details. What information must be included in the rent book? The rent book must include: the address of the house the name and address of the landlord and of the landlord's agent (if any) the tenant's name the term (i.e. period) of the tenancy the amount of the rent and when and how it is to be paid particulars of any payments, other than rent, to be made by the tenant to the landlord for services, e.g. for heating or piped television the amount and purpose of any deposit paid by the tenant and the conditions under which it will be refunded by the landlord a statement of information which advises tenants of their basic rights the date of commencement of the tenancy an inventory of furnishings and appliances
supplied by the landlord for the tenant's exclusive use. Who makes the entries in the rent book? The landlord must enter the information relating to an individual tenancy in the rent book when it is being given to the tenant. Any subsequent changes in this information must be entered in the rent book by the landlord within one month of the change. This would happen if, for example, there was a rent increase or if the landlord appointed a new agent. The landlord is also responsible for recording the rent and other payments that may be needed if any query arises. How are rent and other payments recorded? Where rent or other payments for services are made in person by the tenant (or by a person acting for the tenant) to the landlord, the landlord must, at that time either: record the payment and sign for it in the rent book, or provide a signed receipt containing full details of the payment. Where payments are made other than in person (e.g. by standing order, bank giro, etc.) the landlord must, within three months, either record and sign for the payment in the rent book or give the tenant a written statement of the payment. Who holds the rent book? The rent book should be held and carefully looked after by the tenant. It contains details of the letting that have been agreed between the tenant and the landlord and provides a record of rent and other payments that may be needed if any queries arise. The tenant is however, obliged to make the rent book available to the landlord so that the landlord can make any necessary changes in it and record rent and other payments.

Carrick on Shannon & Boyle

C
arrick-on-Shannon is Leitrim's County town and is known as Cora Droma Ruisc in the native tongue, which translates as 'the weir of the marshy ridge'. It has the unusual characteristic of being a dual County location, situated in the southwest of County Leitrim and on the border with County Roscommon. Carrick-on-Shannon is an 1 ž hour drive from Dublin or Galway and a 45 minute drive from Sligo or Enniskillen. It is strategically located on the N4 Dublin-Sligo national primary route and well serviced by road and rail. The N4's fantastic infrastructure makes for a stress free drive for commuters to and from Carrickon-Shannon. There are currently 4,500 people residing on both sides of the river in Carrick-on Shannon. Carrick as a Commercial Centre Today, the town's retail landscape is almost complete, with the presence of Tesco, Lidl, Aldi and various other well known retail outlets, drawing shoppers to its hinterland. Carrick has become a progressive centre of commercial activity helped to a large extent by the regions favourable tax designation status. Among its biggest employers are Bank of America and Masonite. The lively market town has a strong retail and services sector, attracting numerous prestigious companies to its soil. Notably; Supervalu, Heatons, Woodies, Bay, Oasis, Menary’s, Supermacs, KFC and Esquires. Carrick-on-Shannon offers great support services with a number of mortgage brokers, insurance brokers and solicitors based in the town. It also is a financial hub with; Permanent TSB, Bank of Ireland, Allied Irish Bank, National Irish Bank, Midlands and Western Building Society and Bank of America operating in the town. Leitrim County Council with the help of funding from the Irish Government
and EU continue to invest in infrastructure which enables both indigenous and foreign-direct investment to locate in Carrickon-Shannon. Participation in 3rd level education from County Leitrim is exceptionally high and the county as a whole boasts an enthusiastic and educated workforce. Carrick-on-Shannon is home to a third level initiative, which offers people a chance to study top quality courses from a number of Universities and IT's across the country on their doorstep. Leitrim County Development Board and the Carrick-on-Shannon Chamber of Commerce work hard to ensure that Carrick-on-Shannon thrives as a commercial hub and an attractive place to live and work. The County Development Board incorporates 'The Economic Development Group', which is comprised of enterprise development agencies and chaired by the County Manager. The group focuses on overseeing the implementation of economic development projects, as well as working on joint initiatives to promote investment, entrepreneurship and job creation in the county. A town seeped in history Carrick-on-Shannon is steeped in history, dating back to the ancient strongholds of the O'Rourkes of Breffni and old time rivals O'Raghnaills of north Roscommon. Carrick-on-Shannon was granted a Royal Charter and named a borough with its own seal in 1607. It's historic background is so strong, that Carrick-on-Shannon has a sign-posted historical walking tour of the town, which allows visitors to discover its historical buildings, in particular The Famine Graveyard, Workhouse and Garden of Remembrance. Leitrim was one of the worst affected counties during the famine, losing a huge proportion of its population to disease, starvation and emigration. The
Garden of Remembrance, which was opened by President Mary McAleese, remembers the thousands of Leitrim people who perished in the great hunger of the late 1840's. Carrick-on-Shannon is a mecca for historical architecture, with preserved buildings from earlier centuries such as The Court House, built in 1821 and the Protestant Church built in 1827. The old Courthouse was the creation of Architect William Farrell, who also designed Colebrook House, Co. Fermanagh, the residence of Lord Brookborough, former Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. It is not now seen to best advantage as
the removal for safety reasons of four massive Doric pillars and the rest of the portico has left it with a rather bare appearance. Since its erection it has been the centre of local government and administration for Co. Leitrim.Leading from the Old Courthouse is the Town Clock and St. George's Terrace. As the name suggests, Carrick-on-Shannon has had a long association with the St. George Family. The St. George Family resided at 'Hatley Manor'. The Georgian home was erected in 1830 and can be seen along the trail. The Costello Memorial Chapel is based on Bridge Street and is the smallest chapel in Europe and the second smallest in the entire world. It was built in the 19th century by a rich merchant named Edward Costello as a memorial and burial vault for his wife, Josephine. The 16 foot long, 12 foot wide and 30 feet high chapel holds the two coffins on each side and covered with slabs of reinforced glass. Carrick-onShannon was the home of Carrick Castle, but sadly no more. However, the remains of Carrick Castle can still be seen on the N4 bypass, near the Carrick Bridge. Carrick as a tourist destination Carrick-on-Shannon is one of the most popular inland resorts in Ireland. Renowned for friendly people, attractive streetscapes, traditional shop fronts, Carrick on Shannon has become a major tourist location for short breaks by Irish and international tourists. Carrick-on-Shannon is surrounded by some of the most beautiful and unspoilt scenery in Ireland; the beautiful Lough Key Forest Park a short distance away and the spectacular glens of North Leitrim.
Nestling on one of the most scenic stretches of the Shannon, Carrickon-Shannon is the boating capital of the inland waterways and home to over 500 boats. It is the gateway to the Shannon -Erne waterway, Lough Key, Acres Lake and Lough Allen. With 750 kilometres of cruising available, Carrick-on-Shannon marinas are full of large flotilla of cabin cruisers and boats of all sizes. A number of boat excursions run from the marinas all over the Upper Shannon and Lower Erne. Carrick-on-Shannon is an anglers paradise with no fewer than 41 lakes within a 10 kilometre radius of the town. There are fantastic fishing opportunities for both the amateur and professional fisherman, looking to do a spot of game and course fishing. Carrick on Shannon has many hotels, award winning restaurants and a wide range of modern and traditional bars and B&Bs. Carrick on Shannon is a key venue for Hen and Stag parties with its vibrant night life and numerous super pubs and discos. Carrick-on-Shannon has fostered great local musical talent and several pubs host lively traditional music sessions, which draw in crowds from all over Leitrim and Roscommon. There is a great pride of place in Carrick-on-Shannon and the community make a big effort to keep Carrick-on-Shannon looking its best. Carrick-on-Shannon won A bronze medal in the 2008 National Tidy Towns Competition and the tidy town committee actively seek to improve the landscapes, streets and street furniture in the town. With lots to see and do, visitors can be assured of a warm welcome and enjoyable stay in the heart of the beautiful northwest.

Excitement as Knock film opens in cinemas EXCITEMENT and anticipation is building up in Knock, and Mayo generally, about a documentary film on Knock Shrine which will feature in cinemas later this month via Knock Airport. The film presents a balanced opportunity for believers to celebrate the phenomenon and those who facilitate its ongoing success, while for sceptics it allows a fascinating glance into the thriving world, and business, of Ireland’s Marian Shrine. Director Aoife Kelleher commented, “It’s very important that every generation interrogate the stories that are passed down to them, and look at them afresh, and decide for themselves whether they should be embraced and preserved or discarded. The story itself is so fantastic that you completely want to get to the bottom of it. You want to know
what it is that they saw and how it was spoken about at the time.” Kelleher continues “It’s a documentary about religion rather than a religious documentary. At the very heart of Knock is this story about an apparition, but in making the documentary we wanted to look at the apparition in its social context and its historical context. We also wanted to find out who was going to Knock and why?” Strange Occurrences in a small Irish Village opens in cinemas on Friday, August 26th, but there will be a special preview for participants and others in Mayo Movie World, Castlebar, on Tuesday 23rd @ 7pm.
Photos by Michael McLaughlin Studios Strange Occurrances in a Small Irish Village is a new Irish feature documentary from Underground Films, the film-makers behind the award-winning feature, One Million Dubliners, who spent more than a year in the Mayo village, examining the phenomenon of the Knock Shrine. On an August evening in 1879 fifteen people in the small village of Knock, Co Mayo, claimed to witness an apparition of the Virgin Mary. We have to appreciate this was a time of extreme poverty and land disputes in Ireland. After
two official inquiries, the village was declared a Marian Shrine. Today, Knock’s 2,000 residents welcome over one million pilgrims annually. Directed by Aoife Kelleher, Strange Occurrences in a small Irish village opens in Irish cinemas on August 26th. The film’s title is derived from the international press coverage at the time. It develops into a fascinating, vibrant portrait of the phenomenon which Knock is today by examining the vast patchwork of individuals and groups involved –
€20,050 capital grant for Involve Youth Services in Ballina Michael Ring, T.D., Minister of State for Regional Economic Development, has said that a €20,050 capital grant for Involve Youth Services Ballina will benefit young people in Mayo. “The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs has announced capital grants for 86 youth projects and organisations around the country and I am delighted that Involve Youth Services Ballina is to receive €20,050 in funding. This capital grant will really boost the services of Involve Youth Services Ballina and so will be of great benefit to young people in Mayo. “The grant is for the installation of disabled bathroom and refurbishment of kitchen.” “Youth projects and organisations such as Involve Youth Services Ballina play a crucial role in supporting young people throughout the country. It is hugely important that the Government continues to acknowledge their work and provide funding so that they can maintain and in some cases expand their services. “We are working hard in Government to ensure that our recovering economy is used in the right way. This means making sure that everyone benefits, particularly vulnerable people or those who need extra support,” concluded Minister Ring.
invalids seeking miraculous cures; the sibling owners of rival religious merchandise shops, the shrine’s Handmaids; and the staff of the Knock Marriage Bureau, a throwback to old matchmaking days that still rings true today. The documentary-makers were both surprised and fascinated to learn about the activities in Knock today and the importance of the Shrine in the life of the area. They focus on the central role of Parish Priest Fr. Richard Gibbons, his ambitions for Knock and his commitment to enticing more US visitors,

Resilient Mayo march on to semi-final THE picture tells the story. It was triumph, emotion and relief, for Mayo, when they overcame Tyrone in a titanic encounter in Croker on Saturday to book a place in an All-Ireland semi-final against Tipperary on August 21st. After so many unconvincing performances in the championship this was a game in which they had their homework done and system in order to outclass their tough Northern opponents, Tyrone... but only just! The result was unexpected but from the outset, when the majestic Aiden O’Shea fired over the opening score from a distance, it was obvious Mayo meant business. However, while they outclassed Tyrone in most sectors, they made life difficult for themselves in the end by opting to retain the ball instead of pushing home their numerical advantage with they had a one-point lead. Indeed it was O’Shea, described afterwards by pundit Joe Brolly as a colossus, who dominated this game, proving how vital he is to Mayo’s cause. Mayo fans are hoping he can retain this form for the
remainder of the championship. But we can’t overlook the performance of defender Lee Keegan either, who, in addition to firing over two unbelievable points, subdued Tyrone’s chief talisman, Sean Cavanagh, throughout the game. While it would be unwise to take Tipperary for granted most Mayo people, at heart, expect their Green and Red army to overcome the southern county with a little to spare; Galway were rudderless and flat-footed a few weeks ago and it is expected that Mayo’s strength, experience and reserves will see them through comfortably. Dublin were just too strong for Donegal who, fielding an off-form Michael Murphy, were unable to break down Dublin’s system (though the Leinster champions finished with just 13 players). Their clash with Kerry will attract most attention on Sunday week. However, Mayo will not fear either team for the final. Their system has begun to click into gear at the right time and fans are looking forward to another epic performance from O’Shea & Co. at the end of September.

Laugh out loud: The healing benefits of laughter and increase motivation, and to the health-care profession to promote and maintain health. But he cautions, “Occasionally, you hear wild claims that laughter therapy cures cancer or a terminal illness. The therapy holds great promise, but there is a danger of creating false expectations.”
A
little chuckle goes a long way when it comes to maintaining your health. Body and soul have a laugh and you’ll get happy! “Laughter is an instant vacation.” When Milton Berle (pictured) said this, he wasn’t too far off, according to some researchers who think laughter is like a wonder drug capable of treating a host of maladies related to stress and lifestyle. “Laughter therapy is making people laugh for healing purposes,” says Albert Nerenberg, a journalist, documentary filmmaker (for instance, Laughlology, in 2009) and laughologist, an expert who lectures on the science, practice and therapeutic effects of laughter. He brings the therapy to the workplace to help relieve stress
Researchers continue to study laughter’s effects and have made some discoveries on how it benefits our well-being. Brain chemicals From a neurological perspective, pioneering studies by Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan of Loma Linda University Medical Center in California have shown that laughing triggers a flood of pleasure-inducing neurotransmitters, like dopamine, in the brain. Low levels of both these brain chemicals are associated with the winter blues and Seasonal Affective Disorder, which affects almost 20 per cent of Canadians. Nerenberg has been using laughter therapy to help treat drug addicts at a residential drug rehab centre located near the Quebec-U.S. border. “Laughing produces dopamine in the brain much in the same way
as cocaine,” he explains, “so you essentially substitute laughing fits for drug addiction, addicting people to a positive behaviour rather than a negative one. They’re after rushes and really don’t care where they get them.” Immune response A depressed immune system is vulnerable to colds and viruses. According to a 2001 study in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, laughter boosts the activity of your system’s natural killer cells and other defences by increasing the number of antibody-producing cells. Laughter enhances the response of disease-killing cells such as gamma-interferon, diseasefighting protein; B cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies; and T cells, key to immune system response. Stress response “We once thought laughter was the opposite of crying, but it’s more appropriate to think of it as the opposite of stress,” explains Nerenberg. He says laughter affects the nervous and endocrine systems by metabolizing stress hormones, which include cortisol and adrenaline, the fight-or-flight compounds released during times of stress. Stress hormones bombard the heart, forcing it to beat as if in a constant state of fight or flight. But laughter appears to reduce the amount of
stress hormones your body produces. Blood flow A good laugh can be good for your heart. Laughter helps expand capillaries, increasing blood and oxygen flow throughout your body. This may help protect against heart attacks and strokes by relaxing constricted blood vessels and promoting relaxation, which may lower levels of cortisol, a hormone known to contribute to high blood pressure, as do constricted blood vessels. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin measured the blood flow of 17 volunteers after watching a comedy or a documentary. The comedy group showed significantly increased heart rate and blood flow of 17 per cent for up to 24 hours. Conversely, among the documentary viewers, blood vessels constricted by 15 per cent. Constricted arteries can lead to high blood pressure. Social benefits Laughing with others is more powerful than laughing alone, so plan some face time with friends. Sharing laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships strong and resilient. Simply anticipating laughter was found to release beneficial hormones while lowering levels of harmful chemicals in the body. Laughter can also stimulate

Encourage your own healthier outlook by adding these simple laughter-inducing habits. Smile early and often in the day; it produces a mild hormonal change that can improve your mood and produce positive emotions. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and, like laughter, it’s contagious. Look up at the ceiling, and you’ll notice a positive lift. There’s no science to explain this, but it’s a fairly universal phenomenon, says Nerenberg. The opposite is true as well; if you walk around looking down, you’ll start to feel down. Fake it till you feel it Just going through the motions will trigger real laughter. Studies show the positive effects of smiling occur even if the smile is fake; faked laughter also provides the same benefits.

creative thoughts that lead to a greater sense of self-worth and optimism. Speaking of optimism In 2011, Nerenberg worked with Maxwell House on a survey about optimism, and the results are positive.
