T

he North West, in tandem with other parts of the country has seen a significant rise in figures for new car registrations, reflecting, perhaps, some growth in the local economy, or a willingness by finance companies to extend credit for car purchases. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) last week issued the official 161 car sales figures for the first half of the year. New car registrations were up + 23% (101,338) ahead on the same period last year (82,337) while the month of June saw an increase of 12% (1,626) compared to June 2015 (1,448). Roscommon was tops in the country (in percentage terms) with an increase of 37.87% in new registrations, up from 742 to 1023 on the same period in 2015. In Mayo, the increase was just over 18%, 1676 to 1978, while Sligo’s registrations went up from 742 to 951, or 28.34%. Ironically, at 14.51% the growth in Leitrim was lowest in the country. In the business sector Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV), are currently up 9% (867) on June last year (799) and year to date are up 26% (18,417) overall. While Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) registrations, have witnessed a decline of -29% for the month of June (112) 2016 when compared to the same month last year (157), however registrations are up 42% year to date. The top selling make of car for 2016 was Volkswagen, followed by Toyota, Hyundai, Ford, and Nissan. Garda Representative Association statement on Dáil protest

M

embers of the Central Executive of the Garda Representative Association gathered last week at the gates of Leinster House to call on the

government to honour the terms of the Haddington Road Agreement, which ended Thursday, June 30th 2016. The Haddington Road Agreement allowed for a review of Garda pay and conditions which was to be completed no later than June 2014. Two years later, this review still remains outstanding and we are calling on the government to finalise it without any further delay. The Garda Representative Association will not consider the Lansdowne Road Agreement until the review under the Haddington Road Agreement has been completed. The 10,000 plus members of the Garda Representative Association have fulfilled their obligations under the Haddington Road Agreement. They accepted the pay cuts imposed upon them and worked an extra three days annually for three years without payment. Gardaí have done everything that was asked of them, but the government have

Continued from front page Commenting on the figurers SIMI Director General Alan Nolan said “At the start of the year we predicted that this year’s registration numbers should reach 150,000 for the first time since 2008 and these figures keep us on track to deliver that. From today of course the focus turns to the 162 registration period. This year promises to be the first normal year of registrations since the recession and with the range of attractive offers available across all brands we are confident that 162 will also deliver in the coming months.”

failed to fulfil the commitments they made. Furthermore, under the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest (FEMPI) Act, organisations who have not signed up to the Lansdowne Road will be subject to a pay freeze from tomorrow, Friday July 1st 2016. This includes new recruits who are paid the paltry figure of €23,171. We are now calling on the government to postpone the imposition of FEMPI legislation until they fulfil their obligations under the Haddington Road Agreement. Ciarán O’Neill, President of the Garda Representative Association, says: “We signed up to the Haddington Road Agreement in good faith and did everything that was asked of us. We are disappointed that the government has failed to fulfil their part of the deal but still plan to freeze our increments from tomorrow until 2018. This is grossly unfair and we’re here today to express our anger and disappointment.”

A retrospective exhibition in honour of the late Noel Hanley, Ballina, who died earlier this year, will be held in Cafferys Art Gallery, Garden Street, Ballin, while an exhibition of his contemporary abstract works will also be showing in Ballina Arts Centre. The official launch will be by Terry Reilly on Thursday, 7th July, at 7.30pm and the work will be on display for two weeks. Noel was a highly diverse artist and the retrospective provides an opportunity to view a comprehensive collection of his works on loan from private collectors.

Human Rights and Equality debates in Ballina

Article by Gerry Walsh Phtos: Henry Wills

T

HE legacy of Mary Robinson and the massive potential of the new Mary Robinson Centre for Ballina and Mayo came into focus when, over a period of ten days at the end of June and early July hundreds descended on Ballina to witness two significant events, part of this year’s Centre Programme, centred on

equality, peace and human rights. The first was the Third International Human Rights Lecture on Saturday, 26th June, closely following by the Centre’s first International Symposium on 1st and 2nd July, addressing The Sustainable Development Goals – Equality, Human Rights and Peace.

These came hot on the heels of the 2016 Commemorative event, “Inclusive Centenaries”, which took place at the National Museum of Ireland-Country Life (Turlough) on June 18th. This articulated aspirations for an inclusive Ireland and a workshop with the Migrant Women exhibition

Support urged for Human Rights Defenders member states to remember this. She told the briefing the result would help boost the progress of far-right parties, would have a negative impact, largely, and would not help our peace process in Northern Ireland. In related issues she was delighted to learn that Irishman Prof. Michael O’Flaherty (formerly NUI Galway) was now head of the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights in Vienna. She had been shocked at the violent death of British MP Jo Cox, who she had known very well through Oxfam, particularly for her work in human rights. When she (Mary) was president of Oxfam Ms. Cox had asked her to lead a delegation of women to Eastern Chad on the border of Darfur and had also organised visits with key European politicians. Pakistan's renowned Human Rights Activist Hina Jilani was special guest at the Mary Robinson Centre's 3rd International Human Rights Lecture in Ballina pictured with her fellow Elder Mary Robinson, Attorney General Marie Whelan SC, Dara Calleary TD, Mayo Co Council Cathaoileach Collr Michael Holmes, Ballina Minicipal District Chairman Collr Michael Loftus, and Mary Robinson Centre Board members including Barry McLoughlin, TUI Galway President Jim Browne, Joanne Grehan, Gerry Jordan and Mayo Co Council CEO Peter Hynes. Picture Henry Wills

FOLLOWING last year’s historic event at St. Patrick’s Church, Ballina played host to the Mary Robinson Centre’s third international human rights lecture/debate, “Protecting Human Rights Defenders Worldwide” on Saturday, 26th July and a packed Arts Centre heard contributions from two leading human rights activists, confirming once again the project’s potential to direct world attention on Ballina. The lecture was given by Hina Jilani, leading human rights activist and lawyer, from Lahore, in Pakistan, and advocate of Pakilstan’s Supreme Court. She has been active in the movement for peace, human rights and women’s rights in Pakistan for a long number of years and renowned for her work in support of human rights defenders. The debate was moderated by Mary Lawlor, founder of the Irish-based International human rights defenders support network, Frontline Defenders, who said she had been greatly inspired in her work by both Mary Robinson and Hina Jilani. She referred to the Mary Robinson Centre as a beacon for young people in particular, a

place where they would foster inspiration based on Mary Robinson’s achievements. Earlier in the day, at a press brief briefing in Mount Falcon Mary Robinson, commending on some of the developments earlier in the week, said the Brexit outcome was not good for the human rights agenda. She said that young people in the UK must feel “very let down” by the result and she urged the EU to remember its core values. “The result reflected a lot of anger and frustration from people, with no good arguments made in favour of the EU project in the debate. She also had fears there would be a “domino effect” with other EU states withdrawing. The campaign to retain EU membership virtually ignored “what Europe is really about”, she said The Remain campaign had concentrated too much on a “fear factor about the economic implications” of leaving. Fundamental rights, including the right to gender equality which had “accelerated” in Ireland after EU accession, were at the heart of the community’s core values, she said, and she appealed to European

Hina Jilani Hina, who has at many times risked life and limb to support human rights defenders, said in her lecture in Ballina Arts Centre that some progress was being made, but much more had to be done. She outlined the many life-threatening challenges faced by people struggling for basic human rights around the world. Growing up in Japan, under martial law and a repressive regime, she had witnessed her father fighting for human rights and never thought at that time that she would get involved. “It was Islam through the barrel of a gun”, she said. “Religious slogans were used to justify actions”. “States (and governments) have the capacity and responsibility to protect people’s rights. But for many their strength is rooted in controlling, not protecting. In so many cases the answer is not found at government level but through the work of human rights defenders.” Hina herself had the horrific experience, while working as a lawyer, of seeing a woman she was defending shot dead in her own office . . . and she was lucky to escape with her own life. It was wonderful to witness such highlevel debate on important issues and an example of what’s in store for Ballina when the Mary Robinson Centre is fully established inside two years. he Mary Robinson Centre’s first International Symposium, held in Ballina last weekend, 1st and 2nd July, focussed on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Equality, Human Rights and Peace, a UN initiative to end hunger and poverty and to reach globally acceptable

minimum standards by 2030. 2016 marks the first year of their implementation. The event was attended by some key stakeholders and academics with a particular interest in the human rights agenda, the participation of women and the implementation of the SDGs.

Colm O'Gorman, Dr Noeleen Heyzer and Mary Robinson

Saturday’s first Plenary Session was chaired/moderated by Colm O’Gorman, Executive Director of Amnesty International, who was one of the main speakers at Friday’s Opening Plenary Roundtable. Other distinguished speakers over the weekend included: Noeleen Heyzer, formerly Head of UNIFEM and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific; Geraldine FraserMoleketi, Gender Envoy for the African Development Bank; Heather Grady, Vice President, Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisers, San Francisco; Noeleen Heyzer, formerly Head of UNIFEM and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific (ESCAP); Diane Elson,

While it had a global theme, the event was, nevertheless a Mayo one, and included a special arts programme with Music Generation Mayo. Talented local musicians performed and guests enjoyed a sight-seeing trip around north Mayo.

New Hive of Activity for IT Sligo

L-R: Colm Keane (Business Development Manager, The Hive), Frank Curran (CEO Leitrim Co Council), Professor Vincent Cunnane (President IT Sligo), Joe Lowe (Head of LEO at Leitrim Co Council) Oran Doherty (North West Regional Skills Forum Manager) at the official opening of IT sligo’s new outreach facility at The Hive, Leitrim’s Technology Enterprise Centre, in Carrick-on-Shannon.

I

nstitute of Technology, Sligo has extended its campus infrastructure and operations into County Leitrim with the official opening of a new dedicated facility at the Hive, Leitrim’s Technology Enterprise Centre, in Carrick-on-Shannon. The new premises is a collaboration with the Leitrim Enterprise Office (LEO), and will enhance IT Sligo’s reach into the region, enabling it to use the new base for its innovation, online and contract research activities.

It was also act as hub for the Regional Skills Forum in the North West and its new manager Oran Doherty. The Forum was developed as part of an initiative by the Department of Education and Skills, to provide a more systematic way for employers and the education and training system to work together to build the supply of skills to support job creation and the growth and development of each region. Welcoming the new facility,

Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of IT Sligo, said: “The Institute has always prided itself on being a regional resource, not just a Sligo one. We see this new facility as another significant step in helping to drive economic and social development in the region.”“The expertise and support provided by the Institute’s Innovation Centre at our Sligo headquarters has a proven track record over the years of nurturing businesses and start-ups. This new facility

now enables to take that knowledge into the region and to give it a distinctively Leitrim focus. We want to provide an environment where local businesses can grow their operation in their own county. As they develop, they are more likely stay in the county.” IT Sligo’s new Hive facility addresses one of the key objectives of the recent Jobs Action Plan for the North West 2015-2017, which was published by the Government late last year – namely to increase collaboration between enterprise and the higher education institutes. The Hive is owned and managed by Leitrim County Enterprise Fund (LCEF). Frank Curran, CEO of Leitrim County Council, and Chairman of the LCEF said: ‘The collaboration with IT Sligo is very much welcomed by Leitrim County Council and Leitrim County Enterprise Fund. IT Sligo is our local third level institution and the work of the Innovation centre at IT Sligo complements perfectly what is happening at The Hive. The Hive, or Leitrim’s Technology Enterprise Centre, provides serviced office space to meet the needs of businesses in the ICT, Digital Media and other knowledge and service based areas. I would like to thank Prof Vincent Cunnane, President IT Sligo, for working with us here in Leitrim to drive microenterprise, entrepreneurship and innovation. ‘ Further details on the new IT Sligo facility at The Hive in Carrick-on-Shannon are available at itsligo.ie.

Scanlon apologises over “Muslim” query BALLYMOTE based FF TD Eamon Scanlon had to apologise for any offence which may have been caused by his recent Dáil query about Muslims. Mr. Scanlon had asked Tánaiste and Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald how many Muslims applied for citizenship over the past three years. Mr. Scanlon said he did not mean to cause any offence. He was simply trying to find information on behalf of a constituent. As he didn’t known the information himself he told the constituent he would try and get it. Speaking on Shannonside FM last week Deputy Scanlon said: “the parliamentary question has been misinterpreted and I wish to apologise for any offence caused. I’m sorry it’s been misrepresented,’’ he added: ‘’I can genuinely assure everybody that was completely and utterly unintended,” he added.

Perennial Plant Event at Ardcarne Garden Centre

In response to his query, Minister Fitzgerald said those applying for citizenship did not have to provide details of their religion. The issue was hotly debated in a number of online sites, including The Journal.ie Sinn Féin councillor Sarah Holland said it “shouldn’t matter what religion someone was and that you could be a Jedi for all it should concern Mr Scanlon.” Mr. Scanlon’s Parliamentary Question also ruffled raised the Chair of the Irish Muslim Peace and Integration Council, Sheikh Dr Umar, who said that he had not expected such a question from a Fianna Fáil TD. He told the Irish Times it reminded him of Donald Trump. “Why should he ask such questions? Obviously, he was assuming that all Muslims are refugees and they’re all probably problematic; they’re not integrating and all that...”

Bundoran Concert to support Fr. John Keane

C

ountry, Irish and Gospel singer James Kilbane will be in concert at Holyrood Hotel, Bundoran, on Saturday 16th July, 2016 at 8pm for a night of country gospel and Irish in a fundraising event to support the ministry work of Fr. John Keane.

Fr. John endeavours to help fund and take on pilgrimage to Medjugorje many teenage youth and young adults from the North West and across the whole of Ireland. Much of Fr. John’s work is through teenage prayer and delivering school missions across the

country. When schools are closed he is involved in youth festivals and adult missions as he also works with Céilí Mission Community based in Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath. Fr. John believes that the youth are the future church and the fruit of his work is evident with many youth groups and young pilgrims from across the country. This Bundoran fundraising event with James Kilbane is to aid Fr. John in his mission of assisting our youth to go on pilgrimage to Medjugorje and that it should not be based on whether you have or have not the money to go. All support will be appreciated. Since 2004 James Kilbane has become a popular voice on radio and television across the country with his mix of country, gospel and faith-based music. Kilbane’s home grown and easy style now attracts many from every walk of life and Christian traditions to his music. Through his songs James tells many stories that relates to life and touches many hearts. In recent times his music is charting regularly on iTunes gospel music charts and he has been requested to perform for presidents, the Vatican, death row prisoners as well as performing regular concerts and events across the country. With twelve albums to date Kilbane will sing many of his popular country songs as well as many Irish ballads. The parish also look forward to welcoming many visitors and other traditions. To enjoy James in this very special concert at the Holyrood Hotel on Saturday 16th July tickets at €15 will be available from the Holyrood Hotel at (071) 984 1232, outlets across the region, from organising committee or by contacting Mary at 087 7847304 for tickets or information. he much anticipated 67th Bonniconlon Show & Gymkhana, with a total prize fund of €45,000, will this year take place on Bank Holiday Monday, August 1st, 2016. The picturesque Bonniconlon village is located under the Ox Mountains on the Mayo/Sligo border. The show itself takes place on an impressive 200 acre site, with each acre utilised to the

maximum. From humble beginnings in 1949 the show has grown substantially over the years and is currently one of the top shows and gymkhanas in the country with entertainment for young and old. Come and dance the day away to Michael English & his band. Dance the night away to Jimmy Buckley & his band.

A special word of gratitude must go to the exhibitors, competitors, stewards, committee and landowners who each year make the event bigger and better than ever. This day would not be possible without the generosity of the sponsors who come from near and far and the committee wish to sincerely thank all of them who have contributed to make the Bonniconlon Show the successful event it now is. Chairmans Address - John O’Hara. Dear Friends, It is with great pleasure I welcome you on behalf of the officers and committee of Bonniconlon Show and Gymkhana to our 67th show. Building on the success of last year’s event, the show attracted a huge attendance with average weather conditions. The show is designed as a platform to present all aspects of Irish culture and agriculture for town and country alike. Our show is now rated as one of the best events in the country with entertainment for young and old. This event would not be possible without the generosity of our sponsors for their outstanding support over the years and who still support us in what every way possible event in these hard times. To them we say “Go raibh mile maith agaibh” It is, without question the continuous commitment and tireless efforts of the exhibitors and competitors who have supported us over the years. Thank you to Superintend Joe Doherty and staff of Ballina Garda Station & our local Garda Tom McManus. Our judges, Civil Defence, I.C.A., Rally Marshalls, Foroige, G.A.A. Tidy Towns, Mayo County Council, our hard working Secretary, Gerry and his helpers. A special work of thanks to our land owners and anyone inconvenienced because of our show. And last but not least our hard working stewards from far and near who worked tirelessly for weeks before and after the show to make it the successful event it is. A big” Thank You” to our local Solas team, Rural Social Scheme and Tus and their supervisors Margaret Hennigan, Gerry

The Bonniconlon show is more than just an exhibition of live-stock, farm produce, trade stands and jumping - it is a family orientated event which happens every year on the August Bank Holiday Monday. This “Fashionable Taste of Local” event is just in keeping with the inventive history and theme of the Bonniconlon show. dating game. The report says: ‘They may have accumulated a few more wrinkles, but revolution is in their nature. They are healthier, fitter and wealthier than those who have gone before them, and are no longer constrained by what people think.’ The Baby Boomer generation, born after the war, forms nearly a quarter of the Irish population and controls more than threequarters of the nation’s wealth. Over-50s spend more on beauty products, luxury travel and culture than younger people, with women in this group spending more on clothes, shoes and accessories. As a result, companies are keener to win the Superboomers’ custom, says research by consultants The Future Laboratory commissioned by technology firm Huawei. Major fashion brands are choosing older women and men to front advertising campaigns as grey hair is reclaimed as a sign of a ‘hip, defiant, pro-age’ attitude. The report claims: ‘With fitter bodies, more active minds and entrepreneurial power, this group is increasingly becoming the face of irish fashion, beauty, design and media.’ The Superboomers are nearly as technologysavvy as their children and grandchildren, with eight out of ten having internet access and twothirds using online shopping. But they take a more cautious approach to handing over

personal details to websites and social networks than younger people. New online dating services aimed at older people are springing up, but this generation is more wary about the privacy implication of sites like Google and Facebook, which are free but make their money by employing users’ data to sell advertising. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the vast majority of Superboomers are strongly opposed to the idea of having to give up their independence in their final years. Fewer than one in five of those aged 60 to 65 would consider moving to a care home if they became frail in old age. The report concludes: ‘The centre of social, cultural and economic gravity is clearly going to shift to the Superboomers. ‘While youth once symbolised everything that was to do with innovation, freedom, fun and adventure, this group has the money and time to enjoy a boundaryless existence.’ Tom Savigar, chief strategy officer of The Future Laboratory, said: ‘The Superboomer is redefining what it means to be older in British society and culture. ‘This generation of over-achievers climbed the career ladder when the economy was booming, house prices were soaring and opportunity was everywhere. Retirement offers them the chance to rev up rather than slow down.’

oes spring have you sniffling and sneezing? Tips for easing the pain of seasonal allergies. Spring has sprung. Trees have burst into leaf, flowers are budding — and for millions of allergy-sufferers, sneezing, congestion, sniffling and itchy eyes have become a way of life. The major culprits? In early spring, it’s the wind-borne pollen from trees, and later on, grasses cause even more trouble. For most people, allergy symptoms are worst during hot, dry or windy days when there’s a lot of pollen and mold in the air. And while you might not be able to completely avoid allergy symptoms, you can take steps to ease the pain. Here are some tips from The Mayo Clinic. Reduce your exposure to pollen There are several ways you can reduce your exposure to allergy triggers: Stay indoors on windy days. The best time to go outside is after a good rain, which helps to clear pollen from the air. You can also get a heads-up on out door allergens by checking the pollen forecast and air quality index in your local weather report. Delegate yard work, such as mowing the lawn, pulling weeds and other gardening chores. If you do work outside, wear a dust mask and avoid outdoor activity in the early morning when pollen counts are highest. Keep the outdoors outside by closing your windows (including car windows). Remember that your window screens cannot protect you from microscopic pollen and mould

spores. Allergens also have the annoying habit of sticking to clothing, so shower and change immediately after outdoor activities, and avoid drying sheets or clothes outside. Also, avoid tracking allergens all over your home by leaving your shoes at the door — preferably on a rubber mat that won’t trap particles and can be cleaned easily. Ban your pets from your bed or couch since pollen clings to pet fur. When pollen counts are high, consider taking your allergy medication before symptoms start. Keep indoor air clean Here are some ways to help eliminate allergens from your home: Use the air conditioner in your house (and car). Install a micron allergy-grade filter in your ventilation system. Use a dehumidifier to help keep indoor air dry. Consider using a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in your bedroom. Clean floors with a vacuum cleaner that has a small-particle or HEPA filter. And last but not least, don’t skip the spring-cleaning! If you’re allergic to dust mites, you may want to take these extra steps: Encase mattresses, box springs and pillows in allergy-proof covers. Wash sheets and blankets in water temperature of at least 130 F (54 C). Vacuum floors frequently (at least weekly). Consider replacing your carpets with laminate flooring or another

hard material that won’t collect dust mites and other allergens. (This is especially important for your bedroom). Swap your old dust rag for a microfibre clothe that will trap dust better. Consider wearing gloves and a mask while doing chores that stir up dust — like vacuuming or dusting. Medications for relief of symptoms A number of over-the-counter and prescription allergy medications can help control seasonal allergy symptoms, including: Nasal corticosteroids. Corticosteroid nasal sprays are considered an effective medication for seasonal allergies and are often prescribed for more troublesome symptoms. Antihistamines. Antihistamines help relieve itching, sneezing and runny nose for many allergy-suffers. (They are less effective for allergy-related congestion.)

Decongestants. For help with congestion, these medications are available in both over-the-counter and prescription liquids, tablets and nasal sprays. Note : Always consult your doctor before taking any medications. (According to the Mayo Clinic, oral decongestants can elevate blood pressure and worsen prostate problems.) Decongestant nasal sprays should only be used for a few days, since prolonged use can make nasal congestion worse. Other treatments for seasonal allergies include allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots), and nasal irrigation (which involves flushing out mucus and irritants from your nose with a squeeze bottle or neti pot). Alternative therapies Some people also seek allergy relief from various herbal remedies, including extracts of the shrub butterbur, cat’s claw, choline, goldenseal, stinging nettle,

When to see a doctor For many allergy-sufferers, avoiding allergens and using over-thecounter medications or other treatments provide enough relief to make it through the season. But if your symptoms persist or make you extremely uncomfortable, you may need skin tests or blood tests to find out exactly what allergens trigger your symptoms. In some cases, congestion and other unpleasant symptoms could be food-allergy related rather than environmental.

belladonna and bromelain. And some claim that locally produced honey helps reduce allergic reactions by boosting the immune system. Other alternative therapies include use of probiotics, acupuncture, hypnosis and “allergy removal” programs.
