The President of IT Sligo is to leave the Institute later this year to take up a new role as President of Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT).

Professor Cunnane made the announcement at a conference for IT Sligo staff on Tuesday. He will succeed Dr Maria Hinfelaar who left her role with LIT earlier this year.

“This was a very difficult decision to make,” said Professor Cunnane. “I have enjoyed leading this fantastic Institute and working with such dedicated staff and students. However, there were a number of personal factors which have led me to re-evaluate my position and to make this move.” (Continued on page 2)

S the new government settles into its task of dealing with the many issues which need to be addressed, one of the clauses in the Draft Programme could spark some controversy when the final document is released.

The document proposes that the aims of the new government would include reforming the way that school attendance is monitored – and in turn make child benefit connected to it. Under the section of the leaked document, it is stated that this measure would “address the poor attendance within some families”.

While this proposal is bound to be a major talking point the measure has already been branded as “a direct copy from the heartless policies of the British Tories” by some “leftwing” TDs. The finger may also be pointed towards Roscommon-based Independent TD., Denis Naughton, the newly-appointed Minister for Communications, Climate change and Natural Resources who has suggested the measure on a number of occasions.

Commenting during a debate on the Spring Economic Statement last year, the Roscommon-South Leitrim TD stated that it had the potential to save around €100 million each year.

Back in 2013, the proposal was shot down by the Department of Social Protection which said that it could potentially run afoul of EU regulations, with the European Commission indicating that it might encroach on the rights of migrant workers.

There appears to be a general view among the Opposition (now a diverse mix of TDs) that families and parents need support, not punishment and many have criticised the inclusion of the clause in the draft document. (Continued on page 2)

Vigil on anniversary of Seán Mac Diarmada’s execution I n the early morning of this Thursday, 12th May, Leitrim people will gather outside Kilmainham Gaol at the exact time Seán Mac Diarmada was executed 100 years ago.

This will be one of the outstanding and iconic events which have been organised to commemorate the 1916 Rising and the execution of Seán Mac Diarmada in particular.

The Kiltyclogher Seán Mac Diarmada Commemoration Committee and Coiste Cuimhneacháin 1916, Béal an Átha Móir have combined to bring people by bus to this event and it is expected that many Leitrim living in Dublin, or indeed from elsewhere, will also come to Kilmainham tonight to commemorate this memorable night in Irish history.

The vigil will start at 3.00am on this Thursday morning and the group will be joined by the imme-

diate relatives of Seán Mac Diarmada as well as relatives of James Connolly who was executed the same morning 100 years ago.

The commemoration programme will include a reading of Seán Mac Diarmada’s last letter to his family and a poignant period of respectful silence at 3.45 am the exact time when Seán Mac Diarmada was executed.

Representations were made to the Office of Public Works to allow members of the Mac Diarmada Family to be given access to the Stonebreaker’s Yard where the executions took place but, despite a number of requests, this has not been granted by the OPW. However, it is hoped to commemorate this event in a fitting way outside the walls of the jail.

Anybody who wishes to be present on this historic occasion is welcome to attend. Beidh fáilte romhat.

ast week Sabriena Cunningham and Regina Kerrane, both living in Castlebar, graduated with the first wave of jewellery experts in Ireland. The Retail Jewellers of Ireland teamed up with the Company of Goldsmiths to present certificates to 11 graduates. These graduates become the first to have the knowledge and experience to work and sell jewellery in Ireland. Presenting the certificates in Dublin Castle was the Assay Master, Ana Izquierdo.

According to Ana, “This is a fantastic initiative set up by the Retail Jewellers of Ireland. It brings together the expertise needed to sell jewellery. Seanad: Leitrim loses out while Roscommon wins extra seat Last Tuesday evening, Leitrim’s two sitting senators Paschal Mooney and Michael Comiskey lost their seats in the Seanad.

The two politicians failed to get enough votes to return to the Agricultural panel in Seanad Eireann. One of the longest serving senators in the country, Paschal Mooney was bitterly disappointed to lose his seat in the Oireachtas.

He admitted “I had hoped to do better” and revealed he

Roscommon, on the other hand, fared out much better, doubling their representation.

Maura Hopkins, who was elected on the Administrative Panel, achieved the highest vote of any of Fine Gaels’s elected candidates. After receiving 7,000 votes in the recent General Election she was comfortably elected to the Seanad with 117 votes.

councillor Nigel Dineen missed out narrowly on winning and seat on the Industrial and Commercial panel.

Country Life Museum comes alive on May 22nd meeting on Sunday to introduce their own talents with yarn – once an essential part of household chores.

Mythical Meanderings Woodland Trail Little visitors love the challenge of a trail to follow and what setting could better than the beautiful grounds of the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life? Last year’s delightful Fairy Trail is a hard act to follow, but this year’s Mythical Meanderings Woodland Trail is really very special. Make sure to pick up the trail guide at the Information Area.

usic, dance and the arts have always been a very important part of country life in Ireland and it’s no wonder they play a significant role at Féile na Tuaithe which takes place on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May at the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. As with everything at Féile, it’s all about visitors engaging with the performances, doing workshops or following trails. That’s what makes it such fun for families. Feile is a family friendly festival which is completely free.

The joyful sound of music spilling out from the Entertainment Village on the front lawn always gathers a crowd. Saturday showcases sean nos dancing with the incredible talent of Liam Scanlon from Glenhest. Liam has performed all over the world from the USA to Russia with groups such as Altan and Ragús. Also on Saturday

are the wonderful Castlebar Town Band who are always hugely popular with audiences. Sunday begins with the children’s’ favourite, the Whistleblast Quartet with the intriguing title of ‘Snow White and the Seven Short Stories’.

Saturday’s lineup concludes with The Murphy Sisters while Sunday’s finale is none other than the Clew Bay Pipe Band.

Sometimes the lines between art and craft are very blurred and that is certainly the case with many exhibitors. Bushcraft with Mac Tire Bushcraft and fly tying with Colm McClean are wonderful examples of craft meeting art; skilled fingers creating items which are both functional and very beautiful. Making May flowers with the Museum’s educational team is a traditional celebration of the early summer and something everyone can join. The Museum’s Knitting and Crochet circle are

On Sight Art Trail “1916” is the theme for the On Sight art trail programme launching at Féile this year. The trails sees wonderful new artworks sited in the beautiful Museum grounds at Turlough Park. Thirteen artists, including Arts Squad artists and independent artists have created an engaging series of works inspired by elements of 1916. Visitors to Féile are invited to explore the Museum grounds and discover the new art works on the trail. It will remain in place for three months, until the end of August.

The artists this year are: Aisling Flynn, Aidan Crotty, Brendan Timlin, Bríd Kivneen, Christina Peterson, Christine Kelly, Conor O’Grady, David Lloyd, David McInerney, Henri Hedou, Joanna Hopkins, Katie Moore and Saw Tun. Near thing for Roscommon The Roscommon team and management are coming to terms with their near-exit from the Connacht championship a few weeks ago and, while taking on some of the responsibility for their poor display against New York joint Roscommon manager Fergal O’Donnell said some of the players just didn’t do what they were supposed to.

The manager also suggested that some of the players may

have gotten caught up with the hype, fund-raising events, etc, which just wasn’t good enough. But the performance was very disappointing for the thousands of people who travelled to see the game.

Others felt it might be the best thing that ever happened, a wake-up call before their next championship encounter.

While Roscommon may have missed many goal

chances during the game they were also lucky to hold out in the end after conceding fifteen points to a good New York team. Nobody knows what kind of Roscommon team will turn up for the next round of the championship but Roscommon supporters hope that those taking the field against Leitrim will exhibit more “pride in the jersey” than those who took to the field in New York.

feast for the senses awaits. The Mayo International Choral Festival is proud to present this inaugural concert at the newly refurbished Knock Basilica, to commemorate the 1916 Easter Rising and World War One on Saturday May 14th at Knock Basilica in

Co. Mayo. The night promises world class performances, a unique event in the 1916 calendar and for those attending, one that will be remembered indefinitely.

Highlights include Sibéal Ní Chasaide performing the hauntingly beautiful Mise Eire, giving audiences another opportunity to witness this muchheralded Centenary performance. The esteemed RTÉ Concert Orchestra will perform an Elegy Suite for 1916 by internationally distinguished composer Patrick Cassidy. Mayo born Mezzo Soprano Anne Marie Gibbons and Tenor Owen Gilhooly from Limerick will also perform Cassidy’s well-known aria Vida Cor Meum from the movie Hannibal, joined by the 120-strong Peace Choir. This consists of members of the Ballina Chamber Choir, Cór Mhaigh Eo and Dún Laoghaire Choral Society.

Newport’s Sophie Knox collects Female Personality gong for badminton exploits World Champion kickboxer Dessie Leonard claims High Achievement award IT Sligo Choir named Society of the Year The student achievements of IT Sligo’s Clubs and Societies were honoured at a special awards ceremony in the Best Western South Hotel in Sligo last Thursday.

Student representatives from the Institute’s 70 clubs and societies gathered for a gala evening, which was organised in association with AIB. Each year, the awards honour the outstanding achievements of students through their activities with clubs and societies.

IT Sligo sports scholarship student, Declan Reidy, was named male Personality of the Year for his golfing exploits over the last 12 months, which saw him secure a prestigious Royal & Ancient golfing scholarship, as well as reach the matchplay stages of this year’s West of Ireland Amateur Golf Championship at Rosses Point. The final year Business with Marketing student is also finished 4th in the R&A sports scholars tournament at the prestigious St Andrew’s course – an event which also carries world ranking points.

Newport’s Sophie Knox, a final year Mechatronics student, collected the women’s personality award for her exploits with the Institute’s badminton club. Sophie is Chair of the Institute’s badminton club and is also team captain, guiding IT Sligo to a runners-up spot in the recent intervarsities competition.

The High Achievement awards in sport (male and female) went to World Champion kickboxer Dessie Leonard and

soccer player Rachel Kearns, a member of the IT Sligo women’s soccer team which reached the final of the recent Intervarsities Cup. Both students are current IT Sligo Sports Scholarship recipients.

Watersport featured prominently on the night too, with the surfing team’s Intervarsities success seeing them pick up the Club of Year accolade, while the men’s basketballers recent All-Ireland triumph saw them take home the Team of the Year prize.

The IT Sligo choir also hit the right notes, as it was named Society of the year. The choir which was set up last September, comprises students and staff members, and has proven to be a big hit.

It played a central role in the inaugural Sligo Sings Concert at the Hawk’s Well Theatre last November, and the Institute’s 1916 commemoration ceremonies in March.

In addition to the main awards, each club and society nominated as the Personality of the Year the student who contributed or achieved most through that club. The list or recipients is below.

Congratulating all the award recipients, Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of IT Sligo said: “The role of Clubs and Societies has never been more central to IT Sligo’s ambition to produce rounded graduates of the highest calibre. You are leaving behind a great legacy to those students who are following behind you.”

Special guests on the night included Mayo senior gaelic football captain, and former Sigerson Cup winner with the Institute, Keith Higgins, who presented the Institute’s hurlers with their Fergal Maher Cup winners medals.

Irish women’s Soccer International Emma Hansberry, who graduated from IT Sligo last October, was among the invited guests.

Mayo singer joins U2’s The Edge for historic Rome performance

A choir of seven Music Generation Young Ambassadors, including a young singer from Mayo, joined U2 guitarist The Edge in making history as they performed live at the Sistine Chapel, Rome, on Saturday, 30 April as part of a conference on regenerative medicine, Cellular Horizons.

Music Generation Mayo participant Naoise Hughes (Cong), age 16, joined young singers from Carlow and Cork City for this momentous occasion – the first ever performance by a contemporary artist at the Vatican venue.

The choir, which was specially formed for the concert, performed a cover of Leonard Cohen’s If It Be Your Will as well as versions of U2 songs Yahweh, Ordinary Love and Walk On, together with The Edge on acoustic guitar and vocals.

Naoise Hughes has been a voice student

at the Music Generation Mayo Ballinrobe tuition centre for the past two years. She was invited to take part in this once-in-alifetime event as a Music Generation Young Ambassador – a Music Generation initiative which offers hundreds of young musicians valuable opportunities to perform at national and international events each year.

In the weeks leading up to this very special concert, Naoise and the six other talented choir members came together to rehearse under the direction of Musical Director and Arranger Dawn Kenny.

Naoise shared her response to this amazing experience: “It really was an amazing experience to sing with the Edge and especially in such an incredible venue.

The Edge is such an inspiring and brilliant musician and it was a great honour to get

to perform with him at this historic event in the Sistine Chapel. I’m really grateful for this opportunity and to have met the other singers from the other Music Generations around Ireland was a bonus.

The whole experience was surreal and life changing.”

Speaking of the performance, Music Generation Mayo Coordinator Kate McKeon said: “We are all extremely proud of Naoise who has been an incredible ambassador for Music Generation and for all aspiring young singers in Mayo through her participation in this unique and special event. To have this amazing chance to perform on an international stage with such a highly-regarded artist is something that most young people could only dream of. We are so grateful to our partners at Mayo Music Education Partnership for supporting the programme locally and continuing to provide access to hundreds of young people like Naoise. We look forward to working with Naoise as she continues to hone her skills as a young musician with Music Generation in the coming years.”

Music Generation National Director Rosaleen Molloy said: “I would like to congratulate these wonderful young people on their stunning performance. It has been such a privilege for Music Generation to have been invited to be part of this prestigious event together with The Edge – a remarkable opportunity for all seven young musicians to bring their talents to an international stage. Truly they have done both Music Generation and their country proud. We look forward to following their bright musical journeys in the future.”

On the night the choir performed with The Edge to a group of around 200 doctors, researchers and philanthropists who were attending the ‘Third International Conference on the Progress of Regenerative Medicine and its Cultural Impact’ at the Vatican.

“Meitheal” tradition alive and well in west - david mcgowan

“THE brave don’t live forever, but the cautious don’t live at all . . .”

The author was a man called Bill See, but the quote could be aptly applied to Ballina businessman David McGowan, who must now be breathing a huge sigh of relief as he observes his decommissioned Boeing jet nestling in his developing glamping site in Enniscrone, Co. Sligo.

The journey of the “big yoke” between Shannon and Enniscrone (which has now gone viral, capturing media attention both nationally and internationally,) was not without its moments. But the

most trying period of all for the tug-boat crew, boatmen and helpers was experienced on the home stretch as they battled with the exigencies of the tide before the cargo settled on the Enniscrone sands.

In an interview on Today FM on Monday morning, the forever enigmatic David complimented everybody for their contribution to the ambitious project, but noted in particular that 65% of the people involved were effectively volunteers, people who put their shoulders to the wheel to ensure the plane arrived safely. He had experienced all of this so many

times before in a different context.

Being a funeral undertaker he had witnessed how friends and neighbours flocked to the assistance of families who had lost loved ones; in his case the commitment of so many people who worked to make sure the plane beached safely was overwhelming and he was genuinely grateful to all of them. “The meitheal spirit is alive and well in the west of Ireland and I appreciate the efforts of so many people”, he said.

The crowds still lined the streets of Enniscrone at 3 a.m. on Sunday morning as the gigantic plane was hoisted onto the truck, which

guided the Boeing jet from the beach, through the town on its way to the glamping site. The sun shone brightly on Sunday as thousands more visited the town to view the plane at its destination.

While everybody wonders what

will happen next there is a feeling abroad that now the plane has “landed” in Enniscrone, after a highly successful first stage of the glamping village project, the rest of the operation will, after all, be just, well . . . “plain sailing”!

Hold on to your emotions This is such a big occasion for you and all your family, it can be easy to get caught up in the emotion of it all. If there are some personal things you would like to say to your daughter, but don’t want to include in your speech, write them down for her to read on the day instead.

The last word Ask any public speaker what their biggest fear is, and they’ll pretty much always say it’s forgetting where they are in their speech.

hat to include in your speech - Whether you intend to make it short and sweet, or to really reap the benefits of the spotlight, your speech will need to contain some basic elements if it is to be in keeping with tradition.

The intro You need to introduce yourself, but it doesn’t have to be reminiscent of an AA meeting. Tell them your name and maybe crack a small joke to make yourself feel relaxed.

The welcome Make a formal welcome to everyone, and thank them for coming. Try to mention, in particular, the bride’s mother and the groom’s parents too.

Your daughter She’s made you pay for it, and now’s your chance to get a little of your own back on her! Recall a funny anecdote from her youth, or simply tell her how proud you are of the woman she’s become.

Your son-in-law Formally welcome the groom to your family, in any way you feel appropriate. You can mention how you felt about him when you first met him, or a moment when you’ve been particularly glad he’s around.

Parting wisdom As the elder speaker at the wedding, you should impart some of your wisdom to the happy couple about maintaining a healthy marriage or living a happy life. This

is also a good place to throw in some jokes about wives, weddings or life in general, just as long as it doesn’t upset your wife!

The toast Finish up by asking everyone to stand and raise a glass to the happy couple. No doubt, the best man will do something similar at the end of his speech too, but it’s the traditional way to close yours.

Top tips for making it fun The father of the bride might be a mature gentleman, but that doesn’t mean your speech has to be dull. Here are some top tips to make it as enjoyable as possible for everyone involved…

Timing is everything At many weddings, fathers of brides have been known to drone on for some time, and that’s only fair. However, to keep things fun, engaging and avoiding Aunty Doreen falling asleep in her soup, aim for a speech that lasts around six to seven minutes in total. Read your speech through at your normal speaking pace to gauge how long this really is.

Keep it clean Jokes are a great way to break the ice and loosen up the crowd, but don’t be too focused on being funny. You’re the elder statesman of the speakers today, so you can afford to be a bit more conservative in your words. That doesn’t mean you have to be full though; a few jibes at the expense of the wedding or your daughter’s love of spending money are fine, just don’t go too close to the bone.

Fumbling over your words and getting a bit lost is nothing to be ashamed of, provided you can make a quick recovery and get back on track okay. Take your speech on cue cards with bulletpointed reminders of what you want to talk about, rather than printing it all out in full. This will give you a more natural delivery, and will save you having to read through several paragraphs to find your place after getting lost.

If you do get stuck, use a moment to clear your throat, take a drink of water or give your daughter a kiss.

These moments might seem a lifetime to you, but will feel like a natural pause to your audience, and will give you the breathing space you need to get things back on track. Take your time, don’t panic and try to enjoy your moment of fame.

WALKING IN AND WALKING OUT You may have spent a long time discussing your first dance song with your partner, but don’t neglect other important pieces of music you’ll need on your day! For your wedding ceremony songs, you’ll need to make at least two choices – namely, your processional and recessional songs.

A processional song is the music that you and your wedding party will walk down the aisle to – you

can have one song for everyone, or choose a separate song for your grand entrance. At the end of the ceremony, you and your new husband leave the venue to your recessional music, which tends to be more upbeat than the processional.

There are traditional choices for both of these pieces of music, but we’ve given you a couple of options to consider.

1. Bridal Chorus, Wagner Often known as Here Comes The Bride, this piece of classical music is the traditional choice for the procession of the bride, and is often played on an organ.

We’ve chosen a slightly more modern arrangement by Vicente Avella on classical piano – that way you can keep the element of tradition without the drama!

2. Canon in D, Pachelbel Another very popular choice with brides. This gorgeous piece of music sounds beautiful played by a traditional quartet, but we also love this version by Per-Olov Kindgren on classical guitar.

3. A Thousand Years, The Piano Guys (originally Christina Perri) Often couples can’t decide between a classic instrumental or a more modern lovesong with vocals for their processional music. Why not get the best of both worlds with an instrumental cover of one of your favourite songs? We seriously love this piano and cello cover of Christina Perri.

4. Glasgow Love Theme, from Love Actually Walking down the aisle to a song from your favourite film soundtrack is another way to

incorporate instrumental music with a personal touch into your ceremony. There are loads of options to choose from – Love Actually is a great place to start, and will have you welling up before you know it.

5. Marry Me, Train. If you want a modern song but aren’t sure what sort of thing to go for, then we think this a great choice. The melody and lyrics are both beautiful, and the tempo isn’t too fast for a processional.

6. Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Israel Kamakawiwo’Ole For something a little bit different, you can’t beat this gorgeous ukelele cover – it’s sure to get everyone smiling!

7. Wedding March, Mendelssohn This is the traditional choice for the wedding recessional. This grand organ piece is definitely all about the high drama, so is best suited to larger or religious venues.

8. Arrival of the Queen of Sheba, Handel. This classical piece may be intended to signify an arrival, but it works perfectly for a recessional – it’s high tempo and undoubtedly joyful. Perfect for more traditional couples.

9. Don’t Stop Believing, Vitamin String Quartet (originally Journey) Another classical cover of a modern tune – we love this version of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing as played by a string quartet, as it strikes the perfect balance between traditional and contemporary.

10. Signed, Sealed, Delivered, Stevie Wonder.

One of the most popular modern choices – and with good reason!

After all, you and your new husband have just signed the wedding register, so the lyrics “signed, sealed, delivered – I’m yours!” are particularly meaningful.

11. First Day Of My Life, Bright Eyes.

This adorable acoustic song is a great choice for couples looking for a quirky alternative, and we think it’s a lovely way to start the first day of your married life.

In One Day Within the first half hour of stopping smoking, your blood pressure and pulse drop to normal. You’ll probably also feel your hands and feet start to warm

up. By the eighth hour, the nicotine and carbon monoxide levels in your blood drops by half and oxygen levels increase to normal levels. You’ll feel more alert, sleep better, and be stronger. Smoker’s breath also disappears. If you can go 24 hours, your chance of a heart attack decreases.

Within Three Days In 48 hours after quitting, your body eliminates carbon monoxide and nicotine completely. Your senses of smell improves and your taste buds switch from black and white to color. Your lungs start to clear out mucus and other debris.

What to expect when quitting There are nearly as many methods for quitting smoking as there are ex-smokers. Most of the tools offer temporary relief from the physical withdrawal symptoms of smoking cessation, but do not address the powerful psychological addictions.
