he news that more than 20 people – including some with no other illnesses – have died as a result of flu has resulted in the health authorities urging people, particularly in the at risk categories to get the flu vaccine, if they haven’t done so already. The deaths have struck all age groups but have taken the biggest toll on the elderly, according to the latest update from the HSE. Flu is believed to have peaked or is about to, but it will be circulating for another four weeks, HSE public health specialist Dr Kevin Kelleher said last week: “Last week or this week will be the peak,” he said. There has been a slight increase in the overall rate of patients seeking help for flu-like illness. The number of patients admitted to hospital with flu has risen and they are adding to the trolleys crisis which doesn’t seem to be getting any closer to being solved throughout the country. Patients with flu must be isolated, leaving two patients occupying a four bed ward. Luckily there is no evidence that the flu has particularly hit school-children in the north-west but there are several outbreaks in nursing homes. Still, all areas in Ireland are categorised as having “widespread” flu activity, according to latest updates. People in at-risk groups are urged to get vaccinated against influenza and the HSE has urged people to remember it is still not too late to get vaccinated. The at risk groups are targeted because they are more at risk of hospitalisation and death. These include people with chronic heart conditions, chronic liver disease, chronic respiratory disease, renal failure, those with high body mass index and such conditions. Emphasis is also placed on health care workers and carers who are at higher risk of contracting flu and passing it to vulnerable patients. This is complicated by the fact that Influenza B, which is not covered by the flu vaccine, remains the main flu virus circulating followed by the AH3N2 strain, known as the Aussie flu. Although the numbers of people coming down with the virus is high the strain itself is not more severe than last year. In addition to the flu, the trolley crisis is also set to continue for weeks to come, impacting further on surgery for patients on waiting lists.

Fears of Carrick business being lost due to traffic problems URGENT calls are being made to construct a by-pass or ring-road to help solve some of the ongoing traffic problems in Carrick-onShannon. The issue came into sharp focus recently following a multi-vehicle collision in the Cortober area of the town. The chaos that ensued following a multivehicle collision was discussed at a meeting of the Council in Carrick last week. Cllr Enda Stenson proposed the Council would call on Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to immediately look into the possibility of creating a ring road around the town as traders could not wait for the TII to make a decision on the long-awaited by pass of the town. “Last Friday shows the problem that exists there,” Cllr Stenson told the meeting. “I think there’s a huge problem and I don’t know if we should or can wait for this bypass to come that connects Mullingar to Sligo. “There should be a ring road as close to the town as viably possible,” he suggested. “I know that’s going to involve a bridge and that’s extra money but it would give a proper structure to the town. “It’s vital at this stage because business is being lost. I know a lot of people that are heading to Longford instead of Carrick at this stage, particularly at the weekends because from Friday at dinner time the traffic problems of getting in or getting out

COMPACT CALVING GATE or crossing the bridge is not easy for a person from our side of Leitrim and they just don’t want to do it any more,” he said. Cllr Armstrong-McGuire was herself caught in traffic on the Roscommon side of the bridge and had to park up and walk back
across. She said so many people were affected by the congestion, those making and receiving deliveries, people trying to make buses, trains, or flights. She said that taxis couldn’t move for two hours.
Connacht Athletic Association AGM At the Annual General Meeting of Connacht Athletic Association of Ireland held in the McWilliam Hotel, Claremorris, recently Chairperson Brian Bruton thanked all who helped in any way in the running of athletics in Connacht. The year was reviewed and structures put in place for 2018. Secretary Amanda Hynes reported a big increase in the number of athletes competing at
competitions. Treasurer Dermot McNamara presented a healthy balance sheet to the meeting. Dermot stepped down as treasurer after twenty one years in the position. Padraig Griffin lead a tribute to Dermot on his 21 years of remarkable service to Connacht, a testament to his dedication that he was there at every event throughout the province, the delegates unanimously acknowledged his

Sligo House prices increasing by 16% says latest survey
H
OUSE prices in Sligo will continue to increase, due to a shortage of properties and no new-builds, according local auctioneers. This is the view following a national survey by Real Estate Alliance which reveals the price of the average three-bed semi in Sligo rose by 15.8% to €110,000 in the last 12 months. And after prices increased by 2.3% between September and
December 2017, local agents are predicting that property values will rise by 3.5% in the county in the coming year. The REA Average House Price Survey concentrates on the actual sale price of Ireland’s typical stock home, the threebed semi, giving an up-to-date picture of the property market in towns and cities countrywide. The average semi-detached
house nationally now costs €225,806, the Q4 REA Average House Price Survey found - a rise of 1.8% on the Q3 figure of €221,861. Overall, the average house price across the country rose by 11.3% over the past 12 months - compared to 7.7% nationally in 2016. The survey also found that agents throughout the country expect prices to rise by 7.5% on average in the next 12 months. “The heated market that we saw throughout much of 2017 has cooled somewhat and we are now in a period of more certainty,” said REA spokesperson Healy Hynes. A lack of supply is still the main driver of the market, with listings of second hand properties at a low level around the country. “Anything that does go on sale is reaching sale agreed in a short period of time - five weeks on average and four weeks in Dublin city. “However, this is not normal in a properly functioning market, where time periods of eight weeks to sale agreed are
A Tale of the Expected comes to Ballina Arts Centre SWINFORD native Martina Reilly is author of best-selling novels, Things I Want You to Know and the Impac Long-listed Something Borrowed. But she is also a talented playwright and people from the north-west might be familiar with her last play, Breathing Lessons which was performed in recent times at Ballina Arts Centre. Martina, with her friends at Down at Heel Productions, is now bringing her latest play, A Tale of the Expected, to Ballina Arts Centre on this Saturday, 27th January, at 8 p.m. It centres around Lana who is eighteen and pregnant. The father is Roman, aka Mr Party Central and his family run the local chipper. Lana is determined to have the baby while the thoughts of becoming a Dad make Roman ill. In fact, the only thing he and Lana have in
common is that they both love to watch re-runs of Deal or No Deal. It’s not the most promising start.... A clash of personality, of families and of cultures combine to create an uplifting and emotional night of theatre and well worth viewing. Martina is the daughter of Catherine Reilly (nee Henry), from Cloonacanna, Swinford and the male lead in the play, Roman, is played by Donnagh Mayock. Donnagh’s dad is from Killala and his mother hails from Glenamoy. He is the nephew of Gabriel Irwin, who was the Mayo GAA goalkeeper in the late’ eighties and won an All Star in 1989. Down at Heel Productions are bringing the play on tour and look forward to performing at Ballina Arts Centre on Saturday night next. Tickets (€12) can be obtained from the Arts Centre. more common.” The rate of increase in three-bed semidetached home prices in Dublin slowed to 1.5% in the fourth quarter of the year as buyers look to new homes on the horizon. The commuter counties also returned a restricted growth of 1.5% in Q4, and 10% overall for the year, following a relatively static 2016, with the average house now selling for €229,300. Towns throughout the rest of the country saw rises of 2.6% in the fourth quarter with the average three-bed semi now costing €146,633, up 12.3% from €130,600 in December 2016. An increase in mortgageapproved buyers and the Help To Buy Scheme saw first-time buyers return to viewings in force in the last year. However, a shortage of suitable supply caused prices to appreciate, and REA agents in the capital are predicting that new homes will drive a bright outlook for the new year, freeing up some supply of second hand stock in the market.

in Ballina last Thursday week. This was followed by another celebration night at the Fr. Peyton Centre on Sunday evening last (21st), when hundreds had an opportunity to view the video presentation which garnered acclaim far and wide. In her address at the Civic Reception Annie May asked the audience to cast their minds back to that special sunny day in July (’17) and the phenomenal presentation made by the Pride of Place Committee to the POP judges. “No parish could ever match the pride on display that day”, she said. She congratulated the committee. “It took a huge preparation, but it was worth it. Attymass is truly a special place – a parish that has always been ahead of the curve”. She thanked all who had been involved, making Attymass the gem that it is, including those who have passed on. The County Council have also been progressive partners and she thanked her colleagues for what has provided, collectively, for Attymass over the years. “Now that we have secured an All-Ireland and a potential Saint, we can take on the world”, she concluded. Mr. Peter Hynes, Chief Executive of Mayo County Council said Attymass is a parish that has been punching above its weight for a long time, but its dream has now become a reality. It is a special place and the POP
Award is a symbol of achievement after twenty years of hard work. A Report to him from the Chairman of Pride of Place said the presentation was among the best they had ever witnessed; so all involved had to be congratulated for that. Representing the Attymass Pride of Place Committee Dympna Moran thanked Cathaoirleach Annie May Reape for honouring Attymass’s achievement and Mayo County Council for selecting them to represent the county. The success of that special day in July ’17, culminating in the POP Award, is testimony to the work of a lot of people over a number of years. The preparation process brought the community together in a common focus. While this in itself was a prize, winning in Letterkenny was the icing on the cake. She hoped to community would continue to work together to continue the good work, particularly the younger people who were involved; they are the future. The news that Fr. Patrick Peyton has been declared Venerable, one step closer to Sainthood, by Pope Frances, is bonus. Dympna thanked all the committee members and Fr. Steve for producing what has been described as one of the finest video presentations ever seen. She also thanked Cathaoirleach Annie May, Councillors John O’Hara, Neil Cruise and Seamus Weir for their continued support and many others for their help.

Sligo Restaurateur call for pride in Irish food O utspoken restaurateur Anthony Gray reckons that our food is better now than it’s ever been – but the hospitality trade isn’t making the most of it. “Irish food is on the crest of a Wild Atlantic Wave at the moment”, said Gray who is Chairman of Sligo Food Trail and ex President of the Restaurant Association of Ireland, “It’s time to shout Ireland’s food story from the rooftops and make sure the whole world knows about it”. As the owner of two restaurants in Sligo Town, Hooked and Eala Bhán, he’s well placed to know a thing or two about the quality of produce that’s available. Anthony Gray feels that as a country we are inclined to hide our light under a bushel, but unless the hospitality industry makes a concerted effort to evangelise about the superlative quality of Irish food, it will remain a well kept secret. “The days of limited ingredients and cremated meat are gone”, he says, “Today chefs have a choice of outstanding produce and the skill to transform it into consistently excellent dishes. It’s time to hold our heads high, declare provenance and make big claims for Irish food”. The focus of his two restaurants is on local and fresh ingredients and they have no difficulty in sourcing exactly
what they need year round. Our cold Atlantic coastal waters produce a high yield of fresh fish, from salmon to lobster with everything in between. Irish pasture-reared beef and lamb has a flavour unsurpassed anywhere on the planet while the variety of top quality vegetables available has never been better. Gray’s contention is that if we don’t tell this story to visitors and media from around the world, we can’t expect to reap the benefits from it. It’s time to support local, support quality and make claims both proudly and loudly. He is forensic about ensuring that provenance is celebrated on the menus at both Hooked and Eala Bhán, and that his staff know all the answers a curious customer might demand. The culture of the dining customer has changed. Consumers want to know where the ingredients came from. “I see my customer’s eyes light up when I tell them that I was out at the market buying edible flowers or where my cheese is from and who makes my bread. If we all do that we are on the right track to showcase, not just Sligo, but Ireland as a food destination. Ireland is one of the finest food destinations in the world, we just have to tell our story better,” concludes Anthony Gray.

St. Angela’s College offers Bachelor of Applied Science in Nutrition, Food and Business Management
W
ith the rise in popularity of nutrition and healthy foods, the Irish food industry is experiencing a growing demand for skilled graduates to create innovative and nutritious food products that will enhance consumers’ lives. St. Angela’s College, Sligo is now offering a Bachelor of Applied Science in Nutrition, Food and Business Management, a full-time degree accredited by NUI Galway and is inviting applications in view of the upcoming CAO deadline on 1 February 2018. Aimed at students with a strong interest in food, the development of food products, and nutrition and health, the four-year programme provides graduates with a diverse range of both culinary and business skills, such as sensory analysis techniques, food production and new product development, marketing and management. There are currently excellent employment opportunities in the food industry with a shortage of appropriately qualified graduates with expertise in the fields of nutrition, culinary skills and market trends. Previous graduates have found rewarding careers in New Product Development, Quality Assurance, Research and Development, Food Lab Technician and Supervisory/Management Roles within Food Companies. The Bachelor of Applied Science in Nutrition, Food and Business Management seeks to fill this gap in the employment market and further offers graduates the opportunity to pursue studies at Postgraduate, Master and PhD Levels. For more information on course structure and entry requirements visit St. Angela’s College website www.stangelas.nuigalway.ie/nutritionfoodbusiness.

For men, women and couples The 2017 Inspirational Woman of the Year Roisin Keane pictured with event sponsor Therese O’Grady (left) and guest speaker Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin.
G
MIT Social Care graduate Roisín Keane, from Newport, is Mayo’s latest Inspirational Woman. The award, which is now four years in existence, recognises women from Mayo or residing in the county, who have inspired others. Róisín received the award, sponsored by Therese and Paul O’Grady, at a Nollaig na mBan event hosted by Mayo Rape Crisis Centre, held at the Country Lodge Hotel, Westport. Róisín was nominated by her brother, Tomás, for her care for others and her fight for worthy causes. She was instrumental in bringing the White Ribbon Campaign to GMIT and in
helping GMIT become the first White Ribbon Campaign Campus in Ireland. White Ribbon is the world’s largest male-led movement to end men’s violence against women. The campaign came to Ireland in 2010. To gain the status of White Ribbon Institution, GMIT had to adopt a number of criteria. Róisín was pivotal in making this happen and her understanding and passion about the subject is extensive. This year there were six nominees as well as Róisín. They were Natalya Pestova, Ann McMahon, Mary Gibbons, Nancy Glavey, Rita Scott and Keira Keogh. Guest speaker on the day was Aoibhinn Ní Shuilleabhain. The awards
were a fun, celebratory and inspiring event for all the nominees and all the women present. The event is a way for Mayo Rape Crisis Centre to salute and celebrate not only the nominees, but also the creativity, courage and lives of all the women they have worked with since 1994, who have quietly gone back to their families, communities, workplaces and churches. “There are no headlines for most of them. They are challenging the systems that foster sexual violence against anyone is this is one of the unrecognised heroic acts of our time. This is MRCC’s way of celebrating those acts of courage,” said Ruth McNeely of Mayo Rape Crisis Centre.
Councillor Orla Leyden will not seek FF nomination There was much surprise in Roscommon political circles last week when the Cathaoirleach, Cllr Orla Leyden, confirmed she will not be seeking a Fianna Fáil nomination at the party’s forthcoming selection convention. While she said she was grateful for the nomination she made it clear that her main focus was on completing her term as Cathaoirleach. She also said she wouldn’t be imposing herself on the party in the case of an election being held after her term as Cathaoirleach ended in June and she particularly didn’t want to be considered as a token gender candidate. Members of the Fianna Fáil organisation in Roscommon met in the Abbey Hotel in Roscommon Town last week in advance of the party’s anticipated general election selection convention.
The candidates nominated to contest the convention are sitting Deputy Eugene Murphy, Moylough-based Councillor Michael Connolly, Sean Óg Higgins, chairman of the party’s Ógra wing in the county, Cllr John Keogh and Cllr Leyden, who will not be allowing her name go forward. It is expected the party will be selecting its candidates for the election in a matter of weeks. The date for receipt of nominees to contest the convention closed last Friday, January 12th. It’s understood Fianna Fáil party headquarters was in the process of scrutinising the validity of nominations received in advance of last week’s meeting with a local party source claiming a date for the convention was “imminent.” The actual date for the convention will be at the discretion of party headquarters.

I
slandeady native Sr. Maureen Lally, for her work with Tocher Valley Rural Community Network, has been named the Virginia Gallagher Mayo Person of the Year for 2018 by Mayo Association Dublin. She will receive the Virginia Gallagher Award at a gala presentation ceremony, The Yew Tree Ball, in Dublin’s Ballsbridge Hotel on Saturday night, February 10. The recipient of the 2018 Mayo Meitheal Award, sponsored this year by Connolly Motor Group is Comharchumann Forbartha Ionad Deirbhile Teo (CFID), Eachleim, Blacksod for the R116 rescue community effort. The concept of the Meitheal has its roots in the community coming together at harvest time and the application of co-operation to social need. In times of tragedy too, the Meitheal has brought out the best in people and reflected their better natures. The community group that are the recipients of this year’s Meitheal of the Year award epitomise the truest definition of the word
“Meitheal”. Over 100 community volunteers, homeowners, fishermen and farmers, local businesses, sporting & community bodies came together with the Coast Guard, the Gardai, the civil defence, the RNLI, Mayo County Council, Navy Divers, Aer Accident Investigation Unit, Mayo, Galway & Donegal Dive Teams, the Sweeney family of Blacksod Lighthouse, Mayo Mountain Rescue, and many other agencies came together to work as a ‘Meitheal’ for the benefit of the families and searchers for the crew of R116. On day 42 of the huge search, the efforts at Halla Naomh Bhrendáin, on the land and the sea were brought to an end and still gave no closure to the bereaved families. The recipient of the 2018 Young Mayo Person of the Year is Michaela Walsh from Swinford. At 18 years of age Michaela is the flag- bearer for Ireland’s 4,000 year history with the hammer throw. She has set a number of new Irish records for her

age group and has been recognised locally, nationally & internationally, culminating in her winning a bronze medal in the hammer at the European Junior (Under 20) Championships in Grosseto, Italy in 2017. Michaela’s bronze is also the first ever Irish medal in the hammer event at European Championship level. Michaela is currently ranked 2nd on the Irish all-time list for the women’s hammer and 4th in the shot put. The adjudicators said Sr. Maureen Lally, through her quiet influence, relentless positivity and loyalty has contributed much to our native county. In the words of one prominent academic with whom she has worked ‘’ In a world where the loud and boisterous seem to reign supreme, we acknowledge and hail the work of a humble and reserved enabler, a true champion of the people.” The citation stated “She pioneered the Tóchar Valley Rural Community Network (TVRCN) which brought together 18 communities from Balla to Murrisk, and helped to stem the predicted decline of agriculture and rural life in the area. She had a firm belief that no community on its own can achieve as much as a network of communities working together toward shared goals. TVRCN remains a voluntary grassroots rural community network, committed to the empowerment of rural people in the development of sustainable rural communities. She humbly states that the work has been the spark that lights the fire, but not necessarily the fire itself, that Community members themselves fuel the fire” “The TVRCN runs an alcohol
and substance misuse programme, heritage trails, international youth exchanges and has led to significant job creation in the area. TVRCN has strengthened the people’s confidence and belief in themselves. The communities have learnt several ways of advancing their community development efforts and achieving their own vision for the future. They have also acquired the skills and knowhow of envisioning and following through with community goals.” “Sr Maureen also spearheaded the three-day Summer Solstice Walking Festival along the Croagh Patrick Trail beginning in Balla, meandering through the unspoilt landscape and rich heritage of central Mayo. She has been instrumental in bringing the Community Futures programme to Mayo, a proactive process where all community members have a voice in decision making and planned development” Sr Maureen makes Mayo and rural communities an important part of her message and works tirelessly on their behalf. She works hard to keep the community message alive and that shines through all her projects. She is a true ambassador for Mayo. Tickets are now on sale for The Yew Tree Ball which takes place on 10 February on www.mayoassociationdublin.c om . The black tie awards gala will incorporate a prosecco reception with a gin bar sponsored by Connacht Distillery, followed by a 3 course meal. Music on the night will be provided by Ballina band, Flat Out. The Awards will be hosted by MWR host, Angelina Nugent. Contact secretary@mayoassociationdu blin.com for further details.

Cool Trends That Will Hit Your Kitchen in 2018 Dark Plum
Simple Luxury Dark Plum Another color to watch out for is dramatic purple, according to designer Francesco Bilotto. “You’ll see this tone showcased everywhere from kitchen cabinets to foyers,” he says. We’re partial to the dramatic backsplash in this modern space. Two-Tone Cabinets To add character to the 2017 Kitchen of the Year, San Francisco designer Jon de la Cruzused two finishes on the cabinets: weathered white oak and Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White paint in Modern Eggshell. “You see that kind of make-do cobbling together in old kitchens,” he says. Appliance Garages Another way to embrace the minimalist trend: smart storage. Here, San Francisco designer Jon de la Cruz created a home in the 2017 Kitchen of the Year for the toaster and coffeemaker to reduce counter clutter.

PECULIAR LIGHTING
Going bizarre is not surprising anymore; in fact, it has become one of the best techniques to get along with the trending stuff in all aspects and, gladly, interior design was not excluded. Installing peculiar lighting in one of your house’s rooms has become an embraced trend in 2017. Moreover, it is deemed to be the quickest way to revamp your room without having to undergo drastic changes. Accordingly, feel free to go ahead and enjoy installing some few and far between lighting systems around your place to effortlessly make it look trendy.
D
o you know that revamping your house every once in a while is required for your mental health? That may sound a little odd, but it is true; the design of your house play part in changing your mood. Besides, your house is your comfort zone because it is the only place where you get the chance to leave your responsibilities and duties at the threshold of your door, and take some time to rest and relax, shutting the noises of the world out. However, some people are satisfied with just leaving their house just the way it is without changing anything. That may vary from one person to another, but no matter how people may perceive this matter differently, you usually can’t help but fall in love with all the newly launched designs. Even if you are not the type of the person who loves changing their houses’ decoration, your bedroom can be excluded from that equation, especially because it is where you can put your exhausted body at rest or enjoy reading your favorite book on your bed without being interrupted, so it has to be greatly taken care of in order to keep yourself away from falling victim for temporary depression due to your boring environment. That does not mean that you should ignore the rest of your house; above and beyond, your preferred decorations and the way you choose to design your place can reveal a lot about your personality, thoughts, and emotions. Also, getting your home to stay trendy and updated can make you receive a lot of compliments from whoever visits your place and that will definitely boost your mood and elevate your energy level. Everybody surely likes having a place that they dearly love, so they do not find themselves staying outdoors longer that they stay at their own place, so save yourself that trouble by taking care of your home and keeping it trendy. Check out these latest home design trends.
HANGING PENDANTS
Table lamps may be essential for those who love reading before bedtime, but even if you are not a reader, having a dim light in your bedroom is important for creating a relaxing mood. However, you do not have to stick to the norm anymore. If you are up to adding some changes to your bedroom, ditch the table lamps and consider hanging pendant lights near your bed instead. That way, you will give your room a quick trendy revamp and save your nightstand for something else.
DIFFERENT SHADES OF GRAY
Yes, shades of gray have become popular in several industries other than movies, but also in interior designs world. Gray is one of the most special colors since it provides a full scale of different colors starting from the bright ones, close to white, and ending at the other end of the spectrum that features dark shades close to the black. Mixing several shades of this color within your bedroom will effortlessly add a deluxe touch.
GO GREEN
Nature’s color has been making a great appearance among all the trendy designs of home. So, giving your bedroom a nice touch of nature is always a great idea. Not only because it is trendy, but also because it creates a relaxing atmosphere to your room.
THE POWER OF NAVY BLUE
Navy blue has successfully made its way to the top trendiest home designs for 2017. It has become popular in no time since it has been competing with the popularity of black and, gladly, it adds the same elegant and sophistication that the black color adds. Besides, it has been proven to be a great team member since it can greatly partner up with almost any color and still add intricacy to your room.
ROMANTIC VIBES
According to interior designers, there are colors that are deemed to be romantic; these ones have become the new trend in designing bedrooms exceptionally. These colors include raspberry pink, deep ruby red, and caramel; mostly, they are colors that create Valentine’s atmosphere in your room.
HUMAN DOCKING STATIONS
Thanks to the availability of Wi-Fi, you no longer need a home office because you can work anywhere inside your home. For that very reason, interior designers believe that docking stations are what bedrooms need, or anywhere in your house. So, you are able to store your files and printers. Docking Stations have become so trendy and one of the best designs for a nice cozy room.
A TROPICAL SENSE
Prints that feature tropical leaves have become a thing for this year. They add a wonderful jungle touch to your room, creating an illusion of a beautiful forest within the four walls of your bedroom. Above and beyond, these prints are available in several shapes and patterns, giving you the opportunity to choose the one that works perfectly for your place.

Decorating Kid’s Rooms F
or a child, a bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It's a spot to do schoolwork, play games, rough-house, read, daydream, visit with friends and stockpile toys. As you plan out your child's bedroom, you'll need a space that serves all those functions — and is comfortable and practical for several years to come. The ultimate experts on what kids like best are kids themselves, so get them involved in the design process by letting them help with selections. That being said, children's preferences change often, so use accessories and colors that be easily replaced. Overall, whether you're decorating a playroom, bedroom or nursery, be sure to think about fun, growth and practicality. How do I decorate a playroom? A playroom should be very lively and inspirational, so get creative with your color and furnishings. A wall mural or wall decal is a great way to incorporate playful design, while a chalkboard wall lets kids produce their own masterpiece. Try using fun furnishings, like beanbag chairs or floor cushions, and if you want to splurge, add in unique elements like a climbing wall, slide or swing. Because it is a multifunctional room, use space smartly. Install built-in cabinets and shelves for much-needed toy storage, and include a desk or work table for homework and
coloring. A craft station is a great way to get those creative juices flowing, or consider a small snack area with microwave and mini fridge. Divide the space into zones so that quieter kids can draw or read while louder, more active kids can watch tv or play a musical instrument.
Once you've done your homework, it's time to start buying. Of course, a crib and changing table are key purchases, while a rocking chair, baby swing and extra dresser are helpful additions. Be
careful with adding too much furniture though; you want to be sure to leave some floor space for your young one to learn to crawl and walk. When it comes to color, don't feel the need to go with just
standard pink and blue. Yellow, brown and green are all great gender neutral palette choices and will make your nursery stand out from others.
How do I decorate a kids bedroom? When designing a child's room, think about color, color and more color. Incorporate a favorite hue on the walls or bring in bright accents, but stick with neutral furniture that doesn't need to be swapped out as interests change. While the furniture should be appropriate for your child's age, it also should be something that can grow with him or her. Get fullsized dressers and cabinets that can last through the school years, and consider a bunk bed, which is great to share with siblings. As they get older and no longer want to share a room, you can add a desk underneath the top bunk. With so many toys and clothes, storage is key. Add built-ins if you can, but cubbies and shelves are also great for those on a budget. How do I decorate a nursery? In the younger years, safety is crucial. Review the literature on all surfaces and products, and get up to date on product recalls before you make major purchases.
This sweet, galleried play area designed by Trine Miller, has the dual function of creating an adventurous play space, while also keeping toys contained and out of view
Think creatively when it comes to arranging furniture, especially in a shared children's room. Beds don't have to be side by side

Most people overlook key to weight loss
T
he key to weight loss is not what you put into your mouth, but why, US researchers have
said. A lot of people have made a New Year resolution to lose weight, however many will not achieve this and among those who do, the majority will regain the weight they lose. In fact, studies suggest that twothirds of people who lose 5% of their total weight, gain it back, and the more weight a person loses, the lower their chances of keeping it
off. However, according to Dr Diane Robinson, a neuropsychologist at Orlando Health, these figures are not surprising as most people focus on the physical aspects of losing weight, such as diet and exercise, while ignoring the emotional aspect. “There is an emotional component to food that the vast majority of people simply overlook and it can quickly sabotage their efforts. In order to lose weight and keep it off long-term, we need to do more than just think about what we eat, we also need to understand why we’re eating,” she noted. A recent survey of over 1,000

people by Orlando Health found that 31% felt that the biggest barrier to losing weight was a lack of exercise, while 26% blamed their diet. Some 17% blamed the costs associated with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, while 12% said they did not have enough time. Just one in 10 people felt that psychological wellbeing had a key role to play in weight loss. “This may explain why so many of us struggle,” Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that from a very young age, people are emotionally attached to food. For example, as children, we may be given treats to console us when we are sad or reward us when we behave well. Furthermore, many annual celebrations, such as Halloween, Christmas and birthdays, are focused on food. “If we’re aware of it or not, we

are conditioned to use food not only for nourishment, but for comfort. That’s not a bad thing necessarily, as long as we acknowledge it and deal with it appropriately,” Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that when the brain experiences any type of pleasure, whether from food or something else, it reacts in the same way - the brain releases the neurotransmitter, dopamine, which is sometimes referred to as a ‘feel good chemical’. “We feel good whenever that process is activated, but when we start to put food into that equation and it becomes our reward, it can have negative consequences,” she said. Studies have found a link between emotional issues, such as depression and stress, and a higher body mass index (BMI). For example, some people turn to food when they are feeling low.
Dr Robinson offers the following tips to help people recognise the emotional connection they may have to food: -Keep a diary every day, writing down the food you eat and your mood at the time of eating. Look for unhealthy patterns -Identify foods that make you feel good and write down why you eat them. For example, are you eating them because you feel stressed or do they evoke a certain memory Before you eat anything, ask yourself whether you are eating it because you are hungry. If you are not actually hungry, look for the root of your motive. Dr Robinson said that the main aim is to view eating as providing nourishment, not as a reward or coping mechanism. “If getting your body in shape hasn’t work out yet, maybe this time start with your mind,” she added.

Yeats Winter School
P
ost-Christmas season is an odd time of year. After the hecticness of the festivities people are often left unsure of what to do in the cold dark evenings. But for Yeats fans there will be something to keep you occupied. The Yeats Winter School is designed as an interlude, so that visitors can learn more about W.B.Yeats and his family, against the backdrop of the places – from Benbulben to Knocknarea – which inspired them. The aim of the weekend, according to the organisers, is to provide a basis for reading, exploring and thinking about Yeats’s poetry and his brother’s art work, in the place where much of it began. “The Yeats Winter School is a gathering of friends, who share an interest in poetry, history and a love of Sligo,” says Susan O’Keeffe, Director, Yeats Society, Sligo. “In the comfort of the Sligo Park and with Yeats as a companion, what better way to spend a
winter’s weekend. It’s certainly an important part of the Yeats year in the land of heart’s desire.” There will be two guests in attendance over the weekend. Dr. P.J. Mathews, who is an Associate Professor in the School of English, Drama and Film at University College Dublin, and has written widely on Irish literature and theatre. And guest writer Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, who is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest poets in Ireland, also reputed for her dedication and defence of the Irish language. The weekend will begin with an evening reading on Friday, January 26, from Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill. And on Saturday, January 27, Dr. P.J. Mathews will give a lecture on ‘A Family Affair: the Yeats siblings and the Irish Revival’ at 9.30 am. This will be followed by an 11.15 am Lecture by Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill titled ‘Yeats agus an File’ (Yeats and the Poet). After the lectures, there will a
choice between a tour of Yeats Country or a visit to the Model; home of the Niland Collection where the current exhibition will be ‘Turbulence’ including some paintings from Jack B Yeats. There will also be an evening gathering on Saturday for participants to meet informally for poetry, music, storytelling and shared experiences of literature. Attendees are invited to bring their instruments and favourite pieces to share. On Sunday, January 28 at 10.30
am the weekend long event will close with a lecture by Dr. P. J. Mathews on ‘W.B. Yeats and the Ireland of his time’. The event is being run in conjunction with the Sligo Park Hotel. Tickets for the full event including two nights’ bed and breakfast, with dinner on one-night starts at €175 per person sharing. For further information and reservations you can contact Geraldine or Margaret by calling 071 9190400 or emailing sligo@leehotels.com.
There are very few people in Ireland that haven’t been enthralled by the musical phenomenon that is The Dubliners. Fans are in for a treat at Ballina Arts Centre on Friday, 9th Febuary. A special evening, featuring “The Songs and story of the Dubliners” will be of interest to many across North Mayo. We will experience The Liberties, a Dublin-based band (of course) performing the groups’s most popular songs while telling some stories from the lives of Ireland’s much-loved musicians and singers. The Liberties, hosting what is being described as “the only Dubliners sound-alike show” are fine performers in their own right and should draw a full house to the Arts Centre. The show starts at 8 p.m. and tickets €20) are available from the Arts Centre, 096-73593 or www.ballinaartscentre.ie.
Upbeat and emotional night of theatre at Ballina Arts Centre Down at Heel Productions present A Tale of the Expected, a bittersweet comedy by Martina Reilly. Martina is the author of the bestselling novels Things I Want You to Know and the Impac longlisted Something Borrowed. A Tale of the Expected is a sister play to her well-received Breathing Lessons. It will be shown at Ballina Arts Centre on Saturday 28th January, 8pm. A clash of personality, of families and of cultures combine to create an uplifting and emotional night of theatre. Tickets: €12
Little Shop of Horrors Tues 30 Jan – Fri 2 Feb, 8pm €15/12conc @ The Hawk’s Well Theatre In this gleefully gruesome musical, Seymour, a poor florist's assistant, allows his craving for fame and fortune to seduce him into playing nursemaid to an evil man-eating plant. However, the plant's demands for more, more,
more, soon require MORE than Seymour can handle! Laced with dark humour and alluring numbers Little Shop of Horrors, the charmingly tongue in cheek comedy is one of the longestrunning Off-Broadway shows. This school production is not to be missed...just remember, don’t feed the plant!
