he news that more than 20 people – including some with no other illnesses – have died as a result of flu has resulted in the health authorities urging people, particularly in the at risk categories to get the flu vaccine, if they haven’t done so already. The deaths have struck all age groups but have taken the biggest toll on the elderly, according to the latest update from the HSE. Flu is believed to have peaked or is about to, but it will be circulating for another four weeks, HSE public health specialist Dr Kevin Kelleher said last week: “Last week or this week will be the peak,” he said. There has been a slight increase in the overall rate of patients seeking help for flu-like illness. The number of patients admitted to hospital with flu has risen and they are adding to the trolleys crisis which doesn’t seem to be getting any closer to being solved throughout the country. Patients with flu must be isolated, leaving two patients occupying a four bed ward. Luckily there is no evidence that the flu has particularly hit school-children in the north-west but there are several outbreaks in nursing homes. Still, all areas in Ireland are categorised as having “widespread” flu activity, according to latest updates. People in at-risk groups are urged to get vaccinated against influenza and the HSE has urged people to remember it is still not too late to get vaccinated. The at risk groups are targeted because they are more at risk of hospitalisation and death. These include people with chronic heart conditions, chronic liver disease, chronic respiratory disease, renal failure, those with high body mass index and such conditions. Emphasis is also placed on health care workers and carers who are at higher risk of contracting flu and passing it to vulnerable patients. This is complicated by the fact that Influenza B, which is not covered by the flu vaccine, remains the main flu virus circulating followed by the AH3N2 strain, known as the Aussie flu. Although the numbers of people coming down with the virus is high the strain itself is not more severe than last year. In addition to the flu, the trolley crisis is also set to continue for weeks to come, impacting further on surgery for patients on waiting lists.
