hile the government are busy dealing with the latest Budget, schools across the northwest are coping with a shortage of SNAs in the classrooms. At present there are almost 700 Special Needs Assistants and teacher positions unfilled here due to a backlog in Garda vetting.

The knock-on effect of this is that several children have been forced to miss school as there is no SNA available to cater for them.

Under new legislation this is the first year that schools can’t hire anyone who hasn’t been vetted by Gardai.

Gardai have received more than 7,000 vetting applications for teachers and SNA assistants since August, 683 of these are still pending. 389 of the outstanding requests are for Special Needs Assistants, while 294 are for teachers.

They say that most of the outstanding requests have only been received in the last week. The Gardai say 80% of electronic applications are processed within five days, while 80% of paper vetting requests take between four to five weeks.

RTE News reports that this is causing serious problems for schools and some have had to ask children to stay home because there’s no SNA available. To add to the delays that are being experienced If a vetted SNA switches school the vetting must begin again.

One SNA who was spoken to has been vetted a staggering 15 times.

Difficulties are also arising in relation to cover for Special Needs Assistants who are ill, as the school needs to have vetting in place before a substitute can begin work.

You’re Hired! - Some 100 high-tech jobs on offer as companies seek to attract talent to the West

H

igh-tech companies in the West and Mid-West of the country are hiring and have at least 60 jobs currently available across a range of roles, with up to 100 expected to be on offer before the end of the year.

Some companies are hiring multiple developers or IT analysts and recruitment experts say the rate of new ICT roles are increasing each month.

TechWest 2016, which was launched at the PorterShed in Galway City's Innovation District this week, is an event to be held in Dublin that will showcase the jobs on offer in the West and Mid-West regions and outline the benefits to those thinking of making the move from Dublin.

“We envisage that the jobs on offer in these regions will grow closer to 90 – 100 jobs available by the end of the year.

Companies already based here are expanding their IT teams and a number of potential start-ups are looking favourably on these regions for investment,” said Michelle Murphy, Director of Recruitment and HR Services Group Collins McNicholas.

“Counties like Galway, Limerick, Mayo and Clare are seeing a height of activity in the ICT sector and you can now find your perfect career opportunity whilst experiencing a better quality of life by moving to the West or Mid-West,” she added.

headquartered outside Dublin — this free event will be held at the Gibson Hotel in Dublin on Wednesday, October 26, from 5pm - 8pm. The event is being run in conjunction with the Western Development Commission.

The aim of TechWest 2016 is to target people who are open to moving to work in the West and Mid-West and outline the opportunities available to them.

The event will feature a range of speakers including owners of companies looking to hire, people who have set up successful businesses in the regions as well as individuals who have made the move already. They include John Gleeson of General Motors and Martina Power, Vice President at ACI Worldwide, both based in Limerick.

One of the companies attending will be Altocloud, which was co-founded by Dragons Den’s Barry O’Sullivan and has 15 staff in Galway and another four in California.

Speaking at the launch, co-founder and CTO Joe Smyth says the company is planning to increase staff numbers by 20 per cent next year, divided 60/40 between R&D and sales.

“There is a great technology cluster here in Galway city and county where many companies are doing very interesting things in the R&D space. In fact, since the 1970s, Galway has been a place which attracts high-tech companies,

in both IT and MedTech,” said Joe Smyth.

“There is complemented by a vibrant start-up community and the very attractive lifestyle and culture of Galway.

We would love to find people from a range of skills who would like to settle back into the Galway area.”

MC for the night is Samantha McCaughren, Business Editor of the Sunday Independent. Other speakers include representatives from support organisations such as the IDA, Enterprise Ireland, the WDC and Galway’s Portershed & Innovation District.

Importance of mouth guards for kids highlighted One in five will experience dental trauma

Parents are being reminded to always make sure their children wear properly fitting mouth guards when playing contact sports.

According to Dr Anne O’Connell, a consultant in paediatric dentistry and director of the Trauma Clinic at Dublin Dental University Hospital, one in five children and teenagers will experience a dental trauma, i.e. an injury to teeth, often as a result of an accident.

She pointed out that when playing contact sports, many children wear mouth guards that do not fit properly, which compromises their ability to provide effective protection.

“A good fitting mouth guard will cover all the teeth onto the gum and should not drop when speaking. Unfortunately too many children here are using ill-fitting mouth guards. For example many of the ‘boil and bite’ type are not being heated appropriately and are failing to cover the teeth or are loose,” she explained.

She also highlighted the fact that dental trauma does not just occur during sporting sessions.

“In Ireland, one in four pre-schoolers has a dental trauma and children who have had an injury or who have prominent teeth may also need to wear mouth guards depending on the organised activity. It’s also important that toddlers who have had a dental trauma are assessed on an ongoing basis as their permanent teeth may be affected,” she noted.

“The sporting bodies such as rugby, hockey and GAA all deserve praise for making ‘no mouth guard, no play’ mandatory policy. Children who are very active in other sports or who have already had trauma should also wear mouth guards. Parents need to play their part and ensure their children have effective dental protection,” Dr O’Connell added.

High Hopes Choir to headline at Sligo International Choral Festival

I

reland’s first homeless choir — the High Hopes Choir — is to take centre stage as it headlines the Sligo International Choral Festival.

Some 80 homeless people from the three High Hopes choirs, based in Dublin, Cork and Waterford, will travel to Sligo for the event. “We are delighted to announce, on World Homeless Day, that the High Hopes Choir will join us at the Sligo International Choral Festival for their first ever performance in Sligo,” says Sean Larkin, Festival Chairman. The Sligo Choral Festival Committee are working to provide accommodation for the High Hopes choirs and are asking members of the public to help with the costs through donations.

“We look forward to the 80-strong choir joining us and we will be providing accommodation for them. We are looking for donations in order to help us fund the visit from this inspirational choir and are asking members of the public to help.”

The High Hopes Gala Concert will take

place at 8pm on Friday, November 11 at the Knocknarea Arena at IT Sligo and will mark the start of the three-day international choral festival. A civic reception to welcome the choir to Sligo is also being planned. The festival, which runs from November 11 – 13, includes competitive and non-competitive singing across a wide range of styles, ages and ensembles —from school choirs and jazz orchestras to gospel and barbershop choirs.

Some 58 entries from Irish and international choirs have been received for the competitions, which run across two days of the festival. But the singing will also spill out onto the street with pop-up performances springing up around Sligo town throughout the festival.

The High Hopes Choir is Ireland’s first choir to be made up of people directly affected by homelessness. Founded by David Brophy, former principal conductor of RTÉ Concert Orchestra, the choir aims to help change the public perception of what

it means to be homeless in Ireland today.

Its members volunteer their time to raise funds to help the services and facilities, which play a vital part in ending the cycle of homelessness.

High Hopes has three regional choirs, in Dublin, Waterford and Cork. Each choir has a musical director, and a co-ordinator from one of the charities it works with.

“The High Hopes Choir has truly touched hearts. Music has the power to give a voice to the voiceless. Every song tells a story and every single member of the High Hopes Choir has a story to tell — a story that may contain unfathomable loneliness but it also contains courage and faith and strength and honour. It’s also a story that conveys remarkable hope,” says Glenn Alexander, who is the overall co-ordinator for the High Hopes choir.

In December 2014, the choir was the subject of a three-part documentary called High Hopes, which aired on RTÉ. It recorded a version of Kodaline’s High Hopes with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, which it then performed live on the Late Late Show, and reached Number One in the charts.

Over the last two years, the choir has performed for the President at Aras an Uachtaráin, at a charity gala concert in Christchurch Cathedral, twice at Electric Picnic and at the Aviva Stadium for the Ireland versus Italy Six Nations match in March this year. Tickets to the Gala Concert, on Friday, November 11 gp on sale today at www.sligochoralfest.com and will be available from tourist offices nationwide and in Liber bookshop in Sligo town from Friday, October 14.

Hundreds of children waiting in pain - Lack of staff to deal with childhood arthritis Hundreds of children with the painful joint condition, arthritis, are being left languishing on waiting lists due to a severe lack of appropriate staff, Arthritis Ireland has warned.

According to the charity, 565 children are currently waiting to see a consultant paediatric rheumatologist for the treatment of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) - the most common form of arthritis found in children. However, there are only two consultant paediatric rheumatologists appointed for the entire country.

Furthermore, waiting lists for young people have jumped this year, with the number of children waiting in pain for at least 18 months to be seen by a doctor, having increased by 400% since January of this year.

Over 1,200 children of all ages are

affected by arthritis in Ireland, however the paediatric rheumatology service at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin (OLCHC) simply does not have enough staff to deal with the numbers waiting to be seen. While there is no cure for arthritis, children can have a normal and active life if they receive the correct standards of care.

However in Ireland, children with suspected arthritis are being left for more than a year-and-a-half before being seen. The British Society for Paediatric and Adolescent Rheumatology (BSPAR) recommends that children with suspected arthritis must be seen by a paediatric rheumatology team within four weeks of a referral being made.

“Ireland has only two paediatric rheumatology consultants and we are ranked as having one of the lowest number of paediatric rheumatologists in Europe.

Arthrits Ireland has described this as a ‘national crisis’. It is calling for the urgent appointment of a third consultant paediatric rheumatologist at OLCHC to help tackle the waiting lists there.

“Children on waiting lists are not just waiting in pain, they are also at risk of permanent, irreversible joint damage that impacts on their ability to live as normal a life as possible,” the charity said.

If left untreated, this condition can quickly lead to permanent joint damage, muscle wastage and deformity, not to mention the trauma a child and its family experiences. Children deserve better,” commented Arthritis Ireland CEO, John Church.

The charity is highlighting this issue as part of National Arthritis Week, which runs from October 10-16.

New Technology Gateway to aid Regional Business

n exciting new gateway of opportunity for developing businesses in the precision engineering, manufacturing and materials sectors was officially opened on Friday at the Institute of Technology, Sligo with the formal opening of the new Precision Engineering and Manufacturing (PEM) Technology Gateway.

Funded by Enterprise Ireland, the PEM Technology Gateway was launched by the Minister of State for Employment and Small Business, Pat Breen T.D. The PEM Gateway provides a resource network targeted at companies based both in the North West and nationally. It aims to give companies an opportunity to develop their business through collaborative research and development while networking with other businesses in the area.

The network has a particular focus on start-ups and SMEs, enabling companies to source technology solutions for their ‘close-to-market’ needs.

The Technology Gateway Programme was established by Enterprise Ireland (EI) to provide business development resources to the Institutes of Technology to help them interact with industry on a local, regional and national basis. As part of this network IT Sligo is receiving €275,000 over a two-year period (Jan 1, 2016 – Dec 31st 2017) from EI. Gearoid Mooney, Divisional Manager Research & Innovation, Enterprise Ireland said: “Since its formation in 2013, the Enterprise Ireland Technology

Gateway Programme has created a nationwide network of 15 industry focused Gateways located in 11 Institutes of Technology.

“The PEM Gateway now established in IT Sligo is a significant addition to this network, delivering high tech innovative solutions in precision engineering,

manufacturing and materials. The Technology Gateways have a proven track record of working seamlessly with industry and the PEM Gateway will further incentivise business ideas with potential for growth in the North West region, providing access points to companies of all sizes, particularly startups and SME’s.”

The new President of IT Sligo, Dr Brendan McCormack, said the new Technology Gateway was an endorsement of region’s expertise and heritage in precision engineering, tool making and manufacturing over the past forty years, and also represented another pillar in the collective industry ambition for region to establish a world class Centre of Excellence in the manufacturing of precision engineered products.

“The North West of Ireland is striving to build an economic base that will provide livelihoods for its people and that will support vibrant communities across the region,” he said.

“It is our responsibility to help ourselves and to develop strategies which will be build up the region and help create an environment which entices our future younger generations to stay and work in the region.”

The new PEM Technology Gateway at IT Sligo will be managed by Alan Hernon, whose main role will be to secure, manage and successfully deliver industry projects and solutions for the Technology Gateway industrial partners.

Ballina event heralds All-Ireland strategy for major global sports charities Aiden O’Shea

O

NCE again Ballina is about to become a focus of attention. Next week, on October 20th, a major event will take place to announce an All-Ireland strategy for two global sports charities – Active Communities Network and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation – and their partnerships with the Mary Robinson Centre and local sports clubs.

The event will be attended by All-Blacks Rugby legend Sean Fitzpatrick, history making Jockeys Sir AP McCoy and Hayley Turner, Mayo GAA star Aidan O’Shea and other sports stars to be announced later.

Many of them are already key supporters of the partnership and have been involved in various events previously and the organisations are extremely grateful for their support.

Major sports brands and charities also attending will include Crystal Palace FC, the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, Jason Roberts Foundation and the Golf Trust with more to be announced nearer the date.

hirty-eight (38) Irish tourism enterprises, including Glen Keen sheep farm in Louisburgh, travelled to London this week, to take part in Flavours of Ireland 2016. Flavours is Tourism Ireland’s annual B2B tourism workshop, now in its 14th year, which saw some 100 representatives of the top inbound tour operators based in Britain come together to do business with the various tourism organisations from Ireland.

Flavours of Ireland aims to grow our share of the huge worldwide travel market. Attended by representatives of top UK inbound tour operators, who are responsible for putting in place the arrangements for holidaymakers to Britain and the island of Ireland from all over the

world, this event was an excellent opportunity for the participating Irish tourism providers to highlight and sell their product to these important decision-makers and to encourage them to feature the island of Ireland in their 2017 holiday programmes.

David Boyce, Tourism Ireland, said: “Tourism Ireland is delighted that so many tourism organisations from around the island of Ireland and so many of the leading UK inbound tour operators took the time to join us at our Flavours event again this year. We very much welcome the business and networking opportunities it presented. Our aim is to increase awareness of the island of Ireland among these hugely influential tour operators and to help Ireland and

our tourism partners secure a greater share of the huge worldwide tourism market.”

David Boyce continued: “Figures issued by the CSO last week indicate that we are heading for another record-breaking year for Irish tourism in 2016, with more than 6.55 million people arriving during the January to August period – an increase of +12%, or more than 700,000 extra overseas visitors when compared to the same eight-month period in 2015.

We are determined to ensure that tourism growth continues. We have a really extensive autumn campaign in full swing right now – aimed at boosting late-season travel to Ireland from around the globe.”

Busy October at Ballina Arts Centre Portraits by John Butler Yeats from the Niland Collection These are selected works from The Niland Collection, on loan from The Model, home of The Niland Collection, Sligo. Portraits is an exhibition of just under twenty portraits by John Butler Yeats. Mostly executed in pencil, the portraits have as their subjects many important figures from early 20th Century Irish life.

through Cheerios Childline Breakfast helps ensure Childline is there for children, every day – and night.

Childline answers over 1,000 calls from children all over Ireland, every single day, and night. Children call Childline to talk about everything from everyday troubles to major life issues, with thousands of calls every year from children experiencing issues such as loneliness, isolation, bullying, distress and abuse. Last year, Childline answered 421,672 calls to the phone service and 18,304 conversations to its Childline online service options. Last

year, the Childline Breakfast raised over €230,000 for the charity. Pieta House provides a free, therapeutic approach to people who are in suicidal distress or engaging in self harm.

the Chambers Ireland Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Awards.

The 13th annual CSR Awards was held in the Double Tree Hilton, Dublin on September 1 and was attended by representatives from over 30 companies, which were shortlisted for awards across 10 categories.

Pieta House has been in existence

Pieta House employs 180 people and its goal is to have a support centre within 100km of every person in Ireland.

Mulranny Tourism gets top award for being responsible Mulranny Tourism (Mayo) scooped the top award in the prestigious 2016 Irish Responsible Tourism Awards announced last week at an awards ceremony at the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Golden Lane, Dublin 8.

The awards are a response to demand from the Irish trade for a new type of awards showcasing the best in Irish responsible tourism. The 2016 Irish Responsible Tourism Awards aim to inspire replication, to excite media interest, to encourage competition

and celebration from across the tourism industry on the island of Ireland.

Mulranny took gold in the Best Destination for Tourism Section and later took the overall award. Westport Smarter Travel Buffe (Mayo Co. Council) took silver in the Best Local Authority Section, while Burren Nature Sanctuary (Galway) took Silver in the Natural Heritage Tourism Section.

Awards are part of a growing family of worldwide responsible tourism awards which are all linked to the World Responsible Tourism Awards, founded by responsibletravel.com. Winners of each of the categories will be longlisted for the World Responsible Tourism Awards - a great opportunity for the Irish trade to raise international awareness.

The shortlist for the awards, which attracted entries from almost every county in Ireland, was announced in early September following assessment by a panel of industry experts chaired by international responsible tourism expert Professor Harold Goodwin.

The Award should be a great boost for Mulranny, a beautiful part of the West.

1. Take a stroll in Ely Lodge Forest...

Ely Lodge Forest is a pretty quiet place, not very well known by tourists and located only a few kilometres from Enniskillen. Note that the forest extends over 250 ha by the Lough Erne, and its planting began in 1940.

s a dentist I spend a large part of my life dealing with the consequences of dental disease. Yet I have always felt that so much more could be done to prevent, rather than treat, dental problems. One of the most fundamental aspects of dental care is the art of toothbrushing. Cleaning teeth well on a daily basis is one of the keys to maintaining good oral health. The vast majority of people do brush on a daily basis, but not as effectively as would be ideal.

The first step in good brushing is quite simply to use a good brush. There are a great many toothbrushes on the market, but remembering one or two simple principles will aid in choosing the right one. Firstly, choose a brush with a small head. This will make it easier to manoeuvre the brush in the mouth and reach the awkward areas at the back.

Secondly, pick a brush with soft bristles.

The ideal brushing technique involves gums as well as teeth. Brushing with a hard brush can physically damage the gum, thus a soft brush is better.

Many people also now use electric toothbrushes and they are certainly effective. The movement of the brush head removes plaque very well.

However, I have found that a lot of people do not like the sensation which the vibration of the head produces.

Ultimately it doesn't really matter whether an electric or a manual brush is

used, provided it is used correctly.

The best technique for brushing takes a little patience and time, but undoubtedly repays the effort. It doesn't matter whether one begins on left or right or top or bottom. However, a brush will automatically go to the left side for righthanded people, and vice versa. Equally it is unimportant whether one starts with the upper or the lower teeth.

Start at the back corner of the last tooth on the side next to the cheek. The brush should then be moved in a gentle circular massaging motion. This should cover all of the surface of the tooth and bring the brush around in contact with the gum level. The idea is to remove the plaque in contact with both the tooth and the gum.

Move around the mouth actively concentrating on one tooth at a time.

When you reach the last tooth on the opposite side, move to the inside of the teeth next to the tongue. Now work your way back around concentrating on one tooth at a time. Finally brush over the biting surfaces of the teeth.

The entire process can now be repeated for the teeth on the opposite arch.

Brushing in this way carried out twice a day will clean plaque away very effectively. To brush both upper and lower teeth in this way takes 3 minutes.

That doesn't sound long, but it is amazing how long it actually is. It is worthwhile bringing a watch into the bathroom with you and timing yourself brushing. You will be surprised at how long 3 minutes actually is. However, nothing will pay you back as well as those 6 minutes spent every day.

is a key tourist attraction in the Lakeland district. Devenish Island contains substantial remains of Lough Erne's most important island monastery. The remains included a Romanesque Church, a 12th century round tower, a priory church, a round tower and several crosses. St. Molaiste founded it in the 6th century on an historic pilgrim route to Croagh Patrick. Built on the beautiful Devenish Island, visitors can reach the monastery by ferry from Trory Point, a mile outside of Enniskillen. Tully Castle is the impressive remains of a fortified house, first documented in 1619 and built by the Hume family. The stronghold has a typically Scottish Tshaped plan, with a square wing projecting from the south-side. Set near the village of Blaney on the southern shore of Lough Erne, the two story house with rectangular bawn is not far from Enniskillen town.

Marble Arch Caves are one of Europe's finest show caves and allows visitors to explore a fascinating natural underworld of rivers, waterfalls, winding passages and lofty chambers and more importantly stalagmites and stalagtites. Located at Florenscourt, The Marble Arch Caves complex has great visitor facilities too.

History of Enniskillen Enniskillen is the original seat of the Gaelic Maguire chieftains, who were the first inhabitants of Enniskillen Castle, captured by England in 1607. The conflict was part of a wider campaign to bring the province of Ulster under English control. Over the years, Enniskillen was the scene of conflict and sieges.

As a direct result, the town not only developed as a market town, but also as a garrison, which became home to two regiments. Enniskillen Castle is the earliest building in the town, built in the 15th century by Hugh the Hospitable. The castle, nestled upon the banks of Fermanagh's lakeland, was the stronghold of the junior branch of the Maguires and represents an important part of Fermanagh's rich history and heritage. The first watergate is believed to have been built in 1580 and the medieval keep dates back to the 15th century.

Later a 17th century watergate and 19th century barracks were added to the Castle. Today, the castle houses the county museum collection.

Enniskillen as a tourist resort Enniskillen is a great base for touring around the Lakeland's and attracts tourists from all over the world to its beautiful landscape.

Fermanagh Lakeland Tourism was established in 1999 and since then has been busy marketing the region as Ireland's premier, quality, natural lakeland destination, whilst highlighting a wide range of tourist activities, attractions and wealth of heritage and culture. Tourists to the area can visit a spectre of historic and natural beauty sites. Lough Navar scenic drive has spectacular cliff drop views, which sweep across Lough Erne and the Donegal mountains. The breathtaking views make it an unforgettable experience for visitors. Devenish Monastic Site

is a key tourist attraction in the Lakeland district. Devenish Island contains substantial remains of Lough Erne's most important island monastery. The remains included a Romanesque Church, a 12th century round tower, a priory church, a round tower and several crosses. St. Molaiste founded it in the 6th century on an historic pilgrim route to Croagh Patrick. Built on the beautiful Devenish Island, visitors can reach the monastery by ferry from Trory Point, a mile outside of Enniskillen. Tully Castle is the impressive remains of a fortified house, first documented in 1619 and built by the Hume family. The stronghold has a typically Scottish Tshaped plan, with a square wing projecting from the south-side. Set near the village of Blaney on the southern shore of Lough Erne, the two story house with rectangular bawn is not far from Enniskillen town.

Marble Arch Caves are one of Europe's finest show caves and allows visitors to explore a fascinating natural underworld of rivers, waterfalls, winding passages and lofty chambers and more importantly stalagmites and stalagtites. Located at Florenscourt, The Marble Arch Caves complex has great visitor facilities too.

History of Enniskillen Enniskillen is the original seat of the Gaelic Maguire chieftains, who were the first inhabitants of Enniskillen Castle, captured by England in 1607. The conflict was part of a wider campaign to bring the province of Ulster under English control. Over the years, Enniskillen was the scene of conflict and sieges.

As a direct result, the town not only developed as a market town, but also as a garrison, which became home to two regiments. Enniskillen Castle is the earliest building in the town, built in the 15th century by Hugh the Hospitable. The castle, nestled upon the banks of Fermanagh's lakeland, was the stronghold of the junior branch of the Maguires and represents an important part of Fermanagh's rich history and heritage. The first watergate is believed to have been built in 1580 and the medieval keep dates back to the 15th century.

Later a 17th century watergate and 19th century barracks were added to the Castle. Today, the castle houses the county museum collection.

Tumble Driers Tumble driers are energy guzzlers so try to use washing lines or airers.

Don't put very wet clothing into the dryer, make sure you wring clothing out or spin dry again to help use less energy.

Fridges/Freezers These are the most hardworking appliances in the home.

Avoid putting Warm or Hot Foods in the fridge, let them cool down first. Don't leave the Fridge or Freezer door open, this means the fridge uses more energy to cool itself back down due to the cool air lost opening the door.

Switching Energy Supplier In the current rising trend of energy prices it could well be worth shopping around to save money on your energy bills, further discounts are available if you switch both gas & electricity to the same supplier. It is a simple process and there is no disruption to your existing energy supply.

Light bulbs If you use a particular light for an average of four hours or more a day, then replace it with an energy-saving equivalent - which will use around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer.

Each energy efficient bulb fitted could give you an estimated saving of €10.50 off your energy bill per year.

Kettles Heat the amount of water you really need and if you're using an electric kettle, make

sure you cover the elements. More modern kettles have no visible element so you use less water, you could also try to fill a cup and use it as a guide to fill the kettle, so that you boil the right amount of water.

Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows.

Take care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows.

Heating Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off your heating bills.

You can also save on running costs by heating your home for an hour less each day.

Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set.

Standby can use as much as 10%-60%of the electricity that would be used by the device if it was switched on. Also don't forget to turn your Computer monitor off, as it too wastes electricity if left on.

reland is known to be a nation of drinkers with almost 18% having a drink on a daily basis at a level that is considered risky.

But the ill-effects of such behaviour extend to binge drinking, impacts on health and well-being, assaults drink driving with resulting car accidents and many others.

Various governments and organisations have launched campaigns and policies to combat problem drinking.

But there might be another way to tackle the problems related to the over-consumption of alcohol that doesn’t require large-scale government intervention.

Install an app When it comes to overcoming bad behavioural habits, such as drinking too much, technology can help by providing a subtle and more personalised solution to the problem.

Smartphone apps can provide real-time intervention on the go.

They allow people to get the right information at the right time regarding their drinking habits.

Popular alcohol control apps include examples such as Stop Drinking with Andrew Johnson (for Apple or Android) which relies on relaxation and hypnotism and other apps which simply count the intake of alcohol (Sobriety Counter is one such app for Android).

Such mediated, anonymous and indirect interaction can also help people suffering from a drinking problem who are otherwise reluctant to visit rehabilitation and facility centres.

In this way technology can facilitate a change in behaviour through persuasion but not coercion.

This is known as persuasive technology, a term originally coined by Stanford University researcher BJ Fogg.

Such technologies have already helped with other problems, such as obesity, bullying and racism by motivating people, providing knowledge, supporting decision making and ultimately facilitating behaviour change.

technology in mitigating the harmful side effects of alcohol and other bad habits.

There are a number of web and mobile applications that help people with their alcohol intake. But web-based applications usually cannot be accessed at a user’s own discretion as they require some form of synchronisation with the user’s phone.

Which app is best?

While mobile apps may be best suited to tackle drinking problems there isn’t much of an understanding as to which are more suitable or what features people prefer.

The National Health Service in the UK does provide a list of apps that can assist in tackling health related problems. But there is no government or other reputable organisation that maintains a similar list in Ireland.

There are some online rankings of alcohol control apps, but these are not maintained by official health services.

This motivated us to analyse more than 200 user reviews of apps available on the iTunes store so we could better establish design recommendations for such apps. through behavioural change strategies. We specifically excluded apps that were purely for facilitating alcohol intake, such as alcohol recipe apps.

We noticed that there were two main types of strategies that were prevalent in such apps.

Some used motivation and others self-control to help reduce or monitor alcohol intake. The former rely on different persuasive strategies such as

praise and reward mechanism, social interaction with avatars, competitions, reminders and notifications, etc.

Information, such as blood alcohol concentration levels. Selfcontrol apps do not explicitly inform the user when their alcohol intake crosses a level of high risk.

What users want Our results showed that users preferred self-control apps, possibly because they did not want to be controlled by an app that was too insistent or fast in its interaction.

Users not only preferred gradual notifications from the apps but they also wished to have full control over how the app interacted with them. We found that a key design guideline for these apps is the ability to customise the way users interact with them.

We noticed that a number of users preferred apps that provided incremental targets.

This allows them to attain positive milestones on each step of the behavioural change process. A number of users also stated the importance of sharing their progress on social media.

Implementing persuasive applications is a fraught with challenges, particularly for contexts such as alcohol intake, where real-time monitoring can be difficult.

But there is great potential to use mobile technology to promote positive alcohol behavioural change, particularly if the apps follow certain design features.

If the appropriate governmental authorities can benchmark and recommend apps based on the proposed guidelines, that will go a long way in assisting many in overcoming their alcohol related problems.
