T still remains one of the biggest problems across the country at Christmas time – those who take the risk and “chance it” by driving home after a few drinks. Similarily, there are those who decide to drive the morning after having a feast of drink at parties and other festive season meet-ups. A new AA Survey reveals that one in five people have driven their car not knowing if they were over the limit from the night before. Also, nearly 10% of those surveyed admitted they had knowingly been a passenger in a car in which the driver was severely hung over. These were the key findings of the research which asked over 6,400 if they had run the risk of driving the morning after a night out in the last 12 months. Warning drivers not to run the risk the AA says: “While the majority of us would never think of drinking and driving on the same night, we often forget that alcohol can continue to impact on your concentration, reaction times and driving ability into the following day, depending on how much you have consumed.” The Road Safety Authority says that the calculation is simple: “It takes your body roughly one hour to get rid of one standard drink. That’s one hour for a half a pint, or a small glass of wine or a pub measure of spirits, and two hours for a pint to be eliminated from your body. The secret to sobering up is TIME – no amount of coffee, energy drinks, cold showers or breakfast rolls will speed up the process. Every year, hundreds of people are prosecuted for driving while still over the limit on weekend mornings. According to Gardai alcohol was a factor in two in five fatal crashes in November and December over the last eight years and almost half of those killed during this period were drivers. Speaking recently, Assistant Commissioner Michael Finn said 14 people had been arrested for drink driving on Christmas Day last year and 50 were arrested on New Years Day. The AA have also revealed that over the same period in the eight years 11% of fatal collisions in which a driver had consumed alcohol occurred between the hours of 7am and 11am. For most of us these figures are, thankfully, just statistics. Continued on Page 2.

Attymass - A proud achievement

TTMASS, a community close to Ballina town, has always demonstrated a high level of community pride and on the 2nd of December in the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal, community representatives from the village were duly rewarded for their endeavors. They were presented with the top award in the IPB Pride of Place Competition for a community with a population below 300. Sponsored by IPB Insurance the awards acknowledge the achievements and the invaluable work undertaken by volunteers and those involved in local community development. It celebrates community contributions to local society and the creation of civic pride. It focuses on local people coming together to shape, change and enjoy all that is good about their local area. Recently, the local community in Attymass had demonstrated their undoubted community spirit in an outstanding

presentation to the Pride of Place judges prompting the following remarks: “This amazing small rural community immediately impressed the judges with a fantastic welcome in a wonderful centre that is essential to the life of the community. The judges regarded the presentation on the day as one of the best they had ever witnessed. The sense of pride demonstrated in every aspect of community life - history, heritage, culture, international connections, excellent high quality amenities emanating from the extraordinary efforts of the community left the judges very clear that this community had indeed Pride in their Place.” Dympna Moran, liaison officer for Attymass Pride of Place, expressing her delight at the outcome, was happy that the community’s work had paid off and Attymass had now achieved national recognition for its community spirit – a huge achievement for such a small community.

Padraig Walsh, manager of the Fr. Peyton Centre, said the win was a major boost for the area and testimony to the hard work and community spirit exhibited by the local people. The committee are grateful to Mayo County Council staff, local representatives – particularly Councillor John O’Hara who prompted Attymass to enter the competition – and many others for their support. It was, indeed, a proud night for Attymass and will, most likely, provide the stimulus for further progress within the parish. During the ceremony 49 awards were announced in the main competition, the cities competition and special awards, ranging from groups supporting small rural communities to those involved in large inner city housing estates. Donegal County Council hosted the evening and celebrated Irish musicians Donal Lunney and Paddy Glackin entertained the audience before the winners were announced. RTE presenter Aengus MacGrianna was MC for the ceremony, which was attended by over 800 people. The Pride of Place competition was initiated 15 years ago through a Cooperation Ireland programme to acknowledge the invaluable work undertaken by communities and groups across the island of Ireland. It has grown into the largest competition recognising community development achievements. The community spirit was demonstrated again on Thursday night (Dec. 7th) during a special “Christmas All Wrapped Up” food and cookery demo in the local community centre where local chef Ronan Fox, in addition to cooking, demonstrated what goes on in the area and why Attymass is such a good place to live or holiday in. The event was streamed live on Facebook . . . telling the world about the unique village of Attymass. Look out for Attymass feature in the January issue of Mayo Now magazine.

But not so for the thousands who have been impacted by the tragedy of road deaths. Already this year over 143 people have lost their lives on the road. The impact on the families and the communities concerned has been nothing short of staggering. As Professor Denis Cusack, director of the Medical Bureau of Road Safety said: “Legislation and enforcement can only do so much – people need to take responsibility for their actions.”

Castlebar’s National Learning Network students receive awards MORE than 50 students of National Learning Network (NLN) in Castlebar have been recognised for their impressive endeavours and commitment to their studies throughout their time in NLN Castlebar. The Breaffy House Hotel was the venue for the inspirational certification ceremony on Monday, which was attended by Minister Michael Ring. Students who attend the National Learning Network, which is a division of the Rehab Group, received their certificates in recognition of their achievements on training programmes which aim to develop the students’ personal, social, educational and vocational skills, as well as aiming to increase their levels of independence and community integration. Several NLN students, both past and

present, as well as their friends and family, also attended the inspirational event and acknowledged the hard work made by students receiving awards. Matthew Foy, who was a student on the Employer Based Training programme, spoke proudly of his achievements and the benefits he has felt having completed the course. “I spent 15 months in NLN and I enjoyed every minute of it. I gained so much confidence on a personal level from Caroline my instructor, and my fantastic class mates whom I have made lifelong friends with.” He added: “After leaving NLN I worked alongside Aisling in Employability and she secured me employment in Elverys warehouse where I am currently working

during a very busy Christmas period. If it wasn’t for NLN I would not be where I am today.” Minister Ring had high praise for all of the students receiving their certificates and Mr. Peter Dooley, National Learning Network area manager, said that he was proud of what the students had accomplished. Representatives from the Rehab Group, HSE and Mayo, Sligo AND Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB) attended the momentous occasion. isling Heeran, a student of Trinity College Dublin, and native of Drumshanbo, County Leitrim, has been awarded the ‘Jane Grimson Medal of Excellence’ from the Irish Research Council.

Four early-career researchers were awarded ‘Medals of Excellence’ and were presented as the Council marks 15 years of the Irish Research Council and its forebears, the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences

and the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology. The ‘Medals of Excellence’ have been named after previous Chairs of the Irish Research Council and recognise excellence in the 2017 postgraduate and postdoctoral funding calls run by the Council in both science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) fields and the arts, humanities and social sciences (AHSS). Chair of the Irish Research Council, Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, congratulated the awardee: “I am delighted to congratulate Ms Aisling Heeran on receiving her Medal of Excellence. “Ms Heeran received the award for being the top-ranked postgraduate researcher in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics category, with her research in investigating the clinical relevance of the radiationinduced bystander effect in rectal cancer patients. “This year is a milestone year for the Irish Research Council and its forebears as we are celebrating 15 years of funding excellent research across all disciplines. “Over the past 15 years, the Council have awarded 7,776 researchers across all disciplines of research. Having a vibrant research community – and strong public support for research – is now more important than ever before. “I would like to take this opportunity to commend all of the previous Council Chairs, members, Directors and staff of the Irish Research Council and its forbears and would like to wholeheartedly acknowledge their respective contributions to the work of the Council,” said Professor O’Ohlmeyer.

Aras Attracta under pressure

HE future looks ominous for Aras Attracta in Swinford unless serious improvements are made. HIQA told the HSE it will move next February to close Áras Attracta unless repeated failures to upgrade the service it provides are addressed. While the HSE welcomed the report – an overview of HIQA’s ‘monitoring activity’ since the dramatic RTÉ Prime Time Investigates revelations in December 2014 – it also acknowledged delays in the ‘process of decongregation’, or the process of moving residents to alternative care settings in the community. Senator Conway-Walsh said: “Throughout the period of the improvement plan, HIQA said they had seen evidence of a range of actions being initiated and significant additional resources being allocated across the three centres. However, quite worryingly the Chief Inspector found limited progress and improvement overall on the campus. “Through their inspections HIQA found that the HSE was consistently failing to appropriately address the institutional model of care, centralised care practices, safeguarding issues and lack of opportunities for residents’ personal development and growth on the campus.” She added: “It is a damning indictment of the HSE that in three years of implementing an improvement plan, they have failed to rectify a range of serious issues at the Áras Attracta campus and have put extremely vulnerable patients at risk.”

Welcoming last week’s HIQA report, the HSE noted that ‘while progress has been made at Áras Attracta’ with the staff being ‘caring and respectful in their roles’ and addressing the ‘general health and wellbeing of residents’, there were still outstanding issues to be addressed. The body said that ‘the single most significant thing’ it could do to address the

concerns raised by HIQA is to ‘accelerate the process of de-congregation’. “We remain absolutely resolute in our efforts to improve services for residents and to expedite the move to community living and will continue to work with HIQA in that regard,” said Tony Canavan, Chief Executive of the Galway, Mayo Roscommon HSE area.

ount Falcon Estate, close to Ballina town, played host to a historic event organised by the Moy Catchment Association last night. The event, billed as the Moy Trust Expo, brought together both community and government agencies who listened to presentations on the process involved in the formation of a river trust, the benefits to all and the fact that involving local communities breeds success by ensuring increased awareness and greater education. It was a high profile event, attended by large numbers of people throughout the evening. Commere for the event, Angelina Nugent, carried out her role to perfection, introducing speakers, as well as taking time to interview representatives from different community and government agencies about the potential benefits from developing a trust. This awareness event was opened by Councillor Michael Smyth who spoke positively about the council’s role so far and the commitment they were willing to give in support of the plans to form a trust.

The Moy Catchment Association (M.C.A.) chairperson, Jim Wilson, provided some background on how the Expo event came about. He was followed by Ray Spain, the regional director for the waters and communities office. Ray outlined the office’s role in facilitating communities to take a greater role in water quality resulting in healthy waters and vibrant communities. He went on to mention funding streams now available through the waters and communities office (L.A.W.C.O.) for community projects focused on improving water quality. Hugh Bonner from Mara Media, which publishes Ireland West airport magazine as well as various fishing publications, spoke about the potential that exists to develop the Moy Valley as a tourist destination that caters for all outdoor enthusiasts. He praised the foresight Mayo county council had in promoting and developing resources for visitors to the area and spoke of the need for everyone to place a greater value on our natural resources, work together and raise the profile of our tourism

Mayo’s leadership in innovation and entrepreneurship in the spotlight Patsy O’Brien

full house was on hand at a major national conference this week to hear Mayo-based EY entrepreneur of the Year, Harry Hughes tell other west of Ireland businesses: “Focus on your strengths, be positive and get beyond adversity.” The west of Ireland will next year be the EU’s European Entrepreneurial Region for 2018 and this and other topics were discussed at the ONE REGION ONE VISION conference in Salthill, Galway, attended by over 150 people. Now in its second year, the conference aims to challenge consensus views on the west and explore mechanisms to create a vibrant and thriving west of Ireland. Cllr Patsy O’Brien, Chairperson of the Northern and Western Regional

Assembly and member of Mayo County Council, as keynote speaker, joined Hughes, whose company employs 100 people in Westport, with technology journalist Adrian Weckler and companies from across the region in celebrating entrepreneurship. Addressing the large attendance Cllr O’Brien spoke about the successes created by entrepreneurs such as Hughes whose product catalogue is now translated into 26 languages worldwide and he acknowledged the impact of increased infrastructure such as new motorways and connectivity being put in place. “This will be the catalyst for the West to be a viable counter-weight to the economic might of Ireland’s Dublin and Eastern region,” said Cllr O’Brien. But he also warned against repeating

mistakes of the past and highlighted the need for continued investment in our people and infrastructure. He said: “Of importance is our investment in rail infrastructure, national and regional connectivity. I encourage the Government to maintain existing train lines and continue to explore the economic and regional impact of re-opening old lines along the west of Ireland”. The conference organised by the Northern & Western Regional Assembly, and by the Western Development Commission (WDC), heard that Dublin’s economic success has had an entirely unexpected impact on the West. It is potentially quickening the speed of economic development in rural Ireland as people seek an improved quality of life including cheaper housing and reasonable commuting times. NWRA Director David Minton speaking after the event said that: “To be a great entrepreneur, you have to be a bit of a fortune teller, to read the proverbial tea leaves and predict what your customers will want before they know they want it. “We heard from Harry Hughes how he grew Portwest, how the company forecasts growth and how they are so committed to their community.” A key topic for discussion at the One Region: One Vision conference was also the European Entrepreneurial Region 2018 designation. Announced in Brussels by the EU’s Committee of the Regions, the award was given to the region because it has collectively developed policies that are transforming the area ‘from adversity to advantage’, in the process making it one of the most resilient and ambitious places in Europe.

International acclaim for Leitrim novelist IT is celebration time for Leitrim novelist Kevin McManus. Under the Red Winter Sky, his latest novel, has won an award for Best Crime Novel 2017, beating off stiff competition from other authors from the UK and the USA. It came first from a list of 2000 nominated books. It also came 5th in

best novel of the year overall, receiving 10,000 votes. And that not all . . . Kevin’s first book: The Whole of the Moon, has hit the top of the Amazon charts in three categories, British and Irish literature, Contemporary Literature and British and Irish Crime Fiction. The novel

is set at Christmas in 1988 in Western Ireland in the fictional Sligo village of Ballinastrad. The central character is Conor Doyle who has recently emigrated to London but has returned home for the Christmas holidays. On his return he is reunited with his life-long friend, Darragh Lonigan. The two men become caught up in the fall out from a terrible crime which tests the strength of their friendship. Kevin explains that one of the principal ideas in the book is how a rural community can be destroyed by lack of investment and emigration and how people are affected by emigration on a deeply personal level. The author believes that the novel appeals to people who grew up through the economic hard times of the late 1980s and also young adults today that have just endured the recent years of austerity. He also went on to explain that he tried to write a book that was not over long and not overly demanding for the

reader. He said: “Sometimes I think potential readers are put of by protracted and very arduous books. There are some people that only read a few novels in a year. The Whole of the Moon is not a lengthy novel so a reader could pick it up and get through it over a night or two or on a wet Saturday afternoon. The story is delivered largely through local dialect that I hope it reads quite naturally. It deals with a very serious subject matter but there is a good deal of humour and there are lighter episodes in it, too, particularly in the conversations between the central characters at the start of the novel.” The story is set against the popular culture of the time with many references to music of the decade, including the book title itself of course which was inspired by the classic Waterboy’s song. A total of 49 groups in Mayo are celebrating the awarding of grants to fund physical activity for older people. The Go for Life Grant Scheme from Age & Opportunity and Sport Ireland is awarding over €13,230 to groups around Mayo, and nationwide grants totalling almost €300,000.

The aim of the grants is to improve the health and wellbeing of older people across the country by providing them with opportunities to engage in physical activity and sport. Groups benefitting this year include Men’s Sheds, ICA guilds, Active Retirement Groups, Local Sports Partnerships, Sports Clubs, Family Resources Centres and many others who provide older people with opportunities to get active. Announcing the successful grantees at the Ballybough Community Centre, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin TD, said: ‘Over the last seventeen years the National Grant Scheme funding has supported and empowered thousands of groups of older people to get more active more often and the record number of applications this year shows the continued importance of the scheme for groups throughout the country. Programmes like Go for Life, funded by Sport Ireland, will help us reach the targets set out in the National Physical Activity Plan and approximately 30,000 people nationwide will take part in the activities funded by the grants. The

success of this scheme shows what can be achieved with a small investment and the importance of funding sport and physical activity, at any age.’

Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer vigorously for 5 minutes or until the mixture has thickened to a sauce consistency which will coat the back of the wooden spoon. Season with salt and pepper to taste then pass the sauce through a sieve into a clean saucepan. Reheat gently and use immediately or cool and store in the fridge in a plastic container.

Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Prick the potatoes all over with a fork, then bake whole for 1 hr 20 mins or until crisp on the outside and fluffy inside. Set aside on a wire rack to cool. Reduce oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. 2. Once the potatoes are cool enough to handle, cut in half and scoop out the flesh into a large bowl, discarding the skins. Brush the dough with the remaining melted butter and bake for 45 mins or until golden brown on the outside. 4. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on the tray. Meanwhile, put the cream cheese in a large bowl and whisk until smooth and light. Stir in the double cream and lemon juice, and season well with black pepper. Spread the cream cheese mixture all over the surface of the cooled potato cake. Use a large, sharp knife to cut the potato cake into 30 squares, then top with the strips of salmon, the dill fronds, caperberries and lemon zest. Transfer to a serving platter and serve.

Meanwhile, soak small wooden skewers in water for 10 mins. When ready to serve, thread a piece of meat onto each skewer. Heat a griddle pan, or frying pan, and brown skewers for 1-2 mins each side or until grill marks appear. Add a little more oil to the pan if needed. 4. Mix together the dipping sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Serve the skewers with lettuce, sesame seeds, spring onions and dipping sauce.

Gargle with unpasteurized honey: Any non-pasteurized wildflower honey will do, but if you want one with a super powerful punch, Julie recommends Manuca honey from New Zealand, which is known for its high concentration of anti-bacterial elements. But all unpasteurized honeys, she says, contain hydrogen peroxide which helps to kill off microbes in your throat. “There’s real science behind that,” she says. Julie recommends making a gargle solution out of warm water, not boiling, and dissolving a teaspoon of honey in it. Alternatively, you can drink ginger tea with lemon and honey, but let it cool down a bit before you add the honey so you

Dig into that “ever-loving garlic”: “Raw garlic is so, so strong,” says Julie. The active ingredient in raw garlic is allicin and it’s known to have antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, which she says “are especially great for lung infections.” But make sure you eat it raw since its power is diminished in the cooking process. You can use this powerful nutraceutical in pesto, salad dressings and salsa. Eat mushrooms: Certain mushrooms, like Shiitake, are very good for preventing colds and flu, Julie says, and are especially easy to add to soups. (Her recipe for Shiitake soup is at the end of this article.) Stay super hydrated: “Viruses love dry sinuses, plus our whole immune system runs on fluid,” says Julie. “So if you suspect you’re getting a cold, make some tea right away and drink at least 10 cups throughout the day.” And avoid alcohol, which has high sugar content and is dehydrating. “White sugars have

been shown to slow the white blood cells response to infection,” Julie says. (Sorry, but those Hot Rum Toddies you always thought were good for a cold are not on her list.) So does Julie ever get sick herself? Not much, she says. “The only thing that takes me down is missing sleep, then getting on a plane. Planes are so dry and crowded. You’ve got all those people coughing in a tiny little cabin. I always advise people to power hydrate during thier entire flight. After clearing security, buy one of those huge water bottles and make sure you drink the whole thing. That little half a cup of fluid they give you on board just doesn’t cut it.” Shiitake Mushroom Soup Ingredients: 8 cups (2 L) vegetable broth 6 cups (1.5 L) cauliflower, chopped 6 cups (1.5 L) shiitake mushrooms, chopped 1/2 tsp (2.5 mL) pink rock or grey sea salt 1 tbsp (15 mL) apple cider vinegar 2 cups (500 mL) onions, chopped Directions: 1. Place all ingredients into a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce and cook for 20 minutes. 2. When finished, puree with immersion blender until smooth. 3. Serve warm, with a drizzle of pesto. Makes 12 servings.
