HILE the country seems to be edging towards another period of political uncertainty the economic outlook is not much better if the current vacancy rate for commercial units, particularly in the north-west, can be accepted as a barometer. Geo-Directory – a database of Ireland’s commercial and residential addresses – has revealed that Sligo (18pc), Leitrim (16.4pc), Donegal, Mayo (15.6pc each), Galway (15.4pc) and Limerick (15.3pc) are the six counties with the highest-recorded vacancy rates in the country. A key finding from their recent survey is that counties on the west coast continue to lag behind their eastern counterparts in securing occupiers for their commercial property stock. For Mayo the research makes for grim reading as it puts the commercial vacancy rate at the end of the fourth quarter of 2016 at 15.6 %, an increase of 2.1% on the same period last year, the third highest increase in the country. The news is even worse for the town of Ballina, with the unenviable statistic of having the highest vacancy rate in Connacht at 24.7%, up from 21.4% at the same time last year. Increases were also recorded in Castlebar and Westport. Sligo has the highest commercial vacancy rate of any county at 18% and Leitrim is not far behind. Geo Directory CEO Dara Keogh, noting the east-west divide, said the findings reinforce the theory the recovery is somewhat skewed, with the west falling behind the rest. Connacht’s vacancy rate, the highest of all the provinces, stands at 15.7% compared with Leinster (outside of Dublin), at 12.5%. However, other commentators have noted that this report could be timely. Following the recent launches of the public consultation on the National Planning Framework for Ireland and the Plan for Rural Development, it reveals the areas in greatest need of support, given the high vacancy rates recorded. Let’s see what transpires.

AS if he didn’t have enough issues on his plate this week Valentine Cards “with a difference” were the order of the day for An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, at his Castlebar Constituency Office on Tuesday from Early Years professionals in County Mayo who are involved in the ‘Big Start’ campaign which is calling for major reform in the struggling sector. According to SIPTU organiser and Mayo ‘Big Start’ campaign co-ordinator, Clement Shevlin (pictured here): “The SIPTU ‘Big Start’ campaign is calling for major reform in childcare to address the chaos that has left the sector totally demoralised. “In the sector, workers with third level qualifications are just receiving the minimum wage, providers are struggling to maintain a sustainable business and parents are struggling to afford the costs of childcare. “This situation is forcing some mothers to have to choose between their job or childcare costs.” “Every one of the over 130 childcare providers in Mayo received a Valentine’s Card in which they can write a personal message to Enda on how this dysfunctional childcare system is letting everyone down, especially our children. “Then on Valentine’s Day the cards will be hand delivered to Enda Kenny’s constituency office in Castlebar. “We will be asking that Enda would kindly reply by letter to all his constituents and thank them for their lovely card and promise them that he will raise the issue with the appropriate government department. “It’s time for Enda and the government to show some love to the childcare sector and those who work in it.”You can fine Big Start campaign updates on www.bigstart.ie or follow ‘BigStartIreland’ on Facebook

Ballaghaderreen town to build a wall... of welcome...for Syrian regugees. Photo: Anna Leask

Taoiseach received over 100 Valentine cards

WHEN the news broke first about at least 80 Syrian refugees being houses in a former hotel in Ballaghaderreen there were fears it would divide the community. Most locals were shocked by the news, but all this was due to the lack of communication on the issue; they had been told at the last minute. Roll on February 2017 and the people of the town have begun to prepare for the arrival of Syrian refugees to their local town – by building a ‘wall of welcome’. On the announcement an anti-Islamic flyer was distributed through letterboxes, but a group of locals wishing to welcome the refugees, called the ‘Welcome to Roscommon’ movement say that the announcement has actually brought the people of the town together. They asked a couple of artists to create a ‘welcome wall’ for the hotel the refugees will be staying in as a symbol of hope and goodwill. One of the artists involved, Maria, said that they were delighted to help, saying that it was “almost impossible to imagine what these families and individuals have been through, having had to leave their homes,

communities, friends and many loved ones behind”. She says that the idea behind the tree was based on the town’s name: “Ballaghaderreen translates in Irish to Bealach an Doirín, meaning ‘the way of the little oak grove’. The oak is also the symbol for the Celtic Tree of Life. “We found it appropriate to use the Tree of Life symbol on this welcome wall as it is a universal symbol, for example in Norse mythology it is Yggdrasil, the mighty ash and in Persian culture it is often pictured as a closely related beautiful flowering World tree.” Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, has a population of just shy of 2,000, and although 80 refugees are being introduced at the start, this could rise to 240. The hotel where the refugees will be homed is just temporary: the plan is to house the refugees around the country after the families become accustomed to life in Ireland. “We believe it is our duty to reach out and support the less fortunate.” Locals have also constructed a playroom, and made book donations ahead of the refugees arrival in early March.

Céide Fields Prehistoric Status defended

T

HE promoters of the Céide Fields, considered to be one of Ireland’s most important archaeological sites, has challenged findings from recent research which claims the site is 2,500 years younger than previously thought. Professor Seamus Caulfield, has challenged the conclusions of new research claiming the north Mayo field system is 2,500 years younger than previously thought. He has also criticised the fact that monies promised by the Government two years ago for the upgrade of its visitor centre have not come on stream. Deemed the ‘oldest enclosed fieldsystem in Europe’, the Neolithic site (hitherto dated to almost 6,000 years ago), was the subject of recent Phd research by Dr Andrew Whitefield. Challenging the Ceide Fields’ Stone Age status, the NUI

Galway archaeologist claims the system may, in fact, date from the Bronze or Iron Age. Dr Whitefield gave a public lecture in Galway’s Town Hall Theatre on the subject on Friday last, while his findings have also been published in the European Journal of Archaeology. Back in the 1930s, Seamus Caulfield’s schoolteacher father, Patrick Caulfield, discovered patterns of stones below the bog which he unearthed when cutting turf. Scientific probing through radiocarbon dating and mapping subsequently uncovered a fascinating way of life from over 200 generations ago. Prof Seamus Caulfield has long been associated with and credited for a significant body of archaeological work around the Céide Fields, which many consider to be an archaeological treasure

Abbey Street, Ballina. Co. Mayo Tel: 096-70630 / Fax: 096-72222

of Ireland. Reporting over the weekend on Caulfield’s reaction to the recent research, The Irish Times wrote that Dr Caulfield said he had been subjected to ‘a silent ambush’ over his life’s work. Dr. Caulfield, a retired Professor of Archaeology at UCD, explained: “The sole evidence for Dr Whitefield’s dating is based on a cutting through one wall under which the pollen is compared with the pollen from beside the wall. This method of ‘supposed precise dating’ has been discredited for 50 years.” Caulfield confirmed that he plans ‘to publish a full response to Whitefield’s claims’. “In the meantime, I will be welcoming archaeology staff and their masters’ students from NUIG on Friday, February 17 and 18, to visit the Stone Age walls in Belderrig and the Céide Fields,” he said. He added any issues he had with the NUIG Archaeology Department in the aftermath of last Friday’s public lecture had now been resolved. Dr Whitefield’s research argues that: “The problem with dating ancient structures such as these is that the age of the construction materials – rocks and stones – gives no indication of when the structures were built. The dated organic materials recovered from the slopes of Céide hill have an uncertain relationship with the stone boundaries.” Whitefield’s conclusions have also been questioned by Associate Professor Graeme Warren, Head of UCD’s School of Archaeology, who has collaborated with Prof Caulfield in the past. Professor Warren has argued that Dr Whitefield has failed to contextualise the Céide Fields with the other Neolithic sites in the area and, moreover, that his evidence for Bronze Age dating was insufficient.

Petition to save Sligo’s Veterinary Lab underway

A

petition to save the Department of Agriculture’s regional veterinary laboratory has been set up by a farmer from Co. Sligo. Trevor Boland, a part-time suckler farmer from Dromard in Co Sligo, has set up the petition after the Irish Farmers Journal revealed last

month that the regional veterinary laboratories (RVLs) are subject to a major internal review headed by Professor Alan Reilly, the former chief executive of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland. Irish Farmers Journal summarised the report into three main recommendations: The first was to keep all six RVLs in Cork, Limerick, Kilkenny, Backweston, Sligo and Athlone open. The second was to, in time, close Limerick, Sligo and Kilkenny, with an upgrading of the facilities at the other three labs. The third was to close all bar Backweston and put out a

fleet of vans on the road to carry out the roles of vets in the various RVLs. Farmers’ request Boland, alongside local vet Annette Siggins and Sligo IFA, has worded the petition to the effect that the “farmers of the North West of Ireland request that the RVL in Sligo remains open to serve the farmers of the West and North West region”. Post-mortems are often carried out within 24 hours of the animals death, therefore improving the chances of diagnostic results and fast treatment response The petition says that

laboratory provides “a vital service to the farming community in Counties Sligo, Leitrim, Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Mayo, Roscommon, Galway and further afield”. It goes on to say that post mortems are often carried out within 24 hours of the animals death, therefore improving the chances of diagnostic results and fast treatment response. “Also emergencies like downer cows benefit immensely from same day results (blood taken to getting the result) to assist for the correct treatment. Fast acting and fast results play an important part of animal health and welfare.”

How to keep your February fitness on track

in motivation. “You’re trying to actually create a healthy lifestyle. Just because you do something good for yourself, doesn’t mean you have to do something bad. You’re coming out of the gym or finishing your exercise feeling great so treat yourself by getting some healthy food.” Dr Anderson adds, “In saying that, you can’t deprive yourself of everything across the week. One cupcake is fine, just don’t do it every day”.

A

re you finding it difficult to keep to your New Year’s fitness resolution? Are you tempted to slip back onto your couch and order a pizza? Every year, New Year resolutions are abandoned by mid-February as people revert to their old ways. Lecturers from the department of Physical Education and Sport Science at University of Limerick (UL), Dr Ross Anderson and Dr Mark Campbell, share their top tips on how to keep your motivation for fitness going year round. Don’t Give up If you started your training with too much intensity, your motivation is likely to wane. Going from no exercise to running 5k or 10k within the first few weeks of training is unrealistic and aiming for too much too fast is not only unsustainable but can also lead to serious injuries. According to Dr Campbell, “Everyone who starts in January wants to do 10 things at once. They want to run 10k, train for the marathon, lift loads of weights and have a six pack and they want it all now. One of the important things is to start slow and to have one or two small, reachable targets”. If you have been doing intensive gym sessions for the last month and now feel the urge to give up, it might be best to start from scratch. Dr Anderson says a brisk walk, cycle or light jog is a good starting point and more encouraging in terms of long-term fitness and health benefits. Think of your goal Whether your overall goal is to eventually climb Mount Everest or simply

to have a slightly slimmer summer body, try to visualise this aim whenever you feel like giving up. If you don’t have a target, sit down and think of one that you can focus on as motivation. Dr Anderson says, “I think it’s about trying to find the reason why you’re going to the gym. To go to the gym for the sake of going to the gym is probably why, five weeks later, people stop going”. Track your improvements If you’re not already doing it, start recording your training. In a notebook, write down everything that you do every day in relation to exercise. If you start to lose motivation, look through this notebook and consider how much you’ve already achieved. Dr Anderson says, “If you train every day or a couple of days a week for a month or six weeks, you actually achieve a lot in that time. If you’re in the middle of February and look back at your record and see, for example, you’ve run 100k which was something you never thought possible. This logging of training or time spent in the gym is really important motivationally, so you can see where you were. Looking at this log will make you think, ‘I’ve invested six weeks in this, why am I thinking of quitting now?’” Don’t let a little slip become a big slip Everyone has an off-day with a new fitness regime. However, you can limit the amount of damage this ‘off-day’ does to your new lifestyle. Do not let one cupcake become the whole cake. Dr Campbell advises keeping in mind your aims on a day when you’re lacking

Get Help If you’ve been training for the last six weeks and feel, either unsure of what to do or excessively sore, ask for help. This uncertainty and pain will have a negative impact on your motivation. Getting professional advice will change the way you train and is a great way to ensure you maintain your fitness and exercise program. Whether you decide to go to the gym or exercise outdoors, make sure you get advice from someone who knows what they’re doing, for example a sports an exercise scientist. “Small technical help can be really useful, particularly for running so you don’t feel as sore afterwards and you don’t find it as torturous and you actually go ‘that was enjoyable!’” Dr Campbell says. Realise the positivity fitness can bring to your life. Exercise and fitness contribute to a healthier lifestyle which, in turn, contributes to a happier person. Whatever your goal is when you begin your fitness journey, keep in mind the improvement you’re making to yourself overall, both physically and mentally. Dr Campbell says “There are great mental health benefits with exercise. For people who have stressful jobs it’s a lovely escape and a way to switch off. It’s a way to mind your mental health. If you can get competent at exercise, you can be competent at looking after yourself in ways you didn’t know you possibly could”. *It is advisable to get a health scan before you begin a fitness regime or at any stage of training to ensure your ability to train Dr Mark Campbell is a lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Performance Psychology and Dr Ross Anderson is a lecturer in Biomechanics and the Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs for Education and Sport Sciences at the department of Physical Education and Sport Science at University of Limerick (UL).

IT Sligo Success At IrelandSkills Finals 2017

...Situated in the picturesque village of Dromahair, Co. Leitrim

news

IT Sligo joinery apprentice James McSwiney receives his IrelandSkills2017 award at the national finals in Cork. L-R: Deputy Lord Mayor (Cork) Cllr P.J. Hourican; Dr Barry O’Connor, Registrar & Vice President for Academic Affairs Cork IT; James McSwiney, IrelandSkills 2017 Joinery Winner; Mr David Tracey Training manager, John Sisk & Sons Ltd; Deputy Cork County Mayor Cllr Derry Canty; John Joe O'Reilly IrelandSkills Joinery Chief Expert.

A

n IT Sligo apprentice has scooped one of the top awards at the Ireland Skills finals for 2017 in Cork. James McSwiney from Ardee in County Louth is a joinery apprentice at the Institute, and is currently employed by the international Construction Company John Sisk & Sons, headquartered in Dublin. His craft skills were rewarded when he claimed first place and the prestigious Silver Medal for joinery at the national finals which were held at Cork Institute of Technology. The IrelandSkills National Compeititon, which has been running since 1957, promotes the pursuit of excellence and high level skills that are central to Ireland’s economic success and development. The competition disciplines range from aircraft maintenance to welding. In each of the categories, competitors had to come through exhaustive preliminary qualifying phases at regional events across

Ireland. In the joinery final, James and his fellow apprentices worked from a detailed set of drawings to set out and make an intricate arched door from scratch within a maximum time limit of 19 hours. “It was challenging but exhilarating,” said a delighted James. “The win came as a shock. But we put a lot of time into it spending most weekends training with John Joe (his mentor) and my work were good too in that they gave me time to prepare as the event got closer.” James’s success continues a proud tradition IT Sligo success at the IrelandSkills final. It is the institute’s 16th national winner in carpentry and joinery since 2000. He was trained at IT Sligo for the IrelandSkills final by Institute lecturer John Joe O’Reilly, who is himself a former Ireland Skills joinery winner and has been the Ireland Skills Joinery Chief Examiner since

2009. “We are delighted that so many of our students are helping to set the standard for excellence in workmanship,” said John Joe. “This competition attracts the best young trainee crafts persons from around the country and provides a showcase for the training and development of highly skilled crafts persons within the Irish education system.” James’s success now provides him with a platform to compete on the international stage as he will now have the opportunity to gain selection for the Ireland team which competes at the WorldSkills Finals in Abu Dhabi next October. James’s success continues a strong IT Sligo tradition in recent years. In 2015, another IT Sligo apprentice Daniel Murphy finished sixth overall at the WorldSkills finals held in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Other notable performances by IT Sligo students at the IrelandSkills 2017 finals included Baileborough’s Liam Meehan who collected second place in the carpentry final. Liam is a second-year Advanced Wood & Sustainable Building degree student. Another student from the same course, Shane Kennedy from Chaffpool, Tubbercurry, and apprentice Paul Kearney from Bracknagh, Co Offaly were also finalists in the joinery competition. “The Institute was extremely proud to have two national finalists from the Advanced Wood & Sustainable Building programme,” says John Joe. “Liam and Shane’s success reflects the quality of the course they are studying. Liam is now in contention to represent Ireland in Abu Dhabi later this year, while Shane is young enough to compete again next year and has gained excellent experience from his participation.” “Great credit must go to IT Sligo’s carpentry and joinery technicians Peter Gillespie, Colin Harte and support staff member Liam McCaffrey,” adds John Joe. “Their help and preparation behind the scenes made it so much easier for me to train the apprentices and for James and his colleagues to realise their potential.”

Your vision is important - Rachel Murray Eyecare

Y

our vision is important. Most of us take it for granted. Yet 224,000 Irish people are starting 2017 blind. Imagine what that would be like. The impact it would have on your life. It’s a scary thought to think about what you would lose. Over the Christmas one of my friends Granny, Cathy, passed away. I rang my friend to pass on my condolences and we got chatting about Cathy’s age related macular degeneration (AMD) and how many things must have changed for her when her vision deteriorated. Cathy lived a great life; she was a nurse, mother to 9 children and had 42 grandchildren. When she was 64 she had to give up her license and stop driving. But she seemed happy to be driven around by one of her children surrounding by a few of her grandchildren. Other things changed as well. She was an avid reader but that stopped too. Cathy used to ask my friend to read her the headlines from the Irish Times every day after school.

And if she liked the sound of a particular story she would read it to her. Her grandchildren became her eyes in many little ways. If she was buying them sweets or comics in a shop she’d have a bunch of money in her hand at the till and call one of them over to count it out for her. Cathy seemed to enjoy involving her grandchildren in all these things and to strangers they probably thought he was doing it to make her grandchildren feel like a grown up. Rather than Cathy needing their help to see. So my message about your vision is this: I don’t believe in worrying yourself about what might or might not happen in the future. But I do believe in looking after what you have. And something as simple as having an eye exam every 12 to 24 months is the best way to look after the health of your eyes and your vision. Many people who lose their vision could have prevented it by having an eye exam.

So with it being a new year I want to help you start the year right by looking after your vision. We are doing two good things this month – which is good for you, and also for a very good cause. GET YOUR EYES TESTED AND HELP SPONSOR THE TRAINING OF A GUIDE DOG PUPPY. Get your eyes tested in January and we’ll donate €50 to Guide Dogs for the Blind. Guide Dogs provides help to thousands of blind and partially sighted people across Ireland through the provision of guide dogs, mobility and other rehabilitation services. They also campaign for the rights if those with visual impairments and invest in eye disease research. Our goal is to raise €1000 in January to sponsor the training of a Guide Dog puppy. A guide dog puppy means someone will get their independence back when they get a Guide Dog who will become their eyes and allow them to get out and about.

LOOK AFTER YOUR VISION AND GET A €50 GIFT CERTIFICATE AS A THANK YOU FROM US When you get your eyes examined in January, not only will you be looking after your own vision and helping raise money for Guide Dogs For The Blind, we’ll also give you a €50 gift certificate that you can use towards new eyewear (you can also give this certificate to a friend if you don’t need new glasses). So you will get a little extra as a thank you for looking after the health of your eyes and helping someone else who will get a Guide Dog because of the funds we raise. WHY WE’RE SUPPORTING GUIDE DOGS FOR THE BLIND Five people will go blind in Ireland this week. There are currently 224,000 blind or partially sighted people in Ireland who rarely leave home alone. There is expected to be 270,000 blind or partially sighted people in Ireland by 2020.

Half of the dogs they train are needed to replace dogs that have retired. Training a guide dog costs €38,000 and takes 24 months. Guide Dogs for the Blind commit to providing a guide dog for life and a guide dog owner may have up to eight dogs in their lifetime. The average working life of a guide dog is five to six years. Top performer Eleanor Shanley for Coleman Centre

North West Counselling Counselling for people with addictions eg. Drugs, Alcohol, Gambling • ALSO COVERS GENERAL COUNSELLING The Coleman Music Centre, Gurteen, Co. Sligo, will host Eleanor Shanley on Saturday, February 18th, at 8.30 p.m. Eleanor’s 2016 presented a busy year from the off, especially so on the back of her successful “Forever Young” album launch the previous autumn. Spring was spent touring Canada with De Danann, and some very special Irish live shows including RTE Radio 1’s open-air concert in O’Connell St. Dublin as part of the city’s 1916 Commemorations. Eleanor was joined by close friends Mike Hanrahan (guitar and vocals) and Paul Kelly (mandolin and fiddle). Eleanor comments “what a great honour, how could it be anything other than an honour to be involved in the 1916 Commemorations in Dublin. A very memorable performance for all the right reasons”. In addition a further personal highlight was performing at “Here’s To You, Ronnie Drew – A Celebration” in honour of her dear, dear friend held at Vicar Street in September. Spring 2017 commences with a tour of Denmark. Eleanor was awarded The Danish Folk Music Award in 2015, a testament were it needed to her popularity in this market. She is only

the second Irish artist to receive this honour since its inception 20 years ago. “2017 is already shaping up to be a busy one. “I am really looking forward to heading back to Denmark for live shows. I plan on some further Irish dates also, however, I will be heading back to studio to record my next album too. It’s been a busy couple of years; I would not have it any other way. I love performing, but time in studio can also be relaxing and feels rewarding too when complete! Indeed planning for this is very exciting too, especially when paralleled with a busy gigging schedule!”, she said. Eleanor’s new single to radio, double A side, “Smile” and “Dragonflies” signal the final singles to radio from Eleanor’s current album “Forever Young” ahead of the release of her new album this year. The album released in September 2015 continues to enjoy radio support across the country. The first single, the Thom Moore classic “Gorgeous And Bright” was the most played song on RTE Radio 1 last summer, it also enjoyed great levels of airplay at

Independent local radio nationally. “Sail Away To The Sea”, sees Eleanor’s beautiful vocal being backed by the a stunning cocktail of melody that includes guitar, fiddle, accordion, percussion, double bass, dobro and Eleanor Quaine on backing vocals. “Forever Young”, features twelve beautifully arranged and performed tracks in Eleanor’s inimitable style accompanied by some of her musician friends including Paul Kelly (mandolin, fiddle), Eamonn De Barra (keys, whistle), Martin Brunsden (double bass), Jim Higgins (drums), Frankie Lane (dobro & backing vocals), Damien Mullane (accordion) with string arrangements by Gavin Murphy. The album was recorded with the stunning Donogh Hennessy in Dingle late 2014. Eleanor has worked with many great musicians through the years and recorded with everyone from Ronnie Drew, De Danann, The Dubliners, Sharon Shannon, Donal Lunny, to U2 and too many more both at home & internationally to mention here. Eleanor was honoured as The Leitrim Person Of The Year Award, a title she is very proud. Adm €18. Bookings 071 9182599

Amanda McCloat, Head of Home Economics Department and Helen Maguire, Lecturer in Home Economics were invited by the Assistant Director-General for Education, UNESCO, Qian Tang to participate in the UNESCO Week for Peace and Sustainable Development and in particular, the Forum on Global Citizenship Education (GCED), which is jointly organized by UNESCO and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and is scheduled to take place at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa, Canada in March. The UNESCO Week will place an overall focus on teachers and teacher education, with sessions highlighting best practices in this area. The event will emphasise the practical aspects and implementation of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education – two key programmes in achieving Target 4.7 of Sustainable Development Goal 4 on Ed-

ucation. “We are delighted to be asked to participate in this invite only event” said Amanda McCloat. “It is very prestigious to have secured this invitation from UNESCO, based on our expertise in the field of Home Economics and Education for Sustainable Development. Helen added “while we already incorporate sustainable theories and practices in the Bachelor of Arts (Education, Home Economics and second subject) programmes and the Professional Masters in Education (with Home Economics) this experience will further enhance our awareness and potential in this regard”. Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship Education are two major programmes that contribute to education with today’s global challenges. They aim to ensure that learners of all ages acquire the knowledge, skills and values needed to

promote sustainable and peaceful societies. Since the launch of the United Nations Global Education First Initiative in 2012 and the declaration of the UN Decade on ESD for the years 20052014, ESD and GCED have continuously gained momentum; both are included under Sustainable Development Goal 4Target 4.7 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and are relevant for the achievement of all other Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. Both Amanda and Helen were two of the first Home Economists internationally to achieve certification as International Professional Home Economist (IPHE) in recognition of their contribution to the wider visibility of Home Economics on an international platform and their ongoing support to the work of the International Federation for Home Economics.

21

want but there are a few essentials that are important to know before you start looking or visiting venues. 1. Time of Year / Specific Date: Do you have a specific date in mind, if so you will need to check if they have it available in the first place. If not, if you want a certain time of year you will also need to check what’s available. Some venues can book as far as 2 years ahead for weekend dates. 2. Number of Guests: Will the venue have the capacity to take your numbers or do they have a minimum number of guests and your numbers are less? You will need to ask what this means for you. Knowing your numbers is also the basis of the quote process; the venue can’t let you know the full cost unless you can give them an indication of your numbers. 3. Budget: This is very important, there is no point in looking at 5 star venues if you have a 3-4 star budget, you are only teasing yourself and trust me, you will be heart broken. It’s like walking in to BT’s and seeing all of those fabulous Mulberry bags and having to walk away. Soul destroying! Once you have an idea of what you feel you are willing to spend per head on the meal, that would be a good starting point. 4. Type of Venue:

You may have a preference for a specific type of venue, this can also dictate price. Wedding Venue types include: Hotel, Private Estate, Castle, Farm Location, Marquee, Glamping, Restaurant and the list goes on. 5. Home or Abroad: Do you want to stay at home or do you want to go abroad? Searching at home for a wedding venue is obviously a great deal easier than going abroad. It also depends on your abroad location as there are some excellent destination planners in some countries and they can make the whole experience very easy. 6. Bar Closing Time / Bar Extension: Let’s face it, us Irish love a good ‘oul party and god forbid a bar closing when the craic is just getting started! One thing you should find out is what time the bar will close at and if it is standard times, can they provide a bar extension, if they can, how much will it be and if they can’t, is there another venue that you can carry on the party at. 7. Decor: Where i find most budgets clocking up all of the unforeseen costs is table and venue decor. You will need to see what comes with your package as if it is a blank canvas you will need to hire and furnish the venue or if they hotel offers a certain decor, you may want to see

if you can add your personal touch to it. 8. Reputation: Always check the forums to see if other brides have reviewed your chosen venue. If there have been issues, you will be aware so that you can ensure that it doesn't happen on your watch or if they have a glowing reputation this will give you reassurance. If it’s a hotel, also check TripAdvisor as may see reviews on the rooms and food. 9. One wedding per day: For some this can be an issue, just double check if they have a one wedding per day policy. There are some venues that are huge and they can do more than one wedding per day really well but others can be opportunistic and can take 2 a day and you could end up standing next to the other bride at the bar. 10. Civil Ceremony option: A very popular choice for today’s brides and grooms is the civil ceremony. Check and see if you can host your ceremony within the venue or its grounds, this would save your guests from travelling to multiple locations. It also gives you a nicer option than the registry office. A great venue and wedding coordinator will guide you through the process and help you along the way. Good luck choosing and congratulations on your day!

Home Energy Tips That Save You Money efficient and "G" being the worst guzzler for energy. Tumble Driers Tumble driers are energy guzzlers so try to use washing lines or airers. Don't put very wet clothing into the dryer, make sure you wring clothing out or spin dry again to help use less energy. Fridges/Freezers These are the most hardworking appliances in the home. Avoid putting Warm or Hot Foods in the fridge, let them cool down first. Don't leave the Fridge or Freezer door open, this means the fridge uses more energy to cool itself back down due to the cool air lost opening the door. Switching Energy Supplier In the current rising trend of energy prices it could well be worth shopping around to save money on your energy bills, further discounts are available if you switch both gas & electricity to the same supplier. It is a simple process and there is no disruption to your existing energy supply.

E

nergy is vital to nearly all aspects of our daily lives - but we rarely stop to think about how or why we use it. As the price of energy continues to rise, now is the ideal time to consider what you can do to be more energy efficient. The good news is that there are many simple ways to use energy more efficiently that will save money and benefit the environment. Hot Water Of course it should be hot, but it doesn't need to be scalding. For most people, setting the cylinder thermostat at 60°C/140°F is fine for bathing and washing. This can save up to €15 per year. Light bulbs If you use a particular light for an average of four hours or more a day, then replace it with an energy-saving equivalent - which will use around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer. Each energy efficient bulb fitted could give you an estimated saving of €10.50 off your energy bill per year. Kettles Heat the amount of water you really need and if you're using an electric kettle, make

sure you cover the elements. More modern kettles have no visible element so you use less water, you could also try to fill a cup and use it as a guide to fill the kettle, so that you boil the right amount of water. Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows. Take care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows. Heating Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off your heating bills. You can also save on running costs by heating your home for an hour less each day. Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set. Standby can use as much as 10%-60%of the electricity that would be used by the device if it was switched on. Also don't forget to turn your Computer monitor off, as it too wastes electricity if left on. Appliances When purchasing kitchen appliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing

heatgrass juice is perhaps the most health-generating food out there, with so many benefits in terms of energy levels, overall health, and head-totoe beauty quiet unlike any other food in the world. The word “super food” describes foods with high concentrations of nutrients such as amino acids, enzymes and other compounds to protect and repair damage to your cells.

This nutrient-dense food definitely fits the bill, Loaded with Enzymes; Wheatgrass can form a key part of most alternative medical treatment plans. More important: Even if you’re healthy today, taking enzymes is something you can and should do now to aid prevention of future illness. It can be consumed, or applied topically for both health & beauty benefits. In addition to being a nutrient-dense food—wheatgrass contains another ingredient with powerful medicinal properties... Get ready for a little “green magic” CHLOROPHYLL Wheatgrass is

an overflowing source of living chlorophyll. Some scientists think chlorophyll possesses a particular kind of magic when it comes to health benefits. Those say it’s so rich in oxygen it’s virtually like hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying component of red blood cells.) Chlorophyll is a green pigment found in a range of plants and algae. This detoxifier provides the perfect alkaline balance for many of the acidic foods common to our European diet. Research shows chlorophyll aids the following: It helps neutralize toxins and environmental pollutants in the body. Aid proper digestion & Bowel Movements Restores Alkalinity to the blood & is

“Chlorophyll, the healer, is powerful and bland— devastating to germs, yet gentle to wounded body tissues. Science has proven that chlorophyll arrests growth and development of unfriendly bacteria. Chlorophyll can be extracted from many plants, but wheatgrass is superior, given it has the largest range of elements needed by man. Wheatgrass is high in oxygen, which is beneficial to the brain, and necessary for all body tissues functions making it a great way to stimulate circulation. In addition to taking a wheatgrass supplement, you can also massage wheatgrass juice on your face and neck to dilate blood vessels and allow more circulation to the surface of the skin thus slowing down the aging process. The starch of the wheat berry is stored energy which when converted to simpler sugars is a quick energy source. It is especially beneficial for athletes because been a juice it is Absorbed & Digested in 20 minutes or less, using very little of the body’s energy to extract the nutrients… Wheatgrass can be an effective treatment for skin disorders when applied topically as well as been consumed orally. Improve Digestion: Instead of reaching for antacids to relieve heartburn or indigestion, introduce wheatgrass into your daily regimen and benefit from its vitamin B, amino acids, and enzyme content. From irritable bowel syndrome to ulcers, wheatgrass is a great tool to improving digestion. Wheatgrass assists cleansing your bowels of impacted matter and mucous. Cleanse the Liver: Wheatgrass is probably best known for its effects on the liver. The liver processes what the body ingests, and with its detoxifying properties, nutrients, and enzymes, wheatgrass is aids in the restoration and revitalisation of the liver. Prevent Disease: Due to its potent detoxifying properties, wheatgrass works to keep the blood clean and

oxygenated as well as the red blood cell count high. All Disease thrives in a low-oxygen environment, so keeping the body Oxidized and in an Alkaline state is of the upmost importance Wheat-grass the Health Wonder” is an All-natural health booster and a therapeutic aid to the human anatomy It’s not the food in your life; It’s the life in your food. When taking Fresh wheatgrass juice; people say “I can feel the life in that” they feel the near immediate high, we call it energy. When we are feeling ill or run down, our cells operate at low intensity, like a weak battery. Only other living cells can provide the electricity we need to recharge. Although there is some enzyme activity in powdered and frozen grass, it has not the same level of intensity as fresh grass, so when you need to jump start a tired or sick body there is no substitute for the fresh juice to heal & rejuvenate ones-self. Wheatgrass, a known blood purifier, cleanser, detoxifier, and has chlorophyll (the green stuff) which helps to carry oxygen to every cell in your body. Oxygen in your cells will help to fight off diseases, bad bacteria, and neutralize toxins. Wheatgrass must be “squeezed” or juiced in order for our body to assimilate the nutrients. (Consume Fresh were ever possible) (When you have tried our grass, you have had the best and will taste the difference) Fresh Wheatgrass Juice The following are some Bullet points Aids Stimulation of Circulation & Reduces Fatigue Aids in the Control of Blood Pressure & Cholesterol Cleanses the Immune system & Increases Alkalinity Aids Digestion & Metabolism Treat & Relives Skin Disorders Incl. eczema, psoriasis, and sunburn Fresh wheatgrass juice contains more vitamin C than oranges and twice the vitamin A of carrots Come and collect your fresh wheatgrass juice every week at the It Sligo Farmers Market every Saturday morning 9-1 Livestock Exhibition Centre Sligo Road Carrick-on-Shannon (Car boot Sale) 9-1 Market Square Castlebar every Friday 9-4 Fresh Wheatgrass Juice There is no Substitute for the Real Thing.

First off the boards was John B Keane’s masterpiece, The Field, performed this time by Dooega Drama Group on 10th February, 2017, 8pm, to be quickly followed by Ballina Riverside Theatre Group’s presentation of another John B Keane classic, Big Maggie, on Thursday 16th , Friday

17th and Saturday 18th February, at 8pm. Roll on to Friday, February 24th at 8 p.m. when Clann Machua Drama Group, Kiltimagh, will bring their production of Sean O’Casey’s Juno & The Paycock to the Arts Centre on Friday, 24th February at 8pm. Ballina’s Riverside Theatre group will also present a play, The Stolen Child, on 10th March. Further details next issue. Big Maggie Riverside Theatre Group returns to

Ballina Arts Centre with yet another wonderful production on Thursday 16th, Friday 17th and Saturday 18th February, 8pm. – John B. Keane’s Big Maggie! A riveting story of money, land and intrigue. On the day of her husband’s funeral, Maggie Polpin, widowed mother of four, is now ready to take power into her own hands… but at what cost? Set in 1960s rural Ireland and shocking for its time – the play premiered in 1969 – Big Maggie, is a com-

pelling portrait of a woman who is determined to take control of her life following the death of her husband. Big Maggie is also a prescribed single text on the English Leaving Certificate with many students around North Mayo studying the play for their 2017 exams! Tickets: €12 / €10. Early booking advised. Juno and the Paycock Friday 24th February 8pm Clann Machua Drama Group, Kiltimagh, is delighted to bring their production of Sean O’Casey’s Juno & The Paycock to Ballina on Friday, 24th February at 8 p.m. The play was first staged at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1924. It is set in the working class tenements of Dublin in the early 1920s, during the Irish Civil War period and revolves around the misfortunes of the dysfunctional Boyle family. Juno and the Paycock is the second of three O’Casey plays in what is known as the ‘Dublin Trilogy’ set in the tumultuous years of 1916-1923, with The Shadow of a Gunman and

The Plough and the Stars, Drawing upon his first hand knowledge of Dublin tenement life and workers’ suffering during the period, to depict the ensuing hardships of poverty, malnutrition, disease, and lack of privacy, the play has been praised for O’Casey’s realistic representation of idiomatic Dublin speech, rich literary allusions, characterization, social conscience, and blend of comedy and tragedy. “Th’ whole worl’s in a terrible state o’ chassis”. Tickets: €12 / €5. Early booking advised. You can now book tickets ONLINE for Ballina Arts Centre events. Just go to www.ballinaartscentre.com and click the “BOOK NOW” tab on top of the page!! Ballina Arts Centre is open from 10am – 6pm Monday to Saturday. For further information on all events, contact Ballina Arts Centre, Barrett St., Ballina, Co. Mayo. Sun 12 Feb 2017, 8pm €20/18conc./10 u18s Scottish songstress, Eddi Reader celebrates her thirtyyear career with the release of her first career spanning compilation Eddi Reader The Best Of. She will be joined by her regular band members, John Douglas (guitar & vocals), Boo Hewerdine (guitar & vocals), Alan Kelly (piano accordion) and Kevin McGuire (double bass & vocals). With her captivating and powerful performance, Eddi Reader has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers. What sets Eddi apart is the depth and

quality of the emotional performance and ability not only to move the listener, but also to connect her experience to that of her audience. Having first hit the limelight in the 1980’s with the group Fairground Attraction (who enjoyed huge chart success with their debut No.1 single Perfect and album First of a Million Kisses), Eddi went on to collaborate on many celebrated projects throughout the years, famously harmonizing with Annie Lennox while touring with the Eurythmics and paying her punk dues with a successful stint in the group Gang of Four. However it has been Eddi’s subsequent solo albums that have cemented her image as a powerful figure in British music.
