HILE Minister Varadkar might contend that the overcrowding situation in our public hospitals is improving his assessment was cold comfort last week for many in the north-west who required hospital care and may have had difficulty in accessing it. While these hospitals may not be directly affected by this week’s proposed work stoppage by INMO members the situation last week highlighted how volatile the service is. On Monday of last week, according to the INMO, 36 people were on trolleys at Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar, the third highest in the country. There were 20 in a similar position in UHG and 19 at Sligo Regional Hospital. In a statement on Monday week hospital management in Castlebar said the emergency department was extremely busy over the weekend and again on Monday, with a high number of patients requiring admission. All available beds were in use at the hospital and, due to the pressure on the ED, it had been necessary to accommodate patients in the Medical Assessment Unit, Day Surgery Unit and the Medical Day Unit. It is understood the situation improved later in the week and the numbers on trolleys dropped significantly, but the hospital was forced to defer all non-urgent surgery for the remainder of last week to accommodate additional medical patients. They were also making use of community services and nursing homes to release pressure. With the numbers of patients on trolleys nationwide still numbering close to 500 the Minister, assessing the situation last week, maintained the overcrowding situation is better than this time last year and it will take a number of years to fix the problem. Ballina Quay marina moves step closer P
lans for the development of a marina at Ballina Quay received a timely boost this week following a meeting between Mayo Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin and Simon Coveney, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Deputy Mulherin has received confirmation from Minister Coveney that Mayo County Council's shovel-ready proposal for the Ballina harbour marina at The Quay can be considered when 2016 funding streams are established early in the New Year. "Mayo County Council has now granted Part 8 planning for the development and Minister Coveney confirmed to me that the Council can make a formal application for the marina when 2016 funding streams are established early in the New Year and opened. "While I welcome very much the funding of €461,000 which I secured from Minister Simon Coveney over the past couple of years for aids to navigation, maintenance and storm damage repairs at Ballina Harbour at The Quay, I am now pressing for the area to be developed into a marina. I met with the Minister just before Christmas and asked him to consider funding the marina. "Mayo County Council has now granted Part 8 planning for the
TD Michelle Mulherin
development and the new Director of Services, Joe Loftus, confirms the project is now shovel- ready. "Last summer, The Quay Regatta festival was revived after many years with much aplomb. It was a great success and was a timely reminder of the massive potential this area has for marine leisure tourism as we look for new ways to entice tourists to the region. "The marina would complement the existing amenities and activities in the area including the long tradition of boating and fishing. The marina would be located along the Wild Atlantic Way beside the renowned Belleek Forest Park where the Monasteries of the Moy Greenway, Ballina to Killala, is under construction and near completion. Also Failte Ireland has designated Ballina Harbour as a Discovery Point. "The Minister confirmed that Mayo County Council's proposal can be considered when 2016 funding streams are established early in the New Year and opened and at that stage the Council can make a formal application. "I believe we need to press forward with a bold and great vision for the development of a marina at The Quay and I will continue to push for this funding and seek other avenues as appropriate."
Fears for Crossmolina Fire Station? SOME community members in Crossmolina have expressed concern to North-West Express over the future of the local fire station. Some years ago the town was at the top of the list in the country for a new station; however, at the start of 2016 Crossmolina finds itself with possibly the worst facility in Ireland. The question is posed: What has happened? Why has it been relegated to
this position after being a No. 1 priority a few short years ago? Those familiar with the station have described the condition of the building as deplorable and can’t understand why this has been allowed to happen. Undoubtedly, local people recognise the need for the retention of the local station and the value of the service was brought home to many during the recent flooding in the town.

Overcrowding crisis in north-west, too! Continued from front page Undoubtedly, while nurses and other frontline staff are doing their utmost to cope with the pressure, those who need medical assistance must still be concerned
about the possible consequence of this overcrowding, not to mention the discomfort of having to spend hours on trolleys. The ED overcrowding matter is a complex issue, but the ordinary citizen is entitled to
feel there are people charged with managing the situation and it is ironic it should take a threat of industrial action by the INMO to initiate what has been termed “escalation policies” to address this crisis in our health services.
Mayo flooding baffles council WHILE the rainfall in Mayo in late December has not been as severe as earlier in the month, and less than other parts of the country, the extent and nature of the flooding experienced has baffled officials and gives warning signals for the future. Council Senior Engineer Ann Sweeney told December’s meeting of Castlebar Municipal District that the council had raised the height of two sections of a local road at
Aghanish, south of Partry village in 2011 and flood levels still carried water six inches over the height of the raised road. Water levels at nearby Lough Carra rose higher than the road, making it difficult to pass. Ms Sweeney also said the flooding on the R312 Castlebar to Belmullet road at Lough Beltra between Glenisland and Glenhest ‘raised to a level I never saw before’. She added that flooding on both

sides of the Ballylahan Bridge in Straide were to levels council staff and locals had ‘never seen there before’. Ms Sweeney said the council would be listing bridges for assessment. It does not expect more ‘adverse events’ in the coming weeks. She said the Office of Public Works had provided funding for a family to cope with flooding at Facefield, Claremorris.

Father and Son collaboration on Leitrim Design House ART WALL
A
n exciting new project between father and son opens on the Leitrim Design House ART WALL on Thursday January 14th at 7.30pm with an exhibition of collaborative art and writing by French artist Jean-Louis Baudry and his son and writer, Tobias Baudry. The exhibition titled Autumn Leaves is a series of monoprints and oil paintings of Irish landscape scenes and wildlife with a particular focus on scenes from the countryside around Co. Sligo. Each image is accompanied by a flash fiction
story which observes the same scene and expands on it with a short narrative. These monoprints were created using an oil-based medium and inspired by the Sligo countryside. By layering different tones and textures in multiple transfers from plate to paper, Jean-Louis has attempted to capture something of the picturesque, yet uninhabited character of Irish landscapes. Both JeanLouis and Tobias harbour a deep fondness for the Irish countryside; the fields, mountains and rivers of
County Sligo, which formed the backdrop to their relationship as father and son and have always featured prominently in their work. The work began during the summer of 2014 with an art calendar which combined the monoprints of Jean-Louis with the flash fiction stories of Tobias into twelve, postersized pages. These calendars will also be on sale during the exhibition. This project progressed with a natural, monthly rhythm. Jean-Louis and Tobias produced monoprint-story pairings on a monthly basis, choosing each new scene in relation to the time of year, from the heart of winter to the budding of spring. These seasonal changes are keenly felt in thestudio where Jean-Louis works, - a dilapidated cottage he renovated 20 years ago and shares with his wife, the Dutch visual artist, Brigit Egging. His strong connection with his environment is evident in the monoprints. Jean-Louis is a self-taught painter who, over the last thirty years, has also worked in various fields of visual art. He became interested in oil painting while living in
Holland in the 1980's. He worked in theatres in Holland and Ireland as a stage technician and lighting designer. Tobias Baudry is a web designer and writer. From 2006 to 2010 he studied at Queen's University Belfast, graduating with an MA in Creative Writing. He writes mostly flash fiction (stories of no more than five hundred words, and often much less). This extremely short format allows the writer to zoom in on a moment and find a kernel of drama, something small but unique that could easily be missed from a wider perspective. Tobias is the author of one collection of flash fiction and short stories, Snake in the Grass and Other Stories. All are welcome to this reception launch on January 14th at 7.30pm, the exhibition continues until February 23rd 2016. Sligo Nursing Home defeats Storm Desmond
A perfect example of how preparedness and a combined strategy can prevent disaster was evidenced in Sligo in early December. As a result of local flooding, Sligo Nursing Home had a water ingress event on Sunday morning (6th December) at 3am when approximately two inches of water covered the ground floor. The team in Sligo Nursing Home had identified a problem outside the Nursing Home as early as Saturday morning. The emergency plan was put in place, informing Sligo Co. Co., the HSE and Fire Services. The Fire Brigade commenced pumping water from the nursing home grounds on Saturday afternoon. This was proving successful up to high tide at 2:30 am Sunday morning but the rising tide pushed the land water into the ground floor
of the nursing home. The management and staff had anticipated this and all residents were moved upstairs in the nursing home. 13 residents were relocated to a local HSE facility. All residents are safe and well and the movement of residents was handled professionally and faultlessly. Director of Nursing at Sligo Nursing home thanked the HSE, St John’s Hospital, Order of Malta, Sligo County Council, the Fire Service and Civil Defence for all their assistance and support. They also thanked the Staff at Sligo Nursing & their families for their help over the weekend to ensure the emergency plan worked smoothly. Sligo nursing home remains open. Natural gas flows (finally) from controversial Corrib field
M
any years later than expected natural gas is flowing into the national supply grid from the Corrib gas field off Co. Mayo for the first time since it was discovered in 1996. One of six wellheads, drilled in 350m of water 84km off the west coast, was opened on Wednesday of last week by the field developer, Shell E&P Ireland. This started gas flowing through a 20 inch diameter off-shore pipeline to an 8.3km-long onshore pipeline, which includes a 4.9km tunnel beneath Sruwaddacon Bay, the longest in Ireland. It continues from there into the company’s reception terminal at Ballanaboy, near Belmullet in Co Mayo, before entering the gas networks which delivers it to Irish consumers. Shell managing director Ronan Deasy, expressing his delight at the development, said he believed the company would always reach this point
once they had secured the permit. Permission to commence bringing the gas ashore was granted late on Tuesday by Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White. The project has been dogged by opposition, and has been subject of much media attention over the years, and the delay in its completion has been a major factor in the projected development cost overrun of €2.4 billion. However, this will be written off against profits, resulting in a projected loss to the taxpayer of some €600 million, based on the tax rate for the project profits of 25 per cent. Between August 2005 and June 2014, the policing of sometimes-violent protests and protection of workers at project sites cost the State €16.4 million, mainly due to the deployment of gardaí. While the protests may have run out of steam
opposition still remains, particularly from those who continue to point out that no benefit accrues to the Irish state from the project. The Shell to Sea group, who have opposed the project from the
outset, denounced Mr. White’s decision. Terence Conway, spokesman for the group said: “Over the years, campaigners have been constantly lectured by politicians about the need to respects the laws of the land and courts, but again with Corrib we see there is one law for them and another for us”. He also described Shell as one of the most destructive companies the planet has ever seen. At peak production, Corrib has the potential to meet up to 60 per cent of Ireland’s gas needs and is expected to supply gas for up to 20 years. More than 6,000 people worked on the development of the project, and more than €1.1 billion was spent in Ireland on contractors, subcontractors and supply companies, including many businesses in north Mayo. It will also secure our gas supply as any disruption of the current supply from Scotland (where 90% of our current supply comes from) could have a major impact on GDP. Mr. Deacy said Shell were committed to running the operation securely and safely and 175 jobs would be maintained over the period.

Sligo, Ballina and Castlebar selected as refugee housing spots
R0815
I
T has been confirmed that Sligo will become the home of some of the thousands of refugees fleeing their home countries and coming into Europe on a daily basis. The town/county will join 26 other selected locations across Ireland, including Castlebar, Ballina and Roscommon, the Minister for Justice has confirmed. However, there is no confirmation on which part of Sligo town or county has been chosen. Regionally, the new centres will also include Carrick on Shannon in Co Leitrim. Also, from an initial glance, it appears that Donegal will not be hosting
any of the refugees. According to the Minister (Frances Fitzgerald): ''We have got offers of help from all over the the country except one or two counties. We want to see everyone playing their part”. Ninety parcels of land were identified across Ireland as potential sites. However, only 26 of these have now been deemed suitable by the Department of Justice. Information reveals that refugees to Ireland in the past 12 months have come from Jordan, Lebanon and Syria and Ireland has committed itself to housing 4,000 refugees in the next two years. This was agreed at EU level in response
to the current crisis in Syria. In addition to the locations mentioned the refugees will also be accommodated in: Killarney, Kilkenny, Carlow, Cavan, Monaghan, Carrickmacross, Ennis, Limerick, Cork, Tralee, Thurles, Portlaoise, Tullamore, Waterford, Naas, Arklow and Mullingar – and in the four Dublin local authority areas. Minister Fitzgerald, while encouraging everyone to play a part, added: “There is a standard here. Some countries are building tented villages and using school gymnasiums but they are dealing with thousands.”
T
wo years have passed since the killing of Castlebar man Owen Maughan in broad daylight, in what the Gardai have described as an “executionstyle” shooting and now they have issued a renewed appeal for information. Mr Maughan (29) was killed
when he was shot whilst filling water cans at 3.30pm at Top Oil in Moneen, Castlebar on December 18th, 2013. Gardaí have canvassed over 1,500 people as part of the investigation but no arrests have yet been made. The victim was shot by an occupant of a dark grey
coloured BMW 3 Series Touring estate type car. The killer shot Mr Maughan from inside the car. The car was stolen from the car park of the Clarion Hotel at Dublin Airport on December 6th, 2013, and was fitted with false number plates, which were 09-D30024. That car was found burned out in a forest at Derryvohey, Balla two days after the killing. Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have known the whereabouts of the stolen car for the two weeks after it was stolen before the killing and anyone who may have seen it at Derryvohey or seen a different car leave that forest. Superintendent Joe McKenna of Castlebar Garda Station said the Gardai have pursued over 370 lines of enquiry, 22 of which are still ongoing. They have taken 150 statements and have canvassed 1,500 people for information. He described the event as an “execution”
and issued the renewed appeal in the hope that people who may not have been home in Mayo last Christmas may be able to help or people who were unwilling to come forward in the earlier stages of the investigation may have had a change of heart. Supt McKenna said all relevant national units of An Garda Síochána as well as Garda Headquarters were involved in the investigation, as well as officers at Castlebar Garda Station. He urged anyone with any information to contact Castlebar Garda Station on 094 9022222 or the Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111. The incident was believed to be connected to an ongoing feud between two Traveller families, though Owen himself was not directly involved in the feud. He was the third member of his immediate family to be shot in one year and the first to die from his injuries.

Fastcom to create 25 new jobs in Sligo
Ross Palmer, MD, Fastcom
F
astcom, the leading network performance and security management company, has today announced 25 new jobs on the back of €1.2 million investment. Over the next three years, the company will seek employees with expertise in network engineering and customer support to work at its new Sligo network operations and security centre. The growth is being financed through
private and director investment. Founded in Sligo in 2004, Fastcom provides a range of connectivity and network operations services for multisite retailers across Ireland and the UK. The company’s unique software allows businesses to view and manage their entire network and all connected devices from one location – ensuring unrivalled security, fast diagnosis and alignment of
resources with need. In total, Fastcom manages over 30,000 network connected devices. Retail security is a core driver for customers to implement Fastcom solutions. These include real-time automated threat response and alerts, as well as highspeed identification and resolution of unsecure devices in a customer’s infrastructure. The jobs and external investment reflect Fastcom’s
increasing presence in the Irish and UK market as it continues to expand its customer base. The company boosted its sales and revenue by 25% this year, with plans to double its turnover in the next three years. As well as expanding its operations in Ireland and the UK, Fastcom currently has business prospects in Singapore, Holland and Belgium. Ross Palmer, managing director, Fastcom, said: “Fastcom is a rapidly-growing business and we need additional staff to support our business activities. This investment will allow us to serve existing and prospective customers even better as we continue to develop our software and invest in our staff. “Fastcom is unique in Ireland; no one else is doing what we do. By pulling a company’s whole network together and looking at its IT holistically, we can diagnose problems quickly and reduce callouts from IT service people by 50%. We strive to make IT people more productive and actively help them identify areas for improvement to boost business performance. “As business owners become increasingly aware of the risk posed by data breaches and malware, that service is crucial. Companies simply cannot afford the downtime caused by technical glitches—or the bad press that follows. What we offer businesses is insurance and peace of mind.”

Aurivo strengthens customer relationships in Nigeria
Aurivo strengthens customer relationships in Nigeria: Dr. Harbhajan S. Batth; Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney; Eoghan Sweeney, general manager, Aurivo Dairy Ingredients and Consumer Foods and Aurivo technical manager, Robert Hosey at a dairy seminar in Africa recently.
A
trade mission to Nigeria and Ghana, led by Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Mr. Simon Coveney T.D. was hosted this month. Members of Aurivo’s senior dairy team accompanied the Minister, who took the opportunity to
meet a number of the Co-op’s major global customers. With more than 1,000 dairy farmers from 13 countries supplying milk to Aurivo, in excess of 75% of Aurivo’s current milk pool is exported, predominantly in the
form of enriched milk powder, to almost 50 countries globally. Aurivo supplies a number of key customers on the continent of Africa, with major partnerships in Nigeria and West Africa. The milk powder is produced by drying milk at Aurivo’s Dairy Ingredients site in Ballaghaderreen, which is then packed into 25kg bulk bags. The enriched milk powder is then sold in scoop format or small sachets in market. The powder can be consumed directly, reconstituted into milk by adding water; or stirred into hot beverage. Speaking in Nigeria, Aurivo Dairy Ingredients general manager, Eoghan Sweeney said: “The population of Africa is estimated at 1.2 billion and by midcentury is projected to double to 2.5 billion. This, coupled with several African markets recording the fastest growing GDP rates in the world, point to further business opportunities for Aurivo. Increasing urbanisation and the emerging solid middle-class will lead to a growing requirement for imported protein, such as dairy”. “Nigeria is the largest market for Irish food and drink exports, and accordingly is also Aurivo’s biggest export market” he added. Aurivo also produces milk powder for other diverse international markets, such as Afghanistan, Costa Rica, Iraq, Middle East and Mexico among others.
Good News came in threes for Mary Robinson Centre
Over 1,200 business leaders gathered in Dublin late in December as Mary Robinson was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Ireland Award. Pictured at the 2015 Business & Finance Awards are Mary Robinson (Outstanding Contribution to Ireland Recipient), Ian Hyland (President, Business & Finance), Kofi Annan (Former Secretary General, United Nations) and Shaun Murphy (Managing Partner, KPMG).
A
s the year ended, The Mary Robinson Centre was yet again celebrating good news and positive developments, in what has been a remarkable year of progress towards opening the doors of Ireland’s first Presidential Library in 2017. Following on from the resounding success of the Second Annual International Human Rights Lecture in November, Mary Robinson travelled directly to Paris to participate in COP 21 as United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Change. Last weekend, the world celebrated the successful outcome
of the Summit, with an unprecedented 195 countries worldwide coming together to say yes to Climate Justice for all, recognised as ’the start of a quiet, peaceful revolution, the triumph of humanity over self-interest’ by Mary Robinson. Adding to this achievement, Ireland’s business community on Thursday, 18th December, recognised Mary’s contribution to Ireland at the Business & Finance Irish Business Awards, attended by an invited audience of 1,300 at The Convention Centre Dublin. Introducing the award, Ian Hyland, President and
Editor of Business and Finance noted Mary Robinson is ‘an outstanding inspiration and somebody who makes us very proud to be Irish… a woman who has lit a torch of vision, equality and justice, which other generations will now carry forward.’ Mary’s former colleague at the United Nations and fellow Elder Kofi Annan presented Mary with the Outstanding Contribution to Ireland Award, recognising Mary’s outstanding contribution on the global stage. ‘Many might feel that her work as a social activist and a lawyer, and as elected senator and President of Ireland would be adequate for one person’s lifetime, yet the same passion for justice and the desire to protect the rights of the most vulnerable in society led Mary to a second, equally impressive career on the international stage. She was one of the most effective High Commissioners for Human Rights to ever hold the office, and I was ever grateful that she accepted my request to assume that role. She embodied the values at the heart of the United Nations… and as a fellow Elder, I know that her commitment to tackling critical issues has not wavered.‘ As ever, good things come in threes, and the final piece of good news for The Mary Robinson Centre this was the announcement by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, TD that Cabinet has approved a sum of €2 million for The Mary Robinson Centre, noting that the Centre will be ‘an important addition to Co. Mayo, and (part of a) necklace of museums and important sites that are relevant to both those at home and visitors from abroad.’ This important contribution to and support for The Mary Robinson Centre will leave the Centre poised for a year of significant advancement in 2016, with construction and archive digitisation to begin in the New Year and more exciting events planned for Ballina throughout the year.

Hillary Clinton: ‘I will reveal the truth about UFOs when I am President’
Sheila the sheep finally gets haircut after six years
I
t’s the moment conspiracy theorists have been waiting for – Hillary Clinton has vowed to reveal the truth about UFOs if she becomes President. The Democratic Presidential candidate vowed to ‘get to the bottom’ of UFO conspiracies – and reveal the truth behind Area 51 – if she is elected. Up to 77% of Americans believe that there is evidence aliens have visited Earth, according to a 2014 Harris poll. Conspiracy theorists believe that the American government has contacted aliens – but has concealed the fact for decades. Her campaign chairman, John Podesta, called for the release of UFO files, saying, ‘The American people can handle the truth.’ Clinton said, ‘He has made me personally pledge we are going to get the information out. One way or another. Maybe we could have a task force go to Area 51.’
Passenger watches pirated movie on plane – completely unaware he’s sitting next to the star of the movie
N
ext time you’re about to watch a pirated movie in public, look over your shoulder because you could be sat next to one of the stars of the movie. That’s what happened to this unfortunate plane passenger who settled down with a pirated film only to find the star of the movie was sitting next to him. Kriti Sanon is an award-winning actress who has just featured in the newly-released Bollywood movie Dilwale. The 25-year-old spotted the passenger using a projector to watch the movie, which is still in cinemas, and tweeted her anger to her 420,000 followers. Kriti, who stars alongside big Bollywood names Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Varun Dhawan, wrote: ‘Someone watchin pirated version of Dilwale in front of me on phone in the flight! Annoyed!! #SayNoToPiracy’ She then followed up the same picture with the caption: ‘Sad to c the hardwork of so many ppl bein watched in such pathetic quality!Pls enjoy films in cinemas #SayNoToPiracy’. Her tweets have since been liked more than 5,000 times with many commenters agreeing with her. Yet others were quick to point out though piracy is a crime, ticket sellers should consider lowering the price of a cinema ticket.
Ryanair’s new design is a whole lot classier – but will we get any more legroom?
R
ejoice! Passengers will no longer be blinded by Ryanair’s ugly interiors.
In photos released by the budget airline, their trademark garish yellow has been
scrapped in favour of a more muted white and blue. The windows will also be a bit bigger, and the seat backs a bit slimmer. But most importantly, the airline claims we
will finally – after so much waiting and hoping – get a bit of extra legroom. The design will be found on the carrier’s new Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which will be delivered this month. ‘Redesigned interiors are being introduced this year, where we’ll be toning down the yellow and installing new imagery,’ a spokesperson told Metro.co.uk. ‘The next deliveries of our Boeing 737-800 aircraft delivery from January will feature new slimline seats, which will create more leg room, and the new aircraft we take in will have also the new Boeing Sky Interiors, with new LED lighting, larger window reveals and new overhead lockers, with more headroom, plus our crew will be wearing new uniforms.’ The in-flight menu is also getting a much-needed update. This is all part of Ryanair’s efforts to rebrand and shake off its troubled image. Last year the Irish airline announced they would be using a new landing jingle, instead of the original, slightly over-the-top trumpet fanfare.
You can run, but you can’t hide. Even if you are a sheep. Sheila found this out the hard way when she got caught in Tasmania last week. Although given that temperatures can reach 42°C, it was probably worth it. She had somehow managed to avoid getting a haircut from her farmer owner Derek Turvey for more than six years. Sheila had apparently been roaming a Buckland forest after escaping. And she didn’t look that happy when she finally got the trim. After 15 minutes the shearer produced a pile of wool that weighed almost 22 kilograms. But it was much less than the record 41kg produced by Chris the sheep two years ago.
Revealed: The ‘shocking truth’ behind M&S choccie biscuits
A shocking claim has been made about the origins of ‘extra chocolatey’ Marks and Spencer biscuits. You might imagine that beneath its rectangular milk chocolate robe lies a piece of confectionery designed especially for the high-class selection box. It’s clearly not shortbread or gingerbread, but perhaps a cousin of the two – something refined. After all, it’s not just a biscuit – it’s an M&S biscuit. However, a whistleblower has taken to Instagram to claim that there is a more shocking truth. His allegation? They are Custard Creams ‘in disguise’. Now, we love a custard cream but is this a deception – or brilliant? Peter Marshall, aged 25, told Metro.co.uk: ‘I was dunking biscuits into hot milk and as the chocolate came away I noticed that the base of one of the biscuits was actually a Custard Cream. ‘I’ve always held M&S in quite high regard when it comes to food, and finding out that they were using a more common biscuit as a base was a bit of a shock.’ Peter, from the Isle of Man, snapped a picture and uploaded the proof to Facebook and Instagram but says he was surprised by the muted reaction. ‘I was on my own when it happened. I did tell people later but they didn’t really think it was that interesting – I was surprised at that to be honest. I guess Christmas is a busy time.’ He said he now can’t be sure of any of the biscuits in the box, and suspects the white chocolate biccie may have a custard cream secret as well.

Disability Studies online module at St Angela's begins in February
I
n February 2016, St Angela’s College, Sligo will introduce the first standalone Disability Studies Module, entitled ‘Concepts and Paradigms of Disability’, as part of the developed Disability Studies range of parttime, flexible learning options. The three programmes are open to people with disabilities, those who work for, or live with people with disabilities and who currently work or have a strong desire to work in the Disability sector. In partnership with The Disability Equality Specialist Support Agency (DESSA), the College developed a Standalone Module, as part of a Certificate in Disability Studies, and part-time Bachelor of Arts (BA) (Disability Equality Studies). “Students wishing to ‘test the waters’ in third level education can opt to take one key Stand-alone Module (part-time) without committing to a programme with an academic award”, explains Ms Susan Carton, Programme Director for this Disability Studies offering. In 2011, St Angela’s College launched a B.A. in Health & Disability Studies, the only level 8 undergraduate programme in Ireland with a disability focus. The programme, now in its fifth year, has seen a steady increase in student numbers. The course attracts a wide variety of applicants, particularly mature students with some experience of disability (personal, familial or professional). “The module enables participants the opportunity to form new perspectives
about disability,” Ms Carton contends, “The course will equip students with the knowledge to challenge existing concepts of what it means to be disabled and thereby contribute to the move towards a more equal society.” This module is delivered in a blended learning format. Students study independently at home, supported by online lectures and assignments and attend a small number of scheduled workshops. The programme includes extensive input from disabled academics and activists. Following successful completion of the online module, students may choose to continue on to the Certificate in Disability Studies or the BA (Disability Equality Studies) programme. The Stand-alone module is now open for applications and the deadline is the 22nd January 2016. For more information on the course you can visit www.stangelas.nuigalway.ie or contact Ms Susan Carton at scarton@stangelas.nuigalway.ie

10 tips to save on your heating bill this winter G
etting your attic and walls insulated can save you up to 30% on your heating bills, but not everyone can afford it. So we’ve come up with 10 simple, effective and cheap ways to save money on your bills. Here are a few tips that are free and it’s just a matter of being more energy conscious. 1. Adjust your thermostat By turning your thermostats down by just one degree, you can save up to 3% off your energy bill. 2. Use your central heating wisely Make sure your heating is switched off when you are out of the house. Also, most of us forget to turn the radiators off in rooms we don’t use. This can impact your energy bill. 3. Keep the radiators efficient We all know that ‘bleeding’ the radiators helps them run more efficiently by getting rid of the locked air. But who has the time to check?
That’s why we love this ‘De-aerator’ gadget for only €10.99 - it automatically keeps the air out of the radiators, making sure they are as efficient (and warm) as possible. 4. Insulate your windows Plenty of heat is lost through the windows of your home so remember to draw the curtains at night. Also, insulate the drafts around windows and doors (top tip: you can find the drafts easily by holding a lit incense stick around the window to find out where the cold air is coming in). 5. Install a chimney balloon This simple gadget will keep the drafts out and the heat in your room. All you have to do is inflate it up the chimney and it keeps the heat in nicely (please note this is not suitable for gas fires). Cost: €31.99 6. Reflect the heat back from your radiators A radiator reflector works by sending the heat from the back of your radiator
into the room, rather than against the wall, meaning you get the maximum impact from your heating system. Cost: €20.94 (you could just use this in your main living area) 7. Draft excluders Sometimes the old fashioned stuff is the best and we really like this draft excluder from Amazon. It fits snugly around the door and it can be cut to shape. Cost: €6.99 8. Plastic coat your windows If you can’t afford double (or triple glazing) put plastic film on those windows (€6 covers three windows). This will curb drafts and keep windows from rattling. 9. Keep heating vents clear Vents blocked by rugs and furniture prevent heated air from circulating efficiently. 10. Use heaters wisely In just one hour, a good heater should have done enough to heat the roomturn it off when it has the job done.

All you need to know about Renewable Energy
Solar Water Heating Heating water is the second largest energy use in typical households. Solar water heaters can be a cost-effective way to generate hot water for your home here in Ireland. One square metre of Solar Panels on your roof receives the equivalent of more than 100 litres of oil in free solar energy per year. And as a matter of fact, this is more than in Paris. Ok. But what if the sun is not shining? No problem. A solar water heater not only converts direct sunlight but also indirect sunlight into heat, so it works even when the sky is overcast. True, there will be less solar heat available during the winter, but a back-up heater will boost the water temperature. The result is 100% comfort at all times, with plenty of hot water for a fraction of the cost. Our panels have been fully tested and come with a 10 year Guarantee and are approved for the SEI Greeener Homes Scheme, which means that you can qualify for a grant of € 300 per m2(to max. 12 m2 ) How Solar water Heating Systems work Solar water heating systems include storage tanks and solar collectors. There are two types of solar water heating systems: active, which have circulating pumps and controls, and passive, which don't. Solar water heating systems include two
main items. They are Storage Tanks and Solar collectors. Types of Solar water Heating Systems There are two types of solar water heating systems: • Active, which have circulating pumps and controls, • Passive, which don't. Most solar water heaters require a wellinsulated storage tank. Solar storage tanks have an additional outlet and inlet connected to and from the collector. In two-tank systems, the solar water heater preheats water before it enters the conventional water heater. In one-tank systems, the back-up heater is combined with the solar storage in one tank. Solar Collectors There are two main forms of solar collectors or panels on the market here in Ireland Flat Plate collectors and Evacuated Tube collectors. The main component of ach is the absorber, which absorbs solar radiation and converts it into heat. In a plate collector, the absorber is in the form of a flat, black plate in a shallow metal container covered with one or more layers of transparent glass or plastic; either air or a liquid is circulated through the cavity of the container. Heat is directly transferred from the absorber to the circulating liquid (air,
water) The absorber in an Evacuated tube collector consists of a relatively narrow strip of copper with a selective black coating bonded to a single copper tube. The tube contains a special fluid which evaporates when heated. This vapour rises and transfers heat to the water circulating in the systems primary circuit. Evacuated tubes are more efficient than flat plate collectors; consequently they take up less space. They are, however, more expensive that flat plate. Generally speaking, to produce a given amount of hot water, Whether using flat plate or evaporated tubes, the installation costs will be roughly the same. Rainwater Harvesting Rainwater Harvesting Systems In Ireland, daily water consumption rate per person is 148 litres. However, only 67 litres of this is used for personal hygiene and nutritional consumption. This means that approximately 80 litres of water per person on a daily basis do not need to be high quality but while using water from the utility for all your daily water requirements you are paying the same amount of money for each litre of water. The water you are using for washing your car, watering the plants and toilet flushing is treated to the drinking water quality. It is possible to use rainwater harvesting systems for such needs. They are widely used in homes, farms, public buildings such as schools, hospitals, and hotels and many other facilities. How do they harvest water? Its early versions were simply gathering the rainwater in a tank. Today, our rain harvesting systems are much more improved and efficient with the addition of a couple of elements, such as pressure vessels, pumps and filters. A typical rainwater harvesting system has the following elements: • A surface to catch water, this is generally found on your roof • Channels for water transport from catch surface to the storage tank • Filters to filter particles • Pumps and pressure vessels to pressurise water and keep water pressurised. • Water storage tank to store ready-to-use water.
• Piping system to transport water to the points of consumption. What will be your savings? This is dependent on many factors. The most important one is, which part Ireland you live in. This is important to know the annual rain figures for that area. Also the surface you will use for catching the water plays an important role in the calculations. When some average values are taken, you can save about €1 for each square meter of your horizontal water catch surface annually. Rainwater harvesting systems pay for themselves in a short time, generally a few years. Installation and Maintenance of rainwater harvesting systems Rainwater harvesting system design and installation needs experience and training. Systems are designed to occupy minimum space especially in your garden. For this purpose, underground tanks are used. The pipe system is connected to the intended points of use. Pressurizing and pressure maintaining elements in the systems allow you to have constant water pressure in your rainwater pipe system. Rainwater harvesting system elements are made of durable materials and have a simple technical structure. These two features result in minimum maintenance requirements for the overall system. You may only need to clean filters from time to time and maybe some infrequent maintenance may be required for pumps.

Choosing the Right Kitchen for Your home
T
he kitchen is the work horse of the home and these days needs to be so much more than a place for cooking, chilling, freezing and laundry. Of all the rooms in the home it can be the most expensive to design, refit and decorate because it requires appliances as well as furniture - at the very least a cooker, fridgefreezer, oven and hob and washing machine. And because the kitchen is multifunctional, it is also the room that takes the most planning and leg work. To achieve a dream kitchen, one that is not only functional and practical, but beautiful too, requires research, budgeting and oodles of design inspiration... Decide on your kitchen layout and appliances Unless you are lucky enough to be building your own house or planning a new kitchen extension, your kitchen layout will be decided for the most part by the dimensions of your room; the smaller the space, the fewer your choices of
kitchen layout. Smaller houses and flats with kitchenette-style areas built off single living/dining rooms tend to house galley, Lshaped or U-shaped kitchens. But designing a dream kitchen can be easiest and least expensive in smaller spaces like this. There is no agonising over which appliances will go where as there tends to be little choice. And that is the joy of the small kitchen: it virtually designs itself. Another is that a small kitchen allows you to use quality materials that would be too expensive in a larger space. Once you have decided on the position of your fridge-freezer, sink, washing machine, cooker, hob, dishwasher and microwave you can give the remaining space over to wall and base unit storage. You’ll also need to spend time researching appliances to find the models that work for you – freestanding or built-in oven; electric, gas, induction or domino hob; washing machine or washerdryer/tumble dryer? In larger spaces you will have the luxury of thinking about a
kitchen beyond the basic functions of cooking, chilling, freezing and washing. You may be able to design a fully open-plan space that opens out to the garden and across your ground floor, incorporating dining, lounging, TV watching and entertaining and homeworking or study – in short, a fully multifunctional family space. In larger homes it might even be possible to remove some basic kitchen functions to other rooms by creating a separate larder, laundry or utility room. Plan your kitchen storage There is, let’s face it, an awful lot of stuff to store in a kitchen: food, drink, tableware and cutlery, glassware, pots and pans, utensils, cookware, linens, small appliances such as food mixers and blenders, cleaning and laundry products, refuse and recycling bins - all manner of paraphernalia. If you are budgeting for a small space you are likely, therefore, to want to squeeze in as many units as possible. Remember
that drawer units offer more storage capacity than cupboards, always fit the insides of doors with wire shelving for storing smaller items such as medicines or herb and spices, and make use of carousel mechanisms in corner units. Free up cupboards by keeping oftenused items that won’t gather dust, such as plates and bowls, on open shelving and by using hooks to hang up pans from wall or ceiling racks. Make sure everything you are storing away is organised and easy to access. Regularly spend time sorting through cupboards and drawers – the better organised your bits and bobs are, the less space they will take up. A larger kitchen space allows you to consider additional features such as kitchen islands and peninsula units, butcher’s blocks, glazed wall units, more extensive open shelving, larder units or kitchen dressers. Or the ultimate luxury in kitchen designing – deciding to leave a space empty. As you plan your storage, factor in your lighting too, so you will always have directed, functional lighting over worktops as well as gentler mood lighting elsewhere. Choose your kitchen style, materials and colours Our choice of kitchen style, colour and materials can be very personal, but, alongside budget, will be influenced by the type of home we live in (country cottage, Victorian or Georgian townhouse, modern flat, 1930s semi). Think about what would best suit your own home. This isn’t necessarily an interior design style that reflects the period of your house, but can be a conscious decision to do something very different – many owners of period
properties choose no-holdsbarred modern kitchens. Most people will go for one of three broad styles: traditional, modern or country and most kitchen manufacturers design their ranges of kitchen cabinetry accordingly. Within each of these core styles there are, of course, all sorts of permutations to make decisions around – fitted, freestanding, Shaker, rustic, painted, hi-gloss, retro. However as kitchens are expensive rooms to fit, remember that whatever style you choose needs to last far longer than the looks you might choose for other rooms in the house. Go for a broader look, rather than something that might be considered a narrower, more passing interiors trend. For example, rather than the recent trends for monochrome, black or
colourful designs, there may be more kitchen mileage in classic looks such as white, wood finish, and the traditional muted paint shades of blue, green or grey. Whatever style you choose, it will inform the materials you use throughout the kitchen. If you go for a country-style kitchen chances are you will have painted units, a ceramic butler sink, oak worktops, stone or brick flooring, a butcher’s block and range cooker. Essentials for a modern kitchen would probably include handle-less gloss units, stainless-steel sink and appliances, composite worktops and marble flooring. So the style you choose will, to a large extent, determine the choices you make around the colours and materials that will constitute your dream kitchen.

To increase your bank account, repair broken fountains and remove all stagnant water from your property. "Ever heard the expression, 'I just can't get my head above water'?" Karen asks. It's best not to display water-based artwork or mirrors higher than your nose, which carries the same significance in feng shui. For most of us, that means no mirrors or water scenes above the bed.
Attracting Money: Make Your Front Door Inviting If it's hard to find your front door or it's confusing as to how to get in, it'll be hard for opportunity to make its way into your life as well, explains Karen. Put in an archway or gate to denote the front door if you need to, and make sure the doorbell works. The welcome mat should be bright and fresh. Sweep the steps and sidewalk in front, and add a potted plant to the entryway. Karen's rule of thumb: "If a trick-ortreater can't tell where to go, your front door isn't clear enough.
Attracting Money: Lose Clutter, Add Plants and Water "To bring in more prosperity, it's important to create a vibrant, healthy, inspiring and clutter-free home," explains Laura. "Clutter jams up good energy and leads to procrastination. Bring in vibrant life forces such as plants and flowers, and don't forget to have fresh air circulating. Fountains are important wealth adjustments in feng shui because they stimulate prosperity and energy, and symbolize money."
Attracting Love: Create a Cozy Master Bedroom Oversized master bedrooms need to be cozier in order to have good relationship feng shui. Start by closing off any adjoining rooms, including a bathroom, office, patio or gym, suggests Karen. If there's no door, install curtains. If you have a sitting area, arrange the chairs toward each other, and downsize with a smaller bed — go from king to queen or queen to double. "When the space gets bigger and bigger, people tend to live further and further apart emotionally."
Attracting Money: Decorate in Red, Purple or Green "Color has a powerful impact on mood, and red is considered auspicious and powerful. Think of walking the red carpet or wearing a red power tie," explains Laura. Purple and green are also key colors for attracting prosperity but there's a hitch. "If you really can't stand the color green, it won't work for you. But if you do love purple, paint a wall lavender or add a violet throw to your couch. Then tune in to how your space feels. It's not just filling your home with stuff — it's about decorating with mindfulness and enhancing the vibration and power of your own home.
Attracting Money: Keep the Kitchen Clean "Your kitchen is directly related to your ability to attract money," says feng shui consultant Suzanne Metzger. Keep your pantry and refrigerator organized and full of fresh food you actually use. To attract more money, keep the stove clean — every burner must work and be used equally. Lastly, remove all clutter from the kitchen table.
Attracting Money: Bring In New Opportunities Sometimes it doesn't take money to make money — just a yard sale. "This is a zero-cost fix," explains Karen. "Take out clutter to increase prosperity; what you don't use, don't love, don't need. Space equals opportunity."
Attracting Love: Add a Splash of Pink Because it's the color of relationships in feng shui, pink is one of the best colors to decorate a bedroom with, says Ken. Pink represents love, joy, happiness and romance. It doesn't need to be a whole room, even a splash will do. Alternatively, light blue is a positive relationship color. Attracting Love: Focus On One Another When it comes to the master bedroom, it's not about the view or TV, explains Karen. "The bedroom is about passion and rejuvenation." To increase intimacy in your home, install heavy, cozy drapes over large windows, remove the TV and never sleep with a laptop, iPhone or other electronics buzzing near your bed. The bedroom should be low-tech and romantic. Avoid pictures and decor featuring anyone other than the people sleeping there — wedding pictures work, but family photos don't.
Attracting Love: Arrange Dining Table in a Circle When it comes to creating more love, the dining room is the second most important space in a home, the master bedroom being the most important. Arrange the dining table so everyone can see each other, and set out enough chairs for everyone even if the family doesn't eat together every night, says Karen. Symbolically, it's important to include the whole group.
Attracting Money: Add More Fun If your bedroom is too neat or stuck with a sterile feel, "add something whimsical that makes you smile," suggests Suzanne. It could also be artwork or a photo of a couple laughing together. This can bring positive energy into the room, and in turn, improve the relationship.
Attracting Love: Put Furniture Legs on Rugs "Never put all your furniture against the walls," says Karen Rauch Carter, feng shui consultant and author of Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life. "Furniture should be arranged to support communication, so forget where the walls are. Put at least the front legs of all furniture on the rug — not just around it — and people will sit there and talk."
Attracting Love: Add Doubles to Every Room "If you want to start a relationship, don't surround yourself with single imagery", says Laura Benko, feng shui and holistic design expert. "Avoid a single chair in the corner, solitary images in artwork and solo photographs. It's important to create the energy of partnership around you, otherwise you are continually enforcing singularity." Add a second chair to a sitting area, double up on nightstands and surround yourself with pairs of everything.
Attracting Love: Add Happy Family Photos To improve your marriage, display smiling photos of yourself as a couple and your family in the hallways, kitchen or other high-traffic areas, suggests feng shui consultant Ken Lauher. Avoid putting family photos in the master bedroom, which should only include photos of the couple. Attracting Love: Remove Negative Symbolism "To decrease stress and arguing in your home, check your surroundings," Laura suggests. "One couple that fought constantly had crisscross swords over their bed, and another couple had guns on their living room wall. Keep photos and artwork pleasing, inspiring and uplifting."
Attracting Love: Leave Room for Someone Else "Single people build rooms for single people," says Karen. "They have one chair, one nightstand and so on. Add another nightstand for your future someone." That goes for the closet too. "Don't fill it up with your stuff — honor the space and carve out a dresser drawer or a shelf that's not yours. You don't need to literally have enough room for two people to live there, just leave room for opportunity."
Attracting Love: Arrange Kids' Beds for Better Harmony "Feng shui applies to all the occupants in the house," explains Laura. "Children can be even more susceptible to their surrounding energies, so it's very important to make sure their beds are placed in the commanding position. They will feel easily startled and vulnerable if their backs are to the door." Laura also says electronics should never be stored or charged near a child's bed.

Australian Youth Theatre group bring thought-provoking play to Ballina Arts Centre
T
he way that teenagers view themselves has always been a thorny issue. With the recent explosion of social media, the issue has become bigger and more serious than it ever has been. This is the theme of Weight of Time, a play by an Australian youth theatre group called BackYardTheatreEnsemble, which will be performed at Ballina Arts Centre on Tuesday 12th January at 8pm. Written by Joachim Matschoss, and featuring music by Matthew Baker and Ross Brooks, as well as puppetry design by Rod Primrose, Weight of Time tells the story of Lily who leaves her home and works in a clothing manufacturing factory. The non-naturalistic theatre piece deals with slave labour, conditions in sweatshops,
western obsession with celebrities and fashion and more universally with issues surrounding body image. It is presented by BYTE (BackYardTheatreEnsemble), a youth theatre group presenting theatre from and for young people. This haunting theatre piece is being presented on a bare stage but soon the empty space is occupied by a mix of characters, some part of a shadow-world. They share their thoughts and their innermost feelings with the audience. This is a piece of theatre that includes sound scapes and original songs. Puppetry was included in the form of five ghostlike creatures that invade the characters’ worlds. Weight of Time is on an

The Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar is delighted to announce its Spring 2016 programme. Kicking off with the Trad dream team of Liam Ó Maonlai, Kevin Burke and Tim Edey on Thursday 14th January, some of the many other highlights include the classically-based Far Flung Trio of Katherine Hunka, Dermot Dunne and Malachy Robinson (Thursday 21st January); Mikel Murfi and One Duck Theatre’s exciting new comedy-drama The Poor little Boy With No Arms (Monday 1st February); folk troubadour and national treasure Andy Irvine (Thursday 4th February); contemporary guitar magician Preston Reed (Thursday 25th February); a night of musical hilarity with The Nualas (Thursday 10th March); and jazz sax virtuoso Andy Sheppard (Monday 14th March). And that’s only scratching the glittering surface. Plus of course a great programme of world cinema, exhibitions, family theatre with Linenhall favourites Branar and Monkeyshine, and much, much more. The Linenhall’s January-April programme is available online at www.thelinenhall.com now, and online booking won’t cost you a cent more. And as experience shows, it really can be a case of ‘book now to avoid disappointment’… The Linenhall printed programme will be available early in January. Most people overlook key to weight loss comfort. That’s not a bad thing necessarily, as long as we acknowledge it and deal with it appropriately,” Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that when the brain experiences any type of pleasure, whether from food or something else, it reacts in the same way - the brain releases the neurotransmitter, dopamine, which is sometimes referred to as a ‘feel good chemical’. “We feel good whenever that process is activated, but when we start to put food into that equation and it becomes our reward, it can have negative consequences,” she said. Studies have found a link between emotional issues, such as depression and stress, and a higher body mass index (BMI). For example, some people turn to food when they are feeling low. Dr Robinson offers the following
T
he key to weight loss is not what you put into your mouth, but why, US researchers have
said. With 2016 just weeks away, a lot of people will make a New Year resolution to lose weight, however many will not achieve this and among those who do, the majority will regain the weight they lose. In fact, studies suggest that twothirds of people who lose 5% of their total weight, gain it back, and the more weight a person loses, the lower their chances of keeping it off. However, according to Dr Diane Robinson, a neuropsychologist at Orlando Health, these figures are not surprising as most people focus
on the physical aspects of losing weight, such as diet and exercise, while ignoring the emotional aspect. “There is an emotional component to food that the vast majority of people simply overlook and it can quickly sabotage their efforts. In order to lose weight and keep it off long-term, we need to do more than just think about what we eat, we also need to understand why we’re eating,” she noted. A recent survey of over 1,000 people by Orlando Health found that 31% felt that the biggest barrier to losing weight was a lack of exercise, while 26% blamed their diet. Some 17% blamed the costs associated with maintaining a

tips to help people recognise the emotional connection they may have to food: -Keep a diary every day, writing down the food you eat and your mood at the time of eating. Look for unhealthy patterns -Identify foods that make you feel good and write down why you eat them. For example, are you eating them because you feel stressed or do they evoke a certain memory Before you eat anything, ask yourself whether you are eating it because you are hungry. If you are not actually hungry, look for the root of your motive. Dr Robinson said that the main aim is to view eating as providing nourishment, not as a reward or coping mechanism. “If getting your body in shape hasn’t work out yet, maybe this time start with your mind,” she added.
healthy lifestyle, while 12% said they did not have enough time. Just one in 10 people felt that psychological wellbeing had a key role to play in weight loss. “This may explain why so many of us struggle,” Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that from a very young age, people are emotionally attached to food. For example, as children, we may be given treats to console us when we are sad or reward us when we behave well. Furthermore, many annual celebrations, such as Halloween, Christmas and birthdays, are focused on food. “If we’re aware of it or not, we are conditioned to use food not only for nourishment, but for
