here are fears this week for over 200 jobs after the closure of the well-known fuel business McCormack Oil. In a statement to Northwest Express, Grant Thornton have confirmed that they have been appointed as receivers to McCormack Oil. There has been widespread shock expressed throughout Sligo, Leitrim and Cavan with the news that the well-known north-west business has gone into receivership. The company runs a number of garages and petrol stations across the region. They would have been the main Opel dealer in Sligo and Leitrim. Concern had been expressed earlier this week when the shops were reported closed with a notice from the receivers explaining that they were now the managers of the various shops. Grant Thornton, has confirmed to Northwest Express that Aengus Burns and Michael McAteer have been appointed as receivers to Excol Oil Limited which operates ten filling stations as well as two oil distribution facilities and McCormacks car sales and garage businesses in Sligo. The receivership affects 15 separate locations, and over 200 local employees. The statement goes on to say that efforts are already underway to sell the various businesses. It’s hoped there may be a chance to save some of the 200 jobs at risk as a result of the closure of McCormack Oil. Many of the staff affected by the closure would have been long term employees of the company.

Tellus Sets Sights on West of Ireland

W

estern Ireland is set to be the focus for Tellus – a geological mapping project which collects geophysical and geochemical data on rocks, soil and water across Ireland – in the months ahead. An airborne survey, involving a low-flying plane equipped with state-of-the-art geophysical technology, will take flight over the region covering counties Galway, southern Mayo and neighbouring parts of Roscommon, Offaly, Clare and Tipperary in upcoming months (weather permitting). With soil and stream sampling already underway in Mayo, ground teams are set to continue their geochemical surveying activity in the county and into west Galway and north Clare visiting over 5,000 locations across the summer and autumn months. Surveying by Tellus will provide an up-to-date, comprehensive picture of the geology of the region with the aim of delivering long term

economic, environmental and agricultural benefits. Data, which will be released publically, will also allow for the modernisation of geological maps for planning and research purposes, improve radon risk mapping and promote local mineral exploration. The Tellus team, led by the Geological Survey of Ireland and funded by the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, expect to have surveyed 50% of the country by late 2017. Minister for Natural Resources, Seán Kyne TD, explained the significance of the initiative: “ . . . latest technology to delve deep into the environment and natural resources of the west of Ireland. The resulting data will offer widespread benefits which will support the protection of public health, agricultural productivity and the assessment of natural resources.” To gather data the Tellus project has commissioned an aircraft equipped with the

latest geophysical technology, which surveys rural areas at a height of 60m – approximately eight times the height of a two storey house. The aircraft is a white twin propeller plane operated by the specialist survey company, Sander Geophysics Ltd and is easily identified by its red tail, black stripe and registration number C-GSGF. The airborne survey will operate safely within Irish Aviation Authority permits, however, the sound of the plane flying overhead is similar to that of a passing lorry and could startle young animals and sensitive livestock, such as horses, pedigree cattle and poultry flocks. Members of the geochemical sampling team operated by OCAE Consultants Ltd. - who work in pairs and carry identification - will meanwhile collect samples at regular intervals across the area which is renowned for its complex

Previously there had been no post drivers that are able to hold, feed and drive a post without the operator having to dismount the tractor. Ben Frost, a student at DIT, but originally from County Sligo, was named a runner-up in the competition for his project, ‘Design and build of a Human-Powered Washing Machine’ An advanced limb prosthesis, a cleanenergy inflatable tower, a flexible robotic arm and a safe-release building hook were other projects also short listed for the final, which was sponsored by Siemens. Communicating with the local community is a priority for Tellus, said Mairead Glennon, Project Manager: “Tellus operates an extensive communications programme to inform the public of survey operations. We are in close contact with the local community in the area to make sure that people and animals on the ground are not disturbed by survey operations. infusing the dazzling rhythms of the Congo with enthralling live improvisation. Known for his playing with the band, Altan, MARTIN TOURISH alternates the muscular style of Donegal traditional music with the subtleties & rich timbres of the piano accordion. Having individually performed in many of the world’s most prestigious venues, Treelan have melded their kaleidoscope of Irish, jazz, African, contemporary & world sounds into one searing, spiritual and entrancing performance to finally bring the show to audiences across Ireland for one very special tour in June. To celebrate the live ‘firework’ chemistry the band share on stage, Treelan will be recording each of the shows for a live album. They invite their audience to pack the venues & be part of the spark-filled energy of these special nights. Their virtuosic repertoire of newly composed music reels its way through what they term ‘journey pieces’: each with its own story, sounds and colours. From the middleeastern sounds of ‘Viaggio' to the chorale-like finale of ‘Errigal’ and the joyous ‘Viva la Vida’, in the melodic African language of lingala. The listener is invited into a series of worlds where layers of rhythms build and melody creates itself in spontaneous live improvisation. WARMER HOMES SCHEME

A first for Sligo IT with Honours Degree Apprenticeship

A

new honours degree programme aimed at preparing insurance professionals for the world of work, and delivered by IT Sligo, is set to transform apprenticeship training in Ireland. The Bachelor of Arts in Insurance Practice is the first professionally validated level 8 programme in Higher Education and has been designed and developed in close collaboration with the Insurance Industry. The apprenticeship will allow school leavers, graduates and career changers to get a foot in the door to one of Ireland’s largest and most diverse sectors. This programme will be delivered online by IT Sligo and the Insurance Institute over

three years to students who will be employed with many of the leading insurance companies and brokers in Ireland. The online study is all done from the apprentice’s workplace, making the programme suitable nationwide. As an ‘earn and learn’ apprenticeship, the programme will teach technical knowledge through a formal degree, while developing vital workplace skills on the job. Welcoming the new programme, Professor Vincent Cunnane, President of IT Sligo said: “This is a ground-breaking development for Irish education. It now opens the entire structure of higher education to apprenticeship programmes

and is also a perfect illustration of how external collaborative engagement and a capacity for innovation can deliver for all concerned.” The programme will begin this September, and will recruit 100 students initially. There will be potential for further growth with the addition of a Life Insurance stream next year. “It helps to solve the issues companies are facing with skills gaps and talent shortages, and it also provides people with a structured pathway into the profession,” says Paula Hodson, Director of Development Services at The Insurance Institute, which worked closely with IT Sligo in developing the new programme. ”For students, being able to earn a fullyfunded level 8 degree while working is very rare in this country.” Dr Michael Barrett, Head of Department of Business at IT Sligo, was a key member of the working group which developed the Insurance Practice Apprenticeship. “I want to pay tribute to the staff of both The Insurance Institute and IT Sligo for their tremendous work in helping to bring this game-changing apprenticeship programme to fruition in a comparatively short period of time.” he said. ”We are very excited about the potential opportunities this collaboration can trigger for both industry and higher education.” Companies will begin recruiting for apprentices in June. Minimum entry requirements include two honours in the Leaving Cert, including a pass in English/Irish and Maths. Further details can be found on The Insurance Institute’s website at iii.ie/apprenticeships. St Mary's Secondary School retiring Principal Patsy Sweeney's outstanding 44 years contribution to education In Ballina drew hundreds to her retirement function in Mt Falcon House Hotel. Among the many presentations to Patsy included a beautiful portrait of the Ox Mountain's "The Windy Gap" on behalf of the school's parents council fittingly reflecting her deep Sligo /Mayo connections. Attending the reception were standing members of the school board Roger Cawley and Tommy Geraghty, parents council members including Aine Mullarkey, Cliona Campos, Ester Cummons, Yvette McGowan, Nuala Feeney, Muredach Tuffy, and School chaplain Fr Liam Reilly. Age Friendly Awards held in Fitzpatricks Castle Hotel, Killiney. Pictured. Photo by Aidan Oliver

T

he Cranmore age friendly programme returned to Sligo victorious last week after victory at the National Age Friendly Recognition Awards held in Killiney, Dublin. The awards are a national scheme aimed at recognising best practise from across Ireland in terms of making Ireland a great country in which to grow old. Hundreds of entries were received by the awards panel under a range of categories.

The Cranmore committee took home the prize in the best Age Friendly Environment category and beat off the challenge of some fantastic initiatives. Also shortlisted from Sligo was Sligo Lend A Hand, under the Housing and Home category. The Cranmore win comes on the back of a busy first year for the age friendly group who launched their strategy for the estate last June, making Cranmore the first Age Friendly estate in

Ireland. The Cranmore initiative is the flagship project under the broader Sligo Age Friendly County programme. Once the strategy was launched, the steering group, made up of a range of key local stakeholders and members of the community, set about creating an action plan which details the key initiatives taking place under the programme and how people from the local community can get involved. They have already competed a walkability audit of the estate which will inform future capital works to make the estate easily accessible for all residents, including older people, people with disabilities and parents with young children. The group have also begun work on an intergenerational remedies booklet, worked with YouthReach on the making of memory blankets for stillborn babies and, through Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership, have initiated the hugely

successful walking groups and a come and try cycle day. Invigorated from their win, the committee are now setting out a range of projects to keep the community busy over the summer and welcome all members of Cranmore, the East Ward and the wider community to get involved. Just some of the activities planned include; The creation of a Time capsule for Cranmore which will contain the Age Friendly strategy and the recordings and written memories of people living in the estate The hosting of an Intergenerational quiz to highlight the success of bringing together knowledge from the old and young. The initiation of a safety initiative for the estate with the distribution of Messages in a Bottle and ID keyrings To find out more about the Cranmore Age Friendly programme, contact Marisa at mmoran@sligococo.ie or phone 071 9111250.

M

inister of State for Regional Economic Development Michael Ring TD was onboard this week to launch Westport’s superb traditional music, song and dance show ‘The Legend of Gráinne Mhaol’ at Westport Town Hall. The show based on the real life story of Ireland’s Pirate Queen Grace O’Malley is returning this summer to the state-ofthe-art Westport Town Hall theatre every Wednesday and Thursday from June 15th.

Speaking at the launch Minister Ring said he was delighted to be supporting an enterprise that was of immense benefit to the local economy and one of the key tourism attractions in the region. “As Minister for Regional Economic Development, I am delighted to launch the Gráinne Mhaol show as it is such an important tourism initiative not just for Westport but for the entire west of Ireland. Apart from creating local

employment for so many talented musicians, singers and dancers over the summer months, this show has also been a key factor in attracting visitors to the west of Ireland. Over the past seven years, the Gráinne Mhaol show has supported the entire hospitably sector in the region with hotels, B&B’s, restaurants and all other tourism providers benefiting as a result,” he said. Featuring a host of top class Mayo performers, the Gráinne Mhaol show has enthralled thousands of visitors to the west of Ireland and has received glowing reviews during that period with Tripadvisor calling the show ‘a must see for anyone visiting Mayo or the west during the summer’. Minister Ring said, “I am also delighted that the show is returning to Westport Town Hall as this venue is a key piece of rural economic infrastructure and another example of how small towns and villages can encourage and promote local arts, drama and music.” The Gráinne Mhaol show every Wednesday and Thursday evening from June 15th is an inspiring epic, reliving the journey of the Irish legend Gráinne Mhaol or Grace O’Malley throughout history. The show features some of Ireland’s best known and most gifted musicians, dancers and singers including James Kilbane, Darragh, Sinead and Micheal Healy, Roisin Timoney and the Cunningham Sean Nós dancers. See special interview with Roisin in the July issue of Mayo Now. The show is full of energy and enthusiasm and guarantees to keep audiences of all ages gripped from start to finish. “I encourage everyone to come and see this show as they will not be disappointed,” commented Minister Ring. A

film crew from PBS in the United States has been capturing footage in Sligo and elsewhere around the island of Ireland, for an episode of Joseph Rosendo’s Trav-

elscope. They were here as guests of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland. Joseph Rosendo’s Travelscope is an Emmy Award-winning travel series, which has

been airing on PBS (Public Broadcasting Service – the public TV network) in the US and Canada for some nine years. Joseph and his three-man crew filmed in along the Wild At-

lantic Way and in Northern Ireland, for an episode due to air this autumn. In Sligo, Joseph was filmed foraging for seaweed with Prannie Rhatigan. Footage was also captured at the Voya Seaweed Baths in Strandhill, at Tobernalt Holy Well and at Lissadell House. The crew visited Yeats’ grave in Drumcliff and Aughris Head. They stayed in The Glasshouse Hotel. Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America, said: “We were delighted to invite the team behind Joe Rosendo’s Travelscope to come and film here this week. It’s an excellent opportunity to showcase the island of Ireland to a huge audience of more than 360 million viewers across the US and in Canada. “TV and film are recognised as strong influencers on travellers everywhere, with up to 35% of people being impacted in their choice of destination by what they see on screen. Tourism Ireland regularly works with overseas TV and production companies to facilitate the making of travel and lifestyle programmes – to maximise the promotional opportunities of popular films and TV shows filmed on location here.”

focus on farming

Northwest Express June, 2016

Choosing one of the best farm sheds takes time H

ave you ever visited a farm? If you have, then you must have noticed the numerous building like structures all around the farm land. Some are used to house farm animals, whereas, some are used to store food items and tractors. These constructions are better known as farm sheds. There was a time, when such big structures were built over a time span of several weeks or months. However, these days you will find sheds which are custom made. All you need to do is provide the exact measurements of your free space and let the dealer design it for you. Once it is done, the dealer will ship you the product with a complete building manual. Read the manual and build it on your own. This entire process will barely take you more

than a couple of weeks. If you search through newspapers or on the internet, you will find several companies, which mention advertisement for farm sheds for sale. There are many dealers, who provide such custom made sheds. However, when you place an order, you have to keep certain factors in mind. Failing may prove to be a loss for you. Some of these factors are discussed below. The use of the shed If you have your own farm, then you should know that the sheds are used for different purposes. If you are planning to place an order for one of the best farm sheds, you have to determine the actual use of the

7 ways to save electricity money on dairy farms

T

he electricity bill can often add up to a substantial amount on dairy farms. Research from Teagasc has shown that electricity usage contributes on average, 0.60c/L to milk production costs. In terms of electricity consumption per dairy cow milked, the figures vary from 4 kWh/cow/week to 7.3 kWh/cow/week. This is equivalent to €0.60/cow/week to €1.10/cow/week.

Leaky taps A leak as small as 1L/hour can waste 8,500 litres of hot water and 3,800 Kwh per year. Identifying and elimination of leaks can be done with minimal effort, simply repaired at minimal costs and offer real energy savings. Repair any leaky taps promptly! Water heaters sacrificial anode While many not know what the water heater sacrificial anode is, it’s the single most important factor in whether a water heater lives of dies! It’s life span depends on the quality of water, the amount of use it gets, water temperature and the condition of the tank. Examine the condition of the water heaters sacrificial anode and replace if necessary. Standby heat loss Reduce standby heat loss. Standby heat

loss occurs in storage tanks and piping and can be reduced with additional insulation to storage tanks if appropriate and insulation of all hot water piping, and cold water piping within three to five feet of water heater. Natural light Maximise natural ventilation and light in your winter sheds wherever possible. This will help reduce the need for artificial light and can help keep bugs and infections at bay. Cooling condenser Make sure that the milk cooling condenser operates at the lowest achievable temperature (e.g. that it is cooled by fresh air of the coolest possible temperature and that it is clean, so that an unobstructed air flow is established).

structure. Whether you are planning to use it to store your vehicles or your farm products or any other product, you have to choose accordingly. Once you are clear about your needs, you will be in a better position to place an order for a good quality shed. Your budget Different dealers will quote you different rates for farm sheds for sale. When you decide to purchase a custom made shed for your farm, always plan out a budget. This is especially true if you are on a limited budget. Going ahead and buying a costly shed may not be the right thing to

do every time. The available area Another important factor to keep in mind is the actual size of the available space. Always measure the space, where you are planning to place the shed, before placing the order. If you fail to do so and order one of the farm sheds for sale based upon your rough estimate, it may prove to be a unfavorable bet for you, resulting in monetary loss. These are some of the factors to keep in mind when placing your order for one of the best custom made farm sheds. Always take your time and then go ahead with your search.

DEAD AND WORN-OUT ANIMALS

Vacuum pump motor Make sure the vacuum pump motor is kept clean and well ventilated, it can save you a lot over the course of a year. Dust It may sound silly, but dusting around the milking parlour could save you money! Dust and dirt accumulation on lamps and luminary refractors will significantly reduce the effective light, which in turn increases the need for more lighting.

focus on farming Choosing livestock for your smallholding

21

focus on farming

unsuitable for a novice to buy. In contrast, weaners from a wellmanaged smallholding, are normally docile and humanfriendly right from the start, making their handling and management so much easier. So, enquire locally for smallholdings with livestock for sale. Check advertisements in local agricultural merchants and newspapers, and national magazines like CS.

conversation with their owner. If you permit them to lamb, calve or kid in your outbuildings, you’ll experience normal and problem birthing as well. This is how Rosie and I learned about sheep management before starting our own flock. Spend time on the source farm of your potential livestock to gain familiarity with them and ask questions of the vendor. Most breeders are enthusiastic about their animals and it’s not in their interest to sell stock to someone who is unsuited to keeping them, so they may want to question you in turn!

What livestock should you choose for your smallholding? Alan Beat has many years experience with animals. Here is his advice New entrants to smallholding often ask ‘which breed of hens/ducks/sheep/pigs/cattle should we buy?’ Unfortunately, there is no simple answer. It depends on many different factors, not least of which is personal preference. However, I suggest that some commonsense principles can be applied to all types of livestock: • Buy healthy stock from a reliable small-scale source; • Keep them as naturally as possible; • Rotate them regularly to fresh ground; • Avoid overstocking; • Feed and house them properly; • Learn their normal behaviour through regular observation. Do these simple things and you should have very few problems. This article examines the first of these principles in more detail. Preparation Please, please don’t even think about buying your first livestock until you have made adequate preparations. Ensure that field boundaries are stockproof; that sufficient grazing or fodder is available; that appropriate housing and handling facilities are in place and that you have a fair grasp of how to look after them. Don’t fall into the trap of buying on impulse at a show or sale and think that you can rig something up with baler twine and old pallets ‘just for the time being’ when you get home. Such temporary arrangements are never satisfactory and risk becoming rather more permanent than

intended! It’s far better to plan and prepare in advance. Personal preference There are many different reasons for keeping livestock, but perhaps the most important is that you take pleasure in doing so. You’ll be spending a part of every single day in their company, and if that becomes a chore rather than a pleasure, you are not going to succeed with them - it’s as simple as that. So try to acquire some hands-on experience to inform your choice. Consider enrolling for a short training course covering the livestock that interest you, or offers a general overview to help you focus.Visit established smallholders to learn from their experience, and offer to help with routine tasks that enable contact with the type of stock that interest you. Handling large livestock can be daunting and may not suit you personally. Keeping geese may seem attractive, but will you cope with an aggressive gander? Milking goats may appeal, but have you ever tried - and can you stand the smell of a billy? It’s much better to explore such things before you buy, rather than afterwards. A good route to practical experience is through WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms), which enables you to work on smallholdings and farms in exchange for board and lodging; visit www.wwoof.org Another option is to initially let out your grazing to a local smallholder or farmer with the type of stock that interests you. Useful knowledge and confidence is acquired through regular observation and from

Pedigree Beginners are often advised to buy quality pedigree stock from a reputable prize-winning breeder. Such breeders play a vital role in maintaining and developing the wide range of livestock breeds that we enjoy today. The rare breeds, in particular, are often suited to a smallholding life and are especially deserving of our support. However, I strongly suggest that pedigree livestock are not the ideal first purchase for the raw novice.Pedigree strains have been selectively bred over many generations for certain characteristics. The promotion of specific attributes usually comes at the expense of others, and impacts on general qualities such as hardiness, prolificacy and longevity. As breeds diverge further from the natural form, there is an associated increase in dependence

I recommend visiting the source farm or smallholding before making the decision to purchase. Never mind if you are a novice common sense is your guide. Ask to see the breeding stock as well as their offspring and look at the conditions in which they are kept. Animals that are healthy and thriving will be clean, bright-eyed, alert, active and inquisitive, with a shine to their coat - though if pigs have full bellies, they may be contentedly sleeping! Look for a good level of rapport between the vendor and his livestock. Ask plenty of questions; a good breeder will be happy to answer. If not, look elsewhere.

on human care and intervention to maintain health and well-being. To give a simple example, primitive sheep shed their fleece naturally each spring, whereas the more developed breeds require shearing. To establish the reputation of his or her pedigree stock, the breeder needs to show them and to win prizes; but showing promotes physique and visual appeal over utility attributes, so that prizewinning stock may lack the practical characteristics that most interest the smallholder. To win consistently around the shows against stiff competition requires considerable effort and commitment alongside expert stockmanship. All this indicates that trying to keep and breed pedigree stock is

not for the fainthearted; nor, I suggest, is it for the novice. Instead of starting at the top end of the scale, I think the novice is better advised to first gain practical experience with crossbred or commercial stock that are cheaper, hardier and more widely available. When two pure breeds are crossed, the resulting progeny grow faster to a larger ultimate size than either parent; they are also usually healthier, hardier and more prolific breeders. These characteristics are collectively known as ‘hybrid vigour’. Commercial farming takes advantage of this in various ways, for example, using crossbred ewes to combine the prolificacy of one breed with the heavier lamb carcase of another.

Commercial strains often arise, not from pedigree stock, but from animals with the general characteristics of a breed. Such livestock may be far removed from any traceable pedigree, but, nevertheless, exhibit the practical attributes of the breed that smallholders value. Both crossbred and commercial stock will exhibit a wider variance than pedigree animals, but uniformity may not necessarily be desirable for the smallholder, in fact, diversity may be a distinct advantage. Both these types of livestock are easier to source and cheaper to buy than pedigree stock. The progression to pedigree stock, if that is the longterm aim, can follow as experience grows. SOURCING STOCK An important consideration to the smallholder is docility. For example, sheep from the uplands may be as wild as the hills they graze, unused to confinement by fencing and unworkable except with a well-trained dog. Most commercial sheep are also worked with dogs and hence fear humans by association. However, I suggest that a sheep flock worked without dogs, but instead trained to trust humans and follow a food bucket, is far easier for a novice to manage; so buying your starter flock of tame, buckettrained sheep from a small scale breeder provides a sensible foundation on which to build. This principle applies across the spectrum; all livestock that are handled regularly, and are relaxed in close human company, are quieter and more easily managed. To give an extreme example, I once bought some weaners (young pigs) from a semi-feral herd that roamed a large acreage without any close human

contact. The owner rigged up a temporary catching pen of wire mesh panels into which the piglets were lured by food and then trapped. When he approached the pen, the pigs went berserk and ricocheted around at high speed while

attempting to jump straight through the mesh sides - they were terrified. Somehow, we manhandled five squirming piglets into my trailer, although one jumped out again over our shoulders and sprinted away, never to be seen again! Back at our smallholding, all I glimpsed of these pigs for the first fortnight was their

backsides as they ran to hide in their house whenever approached. With patience and a regular feeding routine, they did eventually learn to tolerate my presence, but never allowed themselves to be touched and so remained difficult to move or handle. Those pigs were completely

Finally, beware of buying at a commercial market. It is so easy to make a bad mistake when you lack experience and, obviously, you can’t inspect the source farm either. If you really must follow that route, take along someone knowledgeable to advise you, and learn from them. unsuitable for a novice to buy.

Fire Season – Is your Forest Insured?

By Marina Conway, Western Forestry Co-op Summer has arrived with the lovely dry hot weather of the past few days, whilst it is very welcome it is also a worry with regard to fire risk and uncontrolled burning. A few dry days can dry out vegetation very quickly and the risk of forest fires increases dramatically. The main causes of forest fires over the past 5 years has been gorse burning, peatland burning, accidental fires and arson. Forest Owners need to be very vigiliant and make sure their forest is insured as they are required by law to replant their forest if it is burnt and one of the largest costs will be the replanting costs. The Forest Service Forest Fire Danger Rating is currently Orange – High Risk Fire be prepared!

Western Forestry Co-op (established in 1985) manages a group forest insurance scheme. The forest insurance scheme covers replanting costs up to a max of €3000/ha. For example if you planted 8 ha in 2001 and 6 ha of it burnt, it could cost you up to €18,000 to replant that area. If you received a grant and premium from the Forest Service to plant this land and did not replant it, you will be liable to repay all the grants and premiums that you received. Our forest insurance scheme covers: • Loss of Value (timber revenue) • Reconstitution (replanting costs) • Fire Brigade Charges • Public Liability (optional) For an insurance quote or more information on the Insurance Scheme, please call Sarah on 071-9161458.

naturalhealth 9 SURPRISING HEALTH BENEFIT S OF T OMAT OES

The information provided to you on this page is for educational purposes only. It is not a substitute for medical advice and it is important that you do not make medical decisions without first consulting your doctor or other healthcare professional.

T

hey’re sweet, juicy, delicious - and they pack a powerful nutritional punch. Here, nine surprising benefits of the simple tomato.

Tomatoes 101 One serving of red, ripe, raw tomatoes (one cup or 150 grams) is a good source of Vitamins A, C, K, folate and potassium. Tomatoes are naturally low in sodium, saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories. Tomatoes also provide thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, magnesium, phosphorus and copper, all of which are necessary for good health. On top of that, one serving of tomatoes gives you 2 grams of

fiber, which is 7 per cent of the daily recommended amount. Tomatoes also have a relatively high water content, which makes them a filling food. In general eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, including tomatoes, confers protection against high blood pressure, high cholesterol, strokes, and heart disease. One tomato packs one powerful punch of nutrition, but there’s much more!

Healthy skin Tomatoes make your skin look great. Beta-carotene, also found in carrots and sweet potatoes, helps protect skin against sun damage. Tomatoes’ lycopene also makes

skin less sensitive to UV light damage, a leading cause of fine lines and wrinkles. Strong bones Tomatoes build strong bones. The vitamin K and calcium in tomatoes are both very good for strengthening and repairing bones. Lycopene also has been shown to improve bone mass, which is a great way to fight osteoporosis.

Fight cancer Tomatoes are a natural cancer fighter. Lycopene (again!) can reduce the risk of several cancers, including prostate, cervical, mouth, pharynx, throat, esophagus, stomach, colon, rectal, prostate and ovarian cancer. Tomatoes’ antioxidants (vitamins A and C) fight the free radicals which can cause cell damage. Balance blood sugar Tomatoes can keep your blood sugar in balance. Tomatoes are a very good source of chromium, which helps to regulate blood sugar. Protect vision Tomatoes can improve your vision. The vitamin A that tomatoes provide can improve vision and help prevent night blindness. Recent research shows that consuming tomatoes may help reduce the risk of macular degeneration, a serious and irreversible eye condition. Healthy hair Tomatoes will even make your hair look better. The vitamin A found in

tomatoes works to make hair strong and shiny. (Sorry, tomatoes cannot help much with thinning hair — but they will make the hair you have look better!)

Prevent kidney stones and gallstones Tomatoes can help prevent kidney stones and gallstones. Some studies suggest that kidney and gall stones are less likely to form in people who eat tomatoes without the seeds. Reduce chronic pain Tomatoes can reduce chronic pain. If you are one of the millions of people who deal with mild to moderate chronic pain (such as from arthritis or back pain), tomatoes may be a pain-buster. Tomatoes are high in bioflavonoids and carotenoids, which are known anti-inflammatory agents. Chronic pain often involves chronic inflammation, so attacking the inflammation is a good way to fight the chronic pain. (Many commercial drugs that fight pain are actually anti-inflammatory drugs.) Lose weight Tomatoes can help you lose weight. If you are on a sensible diet and exercise plan, build lots of tomatoes into your everyday eating. They make a great snack and can be used to “bulk up” salads, casseroles, sandwiches and other meals. Because tomatoes contain lots of water and fiber, they are

Easy Ways to Eat More Tomatoes · Add sliced tomatoes to sandwiches — from tuna to turkey · Chop tomatoes in salad (leave them at room temperature, if possible) · Use marinara or tomato sauces (canned, cooked, or homemade) on pasta; this can be big calorie savings when you swap out creamy sauces for tomato-based sauces · Drink tomato juice or vegetable juice with tomatoes · Tomatoes for breakfast? Top scrambled eggs with coarsely chopped tomatoes or add them to a breakfast taco · Eat tomatoes as a mid-afternoon snack (my father used to eat them like an apple — but you can use a knife and fork) · Make a tomato sandwich — this is a sandwich that stars the tomato. The classic dressing for this sandwich is mayonnaise, but I know some people who like tomatoes and mustard · Add canned or stewed tomatoes to soups and stews, like vegetable soup or beef stew · Serve stewed tomatoes over a baked potato (also great on mashed potatoes) · Make your own salsa with lots of fresh tomato — salsa is a great replacement for high-fat salad dressings as well as being tasty on meats, fish, and eggs.
