PRING may be here in earnest, the weather is getting warmer and we gather to celebrate our Irishness around the world and in our local communities. But it is against a backdrop of imminent decisions which could sound the deathknell of community life as we know it. Claims that An Post is targeting 80 (or is it 200?) rural post offices for closure as part of a plan to plug annual losses of €12m is nothing short of “frightening” and similar sentiments have been expressed by community activists across the country. Almost a third of the country’s post offices have shut in the past 20 years, leaving just over 1,100, half of them loss-making. Official figures show 137 closed from 1997 to 2001, 148 from 2002 to 2006, 197 from 2007 to 2010 and single-digit closures annually since. The latest traunch may represent the heaviest hit yet on rural Ireland. An Post have officially denied that any such decisions have been made but and a letter from An Post CEO David McRedmond to postmasters stating he expected “major decisions” by the summer speaks for itself. An Post also said that they are planning for “a commercially viable and self-funded network which will meet the needs of citizens across the State”. Lofty words? However, it seems they are still overlooking the fact that the rural post office network is much more than a business model; it is central to the lifeblood of countless communities in rural Ireland. At a local level we see the impact. On the N59 (Sligo-Ballina) there is no post office or shop between Dromard and Dromore-West. Recent years have seen the closure of post offices in Cloghans and Knockmore, and other regions in Ballina’s rural hinterland. Continued on Page 2

epresentatives of the Castlebar Municipal District and Mayo County Council, who are in New York for the St Patrick’s Day period, met with senior executives from Tourism Ireland in New York last week. They were briefed on Tourism Ireland’s extensive promotional programme for 2017, which is in full swing right now. Tourism Ireland aims to build on the success of 2016, which was the fourth record-breaking year in a row for Irish tourism from the United States. Tourism

Ireland is prioritising North America this year, as a market which offers a strong return on investment, in terms of holiday visitors and expenditure. Our important ‘culturally curious’ and ‘social energiser’ audiences are being targeted with distinctive vacation experiences, events and special offers tailored to their interests. the shoulder and off-peak seasons. With the recent announcement by Norwegian of new flights to Ireland from New York (Stewart International Airport) and Providence (Rhode Island), the total number of transatlantic airline seats this summer will be 60,000, from 20 North American gateways to the island of Ireland – that’s 10,000 additional seats (+20%) compared to summer 2016. Alison Metcalfe, Tourism Ireland’s Head of North America, said: “We were delighted to meet with the representatives of the Castlebar Municipal District and Mayo County Council and to have the opportunity to brief them about the extensive promotional programme we are undertaking in the United States this year. Our ambition is to surpass the record-breaking performance of 2016 and to deliver a +9% increase in revenue and a +6% increase in visitor numbers from North America in 2017 i.e. €1.6 billion generated by 1.7 million visitors. Over the coming week, Tourism Ireland will participate in and promote the island of Ireland at a range of St Patrick’s Day events across the United States. Chicago will also be going all out to celebrate St Patrick and Ireland once again this year, with numerous buildings and sites across the city ‘seeing green’ – including Navy Pier, the John Hancock Center, the Civic Opera House, the Wrigley Building, Novak Construction, Sheraton Grand Hotel, State Street, Chicago Gaelic Park and One Prudential Plaza, as well as the Irish American Heritage Center, which joins the initiative for the first time.

Bumper music fare in Coleman Centre A fabulous trio, Mossie Martin (fiddle), Noelle Carroll (flute) and Sean Carroll (button accordion) will perform in the Coleman Music Centre, Gurteen, on Saturday, 25th March. Mossie, originally from near Keadue, Co. Roscommon, learned his music from Longford fiddler, Seamus Thompson. He has played extensively abroad in recent years in Australia, France and Spain. A tutor with FETAC, he currently teaches a PLC course in Traditional Irish music in Drumshanbo and is also a member of the All Ireland winning Dartry Ceili Band. Noelle, from Teesan, Drumcliffe, Co. Sligo, has been involved in teaching the younger members at the Fred Finn CCE branch over the past number of years and is also a member of the Dartry ceili band, as is her older brother, Sean, who was taught by his father, Michael, originally from Co. Leitrim and who played with the well-known Leitrim Ceili Band. It promises to be a bumper evening.

In East Mayo the community in Kilmovee have seen the removal of social payments from the local P.O., with the local Community Council having to provide transport for elderly people to travel to Kilkelly each week to collect their money. All of this comes in the wake of a plethora of bank branch closures across the northwest in recent years

This scenario is mirrored in other small towns and villages. While the economic decisions are planned nobody seems to be interested in putting some alternative plan in place to preserve life in rural Ireland. If the Expressway bus service disappears is there a plan to replace it? Our economy may be recovering but the numbers benefitting are getting fewer and fewer. Yes, the weather is getting warmer, but are we facing a season of protest?

the Shrine who run the HUB programme every summer, offering children and young people a fun, safe and happy environment to learn more about their faith. The activities will be available in the Rest & Care Centre to coincide with the talks throughout the day. Youth are also asked to get involved in the Mass which will be celebrated by at 3pm in the Basilica.

T

he days are getting longer and there is plenty of optimism in the air at Knock Shrine as preparations are underway for new faith events taking place throughout the spring and summer months. The latest faith renewal events have been developed to offer new and engaging day retreats, workshops, courses and spiritual concerts to the local community and pilgrims visiting the world famous Shrine. As with previous events, the new programme includes a mixed array of training and enrichment days and workshops to appeal to a broad audience and offer hope, healing and enrichment. These faith programmes aim to reach out to an ever wider range of people by focusing on topics that are engaging, relevant and challenging, encouraging people to reexamine the role of God in our lives and nourish our own personal spirituality. Celebrating Family; Preparing for World Meeting of Families 2018 On Saturday 8th April, Knock Shrine will welcome Archbishop Michael Neary and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin for one of the most important events of the year entitled ‘Celebrating Family; Preparing for World Meeting of Families 2018’. This will be a day-long event, the main purpose of which is to invite families to the National Shrine and help them to prepare for the World Meeting of Families next year. It is also an important aspect of trying to link in with Pope Francis’ message of renewal of faith in Ireland and of the family. Fr Richard Gibbons, P.P., Rector of Knock Shrine is hoping that the day will be both informative and inspiring for families. ‘We hope that it will offer families the opportunity to start thinking about the

WMOF 2018 and how it can inspire and guide them in family life. The family as a collective, faces enormous challenges today, however it is hoped that this event will be a positive and meaningful connection for people, facilitating open discussion, time for questions as well as a prayerful and special day with family Mass celebrated by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin and Archbishop Michael Neary.’ The programme for the day will include a presentation from keynote speaker Fr Timothy Bartlett, Secretary General for the World Meeting of Families who will discuss the theme chosen by Pope Francis for WMOF2018, ‘The Gospel of the Family: Joy for the World’ and provide information to give families a better understanding of the various aspects of the celebration. Breda O’Brien, columnist for the Irish Times will facilitate a public discussion from a number of families who will speak of their own personal experiences and the challenges of living as a Catholic family today. This will be an open and relatable discussion for families coming to Knock for the day. The afternoon will offer opportunity for questions and further discussion with the speakers. Fr Richard continued, ‘In light of all the heart breaking news that has come out in recent weeks, it is hoped that this will offer people the opportunity to engage with the new direction Pope Francis is taking and renewed hope for the life of the Church in Ireland.’ A Great Welcome for Families A range of workshops and activities will be made available for children (aged 5 years and over) and young people who are attending the day with their parents. This will be facilitated by the Youth Ministry at

National Mass of Thanks for Organ Donors and their Families To mark Organ Donor Awareness Week 2017, a special Mass will be celebrated at Knock Shrine on Sunday 2nd April at 12 noon. This day is being organised by the Family Centre at Knock Shrine in solidarity with those who are waiting and those who have received an organ. Giving the gift of life is considered by many to be the ultimate act of kindness, and this week is a great opportunity to highlight the phenomenal impact organ donation can have on a person’s life and their families. Monica Morley, director of the Family Centre at Knock Shrine is anticipating the day, ‘Thousands of lives are touched by organ donors every year. The Mass is a celebration for all who have been saved, and indeed for those whose loved one were organ donors and wish them and their wonderful legacy to be remembered. It is also to give families a chance to be a part of a special and prayerful day, whether it’s to give thanks or

to pray for a loved one. Families will be taking part in the liturgy and it is hoped that it will be a very special and memorable occasion for all.’ Organ Donor Awareness Week is organised by the Irish Kidney Association and is a great opportunity to get people thinking about their potential to become a donor and get a discussion going around it with their friends and family. The focus of the Week is to raise awareness about the ongoing and ever increasing demand for organ transplantation which relies on the public for organ donation. Its key message is that families need to talk and keep the reminders of their willingness to donate visible. Those wanting to find out more about the Mass can contact Knock Shrine on (094) 93 88100 or log on to www.knockshrine.ie Spiritual Retreats and Training Days Deirdre Ni Chinneide returns to the Shrine on Saturday 6th May with a day retreat entitled ‘Resting in the Arms of God’. This is a follow on from the successful ‘Living in Hope’ retreat which was held last year. A number of practical workshops will also take place, including the ‘Enrichment Days for Parish Ministry’ with John Paul Sheridan and Colette Furlong for Ministers of the Eucharist and the Word, Adult Catechism Studies, ‘Leading God’s People in Prayer’ with Mary Connolly and ‘Quiet Days for Busy’ people day retreats taking place on March 11th and April 29th.

S

ince the pulling of Turlough Park’s successful Feile na Tuaithe this year concern has grown, particularly among local councillors, about the future of the National Museum of Country Life near Turlough village, close to Castlebar, which employs more than 40 people and is regarded as a major economic and cultural asset to the region. These concerns were not alleviated following an “update statement” provided recently by Tony Candon, manager-keeper at the National Museum of Country Life, who claimed that the closure of the Museum was ‘never, ever a consideration of the National Museum of Ireland’. The concern had arisen also as a result of some statements by the National Museum of Ireland over funding issus, but Mr. Candon sought to “put minds at ease” by referring to the Museum of Country Life as a “story of ongoing development”. However, Councillors Al McDonnell and Cyril Burke were unhappy about the absence of a permanent reassurance from Mr. Candon and the lack of specifics in his statement. When the presentation was over, Cllrs Al McDonnell and Cyril Burke expressed serious concerns. According to Councillor McDonnell (FF): “Turlough Park is the biggest tourist attraction in this municipal district. This presentation, coupled with concerns over GMIT, could lead to a very gloomy future for Castlebar. We will fight for both.” Cllr Cyril Burke (Fine Gael) took issue with Mr Candon’s presentation and the museum on a number of points.“I’m concerned that too many things are being seen as a challenge and not an opportunity. I’ve had conversations with

people involved. Like any business, the museum is about having a product and the second part of that is getting people in to see the museum. I’m concerned visitors are not pushing as open a door as it should be. “Féile [na Tuaithe] has been more than successful, and I have grave concerns about the fact that it has been pulled and about the effect this will have on visitor numbers. “I’m also concerned that people who run a falconry business who approached the Museum about running falconry at the museum have instead moved elsewhere … That could have brought greater numbers to the museum,” said Cllr Burke, adding: “The museum had no marketing person for 18 months. That should have been brought to our attention.” Cllr McDonnell was critical of the fact that no major exhibition is planned for the museum in 2017, as well as cuts in curatorial staff and the lack of an agricultural curator. He added that the decision to locate the museum in Mayo was met with ‘outright resistance’ by the board of the National Museum in the mid 1990s, and he praised Taoiseach Enda Kenny, then the Minister for Tourism and Trade, for ‘using his good offices at the time’ to secure the location in Mayo. Cllr Michael Kilcoyne (Independent) criticised the fact that councillors first heard about the cancellation of May’s Féile na Tuaithe at last Thursday’s meeting, while Mayo County Council Chief Executive Peter Hynes had been told last autumn. Mr. Candon thanked the councillors for their ‘very constructive and very helpful’ comments. He said that the cancelling of

Féile na Tuaithe, which attracted close to 30,000 visitors some years, was due to resources, both in terms of finances and staff. Earlier, he said the Féile na Tuaithe was ‘distorting other activities’ and that ‘other areas are seen as a higher priority within the museum, and I’d agree with this’. He described the event as ‘a victim of its own success’, and said the grounds were operating at breaking point when 28,000 visitors turned up two years ago. He said that the museum co-funded Féile na Tuaithe with Mayo County Council for three years, a term that ended in 2016. While it would not run in May this year, it might return in 2018, though not in the same format. Mr. Candon admitted that the government moratorium on recruitment had prevented positions being filled, but that this was changing, and a new marketing officer has been in place since Christmas. Replying to councillors, he said that the National Museum ‘as a whole was threatened with closure’, as its budget allocation was ‘not adequate’ in recent years, but it received ‘just enough’ Government funding to prevent it from becoming insolvent. “We have been struggling over the last number of years,” he admitted, but added that the facility has provided a boost to the area since it opened as a National Museum in 2001. Conceding that no major exhibition is planned for 2017, he said ‘I haven’t the staff’. He stated that he had requested more staff to facilitate such an exhibition, but his request was not approved.

IT Sligo’s New Head Of Engineering & Design - Úna Parsons I nstitute of Technology, Sligo is pleased to confirm the appointment of Úna Parsons as the new Head of School of Engineering & Design. She succeeds Mr Shane Fanning who is leaving the Institute to take up a new management position with the medical devices company Mallinckrodt Ltd. An experienced and award-winning Chartered Engineer, Úna has held the post of Head of Department of Mechanical & Electronic Engineering at IT Sligo since 2012, but her association with the college stretches back to her own student days – as a toolmaking apprentice in the former Sligo Regional Technical College (RTC). As Head of Department of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Úna has been instrumental in the recent development of IT Sligo’s new vision to become a Precision Engineering and Manufacturing Centre of Excellence. She was also a key initiator in the establishment of the Engineering Expo at IT Sligo, which is an annual showcase of engineering, collaborating with local industry and schools across the North West region.

Prior to joining IT Sligo, Úna was Chief Executive Officer of the Crafts Council of Ireland and previously held senior roles with Engineers Ireland and Bausch & Lomb – one of the world’s largest suppliers of eye health products. As Industry Director with Engineers Ireland, she helped devise and develop the inaugural Engineers Week in 2007, which has become a nationwide, week-long programme of events celebrating the world of engineering. “It is a privilege to lead IT Sligo’s School of Engineering & Design through the next phase of its development and expansion,” said Úna. “As a former apprentice here, I have a particular affinity with the Institute, its students and its heritage within the engineering and manufacturing sectors. I also have a great interest in the creative sector and, given that the School’s portfolio also includes the Institute’s department of Computing and Creative Practices, I look forward to developing IT Sligo’s contribution to the region’s cultural and creative offering.” Úna is originally from Dublin and lives in Gurteen, County Sligo.

Broad welcome for new Traveller status THERE has been widespread welcome across the North West of the recognition of travellers as a distinct ethnic group, the culmination of a campaign that has been waged for decades. In Sligo alone there is an estimated 500 travellers from a nationwide population of approximately 40,000 of the ethnic population and Sligo Traveller Support Group (STSG) has expressed its delight with the decision of the State to make such a significant statement. Numerous bodies have recommended for some time that the Irish state recognises Traveller ethnicity including the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission, the Ombudsman for Children, and a number of United Nations committees such as the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women. STSG manger Bernadette

Maughan said: “This is a truly historic day for Travellers in Ireland. “After years of hard work we are absolutely delighted that our unique culture, identity, history and ethnicity will be formally recognised by the State. “On a practical level it will help direct much needed targeted services at those who need education, medical and accommodation supports. What is as important though is the confidence this historic announcement will give us as a community to meet the challenges that we face. “It is also fantastic for young Travellers in that they can now grow up confident that their own identity, culture and history is as important as any other group in society”. The new status for the Travelling community has also been welcomed by Councillor Martin Baker, chairperson of the

Traveller Accommodation Consultative Committee. He said the Travelling community have their own traditions and ways and these needed to be respected. “No matter who you are or your background everyone should be treated equally,” he said. In Sligo local Traveller, Bernard Sweeney, who made headlines when he contested the last General Election, said that as far as he was concerned the recognition of Traveller ethnicity was just phase one but they would now be the seeking of a formal apology from the State for forcing assimilation into the settled community on them. He said this was evident across all areas of Irish life including the education system and with regard to children taken into care. It had led to a lot of confusion amongst the

Bernard Sweeney

Travelling community and an identity crisis for many. “While the recognition is an historic moment for the Travelling community it is very much a bitter sweet moment,” he said. It won’t obliterate all the prejudices. There is much more to be done. Mr. Sweeney reiterated his claim that the 40,000 travelling community were the descendants of the true Irish natives.

F

oróige held its annual National Volunteer Conference in Sligo - the European capital of volunteering for 2017 - this weekend (3-5th March, 2017). Hundreds of volunteers travelled from all over Ireland to attend the conference involving keynote speaker John Davis, Professor of Childhood Inclusion at University of Edinburgh; to participate in workshops and exchange ideas on best practice in youth work. Twenty-six volunteers attended the conference from Mayo. Foróige also launched the results of a survey of 500 Foróige volunteers it conducted this year. The findings included: Over 95% of Foróige volunteers feel they benefit from volunteering The biggest benefit volunteers gain from volunteering is ‘A greater sense of belonging’ The biggest challenge facing volunteers working with young people was found to be ‘Too few volunteers’ according to over 31% of respondents 89% of volunteers feel youth work needs

greater resources When asked what aspect of youth work do you think needs greater resources? The largest proportion said ‘more funding for rural youth work’ The volunteers answered that the greatest benefit of youth work to young people is the ‘Opportunity to express themselves in a safe environment’ Sean Campbell, CEO of Foróige said “the work of youth work volunteers is crucial to the well-being of young people, what this survey shows is that it is also of enormous benefit to the adult volunteers. “Volunteers feed back to us all the time that helping young people, getting involved in their local community and meeting other volunteers is one of the most positive forces for good in their lives. That amazing feeling you get from giving of your time and energy to something so important really can’t be replicated in any other way. “Volunteering can reduce stress, help you find friends, teach new skills and even

advance your career. Giving to others can also protect your mental health by keeping you mentally stimulated and providing a sense of purpose. We all need connection to others; it’s fantastic that our volunteers gain so much whilst giving to the young people of their communities. “Without volunteers Foróige simply could not do the work that it does in reaching 50,000 young people each year through clubs, projects and programs like Youth Citizenship, Leadership and Big Brother Big Sister. They have touched so many young lives and empowered young people to develop; express themselves; and achieve things they may never have thought possible. “We have an amazing army of 6000 volunteers in Foróige, but as the survey shows we need more, especially males. If you would like to make a difference to a young person’s life visit http://www.foroige.ie/volunteer-enquiry and get in touch with us,” Mr Campbell finished.

Is new Crossmolina Fire Station just an election promise? MAYO Deputy Dara Calleary, in addition to many local people, have expressed dismay and frustration that a new fire station promised for Crossmolina will not be delivered before 2020 despite funding for the project being announced two weeks prior to last year’s general election. In reply to a parliamentary question placed by Deputy Calleary, the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government Simon Coveney confirmed that the current indicative year for delivery of the project is 2020. Deputy Calleary said: “To be quite frank I am disgusted with the reply received from the minister. To make a funding announcement two weeks before a general election but to have no intention of delivering on the promise for a further four years stinks of a vote-grabbing exercise and nothing more. “A new fire station for Crossmolina is a much-needed facility. The fire personnel in the town do an amazing job in difficult circumstances and the existing station is not fit for purpose. “In the past number of years we have seen at first hand the fantastic assistance

that Crossmolina’s Fire Service provides to the community, not least when the town was under water after the River Deel burst its banks. “I am now calling upon the gov-

Leitrim native China bound after “greatest trick shot ever”

North West Counselling D

romahair native Shane O’Hara is competing in the Chinese World Pool Championships after what has become known as the greatest trick-shot ever has gone viral. Shane, known to many in Leitrim pool circles having competed for the Leitrim Pool Association for 10 years, manages a bar in Bristol and created a trick shot to generate publicity for the sports bar. He was pleasantly surprised to discover his efforts were viewed 40,000 to 50,000 times. Twelve months later Shane decided to challenge himself further and as he said himself he “put a bit of extra effort in”. That effort has certainly paid off and the video he uploaded in January has to date been viewed in excess of 250 million times! Setting-up the trick shot took four hours while it took a further three or four hours of trial and error before the shot was successfully completed in the small hours while the premises was closed. The lengthy period setting up the

shot was followed by a similar period of trying to complete the incredible shot, which begins with a golf ball being putted down a flight of stairs. Words can’t truly do justice to what follows but numerous snooker and pool tables are all utilised before a second golf ball is seen rolling along the bar counter and into a practice putting golf hole. The 59-second video took between 70 and 80 takes to get just right but Shane felt that if the pressure was truly on and he was given just one go to nail the shot he would have been able to do it. The video proved to be an instant success and media outlets in the UK were quick to pick up on the trick shot with various BBC programmes particularly impressed. In the weeks since the video became a viral sensation Shane has been asked many times if he really succeeded in completing the shot in one take. “Loads of people are saying it is fake but that is giving me way too much

credit!”, he said. Since it was uploaded the video of the incredible shot has gone viral throughout the UK and further afield but surprisingly there wasn’t a huge reaction in Ireland and such was the amount of media interest in England Shane didn’t have time to fully promote his exploits back home. As a result of the exposure he has received Shane has been invited to compete in the Chinese Pool World Championships which are currently underway. Shane explained it is a new cue sport which is taking Asia by storm and this week’s tournament will feature a selection of snooker and pool players from throughout the world. Talking about his chances in China Shane noted, “I would be more likely to beat the snooker players. The way the game is designed, my skills outweigh theirs.” The benchmark for aspiring athletes in any sport is said to be 10,000 hours of practice and Shane says, “I’ve blitzed that multiple times.”

Calls for more support for GMIT MAYO county councillors last confirmed their support for the future sustainability of the Castlebar campus of GMIT and called on the Minister of Education to provide funding to secure its future. Councillors discussed for over an hour at the monthly meeting of the Council a special motion calling for all existing programmes and courses available at the Castlebar campus to be retained and appropriate additional courses be provided to ensure the ongoing viability and expansion of the campus. Last month management at GMIT informed staff at the Castlebar campus and local politicians of plans to cut four courses at the campus, namely Heritage Studies, Building Management, Digital Media and the Higher Certificate in Business in ICT Skills and Administration. Consequently, management were accused of undermining the growth

and development of the campus in Castlebar. Particular criticism was directed at Dr Fergal Barry, President of GMIT, who was accused by a number of councillors of being arrogant to them when they met him to discuss the future of the campus. Swinford based councillor Michael Smyth said that boards of Institutes of Technology are obliged to have an approved and published strategy and the Castlebar campus currently did not have one. “One can only question the commitment of those who have responsibility to have such a plan in place at this stage, but one must also question the timing of the new unpublished or unapproved strategy to remove so called ‘non-viable programmes’,” he said. Cllr Smyth also noted that Letterkenny IT has a campus in Killybegs which recently had €3 million

in funding ring-fenced by the Department of Education and asked why Mayo always had to be the poor relations? Picking up on this point, Cllr Michael Kilcoyne said that the Castlebar campus was €1.8m in debt because it was not receiving adequate funding from Galway. He also called on funding to be ring-fenced for the Castlebar campus and proposed a Council delegation meet with the Minister for Education to lobby for funding, a proposal which was unanimously supported by his fellow councillors. A public meeting on the future of the Castlebar campus of GMIT took place in the TF Royal Hotel in Castlebar on Friday, March 10th The speakers included Lisa Chambers, TD, former councillor Paddy McGuinness who was to the fore in campaigning for a third level campus in Castlebar during the 90s - and Wilson Bird of Castlebar Chamber of Commerce.

Learn to Coach for Health: A unique Postgraduate Applied Health and Wellness Coaching programme now taking applications at St. Angela’s St Angela’s College, Sligo is taking applications for the postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Applied Health and Wellness Coaching (Level 9, NFQ). The aim of the course is to provide each participant with the education and skills needed to coach people towards improving on their existing health status, whatever that might be. Coaching is used in a wide variety of ways and is used to support people with whatever goals they have for their health and fitness. Examples of possible goals are “establishing a fitness regime, achieving weight loss, managing stress”. Coaching is particularly useful for those coping with chronic illness and evidence suggests that maintaining underlying health and fitness is particularly important for those with chronic illness as taking control of one’s health leads to better patient outcomes and fewer periods of acute illness. The programme will be led by Dr Helen McGloin and Dr Patsy McSharry who are both certified Health and Wellness Coaches and Lecturers in the Department of Nursing, Health

Sciences & Disability Studies. “The course is aimed towards graduates of health, nutrition and/or fitness, health care professionals or any person who has a role in supporting people to change health behaviour” explains Dr McGloin. The programme is unique in Ireland and will be delivered in a blended learning format. “Students will study independently at home, supported by on-line lectures and assignments and attend a small number of scheduled workshops” adds Dr McGloin. “The programme can be undertaken over two to five years on a part-time basis, completing modules at their own pace.” The flexible nature of the programme allows students to complete all six modules to receive a postgraduate Diploma in Applied Health and Wellness Coaching or complete the first three modules to attain a postgraduate Certificate. For more information about the course you can visit www.stangelas.nuigalway.ie or contact Margaret Hession at mhession@stangelas.nuigalway.ie or 071 9195540

Daffodil Day to support thousands of people affected by cancer. People of Mayo have been instrumental in raising these funds and we thank you for your staunch support to date. As cancer incidence increases, we need your support more than ever before to ensure no one in our community faces cancer alone. Please give what you can on Daffodil Day and make a difference to the lives of cancer patients and their families.” Funds raised support a range of services, including the Society’s Night Nursing service which provides palliative care to cancer patients in Ireland, allowing those at the end of their cancer journey to remain at home with their loved ones. Last year 82 cancer patients in Mayo received 490 nights of care through the Society’s Night Nursing service. Local Night Nurse Margaret Brady said, “When I go into a patients home I try to bring a sense of calmness, sensitivity, kindness and understanding while caring and comforting patients’ and their loved ones. The relief and reassurance expressed by families in the knowledge that their loved ones’ are comfortable is evidence of the invaluable service provided by Night Nursing. As a professional health carer it is most fulfilling to be of assistance to the patient and family at such a precious and traumatic time. Funds raised on Daffodil Day enable Cancer Care to provide this Night Nursing service”. Ms. Brady outlined many of her rewarding one-to-one experiences as a cancer night nurse. Speaking to North-West Express Volunteers organiser Edel Gallagher spoke about the contribution of the volunteers to this special day. affodil Day committees in Mayo launched Daffodil Day 2017 on Wednesday, March 8th, to support the growing number of people being diagnosed with cancer in Ireland. March 24th is the 30th anniversary of Daffodil Day and volunteers in Mayo will be out in force once again to raise crucial funds to help those affected by cancer. Every three minutes in Ireland a person receives a cancer diagnosis. Over a 12 month period, 1,165 people were diagnosed with cancer in Mayo*. In order to provide information, support and care to people affected by cancer, the Irish Cancer Society needs to raise €3.98 million this year on Daffodil Day. Speaking at the launch Mary Callaghan of the Swinford Daffodil Day Committee and Mark Mellett, Head of Fundraising, Irish Cancer Society, urged members of the public to show their support for cancer patients and their families on Daffodil day. Mary Callaghan said: “Since 1988 €66m has been raised nationwide on

James Kenny, Tourism Ireland (right), accepts the award for the Wild Atlantic Way of ‘Best International Self-Drive Route’, from Mr Liu Yi, CEO of HuiZuChe.Pic – Tourism Ireland

T

HE Wild Atlantic Way has been named a ‘Best International Self-Drive Route’, at an awards ceremony in Shanghai this week. The awards were organised by HuiZuChe, a car rental portal and one of the top travel companies in China offering self-drive holidays. The Wild Atlantic Way was one of the destinations listed in the ‘Best International Self-Drive Route’ category – in good company with the likes of other driving routes in Sweden, Malaysia, Tasmania, California and Florida, to take the number one spot.

The winning routes were chosen by about 10 million Chinese travellers, who voted through an online system. Accepting the award, James Kenny, Tourism Ireland’s Manager China, said: “We are delighted that the Wild Atlantic Way has been named a ‘Best International Self-Drive Route’ in the important HuiZuChe awards. Chinese travellers have so much choice nowadays, which makes it more important than ever for us to ensure that the island of Ireland really stands out from other destinations – so this award is really good news as we roll out our busy promotional drive for

2017. This accolade will help to inspire Chinese holidaymakers to choose the Wild Atlantic Way and the island of Ireland; it also provides Tourism Ireland with another great hook to continue to promote Ireland as a ‘must see’ destination in 2017.” Tourism Ireland has offices in Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Chengdu. As well as working closely with Chinese travel and lifestyle journalists, the organisation also undertakes co-operative promotions with key partners – including airlines and the travel trade.

WHAT IS ROOT TREATMENT?

R

oot Treatment, root canal, call it what you will, this is one area of dental treatment which seems to strike dread into the heart of very many of our patients. Yet it is normally a reasonably straightforward process, and it allows the dentist to save teeth which would otherwise have to be extracted. Root treatment entails removing dead and/or infected tissue from inside the tooth and filling the resultant space. In the centre of all teeth there is a hollow space, known as the root canal. In a healthy tooth this space contains the nerve and its attendant blood vessels. These can become damaged by trauma to the tooth, by decay, or even by extensive dental work, such as deep fillings. If the damage is severe enough, the nerve will die. Once it has died it can very easily become infected, leading to pain and sometimes swelling. This is what is commonly known as a dental abscess. When this has happened the dentist has only 2 alternatives; extract the tooth, or perform root treatment. In the latter case, the centre of the tooth is opened and any dead, dying or infected tissue is cleaned out. The cleaning is carried out with special files which also shape the root canal to make it easier to fill later on. The dentist will also irrigate the inside of the root canal to wash out any debris. Root treatment usually requires at least 2 appointments. In between visits, an antiseptic dressing and a temporary filling will be placed in the tooth. On subsequent visits, if the tooth is free of pain and

swelling, the root canal can be filled and the tooth restored. Unfortunately root treatment is not always successful. Irrespective of how careful the dentist is, success cannot be guaranteed. The failure rate is typically around 10-15%. Failure of root treatment usually results from recurrence of infection, or because the infection has not been cleared in the first place. Either way it frequently leads to extraction. A further complication of root treatment is that teeth will often darken after the procedure. This can be a significant cosmetic issue with front teeth. In addition, root filled teeth can become more brittle over time. This is due to the fact that the process removes the internal blood supply of the tooth, causing the dentine to dry out. As a consequence of this, root filled teeth are more susceptible to fracture in the longer term. Both the cosmetic and structural complications often lead to root treated teeth requiring further treatment. Not uncommonly, it is necessary to place a crown on the tooth after root treatment. However, because of the risk of failure of root treatment, it is prudent to wait before placing any crown. Opinion varies on how long one should wait to assess the success of root treatment, but 3-6 months is typical. Given all of the associated risks and complications one might well ask, why do root treatment in the first place? Well, quite simply, if a tooth requires root treatment the only other alternative is extraction. Ultimately, preserving the natural tooth is the best thing to do if at all possible. Not necessarily an easy path, but certainly the one any dentist would choose for their own tooth if they were in that position.

Transition Year Mini Company

T

he Student Enterprise awards is a wonderful opportunity for Transition Year students to test their abilities in running a business. It gives them a chance to learn how to operate in a group. It also teaches them valuable skills, such as leadership and communication skills and gives them an insight into the world of business and marketing. One mini company in particular, from St. Joseph’s Secondary School Foxford, saw this opportunity as a chance to raise awareness

on an issue that is very topical for Irish people. Their group is called ‘Farm Focus’ and they created their company in the hope that they would bring attention to the amount of accidents that occur on Irish farms each year, particularly those involving children. They felt as though there was not enough emphasis being put on educating children of the dangers associated with farming and how to act in a situation they could find themselves in on a farm. In response to the child fatalities occurring on Irish farms, the group created a colouring story book based on farm safety. Their long-term aim is to educate the children on the dangers of the farm, while interacting with them through colouring and reading. The book entails the story of a boy called Danny, who guides the children around his family farm and informs them on the dangers that he may be faced with. He also instructs them on how to deal with these situations in the safest way possible. He also conveys to the children other safer alternatives of how they can help on the farm, while remaining safe. The group also attended the North Mayo Regional Final of the Student Enterprise Awards and will now represent their school as they go forward to the County Final. They hope that they achieve their goal in promoting and selling their product on a national level. Farm Focus colouring books available for purchase on DoneDeal and in the Foxford Pharmacy and Post Office. Home Energy Tips That Save You Money efficient and "G" being the worst guzzler for energy. Tumble Driers Tumble driers are energy guzzlers so try to use washing lines or airers. Don't put very wet clothing into the dryer, make sure you wring clothing out or spin dry again to help use less energy. Fridges/Freezers These are the most hardworking appliances in the home. Avoid putting Warm or Hot Foods in the fridge, let them cool down first. Don't leave the Fridge or Freezer door open, this means the fridge uses more energy to cool itself back down due to the cool air lost opening the door. Switching Energy Supplier In the current rising trend of energy prices it could well be worth shopping around to save money on your energy bills, further discounts are available if you switch both gas & electricity to the same supplier. It is a simple process and there is no disruption to your existing energy supply.

E

nergy is vital to nearly all aspects of our daily lives - but we rarely stop to think about how or why we use it. As the price of energy continues to rise, now is the ideal time to consider what you can do to be more energy efficient. The good news is that there are many simple ways to use energy more efficiently that will save money and benefit the environment. Hot Water Of course it should be hot, but it doesn't need to be scalding. For most people, setting the cylinder thermostat at 60°C/140°F is fine for bathing and washing. This can save up to €15 per year. Light bulbs If you use a particular light for an average of four hours or more a day, then replace it with an energy-saving equivalent - which will use around a quarter of the electricity and last up to 12 times longer. Each energy efficient bulb fitted could give you an estimated saving of €10.50 off your energy bill per year. Kettles Heat the amount of water you really need and if you're using an electric kettle, make

sure you cover the elements. More modern kettles have no visible element so you use less water, you could also try to fill a cup and use it as a guide to fill the kettle, so that you boil the right amount of water. Curtains At night, pull the curtains to stop heat being lost through the windows. Take care not to drape curtains over radiators as this will funnel heat straight out of the windows. Heating Turning the thermostat down by just 1°C can cut as much as 10% off your heating bills. You can also save on running costs by heating your home for an hour less each day. Television, Hi-Fi and Computers Switch off your TV, video and Hi-Fi at the set. Standby can use as much as 10%-60%of the electricity that would be used by the device if it was switched on. Also don't forget to turn your Computer monitor off, as it too wastes electricity if left on. Appliances When purchasing kitchen appliances such as fridges, freezers, dishwashers and washing

Five reasons most diets fail W

e’ve all been there. Desperately wanting to lose those few extra pounds, or in some cases a lot of extra pounds, but no matter which diet we try we always seem to end up where we started from. It’s frustrating and demoralizing and it tastes like failure. But it doesn’t have to be this way, says Dr. Yoni Freedhoff, an American based obesity expert and the author of The Diet Fix: Why Diets Fail and How to Make Yours Work. “If there was a quick fix we’d all be skinny,” he points out. “The more permanent the weight loss needs to be the more permanent the lifestyle changes need to be.” So what’s preventing us from getting there?

1. We think dieting has to be painful

2.We under-eat

“The past 60 to 80 years of modern day dieting has been predicated upon the notion that dieting success is about suffering,” says Dr. Freedhoff. “It suggests that people struggling with their weight don’t deserve to eat like normal people or use food for comfort and celebration. Instead they’re only supposed to use food for fuel and shut off the other normal uses. This doesn’t work.”

Trying to starve yourself into thinness doesn’t work either. “Hunger is a very powerful physiological force,” says the diet doctor. “It’s second only to breathing for survival. To think we can fight 100 million years of evolution which has made our bodies really good at securing calories simply because we want to get into a particular clothing size is folly.”

3. We over-exercise

Mon-Thu 9.00 - 6.00pm Fri 9.00 - 5pm Home and hospital visits catered for Garden/Tone St, Ballina Tel: 096-72189 087-6389500 email: begley.john2@gmail.com

4.We eat out too often and consume too much processed food

“People undertake exercise regimes that are truly ‘regimes’,” he says. “People see these shows on TV where they suggest that exercise to the point of throwing up is desirable. Again, that is not a lifestyle – it’s a life sentence.” People also tend to overestimate the number of calories they’re burning, which can lead to frustration. “As a consequence, exercised-based approaches to weight management tend to get disappointing quite quickly,” he says. “That’s why gyms are busy in January and empty in March.”

5. We don’t think about the calories we’re drinking “People are usually aware that sugarsweetened beverages can be problematic but they don’t always think about the cream and sugar in their coffee,” he says. “And people really don’t like to think about alcohol because they enjoy it so much, but red wine has double the calories of Coca Cola and that’s something you can’t ignore if you’re trying to lose weight.”Best advice he can offer? “Weight management, in general, needs to be about people striving to live the healthiest lives they can enjoy — and not the healthiest lives they can tolerate. They need to make lifestyle changes, that are significant and enjoyable, but not severe. And that can be challenging when you’ve got a society telling you they need to be severe to work.”

“We’ve been duped by the food industry and our own willingness to believe you can find health and weight loss in restaurants or boxes, but it doesn’t work that way,” he says. “We, as a society, seem to be using restaurants and processed foods like our grandparents used refrigerators and the produce drawers.” Dr. Freedhoff says he sees far more people who eat out three to four times a week than he does people who eat out three to four times a month. That equates to weight loss woes. “The calories we consume in restaurants are non-intuitive and astronomical in many cases. That salad you order might have more calories than a person burns in an entire day.”

Canaries

Darrell Scott Sun 12 March 2017, 8pm €15/7.50 u18s. The Hawkswell Theatre Singer-songwriter Darrell Scott will appear at the Hawk’s Well Theatre with music from his latest album, Couchville Sessions, an emotionally charged collection of songs that continue Scott’s long tradition of tackling the profound issues— loneliness, the demise of relationships, mortality—while still maintaining a lightness and sense of hope. Born in Eastern Kentucky to restless Appalachians who moved him Out West, raised by a country-music-worshipping single father, he studied poetry with Philip Levine, a celebrator of the working class who would later become the nation’s Poet Laureate. Scott has lived the songs he sings: he’s worked hard, told defiant truths, and never turned down the chance to pursue love. Along the way he has created an

oeuvre of albums beloved by his devoted fans and written songs that became hits for everyone from Dixie Chicks to Travis Tritt as well as being covered by more than 70 others while never shying away from critiquing the industry. The multi-talented Grammy nominee has also been a member of Robert Plant’s Band of Joy, won the AMA Song of the Year, named ASCAP’s Songwriter of the Year and a host of other accolades.

by Bernard Farrell / Sat 25 Mar, 8pm €15/12conc. This is arguably Farrell's funniest play, with some Irish couples travelling to the Canaries on a package holiday in a bid to escape their surroundings. Everybody arrives in the happiest of colours and the best of form, however, things soon start going wrong as the weather is not what was expected, the people are not what were expected and indeed the whole experience descends into total farce. The cast features a married couple, 'Marie', played by Fiona Kuehl, and her husband 'Tommy' played by Denis Daly, who head off on holidays together with Marie's dad, 'Da', who is played by Padraig Cullen.

Mick Flannery @ THE HAWKSWELL THEATRE Fri 24 March, 8pm / €22/11 u18s / The Hawkswell Mick Flannery is back on the road performing new material from his new album ‘I Own You’ which features some of Mick’s finest work to date . Following the release of his number one album ‘By The Rule’ in 2014, Mick took a short break and began writing again in 2015. Basing himself between the counties of Cork and Clare, Mick was moved and motivated by current events around the world, specifically one tragic event in April 2015 that inspired the title track. Speaking very directly about the single, Mick states; "The song I

Own You" is based on the idea of the "poor man" breaking into the "rich man's" house. It was inspired by wealth inequality in capitalist societies. It was also informed by the Baltimore riots, after the killing of Freddie Gray by police. I hoped the song would portray the anger felt by disenfranchised, powerless people. The video is intended to send the message that the greed of the super-rich must at some stage be reckoned with". This album is a step away from previous releases, something Mick differentiates between his own albums. ‘50% of this album is more socially aware, containing social commentary stuff, and is ultimately less self-involved than

Best view can be had from Ridgepool Rd or The Canal Side Car Park, located close to the Arts Centre.

my previous releases. It may also sound slightly different; I was listening to a lot of Kendrick Lamar, and for a long time it was just Christian [producer] and I in the studio – him on drums and me warbling – so the beat became more important than any guitar or piano parts, more hip-hop based, the reason it sounds a little bit more modern’.

Moll in Arts Centre

Parke Drama and Arts Group perform John B Keane’s Moll on Thursday 23rd March, 8pm Moll is a comedy set in a rural presbytery in Kerry where the newly appointed priest’s housekeeper takes over a parish house with a “divide and conquer” strategy. When Canon Pratt and his two curates, Father Brest and Father Loran, lose their esteemed Ms Bottomly, they must recruit a replacement to carry on with the cooking and cleaning. They select Ms Maureen Kettle, Moll. She wraps the Canon around her little finger, feeds him well while starving the curates and continues this pattern as the Canon is promoted and one of the curates takes his place. There is much more, of course, as Moll is an unstoppable force. Tickets: €10 Early booking advised.
