HEARTBURN AFFECTS AT LEAST HAS WORSENED FOR MANY 1 IN 3 ADULTS DURING PANDEMIC A
t least one-third of Irish adults experience heartburn and many of these have seen a worsening of the condition during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new survey has found. According to the findings, 34% of people get heartburn, with 29% of these experiencing symptoms more than twice a week. Some 20% of those affected say the condition has worsened during the pandemic. Heartburn occurs when gastric acid passes from the stomach back up into the oesophagus (food pipe) because the lower oesophageal sphincter has not closed tightly enough. One of the main irritants in gastric acid is hydrochloric acid, which is a strong acid. The stomach has a special lining that prevents this acid from damaging it but the oesophagus has no such lining. Therefore when the gastric acid flows back into the oesophagus, the lining of it becomes inflamed due to the burning effect of the hydrochloric acid. Typical symptoms of heartburn include a burning feeling behind the breastbone and an acidic taste in the mouth. According to this latest survey, the biggest triggers are eating rich or spicy foods, eating too much and stress. Among those who say that their heartburn has worsened during the pandemic, the main reasons for this include COVID-related stress, increased snacking and work-related

The aim of this campaign is to increase awareness of the symptoms and triggers of the condition and to encourage those living with it to ask their pharmacist for advice. Over 1M fake medicines detained in 2019

ver one million units of fake and other illegal medicines were detained by the Health Products and Regulatory Authority (HPRA) last year. According to the HPRA's Annual Report 2019, a total of 1,018,678 dosage units of fake and illegal medicines were detained, compared to 619,213 in 2018. The most common fake or illegal products were sedatives, which accounted for 34% of all detained products. These were followed by erectile dysfunction medicines (28%) and anabolic steroids (12%). "Working with our partners in An Garda Síochána and Revenue's Customs Service, we detained over one million dosage units of fake and illegal medicines coming into Ireland. We continue to urge members of the public not to use unverified and unregulated sources to buy prescriptiononly and illegal medicines, including over the internet," commented HPRA chief executive, Dr Lorraine Nolan. The report noted that eight prosecutions were initiated in 2019 relating to the unauthorised supply of prescription medicines, including falsified anabolic steroids and erectile dysfunction products. Meanwhile, the report also revealed that the HPRA received reports of 9,253 adverse reactions in relation to human medicines. "Significant levels of reporting are particularly welcome, and we encourage healthcare professionals and the general public to report suspected side-effects and any safety and quality concerns via our website using the online report forms. During 2019, the HPRA authorised 295 new human medicines for the Irish market through the national, mutual recognition and decentralised procedures. A further 138 medicines were authorised through the centralised route, which is co-ordinated by the European Medicines Agency. The authority also recalled 125 human medicines during the year. It also gave approval for 88 clinical trials

"Working closely with the Department of Health, the HSE and stakeholders from right across the health sector, including manufacturers and distributors, we have and will continue to focus on ensuring minimum disruption to the supply and availability of medicines and medical devices for Irish patients," she added.

Independent Deputy Marian Harkin A Sligo/Leitrim TD says the future is ‘extremely grim’ for some marts and for farmers who are selling stock during the current Covid restrictions, and especially in areas of poor broadband coverage. Independent Deputy Marian Harkin says she has written to the Minister for Agriculture and Donegal TD Charlie McConalogue, the Taoiseach, Tanaiste and leader of the Green Party outlining, what she says is, the hugely significant challenges that will be faced by buyers, sellers and the marts. She also says some farmers are not at ease with the technology needed to participate in online sales. She added that this all happening at the busiest time of the year for many marts, when the weanling trade is swinging into action with calves being sold onto finishers from outside the region.

He encouraged people with heartburn to try to figure out what their triggers are and speak to their pharmacist for advice. "We've all made a lot of sacrifices over the past number of months, and the uncertainty that we are all experiencing is only adding to daily stresses, increasing heartburn episodes for some. "In spite of what's going on around us, it's time to try to enjoy the little pleasures in life again, order a takeaway with the family or enjoy your morning coffee without worrying about heartburn," he said. Simple lifestyle changes like altering your diet, quitting smoking and exercising regularly can make a difference, but for those looking to control more frequent attacks, it is recommended that a pharmacist is consulted. Heartburn Awareness Week is supported by GSK. The survey was carried out by iReach in the last week of September and involved 1,000 adults nationwide.

Mayo school honoured for water conservation efforts
Northwest Express October, 2020
G
reen-Schools moved its annual Water Awards ceremony online today, with a virtual ceremony shown on screens in 24 schools around the country. Postponed in May due to COVID-19 restrictions, the ceremony celebrates the winners of the annual Water School of the Year Awards; Water poster competition and Water Ambassador Programme. The Green-Schools Water theme is supported by Irish Water. Gaelscoil Uí Drisceoil in Glanmire, Cork and Dominican College, Galway City were named Ireland’s Water Schools of the Year (primary and secondary) today. A Mayo Primary School was also awarded today, as the regional winner of the School of the Year for the Northern and Western Region. St Joseph’s NS, Bonniconlon impressed with their great committee structure, which is inclusive of almost all class groups in the school. They also repaired taps, used timers, reduced flush capacity and did simple things like putting basins in sinks. Their ‘Tap Wardens’ ensured taps were fully turned off at break times and the school went on numerous educational trips associated with water. Their actions lead to an impressive reduction in water use per person per day from 10.1l to 5.8l! The Green-Schools programme has moved much of its interaction online for the current school year, having developed a
suite of Green-Schools Stay Home resources since March, including 13 weeks of activities related to the Water theme. This is the seventh year of the awards and partnership with Irish Water, which has seen over 2,000 schools attend interactive Water Workshops and Walk for Water
Events since 2013. Following the awards today, Ger Greally of Irish Water, said: “A key part of Irish Water’s role in safeguarding Ireland’s water supplies is helping the next generation understand the importance of conserving water.

Aluminium Soffit & Fascia Covering Mayo & West Sligo Ballina Councillors have totally rejected the lowest allocation ever proposed under GMA funding for their area. The issue was discussed at the recent monthly meeting of the authority, where Crossmolina-based FF Councillor Michael Loftus physically ripped up the proposal. The Ballina Municipal District has been allocated a sum of 330,000 for 2021. It is the smallest allocation of the four Municipal District areas in Mayo. The GMA is the General Municipal Allocation and is funding that is provided annually for voluntary and community groups and is totally at the discretion of elected councillors.
Mayo and Sligo are to be two of the four locations nationally for new Memory Assessment Units, for the early detection of alzheimers and dementia. It follows yesterday’s Budget in which almost 13 million euro was announced for dementia services nationally. Mayo Fianna Fail Senator Lisa Chambers told local news that at present there is only one location nationally, St James Hospital in Dublin that has such a facility. The spread of the new Memory Units across the regions, will enable the earlier detection of dementia and Semator Chambers said that’s vital in treating the disease. The exact location of the units have not yet been finalised within each county, but it’s expected they will be operational by 2022.

I had a test with another provider about six months prior who recommended hearing aids costing €4,200 as it turned would not have benefited me in any way. I was keen to have a second opinion as to the cause of severe hearing loss on one side and wanted to be sure it wasn’t just age related - I’m in my 60’s. Mrs. Ann Marie Kelly’s knowledge and expertise identified a possible serious medical condition and strongly suggested referral to ENT specialist, who in turn referred me to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where I’m having on-going care. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kelly calm patient manner and her ability to explain everything without being alarmist. Definitely shows an interest and dedication in her work not seen everyday” - AC, Mayo

hen producer Niamh Fagan brought director Tom Sullivan and BAFTA winning writer Kevin Toolis together to explore the notion of life and death in the time of Covid, Is Olc an Ghaoth was born. Is Olc an Ghaoth is an Achill Island Gothic Triptych - three sad-funny short films that fold into each other, set on a slightly offkilter, quirky Covid-bound Island. Kevin Toolis, known for his bestselling book, 'My Father's Wake - How the Irish Teach Us to Live, Love and Die' wrote the three screenplays which were brought to life by multi-award-winning director Tom Sullivan (Arracht, Fir Bolg,). "There's a pathos in the quiet, observational style of Kevin's writing and a gentle, dark humour,
it’s why I loved the scripts, that and the setting. There is something almost otherworldly about the West of Ireland particularly in places like Achill, it’s what we set out to capture.'" said Tom Sullivan. He added, "I've always been attracted to the kind of defiant stoicism you see in rural Ireland - those who didn't get the fancy education, who didn't 'do well' in Cleveland or Chicago. The story is about those people that kept the, albeit at times smouldering, flame alight.” Is Olc an Ghaoth features some of the finest actors in the country, Stiofán Seoige (Murdair Mhám Trasna, Na Cloigne, Ros na Rún), John Finn (Cold Case, The Waking Dead, The Crown, An Bronntanas), Carrie Crowley (Fair City, Rásaí na Gaillimhe) and Peadar Cox (Song of Granite, Fir Bolg, Ros na
Rún).Whatever about Life and Death in the Time of Covid, filming during Covid-Time was a very real challenge. Producer Niamh Fagan (Shooting the Mafia, Rásaí na Gaillimhe) commented, "Shooting on location is challenging at the best of times, doing so under Covid Rules is doubly so. TG4 were really supportive. They trusted us to take the Covid issue seriously and let us get on with the job in hand. We had a great team who all worked together to comply with the additional restrictions and rules. We were a lean, mean shooting machine - we were on location, shot, in the can and home before the virus even knew we had been there". Is Olc an Ghaoth is on TG4 on Sunday the 1st November, Lá Na Marbh, at 10.30pm Film #1 Ceithre Chéad Meacháin (400cwt /400 weight) When their dead brother Máirtín comes home from America in an enormous bronze casket during the COVID pandemic two estranged brothers Padraig and Eamonn struggle over what to do for his wake.
Film #2 I bhFlaithis Dé (God's Own Pocket) Mourning his dead brother, and in desperate search of a pint in the COVID lockdown, Padraig gets more than he bargained for from the local pub landlady Síle and her lost dreams of Dallas.

eamus O’Rourke is an award winning writer, director and actor from Carrigallen in Leitrim.
He has a vast collection of short stories, sketches and recitations that have earned him close to a million hits on Youtube and social media. Check out the latest sketch for Cavan Cola. With performances of his own self-penned shows he has taken the Leitrim wit and gifted it to a wider audience. His first book, A Lock of Poems Recitations and Good Ones was thoroughly enjoyable and it was waiting for the follow up, which has duly made it’s appearance. With the theatre circuit coming to a close for the summer session Seamus had plans for another book and with parts existing he decided that it was time to piece them together and thus Standing in Gaps was created. Seamus explained, ‘ I grew up in Leitrim in the ‘60’s. Nothing happened. This book is all about growing up on a small farm where nothing happened, except work and hay…and the bog ..and granny and a big American washing machine. “We hadn’t a clue until we got the telly and then all we wanted was to be like Dallas!”. “It’s not an angry book. There’s no slander or shame- just a bunch of mad country people trying to make all the ends meet. It’s a reminder that fun and laughter are never far away as long as you’ve the makings of a family and a community of misfits and oddities, and somewhere to empty the pots.” Standing in Gaps is a book that anyone who grew up in rural Ireland will identify with and relate to life in a rural village, the GAA and of course the experience of standing in gaps. This book will make an ideal gift for friends and family and they don’t have to be from Leitrim. For more details on Minding the Gap and the link to purchase the book check out Seamusorourke.com.

Sligo School Honoured at Annual Young Social Innovators Awards A Sligo school was today honoured at the Young Social Innovators (YSI) Awards for its positive impact in helping to create a more equal, fair and sustainable world. Picking up one of only three Spotlight Awards available, the team from Ursuline College, Finisklin, Co. Sligo, won the Global Citizens Award for its ‘Call The Fashion Police’ project. The Spotlight Awards recognise excellence in the areas of social media, citizenship, and advocacy and fundraising, and the Global Citizens Award category, supported by WorldWise Global Schools, specifically recognises projects that promote global solidarity. The Ursuline College project team were passionate about combatting fast fashion which they saw as not only harmful for the environment, but also for those employed in the supply and production of our clothing. The students’ teacher Nathalie Reilly also received a Let Them Shine Award for her five-year involvement in the YSI programme. These awards recognise the dedication and commitment of the inspirational and supportive teachers that facilitate YSI programmes with students over a prolonged period of time, and Nathalie is a very worthy recipient. YSI focuses on empowering Ireland’s young people to reimagine the world and the communities they live in, by collaborating with their peers to produce ideas and projects that help propagate a fairer, more equal and sustainable world. This year’s YSI programme saw participation
from 6,400 Irish teenagers and the development of 411 innovation projects. Young Social Innovators co-founder and CEO, Rachel Collier, said, “Today’s awards, and the inspirational projects developed and worked on throughout the year-long programme, exemplify how Ireland’s young people are contributing to the improvement of society at large and contributing solutions to issues impacting people, communities and the environment. 2019/20 was a particularly challenging year for schools, teachers and students. Social innovation education is more important than ever as we face new and emerging social challenges and young people have demonstrated that they can be part of the solution. I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to today’s winners, along with each and every student who took part in projects throughout the year.” Addressing the awards participants and winners, President of Ireland and Young Social Innovators Patron, Michael D. Higgins, wrote, “I believe passionately that young people can be the powerful catalysts for social change when given the opportunity and support, such as that which we showcase today at Young Social Innovators. As young people, you have the energy, ideas and creativity that are all required to make your communities and the wider society in which you live, both at home and globally more fair, equal and just. “I want to say how inspired I am by your endeavours. I am impressed to see wideranging issues such as domestic violence,
mental health, sustainability, inclusion and many more important topics being addressed by the young people of Ireland. You are the future, but we need you to help shape the future that you will inherit. The future is not something provided to you, but something you create. Young Social Innovators gives you an opportunity to do that.”
About Young Social Innovators (YSI): Young Social Innovators is a non-profit organisation that believes in the power of youth. Through its programmes, training and events, Young Social Innovators enables young people to grapple with difficult social issues, advocating reform and advancing change. Each year, circa 15,000 young people are supported to explore social issues that concern them and come up with a variety of responses to these. In this way, Young Social Innovators builds social capital and helps young people create a fairer and more caring Ireland. YSI is supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development, the Department of Education and Skills, The Tomar Trust, the Health Service Executive, the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Pobal, The Dormant Accounts Fund, Virgin Media, Irish Aid’s WorldWise Global Schools, as well as the Crisis Pregnancy Programme. Further support is received from Google, Dublin City Council, Cork City Council, AbbVie Ltd, and the Smurfit Foundation.

Keeping Ireland’s Christmas spend local will be vital for the survival of SMEs
S
Consumers urged to support local business when shopping online during Level 5 ME Recovery Ireland are encouraging Irish consumers to support local business when purchasing online over the coming weeks. The groups call comes as the country enters day one of nationwide Level 5 restrictions, which is set to leave Ireland’s SME sector in a precarious position over the next six weeks. Commenting, chair of SME Recovery Ireland, John Moran said: “Once again we need to ensure local shops are prioritised when making purchasing decisions. Today’s Level 5 restrictions are yet another crushing blow to Ireland’s decimated SME sector. Businesses across the country are forced to close their doors for a second time, wondering how and when they will be able to reopen fully. “After the initial lockdown, we witnessed first-hand the emotional, physical and financial efforts from business owners to reopen and operate safely while the country continued to supress Covid-19. The sad reality of this second closure, not of their own making, is that many of those businesses may never reopen. “But we can each play our part to help. The Government has reminded us of the important role we play in containing the spread of Covid-19 by restricting our movements. In the same manner, we want to remind
the public today that by choosing to shop local, they can help to ensure the survival of small businesses. It makes a big difference each time we give preference to those that remain operational during this difficult period or even those closed but who can offer vouchers for Christmas and beyond.” In relation to consumers online spending in the run up to Christmas, Mr Moran said: “70 per cent of Irish consumers’ online spending goes to international multinationals. That is valuable cash leaving the country at a time when we need it most to work in our economy. With simple choices, Irish consumers can reverse this trend. The run up to Christmas is the perfect opportunity for to gift back to our local shops by choosing them instead of the large multinational retailers. “Even businesses with limited online retailing, can be reached via email, social media or by phone to see how purchases can be arranged. Each purchase we make may seem small to us but collectively if we all change our habits this year, we can make a huge positive impact. This will go a long way in determining how many of our local businesses stay open, keeping our friends and family employed, and are able to recover to continue to serve our communities. “One small purchase can start a
positive reaction like a small pebble in a big pond. Saving our local shop also helps other Irish businesses in the same supply chain. Behind every business are the families of the owner and their employees. We save Christmas for those families too.” SME Recovery Ireland welcomed several supports announced in last
week’s Budget especially those aimed at supporting small businesses through the Level 5 restrictions. Referring to the measures including the Covid Restrictions Support Scheme (CRSS) and the extension of the Emergency Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS), Mr Moran added: “We strongly encourage businesses that have
been forced to temporarily close today or whose trade will significantly drop as a result of the new restrictions, to make full use of the supports available to them. But we urge the Government to monitor the situation closely and add more firepower to the measures if needed to ensure the survival of the SME sector.”

The call to recognise the potential left in electronic products comes from WEEE Ireland as International E-Waste Day reveals that the raw material value of global e-waste in 2019 was worth approximately €50.8bn, the equivalent value of 2.9 million electric cars. Electronic waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the world. It is estimated that a new high of 53.6 million tonnes of e-waste were generated across the planet in 2019. E-waste is projected to reach an incredible 75 million tonnes by 2030, which is 9 kg for every person in the
world. International E-Waste Day is organised by the WEEE Forum, an international association speaking for 40 not-forprofit e-waste producer compliance schemes, including WEEE Ireland whose annual conference ‘Financing the Future, the WEEE Circular Economy’ will also take place virtually today to coincide with International E-Waste Day. “It is, essentially, about loving our electronic items for longer," said Leo Donovan, Chief Executive of WEEE Ireland. “Before putting an electronic item to recycling we would ask people to consider if it can be repaired or if someone else might find a use for it. “Research shows that 81% of all requests for product repair results in
successful fixes, extending the product life. Every house has an average of 72 electrical products, 11 of which are broken or not being used anymore. “We are making the request in support of a transition towards a zero carbon more circular economy, which aims to keep our resources in circulation for longer, reducing waste and easing demand for new raw materials used to manufacture new electronic goods. “If we really want to progress to a circular economy in Ireland, we need to look further up the waste hierarchy and that may mean including more criteria such as durability and repairability in the information provided to customers. "Through a variety of methods we should look at keeping suitable products in use for as long as possible, either by the original user, flowing to new owners or utilising repair services.” WEEE Ireland was the second-best performing recycling scheme in Europe in 2019, with 38,594 tonnes of waste electrical items and the equivalent of over 44 million used AA portable batteries collected. A new national record of 10.89kg of ewaste was recycled per head of population last year by WEEE Ireland, on behalf of over 1,114 members and partners – a rise of 6.2% on 2018. Alongside International E-waste Day, International Repair Day takes place this Saturday, October 17 to encourage people to reduce the amount of goods discarded of every year and use authorised repair engineers for quality and safe repair of home electrical equipment. By visiting RepairMyStuff.ie consumers can access an online directory of repair professionals nationwide. As well as discussing initiatives to encourage consumers to prolong the use of their electronics today’s WEEE Ireland conference highlights the future requirement for eco-modulation. This is a possible future economic instrument to put the circular economy in practice by providing a financial incentive to companies to redesign products to reduce their environmental impacts.
DojoMór2020 takes place virtually on October 24th GMIT is delighted to be a partner in hosting DojoMór2020, an exciting and fun online coding event for young people aged 7 to 17, where in one day (Saturday 24 October 2020), right across Ireland, they learn to create a simple game, build a website, and programme some electronics. This a free event; interested participants can register for one or more workshops at www.dojomor.ie DojoMór2020 will involve multiple local classroom workshops being streamed live to attendees from around the country from staff in colleges such as GMIT, CIT, IT Tralee, Waterford IT, Maynooth University, Dundalk IT, Letterkenny IT, Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology, as well as from Offaly County Council. The event is funded by the Higher Education Authority (HEA). Dr Seán Duignan, Head of Department
of Computer Science & Applied Physics at GMIT, says the nationwide event will give children and teenagers the opportunity to experience programming first-hand, and in a fun and creative way. “We hope that this event will help guide a new generation of learners and will help them on their journey to becoming confident problem solvers. Regardless of college or career choice later on, computational thinking is a key literacy that all should endeavour to learn. DojoMór2020 will help kick-start that journey for thousands of children. Curiosity is all that is required for this event; no experience of coding or computers necessary!” Organisers expect some 10,000 young people, aged 7 to 17, from around Ireland to join the locally hosted live online sessions. DojoMór2020 will present young people with opportunities
to learn practical and valuable skills, some of which they will develop into an exciting career in coding and programming anything from self-driving cars and state-of-the art aeronautics to machine-learning robotics and software application development. The career options are abundant. The online workshops will take place at 10am, 11am, 12pm and 1pm. Leading technologies will be used including Micro:bits, Vex Robotics, Scratch, Thunkable, HTML, Lightbot, Blender and Soundtrap. Bus Éireann and Expressway issue Level 5 travel advice for all services nationwide Capacity on public transport will be limited to 25%
B
us Éireann, Ireland’s national bus company, is advising customers of updated guidelines under Level 5 of Ireland’s Plan for Living with Covid-19 which will come into effect from midnight tomorrow, Wednesday, 21 October 2020. Under Level 5 restrictions Bus Éireann and Expressway services will operate at a capacity of 25% and Government advice for Level 5 restrictions is that public transport should be avoided. All travel should be limited within a 5km radius, unless the travel is essential that is for work (when not possible from home), education and other essential purposes. Capacity is now limited to 1 in 4 seats and passengers are advised that these seats should be reserved for essential workers, to observe capacity signage on board vehicles and continue the mandatory wearing of face coverings on all services. Importantly, passengers are advised under no circumstance to use public transport if they are experiencing any Covid-19 related symptoms, nor should public transport be used to travel to or from a Covid-19 testing centre. “Customers will see the capacity limit of each vehicle clearly marked on the door,” said Allen Parker, Bus Éireann Chief Customer Officer. “We are working hard to try to provide transport for essential journeys and frontline workers, as we have done throughout the pandemic. Whilst capacity onboard is now limited to 25% ,there will be no change to our timetables at this time.” “Bus Éireann would like to thank our customers for their high compliance rate with all Covid-19 restrictions on board our services to date,” continued Mr Parker. “We are aware that increased restrictions can be frustrating
for our passengers and we would like to take this opportunity to ask for their continued understanding and respect for all our frontline employees, including our drivers and supervisors. We will continue to work tirelessly to deliver essential public transport services to those who need to travel and look forward to the continued support of our
customers as we all work together to stop the spread of Covid-19.” Bus Éireann fully adheres to all public health guidelines and is committed to ensuring the continued safety and well-being of its employees and customers observing many precautionary measures including; the mandatory wearing of face coverings, vehicle
deep cleaning, touchpoint cleaning throughout the day and protective screens and personal protective equipment for drivers. Bus Éireann encourages customers to use Leap Cards, Automatic Ticket Machines and online ticket purchase to minimise the use of cash. Tickets can be purchased at www.buseireann.ie

Avant Money Celebrates Ibec KeepWell Mark
C
Commitment to employee health and wellbeing recognised for second time
o. Leitrim services company Avant Money, which recently entered the Irish mortgage based financial market, has been accredited with the Ibec KeepWell mark for the second time. The company which specialises in mortgages, credit cards and loans and has offices in Carrick-on- Shannon and Dublin, has been singled out for its commitment to improving the lifestyles and wellbeing of its workforce of over 250 people. This commitment has been more important than ever in the face of the changes brought about by the Covid19 pandemic and is being celebrated at the company, as part of World Mental Health Day on Saturday October 10. Since becoming the first financial services company to achieve the accreditation in 2018, Avant Money has introduced further policies and initiatives to benefit employee wellbeing. In August, Avant Money was honoured again to become the first firm in the country to go through Ibec’s re-accreditation process. This year more than ever, it was vital for Avant Money to focus on the health and wellbeing of its colleagues. In a matter of just two weeks, the organisation moved from an entirely office-based company with 250+ employees, to one operating virtually across 250 locations nationwide. Staff health and wellness policies introduced since 2018 were adapted to
Covid-19 guidelines and included a weekly HR-led manager wellness and support forum for managers to connect and share advice and concerns about leading teams during the pandemic. The company also established a space for weekly one-to-one manager wellness calls with team members. The HR team rolled out an online survey to check if homeworking spaces were suitable and to ensure that everyone had the resources they needed to work safely and comfortably. Avant Money also worked with colleagues individually to deal with personal issues such as childcare challenges, offering flexible working arrangements where needed. Helen Richardson, Head of Human Resources, Avant Money, said “It is a testament to our team that Avant Money has expanded and continues to flourish, particularly in this year, which, with the onset of Covid-19, has been testing for everyone. For me, a programme focused on the wellbeing of staff is vital, and so the achievement of being re-accredited by Ibec with the KeepWell Mark is warmly welcomed. Wellness is at the core of everything we do at Avant Money and that is why we are pleased to hold ourselves to the highest standards and to have our success as a good employer recognised by Ibec.” Sophie Moran, Programme Manager of The KeepWell Mark in Ibec, said “We’re delighted to award Avant Money

with their second successive KeepWell Mark accreditation. The strides they have made in supporting the health and wellbeing of their employees is to be highly commended, and we hope their commitment and efforts will inspire many other organisations to approach wellbeing as a strategic priority both now and in the future.”

T he North Mayo Heritage Centre is delighted to announce today that Santa will be attending the Crossmolina Christmas Market 2020 at The North Mayo Heritage Centre, Enniscoe. Given all the current restrictions due to the COVID 19 Pandemic, considerable advance planning has gone into ensuring that the Santa experience will be as safe as possible and will be going ahead as planned this year. Due to restricted numbers allowed on site The Crossmolina Christmas Market will take place over two weekends on December 12th and 13th as well as 19th & 20th. A whole new Santa experience has been planned which is now under construction ‘We’re all very excited about the arrival of Santa this year’ said Hugh Trayer, Manager of The North Mayo Heritage Centre. ‘We have put a huge amount of thought and resources to make sure that we are fully compliant with all COVID guidelines and that we create a safe bubble for our visitors to experience the joy of Christmas and the traditional visit to Santa’. Minister says Ireland West Airport Knock will benefit from Budget funding Ireland West Airport Knock, along with Donegal and Kerry airports, will benefit from over €21 million euro announced in the Budget for regional airports. That's according to Galway's Hildegarde Naughton, Minister of State with responsibility for international transport. While Ministers Paschal Donohue and Michael McGrath specifically announced funding for the State airports at Cork and Shannon, they did not refer to Knock in their Budget speeches. However, Minister Naughton said that she fully realises the importance of Ireland West Airport Knock to the region, and it will benefit from the regional airport funding allocated in the recent Budget....

I have been to The North Mayo Heritage Centre to make sure everything will be just fine. I have brought lots of hand sanitizers, masks and a special machine that sprays a very fine mist into the air to make the experience as safe as possible’. Tickets have been on sale from Tuesday 6th October and costs are €20 per child with adults free. There will be no charge to attend the Christmas Market. Each child who visits Santa will receive a quality toy, a certificate to confirm they are on the ‘good list’, some reindeer food as well as a small treat. Daily Habits That Help fight Off Viruses
Taking these steps every day can bolster your health and immune system Breakfast: Unsweetened bran cereal with berries Fiber is a nondigestible carbohydrate that feeds the good bacteria in your gut. And when the little buggers are happy, they help keep the immune system ready when needed. A half-cup of wheat bran has 12.5 grams of fiber, and by adding berries, you'll earn a few more. Plus, blueberries and other dark-colored berries are rich in flavonoids, antioxidants that
improve the health of macrophages and other virus-eating cells.
A brisk walk "Immune cells circulate the body during exercise and for two or three hours afterward,” says David Nieman, director of Appalachian State University's Human Performance Lab. Aim for 30 to 60 minutes of cycling, swimming, jogging or walking that's brisk enough to make you breathe hard.
Post-workout smoothie or salad At the start of the pandemic, Helen Messier, a family practitioner and immunologist, added a daily allplant smoothie to her diet that included a number of different

fruits and vegetables. You should, too. “Nutritionally, variety is the most important thing,” she says. “So I try to get in at least 10 servings of fruits and vegetables every day."
Start your relaxation routine Stress is a high-powered immune suppressant that floods your body with corticosteroids, the same class of compounds doctors prescribe to treat autoimmune diseases. “We use corticosteroids for lots of allergic diseases,” says Mark Ansel, professor of immunology and microbiology at the University of California, San Francisco. Think of steroid creams for itchy rashes or the corticosteroids in an asthma inhaler. They work by suppressing the immune system — not what you want if you're trying to quell an army of viral invaders. Consider taking up a mind-body activity such as yoga, tai chi or meditation. In one study, adults cut stress with eight weeks of mindfulness training and, as a result, they were 20 percent less likely to experience respiratory infection. If the zen arts aren't for you, then gardening, painting and other hands-on hobbies can also work. Visit friends — virtually or outdoors
Emerging research indicates that loneliness and social isolation can increase inflammation throughout your body. Experts aren't entirely sure how, but they do know that the effect appears to increase with age. If the weather's nice, consider scheduling a socially distanced walk in the park (with a mask on, of course). Otherwise, video chats on Zoom or Google Hangouts can fill the gap until sunnier days return. Dine with the fishes Omega-3 fatty acids — the kind found in oily fish like mackerel, fresh tuna, sardines and salmon — can measurably reduce levels of inflammation in older adults, according to a review from researchers in Italy. And animal studies indicate that dietary fish oil can increase the health and circulation of antibody-producing B cells. Begin a screen-free wind-down Sleep is critical for immune health. So in order to avoid difficulty falling asleep, turn off your phone, tablet and computer three hours before bedtime. “Those digital devices emit blue light, which suppresses the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin,” Messier says. Though you can use a blue-light blocker for your device, a book and a hot bath are excellent, and more natural, ways to prep for slumber.
