ealthcare professionals are joining forces to drive an end to weight stigma in recognition of patients who suffer with the disease of obesity and think their weight is their fault because of social stigmatisation. This can be compounded because some healthcare professionals don’t understand obesity as a disease and don’t treat it in the same way as all the other chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes or atherosclerotic heart disease. This stigma is preventing patients accessing care which can not only treat the obesity, but many of its complications such as type 2 diabetes. Ahead of World Obesity Day on Thursday 11 October, IrSPEN, the clinical nutrition group, is reminding people living with type 2 diabetes and obesity that they can dramatically improve their diabetes control or even reverse it if they can lose 15% of their body weight. This even applies to people who are on insulin and have poor diabetes control. Ireland has one of the highest obesity rates in Europe and it affects more than one million people here. One in four adults are obese and one in four children are overweight or obese making them highly likely to become obese adults. Every year in Ireland approximately 2,000 deaths are attributable to obesity. According to the WHO, 65% of the diabetes burden, 23% of the heart disease burden and between 7% and 41% of certain cancer burdens are attributable to overweight and obesity. The current cost of treating all obesity-related complications is approximately €1.16 billion per annum, 35% of this cost is allocated to hospital care and medication costs and 65% is from indirect costs including productivity losses from absenteeism. €300,000 announced for a new Scouts Den in Castlebar The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring has announced €300,000 in funding through the LEADER Programme for the construction of a new scout den in Castlebar. Minister Ring told Midwest News that this is fantastic news for Castlebar. The new scout den will benefit young people in the community for many years to come. He said scouting provides a great outlet and provides important life skills to young people. It also helps foster a love of our great outdoors and an appreciation, at an early age, of the benefits of working together. “With this investment, the Minister says, “Castlebar will have a top of the range scouting den which will allow the group to increase numbers and will include facilities for wheelchair access. This is a real coup for the town and is fantastic news for local parents and young people”.

Yellow rainfall warning remains in place for counties Mayo, Sligo and Donegal A yellow rainfall warning by Met Eireann for counties Mayo, Sligo and Donegal remains in place. While a storm brewing in the Atlantic at present could hit the country with gusts of up to 150kmh over the next couple of days. A yellow rainfall warning for Mayo, Sligo and Donegal is currently in place as a slow-moving band of rain continues to bring heavy showers, ranging from 25mm to 40mm. Galway City Council’s weather assessment

team met yesterday to assess the approaching storm. A spokesperson said Galway is experiencing a period of “very high astronomical spring tides”, which will last until Thursday. However, temperatures tomorrow are expected to reach up to 21C before the storm hits. Met Eireann says that the storm brewing on Thursday into Friday will bring strong to gale force southerly winds that could potentially give some damaging gusts, especially in the west.

It was amazing family day out with free use all of the rides, slides, boats and trains of the Pirate Adventure Park, entry to the stunning historic Westport House and the zip wire ride, live music and entertainment – all for absolutely free. The Westport House Annual Open Day enjoyed a phenomenal turnout on June 10th which resulted in a collection of €12,000 in total which was split between both partners. Thanks to everyone who came out in support.

Suspended Roscommon solicitor lodges €395,000 to client account of his former firm A suspended Roscommon solicitor has lodged some €395,000 to the client account of his former firm following complaints about him by clients, the High Court has heard. Ballaghadereen’s Declan O’Callaghan’s case was further adjourned on Monday for four weeks to allow for various matters, including an up to date report by the current managers of his former practice. Mr O’Callaghan agreed last July to several orders, including not to practice as a solicitor, pending the outcome of an inquiry by the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal (SDT) into his conduct. He was also to pay €350,000 from his personal funds by September 10th to the client account of Kilraine O’Callaghan, to cease his involvement with that firm and to make good any additional deficit that may occur after various identified client files are finalised. When his case returned on Monday before the president of the High Court, Mr Justice Peter Kelly was told €395,000 has been paid and Mr Brendan Steen has been meeting with clients to close out files. The judge was also told John O’Dwyer,

a solicitor who had acted for Mr O’Callaghan in the Law Society proceedings, had sought to come off record for him and the court heard another law firm is now representing Mr O’Callaghan. The judge expressed concern about the circumstances in which Mr O’Dwyer had sought to come off record. It appeared Mr O’Dwyer felt he was not being given the “full picture” by Mr O’Callaghan and the relationship of trust between the two had broken down. When he asked was the Law Society concerned or did it believe further orders were necessary, Nessa Bird BL, for the Society, said it was satisfied in circumstances where Mr O’Callaghan remains suspended, has no involvement with his former practice and in the context of the inquiry pending before the SDT. The Society was satisfied the various orders in place address concerns about the protection of clients and the public pending the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal inquiry, she said. The judge also queried why there was delay in advancing wardship proceedings aimed at protecting the substantial

estate of a bereaved child. The Society had earlier this year initiated its application for suspension of Mr O’Callaghan arising from concerns raised in an independent solicitor’s report, including his having withdrawn substantial fees from the estate of that child. When told on Monday the child’s mother had some concerns about wardship, the judge said the mother would have a full opportunity to air those but the aim of wardship was to protect the child’s assets. The court was previously told Mr O’Callaghan has reimbursed some €344,000 fees, including VAT, withdrawn by him from the child’s estate, which he has accepted were excessive. They remain lodged in a controlled account pending further court order. The child’s estate has assets of more than €736,000. Last March, the Society’s Regulation of Practice Committee, having considered the reports into the solicitor’s practice, referred him to the SDT for an inquiry into his conduct and authorised the Society to apply for an order suspending him from practice pending that inquiry.

ALLINA and Mayo at large is about to experience a reminder of Ireland’s most horrific catastrophe, the Great Hunger of the 1840s, which decimated the county, sending thousands to their graves and many more into exile. Four days in remembrance of the c 137 Orphan Girls sent to Australia from four of the county’s workhouse Ballina, Ballinrobe, Castlebar and Westport - run from Tuesday, 16th October, with the official opening at the Jackie Clarke Centre at 6.30 pm. One of the highlights of the opening evening will be the launch of a story-filled Commemorative Quilt complete with names of all Mayo orphan girls sent to Australia 1848-50. Stitched by individuals and groups from around the world, the Quilt is a Ballina Costume Company initiative, under the direction of Jane Crean, and will be accompanied by a Journal which sets out individual accounts written by participants, some of them descendants of the orphan girls. The night features opening of an evocative Famine Exhibition, performance by Atlantic Rhythm, music and song. Refreshments courtesy Cot and Cobble restaurant. On Wednesday, 17th, an all-day Famine Exhibition runs in Jackie Clarke Centre (10 am to 5pm) and will

include a fascinating Famine Workshop for Secondary schools (12 to 2pm), while on Thursday night , October 18 at 8pm, an Illustrated talk will be given by Terry Reilly in the local library. Entitled ‘Winnie’s Story’, it tells of the life and times of Winifred Jane Nealis, one of the girls sent to Australia from Ballina workhouse and a central character in his book, Mayo’s Forgotten Famine Girls. The attendance will include Australian Ambassador Richard Andrews and Minister for Higher Education, Mary Mitchell O’Connor. The Commemorative Quilt will also be on display. T

he community of Leitrim Village gathered recently in the Leitrim Gaels Community Field (Leitrim Gaels GAA Club) for a Benefit Social in support of a very special lady, Ruth Earley The 36- year-old daughter of Joe and Beth Earley (Dr. Beth McCarthy), Ruth has been in rehabilitation after dealing with the aftermath of a spinal cord injury all summer. Living and working in the film industry in London, her activities include the film school (North West Film

School) Action School of Film) while she also noted for her charity work for Syrian refugees in Calais, Serbia and Greece. during 2017. However last April Ruth woke for work as normal and was unable to feel anything below her waist. She was eventually diagnosed with cuada equina where the nerve roots in her lower spine were compressed. Ruth had emergency spinal cord surgery to try and minimise the long term damage. She was informed by doctors that she would never walk again.

Despite these warnings she embraced the challenge of rehabilitation and with many long and painful months with excellent medical and physio teams she was able to support herself, stand and take some steps with the help of splints and other vital equipment. She walked, with the aid of crutches, out of the National Spinal Cord Injury Centre in Stanmore, London after 14 weeks constant work and determination. Despite these small improvements in her ability to move her lower limbs and

slowly walk very short distances of up to 30 metres maximum, she will be heavily dependant on a wheelchair and access to specialised equipment to facilitate circulation in her lower legs. The results of the injuries are not just limited to standing and walking, with other normal bodily functions unlikely to ever recover and they will affect her everyday life going forward. The community in Leitrim village certainly showed their support for Ruth on this occasion.

Exciting times as Horan’s appointment confirmed There was much relief in Mayo last week with the announcement of as team manager for a four-year term. It was also announced he will hold trials for club footballers before he assembles a panel ahead for next season. Horan, who is expected to be the Head Coach in the new

Mayo set-up, as well as managing the team, said he ‘cannot wait to get started’. “All clubs (Senior/Intermediate/Junior) within Mayo will be contacted immediately seeking suggestions of players that may have the potential Technical/Tactical/Physical/M

ental attributes required for the inter-county game. “There has been a coaching movement in Mayo over the last number of years that has been staggering in its progression,” he added. “In conjunction with clubs and divisional boards, we have seen huge advances with clubs across the county driving very high standards. That is something I want to be involved with, and help ensure that progress continues. While his full management team has not yet been finalised, it is understood that Daniel Forde from Ballycastle (trainer) and Martin Barrett from Kiltane (selector) would both be involved. Forde is well-known for his work training many teams

including St Gerald’s College, Castlebar while Barrett was the Kiltane manager when they reached the 2013 AllIreland Intermediate club final, and also took charge of the North Mayo club’s senior team this season. Ardnaree native James Burke, who has played with Ballymun Kickhams in Dublin for many years, will take charge of training sessions involving Mayo players in the capital. Burke lined out with Mayo at all levels during his career. A number of other additions to Horan’s backroom team are expected to be announced in the coming weeks, with some speculation suggesting that former All Star forward, Ciaran McDonald, may be part of the new set-up.

Handel’s Messiah returns to Knock Basilica

Anna Devin, Soprano

F

ollowing last November’s unprecedented sell-out performance of Handel’s Messiah at the Knock Basilica, the trumpet shall sound once again on Saturday 3rd November with the return of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra for the second performance at the Basilica of the world’s most famous and beloved oratorio, renowned for stunning choruses and arias. Overflowing with the most exciting choral writing, thundering timpani and blazing trumpets, the Messiah energises audiences, and leaves them singing ‘Hallelujah’. The first ever performance of the Messiah took place at Neal’s New Musick Hall in

Proinnsías Ó Duinn, Conductor,

Dublin’s Fishamble Street in 1742. The “subscription list of six hundred persons was quite filled”, according to Handel himself, as ladies heeded pleas by management to wear dresses ‘without hoops’ in order to make ‘room for more company’ – something we trust will not be a problem at the more commodious Basilica! Featuring the RTÉ Concert Orchestra conducted by Proinnsías Ó Duinn, with a 180-strong choir and a world class line-up of soloists, this will be a sensational evening of delightful and thrilling music making. An alumna of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden’s Young Artist Programme, Royal Irish Academy of Music, the

Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the National Opera Studio, London, Anna Devin has performed on operatic and concert stages throughout Europe and the U.S. Recent highlights include performances in La Scala Milan, Vienna, Madrid, Salzburg, Covent Garden London, Seattle, Lausanne and Carnegie Hall New York. Dublin born Mezzo Soprano Kate Allen has enjoyed international recognition for her performances in Europe and the USA where appearances include Northern Ireland Opera, Ulster Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, La Fenice, Santa Barbara Opera and the Wexford Festival Opera. Tenor Peter O’Reilly is a graduate of the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama and has been a very successful prizewinner in the ESB Feis Ceoil, most recently winning the Cuisine de France John McCormack Bursary. His engagements to date take him from Dublin to the Buxton Festival and include two world premieres. Irish bass John Molloy has graced the stages of concert halls and theatres all over the world. Recent credits include performances in Bologna, Rouen, Netherlands, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, English National Opera London, Shanghai Opera, Rotterdam and Canberra. Proinnsías Ó Duinn served as Principal Conductor with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra from 1978 to 2002 when he was

Kate Allen, Mezzo Soprano,

appointed Conductor Laureate. During this time he recorded commercially with both the RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra. His repertoire ranges from popular music to major symphonies and includes many national and world premières. Proinnsías Ó Duinn conducts the international Messiah-Choir by invitation every year at the German city of Halle, the birthplace of Handel, and is the preeminent interpreter of the Messiah in Ireland. The RTÉ Concert Orchestra has been introducing orchestral music to new audiences since 1948 and was voted World’s Favourite Orchestra in an international poll (Bachtrack.com, 2015). Our Lady’s Choral Society was founded in Dublin in 1945 and in its annual performances appears regularly at the National Concert Hall with the National Orchestras. The coming together of OLCS with members of the Mayo Chamber Choir and Cór Mhaigh Eo will create a 180-strong choir to raise the roof of the Basilica in the breathtaking choruses, such as the Hallelujah and the great Amen. THE LATEST KITCHEN TRENDS FOR 2018/19 Dark Plum

Simple Luxury Dark Plum Another color to watch out for is dramatic purple, according to designer Francesco Bilotto. “You’ll see this tone showcased everywhere from kitchen cabinets to foyers,” he says. We’re partial to the dramatic backsplash in this modern space. Two-Tone Cabinets To add character to the 2017 Kitchen of the Year, San Francisco designer Jon de la Cruzused two finishes on the cabinets: weathered white oak and Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White paint in Modern Eggshell. “You see that kind of make-do cobbling together in old kitchens,” he says. Appliance Garages Another way to embrace the minimalist trend: smart storage. Here, San Francisco designer Jon de la Cruz created a home in the 2017 Kitchen of the Year for the toaster and coffeemaker to reduce counter clutter.

Decorating Kid’s Rooms F

or a child, a bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It's a spot to do schoolwork, play games, rough-house, read, daydream, visit with friends and stockpile toys. As you plan out your child's bedroom, you'll need a space that serves all those functions — and is comfortable and practical for several years to come. The ultimate experts on what kids like best are kids themselves, so get them involved in the design process by letting them help with selections. That being said, children's preferences change often, so use accessories and colors that be easily replaced. Overall, whether you're decorating a playroom, bedroom or nursery, be sure to think about fun, growth and practicality. How do I decorate a playroom? A playroom should be very lively and inspirational, so get creative with your color and furnishings. A wall mural or wall decal is a great way to incorporate playful design, while a chalkboard wall lets kids produce their own masterpiece. Try using fun furnishings, like beanbag chairs or floor cushions, and if you want to splurge, add in unique elements like a climbing wall, slide or swing. Because it is a multifunctional room, use space smartly. Install built-in cabinets

and shelves for much-needed toy storage, and include a desk or work table for homework and coloring. A craft station is a great way to get those creative juices flowing, or consider a small snack area with microwave and mini fridge. Divide the space into zones so that quieter kids can draw or read while louder, more active kids can watch tv or play a musical instrument. How do I decorate a kids bedroom? When designing a child's room, think about color, color and more color. Incorporate a favorite hue on the walls or bring in bright accents, but stick with neutral furniture that doesn't need to be swapped out as interests change. While the furniture should be appropriate for your child's age, it also should be something that can grow with him or her. Get fullsized dressers and cabinets that can last through the school years, and consider a bunk bed, which is great to share with siblings. As they get older and no longer want to share a room, you can add a desk underneath the top bunk. With so many toys and clothes, storage is key. Add builtins if you can, but cubbies and shelves are also great for those on a budget.

How do I decorate a nursery? In the younger years, safety is crucial. Review the literature on all surfaces and products, and get up to date on product recalls before you make major purchases. Once you've done your homework, it's time to start buying. Of course, a

crib and changing table are key purchases, while a rocking chair, baby swing and extra dresser are helpful additions. Be careful with adding too much furniture though; you want to be sure to leave some floor space for your young one to learn to crawl and walk. When it

This sweet, galleried play area designed by Trine Miller, has the dual function of creating an adventurous play space, while also keeping toys contained and out of view

comes to color, don't feel the need to go with just standard pink and blue. Yellow, brown and green are all great gender neutral palette choices and will make your nursery stand out from others.

Think creatively when it comes to arranging furniture, especially in a shared children's room. Beds don't have to be side by side

FOCUS ON FERMANAGH If you’re not cruising on the lakes in Co. Fermanagh or fishing, here’s a selection of other things to visit or things to do. 1. Take a stroll in Ely Lodge Forest... Ely Lodge Forest is a pretty quiet place, not very well known by tourists and located only a few kilometres from Enniskillen. Note that the forest extends over 250 ha by the Lough Erne, and its planting began in 1940. 2. Drive near Monea Castle... On the right-hand side, you can see a photo taken near Monea Castle. County Fermanagh

is still overall quite rural and has got quite a lot of forests, green fields and lakes. I thought this view is both nice and representative of this county, despite the grey sky... 3. Visit Enniskillen Town... Enniskillen (from the Irish: Inis Ceithleann meaning "Ceithleann's island") is the County town in County Fermanagh. It is located

almost exactly in the centre of the county between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. It has a population of approximately 11,500. On the right-hand side, you can see a photo of a part of the town, crossed by River Erne. 4. Visit the buttermarket of Enniskillen... The buttermarket is an area of Enniskillen, which has been converted into an Irish art and craft centre, specialised in sale and promotion of Irish and European craft products (paintings, sculptures, vases etc.). There you'll also be able to meet local artists. 5. Visit Enniskillen Castle... Enniskillen Castle was built almost 600 years ago by Gaelic Maguires chieftains. Guarding one of the few passes into Ulster, it was strategically important throughout its history. In the 17th century, it became an English garrison fort and later served as part of a military barracks. This historic site now houses 2 museums.

3. We over-exercise. “People undertake exercise regimes that are truly ‘regimes’,” he says. “People see these shows on TV where they suggest that exercise to the point of throwing up is desirable. Again, that is not a lifestyle – it’s a life sentence.” People also tend to overestimate the number of calories they’re burning, which can lead to frustration. “As a consequence, exercised-based approaches to weight management tend to get disappointing quite quickly,” he says. “That’s why gyms are busy in January and empty in March.”

1. We think dieting has to be painful. “The past 60 to 80 years of modern day dieting has been predicated upon the notion that dieting success is about suffering,” says Dr. Freedhoff. “It suggests that people struggling with their weight don’t deserve to eat like normal people

4. We eat out too often and consume too much processed food. “We’ve been duped by the food industry and our own willingness to believe you can find health and weight loss in restaurants or boxes, but it doesn’t work that way,” he says. “We, as a society, seem to be using restaurants and processed foods like our grandparents used refrigerators and the produce drawers.” Dr. Freedhoff says he sees far more people who eat out

three to four times a week than he does people who eat out three to four times a month. That equates to weight loss woes. “The calories we consume in restaurants are non-intuitive and astronomical in many cases. That salad you order might have more calories than a person burns in an entire day.” 5. We don’t think about the calories we’re drinking. “People are usually aware that sugarsweetened beverages can be problematic but they don’t always think about the cream and sugar in their coffee,” he says. “And people really don’t like to think

about alcohol because they enjoy it so much, but red wine has double the calories of Coca Cola and that’s something you can’t ignore if you’re trying to lose weight.”Best advice he can offer? “Weight management, in general, needs to be about people striving to live the healthiest lives they can enjoy — and not the healthiest lives they can tolerate. They need to make lifestyle changes, that are significant and enjoyable, but not severe. And that can be challenging when you’ve got a society telling you they need to be severe to work.”

GET YOUR HOME WINTER READY 10 tips to save on your heating bill this winter

G

etting your attic and walls insulated can save you up to 30% on your heating bills, but not everyone can afford it. So we’ve come up with 10 simple, effective and cheap ways to save money on your bills. Here are a few tips that are free and it’s just a matter of being more energy conscious. 1. Adjust your thermostat By turning your thermostats down by just one degree, you can save up to 3% off your energy bill. 2. Use your central heating wisely Make sure your heating is switched off when you are out of the house. Also, most of us forget to turn the radiators off in rooms we don’t use. This can impact your energy bill. 3. Keep the radiators efficient We all know that ‘bleeding’ the radiators helps them run more efficiently by getting rid of the locked air. But who has the time to check? That’s why we love this ‘Deaerator’ gadget for only €10.99 - it automatically keeps the air out of the radiators, making sure they are as efficient (and warm) as possible. 4. Insulate your windows Plenty of heat is lost through the windows of your home so remember to draw the curtains at night. Also, insulate the drafts around windows and doors (top tip: you can find the drafts easily by holding a lit incense stick around the window to find out where the cold air is coming in). 5. Install a chimney balloon This simple gadget will keep the drafts out and the heat in your room. All you have to do is inflate it up the chimney and it keeps the heat in nicely (please note this is not suitable for gas fires). Cost: €31.99 6. Reflect the heat back from your radiators A radiator reflector works by sending the heat from the back of your radiator into the room, rather than against the wall, meaning you get the maximum impact from your heating system. Cost: €20.94 (you could just use this in your main living area) 7. Draft excluders Sometimes the old fashioned stuff is the best and we really like this draft excluder

from Amazon. It fits snugly around the door and it can be cut to shape. Cost: €6.99 8. Plastic coat your windows If you can’t afford double (or triple glazing) put plastic film on those windows (€6 covers three windows). This will curb drafts and keep windows from rattling.

ITS TIME TO INSULATE

9. Keep heating vents clear Vents blocked by rugs and furniture prevent heated air from circulating efficiently. 10. Use heaters wisely In just one hour, a good heater should have done enough to heat the room- turn it off when it has the job done.
