HAT better way to herald the beginning of the end of the pandemic than to launch plans to celebrate the 300th anniversary of your local town and plot an optimistic path for its future. There was an atmosphere of hope and confidence on Friday, 17th September at the official launch of Ballina 2023 in the Walled Garden at the Jackie Clarke Collection on Pearse Street in the town. In 2023, 300 years will have elapsed since the town’s formal inception by Lord Tyrawley. While much has to be done over the next year and 3 months, a steering group, consisting of community, cultural and business interests, is planning for a year-long series of collaborative events and activities to celebrate the town and create a legacy that will perpetuate long into the future. It is hoped, of course, to re-awaken international interest in the North Mayo capital which proudly boasts of some distinguished ancestry, with the possibility of some significant presidential visits during the year. It will be an appropriate time to welcome home the diaspora of the area, as well as those with ancestry in the many towns and villages of north Mayo. Speaking at the launch Chairman of Ballina 2023, Cllr Jarlath Munnelly, said the project provided a huge opportunity to celebrate the town’s past but also to leave a significant legacy. Along with celebrating the town’s 300 years it was also about engaging with the community and getting them involved. We can enhance civic pride and love of place for people inside and outside the town by demonstrating the town’s many attributes in a new light. The occasion was marked by the official unveiling of the Ballina 2023 logo, alongside the slogan for the event; “A year of celebration. A lifelong connection.” Cathaoirleach of the Ballina Municipal District, Counclllor Annie May Reape, who had spoken earlier about the significance of the event on Mid-West Radio, declared Ballina 2023 live. A special video, “The Calling”, showcasing the sites and spirit of Ballina and its hinterland, including some pivotal events in its recent history, was launched and viewed for the first time by those attending. It can now be viewed and shared all over the globe on social media and on the official Ballina 2023 website. Later in the afternoon, attention swung to Tom Ruane Park on the Sligo Road and the first of many Ballina 2023 live events which are in the pipeline over the coming months in the lead-up to the official year. “Beginnings”, also part of Culture Night celebrations, featured entertainment from up-and-coming singer-songwriter and TV star Michael Maloney, Billow Wood, Bradley Brock, Fionnuala O’Boyle and David Lynn. Good social distancing protocols were adhered to and those pursuing Ballina’s quest to become Ireland’s greenest town would be impressed by the decision to encourage attendees to park in the town’s existing car parks and walk or cycle to the event as part of National Bike Week. Indeed, a number of cyclists undertook a special cycle around the bridges to mark the occasion.

n a weekend that will go down in cliff diving history, a record 23 tens (top scores) were handed out, two perfect dives were recorded in a single stop for the first time ever, and Carlow Gimeno became the first diver ever to perform a handstand dive directly off the rocks during the first round. Ireland hosted the fourth of the six stop 2021 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series on Sunday, 12th of September at the historic and picturesque location of Downpatrick Head, Mayo. 24 of the world’s best cliff divers faced possibly their toughest test yet as they leaped, twisted and somersaulted from heights of up to 27m and at speeds in excess of 85km/h, off the rugged cliffs and into the wild Atlantic below. Four-time World Series champion, Australia’s Rhiannan Iffland secured first place in the women’s competition with 391 points on her 11th consecutive win. Rhiannan blew her rivals out of the water with a sensational ‘perfect dive’, earning five 10s from the judges for the first time in her career. The first woman to achieve this feat, she also surpassed her own record for the highest single dive score. Joining Iffland on the podium were Canada’s Jessica Macaulay in second place and a fellow Aussie, wildcard Xantheia Pennisi, who put on a career-best display to make the top three for the first time. “It feels great to be on top of the podium once again,” said Iffland. “I was feeding a little bit from my training partner Xantheia Pennisi as well. Coming into the last two rounds today it was neck and neck and I think I really ate up the pressure and I enjoyed it. That dive in warm up it didn’t go so well, so I decided I had to switch my mindset for the competition and made sure that I gave it my absolute all. I went through the water and went ‘wow, that really

worked’. I’m super stoked and I guess I’ve got to figure out ways to spice it up and keep pushing myself. I guess I can kind of relax a little bit now and enjoy the competitions a little bit more. Saying that, I still want to go out there and give it my all to break those scores again. This is what I’m aiming for next.” In the men’s competition, France’s Gary Hunt secured his 41st victory in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. The eight time world series champion won with 442.50 points. Romania’s Constantin Popovici, Hunt’s closest competitor this season, earned four tens for his third round dive. In the final round, English prodigy Aidan Heslop grabbed two, Italy’s Alessandro De Rose picked up three, while the Spanish wildcard Carlos Gimeno wowed viewers with a firstever perfect handstand dive, becoming only the third man ever to receive five 10s from the judges. It is testament to Hunt’s character, ability and all-round mental strength that he managed to hold off this marauding challenge from the chasing pack to climb back on top of the podium again. Popovici took second place, while De Rose made the top three for the first time since 2017. “From Italy I expect fireworks,” said Hunt after his win. “I feel like everyone is really getting into their stride. You’ve seen how many 10s have been awarded this competition and everyone is getting comfortable. It will be really, really tough, but that’s what I love about this sport. It’s going to get tougher every year and let’s hope to finish this season with a bang.” The divers will continue their fight for the King Kahekili trophy at the first stop of an Italian doubleheader in Puglia on 22nd September. Check out Red Bull TV for coverage from the Downpatrick Head event.

The funding locations are in Mayo, Tipperary, Cork, Laois and Offaly. €30,000 will be available to support projects across the Kilalla Wind Farm Community Fund in Mayo The 7 Funds aim to support local teams to either begin new projects or expand on existing projects, creating a positive social or environmental impact in their community. Applicants can choose from 14 ideas that have already been proven elsewhere (both globally and in Ireland), or can submit their own project, once it addresses one of the fund themes, with up to €5,000 in funding available. Earlier this year, ChangeX successfully activated more than 25 community teams in Dublin with funding to start environmental projects through the Dublin Sustainability Challenge, in partnership with Microsoft.

Elena, who took part in the Dublin Challenge, used her €1,000 funding to implement the Pollinator Plan in her neighbourhood in Dublin 15. “We have learned more about the need for this project and why it is so necessary but the greatest impact of this project is the spirit within our community for our estate.” As a major owner of renewable energy infrastructure, Greencoat Renewables Plc is fully committed to supporting and funding community initiatives to build a more sustainable and prosperous society. Extending their commitment beyond renewable energy assets, Greencoat Renewables strive to operate in a responsible and sustainable manner for the benefit of all their stakeholders and seek to be a best-in-class partner for those living in close proximity to the wind farms they own. “Greencoat’s commitment to a sustainable future extends beyond the renewable energy we generate. That’s why we’re delighted to be working with ChangeX on (Insert specific fund name eg the An Cnoc Wind Farm Community Fund).

With community leaders having access to the ChangeX platform, we want to help foster new ideas and projects that leave a positive impact in the communities in which we are located.” said Greencoat’s Ben Brooks The Funds are open to people living within a 10km radius of the Glencarbry, Killhills, An Cnoc, Gortahile, Killala, Monaincha and Knockacummer Wind Farms, managed by Greencoat Renewables. The fund themes are Energy, Health & Wellbeing, Sports & Recreation, Culture & Heritage, Sustainability & Environment, and Education & Access.

To Apply For applicants starting a new project from the portfolio of 14 ideas, seed funding will be allocated to applicants on a first come, first served basis. For those applying for funding for an existing community project, there will be a review process, and those applications that best fit the criteria will be awarded funding. Final applications must be submitted via www.changex.org/ie by 7th October 2021.

Green light for Wild Atlantic Words With festivals and events being cancelled across the board, Wild Atlantic Words has come up trumps with the news that the acclaimed literary festival is to go ahead in Castlebar from October 5th to 10th. A truly exciting line up of writing talent has been finalised, from book launches to short story competitions, poetry to new writing, presentations to panel discussions on all things literary. Festival Director Kathryn Brennan says, “Having missed out last year because of Covid, and having to cancel at a late stage, we were determined that this year’s Wild Atlantic Words would become a reality, regardless of the difficulties.” Among the festival guests on this year’s programme will be psychologist and author Maureen Gaffney, historian Michael O’Connor, journalist and writer Tommie Gorman, and solicitor Pat O’Connor. Cormac O’Malley will launch his major new work on the centenary of Irish freedom; a special symposium will feature the recently published, ‘Men of the West’; while author Tony Lynott will open the festival with his debut novel,

‘The Chronicles of Máistir James Ronane’. There will be readings from the winners of the festival short story competition, while the informal but ever popular, ‘A Poem and a Pint’ will open its doors to poets old and new and aspiring. An innovation this year will be the introduction of the Festival Dome at Bridge Lane, a venue which will allow for the large numbers which the various events are certain to attract. Said Ms Brennan, “We are delighted to be able to host all events at our new Festival Dome. The enforced curtailment of numbers at our traditional venues had been creating problems in accommodating expected numbers, but with the Dome we will be in a position to cater for much larger audiences.” An added feature of the festival will be the looped showing of Alice Kinsella’s film of Blacksod Lighthouse at the Linenhall. The final event of the week will be ‘Sunday Morning Coming Down’, hosted by John Healy, with guests John Chambers, Liam Egan, Joan Geraghty and Sean Rice.

#ITSBack! IT Sligo welcomes students back on campus I T Sligo welcomed back many of its students on campus through a very special induction. This is the first time the institute has had to organise an induction event for existing students as many of our second years are on campus for the first time ever! The induction day titled #ITSBack included information kiosks of available services and supports to students. Regular campus tours were also held to give some of our students their first experience of campus life. All activities took place in a custom-built marquee on campus for extra safety and convenience – along with guided campus tours to (re-)introduce students to the Institute facilities. For those who couldn’t attend in person, the event was live-streamed on the day through local presenter and former IT Sligo student, Brendan Tierney. #ITSBack! was organised by the newlycreated Office of Student Success at the Institute and has the full support of the Institute and the Students’ Union. IT Sligo President Dr Brendan McCormack expressed his delight in welcoming students back on campus for the new academic year at IT Sligo: "This year we will have a significant increase in face-to-face teaching on campus and students can look forward to a return to a fuller student experience both academically and socially". Incoming ITSSU President Dáire Martin is optimistic about the year ahead: "I hope for a year that is completely incomparable to the last, filled with an on-campus experience and that truly makes up for the previous 18 months". The Students’ Union ‘intend on hitting the ground running to restore as much normality as possible for the exciting months ahead. We have all been working extremely hard behind the scenes to ensure that the students’ voice is at the heart of any decision-making regarding campus re-

turn. ITSSU are delighted to welcome students back to the grounds of IT Sligo and by working together with the institute, aspire to get our college experience back to the one we all know and love, safely’. It’s an exciting time for the Institute with new building developments on campus and the imminent announcement about es-

tablishment of the Technological University for the West and North-West with partners in GMIT and LYIT. As Dr McCormack notes, this means that “all our students will now graduate with a University qualification”. The institute will be hosting an induction day for first years this coming Wednesday and Thursday, 22nd and 23rd of September.

Deserved accolade for Ballina’s Christy McDonagh

T

HERE was jubilation in Ballina and North Mayo generally this week when local man Christy McDonagh was unveiled as the MACE Community Sports, Health and Well-being Unsung Hero in recognition of his tireless work with the voluntary underwater search and recovery unit in Grainne Uaile Sub Aqua club. Since 1980, Christy has given willingly of his time to conduct a search with the endeavour of returning a lost person to their family. Christy has been directly responsible for maintaining searches over multiple weeks, in all kinds of weather only ending with the recovery of a body. Christy has never once looked for recognition or reward for this community service. Now in his mid-70’s,Christy continues to contribute by helping train new members and ensure the diving gear for the rescuers is kept in pristine condition. Speaking to North West Express, Grainne Uaile Sub Aqua Club chairman J.F. Brisson said: “On behalf of Grainne Uaile Sub Aqua Club, I am delighted to be able to offer our most sincere congratulations to Mr. Christy McDonagh for being chosen as a national winner of the “Mace Unsung Community Hero Award”. We are thrilled Christy has received such valuable recognition because for years Christy has always quietly and diligently gone about his work and commitment to community groups and never once has he looked for anything in return. “Christy has dedicated over four decades to promoting sub aqua diving. In that time of just over 40 years Christy has given thousands of hours volunteering to the Grainne Uaile Search and Recovery Unit. He has been central to so many searches at times of the most unthinkable tragedies for families. “To this day some 41 years later, Christy is still central to the running of our Scuba Diving Club and our Search & Recovery Unit in Grainne Uaile S.A.C. Only recently Christy volunteered every day for two weeks to help out and drive a

boat with Grainne Uaile S.A.C in providing a water safety team to the Red Bull Cliff Diving event at Downpatrick Head. “Christy epitomises the definition of a community volunteer. While we as a club are blessed to have him as a member, we are also aware that he also assists with other local groups and clubs such as the Ballina Rowing Club, Bridge Club, School Boards and is a central figure in the local Canoeing Club for many years. “From the bottom of our hearts, congratulations Christy, and thank you for all you have done and continue to do.” Indeed, those familiar with Christy can vouch for the significant contributions he has made to many organisations in the region, most recently his work in helping to establish Ballina Rowing Club which is generating huge interest and support. Rowing Club chairperson Joe Doherty and captain Pat O’Brien were delighted with the recognition Christy received. Said Pat: “As club Safety Officer, and with so many decades of rowing experience, Christy makes such a valuable contribution to the club. It is truly an honour to work with him and he

thoroughly deserves this award”. Despite all this, in a recent interview with the local Mayo Now magazine, Christy stressed that all his projects and achievements could not have been possible without the commitment and support of the many community groups he has been proud to be a part of. The MACE Unsung Heroes initiative was launched by Ireland rugby star Johnny Sexton to stimulate community spirit and recognise true local heroes like Christy in communities all around Ireland. Commenting, MACE Sales Director Daniel O’Connell said, “Christy has devoted his life to helping families through the worst experiences of their lives and he is a truly inspiring individual. I am awestruck and full of admiration for his commitment and achievements. He truly embodies all that we look for in our heroes and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this acknowledgement.” In total, MACE presented five category Unsung Hero Community awards with each individual category winner being rewarded with cheques for €1,000, in addition to an overall MACE winner who received a cheque for €5,000.

The Georgina Campbell Awards are the most prestigious int he country and their results and analysis are awaited annually with bated breath. The Red Bank Restaurant in Carrick-on-Shannon came out tops this year, taking the Taste of the Waterways Award. Describing this year’s awards as “a kind of love letter to Irish food and hospitality,” editor and publisher Georgina Campbell paid tribute to those who work in the industry. “I am lost in admiration for all of the brave and dedicated people in the sector who have stretched themselves to the limit to keep their businesses (many of them family owned) going, keep their staff together if at all possible, and provide incredibly creative alternative services to customers.” She also commended the creativity and resilience of restaurateurs and

their staff. “Despite the early worries about mass closures, the most surprising thing about the last couple of years is the number of new openings, especially restaurants, cafes and, of course, food trucks, alongside some superb pivoting and diversification, notably the excellent retail operations that many restaurants have developed alongside, or sometimes to replace, the core business.” The Red Bank Restaurant, which is housed inside a former bank on St George's Terrace, took the brave decision this year to build a dome in their car park and serve customers outside. Keenans of Tarmonbarry, Co Roscommon, won best hotel in the same section. Neven Maguire, MacNean House & Restaurant, Blacklion, Co

Cavan, won the 'Happy Place' award for his segment on Marty Whelan’s breakfast show on RTE LyricFM.

Huge effort in Mayo for the Big Beach Clean A 10

Northwest Express September, 2021

fter a break in 2020, the Big Beach Clean took place over the weekend between 17th and 19th September and Clean Coasts were overwhelmed with the incredible support and commitment shown by communities across Ireland. The Big Beach Clean is an annual call to action that takes place in September at the end of the bathing season. Volunteers around Ireland were asked to register their clean up event and take part in a worldwide citizen science project, as part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), operated internationally by Ocean Conservancy. This year, a record number of over 400 clean-ups were organised by volunteers who removed 42 tonnes of litter across the

country. In addition, more volunteers joined clean-ups facilitated by Clean Coasts officers in 8 different locations around Ireland. In County Mayo, volunteers organised clean-ups in 15 different locations, removing approximately 1.4 tonnes of litter. Among these volunteers, Anne Hastings from Clean Coasts group Keep Our Beaches Clean held a clean up at Old Head Beach. The group said: “She was pleased to see the beach was relatively clean. Anne found items such as plastic, masks (these are a huge problem especially on the road sides), a kids sandal and a hat.” Sinead McCoy, Coastal Communities Manager, said: “After a break in 2020 due to Covid, we were excited to host the Big Beach Clean again, but we didn’t know what to expect. This year there was a significant increase in clean-ups organised, but in a different format: we saw more people registering for clean-ups as individuals or within their household.” Sinead continued: “This year, there was an over 5% decrease in litter found across Ireland. Overall this is an incredible improvement. The work that Irish volunteers do all year round to tackle litter and less waste dropped by more conscious beach users mean that we are heading in

the right direction!” Big Beach Clean volunteers have also taken part in an excellent worldwide citizen science project that will help shape future policies and campaigns to help protect our ocean. The project entails collecting the amount and types of litter on Irish beaches and filling in Clean Coasts’ Marine Litter Data Cards. This will help heighten awareness about the issue of marine litter and serve as an indicator of the magnitude of the problem. Once more, volunteers were asked to join

the call to action, no matter how far from the coast, thanks to the involvement of An Taisce National Spring Clean programme. Statistics show that the number one cause of marine litter is litter dropped in towns and cities and getting involved in the Big Beach Clean has been a way for residents of non-coastal counties to help prevent litter entering our waterways tackle the problem at its source. Similar clean-up operations were carried out by enthusiastic volunteers at beaches throughout the country.

Rory walks 180 miles to boost Children’s Cancer Fund

F

ormer Ulster, Ireland, British & Irish Lions Captain, Rory Best arrived in Cong Co. Mayo last Thursday having completed his 180 mile walking challenge in a bid to raise €500,000 for children’s cancer charity, Cancer Fund for Children. During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Rory set himself the challenge of walking from Cancer Fund for Children’s therapeutic short break centre Daisy Lodge in Newcastle Co. Down to the site of where the second Daisy Lodge will be built in Cong Co. Mayo, in just nine days. To mark the success of this epic challenge Rory celebrated with an event at Mount Falcon Estate in Co. Mayo on Friday evening. He was joined by key sponsors, members from the local community in Mayo along with Cancer Fund for Children representatives. The evening included a Q&A session with Rory Best and Mayo GAA player Keith Higgins as well as a silent auction raising funds for Cancer Fund for Children. Money raised from this event and Rory’s Miles to Mayo will go towards building the much needed second Daisy Lodge Therapeutic Centre in Ireland to support children with a

cancer diagnosis and their families. Short breaks allow families to spend quality time together in a safe and nurturing environment, far removed from hospital wards and treatment regimes. However, for every family the charity can support across Ireland there are another six they cannot which is why they urgently need to build a second facility in Co. Mayo. Speaking about his incredible achievement Rory said: “In terms of endurance walking over 20 miles a day for nine days was tough, but it is nowhere near as tough as the challenges families living with childhood cancer face. Along my journey I heard some heart-breaking and inspiring stories from children, parents, and health professionals. Whilst the care children diagnosed with cancer receive in hospital is excellent, it is clear that they really benefit from the emotional and therapeutic support provided by Cancer Fund for Children. I would like to thank everyone who has got behind me on this challenge - my wife Jodie, my kids, my family and friends and of course everyone who has donated so generously.” Cancer Fund for Children’s CEo

Phil Alexander added, “This is an incredible effort by Rory Best and we cannot thank him and his family enough. It is our hope that Rory has motivated and inspired others to do whatever they can to help us support families with a cancer diagnosis and ensure that

Deirdre Whyte, President of Ballina RFC, with husband Jimmy.

no child ever has to face cancer alone. We would like to thank Alan Maloney and his wonderful team at Mount Falcon Estate for their support towards this event and the local people of Mayo for their warm welcome and hospitality.” There is still time to donate to

Rory’s Miles 2 Mayo for Cancer Fund for Children, go to cancerfundforchildren.ie or donate to Rory’s JustGiving page here. Should you wish to know more about our new build Daisy Lodge in Cong please contact belinda@cancerfundforchildren.ie.

Calls for restoration of Mayo county crest AN issue has arisen among councillors in Mayo about the use – or disuse - of the county crest and they want to see the crest restored on local authority documentation. Its absence on recent publications - such as local newspaper ads for the AllIreland final and the

council’s annual report was highlighted at the monthly meeting of the authority by Councillor Michael Kilcoyne. The crest of the local authority was missing off them, and, he asked: “What happened to the crest when it’s missing?” Councillor Annie May

Reape noted how the crest has also been removed from council trucks, equipment, etc. The crest, she said, had been used in the past by Mayo GAA and was then adopted by the council. She felt they were doing themselves an injustice by not having it any more. Councillor Kilcoyne said he had no objection to the ‘M’ sign being used, but the crest had totally disappeared. Director of services Catherine McConnell said the crest will always remain the crest. Members were strongly in favour of both appearing on their documents and that was no problem. The ‘M’ logo is about visibility, the crest is an official emblem. The logo is about a sense of identity and it was instantly recognisable and a strong brand. The members issues about the crest would be taken on board. They could find room for both, she said. Chief executive Kevin Kelly said having viewed Mayo from outside for a long time, he felt the ‘M’ emblem is very strong as an identifier for Mayo.

The People’s Pharmacist 2021 – The Search is On

In every corner of Ireland, whilst the Covid19 pandemic closed GP surgeries and hospital capacity overflowed, pharmacists stepped up. Pharmacy doors remained firmly open during an unprecedented challenging time. Indeed, many patients turned to their community pharmacist for consultations for more serious conditions which are usually dealt with by GPs. Irish Pharmacy News is delighted to announce that the search is on to find The People’s Pharmacist for 2021, in association with Panadol; giving the Irish public the opportunity to nominate and vote for, their local pharmacist who has gone above and beyond. The People’s Pharmacist Award seeks nominations from across the country, giving patients the opportunity to recognise and salute their local pharmacist.

It was, with unparalleled gratitude to Irish pharmacists, that members of the public received vital medicines, health and wellbeing advice and that the vulnerable and those in need were protected and kept safe. Now more than ever before, it has become clear to everyone that pharmacists are one of the most critical members of Ireland’s health service family, embedded in the heart of every community. Through this Award, we are enabling the public to have a voice in recognising the unwavering support and spirit that makes pharmacists the backbone of our health service in every community across Ireland. Six finalists will be shortlisted from all nominations received, showcasing the leading stories of compassion and dedication which go above and beyond. A nation-wide voting process takes place to find The People’s Pharmacist 2021 recognising the bravery, hard work and sacrifice pharmacists have made since during the Covid pandemic since March 2020.

Government failures hitting students hard Rose Conway-Walsh TD

S

INN Féin spokesperson on Further and Higher Education, Rose ConwayWalsh TD, has said this year provides the clearest evidence yet that students have been let down by the failed housing policies of successive governments.

Ms. Conway-Walsh said: “Almost everyone in the state have been touched by the housing crisis. Despite having the highest college fees in the EU, accommodation remains the greater challenge for many working students and families on low and medium incomes. This particularly disadvantages students from rural areas. “This is having a profound effect on access and how equal our education system really is. “Reports this year suggest accommodation is more difficult to find than ever and some students may be forced to defer courses as they are unable to find somewhere to live. “It has been the policy of successive governments to rely on the private market for student accommodation. Over a ten-year period where colleges were starved of funding, Fine Gael provided private student accommodation developers with €87 million in public funds in

the form of tax breaks. “Despite this handout, no criteria for affordable rent was included and no department monitors the cost of purposebuilt student accommodation. Millions in public money and the government seemingly doesn’t care how much students are charged. “We have now seen large student accommodation complexes being given permission to operate as tourist accommodation on the bogus claim that is not enough demand. The reality is they most students can’t afford to live in high-end purpose-built student accommodation and these landlords are unwilling to lower the rent. “Colleges need to be supported to build on-campus student accommodation. In the last 5years only 679 beds have been added in on-campus student accommodation. This has completely failed to keep up with increasing student numbers. “Universities can access sustainable loans from the European Investment Bank via the Housing Finance Agency. But they have been starved of core funding meaning that they cannot make the most of opportunities to borrow at

cheap rates and invest in oncampus student accommodation. “On top of this, we have a situation where our public colleges rely heavily on revenue from international students to make up for underfunding. To attract international student colleges give them priority for on-campus accommodation. This have led to a situation where up to half of all oncampus student accommodation goes to the more lucrative international students. “Institutes of Technology and the new Technological Universities have been left in an even more difficult situation as they have not been given the ability to borrow independently and the government have simply not provided anywhere near the capital investment they need. “The Housing for All plan talks about the need for IOTs and TU to have access to finance for student accommodation but says nothing about on-campus accommodation in universities where some of the most acute demand exists. “Housing for all doesn’t seem to include students. Sinn Féin would invest in our colleges and build publicly owned student accommodation that students can afford.

St. Angela’s Nursing Interns complete their studies during COVID-19

Final year BNSc Nursing Interns throughout the country had an experience like no other in 2020 and again in 2021, and those studying General Nursing and Intellectual Disability Nursing at St. Angela’s College, Sligo were no different. As part of their fourth and final year, they embarked on their 36-week internship in various clinical and healthcare settings which would mark the completion of their degree. Of course, no one

predicted that the COVID-19 pandemic would see these interns join other healthcare professionals as vital front-line workers as the fight against the virus continues 18-months on. “While being aware of the risks that interns faced this year, our BNSc students were dedicated to not only continue on their academic course but they also joined a workforce that performed above and beyond in a time of such

uncertainty” explains Dr Edel McSharry, College President (Acting). “We’re extremely proud of all our BNSc graduates over the years and know that they too are contributing hugely to the profession, a profession they chose out of compassion and a desire to help others, this is what it truly means to be a practising nurse”. During their final year the Nursing Interns were official

employees of the HSE in addition to being third level students so they had a dual role with employee responsibilities while learning in practice and being supported by their educators. The BNSc General and BNSc Intellectual Disability students have just recently completed both practical and theoretical elements of their course and are currently applying for registration as a nurse with the Nursing Midwifery Board

of Ireland (NMBI). They will also be conferred and become graduates of the National University of Ireland. First year BNSc students at the College are pre-registered with the NMBI as a candidate Nurse with full registration on successful of the four-year course. naturalhealth Foods That Can Boost Brain Health Northwest Express September, 2021

7 W

ith so many being diagnosed with dementia eating the correct food may help protect our brain. While dementia cannot be cured, researchers are increasingly convinced that what we choose to eat may help protect our brains. Here are seven foods that show promise. 1. Salmon Eating fatty fish like salmon regularly appears to lower the risk of dementia as you age. (If you aren’t a fan of salmon, you can get the same effect from mackerel, herring, sardines or trout.) These fish are high in omega-3, a fat that is essential for our brains to function properly, yet almost exclusively must come from our diets. Should you skip the fish dish and take an omega-3 supplement instead? Right now, the evidence for the oil alone is less compelling, so go for the whole food. You’ll get the most benefit from salmon if you avoid frying or grilling it, as the byproducts from these cooking processes can increase your Alzheimer’s risk. 2. Pomegranate A 2016 study led in Australia by the University of New South Wales’ Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing has found that pomegranate can defend the brain against cognitive decline – in mice, at least. Researchers saw several positive kinds of brain responses, including reduced inflammation, in mice that received pomegranate extract in their diets. Other animal research has also suggested the antioxidant content

of pomegranate can help preserve brain health. Studies in humans are underway, including one with pomegranate juice at the Longevity Center at University of California, Los Angeles.

3. Leafy greens This may explain why Popeye is still going strong at almost 90: Eating spinach, kale, collards and other dark green, leafy vegetables appears to slow down cognitive decline. A large study at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago found that older people who ate one to two servings per day of leafy greens were, on average, 11 years behind the age-related mental changes of those who never ate any at all. The brain-boosting nutrients in these leafy dark-green veggies are believed to include vitamin K and the plant pigments lutein and beta-carotene. 4. Berries A growing body of research has observed that berry fruits seem to help the brain stay healthy with age. Berries contain an array of important compounds that appear to be protective, including anthocyanidins, which act as antioxidants. This tasty fruit group includes strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries, but there’s no need to keep it traditional. Why not give haskap berries a try – they have a flavour similar to blueberries and raspberries – or black currants, which make a jam that can’t be beat?

5. Olive oil Populations adhering to the socalled Mediterranean diet – the traditional, primarily plant-based way of eating in Mediterranean countries – seem to have a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. And while the diet embraces many beneficial foods, one is a standout: olive oil. In mice, extra-virgin olive oil has been shown to preserve memory and actually reduce Alzheimer-related lesions in the brain. Extra-virgin olive oil is the least refined grade of the oil, retaining all of its original natural antioxidants. Lucky for you, it is also the most flavourful.

6. Beans Beans, beans, they’re good for the brain. We’re not talking about those green beans in the fresh produce section (although they’re certainly healthful as well), but rather the group of legumes that includes black beans, chickpeas, soybeans and kidney beans. These beans have an exceptionally high concentration of certain anti-inflammatory compounds that appear to be neuroprotective. Beans are also high in protein and fibre, and low in fat, so they have a lot going for them. Aim for three or more servings of beans per week. (Find beans gassy? Increase your dietary intake slowly, and be sure to drink enough fluids.) 7. Mixed nuts Nuts nourish the brain with their rich balance of different fats – including omega-3, as well as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Individual nut varieties have individual fat ratios; don’t be afraid to mix it up. Nuts are high in calories, however, so don’t go overboard on this snack if you want to watch your weight. One ounce a day (the equivalent of 24 almonds, 35 peanuts, 14 walnut halves, 18 cashews or eight brazil nuts) will give you the nutrients you need. Go nuts.

BRAIN HEALTH RECIPES IDEAS! Easy-to-Make and Delicious Salmon Rice Bowl Need to whip up something quick for dinner? Try this Japanese-style teriyaki salmon rice bowl that’s delicious, healthy and a breeze to make. Ready to be bowled over? Check out this incredible Japanese-style Teriyaki Salmon Rice Bowl, an easy, healthy and extremely tasty meal. The homemade teriyaki sauce (it’s easy, we promise) is lustrous and lends a sweet and tangy glaze to the tender roasted salmon. Paired with sautéed spinach and creamy avocado, this hearty-yet-healthy salmon is superb. Ingredients Honey Teriyaki Sauce 6 tbsp soy sauce 6 tbsp mirin 6 tbsp sake 2 tbsp honey 1 tbsp cornstarch 2 tbsp water 4 (6oz) salmon fillets 2 tsp olive oil 10 oz baby spinach ½ tsp kosher salt ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper 4 cups cooked Jasmine rice

1 large ripe avocado, thinly sliced, for garnish Black sesame seeds, for garnish Green onions, thinly sliced for garnish

Directions 1) For the teriyaki sauce, in a small bowl, whisk soy sauce, mirin, sake and honey. In another small bowl, combine cornstarch and water and mix until smooth. Set aside. Remove 3 tbsp of soy mixture for marinating salmon. Pour remaining soy mixture in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Whisk in cornstarch mixture and continuously whisk until desired thickness, about 2 minutes. 2) Place salmon fillets in a large reusable plastic bag and add reserved 3 tbsp of soy mixture. Set aside to marinate for 30 minutes. 3) Preheat oven to 400ºF and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Remove salmon from marinade and place on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, remove from oven and brush the top of each salmon fillet with a generous amount of teriyaki sauce. Return to oven and bake 3-5 minutes more until fish flakes easily. Remove from oven. 4) While the fish cooks, in a large skillet, heat olive oil over mediumhigh heat. Add spinach, salt and pepper and toss to coat with olive oil. Cover and cook for 1 minute, uncover, turn heat to high and cook 1 minute more while continuously stirring. Remove from heat. 5) To assemble bowls, place cooked rice in the bottom of each bowl. Divide sautéed spinach between the 4 bowls and lay salmon over spinach. Garnish each bowl with a few slices of avocado, a sprinkling of sesame seeds and green onions. Drizzle remaining teriyaki sauce over finished bowls.

NEW MERCEDES-BENZ EQA INTELLIGENT ELECTRIC SUV EDITORIAL By BREDA CORRIGAN

M

ercedes-Benz introduced its first all-electric SUV on to the market in 2019 in the shape of the EQC, which was based on its already successful GLC. Now they have added another, yet smaller SUV to their all-electric model range. Called the EQA, the newcomer aims to offer a cheaper way into the German premium brand’s quickly expanding EQ range. The EQA sits on the same chassis as the GLA, although it’s been given some revisions to allow it accommodate an electric powertrain. The EQA is powered by an electric motor which works in conjunction with a 66.5kWh battery, while easy charging options allow a full charge (10% to 100%) in as little as five hours and forty-five minutes from a domestic wall box charger, or just 30 minutes from a public rapid-charge facility (10% to 80%).

Trim, Power and Drivetrain Options The EQA is available in three trim levels, with the EQA 250 Progressive being the base model, while Electric Art and AMG Line trim options are also on offer. A choice of power outputs (190, 228 or 292bhp – badged EQA 250, 300 and 350 respectively) and drivetrain options (front-wheel-drive or 4MATIC all-wheel-drive) across the range enables EQA customers to choose the trim, power and drivetrain that suits their needs best. The entry-level EQA 250 comes with a single electric motor with 190bhp and 375Nm of torque for instant acceleration. Positioned under the bonnet, and driving the front wheels, it will accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 8.9 seconds which is about the same as a regular GLA 200 with a 163bhp petrol engine – while an official

range of up to 423km’s from a fullycharged battery should be enough for a number of days driving between charges for many drivers. Visual differences between the Mercedes-Benz GLA and EQA include the installation of a shiny gloss plastic front panel on the EQA in lieu of the traditional front grille on the GLA, along with the addition of lights strips front and rear, which is similar to its larger sibling, the EQC.

Well-Appointed Cabin The cabin in the EQA feels like a proper Mercedes-Benz, with great interior space and enough room in the back for taller adults to sit behind the front seat occupants, while the tall doors make it easy to get in and out. The EQA’s battery pack is located under the cabin and this results in a boot capacity of 340-litres, but this cargo volume can be increased to 1,320-litres when the 40:20:40 split-folding rear seat backs are folded flat. Overall build quality is impressive and no matter which model is chosen, standard equipment is generous, with dual 10.25-inch displays creating a widescreen look across the top of the dash. The intuitive infotainment system is excellent, with sharp graphics and a touchscreen which responds quickly to all inputs. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both standard across the EQA range, along with a nine speaker audio system. Test Car My test car was an EQA 250 ‘Progressive’ finished in nonmetallic Night Black paint with optional beige macchiato and black ARTICO leather interior. Key standard equipment on my car included: 18” 5-twin spoke light alloy wheels, 4-way lumbar

support, acoustic ambient protection, Active Brake Assist, Active Lane keeping Assist, Blind Spot Assist, light and sight package, 10.25” media display, mirror package, parking package with reversing camera including PARKTRONIC, ambient lighting, charging cable for domestic socket, charging cable for wall box and public charging stations, comfort suspension, cruise control, EasyPack tailgate, extended MBUX functions, hard-disc navigation, heated front seats, keyless-go, LED high-performance headlamps, MBUX Multimedia system, pedestrian protection, and automatic climate control.

Instant Torque and Acceleration The EQA handles in a predictably safe and secure fashion, while decent levels of regenerative braking mean that you can drive mostly with one pedal, making trips around town a little easier. This standard system is intuitive to use and it allows the driver to adjust the rate of deceleration in order to coast along a level road, or maintain speed on a downhill stretch. The suspension in the EQA provides supreme comfort when driving over rutted road surfaces and enhances the serenity on offer for all occupants. Anyone who has driven an all-electric car will probably appreciate the instant hit

of torque and rapid acceleration from a standing start, and the EQA doesn’t disappoint in this regard either.

Pricing & Verdict The new Mercedes-Benz EQA is a very desirable electric SUV in every respect. The interior is comfortable, it is relaxing to drive, spacious and practical, while the very latest on-board technology is impressive. With the new EQA, Mercedes-Benz has indeed created a compact SUV with ‘Electric Intelligence’. Pricing for the new Mercedes-Benz EQA starts at €51,120 – inclusive of an SEAI grant of €5,000 (T’s & C’s apply).

“I was fortunate to be passing a chemist shop in my home town and decided to make an appointment with the audiologist. I had a test with another provider about six months prior who recommended hearing aids costing €4,200 as it turned would not have benefited me in any way. I was keen to have a second opinion as to the cause of severe hearing loss on one side and wanted to be sure it wasn’t just age related - I’m in my 60’s. Mrs. Ann Marie Kelly’s knowledge and expertise identified a possible serious medical condition and strongly suggested referral to ENT specialist, who in turn referred me to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where I’m having on-going care. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kelly calm patient manner and her ability to explain everything without being alarmist. Definitely shows an interest and dedication in her work not seen everyday” - AC, Mayo
