SUPER WEEKEND FOR CORRAN AC

Sligo Rugby awards dinner at The Glasshouse Hotel

Enda Gavin, Sean Mullin, Mark Rooney and Mike Wells with their awards at the recent end of season Sligo Rugby awards dinner at The Glasshouse Hotel.

B

rilliant bronze for Craig, PB for Doohan and a demolition in Athy by Ni Mhurchu The weekend began early Saturday morning in Athy with 2 athletes to the fore in the double Olympic distance Triathlon. Caoimhe Ni Mhurchu and Raymond Byrne showed up well on the swim with Ni Mhurchu 3rd female from the water and Byrne just outside the top 20. On the bike Ni Mhurchu surged clear with a solid biking performance and Byrne too moving up the field. On the run both athletes equipped themselves very well, again Byrne moving through the field to finish 13th and Ni Mhurchu never looking back on her run to run out a 15 minute winner. Over in Tullamore the eagerly awaited Irish Schools Championships were taking place and first up was Adam Walsh in the long jump, Adam jumped well and finished 9th just shy of his PB and later finished 8th in the 100m. Ellen Kilcoyne was next up and lay in 3rd throughout the qualifying jumping a PB of 4.99m, in the jump off

she dropped back to 5th place overall and just 12cm off silver. Ellen was later 7th in the 100m 1 place behind her training partenr Erin Taheny. Taheny followed her run up in the 100m with a brilliant run in the 200m just fading toward the end but running 26.50 and finished 6th in a very hotly contested event. Kate Hosey contested the minor girls long jump and put in a massive opener only for it to be a slight break and she again broke her 2nd jump but then followed this up with a big 4.76m jump and qualified her for the final where she finished 6th and she doubled this up with a fine 8th place finsih in the girls 100m final. The 4th of the Connaught school long jump champions from St Atrractas Asad Munir jumped really well and just failed to make the final, finishing in 8th place. Back on the track Lauren Cadden just missed out on bronze in a very hotly contested womens 200m but had the compensation of running an outdoor pb of 24.9 and will set the rest of her season up nicely.

The star of the day was Craig McLoughlin who came with a late burst out in lane 8 to claim a brilliant bronze medal which was excellant for the talented Summerhill student. There was loads more big performances throughout the day and definite signs of medals to come over the coming years. Conor Melvin went to Cavan for his first sprint triathlon of the year and all was going well up to the run where he was very badly effected by blisters but he battled on and finished a credible 12th place and will have learned loads from the experience. Mini Marathon Monday saw Sara Doohan show age is only a number when she improved her 10km PB by nearly 1 full minute, running 36.30 and finishing 5th overall out of a field of almost 50,000 on the streets of Dublin. This is a testament of hard work and determination by the Corran AC woman. Overall a superb weekend with lots ahead over the coming weeks and months!

Sligo Rovers F.C. manager Gerard Lyttle was a big hit when he attended the Ballisodare United F.C end of season youth awards last month. Gerard gave the kids encouragement and great advice.

Bike week got off to a great start in Sligo with Pedal to Paddle and skills and drill's. Lots of fun was had in Doorly Park and the weather stayed bright which was an added bonus.

ST JOHN’S GAA ON TOUR

O

n Saturday the 10th June, St. John’s GAA Academy players from our 7’s, 8’s, 9’s and 10’s teams went on Tour! Due to the demand, a second bus was booked from Daithi at Feehily’s Bus Hire. After an excited sleep, the players met at 8.30am at St. Enda’s NS Carraroe and set out for the Journey to Mohill GAA, Leitrim. On arrival at the Philly McGuinness Park in Mohill, we were greeted by glorious sunshine which meant the factor 50 came out!. Four pitches were already set up and a warm welcome was extended from Paul, Bridget and all the Mohill GAA club members. After a group photo, the games began. All teams played four quarters and there was some great football skills on show from both sides. Some players from St. John’s mixed in with Mohill and great sportsmanship ensued. You can see the players have developed well and are now playing with greater skill levels. Good passing and tight marking was noticeable. Long range scores and clinical finishing were also evident. The referees hadn’t totted up the

scores at time of print but it looked as if the games finished level!!. After the games, our players, coaches and parents were given a royal reception of drinks and food. Mohill were so generous, that each St. John’s player received a goody bag when leaving. Back on the buses and the next stop was Lough Key Forest Park. Oliver the boat man, was expecting us. We arrived and noticed Darren O’Flaherty’s Toughest Mudder competition just starting. A 10km obstacle course, not for the feint hearted! There was a great buzz around the park. Our U8’s took the boat trip first, while our u10’s used the astra pitch to focus on their football skills. The boat trip was fantastic. Karaoke and singing of songs were great fun. Visiting the islands on lough key and hearing of the history associated with this wonderful area. Our boat captains were very informative and particularly when we got to “Teddy Bear Island”! Some dance moves were produced on board which should not be seen on the mainland! After docking the roles reversed. With the hunger setting in, we moved to the large room in the Boda Berg for

SLIGO SPORT JUNE, 2017

Some mighty fishing over the weekend with Ewings Sea Angling and Boat Charters

Pizza, nuggets, chips, drinks and some very tasty ice cream. All players had some pocket money which was spent wisely in the gift shop! The slush puppy machine went into overdrive.... Padraig and Hugh escorted us back to Carraroe, where a large crowd awaited. This was an amazing day for all players and club members. It has created a great memory for all and forged a strong bond among all teams. Thanks must go to: Fr. Pat Lombard for his support, our bus drivers, All involved in Mohill GAA, the boat captains, staff of Lough key Forest Park, everyone associated in the preparation and planning of the day, James Lineen for the wonderful photos to capture the day, all parents and coaches who came along and above all to the players. The respect and good manners shown on this trip was admirable and a credit to their families. Well done! It was also great to develop this wonderful link St. John’s GAA have with Mohill GAA. This was another iconic day for our club as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary #1987-2017

Yeats County Cycling Club member Matthew takes first win of the season at the Donegal Bay Club League

Well done to our Feachtas Quiz team of Michael Kilcoyne, Aoife O’Donnell, Eoin Murphy and James Devaney which recently took part in the All-Ireland Feachtas Quiz Finals in Dublin. The team emerged second overall in the North-West Regional qualifiers and represented the Region at the National Finals. The competition is open to all second-level schools across the country, including Gaelcoláistí. It was a very competitive contest with six rounds of ten questions each - all “as Gaeilge”. Although, on the day, they were not one of the final prizewinners, the SGS team performed exceptionally well and thoroughly enjoyed their day out.

Grammar School Senior Rugby players selected on Connacht squad

On 29th April Sligo Grammar School Senior Rugby players, Kuba Wojtkowicz and Graham Kerr were presented with special jerseys to mark the occasion of their selection for the Connacht Schools Rugby Team of the Year. This award, sponsored by the Irish Independent, identifies the best schoolboy players in the province in each position on the strength of their performance in the Connacht Schools Rugby Cup. Graham was picked as one of the best backs in the province while Kuba was chosen as tighthead for the team. Well deserved to the boys who have worked so hard over the years on the school’s rugby teams.

Sligo Triathlon Club Well done to everyone who was participating in the Metalman swim series recently. The water was warm but choppy. Also big well done to Sligo Tri members Conor Melvin(12th) and Ray Gillen(18th) who took part in the James McManus memorial in Cavan. This was only Conor’s second senior level triathlon and he came a fantastic 12th place! Well done lots of success for the future

YEATS COUNTRY CYCLING CLUB A

nother busy month for the club has passed, if running a race on the Saturday wasn’t enough for one weekend most of those involved made the trip to Bohermeen on the Sunday for the Waller Cup. Matthew was in the U16 race and finished just outside the top 10 which is a fine result given the fact he raced out of his skin on the Saturday in our own race! Alan, Paul and Pauric were up at the crack of dawn for the start of the A4 race and Pauric got a well deserved podium with a fine 3rd place and Alan took 5th which is a super result for both lads given their only recent start to racing. Strong as bulls!! Michael Devins, Stevie, Ross and Basil took to the A3 race and Stevie placed 4th on the day after the lads worked together to bring back the days break all of the others finished inside the top 20. Derek and Joe were in the A2 race and although Derek was in every move for the first 60km he paid for his efforts in the last 5km with cramp and in Joe’s first race as an A2 he showed no fear and was active in the latter part of the race, both finished in the bunch.

GRAMMAR SCHOOL STUDENTS TAKE TO THE GARAVOGUE

This term Sligo Grammar School welcomed Ronan Ivers who started a rowing club in the school. Throughout the term students trained on the rowing machines to build strength and develop their rowing technique. In what was a fantastic weekend for Irish rowing, the SGS students took to the Garavogue on Saturday, thanks to Sligo Rowing Club who allowed our students use their boats. After their hard work on the rowing machines it was a treat to experience the buzz of rowing on the river. Thanks to Ronan for his hard work and dedication and hopefully next year will see the club go from strength to strength. Now all we need are a few boats of our own!!

Just a few snaps of the beginning of the event today. A big word of thanks to Kevin Egan for his sponsorship of the event with two lead cars, goodie bags for the first 100, and all the advertising he did on social media and Iradio on the run in. Also for the big notice signs on the approach roads to town. A big thanks to the Committee for all their efforts and club members who volunteered prior to the event and those that turned up today to help also. Usually we get about 80 cyclists for this event but we drew 134 today which is fantastic! I’m sure “Friends of Cregg” are delighted with the turnout and a big thanks to them and Brenden Mullen who supplied so much food on the day. A big thanks too to members who supplied food also to the event. It wS a great success with no accidents and only one puncture that I am aware of.

CONGRATS TO OUR URSULINE COLLEGE GIRLS

Congratulations to the Ursuline 1st year team on winning their recent Connacht final 1-0

H

uge congratulations to our Ursuline College girls who excelled at the recent Schools Interpro 2017 & the Irish Senior Schools Relay Finals 2017. The 2017 Irish Schools Interpro took place in the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin on Saturday 29th April. We are proud to say that the Ursuline College had three swimmers competing at this major gala. The Ursuline’s Maeve Keaney, Carrie McDaid and Danielle Farrell were all members of the Connacht team and the three girls performed magnificently. Carrie, Danielle and Maeve all qualified for selection for the Connacht team by finishing in the top two positions when they competed in the Connacht Senior Schools Swimming Championships 2017 in Athlone back in January. Also on Saturday last, the Irish Senior Schools Relay Finals took place in the National Aquatic Centre. There was one team competing for the Ursuline College, Sligo in the 15-16 year old category. The team comprised Carrie McDaid, Tara Walsh, Maria Lyons and Danielle Farrell. Maria (14) and Danielle (13) were both swimming up an age group. I’m delighted to inform you that the Ursuline girls finished in 3rd place in both their relays. Competing against eight other schools from throughout Ireland, the Ursuline team claimed bronze in the 200m Medley Relay and also in the 200m Freestyle Relay. Pictured are Carrie McDaid, Danielle Farrell, Maria Lyons and Tara Walsh.

Amber Flag Awarded for Positive Mental Health

Sligo Grammar School was recently awarded the Amber Flag for Positive Mental Health. We are the first school in the country to receive this flag. It was presented to the SGS by former Munster and Ireland rugby player Alan Quinlan at a ceremony in Cork. The school received the award because of the work done this year in the promotion of positive mental health. The Positive Mental Health week that was run in the school in early 2017 was a big factor as well as other initiatives such as the Mindfulness board, the Worry Tree, posters designed by 2nd yr Art students and the general sense of openness within the school with regard to mental health. Well done to all the teachers and students whose efforts helped the Grammar School achieve this award.

We would love if your club could submit pictures and reports on what is happening in your organisation on a regular basis and we will be sure to include it. ST. ENDA’S NS, CARRAROE GIRLS AND ST. JOHNS NS BOYS WIN THE INAUGURAL GALVIN CUP AND FR MURRAY CUP IN WHAT CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS A A FANTASTIC DAY FOR ALL INVOLVED.

B

oth boys and girls pupils from St Enda’s in Carraroe, Our Lady of Mercy NS, Pearse Road, and St Johns of Temple Street gave a brilliant display of how football should be played in the inaugural competition between the three schools. Games were played in the old fashioned way where players were encouraged to go for scores when the chance arose and boy did they do that. There were points scored that any minor player would be proud of. No systems or sweepers, just unbridled skill and great sportsmanship that all pupils and teachers should be proud of. If a player hit the decks a helping hand was outstretched from the opposing player to help him or her to their feet again. All games were played in the magnificent Markievicz park on Friday last in front of enthusiastic supporters from the three schools involved while the sun shone . While it may have been Carraroe girls and Johns boys who lifted the silverware when the final whistles were blown all players were winners on the day

Our U16 Boys who competed in the A All Irelands in Cork last month. Despite been in a very tough group with the two best teams in the country we showed more than enough to believe we can compete at this level. Many thanks to all the parents that travelled and made sure the team wanted for nothing all weekend. Onwards and upwards to next season.

CrossFit is the new definition of fitness - CrossFit creates ATHLETES What is Fitness? For years the fitness industry have been unable to define fitness, until now. CrossFit has defined fitness as “an increase in work capacity across broad time and modal domains”. This basically means fitness should not be determined by any one trait but should be determined by how good an individual is at everything, to achieve this level of fitness we must specialize in nothing.

Junior fishing clubs and youth groups in Sligo invited to get in front of the camera and reel in the votes Inland Fisheries Ireland launches Fish & Film Competition

I

nland Fisheries Ireland has launched a Fish & Film competition to encourage young people to spread the word about fishing. Junior fishing clubs, youth clubs, projects and centres in Sligo are invited to apply to the competition by taking film footage of their fishing adventures and promoting it online. The Fish & Film competition will see Sligoo entrants film a fishing trip and include fun interviews on what angling means to them. The films will be youth led in content and production with all junior anglers up to and including the age of 18 eligible to apply. All films submitted to Inland Fisheries Ireland will be uploaded onto the organisation’s YouTube channel and the public’s views on each film will count as votes! The top three groups with the most views on their film entry will go forward to a junior fishing competition which includes a free day’s fishing for all. The overall winner of the Fish & Film Competition will receive a €1,000 fishing tackle voucher for their club with the two runners up winning a €250 voucher. Suzanne Campion, Head of Business Development at Inland Fisheries Ireland said: “We want to hear from the next generation of anglers in Sligoo and across the country to find out what fishing really means to them – why they enjoy it and why they think other young people should get involved. If we are to increase domestic participation and secure the long term future of angling, then we need to engage with the next generation of anglers and learn more about

EJ SLIGO ALL STARS to be joined by five teams who are approved to play in 2017/18 mens division one Five teams have applied to join the Basketball Ireland Men’s Division One National League for the 2017/18 season, with all five applications approved by the MNCC following an interview process at the weekend. Titans, who came bottom of the Men’s Division One League last year, successfully reapplied for the Division this year, and they will be joined by four new teams including: Portlaoise Panthers, Ballincollig BC, LIT Celtics and St Paul’s BC Killarney. Speaking about the news, Chair of the MNCC Bernard O’Byrne stated: “This is an exciting time for basketball in Ireland. We are delighted to see the continuing growth of the sport, and the addition of four new teams to the League further underlines the hard work and commitment that is being put in at underage level by clubs around the country. “We are delighted to see a midlands team come in to the Men’s National League with the arrival of Portlaoise Panthers. They have enjoyed a lot of underage success and have a women’s team in the Super League so this was the next logical step for the club and we look forward to welcoming them. “Ballincollig BC bring the number of Cork clubs participating at National League level to four, highlighting the great work that is being done in the county to grow and develop the sport while similarly in Kerry, St Paul’s BC are the third Kerry club to join the National League in as many years. We are also delighted to welcome LIT Celtics to the League, and to welcome Titans BC back to the League once more. There is certainly an exciting year of basketball ahead.” The addition of the teams has increased the Men’s Division One League to 15 teams, with the five aforementioned teams joining: BFG Neptune, Ulster University Elks, ITC Basketball, Team Kilkenny, LYIT Donegal, Ej Sligo All-Stars, Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin, Fr Mathews, Dublin Lions and Radisson Blu UL Eagles.

We would love if your club could submit pictures and reports on what is happening in your organisation on a regular basis and we will be sure to include it. Sligo to host Scór All Ireland Finals in 2018

S

ligo GAA’s Scór Committee has recently been informed it will be hosting the All Ireland Scór na nÓg and Scór Sinsir finals in 2018. The cultural event is the showpiece of the GAA’s commitment to promotion of the Irish language and other cultural activities off the football and hurling pitch. Speaking after the announcement Sligo GAA’s Irish & Cultural Officer Keith Henry said “It’s a huge honor for the very hard working Scór Committee and indeed all involved in the GAA. Over 2,000 people will be visiting and staying in Sligo Town on both weekends and it will be a boost to local business undoubtedly.” The Knocknarea Arena in IT Sligo was selected as the venue for the competition and it’s not its first All Ireland having hosted the All Ireland Senior Ceili Band finals when the Fleadh Cheoil visited Sligo in 2014 and 2015. Scór is a competition made up of different eight different disciplines; figure dancing, set dancing, instrumental music group, solo

singing, ballad group, recitation/storytelling, stage presentation and a table quiz. Competitors represent their clubs and compete in a County Final first before progressing to a provincial final, bar the table quiz where the county champion goes straight to the All Ireland. The four provincial winners then compete for All Ireland honors. “Scór is stronger in some counties in comparison to other particularly in Ulster where several hundred people would compete within one county alone. In Sligo we’ve pushed hard to increase participation among clubs and it’s a difficult challenge as many don’t give it the same regard as other codes within the GAA. Yet, the All Ireland medal presented is the very same as for winning Sam or Liam and is every bit as hard earned.” Keith said. Sligo hasn’t been without its successes either with several winners going on to make names for themselves in music such as Niamh Farrell and Colm O’Donnell among

some of the All Ireland winners. Most recently the young musicians of Easkey competed for three years in a row at All Ireland level and had the honor of entertaining the crowds at Croke Park in 2015. “Scór offers a great opportunity for clubs to involve people who may not be playing football or hurling as well as keep people involved during the winter months. In addition to the work the Scór committee will undertake in hosting the All Ireland’s we’ll of course be helping and encouraging clubs to participate in Sligo to give us the best chance of having a home participant.” he concluded. The Scór na nÓg All Ireland final (U 17 years) will be held on February 17th and Scór Sinsir (Over 17 years) on April 14th with the county finals taking place about 3 months in advance. For more info contact Scór Committee Members: Keith Henry, Sean Kilgannon, Catherine Gallagher, Hugh Gallagher, Tom Haran, Michelle Kilrehill, Seamus Kilrehill, Gerry O’Connor, Peter Farrell.

RIVER MOY HALF MARATHON

S

ligo AC were well represented at the River Moy Half Marathon in Ballina this morning. Conditions were sunny and dry with a welcome breeze for the 533 participants. The participants ran on roads on either side of the banks of the River Moy with one mile through the picturesque Belleek Woods.

The race was won by former Warriors Run winner Freddy Stukk of Raheny AC in 1:09:35, just ahead of Alan O’Shea from Bantry AC. Emmet Dunleavy made his Half Marathon debut and ran 1:12:44 to take 3rd. Seamus Somers was 5th in 1:16:21 and 1st M40. David Kearins was 15th in 1:24:32 and claimed 1st M45. Well done also to Lucy Brennan who was 3rd Lady overall in a great 1:25:55. A Clear Round For Sports Scholar Kevin 20-year-old Kevin, who’s is a native of Ballygawley in Sligo, produced a clear round aboard Kilarado to win the Dengie six-year-old Championship, which is a jump-off against the clock. “I was in with some very illustrious company, competing against international and grand prix showjumpers,” said a delighted Kevin. The success comes in the middle of a very busy period for Kevin, both inside and outside the showjumping arena, as he is currently in the middle of his first year BA (Honours) in Accounting end of year examinations. “Juggling my academic and showjumping commitments in recent weeks has been challenging but I’m very grateful to IT Sligo’s Sports Scholarship programme,” said Kevin. “Without the Scholarship support, studying full time and competing at this level simply wouldn’t have been possible.” The Balmoral Show event was a double success for Kevin as he rode Libido Van D’hofken, to second place in the same competition. Both horses are owned by Declan McGarry from Carrowmore in Sligo. Kevin’s busy showjumping schedule will continue after his examinations as he takes part in the qualifying competition for this year’s Dublin International Horseshow at the RDS.

Sligo native Kevin Gallagher wins prestigious Showjumping event at Balmoral Show, Wins Dengie six-yearold Championship aboard the Declan McGarry-owned Kilarado First year BA (Hons) Accounting Student is a 2017 recipient of an IT Sligo Sports Scholarship

IT Sligo sports scholarship student Kevin Gallagher secured the most prestigious win of his young equestrian career to date when he won one of the main showjumping titles at the 2017 Balmoral International Show in Lisburn last week.

All-Ireland Track and Field

There was a mammoth 122 event programme in the All-Ireland Track and Field held in Tullamore on Saturday and Sligo AC athletes were amongst the competitors. Mercy College’s Ruth Monaghan impressed at Junior level in the 1200M Walk finishing 6th in 6:04.58. Ruth took almost 23 seconds of last year’s time and, with at least 1 more year in this category, she will fancy her chances of success in the near future. As a measure of her competition, the first 3 all broke the Meet’s record of 5:27:27. Ursuline College’s Eva Delahunt was 6th in the Intermediate Girls 2000M Walk with a good 10:54:81. In the Intermediate Boys 2000M Walk, Summerhill College’s Ryan Roberts was 7th in 10:50:41. Lauren Cadden was unlucky in the Intermediate Girls 200M race with the Ursuline student finishing 4th in 24:92. There was a notable performance also by Summerhill’s Michael Morgan who ran 4:45:92 to finish 7th in the Junior Boys 1500M.

Lough Gill Hospice Swim 2017 is launched

Beetroot Juice in Sports Performance

Article by Aoife Clancy

The Lough Gill Swim will take place on Saturday 12th August this year. This annual swim event was set up in memory of Neil McGarry and is arguably the biggest charity swim in the country. To date â‚Ź120,000 has been raised for The North West Hospice, Sligo Registration is now

open for the 10km Marathon swim, the 1 mile skins (no wetsuit) and relay events. Entry is available on www.loughgillswim.com. The 10km race will start from Parkes Castle and finishing at the back avenue in Doorly Park. This gruelling swim is a real test of swimmers abilities;

mentally and physically with the average swimmer taking 3.5 hours to complete the course. Organisers wish to thank all sponsors and especially the team at Hazelwood House for their generous support of the swim. For more information see www.loughgillswim.com

North Sligo Women In The Fit For Life Series In Grange

Beetroot has been involved in recent studies investigating its effects in increasing stamina and performance in endurance exercise. Dietary nitrate is a substance that can be obtained from beetroot and other vegetables and converted into its biologically active forms nitrite and nitric oxide in the body’s circulation. Nitrate increases the regulation of muscle contraction by increasing two key proteins in the muscle which causes this increase. It has the ability to dilate blood vessels to deliver oxygen to the muscles and therefore reduce the cost of oxygen in exercise allowing them to train for a longer period of time. Some of the studies conducted that have observed positive effects of beetroot consumption include cycling, swimming, running and high intensity training. Beetroot is more concentrated when consumed in the form of juice. The nitrate content is 400mg in 500ml bottle of beetroot juice. One bottle per day may lead to benefits in sports performance by increasing the time to exhaustion. Nitrate in beetroot juice is converted to nitrites in our mouth by the bacteria in our saliva. Benefits are not seen immediately. The best time to consume beetroot juice is 1- 3 hours before training or competition. A good idea is to introduce it to your training schedule and determine what works best for you. A factor that may inhibit the benefits of beetroot juice is the use of mouthwash or toothpaste around the time of consumption due to the elimination of bacteria. Other vegetables that contain high levels of nitrate include spinach, rocket, lettuce, cabbage, rhubarb and Chinese cabbage. In the week before competition you should aim to consume 300600mg of nitrates per day. Call Aoife on 087-1276164 or find her on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/acnutritionandfitness

no one feels alone on their journey to recovery. Sligo Samaritans is part of the wider Samaritan organisation and provide a safe and confidential place for people to talk any time no matter what’s bothering them. These 3 charities are an integral and important support to many individuals across the wider Sligo community in different ways. There is no doubt the contributions will help contribute to this in some small way.
