“EVERY man’s life ends the same way; it is only the details of how he lived and he died that distinguishes one man from another” – the words of Ernest Hemmingway.

T

hese are just some of the thoughts that came to mind last week when the north-west, in tandem with the entire country, paused to reflect and remember, with family and friends, the selfless bravery of the crew of Rescue 116, who died when their helicopter crashed off Blacksod off the Mayo coast just over a year ago. An emotional 4 minute silence was held in Blacksod in memory of the crew on Tuesday night during a candlelit vigil at 12.46am, the time the Irish Coast Guard helicopter came down on that fateful night. Captain Dara Fitzpatrick, Captain Mark Duffy, winchman Ciarán Smith and winch operator Paul Ormsby all lost their lives when Rescue 116 struck Black Rock Island on its way to a refuelling stop at Blacksod. The bodies of Smith and Ormsby were never recovered. Among those remembering the crew was the Coast Guard cycle team that travelled from the Rescue 116 base in Dublin Airport to Blacksod. The Commissioners of Irish Lights vessel, the Granuaile and the LE Niamh of the Naval Service were both anchored off Blacksod from 9.30 am on Wednesday morning. A memorial Mass at St. Brendan’s Church in Aghleam took place at 10 am, concluding with a wreath laying ceremony off Blackrock. The family of the crew passed the wreaths to members of the coast guard and gardaí before the wreaths were transferred to the Granuaile and the LE Niamh. Continued on Page 2

On Sunday 11 March the city was turned Green and Red for the annual St Patrick’s Parade where tens of thousands of people lined the streets to cheer on the parade which is 2.5 miles long. The Parade was led by The Mayo Manchester Tradfest stars, The Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band, who this year are celebrating their 70th anniversary with a tour of Mayo from the 2nd to 8th August as part of the annual Mayo Manchester Tradfest. North-west remembers the bravery of Rescue 116 crew Continued from front page The Irish Coast Guard remembered its lost crew: “Two brave souls were brought home, two remain lost to the sea, but all four will be forever remembered for the sacrifice they made. Our thoughts today are with the families, friends and

colleagues of Dara, Mark, Paul and Ciarán,” It was a timely reminder for all to reflect on the sacrifices made by people and their families in the rescue services. On Tuesday afternoon Ciarán Smith’s wife Martina arrived in Blacksod to complete the mammoth cycle from Dublin in

memory of her husband. Ms Smith said her husband was her inspiration for completing the cycle and bore a poem in his memory on the back of her jersey. It read: "In the fell clutch of circumstance, I have not winced or cried aloud, Under the bludgeoning of chance, My head is bloody but unbowed".

Sunny launch for Enniscrone Golf Club’s Centenary Year

Peggy Diamond Ladies Captain, Sean Brogan Club Captain, Shane Gilhawley President & Beatrice Timlin Lady President.

T

HE sun shone (the weather was positively balmy), the mood was high and the atmosphere celebratory when the flag was raised on Sunday afternoon for the launch of Enniscrone Golf Club’s Centenary celebrations. With so many members dressed in period costume for the occasion it was a truly unique and historic day at the club and, as the evening unfolded, a memorable one as well. While current and past members gathered to celebrate and reminisce, much more will be revealed later in the year with the publishing of an extensive book which will detail the long and colourful history of the club. Indeed, colour was the order of the day which kicked off with the raising of the flag by current presidents, Shane Gilhawley (Men) and Beatrice Timlin (Ladies) and Captains Sean Brogan (Men) and Peggy Diamond (Ladies). Then it was on to the Captain’s Drive in, when the procession, which included vintage cars, made

its way to the start of the course for a unique tee-off. The excitement was gathering momentum as the considerable crowd made their way back to the clubhouse for some speeches, cutting of the Centenary Cake by the Captains, and general

hospitality. Captain Sean Brogan spoke about the historic nature of the occasion and Ladies Captain Peggy Diamond paid tribute to everybody involved. Maura McGrath provided an interesting and sometimes humorous troll through

history, outlining some of the customs and dress habits during the early days after the club’s inception. Apparently, one particular milestone was when ladies were permitted to reveal their ankles (probably to avoid damage to dresses if the going became tough). Ailbe Gannon provided a more comprehensive historical outline of developments in the club over 100 years before the official launch of Centenary Year. Prize for most appropriately dressed female went to Jane Crean while Tommy Geraghty stepped up to take the award for the most suitably attired male on the day. Of course, Sunday was just the beginning. Many other events are in the pipeline for 2018, including a Senior and Junior Scratch Cup on 24th March and, continuing its tradition for hosting major championships, Enniscrone will be the venue for the Irish Women’s Close and Seniors Close in June and July of this year.

Better planning must accompany ‘Status Red’ Weather Warnings - Mac Sharry

F

ianna Fáil TD for Sligo-Leitrim Marc Mac Sharry has called for a more detailed preparatory procedures to deal with the issuing of Red Alert weather warnings. “The increase in the frequency of extreme weather events over recent years with Storm Ophelia, Storm Emma and the recent snow storms has highlighted the need for a more

comprehensive procedure to deal with these events”, said Deputy Mac Sharry. “Clearly the North West did not suffer to the same extent as other parts of the country; however the region was still issued with a status red weather warning. I understand that given the size of this country and the lack of absolute predictability in weather forecasting it is impossible to be area specific. However, this weather warning had a huge impact on the supply chain in the region. “The growing dependency on multiple supermarkets and the centralised supply of perishable food, groceries and other products at just a handful of locations, mainly in the east of the country, left many stores, and consequently families, without certain products. Local familyrun grocery stores were also affected by this centralised model. “Measures must be put in place to ensure that when future weather events are forecast, all regions have access to adequate supplies rather than having to rely on a centralised distribution system. “Equally, the closure of schools, Government Departments and State

Agencies must be streamlined to permit areas which may be unaffected to have the discretion to continue as normal if conditions allow. Employers too, private and public must be issued with clear guidelines in this regard in consultation with worker representative groups. We had confusion during Storm Emma when a HSE memo was issued that employees would have to use annual leave days if they couldn’t make it into work – this direction was later retracted but this situation must be avoided into the future and a proper procedure must be negotiated around such matters. “There can be no doubt our emergency services and community spirit put in a heroic display in the worst hit areas and all deserve great credit. The policy of ‘hoping for the best but planning for the worst’ is prudent but we should be able to put a more workable solution in place. “As Spring takes hold I am calling on the Taoiseach to design and agree clear procedures so that we are better prepared and can show more agility on a community by community basis ahead of the next weather event”.

Much pride in Ballyhaunis with naming of US warship after local hero THERE is an air of pride, particularly among the Gallagher family with the announcement that a

Ballyhaunis man who died in an ambush during the Vietnam War in 1967 is to have a US warship named

after him. Peter Gallagher, brother of Corporal Patrick “Bob” Gallaghe, who grew up in Derrintogher, outside Ballyhaunis and emigrated to the US in 1963, said he was delighted to receive confirmation of this from the US. Bob Gallagher joined the US Marines and was nearing the end of a tour of duty in Vietnam when he was killed in an ambush on 30th March 1967. Just weeks earlier, he was accorded the Navy Cross for bravery, the second highest honour bestowed by the US Military and Navy, for saving the lives of two comrades by throwing himself on a grenade as they fled to safety. The story goes that in the early hours of July 18, 1966, Lance Corporal Gallagher was manning a defensive position near Cam Lo, Vietnam, with three other Marines, when a grenade landed nearby. Gallagher kicked it away. A second grenade fell between two of Gallagher’s comrades. Without hesitation and with no thought to his own safety, he threw himself on it to shield them as they fled to safety. It was an incredible act of

self sacrifice to save the lives of two comrades. A third and fourth grenade had landed and exploded but, miraculously, the one Gallagher was lying on did not. He got up and tossed it into a nearby river where it exploded upon hitting the water’s surface. The petition for his Navy Cross said: ‘through his extraordinary heroism and inspiring valour in the face of almost certain death, he saved his comrades from probable injury and possible loss of life’. He was buried in Ballyhaunis in April 1967, and last Spring, a special Mass of Remembrance was held in St Patrick’s Church to mark the 50th anniversary of his death while a monument was unveiled at the local cemetery in his memory. Relatives and former colleagues have been campaigning for several years to have a US Navy vessel named in his honour and last week the US Navy confirmed that, having reviewed the case, it has been decided to recognise the “exemplary service in defence of the nation” that was undertaken by Corporal Gallagher.

Sligo’s Abbvie recognised as Ireland’s No 1 workplace

The company receiving its award.

A

bbVie, the global biopharmaceutical company with a significant presence in Sligo, has been named Ireland’s No. 1 large workplace. The prestigious accolade was presented at the Great Place to Work Awards in Dublin recently. AbbVie is listed among the Best Large Workplaces in Ireland for the fifth successive year and was placed 3rd on the prestigious list in 2016 and 2017. The company’s first place finish ensures it remains the highest placed employer in the biopharmaceutical/ pharmaceutical industry across all categories. The Great Place to Work Institute audits the policies and practices in place in organisations which enter the assessment in nine key areas. These include employee development, hiring practices, recognition and

communication. It then benchmarks these against other organisations. AbbVie scored highly across all areas at each of its five sites in Dublin, Cork and Sligo. AbbVie delivers world-class discovery, production and supply of critical medicines. The company has a significant footprint in Ireland that is focused on novel and breakthrough therapies for tough-to-treat diseases and unmet medical needs, with a reputation for quality. AbbVie’s Director of HR in Ireland, Caroline McClafferty, who is based in Sligo, said achieving the first position represented a significant improvement on the company’s 2016 and 2017 rankings. “This 1st place ranking demonstrates our collective effort to foster an environment where people can thrive and develop. It’s a tremendous achievement

for the company and a reflection on our employees across our five sites in Ireland who have embraced the AbbVie culture and continue to remain focused on making AbbVie a truly great place to work” she said. Joe Kumor, Site Director, AbbVie Ballytivnan, Sligo said that the result reflected an enormous employee effort and illustrated the focus which has been placed on building a strong culture since the company was formed five years ago. “We are very focused on creating a company culture which reflects our values and aspires to make a remarkable impact on patients’ lives in Ireland and beyond,” he said. Darragh Pattwell, Site Director, Manorhamilton Road added: “Being ranked number #1 company in Ireland underscores the company’s focus on employee development and well-being, our local communities, and our unswerving ambition to be the best at what we do.” The Great Place to Work Institute publishes three different lists annually and presents these at a gala event: the Best Large Workplaces in Ireland (over 301 employees), the Best Medium Workplaces in Ireland (101 to 300 employees), and the Best Small Workplaces in Ireland (20 to 100). Companies are ranked in order on each of these lists primarily on the basis of the confidential input from the employees. Two-thirds of each workplace’s score comes from the results of the Trust Index Employee Survey, with up to one third of the remaining marks based on a thorough assessment by Great Place to Work of a company-wide Culture Audit. AbbVie scored higher in the survey than its large company peer group in key practice areas.

St. Mary’s and musical success are almost synonymous terms – and after over three decades of sell-out shows, it is not hard to see why. Move over Broadway, the Ballina all-girls school on the hill has earned its place in lights with a track record of cleverly reworked classics which are given a new lease of life on the Convent Hall stage. 2018 is no exception with an 80-strong Transition Year cast spear-heading this year’s original script of a popular dance and drama show-stopper. Added to that, a chorus of first year, second year and fifth year students, and you get a small taste of the volume expected on stage – almost 200 voices, talents and faces breathing life into a show that promises colour, music, song, dance and plenty of drama. And while entertainment is the order of the day, there are a few life lessons to be learned along the way – with this modern story addressing the timeless themes of poverty, protest, dance and dreams. A event not to be missed – for “kids” of all ages. Photo by Henry Wills.

Westport man is new Irish Hotels Federation president

Westport hotelier Michael Lennon with his predecessor at IHF, Joe Dolan.

W

estport hotelier Michael Lennon was recently elected President of the Irish Hotels Federation for a two-year term. A fifth generation hotelier with over 25 years’ experience in the hotel sector, Mr Lennon becomes the 37th President of the IHF. The IHF is the leading representative tourism body in Ireland, representing almost 1,000 hotels and guesthouses, which employ over 60,000 people throughout the country. During his term, Mr Lennon, who runs the Westport Woods Hotel with his wife Joanne McEniff, will give priority to addressing the ongoing challenges facing the hotel and guesthouse sector, focusing on ensuring

that the right business environment exists to support the sustained growth of Irish tourism. His key priorities include mitigating the risks posed to the industry from Brexit, tackling the high cost of doing business in Ireland, increased marketing and product development support for tourism, particularly in the regions, and the continued expansion of skills and training support for employees within the tourism and hospitality industry. “Tourism has enjoyed strong growth in recent years. 2017 was a record year for the sector and the signs are promising for 2018. The renewed confidence felt by hoteliers can be seen in the growing numbers employed within the sector with tourism now supporting

over 230,000 jobs, making it Ireland’s largest indigenous employer. It is also reflected in the increased investment taking place in hotels, from refurbishment and expansion to new developments, particularly in the case of Dublin, where it is much needed,” he said. Mr Lennon said he looks forward to working with the Government to ensure tourism remains at the heart of Ireland’s economic policy. “We must work closely together to sustain the growth of the Irish tourism and ensure it realises its full economic and job creation potential,” says Mr Lennon. “Our industry has a proven track record of job creation, having created one in every four new jobs since 2011. Given the right support, Irish tourism has the capacity to generate a further 40,000 new jobs by 2021, which would be of tremendous benefit to the economy.” A native of Co Carlow, Michael Lennon is a graduate of the College of Catering, Cathal Brugha Street. He began his career in Chicago before returning to Ireland, where he initially worked with the Great Southern Hotel Group before joining Brian McEniff Hotels. Together with his wife, Joanne McEniff, they own and runs the Westport Woods Hotel, which they bought over twenty years ago. Michael has been closely involved in the establishment of the Destination Westport marketing group, which has led to substantial public and private partnership investment in the town. He currently serves as a member of the Federation’s National Executive Council and prior to his election was Vice-President.

Castlebar’s concern over decline of Market Square A town’s Market Square is always a location of prime importance. However, in castlebar, there’s a concern that the square is falling apart. A section of the square location has already been sealed off to prevent pedestrians from tripping over. But nothing seems to have happened since the barriers were erected. Now Councillor Michael Kilcoyne wants to know exactly what’s going to

happen to fix the problem of loose paving stones. He will raise his concerns at last week’s meeting of the Castlebar Municipal District. The work was carried out in 2000 after funding was set aside by members of the local town council the previous year. A part 8 motion was required before work proceeded. It was a major improvement on the previous square that was outdated and far from attractive.

Over the past number of years, it has become a focal point for public meetings and gatherings as well as outdoor entertainment. Councillor Kilcoyne said it is important that works get underway as early as possible to repair the damaged section of the square. He said the situation has not been helped by trucks being allowed to access it during casual trading days of Friday and Saturday.

RELAND’S Seafood Development Agency, is rowing in behind Westport woman Joan Mulloy, the first Irish female sailor to compete in the world famous Solitaire du Figaro race. The solo, multi-stage race spans the length of the French coast from the Mediterranean to the North Atlantic Ocean. Fewer than 15% of competitors are female. BIM’s ‘Taste the Atlantic – a Seafood Journey’ trail, co funded by the EU and the Irish Government under the European Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF), is headline partner to the Joan Mulloy – Team Ireland 2018 challenge. The trail, developed in partnership with Fáilte Ireland, is designed to educate people as to how Irish seafood is caught and farmed sustainably along the Wild Atlantic Way. Jim O’Toole, CEO of BIM, explains the rationale behind the sponsorship: “The producers on BIM’s Taste the

Atlantic trail are part of Ireland’s thriving €1.15 billion seafood industry that employs nearly 15,000 people in our coastal communities. “This gastronomy trail ties Irish seafood production into Ireland’s tourism, emphasising the very real synergy between them and boosting them both. Joan grew up working on her father’s mussel farm in Clew Bay and her knowledge of the seafood sector and her clear passion for the sea makes her sailing initiative a great fit for BIM and Irish seafood. I would like to wish Joan the very best of luck as she trains for this extraordinary challenge.” The famously gruelling single handed ‘Le Figaro’ race takes place at the end of August and involves 4 legs, ranging from 2 to 5 days at sea, sailing day and night. Over 40 identical boats will compete. The majority of which are skippered by the best French sailors, who lead the world in single handed

sailing. Joan Mulloy, a native of The Quay, Westport, explains what this challenge means to her. “Being the first Irish female sailor to compete in the famous Solitaire du Figaro is an honour and would not be possible without the support we have received from BIM. This is as competitive as solo sailing gets so it’s going to be an amazing learning experience out there on the racecourse.” Joan will act as a Taste the Atlantic ambassador promoting the trail throughout the year, culminating in her appearance at the BIM Seafood Exhibition at the annual SeaFest festival in Galway from the June 29 to July 1. Visitors to this popular marine festival will get the opportunity to get on board Joan’s impressive yacht to see first-hand how she will undertake the Figaro challenge.

Call to restore Leitrim housing estate Like many unfinished estates throughout the country which remain in a poor state after the recent recession, there have been calls to revamp the Lis Cara Estate in Carrick-onShannon, Co. Leitrim. Leitrim Cllr Enda Stenson has proposed that the local council should take over the estate in Carrick-on-Shannon, source funding from central government and totally revamp the area. However, he has been told that the Council does not have charge of the Lis Cara estate. At present the Council is in negotiations with the bondholder for the development and it is hoped that discussions can be concluded in the near future and there won’t be complications. The Council cannot consider taking in charge until the claim against the bond is settled. As the development is not in charge of the Council, it cannot undertake any works at this time.

Sadness as former Boyle store owner dies in collision

THERE has been much sadness in Boyle all week following the news of the death of former Boyle

The

businessman, Fred Perry (84) in a car accident close to his home. Many tributes have been paid to the former

supermarket owner. Mr Perry, who lived on the Carrick Road in Boyle, was fatally injured when the car he was driving left the road and struck a wall around 10am. He was the sole occupant of the car. His body was removed to County Roscommon Hospital where a post mortem took place. Gardaí from Boyle are investigating. Originally from Bunclody, Co Wexford, Mr Perry moved to Boyle in 1953 where he later opened the VG Supermarket on Main Street. Later, he worked on the road as a sales representative having sold his shop. Mr Perry served for over 50 years in various roles with the Golfing Union of Ireland and was President in 1982. He was recently appointed Convenor of the GUI’s Constitution Review Committee and was due to chair a meeting this Wednesday. The larger than life Mr Perry is survived by his wife, Emily and children, Heather, Valerie, Shirley, Olwen and Keith. Removal took place today (Tuesday) to Boyle Church of Ireland for funeral service at 2 pm with burial afterwards in adjoining graveyard.

Could your tidy farm net you a grand?

A new competition is boasting prizes of up to £1,000 for farmers who impress a team of judges with their spotless yards. The ‘Tidy Farmyard Awards’, which are run by NFU Mutual, aim to recognise those who make a special effort to ensure their farmyards are as safe and practical as they can be. What You Need To Do

In order to enter, you need to submit four pictures showing why yours is the tidiest farm in Northern Ireland. Winners will be recognised at county level, with county winners going through to the final. A presentation will take place in May to award the top three place prizes: £1,000 for first place; £500 for second;

£300 for third. Prizes of £100 will also be awarded to each of the remaining finalists. Submissions are already open – so make your farmyard ‘picture perfect’ to be in with a chance of winning £1,000. ‘Safe And Practical’ Maintaining a well-kept farmyard can have a positive impact on

both efficiency and safety. To maximise the chance of your workplace being crowned the ‘Tidiest Farmyard 2018’, bear in mind that the competition judges will be looking at how the design of your farmyard, its general tidiness and the approach you take to health and safety all contribute to making your farm as safe and practical as it can be.

For example, your pictures could show how you: Separate your farm and home; Store machinery and equipment on your farm; Approach signage, warnings and marked routes for deliveries; Fence off dangerous areas. To enter, or to find more information, visit the NFU Mutual website.

Fodder transport subsidy ‘not working, with too much bureaucracy’ The “miniscule” level of applications made to the fodder transport scheme is clear evidence that the scheme is not working, Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) Connacht regional chairman Padraic Joyce has said. “When only two farmers have applied to the scheme – despite obvious and ongoing fodder difficulties on a significant number of farms – it is clear that a rethink is needed and Minister Creed must come forward with a more meaningful scheme to include meal vouchers, which have proven successful in the past during times of fodder shortage,” Joyce said. It was clear from early on that the transport subsidy was not working; there is far too much bureaucracy involved and farmers are forced to jump through too many hoops to access support. “As an example, the lower limit of €100 of a transport subsidy means that smaller farmers will not get into the scheme,” the chairman said. “Fodder shortages will become even more apparent now following the recent storm, as

fodder that would have been available from the south and south-east of the country may be in doubt,” Joyce warned. He said a meal voucher system is the simplest solution to the grave situation, and he urged the minister to act early to properly support affected farmers. Applications It emerged yesterday that only two farmers have lodged applications for the fodder transport subsidy, according to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. “As of this morning [Tuesday, March 6], two completed applications for the fodder transport measure have been received in department offices in Portlaoise,” a department spokesperson said. However, the spokesperson was quick to explain that this was to be expected, adding: This is not unexpected as farmers may be holding off submitting application forms until they receive the required amount of fodder thereby only submitting one declaration form from the co-operative.

TIPS ON AVOIDING VAT TRAPS V

AT can be a tricky area for farmers. In some circumstances, small errors go unnoticed at first. However, if these errors are repeated over time, they can turn into a larger problem and ultimately lead to Revenue interest and penalties. In other cases, farmers forget to claim VAT refunds within the allowed timeframe and consequently lose out on the benefit. In this short article, we share some tips to help you avoid common pitfalls. While this will point you in the right direction, it’s a good idea to ask your accountant to carry out a VAT review and check that you are getting the maximum VAT value from your inputs.

Flat-rate Farmers Ensure that the flat rate addition on sales from 1 January 2017 is 5.4%. Review your VAT reclaims and VATable expenditure to ensure you have reclaimed all you are entitled to. Where you reclaim VAT on capital expenditure on buildings yards, fencing, drainage or fixed plant (VAT 58 refund form) the claim must be submitted within four years of the end of the tax period to which it relates. If you are ceasing to farm, it is important to carefully consider the timing. VAT incurred and reclaimed using the VAT 58 mechanism in 12 months prior to ceasing is repayable to Revenue. Where you completed buildings within 5 years of the sale of your farm or a portion of the farm, you will be liable to VAT on the sale. Make sure you understand your VAT registration obligations. Farmers who

provide agricultural services, for example agricultural contracting, where the turnover exceeds €37,500 in any period of twelve months must register for VAT. This can bring the entire farm business into the VAT net resulting in loss of the flat rate addition and incurring an obligation to charge VAT on all vatable supplies. A flat-rate farmer may be obliged to register for VAT where he/she acquires goods or services from other EU countries, however the registration is ring-fenced to the relevant activity. If you provide racehorse training and turnover from this activity exceeds €375k in any period of twelve months, you must register for VAT. However, the registration is ring-fenced so that other farming activities are not brought into the VAT net. When the proceeds of sale of BPS entitlements in any 12 month period exceed €37,500, the sale is liable to VAT. You must register for VAT and account for VAT on the sale.

Vat registered farmers Ensure you pay and file your returns on time as substantial penalties and interest can be imposed for late filings. Ensure you do not collect the flat rate VAT on your sales. Inform those you sell to that you are registered for VAT. Ensure VAT invoices are issued correctly and that records are retained for a period of six years. Ensure purchases from and supplies to foreign countries are treated correctly for

MORANS Dead Animal Collection

SAME DAY GUARANTEE VAT purposes. Ensure you reclaim VAT on purchases of stock from unregistered farmers, i.e. the flat rate charged to you. VAT must be accounted for on livestock sales at 4.8%. Ensure VAT on purchases is correctly claimed. It’s important to understand the rules of recovery. For example, you cannot reclaim VAT on petrol, food & drink or entertainment. Be aware of the rules regarding VAT on property. If you sell within 20 years of a building being constructed, this could result in a VAT liability. If you choose to register for VAT (election),

you can de-register at any time by notifying Revenue. However, a repayment of VAT recovered may be due. You must carry out a review of the last 36 months and if the VAT reclaimed exceeds VAT paid on sales in that period a payment to Revenue will be due. Recently, we are seeing an increase in Revenue compliance interventions including aspect queries and audits so it makes sense to ensure all is in order. With the correct procedures in place, most VAT errors can be avoided. However, mistakes that go unnoticed can prove costly over time. Consequently, it is advisable to conduct regular VAT reviews of farming operations, particularly if new activity commences.

Top tips for motorists sharing public roads with farm machinery

T

here is set to be an increased volume of farm machinery travelling on public roads in the coming weeks as spring progresses and motorists have been urged to exercise caution. Mayo County Council has appealed to road users to exercise “tolerance” if they are caught behind farm machinery in the coming weeks and to “give farmers a break“. In a recent statement, the county council outlined a number of top tips for motorists to keep in mind when sharing public roads with farm machinery. It called on motorists to reduce their speed immediately after seeing a slow moving vehicle emblem. A car travelling at 80kph can close a 90m gap (the length of a football field) and overtake a tractor moving at 25kph in about four seconds. If a motorist does not begin to slow down as soon as they see a farm vehicle, they might not have time to avoid a collision, it added. Large equipment or a load can block part of the farm machinery operator’s rear-view mirror. Road users are reminded that if they can’t see the driver, the driver may not be able to

see them. Meanwhile, extra caution is required on wet pavements or when mud and debris from tractor tyres are deposited on roadways, creating slippery conditions, according to Mayo County Council. On wet roads, the stopping distance can be increased as much as five times. Meeting Or Overtaking Farm Machinery Motorists are encouraged to yield to wide approaching vehicles, as farm equipment is often wider than a normal traffic lane. Continuing, the council said: “It is illegal and very dangerous to pass farm equipment in a no passing area. The relatively slow speed of farm equipment does not make it safe to pass in situations that are not otherwise lawful. “When passing be extra cautious. Tractors and other equipment maybe wider than they look from behind. Machinery that is half on the road and half on the shoulder may suddenly move completely on the road to avoid hitting obstacles such as mailboxes, road signs and bridges. “Be sure there is adequate distance for you to clear the equipment and

pass safely,” it added. As well as this, the council warned motorists and other road users to make sure the farm machinery is not turning left or right before attempting an overtaking manoeuvre. Due to the size of modern equipment, farm machinery operators often have to make wide turns. Motorists were warned not to assume that equipment is pulling in to the lefthand side of the road to allow it to pass, as the farm machinery could be turning right and may require a wide turning angle. Likewise, sometimes to make a left turn, the driver may have to fade to the right. Mayo County Council asked motorists to be patient, as farm machinery can’t travel at high speeds. It added that most farmers will move to the side of the road to let traffic pass when they are able to do so safely. Concluding, it said: “The next time you find yourself sharing the road with farm equipment, take a moment to appreciate the farmer’s life and be thankful for the food they provide. Making good driving decisions will help get you both safely to your destinations.”

New grant scheme to grow willow as an energy crop on the way?

It is believed that Bord na Mona is working with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to set up a new grant scheme to promote the growing of willow as an energy crop on Irish farms. The news comes amidst an ongoing drive, by Bord na Mona, to increase the supply of Irish-grown biomass. Earlier this morning, AgriLand reported that plans are afoot for all three midlands power stations to burn biomass by 2020 – in a co-fuelling strategy. The company’s own power station at Edenderry is currently co-fuelled with both peat and biomass. The two ESB power stations in the midlands (Lough Ree and West Offaly Power) still exclusively use peat as a fuel. It is believed that plans are in the pipeline, whereby both of these power stations will transition in 2020 to co-fuelling with both peat and biomass. Bord na Mona has apparently conducted an assessment of its future sourcing and supply of peat and “sustainable biomass” for the three power stations. As part of the assessment, the company is believed to have carried out “technical and commercial reviews of all its current and future biomass supplies”. Following the reviews, it is believed that the company has decided that it will not proceed with a proposal to directly develop a US-based biomass pellet plant. Bord na Mona will, instead, proceed with “a broadlybased biomass supply chain – with a clear preference for Irish supplies”. The company does, however, intend for other overseas supplies to supplement Irish supplies in “the short-tomedium term”. In any case, there is a drive to develop a “sustainable” Irish supply chain for energy crops – which has prompted the ongoing work on a grant scheme to promote the growing of willow. Of course, planting grants for energy crops were brought into being many years ago; limited and erratic demand for the resultant produce meant that enthusiasm for growing such crops (on the part of farmers) quickly dissipated. It should be noted that some of these growers ultimately lost money on these endeavours – at that time. Farmers and land-owners will exercise caution this time around – to ensure that there is actually a sustainable market for such crops, be it from Bord na Mona or elsewhere. Biomass is not just about these so-called ‘energy crops’; also bolstering the prospects for a sustainable (Irish) biomass supply chain is the recent Government decision (February 20) to adopt certain proposals from its own forestry programme review. The proposals include improvements in grant and premium rates for broad-leaf species – allowing farmers to plant trees while continuing to graze animals on the same land.

The Drawer Boy

The Ethereal Space

The Hamilton Gallery, Sligo Thursday 5th April - Saturday 28th April Ethereal: Extremely delicate and light in a way that seems not to be of this world. Heavenly or spiritual.‘ethereal, otherworldly visions’ My current body of work focuses on the rural landscapes of the west of Ireland, I am interested in the spaces that are left to the elements, uncultivated land, overgrown and wild but also rich in wildlife. The notion of finding the ethereal elements within these landscapes is my current challenge, and as a painter I am fascinated in the relationship between finding my own solitude within the landscape while also trying to understand the historical meaning of the sublime in landscape painting.

Wed 28 Mar 2018, 8pm €18/16conc. John McDwyer directs Gerry Farrell (An Ordinary Man), Michael Roper (Lovely Leitrim) and Wayne O’Connor (Mauritius) in this beautiful multi award winning Canadian play. A young actor visits a farm in search of material for a play his

company is creating. At the farm, he finds two elderly farmers who have secrets from each other and from the world. Over the course of his visit, these secrets are brought to light in a humorous and moving evening of theatre. Another unmissable Beezneez production and early booking is imperative.

Someone Who'll Watch Over Me Ballina Arts Centre - Friday 23rd & Saturday 24th March, 8pm “We are in a decidedly perilous position, to put it mildly”’ Adam, an American doctor; Edward, an Irish journalist; and Michael, an English academic, have little to unite them beyond being human in the same small space. Yet somehow, together, they determine to ward off madness and forestall despair. Somewhere lurk their unseen captors yet, in the cell, there are stories of adventure and love, there is song and laughter, and even a surge of writing, cocktail-drinking and movie-making. Inspired by the abduction of Brian Keenan taken hostage in Lebanon in the 1980s, Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me is playwright Frank McGuinness’s hymn to the defiant power of the human spirit and the creative imagination. The play is performed by The Decadent Theatre company. "Someone Who’ll Watch Over Me sees Frank McGuinness at the very top of his form, extracting from the depths of the human condition uncrushable determination, passion and compassion, anger and jealousy, spite and fear and lashings of black subversive humour." The Irish Times "Brings its own light touch to grim matters." The New York Times Tickets: €18 / €16. Early booking advised.

The Secret Sisters

Sat 24 Mar 2018, 8pm €18/15 conc/9 u18s Hawks Well Theatre Hailing from Alabama, USA, this singing and songwriting duo, Laura and Lydia Rogers grew up surrounded by music - both at home, and in the local church, where they first sang publicly, learning to harmonise through singing a cappella. Three albums later and opening concerts for stars such as Dylan, Willie Nelson and Paul Simon, The Secret Sisters have appeared on numerous late night television shows such as Late Show with David Letterman, Hootenanny (New Year's Eve 2010), and

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, (March 2012). Very much respected in the industry, the girls have collaborated with Jack White, Elton John (who sang Hank Williams songs with them backstage) and Elvis Costello, to name a few. ‘Their harmonies are a work of art, their grip on their material unerring: If the Andrews Sisters had recorded an album of Carter Family songs during World War II, it would sound just like this.’ (The Washington Post) Now touring their third studio album, You Don't Own Me Anymore, the girls perform at the Hawk’s Well Theatre as part of their current tour.

Move in Sync with Danceblast Friday 27th, Saturday 28th & Sunday 29th April, 8pm Danceblast comes this year to the Arts Centre with Move in Sync. After the success of last year’s sold- out musical, Tracy’s Fame, Danceblast are going to showcase more of their talented students’ material that they have been working on over the past couple of months. This show will be full of surprises and is guaranteed to be a great night’s entertainment for both the young and old. Come along to join in the fun! Tickets: €12 (adults), €7 (children). Early booking advised.

Improve Your Hearing

H

EARING is the ability to perceive sound by detecting vibrations through an organ such as the ear. It is one of the traditional five senses. The inability to hear is called deafness. Most people are prone to loss-of-hearing or getting bad hearing as they get older. Hearing cannot be restored with medicines. In such case, you will need hearing aids to compensate for your lack of hearing. This article will talk about the things you can do to improve your hearing now, while it's still fully functional. Here are five assorted tips and drills you can do to make sure you maintain your hearing ability. Maintenance is Important Avoid loud noises, as these can damage your eardrums. Listening to loud music or with plug-in headphones as opposed to the foam or rubber types that just nestle on your ears is a quick way to lose hearing. Being subjected to incredibly loud, shrill, and irritating noises every day such as power tools in your workplace or road-works are detrimental to your hearing. Avoid them at all cost. Regular EENT (eyes, ears, nose & throat) Check-ups

Add visiting an EENT doctor to your list of bi-annual check-ups alongside your usual ones, like visits to the dentist and general medical check-ups. This helps maintain all your senses, not just hearing. EENTs can give you preventive medications to treat any mild problems you may have with hearing before these worsen. Vitamins and Medication There are four vitamins and medications that have been tested and proven to help in the maintenance of hearing. These haven't been noted to significantly enhance a person's hearing acuity, but they have been known to prevent the deterioration of hearing ability. These four vitamins, with corresponding dosages, are the following: Acetyl-Carnitine (150mg a day), Alpa-Lipoic acid (150 mg a day), Glutathione (50 mg a day), and Coenzyme Q10 (60 mg a day). Sound Source Location Exercise Here is the first drill for sharpening your hearing. This helps your ear's directional sense and requires a partner. Get some small noisemaker like a horn or even a small radio speaker. Go to a large room with very little acoustic bounce off and furniture. If you can do this in an open-air environment so much the better, but you'll look a bit funny to any passer-by so you might

want to find a private spot. Now, the drill is simple. Starting at a regular distance get your partner to sound off small two or three-second bursts around you.

Then just point where the noise came from. Limit your choices initially to the eight compass points (including northeast etc). Later on, vary the drill by having your partner alter the distance at which he sounds off. You should not only name directions, but the approximate distance away from where the noise was made. Noise Filtering Exercise This drill is for filtering sound and it's simple to do also. Tune in to a station that plays a moderately fast music. It shouldn’t be too loud. Then, talk to a friend. Do not raise your voice and carry on a conversation without leaning in to hear-better. Then after a few minutes, add a second radio playing a different music. Then later throw in a third... you get the picture.

This helps you filter out any extraneous noise and improves your ear's ability to pick out only the sounds you want to hear. Keeping Your Ears Clean Bacteria, (known as “wax”) builds up in ears very fast. Although this is the case, a small amount of bacteria is actually good for your ears. It protects the skin of the human ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection from other bacteria, fungi, insects and water. But excess wax can press against the eardrum and/or occlude the external auditory canal and impair hearing. That is why it is essential to use ear-buds or sprays to clean your ears twice or three times a month. Avoid cleaning your ears everyday as this will irritate your ears.
