H
omes are set to be invaded by hoards of pesky visitors as freak weather conditions will mean a bumper season - for INSECTS. A steady stream of black ants scurries busily in and out of a crack in the patio. They’ve been living there quietly for weeks. Perhaps you tried to get rid of them – especially if they were taking sugar from the kitchen or crawling across your bedroom. Perhaps you ignored them, or marvelled at their ability to navigate over apparently featureless paving stones back to their nest. Then we have a spell of warm weather, a summer downpour, and when it stops there are winged explorers erupting from the ground – welcome to flying ant day! The heatwave of recent weeks, along with a lack of wind, has made for perfect conditions for an annual mating ritual as millions of the insects undergo a 'nuptial flight' in search of suitable partners. Zoology professor John Breen, who recently retired from the University of Limerick, said in a recent interview with the Independent that if flying ants were being seen, then the ritual is starting around two weeks early. Millions of the insects usually take to the skies in late July every year, but they are doing so earlier this year. "It's usually around July 20 or later," said Prof Breen. "We're having a balmy summer with low wind for a long time now, so if they're flying, it's about two weeks early." Ant colonies have a single queen, which lives for around three to five years, Prof Breen said. Colonies typically contain between 5,000 and 15,000 workers. The ants commonly seen in gardens and in buildings are workers, all of which are female. Their job is to gather food and help manage the colony, and they only live for around a month. Drumshanbo and Glenade Lough in major new TV Ad

new Failte Ireland TV features some of the gems of Leitrim’s landscape. The special a d for the region featured for the first time on Tuesday morn-
ing, 10th July. It comes in tandem with Fáilte Ireland’s decision to appoint a dedicated head of operations for its newest regional experience brand, Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. It is part of Failte Ire-

land’s domestic marketing campaign for the brand. The TV ad uses a visual style to draw the viewer in and place themselves in the activities and landscape of the area, centred around the idea of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands being ‘Yours to Uncover’. It will feature natural gems across the region, including the hills of Drumshanbo and Glenade Lough in Leitrim as well as Lough Key Forest Park and Cortober in Roscommon, and Lough Ree in Athlone, Westmeath. With a 75% audience reach planned over the coming weeks, the ad premiered on TV3 and will also appear in the breaks for high rating programmes such as The Sunday Game, Coronation Street, Fair City and RTÉ News. In another major milestone for Fáilte Ireland’s newest regional experience brand, the national tourism development authority announced on Tuesday the appointment of Paddy Mathews as its new Head of Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands. Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands covers the ‘heart’ of the country, from Leitrim down to East Clare and extending through Longford, Roscommon, East Galway, as well as parts of Westmeath, Cavan, North Tipperary and Offaly. It complements Fáilte Ireland’s other key brands - the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s Ancient East and Dublin.
Blame the heat for ant invasion Continued from front page The swarms that take to the sky are made up of young virgin queens and males, with queens leaving to form their own nests, hence the 'nuptial flight'. The huge numbers taking flight are needed because so many will be eaten by predators including birds, or will die, so large numbers increase the chance of reproducing. The swarms are timed to coincide with other colonies, and the insects mate on the wing, with queens generally mating with multiple partners. Both fall to the ground after the act. The males' only purpose is to mate with new queens, and they die within a couple of days after serving their purpose. On landing, the queens discarded their wings, generally by biting them off, Prof Breen said, before setting up a new nest. "They fly out and mate. The young queens are bigger than the workers, and bite off their own wings. The males have one role, to mate, and then they die," he said. He said that queens live for between three and five years, but

have been known to live for longer under controlled conditions. "Some of the oldest insects kept in semi-captivity have been queen ants. They mate once in their lives and store sperm. There are documented instances of a queen ant laying eggs in her 24th year. Three, four or five years is more usual." Nests are typically found in lawns, flower beds and underneath stones, but also in cavity walls of properties. Ants perform an important role in nature, turning and aerating the soil, which allows water and oxygen to reach plants. They also eat other insects, while providing a food source for birds.

Q
uay Foroige Ballina has been awarded the prize for Best Smoke Free Generation Message at the Irish Cancer Society X-HALE Youth Awards 2018. The group scooped the award for its short film “Communities Trying to Stop Smoking” which was showcased at the recent event in the Helix in Dublin. Quay Foroige were also the Junior winners of the Tobacco Facts Orienteering Game on the day. Youth Booth @ the Maple Youth Centre, Ballinrobe, also entered a short film to the competition and attended the awards ceremony in the Helix. Over 350 young people from 45 youth and community groups came together to showcase their anti-tobacco films and projects which they created to contribute towards establishing Ireland’s first smoke-free generation. While smoking rates have declined in recent years, a new report published by the HSE and Healthy Ireland revealed that 16% of children aged nine or older have smoked
cigarettes in their lifetime and 6% are classified as current smokers. Of those who smoke, one in two experience irritability or bad temper, one in three reported ‘feeling low’ and one in three reported difficulties in getting to sleep. In addition, schoolchildren who smoke are 12 times more likely to have consumed alcohol in the last month and 39 times more likely to have consumed cannabis in the last month. Donal Buggy, Head of Services at the Irish Cancer Society said: “Thankfully, smoking rates have declined but there’s still a lot more work to do. These findings are extremely worrying. We know that smoking is the biggest preventable cause of cancer in Ireland, responsible for one in three cancers overall and nine in ten lung cancers. But this report shows the additional negative impact that smoking can have on the mental and physical wellbeing of young people in particular.” “We need to look at what Quay Foroige
Ballina, Youth Booth @ the Maple Youth Centre, Ballinrobe, and the rest of the #TheXGeneration are saying. The entries submitted show that young people truly understand the dangers of smoking and the power of the tobacco industry. They people have a vital role to play on the journey to Ireland becoming a tobacco-free country.” Mr. Buggy congratulated Quay Foroige on winning their award and for making a positive impact on their health and that of their peers. They had been recognised at this awards ceremony for exceptional effort in their project. This is the eighth year of the X-HALE programme, a youth smoking prevention initiative of the Irish Cancer Society. The programme aims to de-normalise smoking and encourage young people to drive the movement towards a tobacco free generation.Follow the X-HALE conversation using the #TheXGeneration or visit the Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/XHaleYouthAwards

Peter Maguire opens The Hearing Company in Ballina
P
eter maguire, proprietor of The hearing Company, recently opened his new premises on Pearse street, Ballina and he has been delighted with the response to his new practice. Ballina native, Peter, is an audiologist (MSc, Aud), with vast clinical experience he has found that people are happy to finally have a dedicated practice in audiology by a practitioner with clinical experience and qualifications that has really set The Hearing Clinic apart from the other providers. Peter started in 2007 as an audiological assistant in Nazareth House, Sligo with the HSE. It was there he learned thebasics and grew his passion for audiology.
Peter says “For me audiology is my vocation, I spent several years studying it abroad in University of Manchester. It was very competitive to get on the course, I needed a first class honours in my undergraduate and I had to do an interview. “The course itself was gruelling, we had surgeons teach us not only audiology, balance and paediatric audiology but also the full nervous system, the functions of the brain and the eye. Peter then returned to Ireland and gained some clinical experience with the HSE. He worked in paediatric and adult hearing clinics in Ballina, Castlebar and Stranorlar. It was then that Peter
noticed there was a real gap in the market for a proper hearing facility in Co. Mayo. The public sector had hightly skilled workers and all the diagnostic equipment a service would need, however, they did not have the latest technology when it came to listening devices. The private sector overcharged for hearing services by hearing aid sales people with little or no qualifications. Get your hearing assessed locally in Westport, Ballina or Castlebar by a healthcare professional you can trust. Call our qualified Audiologist Peter Maguire (MSc. Aud) today on 094 9025672 or text 0894831882 to book an appointment.

reland’s two Nobel Laureate festivals – the Happy Days Enniskillen International Beckett Festival (Enniskillen) and Tread Softly W B Yeats (Sligo) – will be undertaking a unique cross-border collaboration from 25 July – 25 August. Three (or more) Billboards Outside Enniskillen & Sligo will see works by the two Nobel Laureates - an extract from The Tower by Yeats and neither by Beckett exhibited on specially commissioned billboards on either side of the border, to be experienced by audiences from their cars travelling at 60mph! Sean Doran, curator of Happy Days Enniskillen International Beckett Festival reveals more about the innovative collaboration between the two festivals: “We are delighted to be working together with the Tread Softly festival this year. Beckett and Yeats are two of Ireland’s four Nobel Laureates and Enniskillen and Sligo are the only two Laureate festivals in Ireland, one south, one north and one hour apart across the border. The collaboration is a very natural one, given that Beckett recognised the genius of Yeats in his own late work. Beckett was a close friend of the artist Jack Yeats, the

poet’s brother and had Jack’s painting, Morning, hanging above his working desk for most of his early working life; this collaboration is our way of marking that artistic connection.” Niall Henry from the Tread Softly festival reveals more about the innovative collaboration between the two events: “There will be six billboards on each side of the border – one side displaying the Beckett prose piece neither, which is very fitting for a border location and the other displaying the last stanza of Yeats’ highly acclaimed long poem The Tower which helped to inspire a short television play by Beckett. The billboards will be located on the road from Belcoo to Enniskillen for the Beckett piece and the road from Blacklion towards Sligo for the Yeats. The Beckett piece will welcome those travelling into Northern Ireland, and the Yeats poem will welcome those drivers coming into the Republic of Ireland, as each travels over the border between Fermanagh and Cavan.” Other highlights of the Happy Days festival programme include Purgatorio: Walking for Waiting for Godot (4-5, 18-19 August), which sees one of Beckett’s most
famous works being performed as a reading in the transnational Marble Arch Caves UNESCO Global Geopark. In this unique production, produced with theatre companies from both sides of the border, half the audience will sit in Northern Ireland and half in the Republic of Ireland. Actors will approach from either side of the border and the set will feature ‘Tree for Waiting for Godot’, created by Turner Prize winner Sir Antony Gormley. The 2018 Beckett Reader in Residence at the festival is stage and screen actor Colin Salmon, while Enniskillen natives Line of Duty star Adrian Dunbar and actor and author Ciaran McMenamin will offer rare readings of some of Beckett’s short prose works at St. Michael’s Crypt (3-5 August). Theatrical performances of Beckett’s work include the powerfully insinuated political drama What Where (2-5 August), The Old Tune (1, 3, 4 and 5 August) exploring two men living on the margins of society and Not I & Pas Moi (4-5 August) in which an unnamed woman, visible only by her mouth, reflects on her life in a torrent of words. Samuel Beckett’s love for music is acknowledged with mezzo soprano Christianna Stottijn performing the traditionally male role of Winterreise (5 August) by Franz Schubert, a French Song Recital with a programme including Ravel and Debussy on 4 August and internationally acclaimed cabaret and vaudeville artist Camille O’Sullivan performing in English and French on 3 August. Tickets for the 6th Happy Days Enniskillen International Beckett Festival are on sale now and can be booked online at www.artsoverborders.com The festival is supported by TS Eliot Foundation and Tourism Northern Ireland, with Fermanagh & Omagh District Council, The Department of Foreign Affairs and Community Partners the Nerve Centre and Ulster University.

State of the Art new digital signage for Knock ahead of Pope’s visit
I
on Solutions, the Irish owned specialist provider of audio-visual solutions to companies nationwide and across the world, has designed and installed a new state of the art digital signage network at Ireland West Airport, Knock in County Mayo. Ireland West Airport, Knock serves as Ireland’s fourth busiest airport, with departures flying to destinations across Ireland, the UK and Europe. The contract between Ion Solutions and Ireland West Airport involved the installation of 25 Flight Information Display Screen (FIDS) monitors and eight 55’’ Christie monitors in a variety of locations around the airport including the main entrance, the restaurant, check-in counters, the arrival area, the baggage collection areas, all departure lounges and areas, boarding gates and security areas. The project consisted of two parts. Firstly, the existing digital signage system in Ireland West Airport was upgraded from Standard Definition to High Definition. Secondly, to further enhance communication, a completely new system of additional signage was installed. This new system included a collection of individual monitors and a 4 x 55” Christie video wall which is used to display tourism information. The successful overhaul of the informa-
tion system will ensure that important content such as flight arrivals, departures, gate numbers, times and delays is shared with travellers in a timely and efficient manner. Adrian Back, Systems Specialist with Ion Solutions, says: “We’re delighted that Ireland West Airport selected Ion Solutions to provide their new digital signage network. The system had to meet a number of critical requirements, most notably that the displays would be able to provide information to travellers as clearly as possible. We’re very much looking forward to working with Ireland West Airport again in the future.” Donal Healy, Head of Marketing & Route Development at Ireland West Airport, says: “Ion Solutions were definitely the right choice for us when we chose to implement a major upgrade of our Flight Information Display screens at the airport. We’re very happy with the final result which provides an enhanced user experience for passengers looking for live flight information at the airport.’’ Ion Solutions is the market leader in the design, supply, installation and integration of audio visual display systems, broadcast television systems, digital video production systems and computer graphics systems, as
well as digital signage and wayfinding solutions. The company was formed earlier this year when sister companies Eurotek Ireland and Avtek Solutions, market leaders in the visual communications sector, amalgamated to operate under a single name. The operation, which is already setting new standards in the global visual communications industry, is 100% Irish owned, headquartered in Sandyford, Dublin and has grown to employ over 70 people. The company has worked on contracts for a range of clients across a variety of sectors including healthcare, broadcast, retail, hospitality and educational facilities as well as corporate venues. Clients include the likes of RTÉ, TV3, TG4, Convention Centre Dublin, Kerry Group, Croke Park Dublin and the SSE Arena Belfast. The Ion Solutions team includes specialists in IT networking, video engineering, design, integration and sales. The company has invested significantly in developing and updating its technological capacity to ensure it can provide excellent products and high-end customer service and technical advice. Sligo’s National Learning Network comes highly recommended
P
atrick Cronin left college after finding it too stressful. After coming to Sligo’s National Learning Network, he now has a job and is going back to IT Sligo in September “Life before the NLN was hard as I had been struggling with my mental health and I also had failed college the summer before. Stress from college and personal issues had built which eventually lead to health problems. I battle with anxiety every day, and through school and college I had good and bad times. When I received my Leaving Cert results I remember feeling so anxious thinking I will never have the points I need for college. I remember opening my results and feeling so overwhelmed with joy when I saw I had gotten 300 plus points. This was more than enough
for me to progress onto college to do a Level 7 Mechanical Engineering course in IT Sligo. I was so happy and excited to leave home and start my life as an adult, everything was perfect at that time. I done really well in my course but the same two subjects started causing me bother and creeping up on me and with the stress and anxiety it all became too much. I had never dealt with this type of stress before and even though I had my friends with me I started to feel alone and that I would never get anywhere in life. Skipping through to failing college, I came back to Sligo not knowing what I was going to do and decided to try getting a job or even a training course. I struggled for months before finally hearing about a place that sounded perfect to me, the
National Learning Network. I had heard from a friend that it was a nice place to go to and unlike other courses, you could start any time of the year as everyone in each course goes at their own pace. I wanted to build myself back up again to get ready for college, no matter what it took to do so, as well as fixing me mental health problems. NLN has a counsellor you can talk to anytime you need to and I then decided to talk to her and figure out what I need to do to help me be at peace and become the person I want to be. After a few months of help from the course tutor and counsellor I began to see what I can achieve when I put my mind to it. I really started to love life in the NLN as I was now progressing further towards the man I want to be with noticeable changes in my life. I done the IT and Office Skills course, which I really loved the course as there was no pressure on time for when a module had to be finished. I also liked the fact you can get one on one help from your tutor unlike in college, this was such a big help for the difficult tasks. I have now progressed onto a job in Mullaney Brothers in Sligo and the course and work experience helped towards getting that job. I am also going back to college in IT Sligo to do a different course that suits me better. NLN helped me achieve goals I thought I’d never reach and I now know I can achieve anything, while also getting out of my comfort zone and being a much happier and positive person. I cannot wait to start college in September as a mature student and progress onto a full time successful job I know I will love. I would highly recommend NLN to people as they have helped me so much, and the people and atmosphere in the centre is great. I honestly feel like I would be lost without the NLN and I feel like more people should know about this wonderful place.”
Planning and investment vital for North West IBEC, the group that represents Irish business, has said that adequate planning and investment is vital for the North West to achieve its economic potential. The call comes as the group meets with the Chargé d’Affairs of the US Embassy, Reece Smyth, today in Donegal Town to outline the challenges facing the region in attracting foreign direct investment. Ahead of the meeting, Ibec North West Regional President and MD Masonite Ireland Cormac Kearns said: “Ireland has acted as a strategic gateway to Europe for US companies for over a century, providing US firms with a home away from home experience including a strong pro-business environment and access to an EU market of over 500 million people. With the Brexit process underway, the ties between the two countries are likely to
deepen in the years ahead with Ireland offering an even more strategic gateway into the EU and EMEA. “However, to capitalise on the opportunities afforded by this relationship, investment in the region is critical. Connectivity, skills development and infrastructure provision must be prioritised, now more than ever, to mitigate the impact of Brexit on the region and strengthen our competitive position.” Terry MacNamara, Ibec North West Regional Director said: “The region needs investment in infrastructure to maintain competitiveness. One of the main challenges for the region is peripherality, with poor accessibility placing the region at a distinct disadvantage in terms of attracting FDI
and economic development. Without this investment, Brexit only stands to accentuate the challenges facing the region. “Investment in the region’s road network will have a major say in the region’s growth and prosperity. Equally, investment in education, particularly higher education, must be regarded as a priority. The region’s economic growth and success is underpinned by highly talented and educated people. “Brexit and competitiveness pressures will be particularly acute for indigenous business. These pressures cannot be ignored when delivering budgetary policy into the future. Budget 2019 must see us make strategic choices by continuing to update our attractiveness as a place to invest or grow a business. Successful businesses are fundamental to a prosperous region”.

T
he McHale family from Belcarra, Castlebar, Co. Mayo are celebrating an amazing 35 years in business this month. They are marking the achievement by hosting a birthday celebration on the 21st of July from 2pm-4pm at McHale Caravans and Marine. Everyone is invited! McHale Caravans and Marine is very much a family affair, the business was established by Gerry and Nuala McHale. Nowadays their two daughters Ruth and Aisling proudly work in the business along with their loyal employees Kevin, Kieran and Gerry. However, 35 years ago the business started with a different intent. Gerry McHale bought a boat to sell, his fatherin-law John Flynn told him to “get rid of it”. Mr. Flynn was under the impression the boat would drown the whole family. Gerry sold the boat under pressure and he bought two caravans out of the money. The two caravans he bought were
both leaking and he had to fix them up. He learnt the hard way about the caravan buying business not to make that mistake again. From then on, the business went from strength to strength. However, the entrepreneur in Gerry didn’t stop there, he then started hiring caravans and selling mobile homes along with all the accessories to go with them. The evolution of McHale Caravans continued as customers started contacting McHales looking for storage units such as porto cabins and steel units. The rest as they say is history for that side of the business. However, Gerry never forgot about the marine side of the business he originally wanted to establish. He took a punt and set up McHale Marine. Today, the business sells all types of marine equipment from boats, engines, sailing equipment, sailing clothing, scuba diving clothing, kayaks, surfboards, paddle boards to mention a few. McHale Marine supplies organisations
such as the Civil Defence, adventure companies and colleges all over Ireland via www.mchalemarine.ie. The caravans, porto cabins and steel unit business is booming and McHales stock can be found throughout the 32 counties. The McHale’s story is one of huge achievement and something the family are very proud of, and now It’s time to celebrate. The McHale Family are inviting, family, neighbours, friends and customers to join them for a celebration on the 21st July 2018 from 2pm-4pm at their premises in Belcarra. They will be joined by members of the RNLI and Civil Defence for a number of demonstrations and lifejacket testing. There will be free food on offer, a live DJ, stalls, a bouncy castle, games for children and a special sale to celebrate their 35 years in business. See you there! A Happy Type of Sadness First book on development of Irish Country music Having grown up in a house filled with American country records, Westport native Kevin Martin developed a wide knowledge and love of country music, but despite a proliferation of homegrown country music programmes on Irish TV he knew very little about how country music had developed in Ireland. The first book of its kind in Ireland, A Happy Type of Sadness: A Journey Through Irish Country Musicexplores the world of Irish country music. A mixture of research, interviews and attendance at numerous happenings and events, the book charts the contribution made by pioneering singers like Larry Cunningham to the development of country music in Ireland, as well as pro-
viding in-depth profiles of the lives and careers of some of Ireland’s biggest country stars, including Daniel O’Donnell, Margo O’Donnell, Susan McCann, Nathan Carter, Philomena Begley and, of course, the ‘king’ of Irish country, Big Tom McBride. Incorporating a wide range of interviews with those who work in all areas of the industry – performers, managers, songwriters, producers and journalists – it also looks at the significant role Irish emigrants played in the development of the music in America and the importance of dancing in the country world. An engaging and accessible look at Irish country music, A Happy Type of Sadness is the perfect tribute to a part of Irish
culture that is too often overlooked. Published by Mercier Press, A Happy Type of Sadness will be available nationwide and online from Wednesday 11 July 2018. RRP€18.99/£15.99. A Happy Type of Sadness: A Journey Through Irish Country Musicwill be officially launched in Matt Molloy’s Backyard Bar on Monday 16 July at 8.00 P.M. The event is open to the public. Kevin Martin taught English, communications and cultural studies for twentyfive years. He is married with two children and lives near Westport, County Mayo. He loves pubs, music, travel and reading. Kevin is also the author of Have Ye No Homes To Go To? The History of the Irish Pub.

Interested participants will also have some tuition in lilting during the week’s singing classes. The very popular singing sessions take place in Murphys’ Hotel again this year on Tuesday and Thursday from 9.30 pm. For beginners and improvers, there will be Junior and Adult ‘Slow Sessions’ led by tutors during the week – childrens’ practice sessions taking place in the library in Teach Laighne after lunch from 2.30 to 4 on Tuesday to Friday, while the adult practice sessions will take place in the meeting room at Teach Laighne on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5 to 7 pm. Nightly concerts and re- citals featuring tutors, local and visiting musicians are a hugely popular part of the summer school and open to everyone to come along and listen to the very best in tra- ditional music and song in an intimate acoustic setting. Pure magic awaits each and every member of our audiences for the week. This year’s Monday night concert in St. Attracta’s Community School is in honour of Fion- nuala, Cian and Caoimhe Kearins. From Collooney, Co Sligo, Fionnuala is a member of the Collis family, renowned musicians far and wide over a long number of years. Fionnuala and her son and daughter Cian and Caoimhe have a long and proud association with the South Sligo Summer School and we are absolutely delighted to honour them at our opening concert this year. Tickets will be available at the door and the concert starts at 8 pm sharp. Come early for what will be a great musical celebration with family and friends. Rounding off the week on Saturday, 21st July, everyone is invited to gather on the Square in
Tubbercurry after lunch at 2 pm for a final Farewell Session. Fingers crossed the sun will shine down on us, as it has been so far during this glorious summer of 2018. Finally, the organising committee of the South Sligo Summer School are very grateful to all the local musicians who give of their time and talent so generous- ly year in year out during the week of the summer school, to the local business community for their financial support and to the people of Tubbercurry and the surrounding areas for their ongoing contribution to the success of the summer school in so many ways. The school could not survive without this local support and it is a testament to the value placed on our traditional music, song and dance here in South
Sligo that we are still to the fore, running a very successful and important event in the traditional music calendar annually since 1987. The South Sligo playing style is unique to our area and something for us all to be proud of and work hard to ensure it flourishes into the future. The number of young people playing music to a high standard in the entire region is indeed living proof of the healthy state of traditional music, song and dance in this modern era of social media and ever expanding technology. For a further details of this year’s programme please check out our website www.sssschool.org or ring 071-9120912. Accommodation list also available on our website or email info@tubbercurry.ie

ootworks is entering its 11th Year in Ballina. Rachel Gallagher started her Practice after studying for her degree in Podiatry, in Edinburgh. Podiatry is a healthcare profession that specialises in the management of disease and disorder of the lower limb and foot. The foot is a highly complex structure, which can develop problems affecting a patient’s overall health and quality of life. A Podiatrist can manage a range of foot health problems from simple nail care, corn & hard skin removal, to more complex treatments like verruca’s, Diabetic foot screening and structural foot issues. Footworks recently moved to the Ballina Medical Centre, after 9 years in the town centre, due to increasing multi-disciplinary engagement with the services there – including the GPs, Practice nurses, Public Health Nursing team and the Mayo Sports Clinic; it became obvious to Rachel that it would be ideal for her business to be within the building. Rachel has spent this past year training to bring in some exciting new equipment to Footworks, including Medical Nail reconstruction, 3D foot scanning for custom Orthotics and most recently a revolutionary new treatment for Verruca’s – Swift. Footworks is the first Podiatry Clinic outside of Dublin to have this Swift machine, as Rachel strives to offer the most up to date service for her patients.
Community visits are a large part of the clinic also, Footworks provides treatment in all the local Nursing Homes, Western Care residences and within Occupational Health in some of Ballina’s largest factories. No.1 Water Lane, Sligo (The Lane Beside Shoot the Crows) • Telephone: 085-7467253
A self taught seamstress and fashionista from a young age, Carol came to Sligo from Surrey twenty five years ago and has turned her hand to many crafts since. Carol can't remember a time when she didn't have an interest in fashion and style. She was never content with what she could find in the shops, however, preferring to unstitch and remake any garment that took her fancy. "I never actually learned how to sew, it just came naturally. To me, it was just common sense." As soon as she began making her signature headpieces and fascinators, Carol was overrun with orders. By sheer force of will and as she describes it "pounding the pavements" she got her pieces into several of the top boutiques around the country, particularly in Northern Ireland. Heads You Win fascinators have made appearances at Buckingham Palace, celebrity wedding, on several TV personality's heads and on several of the Galway Races prize winners over the years. Another note worthy achievement is that she was the only store in Sligo that was asked to take park in the GOK WAN fashion show when he was in Sligo. But Carol is modest about her
success. "The best part of the job is when people send me photographs or a thank you card, or tell me that I made them feel beautiful. It just makes it all worthwhile." Higgins Pharmacy is a renowned family business in Sligo
H
iggins Pharmacy is a renowned family business in Sligo due to the dedicated work of Chris Higgins, who opened the business in 1948. His son Ken and daughters Ann Christine and Stella continued on from Chris, providing an excellent service to their customers. In October 2016, the Higgins family sold their business to twin pharmacists Ann and Deirdre Butler. The Butler sisters, from Ballina in Mayo, were delighted to continue the legacy created by Chris and his family. This is a business that will be in operation for 70 years in January 2018 and has seen generations of families pass through its doors. This is the epitome
of what a family business is and Ann and Deirdre are proud to be at the helm. Since October 2016, Ann and Deirdre have introduced many new services and products. Their first priority was to have an online platform where they could share their pharmaceutical knowledge to help educate their customers. Their website went live in November 2016 and there are interesting blogs on topics like skincare, flu, eczema and fertility. Services introduced by the girls include Diabetes awareness days, cholesterol checks will commence in June and another service initiated is called ‘Lets Get Checked’. This is a check on a woman’s fertility status as the girls feel there should be an increased awareness of infertility in women over 30. They have also introduced new brands to the store in Market Cross, these include Cailyn and Flormar Make Up, Betty and Biddy jewellery, Aluxe sunglasses by Rosie Connolly and trendy bags and scarves all of which have proved successful. Both Ann and Deirdre are also very active in the community where Ann is a member of the local BNI Yeats Chapter and Deirdre has just finished a cycle of 'Going for Growth' which is a female mentorship programme. KELLEY’S – a unique hair experience
W
ALKING into Kelley’s Hair Salon in Diamonds Car Park Ballina is like walking into a haven of beauty, with both the décor and the friendly atmosphere making you feel instantly welcome. The packed chairs of the salon lets you know how popular they are after celebrating 2 years in business learlier this year, and it’s easy to see why as you notice the customers walk out with a smile on their face and a bounce in their step. Kelley Rowland glowingly speaks of her staff as she tells me: “Apart from myself I have five committed staff, whom I could not be without. They are such an amazing team and work so hard. Kelley herself has been hairdressing in Ballina for just over 20 years, and her passion for it shows. “Hairdressing is the type of career you have to love or you would never stick it! There is constant training and learning, especially in the last few years as styles and trends change so much.” Not only do they keep up to date with the latest hair fashions, they have even started to provide training days for 12 to 16 year olds in the hope that if they understand their hair at a young age, they won’t make mistakes with it in years to come. I was interested to find out why Kelley chose this area for her business but it seems picking a location to set up her busy hair salon was an easy choice. “ Ballina has always been good to me. I have only ever worked in Ballina as a hairdresser and have met so many wonderful people through
my job. Opening up our own business really made me appreciate living in Ballina. The people of Ballina and its surrounding area have been so good to me and so supportive, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.” Kelley’s stock a wide range of products, to suit every type of customer such as Alfaparf and Kemon colour, along with an organic colour range called Nayo. They have a new range for hair loss that they use called Nak, and they also stock a vegan organic range known as Alfaparf Actyva, along with the famous Olaplex. We do a full range of Alfaparf treatments to suit all hair types and depending on what your hair needs. I am a big believer in using salon shampoo to suit your hair needs which can restore your hair to its original healthy glow.” Opening hours are from 9am to 6pm Tuesday to Saturday, with late openings on Thursday and Friday til 8 pm. Early openings can be arranged by appointment also. To see some of the hairstyles that the girls have done for their happy customers, just go to @Kelleyshairdressing on Facebook or follow them on Snapchat. Cool Trends That Will Hit Your Kitchen in 2018 Dark Plum
Simple Luxury
Appliance Garages
Dark Plum Another color to watch out for is dramatic purple, according to designer Francesco Bilotto. “You’ll see this tone showcased everywhere from kitchen cabinets to foyers,” he says. We’re partial to the dramatic backsplash in this modern space. Two-Tone Cabinets To add character to the 2017 Kitchen of the Year, San Francisco designer Jon de la Cruzused two finishes on the cabinets: weathered white oak and Farrow & Ball’s Cornforth White paint in Modern Eggshell. “You see that kind of make-do cobbling together in old kitchens,” he says. Appliance Garages Another way to embrace the minimalist trend: smart storage. Here, San Francisco designer Jon de la Cruz created a home in the 2017 Kitchen of the Year for the toaster and coffeemaker to reduce counter clutter. Simple Luxury Appliances can be state-of-theart without completely overwhelming your space. In this updated kitchen, a dreamy lineup of built-in Bosch Benchmark® appliances makes the busy heart of this home both hardworking and good-looking

Laugh out Loud: the healing benefits of laughter A little chuckle goes a long way when it comes to maintaining your health. Body and soul have a laugh and you’ll get happy!
“Laughter is an instant vacation.” When Milton Berle (pictured) said this, he wasn’t too far off, according to some researchers who think laughter is like a wonder drug capable of treating a host of maladies related to stress and lifestyle. “Laughter therapy is making people laugh for healing purposes,” says Albert Nerenberg, a journalist, documentary filmmaker (for instance, Laughlology, in 2009) and laugh-ologist, an expert who lectures on the science, practice and therapeutic effects of laughter. He brings the therapy to the workplace to help relieve stress and increase motivation, and to the health-care profession to promote and maintain health. But he cautions, “Occasionally, you hear wild claims that laughter therapy cures cancer or a terminal illness. The therapy holds great promise, but there is a danger of creating false expectations.” Researchers continue to study laughter’s effects and have made some discoveries on how it benefits our well-being. Brain chemicals From a neurological perspective,
pioneering studies by Dr. Lee Berk and Dr. Stanley Tan of Loma Linda University Medical Center in California have shown that laughing triggers a flood of pleasureinducing neurotransmitters, like dopamine, in the brain. Low levels of both these brain chemicals are associated with the winter blues and Seasonal Affective Disorder, which affects almost 20 per cent of Canadians. Nerenberg has been using laughter therapy to help treat drug addicts at a residential drug rehab centre located near the Quebec-U.S. border. “Laughing produces dopamine in the brain much in the same way as cocaine,” he explains, “so you essentially substitute laughing fits for drug addiction, addicting people to a positive behaviour rather than a negative one. They’re after rushes and really don’t care where they get them.” Immune response A depressed immune system is vulnerable to colds and viruses. According to a 2001 study in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, laughter boosts the activity of your system’s natural killer cells and other defences by increasing the number of antibodyproducing cells. Laughter enhances the response of disease-killing cells such as gamma-interferon, diseasefighting protein; B cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies; and T cells, key to immune system response. Stress response “We once thought laughter was

the opposite of crying, but it’s more appropriate to think of it as the opposite of stress,” explains Nerenberg. He says laughter affects the nervous and endocrine systems by metabolizing stress hormones, which include cortisol and adrenaline, the fight-or-flight compounds released during times of stress. Stress hormones bombard the heart, forcing it to beat as if in a constant state of fight or flight. But laughter appears to reduce the amount of stress hormones your body produces. Blood flow A good laugh can be good for your heart. Laughter helps expand capillaries, increasing blood and oxygen flow throughout your body. This may help protect against heart attacks and strokes by relaxing constricted blood vessels and promoting relaxation, which may lower levels of cortisol, a hormone known to contribute to high blood pressure, as do constricted blood vessels. Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin measured the blood flow of 17 volunteers after watching a comedy or a documentary. The comedy group showed significantly increased heart rate and blood flow of 17 per cent for up to 24 hours. Conversely, among the documentary viewers, blood vessels constricted by 15 per cent. Constricted arteries can lead to high blood pressure. Social benefits Laughing with others is more powerful than laughing alone, so plan some face time with friends. Sharing laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships strong and resilient.
Westport Foot Clinic
Simply anticipating laughter was found to release beneficial hormones while lowering levels of harmful chemicals in the body. Laughter can also stimulate creative thoughts that lead to a greater sense of self-worth and optimism. Speaking of optimism In 2011, Nerenberg worked with Maxwell House on a survey about optimism, and the results are positive. Eighty-five per cent of us consider ourselves optimistic; 86 per cent of us feel that optimism is contagious; and 79 per cent of us try to encourage pessimists to be more optimistic. Encourage your own healthier outlook by adding these simple laughter-inducing habits.
Smile early and often in the day; it produces a mild hormonal change that can improve your mood and produce positive emotions. Smiling is the beginning of laughter and, like laughter, it’s contagious. Look up at the ceiling, and you’ll notice a positive lift. There’s no science to explain this, but it’s a fairly universal phenomenon, says Nerenberg. The opposite is true as well; if you walk around looking down, you’ll start to feel down. Fake it till you feel it Just going through the motions will trigger real laughter. Studies show the positive effects of smiling occur even if the smile is fake; faked laughter also provides the same benefits.

Thanks, John O’Hara The Bonniconlon show is more than just an exhibition of live-stock, farm produce, trade stands and jumping - it is a family orientated event which happens every year on the August Bank Holiday Monday. This “Fashionable Taste of Local” event is just in keeping with the inventive history and theme of the Bonniconlon show. Cafolla’s Ballina celebrate 6 years focussed on their business during the development phase they have also become embedded in the local community, proud to be part of it and grateful to the people who have made them so welcome in the town.
C
AFOLLA’S in Ballina is one of those landmark businesses which has not only endured over the decades but has preserved the Italian legacy started by people like Luigi Orlandi back the ’sixties. Roll on to 2018 and Riccardo and Caterina Veglianti, who acquired the business six years ago, continue the tradition of providing good food and excellent service to the people of Ballina and, in those changing times, many visitors to the town as well. The couple’s hard work over the past six years has borne fruit. They have retained old customers while building up a growing clientele at their premises on Bridge Street, Ballina. Their plans were ambitious but they can look back with satisfaction on six exciting years. Both Riccardo and Caterina have strong catering backgrounds. Riccardo is the second generation of the Veglianti family in the catering, having commenced his career at the age of 13 in the family business. He then moved away for a period, studied electronic engineering at third level and worked for a time in that industry. However, the restaurant business was in his blood and he commenced a career as a chef. Riccardo commenced his training in Florence, came to Ireland and worked in many Irish restaurants. When Cafolla’s came on the market he jumped at the opportunity. Though he had to move from Dublin at the time with Caterina the transition was a

successful one. He was lucky. Caterina, too, comes from a traditional Italian household that nurtured a love of food. Riccardo’s dad had started in the family fish and chip business in 1967, having come from Italy to Ireland to work. He worked hard and now has a number of businesses, including a restaurant in Westport. Regular customers of Cafollas couldn’t help but notice the changing face of the operation – the upgrading of the premises, the ambience, fixtures and fittings, etc. This was necessary, but the investment is now providing dividends and it has enabled the proprietors provide an even better service to clientele. As a couple Caterina and Riccardo work well together, complementing each other in so many ways. Riccardo takes care of the cooking while Caterina manages the operational side – administration, staff training etc. Both have played a hands-on role over the past six years, working diligently to build relationships and raise the general standard of the service they provide for customers. Both are proud to carry on the Cafollas tradition. Said Caterina: “My dad and the Cafollas were of a similar generation and all started working during a similar era in Dublin. They had that work ethic and really worked hard as we do today, making sure everything is fresh and that everything is done right consistently. “We are the same. We only buy in the best of fish, the best flour to make the best batter and the best potatoes to make the best chips – all of which we try to source from local suppliers like Clarke’s Fish Shop. Mark Forbes Butchers, Lundy Foods, Falcon Fruits, Michael Carr and more.” The local associations enable Riccardo access to the freshest ingredients. He prepares his own lasagne, roast beef, pork belly, pepper sauce and pizzas and other foods on-site for his customers. While he believes in innovation he is also attentive to the needs of those customers who prefer the traditional offerings like their renowned bacon and cabbage, tender roast beef and mouth-watering roast lamb, in addition to their much-loved, high-end fast food menu. The couple are also conscious of the contribution of staff to the success of the business. They place a huge emphasis on training their people to the highest of standards and are very proud to get positive feedback on the customer service at Cafolla’s on a regular basis. “Our staff are our ambassadors”, said Riccardo. “If people come in and spend their hard-earned money we have to be sure they are well cared for. The staff represent us, our business and our ideals”, he said. Though Riccardo and Caterina have been
They look forward to the years ahead and building further on that relationship with the community and further expanding the Cafolla brand and its reputation for quality food and service.
