DTS

D
amien Tansey, the founder of Damien Tansey & Associates and latterly of Callan Tansey, has now resigned from Callan Tansey to set up a new law firm in Castle Street, Sligo. The name of the new firm is Damien Tansey Solicitors.
Damien decided on this course of action to focus on those areas of law in respect of which he is recognised locally and nationally to
have an edge as a skilful and tough litigator. He is joined in this new venture by his son, Ciarán Tansey. Ciarán himself comes with a wealth of experience in his own right, having worked in two of the biggest and most prestigious law firms in Ireland for the past 11 years - A&L Goodbody for 8 years and William Fry for the past 3 years. The new firm specialises in Litigation in all its forms, including Personal Injury
Claims*, Medical Negligence*, Dental Negligence, Professional Negligence, Judicial Review, Defamation and Commercial Litigation. The firm also covers Employment Law, Family Law and Corporate/ Commercial Law. The new firm's offices are at Castle Chambers, 5-8 Castle Street, Sligo, which is the first floor above Heatons (fully lift accessible). It also has associate offices in Dublin and New York.

elcome to another issue of Sligo Now. The past month has been a particularly busy one on the social scene here in Sligo. The mayors ball by all accounts was a great night. And so too was the first meet of the season at the racecourse at Cleveragh which attracted fantastic numbers. There were also various fundraisers for the Help Rory Gallagher Walk campaign and this coming month there is a great evening in store at Funny Bones. Check out our entertainment guide for further details. Damien Tansey is not only one of Sligo's best known and most respected solicitors, he is also recognised nationally as an expert in his area of litigation. Joining forces with his son, Ciarán, whose extensive expertise lies in corporate law, they have opened the new law firm, Damien Tansey Solicitors, in Castle Street. The two men speak to Sligo Now about practice, ethos and hard work. This month Zara McDaid speaks to well-known Sligo Ceramicist Ian Carty. Ian is an extremely modest artist who works at his studio at the Rathcormac Craft village which is an exciting craft hub that consist of wood turners, stain glass, jewellery, antiques, pottery and a weekly craft market. In 1975, in a field in Annaghmore, a small gang of flying enthusiasts got together and formed Sligo’s first (and only) Aero Club. Forty years later, Kate Winter meets one of those founder members, Gerry O’Hara, along with his longterm flying companions and fellow members Ben Healy and John Curran, to get just a few of the stories so far. It’s that time of the year again. The days are getting longer, gardens are starting to explode with colour, and RTE Supergarden is back on the television. Award winning Garden designer and RTE Supergarden Mentor Leonie Cornelius talks tv drama, gold at Bloom, and the art of trusting your instinct. Kieran Gorman AKA Perry Blake sits sipping his pint in a local pub in Dromahair, wearing wellies and chatting with some locals. He may have raised a few eyebrows when he first arrived in the village, complete with "a shock of Billy Idol bleach blonde hair" in an old purple Mercedes with number plates reading 'CEX', but these days, he fits in a little better. Kate Winter caught up with him for a chat. Tara O’Farrell is a freelance make-up artist and model. She is a very well known face within Ireland’s fashion and beauty industry, with regular appearances on Xposé. As one of the country’s finest make-up artists, she recently worked with Sex in the City’s Kim Cattrall. Triona O Donnell caught up with her recently at her make-up workshop at Life Hair and Beauty Salon. We also have our usual mix of out and about photos along with what is happening over the coming month. If you know of an event that you would like featured in Sligo Now drop us a line. Till next month...

DAMIEN TANSEY SOLICITORS
amien Tansey is not only one of Sligo's best known and most respected solicitors, he is also recognised nationally as an expert in his area of litigation. Joining forces with his son, Ciarán, whose extensive expertise lies in corporate law, they have opened the new law firm, Damien Tansey Solicitors, in Castle Street. The two men speak to Sligo Now about practice, ethos and hard work.
Tell us how the recently founded Damien Tansey Solicitors came into being here in Castle Street? DT: Well I founded Damien Tansey and Associates in 1980 and grew it into a very big practice, perhaps the biggest in the West of Ireland in 2008. And in 2008 we joined with Callans of Boyle. A confluence of events conspired to create, in my mind, an inevitable decision to resign from the firm that resulted, Callan Tansey, and to instead set up a new one, at the very beginning of this year. CT: And when I heard that Damien was going to found this new firm, I said I was in. I was very keen to bring what I've learned over the past ten or fifteen years in the biggest firms in the country “to the party”, so to speak, and to bring that expertise to Sligo. Was it something you had aspired to over the years, to eventually open a practice together? DT: Any father has an ambition that his sons, if they are in the same profession, would join forces to create a larger force. But in 2008 when the merger with Callans occurred, they weren't interested. I have two sons who are lawyers, Ciarán is the eldest, he was at A&L Goodbody at that stage, and Niall as well, who was with a
large firm called Clifford Chance, one of the biggest in the world in fact. And Niall is currently practicing at that firm’s Hong Kong office. Neither of them in 2008 were interested in coming back. CT: At the time, I was with A&L Goodbody in London, had done a stint with a law firm in Paris and was due to go back to Dublin and there was a vast amount of expertise to be gained along that path. Along the way, I was picking up a lot, and I thought it wisest to remain on that track. But then, of course, you get to a point where you have acquired the expertise, and that expertise becomes mobile.
Ciaran, did it feel like a bit of a shock to the system to come back to Sligo after living and working in capital cities for the past fifteen years? CT: Not really. I've always had a fondness for Sligo, it's where I'm from, where I grew up and went to school. I was here for maybe twenty years before I started working away, so I know it pretty well and have lots of friends here. So it wasn't a chore to come back here. I had been here all along over summers and other holidays, too. And we have court hearings and meetings all the time in Dublin so I'm up and down all the time really, because the court system in Ireland revolves around the capital city.
And what does it mean, in terms of business, for you to be based here in Sligo rather than in the capital or its environs? DT: We get work in our area of specialty from all over the country and we get work not only directly from clients but also from other firms of solicitors who see us as having expertise for example in the field of medical or dental
negligence, and they would refer that type of work to us because of our reputation. Last week I had a lady from Portlaoise, another from Galway and this morning a gentleman from Athlone. Distance is not a deterrent at all, we can go and meet our clients elsewhere also. With social media and computers etc, the interaction between clients and their solicitors and between solicitors and other solicitors and even experts in the UK, Canada and America, is conducted easily and vigorously.
What would you say is the main ethos of your firm? DT: The worth of the claim and the merit of the cause are what's important. In this business you need a lot of strength, a lot of courage. There has to be a sort of fearlessness in your make up and a get up and go approach. A lot of the time, we are pitted against large institutions and given that circumstance ninety per cent of people might back off at the prospect at having to take on a Golliath in the arena of the courtroom. Whereas with us, that's part of the attraction, that's part of what motivates us! We are courageous and innovative and able, but never reckless. CT: I would say our ethos is one of representation and giving everyone a chance to tell their story. People come to us with wrongs done to them, which shouldn't happen at all. We live in a society where correct conduct is important and people have certain responsibilities that they need to be held to if they take them on, so I guess the message is... that we will provide fearless representation and give people a voice when they need it.
And what's different about your firm? DT: Litigation in all its aspects is my speciality. Medical negligence, dental negligence, professional negligence of all kinds. A very important attribute in this profession is an empathy with clients, an ability to put them at ease. If you are a client of ours, we will do our damnedest for you. If you have a problem when you come in here I can guarantee you that you will feel less troubled leaving here than you did coming in. And an awful lot of lawyers can't offer that. I have clients coming to me after having been with other lawyers... we get an awful lot of work from clients who have gone down the road to some extent with their existing lawyer and a cul de sac has been arrived at whereby they or their lawyer just don't know where to go from here. So they come into us and we put some new order on such things and reconfigure the approach. CT: I come from a corporate law background. Typically here in Sligo, legal practitioners may not have the same experience of complex corporate transactions and arrangements, so this is something I'm bringing that will hopefully differentiate us in that area, to supplement the other areas of law in which we specialise... Every large corporation starts out as a smaller business. Sligo has many examples of perhaps smaller businesses that have the potential to become much larger corporations. Companies like for example Voya and Good4You are leading the charge. Having strong corporate law practitioners available at local level is vital in supporting these types of efforts.

Eating well while eating out
The Fleadh is approaching and with that will be a week of Irish music and festivities that will see Sligo’s street packed with a variety of food and drink vendors. Some will be healthier than others. Regardless of whether you're trying to lose weight, you can eat healthy when dining out, if you know how. So, if you're treating yourself to a meal out or having some street food whilst soaking up the atmosphere, here are some tips to help make it a dining experience that is both tasty and good for you. Keep your eye on portion size: Many fast food and restaurant meals deliver enough food for several meals in the disguise of a single portion so try to be mindful when that plate or portion arrives.
by Deborah Sherlock
Focus on grilled or roasted lean meats: Avoid fried and breaded items such as breaded chicken fillets. Choose chicken breast, lean ham, or lean roast beef and grilled burgers instead.
Pay attention to the descriptions on the menu: Dishes labelled deep-fried, pan-fried, battered, breaded, creamy and crispy are usually high in calories, saturated fats, and salt.
Don’t be afraid to ask for a special order: Many menu items can be made healthier with a few tweaks and substitutions. For example, you can ask to have sauce or dressing on the side or you can request your burger without the bun or wholegrain bread for your sandwich. Don't assume that healthysounding dishes are always your best option:
For example, many fast food salads are a diet disaster, smothered in high-fat dressing.
Be careful when it comes to dressings and condiments: When choosing items, be aware of calorie and fat packed salad dressings, spreads and sauces. Mayonnaise and oil based sauces in particular add a lot of calories. Try having your sandwich without mayonnaise or use a light alternative if possible. Be wise about drink choices: Soft drinks are a huge source
of hidden calories and sugar. Don’t be fooled by concentrated fruit juices, which add calories and sugar without much in the way of nutrients. Stick to low calorie mixers or water and a slice of fresh lime or lemon. A healthy lifestyle is all about balance so enjoy the celebrations and if eating in or out try to make the healthier choices!! Tasty tip: Try infusing your water with refreshing flavours like fresh mint leaves or slices of cucumber or lemon to refresh and hydrate after the night before!

ZARA MCDAID
Ian Carty - Ceramicist Have you always had an interest in Ceramics? “Yes absolutely! I have always been interested in art and in 1998 I started working for Michael Kennedy ceramics where I learned to fire kilns and glaze pottery, and in 2001 Michael sent me to Thomastown pottery skills course in Kilkenny to learn to throw on the Potters wheel” Ian explains.
T
his month I speak to wellknown Sligo Ceramicist Ian Carty. Ian is an extremely modest artist who works at his studio at the Rathcormac Craft village which is an exciting craft hub that consist of wood turners, stain glass, jewellery, antiques, pottery and a weekly craft market. It is evident that Sligo’s beautiful beaches, waterfalls and landscape provide a constant source of inspiration in Ian’s work... Despite being a modest and humble man, Ian’s talent speaks for itself and he has
won many awards such as being a highly commended artist at ‘Best Products Awards’ in 2014 and a number of Ian’s products were selected for a special presentation area for the best of Irish designed products throughout the show and are special reference points for buyers. Ian showcases his work nationwide in crafts shops and galleries and he also exports work to galleries in the USA. Ian is very busy creating new work and all of his new work will be available to buy at Gallery 6 in market cross, Sligo.
May 2015 • Sligo Now Magazine • Page 16
Being a ceramicist are there any techniques that you like to experiment with in your work? “I use a specialized technique of carbon stencilling on a
polished prepared ceramic surface giving a marble like exterior surface by infusing peat and horse hair to the surface along with various oxides each vessel is Raku fired in a rush of excitement and activity each piece is a one of a kind work of Fine Art never to be duplicated again” says the artist. Do you pursue any particular themes in your work? “As an artist the themes I choose reflect an understanding of nature and its beauty while drawing inspiration from the wild landscapes of the rugged northwest coast line of Sligo
which is a constant source of inspiration in my work. My work is constantly changing, as artists I feel we should never seek perfection. In fact perfection is a state of being without flaws, if we were flawless or complete, we would be unable to progress or change” he explains. You have created a lot of extremely interesting work throughout the years, each piece different in its own way but do you have a favourite piece? “So far my favourite piece is the dragon vases I spent months trying to develop this finish and one day I made a happy mistake and got it working right, it goes to show don’t give up as results happen when you least expect them to. The texture looks like dragons skin or
reptile like later this year I will use this process to make a framed sculpture of a dragon.” says the artist”
Do you have any upcoming exhibitions? “Right now I am working on a number of new pieces including wall art and sculpture. I quite like the wall art pieces, most of this work will be shipped out to Florida to a gallery in Sarasota which is located on the southwestern coast of the USA the area is renowned for its arts and cultural amenities. From June all of my new work will be available to buy from ‘Gallery 6’ in Sligo” Ian explains. Outside of the studio what do you like to do to relax? “I love getting out and about taking time to explore
Benbulben and Glencar. There are so many hidden places that are quite magical and that reminds me of the old stories we were told as kids, we are very lucky here with the beautiful beaches, mountains and forest walks we have on our doorstep. Sligo is not short of inspiration” says the artist.
What are your greatest achievements to date in your career? “I am excited that I am currently exhibiting work in a gallery in Florida where his work will be sold all year round. I won an award from the Irish Ceramics Awards for some of my larger pieces run by the mill cove gallery in Kenmare. I was also featured in a book called the Best of Irish Ceramics by John Goode, it’s published every three years and features the very best of Irish ceramics in all bookshops and amazon. I featured on RTE TV Craftmaster where they craft council were searching for the next big crafts person to promote Irish Design and for
the past three years my ceramics has made it into the top 5- best products in Ireland at the showcase at the RDS international Trade show” says the artist. Your studio is based at the creative hub at Rathcormac Craft Village. Do you find working alongside artists and crafters inspiring? “Yes, I work from my studio at the Rathcormac craft village in north Sligo where there are a couple of artists studio’s where artists of a wide range of specialisms work. Its great we all know each other well and it really helps to be around creative people” “I also have a gallery space at the studio in Rathcormac where my work can be viewed just recently it has under gone a makeover with nice new plinths and painted walls and floors and in June this year I will be having an opening exhibition launch to kick start the summer which I am looking forward to” he says. A BRIEF ENCOUNTER WITH SLIGO’S UP AND COMING STARS
Lee Munn, O'Neills Rock Club
First off, tell us what is Sligo's only live "Rock Club" offering that's new and exciting? What we're offering is basically a venue for new up and coming local cover and original rock bands to promote themselves and giving any singer songwriters a chance to get themselves out in the public eye. The venue is unique in the sense your literally standing in amongst the band feeling every note and symbol crash with a smooth rockin' vibe. We also offer promotions on the night to help make it affordable for all.
O'Neills was a well established student bar prior to this re-vamp, how has that transition been? The transition as been steady and on the up. We have a regular crew of locals during the week. And t the weekends we also have the support of local musicians and music lovers helping promote the gigs by word of mouth and simply by coming to see and enjoy the music. To anyone who hasn't visited the place yet, pop the head in for a look.
Isn't Rock 'n' Roll dead? Rock n Roll lives in us all. In my opinion, the rifts and grooves, and the structure of rock n roll exists in a lot of genres of
music, being the backbone to most. From young to old, try not to automatically whistle to that infectious anthem while your foot taps unknown to yourself. "Music is a universal language " It's a sweet healthy addiction we can all enjoy...Rock n Roll is immortal! What have been the stand out best gigs so far? Each gig has been a stand out gig in its own unique way. All bands have rocked out passionately singing and playing for their love of music. So for us, when a band plays from the heart, whether it's to 30 or 300, it's a stand out gig. Don't ya just love watching bands enjoying what they do?
Any plans to get BIG headliners in? Who would your dream line up be for a special event? We have some big bands in the pipeline, some summer festival music in our large beer garden to come. Lots of fresh new local bands to be released which can only be massive boost for the music scene in Sligo. Our dream line up would be to have all Sligo musicians under one roof mixing and mashing up, playing off the cuff together. Could take a few days to finish though, because there's so much talent in the town. How can Sligo's fans of rock music support this venture? Anyone with a love of music and rock can support us, simply by coming and spreading the word of acts that may be playing. Also by supporting Sligo bands wherever they play, because without that support it's hard for bands to keep going .

arrying on from last month’s edition of Sligo Now there seems to be lots of interest in all my favourite beauty buys so these are a few more of your questions answered. Make sure to keep all your questions coming and if I don’t answer them in my column I will reply to you via e-mail.
Q. How do I achieve the look of fresh dewy looking skin? Lisa I love the dewy complexion and there are many products that can help you achieve this but the key to fresh dewy skin is hydration. So start by increasing your intake of water and then implement a really good skin care routine. Exfoliate once a week and use a hydration mask and good moisturiser and hydrating serum. Mix Charlotte Tilbury Wonder glow or Mac strobe cream with your foundation to give that bright dewy look all over. Remember that a light consistency foundation or a tinted moisturise will give a better effect. Highlight the upper cheek bones, under the highest point of the brows and down the bridge of your nose to finish the look. Q. What is your favourite foundation? - Aimee Armani Luminous Silk all the way. It’s a light to medium coverage foundation and I use it on myself and for all my clients. I love the way it beautifully enhances the skin rather than masking it and they have a really wide range of shades suitable for all skin tones.

pril opened with a four night run by one of the most talented youth theatre groups on the entire island of Ireland, Sligo Youth Theatre and their production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The reviews were glowing, praise was heaped upon the young actors and all was deserved for this rowdy, rambunctious, steampunk version of a classic comedy. Do try to catch them in action next time they present a play, you will doubtless be blown away... On Easter Saturday, the pubs were full of thirsty folk after the trauma of Good Friday seeing not a drop of drink on sale. Biggest bash was those legendary boys, Oddsocks Revival playing at Fifth On Teeling to a delirious reception. Oddsocks don’t gig all that regularly in hometown Sligo, creating a sense of desperate need and delight from their fans when they do pop up for a cracker! Catch them next time and you’ll see why... A tip of the hat too, to the Garavogue, where Adam’s Locker entertained a heaving mass of stag and hen parties on Easter Saturday too - Sligo is back in business!... Lissadell House hosted a great Family Fun Day Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday,
drawing huge crowds to romp through the beautiful grounds in search of loads of prizes and get marvellously muddy along the way. The gates officially open once more for tourist season on May 1st and as always, there are whispers of another epic outdoor concert coming soon... Spike Sligo, multi-disciplinary namesakes of Spike Milligan, threw a helluva knees up for the inaugural Bright Side of Life Festival, with exceptional comedy and jazz talent taking over some of the premier venues on town. Shenanigans, Tricky’s McGarrigles, The Hawkswell, The Swagman and official festival club for the five days of events, Fifth On Teeling hosted big name acts like Abandoman, Richard Herring, The Lords Of Strut, The David Lyttle Band, Nick Pyne and Kate Daisy and so many more, both local and international. There were aching faces and sore sides abounding for the duration of the festival, which in association with Rennafix group had a strong emphasis on mental health too. And laughter certainly is the best medicine. Irish acts that will certainly return after their warm reception here in Sligo and who surely shouldn’t be missed when they do, include
May 2015 • Sligo Now Magazine • Page 28
the adorable Helen McNulty, cheeky Niamh Marron, manic madman Aindrias De Staic and the stunningly skilled hip-hop improv act, Abandoman who were without doubt the stand out gig of the entire festival... Another special Sligo festival is the annual arts and music extravaganza that is The Cairde Festival, kicking off this summer. The nowfamous fundraiser that is the Cairde Big Auction in The Glasshouse went off with all the bargainous style and substance that we’ve come to expect, raising much needed funds for the fabulous festival to come later in the year let’s just hope the weather holds till then!... Irish music legend, Luca Bloom brought his band venture, O’Sahara to Barry’s (the music venue he once referred to as ‘The Source’) on Friday 17th, as part of their current Irish tour. Innovative, unique and very special, performing their own very specific brand of “Limestone Desert Blues” this gig was yet another coup for this famous Grange pub... Attention Bebe, the big band, skatastic, bombastic 90’s-loving assembly of brass and buckets of attitude returned to Fifth On Teeling the following night, for a completely different
vibe. With everyone on the dance floor, singing along to songs from an era in which they didn’t sound as good as they do now, a night with this motley crew is always sweaty, supreme fun... The official launch of the Sligo Says YES campaign was a fun, music-filled celebration, with our very own samba drummers, Samboiere opening affairs, several emotive speakers and a smattering of local talent on show. Whichever way you are voting in the upcoming referendum, this event was one to prove that political issues can bring people together in a joyful way, rather than tearing them apart... Miles Graham pulled together another spectacular night of original songwriters showing off their skills at Songlines on Thurs 23rd, this time a one-off special event in aid of Strand celtic FC. Hosted by the always fabulous MC Cathy Jordan, and appreciated by a warm and enthusiastic crowd, performers such as Sarah Crummy, Rackhouse Pilfer, Dean Mahon and Glen Cal demonstrated what they do best in original music... A spectacular night of
burlesque naughtiness at Fifth On Teeling, when The Dirty Circus came to town. Feathers flew, comedy crackled and fishnets were a staple as enthusiasts of the cheeky, flirty and fun gathered to dance the night away in a timelessly saucy fashion... Inni K launched her album towards the end of the month in The Model, captivating an intimate audience with her wonderfully constructed, bi-lingual croonings and rhythmic lyrical journeys. Support from The BQ Trio was equally wonderful; without any amplification, this quirky trio of four (and sometimes five) held sway with perfect harmonies and featherlight touches of fingers on strings, along with incongruous but somehow perfectly placed comic interludes. One of the only gigs I have attended in a very long time where the respect in the room was palpable - you could have heard a pin drop... Look out Sligo, there’s a new residency in town! With Rackhouse departed of a Monday night in McGarrigles, Tricky has been on the lookout for a replacement institution, and he may well have found it with the new ska/reggae ensemble evening, Skanking Mondays. On the cutting edge of music trends right now, ska is truly having a moment. Pop in for a look any Monday to check it out for yourself.

@ The Hawkswell - Supported by Niall Connolly Sat 16 May, 8pm / €20 Beneath and beyond the beautifully understated, uncomplicated and uncluttered production on “By the Rule”, Flannery’s songs usher us into a world which is by times emotional, romantic, dark, insightful and hopeful. Listen back to Mick Flannery on Sunday With Miriam “In the end of the day and the heel of the hunt, you’re left with the songs. Everything else comes and goes – the shows and the tours and the applause and the acclaim which goes with them, the prattle and the palaver which accompany an album release. Everything else fades out of view. Everything else doesn’t matter in the long run. But the songs remain. The songs you write on your own stick around. They’re going to be here for many years to come so they deserve to be treated with due care and utmost respect in the creation process.” Mick Flannery realised this a long time ago. He also realised that songwriting was the best part of this strange job of being a jobbinggigging-talking-singing musician. “It’s never a chore”, Flannery says about the craft. “The creation is the nicest part, it’s something you always have and you can use it to work through stuff that’s in your head. You have to take it seriously if it’s going to be any good. It’s always my favourite thing, like putting Lego blocks together. You can make a lot of things with Lego.” You can make an album like “By the Rule”, for instance. It’s Flannery’s fourth album but it’s a world on from anything he has put his name to before now.
Old Hannah and Guests @ the model 9th May €10 / U18s €5 Old Hannah return to The Model to launch their eagerly-anticipated second EP, Iron and Wood. “A sublime band who straddle folk, country, roots, bluegrass, and more” (Irish Times), Old Hannah have gone from strength to strength over the last year, with their first EP Irish Boys winning over audiences in Ireland and abroad. Fans know them best for their unique blend of Irish and American musical traditions, captivating songwriting, and harmonies to die for. This chance to hear them debut their new material on home turf is an opportunity not to be missed.
It’s October 1978. Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and Pat Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town. The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows Pat as he walks the five miles from his white cottage to town and back again. He meets unforgettable characters along the way, including water diviner Huby Patterson, GAA enthusiast extraordinaire Kitsy Rainey, big voiced Casimir Marshall, an array of farmers all named Gilmartin and Kemp, a man whose idea of a good time is to direct traffic wherever he may find it. Pat may be an aging man but he has a boundless enthusiasm for life. Hilariously funny, tender and at times downright daft, The Man in The woman’s Shoes, will leave you uplifted and in love with life again. "I think none of us is old, me heart has never been old ..." The Man in the Woman's Shoes was written by and stars Mikel Murfi. It was originally commissioned by the Hawk's Well Theatre in Sligo with Sligo County Council Arts Service for the Bealtaine Festival in 2012 and last year toured to venues around Ireland. It won the Stewart Parker BBC Radio Drama Award in 2013, was nominated for Best New Play in the Irish Times Theatre Awards 2014 and won a Zebby award (Irish Writers Guild) for best theatre script in 2013.

n 1975, in a field in Annaghmor e, a small gang of flying enthusiasts got together and formed Sligo’s first (and only) Aero Club. Forty years later, Kate Winter meets one of those founder members, Gerry O’Hara, along with his longterm flying companions and fellow members Ben Healy and John Curran, to get just a few of the stories so far. How this club came about is just one of those many stories, told with enthusiasm and the spark of happy memories in each of these men’s eyes. Gerry relates how he trained in Iona in Dublin, before coming closer to home, to Castlebar, to continue his practice. “There were a few people from Sligo flying in Castlebar. After flying we’d get around the bar and have a pint and a chat and some started to say ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have a club in Sligo?’ and that was the seed of it. Then we leased a suitable field in Annaghmore, we bought an old second hand plane and we were set to go. We built a hangar to house the plane and bought an old bus, which we towed out there to be the clubhouse. It was a humble beginning but nonetheless, that’s how we got started.” In fact, it was the grass strip that they created at the site in Strandhill, when they moved from Annaghmore in 1979, that drew the attention of local authorities, particularly after the tragic murder of Lord Mountbatten at Mullaghmore brought the world press flying in to the small strip in force. With the help of Sligo County Council, Sligo Corporation and EEC funding, Sligo Airport was functioning within a few years. It was a great new era for the club, who were very much involved in the project from the start. As Ben Healy tells it, “We’ve always got on very well with the airport side of things. When the airport came in, it all got much more professional. We were delighted, we got a full length, hard-paved runway, lights, air traffic control, a tower, everything we needed.” All three of the gents here to tell tales of their beloved
Aero Club, on this, the fortieth anniversary of its formation, have been passionate about airplanes and flying for as long as they can recall. Gerry was fanatical about building model airplanes as a young boy, shunning the usual antics of his peers to go off for hours alone, learning the physics of flying and marvelling in the magic of making such machines. He went on to become a man whose full-scale machines have been admired and appreciated the world over, and still has bits and pieces of his first ever attempt stored away. Ben just wanted to find his wings from a young age. As he says, “I find it difficult to understand why somebody wouldn’t want to learn to fly”, going on to explain, “It was more of a hobby in our days, it was a recreational thing. Nowadays most people who come to us are either interested in a one-off experience, or they are planning on becoming a professional pilot. It’s changed in that way... I never had aspirations to being a professional pilot or anything like that, it was just something I always wanted to do. It’s a great achievement, it’s different and it’s immensely satisfying.” John Curran, however, did have his heart set on a career in the cockpit, applying for a coveted pilot’s position at Aer Lingus back in the 80s. He just missed the cut, which is not entirely surprising when one considers that back in those days, there were at least ten thousand young men applying for each of those jobs. Instead, John found a way to keep busy in the air in an alternative manner, becoming an instructor. He says, “My abiding memory of flying will always be of the people I have trained. Seeing the look on a sixteen year old’s face when they’ve just landed back from their first solo, there’s nothing like that... and plenty of students who’ve come through this aero club have gone through to other flying schools and on to become pilots with some of the big airlines.” These days the three intrepid Aero Club pilots are dedicated to bringing some fresh blood into the group. The days when it was a common
gentleman’s past-time have unfortunately passed, and as John says, “there aren’t enough young folks coming along and getting involved at the moment, we have an aging cohort down here!”. One way of bringing the younger generation through the doors would perhaps be to re-instate an old institution, the stuff of legends, the huge fly-ins that used to take place around the country. Aircraft enthusiasts from near and far would “fly in” to whatever club was hosting, and spend a fabulous day and evening “kicking tyres, discussing flights, watching the planes, dancing, socialising, eating and drinking”. Ben recalls these days fondly: “For me, the big fly-ins in the 80s were just great. We had maybe forty visiting airplanes and people from all over Europe. Big parties, tremendous enthusiasm, it was wonderful. I remember one big air display that had people lined up all the way up the mountain, thousands of people watching.” Asked if they might host a fly-in for the 40th anniversary celebrations, all that is forthcoming from the three men is a “maybe”, though John does elaborate somewhat cryptically, “Well, maybe the young folk should get involved in the organisation of such a thing...” Among stories of daring maiden flights of handbuilt craft, thrilling crashes and near misses, adrenaline and joy, Gerry gives the perfect explanation of why one would choose to climb into the cockpit of one of these small, pretty, old-school planes and fly high overhead. “There’s something very special about being up in the air looking down at all the fields and the horizon stretching to infinity, the panorama is fantastic. You can see cities far away and little villages look like toytowns below. It’s a lot more picturesque than the reality close up.” And with the potential of taking your first solo flight after only 10 hours of instruction at Sligo Aero Club, one has to agree with Ben. Why wouldn’t you want to learn to fly? Find Sligo Aero Club on Facebook or look up their website at www.sligoaeroclub.com

Award winning Garden designer and RTE Supergarden Mentor Leonie Cornelius talks tv drama, gold at Bloom, and the art of trusting your instinct.
I
t’s that time of the year again. The days are getting longer, gardens are starting to explode with colour, and RTE Supergarden is back on the television. The popular garden show which is in it’s seventh series and follows the journey of five amateur garden designers who have five weeks to create a garden for a real client with a budget of €5000. Competing for the winning garden, their aim is to re-create their space for the Bloom in the Park festival in the Pheonix Park on the June bank holiday weekend and show their garden to 110,000 people. This is my second year to mentor the designers on the show and it is a challenging and yet incredibly rewarding experience. Being on this side of the process is very different to being a contestant and my first brush with the show was in 2012. I had just finished studying garden design in London and was a little unsure of how to best make people
aware of my new design business. After seeing the show mentioned on twitter I made a spur of the moment decision to apply and four days and three interviews later I was accepted and introduced to my clients in Sligo. The journey of creating a Supergarden is a truly personal one. Not only are you trying to create a functional and beautiful garden for a real client, you are also trying to create a garden that will stand up to the Showgarden test. On top of that you have the added strain of having every move filmed which can be incredibly daunting, especially when you make mistakes...and everyone does. It’s your business being showcased to a massive audience on primetime TV! I created a garden for the Flynn family in Tonaphubble and I’ll never forget the process and of course being told I was the winner. For me it was a start into the world of TV
and showgardens, both of which I absolutely love doing. Now as a mentor my aim in the show is really to empower the designers to make the right decisions themselves. There is a fine line between trying to help a designer achieve their design goals and making decisions for them which is not helpful at all. I try and point them in the right directions for their designs and as a mentor I like to think I am in a supportive role. One thing I have learned over the years is that it is easy to lose yourself in the design process and thus make uninformed decisions. It is invaluable for me now more than ever to run things by people I respect and trust. The best way to make a good decision is: do your research, listen to advice from others and then go design with your instinct! From sophisticated permaculture design to strong formal shapes and bold colours, this year sees a fascinating mix of characters
and design styles in the show. Many different approaches shine through in the gardens, highlighting the different tastes and personalities of the designers. I love working with them all and feel privileged to be allowed to be a part of their process to creating something great. The aim is of course to create a well functioning, customised garden that feels beautiful to walk into. It must work for the client and their every day lives and ideally the client becomes a part of the design. The designer will always have challenges and things always go wrong-that’s all part of design-and good television of course! What is really at the core of it all is trying to find that indescribable alchemy of good spatial awareness, strong planting, sympathetic design and unique character. That little bit of magic that makes a garden more than just a garden. Meet the contestants over the page...
Meet the contestants G
Grace McCullen
race works in marketing and her approach to her clients garden is to treat it like a brand. She certainly runs a tight ship and her progress in the first few weeks was astounding! Her garden features a very sweet living Twig-wam which aims to give the homeowner’s kids a little play area out the back of the garden. Grace’s love for nature showed through in our talks and she told me she spends a lot of time out in her own garden and she grows her own food. Grace’s concept is called ‘Serendipity’ and her aim is to create a garden that has many hidden surprises and elements.
T
Floris Wagemaker
his man’s passion is food. Whether making for his own business it or growing it in his own garden, he approaches both with the same attention to detail and dedication. When I first met Floris and heard his ideas for the garden I was fascinated by the idea that this garden would bring the feeling of holidaying to the homeowners. His aim is to create a garden that has flowing terracotta walls, a bounty of edible fruit and herbs and a unique tensile structure. I love the idea of olive trees in this walled garden. A very strong design with a lot of spirit Floris aims to bring little bit of the Mediterranean to Tuam!
Z
Zaneta Olzowy
S
Suzie Cahn
aneta grew up in Poland and now studies Landscape design in Dublin. When I first saw her drawings and ideas I was immediately excited by her concept. Her strong connection to the client and the homeowners interior style is a great starting point for a design. The concept of ‘In Love’ was a very pretty one. I am really looking forward to how she makes this concept come to life through hard landscaping and especially planting!
uzie has a wealth of knowledge in permaculture. In fact, she teaches permaculture to adults. For me it was fascinating to delve into the theories behind this approach to living. Suzie says that her concept is about understanding nature and applying it to anything designed by humans and the last time I saw this garden Suzie was creating fascinating, and beautiful areas (or zones) of interest in the garden, each with it’s own unique characteristics. It sounds like it will be fun filled garden with a very strong concept and beautiful planting.
B
Brian Burke
rian’s garden has an added challenge in it. The homeowners youngest son suffers from spina bifida and the garden has been virtually inaccessible for him in the past. Brian aims to change this and create a garden based around his and the whole family’s needs. One of the exciting things about this garden is the colour choices Brian is making. He is certainly being bold in combining colours and this is a strong representation of the fun family garden that he wants to create.
The winner can be seen Bloom in the Park 2015 is on the Bank holiday weekend 28th of May -1st June. Don’t miss Supergarden every Tuesday on RTE1 at 8.30pm Supergarden is sponsored by Woodies and Cuprinol.

KATE WINTER MEETS PERRY BLAKE ieran Gorman sits sipping his pint in a local pub in Dromahair, wearing wellies and chatting with some locals. He may have raised a few eyebrows when he first arrived in the village, complete with "a shock of Billy Idol bleach blonde hair" in an old purple Mercedes with
number plates reading 'CEX', but these days, he fits in a little better. They know he's a musician, a bit of an enigma, away travelling and recording regularly, but they may not be completely aware of the extent to which Kieran leads a double life. His alter ego, Perry Blake, is a hugely popular artist in France and several other European countries, where he

has enjoyed both commercial success and critical acclaim. From the early days of his career, when some of the biggest players in the music industry engaged in a bidding war to sign the young artist who garnered instant comparisons to legendary pop star David Bowie, through several reinventions and to his most recent endeavours with electronic synth pop, the Perry Blake persona is a million miles from quiet Sligo man, Kieran. And yet, they are one and the same. "It's very odd." He says, of the duality in his life that he has had to grow accustomed to. "Sometimes I wonder, when I've been home a while, if it was all a dream. If that really is my other life. It's peculiar." Perry was first signed to Polydor in the late 90s, after spending several years living and gigging in London and Dublin. Much as he loved the beautiful landscape of his home county of Sligo, during the era he grew up in, there simply wasn't enough glamour to satisfy his artistic soul in the small town, sending him seeking adventure in the city. Having had a passion for music and singing since he was a child, Perry recalls his first memory of the magic of the medium vividly:
"I was in my dad's car, we were like the Brady bunch without the canned laughter, driving along in the family station wagon. I was about five or six and we were close to Mullaghmore and I remember hearing Dionne Warwick's Do You Know The Way To San Jose? playing on the radio and that was just it, for me. It affected me in a way that's hard to explain..."
"One of the most sophisticated and catchy pieces of work that you’ll hear all year." - Dan Hegarty, 2FM on the new ESB Album, Modern Love It was a sudden leap to stardom for the young performer, signing with a big label and flying to the UK to start work on his critically acclaimed first album, and one which he relished. The future was looking bright, with immediately positive responses from UK radio and press and a great buzz building in industry circles. Perry Blake was set to be the next big thing. But, as the fates would have it, this blossoming career
coincided with big shake-ups at the top end of the record companies in charge. Polydor got taken over by Seagram, who in turn got swallowed up by Universal, and everything changed for thousands of artists, including Perry Blake. Without the Polydor machine behind him, the UK and home market became less accessible to the up and coming star, but it became apparent that the moody and melodic stylings of Perry's debut album had piqued interest in France, where he was already garnering quite a cult following. No wonder then that hot new French label, Naive, picked up where Polydor left off and signed the rising star.
“Perry Blake is a musical maverick who is keeping pop safe for thinking people” - Hot Press Second album, "Still Life" further developed Perry's reputation as a force to be reckoned with, spreading his appeal throughout the continent, but barely touching the fringes of the UK and Ireland. Sell out tours, collaborations with huge European stars of stage and screen (such as Carla Brunei and Francoise Hardy) and massive exposure in the media meant that Perry was becoming an icon, recognisable everywhere he went, except at home. He has in the past expressed frustration at the attitudes of some Irish musicians, who at times treated him like "some kind of outsider", despite the fact that he has graced the covers and pages of such recognised international publications as Hot Press, The French Rolling Stone, and The Sunday Times, as well as playing some of the biggest venues in Europe. Leaving the Naive label in 2004, Perry continued with his string of successes, starting his
own label and releasing a new album which achieved the highest yet placing in the French charts, peaking at #5. But his heart was set on developing his craft, continuing to move forwards. The acclaim kept coming, and he endeavoured to keep his work fresh, but it was a challenge. "The last record, in 2006, did very well. It got amazing reviews and I toured it extensively. But I just didn't want to keep repeating myself. A lot of bands keep making the same record over and over - they're good records, but too much of the same thing." And so a long break followed, during which, among other experiments, he recorded an ill-judged (but personally fulfilling) country album. Explaining himself, Perry says good-naturedly, "I accidentally made a country album. I listened to Leonard Cohen doing an interview and he said 'Everyone has to release a country album just once' so I took him seriously and spent a huge amount of money recording this new album. I actually got laughed at by Warner. Considering the French hate country music, it's not really surprising. It was a little foolish, sort of commercial suicide." Dabbling in screenwriting, writing a children's book, developing and composing songs for other artists, experimenting with his abiding love for old school electronic synth pop with his long-term collaborative partner, fellow Sligo man Glenn Garrett, writing his autobiography and keeping the creative fires stoked has kept Perry busy over the past eight years, since he took a step back from the limelight, but earlier this year the time suddenly seemed right to release a new Perry Blake single, Fool. "I wasn't sure I'd ever put out another Perry record. The reaction to Fool has been good, though. It was actually written ten years ago for
somebody else... I found it again about 8 weeks ago, going through some CDs... We re-recorded it, got it mixed in Dublin and it was ready within a week." Bringing some of the fresh, vibrant sound of Electro Sensitive Behaviour (ESB - the synth pop vehicle formed with Garrett in 2012) into the latest single, yet maintaining an essential element of the melancholic darkness of classic Perry Blake, he describes this latest offering as "a good bridge between the two", suggesting there will be further merging down the ESB/Perry Blake road. While he has toured extensively and played gigs in some of the largest and most esteemed venues around Europe, Perry admits he looks forward to having a bit more fun onstage with this, his latest live venture.
"A fine songwriter with a great voice. A little Blake goes a long way." - The Sunday Times "Glen and I started ESB mostly to brush away the cobwebs a bit. With the Perry stuff, it's like doing Hamlet every night. It's very intense and rewarding, but very
draining. I wanted to do something that was a little more fun to show that side of what I'm about." The pair have recently recorded and released an album, Modern Love, which has been receiving great kudos from the likes of Dan Hegarty (2FM) and other musical commentators around the UK and Ireland. They will be playing several festivals nationally over the summer, with plans to release a single in the coming months to whet the appetites of fans of the genre and newcomers alike. As Perry points out, Electro synth pop never really went away since its heyday back in the 80s, merely going somewhat underground for a while. Now it appears the time is right for a revival, with the synth-heavy soundtrack for recent hit Hollywood movie Drive playing a large part in the sudden resurgence. Other plans for the future include finishing the autobiography, which is intriguingly "constructed like a pop song", building on the ESB project, delivering a masterclass in songwriting at The Dock in Carrick On Shannon on the 23rd of May (sponsored by Harnessing Creativity) and potentially even gigging around Sligo at some point. And wouldn't that be a treat?

ara O’Farrell is a freelance make-up artist and model. She is a very well known face within Ireland’s fashion and beauty industry, with regular appearances on Xposé. As one of the country’s finest make-up artists, she recently worked with Sex in the City’s Kim Cattrall. It is no surprise that this talented, beautiful and charming character has a massive following across her social media channels, with regular bookings from brides across the country. I first met Tara at a Wedding Fayre in Sligo Southern Hotel at the start of 2015 and we caught up again recently at her make-up workshop at Life Hair and Beauty Salon. She is approachable, downto-earth and witty and exceptionally great at
Have you a career highlight? How did it feel to get the prestigious booking to do Kim Cattrall’s makeup? “I have done some really cool modelling jobs which have been amazing to be involved in. For make- up probably doing Kim Cattrall’s make-up, while she was in Dublin a couple of weeks ago. I’m such a Sex in the City fan and have probably seen every episode. Samantha was always my favourite character, so I was so excited and couldn’t wait to meet her.” her trade. Her passion for her work is evident. In this month’s issue she shares her impeccable styling tips.
Describe your typical work day. “No two days are the same in my line of work. I’m always out and about - at a different location every day either modelling, doing make up or teaching. What I love about my work is meeting different people every day and having new experiences all of the time. My job never gets boring.” Do you have any upcoming projects? “I have some masterclasses coming up around the country and I’m also involved in Pippa O’Connor’s Fashion Factory, so I’ll be around the country

What was your brief? What products did you use? “Kim knew what she wanted and had a few favourite products that she wanted to use too, so we used a variety of brands and products. She wanted to look natural and didn’t want anything heavy.” Describe your own personal style. “My own personal style is quite casual. I like to feel comfortable. I like to spend money on key pieces i.e. coats, blazers, bags and then team them with jeans and a plain top. I don’t like to have too much going on, just simple and effortless.” Can you give us three styling tips for SS15? 1. Buy a few key pieces and keep everything else simple. 2. Don’t feel like you should be following any
trend just wear what looks good on you. 3. Don’t spend a fortune, forever21, H&M and Penneys have amazing summer clothes that won’t break the bank.
Do you have some favourite Irish labels? “I have been lucky enough to wear some amazing pieces from Irish designers. Lennon Courtney always have amazing pieces every season and are a good price too. I ordered some pieces from Natalie Coleman last week, so I am excited for them to arrive. She is amazing!” Can you name some make-up must haves for summer?
“Stila convertible colours are a real summer staple. My favourite is ‘Gerbera’ . I am loving Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser as it’s nice and light for the warmer weather.” For updates on her upcoming workshops, visit www.taramakeup.com or find Tara on: Instagram: @tara_makeup Facebook: @Tara.Makeup

the first California wine labeled Chardonnay. The 2012 Riva Ranch vintage is mediumbodied with light floral aromas, and flavors of honey and citrus fruit are balanced by vanilla and oak from the oak barrel aging. It leaves the palate with a round mouthfeel and a medium fruity finish.
Terras Gauda 2013 Abadia de San Campio Albariño Rías Baixas, Spain Grown in Galicia, Spain, in the Rías Baixas D.O., this Albariño is clean and crisp with notes of citrus fruit. Unlike many other Albariño wines from the region that develop sweeter flavors of apricot and peach, this wine is fresh and
invigorating with tastes of pear and clementine as well as a hint of anise. It is a great companion for summer days spent outdoors.
Sawtooth 2012 Riesling Snake River Valley, Idaho Made from 98 percent Riesling and 2 percent Muscat Blanc, this wine comes from one of only

& Wine fifteen wineries located in the Snake River Valley AVA, which encompasses much of Idaho and part of Eastern Oregon. It is a strikingly aromatic wine with sweet honey, apricot and peach notes. In the mouth, it tastes of pears, peach and citrus and has a long, crisp, mineral finish.
Château la Gordonne 2013 La Chapelle Gordonne Rosé Provence, France Château la Gordonne was established in 1652 and has been selling its wine since 1850. Made of 80 percent Black Grenache and 20 percent Syrah, this rosé is sustainably grown with no pesticides, and every January, the grass is "mowed" by 2,000 sheep, which in turn naturally enrich the soil. The light pink wine has notes of grapefruit and honeysuckle, while the palate features delicate fresh fruits and roses.
Château Tanunda Grand Barossa 2010 Shiraz Barossa Valley, Australia One of Australia's oldest wine regions, the Barossa Valley is known for its old Shiraz vines, many of which are decades old. Château Tanunda is Australia's
oldest château and the birthplace of the region's wine industry. Their 2010 Shiraz is deep red in color and shows notes of red berry. The palate boasts of ripe fruit with hints of pepper and creamy oak, with well-balanced tannins.
Canoe Ridge Vineyard 2012 The Expedition Merlot Columbia Valley, Washington The Canoe Ridge Vineyard is celebrating twenty years of creating wines from its Horse Heaven Hills home. Their 2012 The Expedition Merlot is perfect for any sort of grilled exotic wild game, such as wild boar or buffalo. On the nose, there are notes of smoky oak and red berry, while the palate displays jammy raspberry and cherry flavors with a smooth creamy finish.
Trumpeter 2012 Malbec Syrah Mendoza, Argentina Trumpeter is one of the many brands owned by Rutini Wines, whose winemaking tradition can be traced back to nineteenth-century Italy. Made of 50 percent Malbec and 50 percent Syrah, this wine is a bold but graceful blend with aromas of ripe red berry, tobacco and

chocolate. It offers flavors of smoky oak and berries with supple tannins and a long finish.
Assembly 2012 Old Vine Zinfandel Lodi, California The Lodi wine region is known for having some of the finest old vine Zinfandel vineyards, and the Assembly 2012 Zinfandel is a foodfriendly wine that plays the perfect companion to grilled meats. It features notes of ripe red berry and wild cherry on the nose, and is round in the mouth with flavors of chewy blackberry and leather.
Villa Rosa Moscato d'Asti Piedmont, Italy Villa Rosa is owned by the Opici family, who have been in the wine industry for over 75 years. Created as a tribute to the late Rose Opici, who was partial to the indigenous Piedmont varietals, their Moscato d'Asti is a sweet, approachable wine that pairs well with dessert. With tiny, delicate bubbles, the wine presents a fresh peach and apricot bouquet that has an energizing finish. It is well-balanced with a good amount of minerality to match its mouthwatering acidity.
t’s true that lamb is one of the most wine-friendly of meats, as at home with red Bordeaux and Rioja as it is with the more fruit driven varietals from the new world. But if you’re looking for a spot-on match it’s worth thinking just how and for how long - you’re going to cook it. And, though you might not have thought about it before, how old it is. 'Baby/milk fed’ lamb A delicacy more popular in Mediterranean countries such as Spain, Italy and south-west France than in Ireland and one that deserves to be paired with fine wines - top quality Bordeaux, burgundy and Rioja, all with a few years' bottle age. (Mature wines go well with this style of lamb) Spring lamb served pink with fresh herbs and/or spring vegetables Cuts like rack of lamb, noisettes and leg of lamb - exactly the sort of dishes you might be thinking about for an Easter feast (unless you’re living in the southern hemisphere, of course). Again, the wines mentioned above will work well but I’ve got a bias in favour of Pinot Noir or cru Beaujolais with this type of dish. Dry rosé, especially vintage rosé Champagne, is also good. Roast lamb served medium-rare to well-done, with garlic or rosemary and/or a winey sauce or gravy The way many households would prepare a leg of lamb for a multi-generational family get-together. This is more robust treatment than the above which would work better with a younger, more fruit-driven wine such as a younger red Bordeaux, Cabernet or Cabernet/Merlot blend, a Rioja reserva, a Chianti
Classico or a northern Rhône red. (The same goes for lamb shanks cooked in red wine.) Slow-roast shoulder of lamb A fattier, more flavourful dish, especially if made with older lamb such as hoggett or mutton. A slightly gamey Rhône or Spanish red such as a Ribera del Duero is a good choice with this. Typically Irish lamb stews and hotpots, shepherd’s pie The characteristic of these types of dishes is their very simple flavours - sweettasting lamb, stock and a few root vegetables with maybe a sprig of thyme or bay. Big tannic reds will overwhelm them - stick to inexpensive country reds such as a Côtes du Rhône Villages. (Or, frankly, a pale ale.) More exotic lamb stews such as tagines or lamb with aubergines Robust, rustic but not overly tannic reds such as Côtes du Roussillon, Languedoc reds and young (crianza) Riojas. Lamb curries such as rogan josh A fruity, slightly porty red such as a Douro red or Zinfandel should work provided the accompanying dishes aren’t too hot. India Pale Ales (IPAs) are also good. Chargrilled/barbecued lamb Depends on the rub or marinade. If it’s spicy you’ll need a wine with some sweet fruit like a Chilean Cabernet, Pinotage or an Australian Shiraz. If it’s marinated, Greekstyle, with lemon and herbs look for a wine with a bit less fruit and a bit more acidity. (Italian reds such as Chianti and Barbera fit this description. Crisp Greek whites like Assyrtiko and strong dry rosés are also enjoyable)

Darkness into Light Sligo
D
Awareness and fundraising event for Pieta House
arkness into Light is now in its seventh year nationally and last year’s event attracted 80,000 participants in 39 locations across Ireland, also extending to London and Sydney. With the number of locations doubling this year, organisers are expecting over 100,000 people to take part. 80 venues will host the event on the island of Ireland and abroad including Australia, Canada, England, Scotland and the USA. It is Sligo Town's third year hosting Darkness into Light which takes place on Saturday Morning 9th May at 4:15AM starting from St Mary’s Sligo, sponsored by Electric Ireland. This is a unique, early morning experience which begins in darkness at 4.15am as thousands of people walk or run a 5km route while dawn is breaking. The theme of this years
event is CONNECTION, participants and volunteers are encouraged to connect with others doing the walk, chat to the person walking near you so no one is walking alone and of course meeting up with everyone at the end where the tea and chat will be flowing! So arise and go there and experience this exciting event one for individuals, families and friends of all age groups to get involved and experience the unique atmosphere of CONNECTION, companionship, camaraderie and emotion in celebrating life! Last year Darkness into Light Sligo raised €23,500 for Pieta House, and those funds will stay in the North West to continue the invaluable work of Pieta House. Sligo’s DiL walk Chairman Kevin Molloy thanked all those who have contributed to the
event over the past few years, and said that it looks at this stage that we will surpass last year attendance of 1, 000+. Kevin therefore encouraged people to register early for this year’s event. Kevin also thanked the hard working local DIL committee, community groups and the contribution of so many local businesses without whom this event would not be the success it is. Sligo's Darkness into Light event is taking registrations now. Online registration and further details are available now at www.darknessintolight.ie. Choose the right shampoo Look for a good-quality shampoo, preferably which is free of sulphate and paraben. Pick a shampoo that suits your hair type and is mild on your scalp. Focus on cleansing the scalp first by gently rubbing in circular motions with your finger tips. Don’t rub too much shampoo on your ends as it can cause dryness and splitends.
Brushing basics Brush your hair in the morning as brushing helps remove dust, dirt and loose scales. It also stimulates the blood supply and distributes sebum along the hair shaft. Always start at the ends and gently work your way towards the roots. Brush your hair before hitting the bed too. Avoid combing your hair when wet as it can lead to breakage.
Use a conditioner Always apply a conditioner after shampooing your hair. Make sure you apply the product only on your hair ends and not the scalp. You could use a wide-tooth comb to work the conditioner through as this give better coverage. Use a creamy formula for shiny & smooth locks. Invest in a good haircut It’s always a good idea to invest in a fine haircut. Opt for a cut that is easy to manage and style. The ‘wash and wear’ styles work best if you’re busy and always on the move. Eat right Don’t tie your hair too tight especially when it is wet as this could cause your hair to break and split. Eat foods that are rich in zinc and essential

egime for Beautiful Hair fatty acids. Diet plays an important role in maintaining healthy hair. Also, don’t overstyle as it could damage your hair and make it dry.
Secrets of Healthy, Beautiful, Easy-to-manage Hair For the majority of people, there are plenty of things you can do to protect, nourish and enjoy your hair. Below are the top ten secrets of beautiful hair: Trim your hair at least every 6-8 weeks (more often if your hair is short). Damage to your hair is usually from the ends and the only long-term solution to split ends is to remove them. Also, hairs grow at different rates, so haircuts will keep your hair healthy and your style balanced. Work with your hairdresser to determine the shampoo and conditioner best suited to your hair and scalp and avoid washing your hair every day. Shampooing every third day is ideal for most people as the natural oil that your scalp produces is nature’s way to condition your hair. When shampooing your hair at home, massage your scalp gently to boost your circulation and improve overall hair health. Use cooler water, which will keep your hair’s cuticle closed. Let your hair dry naturally when possible and rather than rubbing your hair dry; blot your hair to remove most of the water. If you have longer hair use a wide-tooth comb to gently comb out any tangles and never use a brush on wet hair. Avoid using hair-dryers, flat
irons or curling irons when possible and always use a thermal protectant when you do use these tools. If you use a round brush to style your hair, a natural boar bristle brush is best and it will help straighten your hair and add shine. Use styling products designed for your hair type to address your needs. Your hairdresser can help you with this. Avoid heat and prolonged exposure to sunlight, sea water or swimming pools, as each is harmful to your hair. If you are regularly in the sun or the pool, use protective products prior to each. You don’t need to avoid hair colour or highlights, but have your hair coloured by specialists to give you the look you desire without unduly damaging your hair. Above all, find a stylist you trust and check in regularly to have your hair trimmed and to discuss your changing needs. And enjoy your beautiful hair!

Follow Kate on Twitter @katicut Budgets. I never liked the damn things. But since becoming a free woman, kicking the day job to the curb and embarking on my freelance career, it’s a skill I’ve had to acquire. Or rather, begin to attempt to try to learn about just a little bit. I haven’t really got the hang of it yet, which is causing lots of trouble with numbers and minus signs and dates and the rest. But sure, it’ll be grand... After a rather busy and productive month of March, I decided I needed a little break. A holiday that I could absolutely NOT afford. So I wrangled a deal with myself (A nice long conversation with my higher and baser selves, where the instantgratification monkey won out by screaming incessantly “BUT I WANT TO!” in the face of any rational argument) whereby I would escape Ireland for a few days of sunshine. Thankfully, I have a friend who lives in Spain, so my accommodation was sorted. Though I was wary of exactly what kind of accommodation, especially when he mentioned spraying a sleeping bag with some Lynx Africa by way of hospitality. Beggars can’t be choosers, eh? With several cheap planes, trains and automobiles readily available online I was able to navigate my way from Sligo in the dead of night to Granada in the bleary hours of mid-morning relatively cheaply. Day one was mostly travelling. And so was day five. But in the middle, I had a potential three days of doing absolutely nothing, which is exactly what I wanted. And as I asked myself en route, several times, when the bouncy, springy zeroes in my bank balance flashed before my insomniac eyes: How expensive can it be, to do nothing in Spain? Upon arrival I was deliriously happy to discover that rather than being on a couch in the communal room of an Erasmus student flat, I actually had my own bedroom, with a small, comfy bed and even a little balcony. Go budget! I had to express my gratitude by buying dinner. And after a few glasses of sangria generosity got the better of wisdom and resolve and the instantgratification monkey was back, shrieking “NO budget!”. So far, not so good. In Granada, almost every bar serves a free tapa with every drink. And drinks are pretty cheap, with wine coming in at around €3 and beer €2. So I would be forgiven for thinking this was going to be budget gold for the trip. While the boys worked during the day, I tripped merrily from one establishment to another, collecting my free nibbles and
getting gradually more crooked as the hours wore on. Because, as I discovered, tapas are tiny and drinks are large and it’s near impossible to actually fill yourself up with this method of dining. I thoroughly enjoyed the adventure, but ended up stocious drunk, having an early night after inadvertently spending the entirety of that day’s allocated funds plus half of the next on booze. There follows a list of similar reasons why I’m terrible at budgeting and how this holiday proved that. I can’t drink tap water. The metallic, dirty taste of it makes me gag. And mineral water is more expensive than beer in Spain, while hydration in the heat is even more important. I like pretty things. Although I did amazingly well on this count, simply through necessity. I didn’t buy a single gift or keepsake or article of glorious clothing (oh, but the shops! Granada is a stylish city)despite being tempted at every turn. I prefer taxis to walking and buses. No brainer. Though I did keep taxis to a minimum and got lots of lovely exercise clambering up steep cobbled streets into the hills of Sacromonte (needed plenty of water for that hike though). Walking about and exploring the many tiny, windy alleys and the vast and imposing presence of the Alhambra was actually the best and cheapest way to spend my days, though my leg muscles did cramp up something serious. I want to do everything and that very much includes all the usual pricey tourist traps. This time round, I escaped mostly unscathed, not doing any tours or paying the €20 to visit the Alhambra, rather lurking around the bottom of the cliffs it sits on and almost getting mugged by some scrawny, giggly teenage gypsies. The one expense I did submit to was a visit to the Moorish baths. Come on, I deserved it, I had denied myself on so many other levels! I looked up a few and went for the cheapest, which was definitely a mistake. A unique experience, but a mistake, without a shadow of a doubt. This was not a relaxing spa experience. This was a mass bathing experience with every sweaty tourist who could drag their dirty feet up a flight of stairs and straight into the tub. I was almost drowned by a large American man’s tsunami of displacement water. And when I got home, my lovely friend hugged me and said “Oh my God, you STINK.” So, the moral of the story is; if you’re not good at budgets, you probably shouldn’t go on holidays. And if you’re going to ‘treat’ yourself, never choose the cheapest option.
Wonderful Walks in County Sligo
This Month: Lissadell House & Gardens
Distance: Unlimited. Take a short stroll around the walled gardens and explore the house and exhibitions in all their historical glory, or ramble through woodlands and along the strand until your legs ache and your heart swells with the beauty of the landscape. Difficulty Level: Piece of cake. And you can actually have a piece of cake at the end of your walk, in the beautiful and tastily stocked tearoom. Directions: Drive out past Drumcliffe and turn right through Carney. Follow the signs for Lissadell House and Gardens. Don’t forget, this is a family home, which is open between 10.30 and 6pm from May to October only. And you’ll need to buy a ticket to access their estate, so make a day of it and enjoy every moment. Description: Lissadell House and Gardens offer something for everyone. The summer months are such a perfect time to visit, with the stunning Alpine Garden in full bloom and the light reflecting over the length of Lissadell strand, Benbulben dappled in sunshine in the distance. The property stood falling into disrepair for many years, and then spent another long period closed to the public, so it’s a blessing to have it open and welcoming visitors again, under the warmly watchful eyes of owners Constance Cassidy and Eddie Walsh. One truly can get lost in the woods, wander along beside bubbling streams, admire the house from a distance, up close and even from inside on one of the hugely informative and interesting tours... Options are endless. If you’re lucky, someone will be mowing the vast expanse of lawn and spreading the addictive scent of fresh cut grass. Deeper along wooded lanes, fragrances of moist earth and wild garlic abound and the only sounds are birdsong and the crunch of twigs underfoot. There’s a late 18th century ice house hidden in the bushes along the way, and plenty of pretty wrought iron benches dotted about the grounds to pause, rest and take in the country air. The Leonard Cohen and Westlife concerts that took place here in 2010 have gone down in local history and there are rumours of more to come. Family fun days (like the wonderful Easter Egg hunt in April) pop up now and then and draw great crowds to the lovingly maintained grounds. Lissadell House is open again and well worth a visit some fine summer day.
