REACHING FOR THE SKY WITH

Silverstars Cheerleaders

O

ne of Sligo’s fastest growing new sports, allstar cheerleading is taking off in a big way. Blossoming from its traditional side line motivational roots, the all-star offshoot is a much more serious pursuit, involving athletics, choreography and dance. With both recreational and competitive teams, the

Athletics gym, the air of positivity is palpable. With youngsters stretching and exercising, while others simply chat and giggle, there’s a real family feeling about the club. As I sit down to chat with head coach Emily Kelly, it’s not difficult to see where they kids take their cues from. With an unbridled enthusiasm, the former kickboxer’s bright demeanour is infectious as she explains the reason for the club’s morale; “it’s because it’s so unified”, she says; “everyone works together”. Springing into life a little under four years ago, it was from a chance visit to a conference in Limerick that the Sligo Silverstars was born. “There was a cheerleading conference on”, explains Emily taking up the story: “I thought the course was

Sligo Silverstars, mentored by head coach and director Emily Kelly are once again taking to the world’s stage, as they prepare to head to Paris to face competitors in the European championships. Eamon O’Neill caught up with Emily to find out all about the club, and what it takes to become a contender. Stepping into Silverstar

pretty cool, and I was pretty impressed with that, and I got hooked”. From there the idea to take the sport to Sligo was born: “It was something very different; it was new and it interested me because I thought; there’s nothing like this - I’ve never seen anything like this before”. To some, cheerleading might be seen as something of a supporting pursuit, rather than a standalone sport. However, Emily is quick to dispel any notion that this is the case. “A lot of people associate it with pompoms and girls on the side lines just shaking their booty and waving their hands in the air”, she admits; “but It’s not like that at all”. Explaining the complexities of all-star cheerleading, a picture emerges of an extremely physical and demanding sport: “The kids have to train about three to four hours a week”, says Emily; “they do conditioning, they do cardio work, and then they do full on stunting and dancing, so it’s nonstop”. And hard work is the key to success, for although the club caters for all levels; with recreational, novice and league teams, the Silverstars has a serious and competitive side to it too.

11

SLIGO SPORT NOVEMBER, 2016 “We’re sending two teams to The European Open Championships, which are being held in Disneyland Paris in November”, booms the proud coach excitedly. There’s an incentive for any youngster, I offer: “Exactly, and it’s an amazing opportunity for them; to go over and to compete in Disneyland itself”, agrees the trainer. “We’ve four days in the theme park, and the kids then get to walk in the actual Disney parade after the competition”, she enthuses. Although a dream come true for those taking part, Emily warns that there is still plenty to do before reaching the event: “It’s a massive adventure for them, but they have a lot of work to put in before they get over there. They’re in here three days a week, and they’re doing up to five hours of training at each session”, she explains. For such a lot of work, routines typically last only two and a half minutes, however Emily is quick to stress that it can be gruelling: “you feel every single bit of it when you’re on the mat”, says the athlete. Dedication, however, is not something that the students are lacking. “The time that these kids

put in to get to the level that they’re at is serious. They’re focused, and they know what they want to do. It becomes their life, this bubble; these kids become their family, and they don’t want to let their team down”, she beams. “It instils confidence in them; every single one of them has fantastic confidence – it’s amazing”. It’s this confidence that brings the team together, and, cooperation it seems, is at the very heart of all-star cheerleading. “The energy is very positive”, says Emily; “the whole American thing where they’re trying to keep it very positive and promote the spirit of cheerleading – we’re right onboard with all of that”. With our chat winding down, Emily is keen to stress that although predominantly female based, the Silverstars is for everyone: “It’s mostly girls, but we do have boys. We had ten

last year, but they all went off to college! laughs the coach. Explaining the virtues of the male members of the club, Emily says: “The boys are very good – they’re a pleasure to teach, they have no fear, and they just and to go for it”. As our time comes to an end, and the busy director runs off to tend to another group of tumblers, I ask if despite her efforts, cheerleading is sometimes taken less seriously than other sports: “Without a doubt, and that’s the point – to try and change that perception”, she says emphatically. “It’s a sport, and it’s going to be recognised as such after Christmas by the Irish Sports Council”, she states, proudly. With national recognition and the World Championships to look forward to, 2017 looks set to be another glittering year for the crown logoed Silverstars.

KEVIN EGAN CARS PREMIER DIVISION 2016/17 Cornview Celtic 4 - 2 The White Gorillas

In the game of the season so far the BallinaBoys will be wondering how they didn’t come away with at least a share of the spoils but that

man again Gareth Kelly proved his worth and then some by banging in another 4 on a night when it could have been all so

different.#McDonaghs men showed once again why they are the reigning and defending #Champions by coming from 2-1 down after leading the game early in the 1st half.Joey slotted home from the spot to level things at 1-1 and 5 mins later Richie Lynn somehow got his head to a cross to open his eyes to see the ball fly into the top corner to put the Gorillas 2-1 up.But from then on it was the #KellyShow he latched onto a miss hit cross to make it 2-2 on the night, 8 mins later he cooly beat the despairing dive

of #Kennedy in the goals to curl a 25 yard free kick into the bottom corner to make it 3-2.His fourth and game ending came after he was brought down inside the box after some trickery from Healy to set him free.He dusted himself off and finished into the top corner to end any hopes of a comeback 4-2. A special mention to #MarkKennedy in the #Gorillagoals who pulled off some top class saves but #Superman wouldn’t have stopped Kelly on this showing tonight .

Bald Eagle’s FC 4 - 0 Foleys Bar FC 2 goals from MOTM DavidAddams and 1 a piece from #McLeash & Lynchsecure all 3pts for #Hartes men and move them up to joint 4th on a night when they were simply to good for Foleys who in fairness were missing some of their regular starting 11. But take nothing away from the Eagles they were at it from the get go and took an early and well deserved lead thanks to man of the match #Addiewith a finesse header into the top corner .He later

added a 2nd after tempting and teasing the defence with faint shot after faint shot before stroking the ball past Funston who was now in between the sticks following Colemanssin bin after giving away a penalty for Eagles 2nd of the game which was taking by McLeash. ConorLynch ro unded off the scoring to add more misery to Corrigan who is now under pressure from the board of directors after dropping 5 points in his last 2 games.

Boyle Celtic FC 4 3 STSG UTD

Goals from #Hughes 3 and #Deery 1 claim all 3pts and maintain the#RoscommonsMen 100% start to the season to go back #TopOfTheLeague. Charlie’s #MeanMachine nearly got a share of the spoils only to be denied by a last gasp goal line clearance after #Callaghan made it 4-3 from the penalty spot. PRIMARY SCHOOLS TRIATHLON A MASSIVE SUCCESS PHOTOS © COLIN GILLEN/FRAMELIGHT.IE

370 kids complete Primary Schools Triathlon

F

riday the 21st of October saw 370 children representing 22 Primary School from across Sligo complete a Primary Schools Triathlon. The event, organised by Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership in partnership with Triathlon Ireland Junior Development Officer Ross McLynn and assistance from Sligo Triathlon Club, was hosted at Sligo Sports Complex and Cleveragh Regional Park. The event took place in near perfect conditions despite some misty rain in the early morning and involved children completing a 25m or 50m swim depending on age group, 1.5km cycle and a 800m run all based in the fabulous public facilities of Sligo Sports Complex and Cleveragh Regional Park. Children went off in nine different waves and each child received a medal as they crossed the finish line. No times were recorded as this was purely a non-competitive event for all primary school children from 3rd class to 6th class, the emphasis was on fun participation and completing the distance. This created an enjoyable

atmosphere for the children and was evident from buzz and excitement around the venue, not only from the children but also from the large crowd of supporters of parents, teacher s and friends who came along to cheer on the participants. This event has come on the back of previous successful collaborations between Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership and Triathlon Ireland, but could not have been done without the help, manpower and equipment

of local triathlon club and volunteers. The organisers would like to thank all the volunteers who gave up their time to make the event safe and fun for the children taking part. Triathlon Ireland Development Officer said, “What a day for sport in Sligo...Triathlon Ireland and Youth Sport West’s successful partnership continued with another successful inter county primary schools event, setting what must be a national record with over 370 kids taking part in a non-competitive try-atri. Boys and girls from the age of 8 and up took on a tough course with a mixture of bravery and excitement. The happy faces at the end combined with numbers increasing by over 100 in one year from the same event last year can only mean promising things both for the sport and for the event.” For more information on schools programmes contact Theresa Kilgannon the Youth Sport Development Officer with Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership at 0719161511 or email theresa@sligosportandrecreation.ie Carrick-on-Shannon

CrossFit is the new definition of fitness - CrossFit creates ATHLETES What is Fitness? For years the fitness industry have been unable to define fitness, until now. CrossFit has defined fitness as “an increase in work capacity across broad time and modal domains”. This basically means fitness should not be determined by any one trait but should be determined by how good an individual is at everything, to achieve this level of fitness we must specialize in nothing.

Walkers will then leave the Leitrim Way and walk 3km due East to Lough Carran. You will then turn right and walk West for .75km to Lackagh Lough and the Two Sisters. The Two sisters are two giant rocks overlooking Lackagh Lough, each rock is about the side of a semi detached house. (This is difficult terrain and walkers will have the choice to avoid it and walk back to the start of the walk along the Leitrim Way). After reaching the Two Sisters, the walk will then go due East for 3.5km back to the Leitrim Way and walk six km North to the start. Total Distance is: 16km approx. The Walk along the Leitrim Way is easy but the trek to Lackagh Lough is challenging over rough ground. Highest point is 440 meters. The ascent is gradual. Duration will be 5 to 6 hours approx, depending on the group, shorter if walkers stay on the Leitrim Way. This walk is suitable for the fit and is under the watchful eye of the Holey Soles Hill walking club. Please wear hill walking boots, waterproofs and bring a packed lunch and hot drink RAMBLE If you prefer something more pedestrian, opt for a 2 hour ramble in Glenfarne Demense. Enjoy stunning views of Lough MacNean and across to Fermanagh and Cavan This walk on gravel paths is easy paced. Participants will see some of the pieces on the MacNean Sculpture trail and will visit the site of Glenfarne Hall of the former Tottenham Estate. Please wear strong walking shoes/boots and waterproofs.

SLIGO LEITRIM & DISTRICT SOCCER LEAGUE T

he Boys of Ballisodare United are the league leaders of The Great Southern Hotel Sligo Super League after yet another excellent display against a very good and somewhat unlucky St John’s. Ballisodare went three goals up the opener from Darragh Healy and Conor Davey cracking home two brilliant strikes added to that a missed penalty from Darragh Healy and yes it was all one-way traffic as St John’s went down to ten men following the penalty award. Yet the Coolbeg boys showed their mettle and despite Colin Feehily missing from the penalty spot Malachy Spratt made no mistake with a second St John’s spot kick to leave them in with a shout at half time. The second half seen Ballisodare United dominate with that extra man and leading scorer Andrew Patton netted twenty minutes from time bringing his tally to twelve goals in seven games. St John’s still battled on and were rewarded just before the fulltime whistle when Conor Brennan struck a fine effort this was by all

accounts a cracker of a game and but for the sending off St John’s might have taken something from the game. Ballisodare are starting to look the real deal with their biggest threat perhaps Carbury. Aughanagh Celtic the draw specialists this season yet again shared the points in this six goal thriller at home to visitors Ballymote Celtic. Bryan Craig scoring twice and Thomas Cryan adding the third for an exciting Aughanagh Celtic side coming back to their best. Ballymote Celtic finding their feet in the Super League were very sharp and the Hitman Mark Irwin firing home two superb goals with Karl Scanlon striking the third that insured an excellent point for the visitors. Carrick Town rocked the boat in the Andrew Mullen Sligo Pallets Premier League with a blistering display of power and pace away to the league leaders Ballygawley Celtic who were undefeated all season and prior to this game had only conceded seven goals. The Town hit Ballygawley for five Ray

Mulvey with two from play the Big Man Niall Comerton with two from the penalty spot and Conor as smooth as Silke with the fifth rounding off a super display from the Town. North Sligo King Pins Cliffoney Celtic took full advantage of Ballygawleys defeat as they won by the odd goal in three at home to a vastly improved Coolaney United. Christy Keaney and Kevin Gavigan were the hero’s for Cliffoney with a goal each and Aiden Coleman netted for Coolaney United. Manager Darren Kelly seen his young Merville United side go three goals up at home Benbulben FC and it looked all over. Benbulben however stormed backed and at one stage actually led by five goals to four. But there was still more to come in this pulsating high scoring encounter with Benbulben in the lead at six goals to five it looked like the comeback of the season but in injury time Merville equalised in the highest scoring game of the weekend. Joe Spratt and Ryan Hargadon each

Connacht Representative Squad for Ward Cup

scored twice for Merville United with Bradley Fowley netting once and last and most important on the day for Merville Conor Cox. Benbulben scorers were Nigel Gallagher, Paddy Watters brothers Alan and Niall Mc Gloughlin, Eoghan Brady and Anthony Moylette. Michael Hynes Manager of Dromore Villa seen His Young Guns hit Gurteen Celtic for four without reply in a high tempo encounter. Stephen Feeney cracking home two superb strikes aided and abetted with a goal each from Jason Harte and David Cuilkin to take all three points. The Villa are away to Ballygawley Celtic on the Astro at Cleveragh and with a full squad they will give a good account of themselves. MCR FC had no game this weekend as their goal keeper Tony Clarke was on duty with the Connacht Representative Team in Cork, next weekend will be a stern test for MCR when they travel to take on the league leaders Cliffoney Celtic in what will be a cliff hanger. Coolaney Utd welcome Arrow Harps in what could be a home win while Benbulben will prove a threat to Gurteen Celtic. © Results: Sunday 16th October The Great Southern Hotel Sligo Super League: Aughanagh Celtic 3 Ballymote Celtic 3; Ballisodare Utd 4 St John’s FC 2; Glenview Stars P Manor Rangers P Andrew Mullen Sligo Pallets Premier League: Ballygawley Celtic 1 Carrick Town 5; Real Tubber P Arrow Harps P; Merville Utd 6 Benbulben FC 6; MCR FC P. U15 A LEAGUE: SLIGO RFC V BALLINA

SLIGO SPORT NOVEMBER, 2016

Corinthians get the better of Sligo U13’s Sligo U13 rugby team played their third league game of the season on Saturday the 8 October and went down 24 10 to a physically bigger Corinthians team who raced to a 14 0 half time lead. This was the team’s first game on the full pitch in Hamilton Park and while slow to adjust to the bigger pitch and some of the interpretation of the rules they adapted very well to come back in the second half and score two excellent tries. The game was played in an excellent spirit with both sides spreading the ball freely. Centre Ben O’Brien continued his rich vein of form this season with both tries from Sligo; one out wide showing his pace and one from in close following good work by the forward pack. Outhalf David Keyes adapted to conditions very well with an excellent kicking display from hand. Number 8 Matthew Ryan battled very bravely against a bigger pack, ably assisted by Cathal Morahan and Ross Clarke who had good games. Starting scrumhalf Sean Keane and livewire fullback Ben Cawley tackled bravely all day as did Jack Dennison who is emerging as both a potent attacking threat and lead the tackle count. Andrew Barlow showed great versatility swapping positions to great effect and was unlucky to be denied an intercept try. New starters this year Owen Mulkeen and Sam White made fine contributions throughout.

Well done all you volunteers Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue Team A late night for the team last week with not 1 but 2 callouts, one immediately after the other!

Last gasp try defeats determined Sligo Sligo’s First XV suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Bruff on Saturday afternoon in Limerick.A bus of loyal supporters travelled from Sligo for the big. game.Kick off was at a later time of 4:00pm due to the televised interpro game between Munster and Leinster.Sligo kicked off from right to left and started off slowly. Bruff took the game to Sligo from the off and got three points on the board after 9 minutes via a penalty.By the 16th minute mark, Bruff had further enhanced their lead through a penalty and an unconverted try. However, Sligo roared back into the game through the evergreen Ross O’Boyle, who bundled his way over on the back of a rolling maul.Conor Kerins failed to add the extras but soon made amends for this after half an hour when Aaron Spring touched down to put Sligo ahead for the first time.Kerins expertly converting from the touchline to snatch the lead before half time.Footage of this can be seen on the “Sligo Rugby” Facebook page. Half time score was 12-11 in Sligo’s

favour. The second half kicked off and Sligo continued on from where the left off at the end of the first half and added another penalty through the reliable boot of the aforementioned Kerins to put 4 between the teams. A couple of minutes later , the immense pressure imposed by Sligo resulted in another try through the adept hands of Daire Byrne.Kerins added the extras to leave the score at 22-11 to Sligo. This score sparked the Bruff men into life as they ran in two unconverted tries to raise the temperature of the game. The score now stood at 21-22 to leave the minimum between them.In the 73rd minute Sligo moved further ahead with another well executed penalty. However there was to be one final sting in the tail.At the last play of the game Bruff ran in untouched in the corner to send the Bruff men into delirium and the Sligo men into despair. This was a very brave effort from Sligo away from home and although they will be disappointed will take solace from the fact they claimed a losing bonus point. Final score-

In the second half, Ballinrobe got an early penalty to put pressure on the Sligo rearguard .However Sligo held out to grind out the win versus their Mayo counterparts. Final score Ballinrobe 3 Sligo 7

URSULINE V GRAMMAR - HOCKEY

Home Nations Cup Funding

Marc MacSharry TD presenting the Ursuline All Ireland Soccer team with €3000 in conjunction with Mr Noel Kennedy, Sligo/Leitrim District Soccer League for their recent trip to the Home Nations Cup in the UK. An enormous thank you to them both for securing the funds and for their very generous support.

Aviva Connacht blitz

Congratulations to the Ursuline Senior and U.16 hockey team’s who played against the Grammar today in beautiful sunny conditions. The Senior game was a very tight affair. Despite both teams having chances in what was an end to end game the match finished 0-0 thanks to great goal-keeping from both sides. The U.16 match was another lively affair with the Grammar getting off to a great start and scoring midway through the first half. However, the Ursuline settled and slowly turned the game in their favour and ran out comfortable winners finishing the match 2-1 up.

Coola on tour on a recent trip to the Aviva to support the boys in the green

Sligo's U10 boys travelled to neighbours Ballina RFC on Sat morning 22nd Oct for the Annual Aviva Connacht Blitz. The faced their counterparts from Westport RFC in their 1st game followed by games against Loughrea, Corinthians & Claremorris RFC. The boys played exceptionally well resulting in 4 wins from 4. The lads passed and moved the ball well and tackled like trojans when they needed to. The Sligo u12s girls also attended the Aviva blitz in Ballina on Saturday. The squad of 16 included 6 players who had never played at a blitz before. While the team faced strong competition in all 4 games they acquitted themselves admirably. They achieved this by playing a sparkling brand of running and offloading rugby which resulted in some wonderful team tries. The emphasis on the day was fun and both the lads & ladies really did enjoy themselves. Well done to all.

LADIES TOUR OF LOUGH GILL A GREAT SUCCESS I

nnisfree Wheelers once again in conjunction with Sligo Sports Partnership – Women in Sport, staged the eighth annual Ladies Lough Gill 40km Cycle Tour. This great event took place in autumnal weather conditions on Saturday 24th of September. Almost eighty women turned out in this ladies only event in aid of the North-West Multiple Scleroses Support Centre, Sligo. We would like to thank the many women who travelled from different parts of the country to participate in this unique event. Among the visitors were a group of women cyclists from the North Pole club in Donegal The cyclists were on their way shortly after 11am and headed for Dromahair via Slish

wood and continued on the scenic road passing the Lake Isle of Innisfree. The island nestled in the morning autumnal sunlight on what turned out to be a pleasant day for cycling. Although some of the women were finding the hilly terrain quite a challenge, the entire group reached Dromahair within an hour and gladly availed of the food-stop provided at The Blue Devon Pub in this picturesque little village. They were treated to a selection of delicious homemade scones, and of course the scrumptious biscuit cake supplied as usual by our own Pam Benson. Fully replenished, our riders then tackled the undulating road towards Parkes Castle and Deer Park hill-climb. At Clogherevagh

crossroads the riders could then look forward to a relatively downhill run into Sligo Town. The only other slight climb was that of Pearse Road in the town. On completing the tour the women were treated to a meal of tea, coffee and a selection of buscuits back at The Sligo Park Hotel and all agreed that this 8th Ladies Tour of Lough Gill was by far the most successful to date. Innisfree Wheelers would like to thank all who helped make this such a success: The 75+ participants, many members of IWCC who assisted in many ways, Sligo Sports Partnership – Women in Sport, An Garda Siochana, The Blue Devon Dromahair, Sligo Park Hotel, The civil defence, and the many sponsors too numerous to mention.

OVER 500 RIDERS GATHERED TO PAY TRIBUTE TO RICHIE BYRNE THE GODFATHER OF IRISH MTB, WHO TRAGICALLY PASSED AWAY AFTER A BATTLE WITH CANCER.

R

ichie Byrne is credited with kickstarting the Irish mountain bike scene back in the nineties when he formed Ireland’s first ever

mountain biking club, which was followed shortly after by the country’s first National Championship race. Richie also ran

the Giant Store, Dublin and raced at elite level. You could expect to see (or hear) his larger than life personality at any big event in the country. More than this though, Richie was a true ambassador of the sport organising women’s, kids’ and beginners’ rides to get as many people as possible excited about his beloved sport. In October last year Richie was diagnosed with a tumor in his brain with another that had spread to his body. True to form, he was resolute in his battle with the disease. He never gave a hint that the cancer would win and even printed t-shirts that said: “if only you knew who you have started on”. His courageous battle inspired many, especially through the No Surrender blog that charted his year long fight. Unfortunately Richie succumbed to the cancer on September 29, he died peacefully in his sleep. 500 riders gathered at Ballinasloe for a Last Blast mass start ride in Richie’s honour, while tributes were also paid at the Foxhunt. The event was full of smiles, happiness and “good craic”, just how he would have wanted. First appeared on dirtmountainbike.com

Innisfree Wheelers out in force in Blacklion A large contingent of Wheelers recently made the journey out to Loughin House near Blacklion in County Cavan to cycle in their annual community charity event. This year course designer and promoter and Innisfree Wheelr stalwart John Greene must not have heard the weather forecast! After almost three weeks of balmy autumn weather our members were faced with monsoon-like wet conditions on what turned out to be a very tough but mostenjoyable cycle. Martin McCabe relives this very tough but great event.

“What a poor day for cycling it was, but all for a good cause. It was the hardest 60k I’ve cycled as it lashed rain for the first 40k. I have to say, the food stop was well received at that stage and the food at the end was class, soup and a choice of chicken or beef on rice and chips!! It was nice to cycle on new roads, Cavan-Blacklion, Florencourt rd in Fermanagh, a loop around before climbing into Glangevlin for the tea and then across into Dowra and back to Loughan House. I hear there were 55 cyclists out which was good considering the

weather! A big shout goes out to Martin Keville who cycled the route with me, showed me a few of his old haunts way back when….lol” Geevagh IKA Charity Cycle on Saturday 1st of October. There was a great turnout of Innisfree Wheelers on this sunny Saturday morning for the IKA cycle from Geevagh. The weather was good if a bit windy but a nice 70k and for a good cause. We had 13 from the club out, but a few were camera shy! Well done to all these Wheelers who keep showing up in large numbers at local charity events.

Northwest mtb well represented in Rostrevor Absolutely mental weekend in Rostrevor, Co Down! 400 riders, A Mass start! and only one way down.. Northwest mtb were representing with 11 riders in attendance. Some great results from the guys too. A 12th place for Kyle Malee and 37th for Warner Wilders with most the other guys finishing mid pack and most importantly all making it down safely! Roll on next year!

Carrowmore Archers

Tuesday nights are back on for club members. Luckily it was still bright when we got out there. Beautiful evening, fabulous sunset, then got the generator to work after a lot of effort. Polytunnel looks fantastic in the dark. Bit of shooting, bit of craic, plan to do it again each week 7ish-9ish. All club members welcome.

SLIGO YACHT CLUB

SLIGO SPORT NOVEMBER, 2016 Sligo Yacht Club recently Honored a great friend and member of the Club, Tim Corcoran will leave Sligo to join his family in Spain. Over a 100 close friends from all parts of the country joined Tim and his wife Pilar to celebrate the night with presentations and a fantastic dinner produced by his Sister Nikki, Bon Voyage

Remembering Alan McEneff formely of Sligo Yacht Club Foynes Yacht Club lost a stalwart this season with the untimely passing of Alan McEneff in early May. Alan, who was actively involved in promoting sailing to newcomers in the Club, will be greatly missed by all in the Shannon Estuary Club. Alan, a native Dubliner, from

Booterstown, started his sailing career with Sligo Yacht Club on theGP14 circuit where he excelled for many years. He was also a past Commodore of Sligo Yacht Club. Alan moved to Galway in the eighties for a number of years and became a member of Gal-

way Bay Sailing Club, where he sailed cruisers. He finally moved to Limerick in the early nineties, and with his good friend Ger Hobbs they successfully campaigned, the cruiser Whisper for many years. Alan then teamed up with Liam Madden and Rurai Buckley and brought an X332

Dexterity to Foynes which he campaigned for 12 years on the West and South coast of Ireland. Many sailors in Foynes can thank Alan for the skills and confidence they acquired under his leadership in the learn to sail programme he set in Foynes. He was very proud of his so called newbies. Alan gave his time freely to all he encountered at the Club and the various Committees he served on over the years. Close to Alan’s heart was racing, having cut his teeth on the GP14 class; it was inevitable he would graduate to cruiser racing. Each year Alan would make plans for big events, WIORA and Cork Weekand Sovereigns Cup. Delivery to these events was carefully planned, delivery crews enjoyed expert tuition in navigation and boat handling skills under his watchful eye. Alan also took great pride in cooking great meals at sea. These trips to Cork and Galway were the highlight of the Sailing season for Alan and his crew. Alan was also keen to learn new skills himself, having

raced in the Round Ireland Yacht Race 2000 with the late Joe English and crew from Sligo Yacht Club. He often recalled the bad broaches off Eagle Island, Mayo Coast in the middle of the night with the kite up in near Gale conditions. When called on to help with delivery trips, Alan was always keen to take on new adventures, such as hiscruise from Dun Laoghaire to Bordeaux to deliver a yacht to the Med for his good friend Marcus Higgins. It was testament to the high regard and respect Alan was held in by the large number of yachts that turned out on a lovely Sunday in September for Alan’s final farewell. His ashes were released into his beloved Shannon Estuary by his Loving Wife Noelle, daughter Lindsey and son Andrew on the going tide. It was nice to see the wonderful respect shown to Alan and Family, and the remarkable display of genuine gratitude and love for a remarkable one off individual who leaves such a void in all of our lives.

Sligo win their 6th Irish Intercounties Surfing title Sligo won their 6th Irish Intercounties Surfing title with the dream team of current Irish National Champion Gearoid Mc Daid, Aaron Reid, Stephen Kilfeather andColin O Hare. They defeated the Donegal team of Neil and John Britton, Stephen Conwell and Kenny Ward in a closely fought final run off at Tullan on Saturday evening. Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented at lrish Surfing’s 50th Anniversary Celebration Dinner on Saturday night. Recipients were the five original founders of The Irish Surfing Association Kevin Cavey, Roger Steadman, Bo Vance, Dave Kenny and Brian Britton together with former Chairman Roci Allan.

2017 Rowing Season Under Way Hard luck to the Sligo lads who gave a great performance in the All Ireland finals in Roscommon recently – Jason Earlis was beaten by a very good Dublin opponent in Robbie Farrelly- it was Jason’s first final and there’s no doubt he will be in another one soon Martin Cooney was beaten by Paddy Donovan from Laois- Donovan’s serve won him a lot of aces

and Martin struggled with it for most of the game- once Cooney returned the serve he matched Donovan in most areas. Last up was ballymotes Francis McCann- in his way of an all Ireland medal was Westmeaths Robbie McCarty Snr - the pair have met on numerous occasions before and their matches are always a great spectacle. McCarty came

out on top today - he got off to a good start and although McCann clawed his way back into the first game, it was McCarty took it 21-15. McCarty dominated most of the second game even though there were some great rallies. It wasn’t to be Sligos day but the players gave it everything and will hopefully be back stronger next year

Connacht MOTOR CLUB The 2017 rowing season is now well underway having started with a Come Try Day in mid September. Rowers are now beginning to settle into their fixed crews and fixed training slots with the influx of beginners beginning to settle. Fortunately the weather to date has been very accommodating with calm conditions on the Garavogue facilitating the introduction of beginners to the sport. Circuit training is also under way on Monday and Thursday nights for the fifty members of the club. The club is continuing to improve the boat racking within their boathouse and to facilitate this a Zombie 5KM Fun Run has been scheduled for Sunday October 30th in Doorly Park. Afterwards there will be light refreshments in the Riverside Hotel where the club invites all past and present members to join them in celebrating the tenth anniversary of the club.

It’s great to see Sligo being represented on the Cork 20 Rally last weekend. Niall Burns navigated for John O’Sullivan in a Fiesta R2, while Art McCarrick & John McCay took to the stages again in a Honda Civic, raising awareness about platelet donation.
