itans Under 12 boys hosted an edge of your seat tournament in the Jes on Saturday! With 3 of the 6 games of the day being so close, they were decided in front of a delighted, cheering crowd in the last few seconds of the games! Dublin Lions v Titans ended up inTriple Overtime! Corrib domi-
nated from the beginning, and walked away with the gold medals. Very strong performance from the Corrib team. Dublin Lions, Titans and Sligo All Stars were all evenly matched and the games between them provided great entertainment. If 3 pointers, were allowed at U12’s, we would have been in over-
time for a second game, when Dublin Lions, down 3 points, in the final few seconds of their game against Sligo, pulled off a buzzer beating 3 pointer, that only counted for 2 at U12’s and they lost by 1 point. What a day! Great performances all round. Well done to all the players.

Positively By Mark Foley
T
he name is O’Connell,… Michael O’Connell! And while he is not a double O agent with MI5, he could very well pass for one with his tall and athletic stature. But Michael is too honest and good natured to be a James Bond. He is though Agent 7-57, with services to running and his current mission is Couch to 5K!
Running!
Originally from Tramore, County Waterford, Michael first came to Sligo in 1990 to study at the IT. Since then he has made The Yeats country his home and embedded himself into running and athletic circles, Michael is a popular man with an energetic and enthusiastic personality always a positive outlook, a helping hand and words of wisdom and advice – and of course a very good, respected
and decent runner. Michaels first running encounter was in 1986 as a 21year-old where he ran the Dublin marathon as a bit of craic with mates from Waterford posting a 3.36 time. The bug didn’t bite then, that didn’t happen until 2004, when Michael decided to meet up with Sligo Athletic Club at their evening track Session at Sligo IT. He has never looked back and
in fact Michael pioneered a few trends in local running that still stand today, mainly the 7:57am Saturday morning run. It started out with Michael running on a Saturday morning, meeting a fellow runner and then another, one became 3, became 5 and then a group of varying levels, with every ability catered for, the only thing was it was 7.57am – no later! Marathons became a focus
for Michaels running, and with it the long runs and specific sessions. Out of 10 marathons completed, 6 of them were sub 3 hour times, most people would take one sub 3-hour marathon, never mind Michaels 6, the other 4 in some way or another hampered by various injuries and niggles. These days the trend is to travel abroad for the marathon experience, Michael pioneered this trend in 2005 travelling to Amsterdam but admits the Dublin marathon is his favourite.
It was at the 2007 Dublin Marathon where he posted his best time for the 26.2-mile challenge – 2 hours 51 minutes. His best Half Marathon is 77 minutes his best 10 mile was posted close to his roots in Dungarvan where he secured a time of 56.50. His best 10km time happened in 2009 on St. Patricks
day in Tubbercurry another one of his favourite races. A 34.04 time also gave him the race victory on the day. His best 5km time is a blistering 16.10. As well as these great PB times over the normal race distances, Michael has secured a national team medal with Sligo AC over the marathon distance.
It hasn’t always been plain sailing or even plain running for Michael, like most elite athletes, injuries and niggles occur and for periods during his running career, Michael has had to cope with injury and setbacks. A 6-year absence from competing in the Dublin marathon a particular period, but when Michael came back in 2014, he secured another sub 3-hour time. How an athlete comes back from injury is one way to measure their character and Michael takes an honours distinction in that, another measure is how an athlete deals with his running life while injured. What does Michael do? he continues to turn up at races, not with his racing kit but with his camera and begins taking photos at events, encouraging and supporting people from the side of the road and at the starts and finishes of races around the island. Again an honours distinction to our adopted Sligonian. Another story that adds even more merit and distinction to Michael O’Connell’s character is his help towards fellow runners and enthusiasts. It’s coming into the autumn of 2013 and fellow Sligo AC athlete Nicky Davey has over a number of weeks just missed out by mere seconds on breaking the 40minute mark for 10km – the Grange10km is a fantastic event but a tough route, in particular the first half of it. Nonetheless Michael leads out Nicky and sets a pace that brings them through the early tough period, with 2km to go and bang on the right pace, Michael urges Nicky to somehow find the turbo button and go.
Nicky obliges, digs deep and gets his sub 40 minute 10km – the first person to congratulate him – Michael O’Connell! It’s within the last year that Michaels character has arguably been tested the most…His knees were niggling up and Michael thought he’d get them checked out. A scan and subsequent advice from his consultant was to pull back completely from competitive running, his cartilages were nonexistent, easy running every now and then was ok, but full on training programs for marathons and such like was a NO. “It was disappointing but I was able to walk away from competitive running having done a lot” explains Michael “there was no unfinished business” adds the ever positive O’Connell.
“I’ve taken up cycling I am really enjoying that, and I still go to the races, Fionnuala (his partner) is racing and I’m really enjoying supporting her and seeing the guys I trained with, Damian, Trevor and particularly Seamus who I think is going to do very well” explains Michael. It’s not often you meet a character of such positivity and with so much grace to give back as much as possible to people and the sport. It’s important to praise the character of the man, recognise his achievement’s and trust that his story will inspire others. Meanwhile Agent 7-57 continues to encourage and support with his couch 2 5k program, every Monday and Wednesday evening 7.30pm at Cleveragh retail park.

BADMINTON CONNACHT B CLOSED 2017
G
raham Mac Mullen hammers way through opposition to take the double at the Connacht Closed Grade B winning both the Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. This is the second year Sligo City Badminton Club have hosted the Connacht Closed Grade B in the fabulous sports hall in Summerhill College. With some of the top players in Connacht at Grade E-H in the mix there were some titanic battles. It started off with the Men’s Singles and Ian Frizzell, Sligo City, was back to defend his treble title from last year. In the second round under 15 player Enda Clogher, Ballygar Galway, nearly unseated the title holder taking the first set 22-24. Ian Frizzell dug deep and battled it out overcoming the youngster in the next two sets 21-18, 21-14. Ian got through the semi-finals comfortably. In the finals he was to face Sangeeth Gopalakrishnan, Ballina Mayo. Sangeeth had defeated Number 2 seed Sean Staunton, Ballinaheglish Roscommon, and Vidhu Balakrishnan, Ballina Mayo, to make it into the finals. Ian again got off to a bad start dropping the first set 18-21 but fought tooth and nail to win the sets 21-14, 21-
15 and successfully defended his singles title. In the Ladies singles number 2 seed Bernie Lavin, Boyle Roscommon, had to work hard against new Sligo City player Áine Norton who took the first set 2022. Áine was unable to keep up the intensity needed as Bernie’s steel showed through as she determinedly won the next two sets. In the Finals Bernie faced off against under 15 player Jessica Feeney also from Boyle Roscommon. Bernie fought hard but Jessica’s training and practice at Singles paid off and she won the title in 2 straight sets. The Men’s Doubles threw up some upsets when title defenders and number 2 seeds Ian Frizzell and Michael Healy, Sligo City, lost out to an aggressive onslaught from Vidhu Balakrishnan and Sangeeth Gopalakrishnan, Ballina Mayo. The play was hard and flat from the two Ballina men putting the Sligo City men on the defensive. Ian and Michael just couldn’t get control of the game and went out in two sets. Ex champions Graham Mac Mullen and Paul Lynch and, Sligo City, were back to reclaim their title they last won in 2015. Azhagiri Anbazhagan and James McLoughlin, Ballygar Galway took
AIRE approved Est 1997
advantage of having already played a game where as the Sligo City pair had a bye in the first round. Keeping the pressure on and not giving any time for Graham and Paul to settle in they capitalised on the jitters and poor reaction times winning the first set 19-21. In the second set Graham and Paul were trailing behind badly but as the set went
on they were starting to come into their own. Refusing to give an inch they battled their way to taking the set 24-22. With renewed confidence and now firing on all cylinders they took the third set 21-13. In the semi Finals they came up against Vidhu and Sangeeth who had taken out the number two seeds earlier. The first set got off very evenly with the scores neck and neck. Sangeeth who had already played four rounds of Men’s Singles started to show the effects when his leg gave trouble halfway through the first set. The first set ended with Paul and Graham keeping enough pressure on to get away at the end and seal the set at 23-21. With Vidhu having to play shots to protect his partner they were in major trouble. Graham and Paul mercilessly took advantage of this and hammered their way into the finals taking the second set 21-12. On the other side of the draw Ballinaheglish, Roscommon, duo Sean Staunton and David Delaney’s stroll to the finals nearly came unstuck when Ballygar men Michael McLoughlin and Owen Casey put up a hell of a fight taking the first set 18-21 but were outdone by the power of the Roscommon men who came back hard wining the next two sets 21-15, 21-16. The Finals began with Graham
and Paul getting off to a very rocky start. Sean and David were very relaxed and in control. Before they knew it Graham and Paul were 14-7 down and things were looking bad. With a mountain to climb Sligo City’s most aggressive pairing were not going down without a fight. Upping their game and attacking relentlessly Graham and Paul slowly turned the game around. With a confidence boosting display the Sligo City men won the set 21-19. Going into the second set with confidence high Graham and Paul knew this match was for the taking. The start of the second set was neck and neck at 4-4 when the pressure on Sean and David began to show with the pair both making mistakes and hitting the shuttle to long and out. As Sean and David buckled under the pressure Graham and Paul were like juggernauts as they powered their way unstoppable to a 21-11 victory. In the Ladies doubles Sligo City pairing of Deirdre Fox and Áine Norton put paid to the aspirations of number two seeds Helene Hanley and Veronica Quinn winning 21 -9, 21-12. This saw Áine and Deirdre facing off against Bernie Lavin, Boyle, and Corrina Delaney, Ballinaheglish, in the finals. The first set was neck and neck with Áine and Deirdre battling bravely.

SLIGO SPORT FEBRUARY, 2017
The steely determination of Bernie and Corinna with their refusal to give ground saw the Roscommon duo taking the first set 21-18. With their confidence high Bernie and Corinna stamped their authority on the second set taking it 21-14. Mixed in badminton is very tactical game with players trying to protect their weaknesses while exploiting their opponent’s weaknesses. It’s a great game for men and women to play together. With 34 players entered into the competition this was the biggest of the draws. In the first half of the draw Paul Lynch and Jackie Mooney, Sligo City, knocked out number 3/4 seeds Enda Clogher and Jessica Feeney. Using their wealth of experience and tactics
they easily overcame the under 15 duo. Paul and Jackie’s march to the finals hit a wall when they came up against numer 1 seeds Roscommon brother and sister pairing of David and Corrina Delaney. While Pauls endurance started to flag there was no slowing down in David’s game, all the hurling that he plays paying off in his endurance. David and Corrina convincingly strode through to the finals beating Paul and Jackie 21-16, 21-12. On the other side of the draw the Sligo City , number 3/4 seeds, pairing of Graham Mac Mullen and Cliona McGowan had their eyes firmly on the prize. Cliona who was fresh in from her Saturday Morning GAA Training and Graham Mac Mullen full of confidence
from winning the Men’s Doubles were on a mission. In the second round they came up against pairing Vidhu Balakrishnan, Ballina, and Deirdre Fox, Sligo City. Graham and Cliona took the first set easily 21-8 but then had a hiccup when they lost the second 21-23. With a knock to the confidence Graham and Cliona went into the third set determined to exploit their opponent’s weaknesses. Their new tactics worked well and easily dispatched their opponents 21-9. In the Semi-finals Graham and Cliona came up against their fellow club players the number two seeds Ian Frizzell and Bernie Lavin. Having played and lost to Ian and Bernie in a club training match on the previous Tuesday, Graham and Cliona were out to make amends. This was the match up that Graham and Cliona were looking forward to. The speed and endurance of Ian Frizzell whose ability to move around the court and get shots back from positions that no one else would have gotten to that makes him a very hard opponent. Matched with his partner who is known for her steely determination and never give in attitude. Against them were Graham Mac Mullen, a man who relies on relentless attacking and speed, and Cliona McGowan who has power, speed and great ability to vary her play. Fighting tooth
and nail with both side fully committed, Graham and Cliona were able to edge in front and stay there taking the first set 2118. Confidence high going into the second set Graham and Cliona knew they were in a very strong position but also knew that their opponents would fight all the way. Unfortunately for Ian and Bernie they were outmatched on the day losing 21-16 in the second set. This put an end to Ian’s and Bernie’s hopes for adding the mixed title to their Singles and Ladies Doubles titles respectively. Buzzing from their Victory over their fellow club mates Graham and Cliona faced up against the Delaney brother and sister pairing. After beating David Delaney earlier in the Men’s Finals Graham Mac Mullen was ready to take control and dominate the game. Not used to playing such a strong and aggressive pairing David and Corrina struggled with the onslaught of smashes from both Graham and Cliona. Taking the first set very convincingly 2111. Graham’s style of play was eating up huge amounts of energy the question was could he keep it up. Having already played 15 sets could he keep it going? After some coaching from fellow club mate Sean Staunton the Roscommon duo were back in the second set and they were not going down without a fight. At the mid set interval the scores were very close with Graham and Cliona just ahead at 11-9.
Graham was looking very glad of the 90 second break to recover for the next half of the set. Cliona was looking very comfortable having the advantage of being relatively fresh with 8 sets played. On the resumption of play the Delaneys fell apart and just had no answer to Graham and Cliona who were absolutely relentless never giving the Delaneys a chance. Graham and Cliona went on to win the next 10 points straight finishing 21-9. Men’s Singles – Ian Frizzell (Sligo City) Ladies’ Singles – Jessica Feeney (Boyle) Men’s Doubles – Graham Mac Mullen, Paul Lynch (Sligo City) Ladies’ Doubles – Bernie Lavin (Boyle), Corrina Delaney(Ballinaheglish) Mixed Doubles – Graham Mac Mullen, Cliona McGowan(Sligo City) Thanks to Paul Dolan and Paul Lynch for all the great organising of the event. Between matching up players, scheduling the matches and setting up and putting away again these guys put so much into Badminton. Thanks to everyone who also helped out over the day. Thanks to Summer Hill College for the use of their facilities. Thanks to James Connolly for taking some wonderful photos which you can check out on Sligo City Badminton Club’s Facebook page. Finally thanks to all the players who made it such a great day.

The dust has settled after a brilliant and successful weekend in Rathkeale.. Well done to all the players and management on a great achievement - returning to Sligo as the winners of the West Coast Challenge. We went there in a
confident mood and this confidence was evident when the lads took to the dart board on Saturday. It’s the first time Sligo has won the competition and it sets the lads up nicely going into next months Inter Counties (All Ireland’s)
Well done to all once again! Below : Sligo county darts - how the J & S Premier League looks after 9 weeks of games.. Only two weeks of games remaining before the top 8 will be finalised.
Sligo Grammar School’s Positive Mental Health week kicked off on Monday 30th January. Already there have been inspirational speakers, activities at lunchtime and workshops for the students. The first speaker we had was past pupil Breifne Earley who spoke to the whole school at a special assembly and later to groups of students from 5th, 4th and 3rd year. He told them about his own struggle with depression and how he combatted it by setting goals and challenges for himself. One of the challenges he set himself was to cycle around the globe, which he did in style, winning the longest endurance sports event in the world, the 30,000km World Cycle Race. Breifne wrote about the race and why he did it in his book “Pedal the Planet”. As well as hearing about how others dealt with mental health issues, students were given the chance to try some fun activities in class and at lunchtime. On Monday the whole school got involved in Tug-O-War competitions and on Tuesday Zumba was the lunchtime activity.

CrossFit is the new definition of fitness - CrossFit creates ATHLETES What is Fitness? For years the fitness industry have been unable to define fitness, until now. CrossFit has defined fitness as “an increase in work capacity across broad time and modal domains”. This basically means fitness should not be determined by any one trait but should be determined by how good an individual is at everything, to achieve this level of fitness we must specialize in nothing.

METAL-MAN SWIM SERIES NOW IN ITS 9TH YEAR By Mark Foley The Metal-man Swim Series is now in its 9th year, the 250 places for this year’s edition are all full up. The 3 race swim series will take place at Rosses Point beach on Saturday 3rd June, Saturday 10th June and Saturday 1st July. There are two leagues within the series, The Sprint League and the Distance League. 500 meters, 750 meters and 1km over the three dates makes up the Sprint League and 1km, 1.5km and 2km makes up the Distance League over the three dates. It’s a unique event, and the brain child of Sligo Swimmer Shane O’Doherty, who after competing in a series of cycling time-trials wondered why can’t there equally be a swim series? – and hence the Metal-man Swim Series was born in 2009 with 15 competitors.

CILLIAN GALLAGHER TO CAPTAIN IRELAND U20S AGAINST ITALY
Ladies Free to Harps game With Valentine’s Day coming up, what better place to be than under the shadow of Ben Bulben in a venue that has shared the hopes and dreams of the people of Sligo for over 100 years. Our gift to our female fans is free admission to our Valentine’s Night friendly against Finn Harps. The game kicks-off at 7:45pm next Tuesday. Before that Rovers face the Irish Defence Forces at 7pm on Wednesday February 8 with admission just €5 for adults and free for kids.
History book still available
Congratulations to Sligo’s very own Cillian Gallagher on being made Irish captain for this weeks game v Italy. Connacht flanker Cillian Gallagher will captain the side in the absence of injured full-back Jack Kelly. NUIG Connacht Academy player Gallagher was one of the standout performers in the back row for Ireland in the win over Scotland last week. The 20-year-old is a product of Summerhill College and Sligo RFC and currently plays in the Ulster Bank League for Corinthians.
The Irish Independent’s soccer correspondent Daniel McDonnell described Rovers official history The Bit O’ Red as an ‘extraordinary piece of work. It’s a tome that will not age. For every Sligo Rovers fan, it is an essential purchase, yet there’s stuff in there for anyone with an appreciation of Irish football history.’ There were similarly positive reviews across all sections of the local and national media, and Sligo Rovers Heritage Group Chairman Aidan Mannion expects there will be renewed interest in the book as we approach the start of a new season. ‘The reaction has been simply phenomenal. The advance subscriptions created a great sense of anticipation for the book, and it proved to be a very popular Christmas present for Rovers supporters. It is already acknowledged to be the most detailed history produced by any League of Ireland Club, and it will be a definitive reference book for this and future generations.’ The Bit O’ Red is available at the Record Room, Sligo, Cost €75 hardback, €50 regular edition. Golfers Tee Up for International Amateur Tournament International Kings Cup 2017 Leading amateur golfers from across the USA and Ireland will converge on Northern Ireland’s epic fairways in May this year for a competition which will see the best players from both sides of the Atlantic battle it out for one of the most prestigious trophies in amateur golf. Billed as the amateur Ryder Cup, the International Kings Cup Match Play Event is a leading amateur event played in honour of golf’s greatest ambassador, Mr Arnold Palmer. Four provincial qualifiers will be staged across the length and breadth of Ireland in a bid to find the best Irish team to take on the USA in a three day 54 Hole Match Play Tournament from 22nd May until 25th May 2017. The event is structured like the Ryder Cup and was created in 2016 when the United States Golf Challenge, the largest pairs better ball tournament brought their leading 8 pairs -16-man amateur team across to Northern Ireland to compete against Ireland in the first ever International Kings Cup. The format of the event is unique as it has openings for every person who holds an official GUI handicap and there are four flights of handicaps so everyone can enter. There is also two age brackets from which the two man teams can qualify under (Age 18+ and Senior 50+) to try and secure a spot on the Irish Team to represent Ireland. There are two stages of qualification with the first being held across leading courses in each province. Eight teams from each qualifier will go forward to compete in a final qualifying stage to be played on the Faldo Course on 23rd April 2017 at the five-star Lough Erne Resort in County Fermanagh. Speaking as the event was announced, Lynn McCool, Director of Golf and Head Professional at Lough Erne Resort said it was a fantastic tribute to the legendary Arnold Palmer and an event which would attract golfers from all across Ireland. “Following the success of the 2016 staging of the International Kings Cup this is one of the most eagerly anticipated amateur tournaments in 2017. We at Lough Erne Resort are thrilled to be hosting this event for the second consecutive year which will see 32 golfers from across the United States and Ireland play on the magnificent Faldo Course. “I’m delighted to take the event this year to key courses throughout Ire-
land. Each of the qualifying clubs have really got behind the event including Ardglass Golf Club in Ulster, Dunmurry Springs in Leinster, Westport Golf Club in Connaught, and Ennis Golf Club in Munster. “We look forward to welcoming players from both sides of the Atlantic to the event, which looks set to stir up Ryder Cup-style rivalry amongst the teams. Competitors will be able to experience first-hand Lough Erne Resort and why Northern Ireland is truly a land made for golf. For further visit: www.lougherneresort.com/International-KingsCup.html Rules of Play Format: The format for play is Four-Ball stroke play as defined in Rule 31 per the USGA® Rules of Golf in which two players play as partners, each playing their own ball. The lower score of the partners is the score for the hole. If one partner fails to complete the hole there is no penalty. Amateurs Only: International Kings cup is open ONLY to amateur golfers holding an official GUI handicap Teams: Teams in the Irish Team Qualifiers may be formed by any combination of male participants (18 Years or older). Divisions: There are two divisions Open Division and Senior Division. The Open Division is open to all ages. The Senior Division is for Players 50 years of age and above prior to the provincial qualifier. A Player that is 50+ is allowed to compete in the Open Division, but a player that is under 50 is not allowed to compete in the Senior Division. Flights: Each Division has four flights. Championship, A-Flight, B-Flight and C-Flight Flight Handicaps: Championship 4.9 or less A Flight 5.0-9.9 B Flight 10.0-14.9 C Flight 15.0 and above A Team Handicap is determined by totalling the handicap index of player A and player B together and dividing it in half. Example Player A is a 10 handicap and player B is a 15 handicap totalling 25. Divide the total of 25 in half and the Team Handicap is 12.5. That team would be in the “B” Flight. No team can have a handicap dif-
ferential of more than 8 strokes between teammates. Example - a player that is a 10 handicap cannot play with a player that is a 24 handicap, unless that player drops his handicap down from a 24 to 18. Their team handicap would be 10+18=28/2 = 14. T
he Ursuline College U14 Gaelic team qualified for the Connacht final on Tuesday last after overcoming Glenamaddy Community School, Galway in an enthralling semi-final played in Michael Glavey’s GAA grounds in Roscommon. This was a thrilling encounter with excellent displays of football from two highly skilful sides. A tentative first half finished with the Ursuline girls
ahead by the narrowest of margins, 0-4points to 0-3. This left it all to play for in the second half! Ursuline were down by one with only 7minutes to go, however the Ursuline girls regrouped and increased the intensity to bring the game back to level terms. Excellent defending followed by some fantastic team work saw Helen Monaghan drive the ball to the back of the Glenamaddy net to
take the lead, and from then on the girls never looked back scoring three points in a row to win on a score line of 2-9 to 1-6. This was an excellent display of football from everyone involved, the girls worked hard for each and displayed great heart and determination to book their deserved place in the Connacht final against Carrick Community School in the coming weeks.

SATURDAY MORNING ROWING AT THE GARAVOGUE
St. John’s GAA Club notes Michael Mc Gowan RIP The St Johns club and the communities of Ferndale , Carraroe and Curry were shocked last Wednesday when news came of the untimely and tragic death of Michael Mc Gowan. Michael was a gentle giant of a man who was described by a neighbour as “the Mayor of Ferndale” – when something needed doing Michael led the way and achieved results. He was a loyal supporter of St Johns for whom his son Brian starred but he also had great time for his native Curry and for all Sligo county teams. He began coaching in our club with an Under 9 team and achieved immediate success when his charges won the City Board League. Over the years he has contributed greatly to the club and his witty comments along the side-line will be sadly missed. The esteem in which he was held was very visible in the large numbers who attended his reposing and the Mass of Resurrection in St John’s Church, Carraroe on Saturday and by the Guards of Honour provided by the St John’s and Curry clubs and also his work colleagues from Aurivo. To Michael’s wife Ann, son Brian, daughters Laura and Chloe, his sisters, brothers and relatives we extend our heart-felt sympathy. Ar dheis De go raibh se

IT SLIGO UNVEILS NEW SPORTS SCHOLARS
22 new recipients receive Sports Scholarship Awards for 2017 Awards span six counties and eight sports New awards are a €50,000 Institute allocation for Sports Scholarship scheme each year Former Stoke City footballer Ryan O’Reilly and multiple sprint athletics champion Zak Irwin were among 22 new recipients of IT Sligo Sports Scholarships for 2017, which were announced by the Institute on Monday. The awards provide financial and mentoring support to athletes of outstanding talent, many of whom may have already represented IT Sligo, their county or Ireland in their respective sports. Recipients are supported by IT Sligo in keeping up their sporting commitments at the same time as pursuing their educational commitments and goals. Cavan native Ryan O’Reilly is one of two Gold sports scholarship recipients this year. He spent five seasons with English Premier League club Stoke City before opting to return to Ireland and continue his education at IT Sligo where he is studying for a degree in business. He has represented the Republic of Ireland at every underage level. “Coming back to Ireland, I wanted to continue my education and to keep playing football,” said 21-year-old Ryan. “IT Sligo has given me the opportunity
to do that.” The other Gold Sports Scholarship recipient for 2017 is Sligo sprinter Zak Irwin who is a first year international marketing student. He is a multiple national title winner both indoors and outdoors and has previously represented Ireland at the World Junior Athletics Championships (2014). The list includes Donegal gaelic footballers Andrew McClean, Jamie Brennan and Michael Langan. The trio recently made their senior intercountry debuts for Donegal in the Dr McKenna Cup competition in Ulster. Sligo Rovers Under 19 footballers Shay Doherty from Sligo and Gary Higgins, a native of Ballyhaunis in Co Mayo, are also new scholarship recipients. While GAA and Soccer provide the bulk of the 22 new scholarship students, this year, basketball, equestrian and karate also feature with the awards spanning eight different sports in total. Nine-time Irish boxing champion and former World junior championship winner Ciara Ginty from Geesala in Co Mayo is also recognised. Congratulating the new sports scholars on their awards, Dr Brendan McCormack, President of IT Sligo said: “One of Institute’s core missions is to develop and nurture rounded graduates and individuals. It is why we place a strong
emphasis on the extra-curricular element to higher education, through programmes like our Sports Scholarship Scheme. “Each of our Sports Scholarship recipients has excelled in their chosen sports activity and in so doing they have enhanced IT Sligo’s reputation as an academic setting that values and rewards sporting prowess.” In addition to the first time recipients, a further 28 students had their existing sports scholarships renewed. These include Northern Ireland women’s soccer international Catherine Hyndman, IT Sligo Sigerson Cup captain Daragh McConnon and Irish international surfer Ronan Oerzten. IT Sligo allocates a €50,000 fund for the Sports Scholarships Scheme each year and all students are entitled to apply. Since its introduction in 2003, the IT Sligo Sports Scholarship programme has benefited students involved in a wide range of sports including soccer (ladies/men), Gaelic football (ladies/men), athletics basketball, surfing, boxing, camogie, hurling, golf, equestrian, lacrosse and martial arts.

Attention GAA Players!

ollowing good nutrition is important for GAA players as it will improve performance, aid with recovery from intense training sessions and help prepare for those match day demands. Players should be consistent with their meals eating at regular intervals throughout the day. At least three main meals are advised while incorporating snacks between meals. Important factors to keep on top of are fuelling adequately around training, allowing for optimal recovery and nutrient- timing around match day. Adequate fuelling before training will provide and maintain energy to the working muscles, promote growth and repair, and promote good immune function. Long high intensity training sessions requires carbohydrate as a primary fuel source due to the muscles utilising glycogen as their main supply. Pre training meal should contain carbohydrate and be consumed 2-4 hours before exercise or a pre training snack should be consumed 1-2 hours before exercise. Good sources include oats, bread, grains, banana, rice, pasta, white potato, sweet potato. Players should eat as soon as possible after training with carbohydrate being the main source to allow for the recovery process to commence. To aid with optimal recovery, consume complete lean protein in the first hour after exercise to allow for muscle damage repair and reconditioning of the muscle. Good sources include meat, fish, eggs, nuts, beans and dairy. Nutrient timing around a GAA match is essential to maintain steady blood sugar levels throughout the game. Intake of easily digestible carbohydrate 2-3 hours before the match can improve performance by fuelling the muscles appropriately. Pre- hydrate 3-4 hours before the match and consume fluids with pre- exercise meal or snack. Keep taking small sips of fluids at regular intervals throughout the game to avoid dehydration. After the match it is important to replace the fluid and electrolytes lost in sweat and restore fluid balance as quickly as possible. Drinks containing sodium help to do so by holding on to the ingested fluid. Refuel the muscles by consuming a carbohydrate source within an hour after the match, along with a lean protein source for repair and recovery. Carbohydrate and protein containing drinks can contribute to re-fuelling. Hope this helps, best of luck and enjoy the game! IT SLIGO INTRODUCES NEW SPORT WITH BUSINESS DEGREE
IT Sligo's new Sport With Business Honours Degree will enable students to combine their passion for sport with sound business acumen and leadership skills.
S
tudents who want to combine their passion for sport with sound business acumen and leadership skills now have a learning opportunity to realise both ambitions, thanks to a new honours degree course at Institute of Technology, Sligo. The Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Sport with Business is a new three-year programme which is now available on the 2017 CAO application system (Course code: SG147). The course is a fusion of
professionalism of sport and how the changing needs of the consumer have transformed the business of sport into one of the most lucrative and fastest growing industries.” The new course aims to equip the student with the knowledge and professional skills and competencies required to work within the sports/fitness/leisure environment. They will gain an understanding of the social and cultural factors which influence sport, while the business subjects will provide the necessary knowledge and skills in management, finance and computing to administer and manage in a commercial setting. Fostering a culture of entrepreneurship will also be a core element of the new programme, according to Ann Higgins, Head of Department in Marketing, Tourism and Sport at IT Sligo. “Sport and physical activity is
big business,” she says. “This course is a natural evolution from IT Sligo’s Recreation And Leisure degree which has been hugely popular over the last decade.” We aim to provide a course to help students harness their passion of sport and the power of business.” The new Sport With Business degree programme also includes a 12-week work placement in year two. “Historically, a third of our graduates in this area have become entrepreneurs/selfstarters. We want to continue to nurture that start-up culture, but the programme will also prepares you for a wide range of career opportunities ranging from sports development, health promotion, marketing, management to teaching, coaching as well as, of course, setting up your own business. T
he Ursuline College added two trophies to their basketball cabinet this year when their U16 and U19 girls were crowned North West League Champions last week with comprehensive wins over Loreto, Letterkenny and Colaiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon. The U16 team came up against a strong force from Loreto, Letterkenny. In a competitive game with both teams taking the lead on numerous
occasions the Ursuline girls showed great skill and determination and proved too strong for the Donegal side winning on a score line of 56-35. The U19 team competed against a strong, young Ballyshannon side. This was a thrilling encounter between two highly skilful sides. A tentative opening saw both sides struggle to register in the early stages. Ballyshannon started the strongest taking an 8-0 lead, displaying some decisive driving and
scoring. However the Ursuline girls regrouped to increase the intensity and bring the game back to level terms. Excellent defending followed by some fantastic scores saw the Ursuline girls take the lead early in the second quarter, and from then on they never looked back, winning on a score line of 58-43. Both teams now prepare for the AllIreland playoffs which will take place in January.

CONNACHT CROSS COUNTRY Calry was the venue for the recent North Connacht Schools Cross Country. It was a bitingly cold day for running but conditions underfoot were very good. The Minor Girls started the day’s procedings and Cliona
Walsh, Caoimhe Connor, Maeve Casserly and Ruth Monaghan all ran well. In the Boys Minor race, Ross Doherty and Ciaran Kavanagh competed well. There was a good run also from Maeve Mooney in the Junior Girls. However
performance of the day came from Michael Morgan in the Junior Boys race. Michael led from the start and, just when 2 Westport Athletes looked to have pulled him back, he put in a lung bursting change of pace to stride away brilliantly to
victory. In the Inter Girls, Tara Carty, Aoife Morris, Ailbhe Morgan and Eimear Joyce had strong races as had Jack Connor, Sam McDermott and Dara Williams in the Boys section. In the Senior Girls, Rianna
Connor and Mary B. McDonagh competed really well. Leo Doherty was 3rd in the Boys race with Conor Melvin and Keelan Deering also running well. Well done to Tommy Craddock for an expertly organized event.

SLIGO MAKE IT SIX FROM SEVEN! Sligo RFC 37 Seapoint RFC 12 Sligo's rich vein of Ulster Bank League form continued with a well orchestrated bonus point win over a lively Seapoint outfit at Hamilton Park on Saturday. Sligo have now won six of their last seven All Ireland League matches and are well positioned, in third place in the table, perfectly poised to give themselves a realistic shot at promotion come the business end of the season. On a beautiful Strandhill winter sunny afternoon, with the pitch in perfect condition, Sligo kicked off playing towards the airport end. Seapoint, eager to make an early impression ran hard at the Sligo defence but a crossing infringement gave Jack Keegan the early opportunity to open the scoring for Sligo with a well struck penalty from forty metres. Seapoint responded and tried to impose their impressive high tempo game on their hosts but Sligo's defence , with centre Daire Byrne particularly prominent, worked hard to close the danger down. The home sides defensive effort paid off after ten minutes when pressure forced a dropped ball on the Seapoint 10 meter line and the alert Sligo winger Conor Kerins fluidly scooped up the ball and raced to the posts for Sligo's opening five pointer. Keegan chipped over the conversion to put his team into a ten point lead with ten minutes gone. With both sides willing to put width on the ball, the match continued at an excellent pace but
both defences were coping well and neither side were able to capitalise until Sligo made the breakthrough on the half hour. Byrne burst through the middle on the half way line before linking up in the Seapoint 22. The ball was quickly recycled and moved left to the perfectly positioned Conor Mitchell and the powerful prop made no mistake in touching down wide on the left to move Sligo into a fifteen point lead. Sligo continued to press and picked up their third try just before the break. A super Shane O'Hehir steal allowed tearaway flanker Diarmuid O'Dowd-Hill make an excellent break up the left before linking with powerhouse Jamie Bowes, the second row cantered towards the line and was hauled down five yards short. Quick recycling from left to right gave Mark Rooney the opportunity the chance to expertly step inside the defence and dot down under the posts. Keegan added the extras and followed up with another well struck penalty resulting from an off the ball hit on O'Hehir, right on the stroke of half time to put Sligo twenty five nil ahead at the break. With the lowering sun behind , Sligo started the second half at a whirlwind pace. The Seapoint kick off was collected and outhalf Michael Wells immediately moved the ball wide. Centres Rooney and Byrne combined well to make ground before linking up with livewire scrum half Ryan Feehily who raced in under the posts to secure the four try bonus point. Sligo continued to press in all
facets of play, Mitchell, O'Hehir and the excellent Mark Keegan were on top at scrum time, Ciaran Cassidy was proving an able partner to Bowes in the engine room and captain Shane Boyle at number eight was leading his troops with maturity. Flankers Coulter and O'Dowd-Hill were a menace at every breakdown with O'DowdHill's lineout work also proving a thorn in the visitors attack. Feehily and Wells were dictating the tempo with their usual assurance and man of the match Byrne and Rooney were lording play in midfield. Wingers Calum Goddard and Kerins were solid in defence and a big threat going forward and full back Jack Keegan once again was proving his importance to the teams effort with some excellent entries into the attacking line. To their credit, the vistors refused to yield and hit back with a well worked score from flanker Lyons before Byrne added a well deserved score following a great burst from Kerins. Seapoint tagged on a second try before the ref signalled the cessation of play but it was too little too late as Sligo had secured the maximum spoils for the day. Sligo now take a week break before travelling south to face Middleton RFC on Feb 11th Sligo: Jack Keegan, Callum Goddard, Mark Rooney, Daire Byrne, Mike Wells, Ryan Feehily, Mark Keegan, Shane O'Hehir, Conor Mitchell, Jamie Bowes, Ciaran Cassidy, Simon Coulter, Diarmuid O'Dowd-Hill, Shane Boyle (Capt)

MAGIC ROADS, TRAGIC LOVE STORIES AND NONCHALANT SHEEP! ONE DAY CYCLE LOOPS IN SLIGO
a kilometre on both sides approaching the valley. It’s ideal for a short family cycle or a day hike!
O
n October 30th when the clocks were wound back to signal the start of shorter winter days, I wasn’t expecting the summery phrase “Grand day isn’t it?!” uttered with such frequency! Luckily, the unaccustomed mild winter has increased such positive weather musings and in turn, cycle trips in the countryside. It’s hard to beat a brisk cycle along twisting rural boreens in unseasonal winter sunshine. We are lucky to be living in a part of Ireland where little country roads and boreens encourage you to explore. Roads that tease you of what’s ahead, with sly concealing curves and enshrouding hills,
Gleniff Barytes Mills If you are arriving by car you can park at the Gleniff Mill. The mill, which is no longer in operation, was once used to process barytes, a mineral ore that was mined from the mountains encircling the valley. that entices, and pulls you on and on until your legs burn! Sligo has plenty of wandering country roads and it’s easy to connect them to form loops. Cyclists love looking for loops on a map. Everything is new until you arrive back at the start again! So with sandwiches and a flask of tea in tow let us take you on a gentle jaunt around Gleniff, in the north of the county. The Gleniff Horseshoe is about 20km from Sligo town, 20km from Bundoran and 60km from Enniskillen, the three biggest urban centres in the region. It’s a short loop at 10km and has a gradual ascent for about

Nowadays the ore is mainly used in plastics paints and as Barium for X-Rays. The mines were in operation for over 120 years and employed many within the local area. Traces of the mines located high up the mountain cliffs are still visible along with old tramway tracks. The mill has been restored as a public amenity with picnic benches, forest trails and wooden sculptures.

The Magic Road! The mountains of Tieve Baun, Truskmore and Benwhisken rise to the back of the valley and defiantly face the nearby Atlantic. Ochre bracken and windswept hawthorn trees cling to the peaty soil, while nonchalant sheep graze the mountain slopes. Luckily, for your convenience, ‘the little people’ have cast their magic upon a section of the loop (about half a km from the mill) and created a magic road! If you stop your car, it will roll
uphill as if being pulled into the valley by a mysterious force! We tried it on the bikes but it didn’t quite have the same effect! Of course cynicism dispels ‘the magic’ with logic and science but it doesn’t tell a good tale! Diarmud and Grainne’s Cave. The valley was once dotted with little cottages where stories of legends, told over open turf fires, stoked the imagination of those inside. One particular tale that mirrors the tragedy and
romance often pinned on the Irish psyche is that of Diarmud and Grainne. As legend goes a cave high up the mountain was the last resting place of Diarmud, who died of wounds inflicted by the Wild Boar of Benbulben. The great boar was coaxed into cornering and attacking Diarmud by Grainne’s jealous admirer Fionn MacCool. A distraught Grainne begged Fionn to use his magical powers to save Diarmud’d fading life but Fionn refused and watched his
former friend die. Broken hearted she took her own life and her last view was that of Gleniff, through the mouth of the cave. The swirling winds continue to keen the tragic last whispers of the doomed lovers throughout the valley. The cave is 400 metres from the old ruins of the school house, which doesn’t evoke much fear until you are facing it. Most of the
ascent is vertical! We managed to get within reach of a dangling rope that’s in place to help you up the last 25 metres to the cave. Unable to trust a rope in a valley of magic roads and mythical grieving ghosts, we made our excuses and headed back down to the bikes!
