Open Water Swimming with Mark Foley
I
t’s not quite a year since I got into “Open Water” to swim as part of my Training in the project and documentary “Bressie’s Ironmind”. I could do laps and laps and laps of the pool, but I struggled that first day in open water and it built up massive anxieties and fears within me, and while I worked on it throughout the Ironmind project and got through various events, it was not easy and those anxieties and fears never fully eased. I remember saying to our Swim coach on Ironmind Carole Walsh, that I wouldn’t do open water again once our final event was done… .! January 2016 and something started stirring within me, you start talking to yourself…maybe I should look at this triathlon stuff this year, it’s challenging, it involves swimming, hmmm, some training, I should be ok, work on my mindfulness techniques, that will help… I want to do the Dublin 70.3 Ironman in August… that involves “OPEN WATER SWIMMING” a shiver goes down the spine – feck it —- I sign up ! – And enter THE METALMAN SWIM SERIES The Metalman Swim series involves 3 races in June. There is a sprint league option and a distance league option. The Sprint option for the 3 swims is 500metres, 750 metres and 1km. The Distance option involves 3 swims at 1km, 1500 metres and 2km – the dates – 4th, 11th and 25th June. Points are given for your position in each swim. It’s a non-profit
group headed by the inspiring Shane O’ Doherty with the aim of promoting safe open water swimming and also by donating any proceeds to local groups like The civil defence, and the Kayak Club both organisations who volunteer themselves to the utmost safety of each event. With my targeted event in August, the Metalman series in June, was perfect, it meant I had to face the open water early and get on top of it by the end of June, a full 7 weeks before the 70.3 Ironman Triathlon in Dublin. I was in the water in early May, it was cold, but 400 metres was clocked and over the next few weeks, that grew 800 meters, on track in a straight line was my 1200 metres and one really calm challenge that day and again a day I got 1850 metres in…. I was respectable time and one I was getting comfortable, anxieties personally happy with. were easing, and I began to There was two weeks till the enjoy it, if that was possible! As I third race, but on that 3rd weektrained myself up I met many end of June I had the Mullaghother people who had their own more triathlon in the morning anxieties about open water and then the Channel Cup swim swimming and were also facing in the evening, - yes open water it, it helped, it was comforting in twice in one day, INSANE comes a strange way, and you knew to mind and while I got through you weren’t alone. I joined up the triathlon in good shape I with Sligo triathlon club and took think it was only when I was in the part in their open water training water during the Channel Cup sessions – and these sessions are Swim that I MULDOON actually admitted to brilliant, lead and coached by PHOTOS: FRANCIS myself yes this is INSANITY at its great people who have forebest!! Don’t get me wrong, my seen every eventuality and ease anxieties hadn’t disappeared, those fears and to say the least but I was coping better and if get you swimming – open water truth be known I was relishing it in style! Kevin O’Donnell, Kate parts…. Hawney, Colm Casey and Ross Race 3 – 2km swim – The day McLynn are our trusted coaches before the venue for the swim and also I know many people was changed to Lough Gill and have benefited from the excela marked route of 1km that the lent coaching and experience from Shelia Ryan and Ray McDaid. Race 1 – I had signed up for the distance league, so 1km was my first test - two laps of a 500 metre course – the morning was beautiful, the sea calm, if all swims could be just like this – I never had experienced swimming with large groups in race environment . It was MAD – bump n grind comes to mind, bumping cars in the water, yes it was nervy and different anxieties arose, but it was class. A respected time recorded by me, one that I was quietly delighted with. Race 2 – 1500 metres, another good day, not as excellent as the previous race but still good conditions. A tougher swim and a little less bump n grind, keeping
AIRE approved Est 1997
Sprint league competitors covered once and the Distance league competitors twice. The move to the lake possibly brought extra anxieties to some, but to me, and to this day I’m amazed by this, I was completely calm, the actual distance of the swim was probably the only thing I might have worried about, just questioning my fitness… Another fine evening and as soon as I entered the lake, which would be my first swim in Lough Gill, I was comfortable, nice and steady I told myself, kept good lines and an easy swim stroke, one lap done and I was feeling good, half way around the second lap, I began to smile to myself at this stage I knew I was going to finish, I knew I was actually loving this open water swimming, and that for me I was going to achieve something that
was very personal to me, as I turned the last buoy into the last straight, I upped the stroke rate, lets finish strong. Again a respectable time and one I was really proud of personally…this time last year I wasn’t even in open water and now I had just completed the distance league in The Metalman Swim Series….. For me that Saturday was as good as if I had won a stage at the Tour de France —If there wasn’t a Swim Series I would never have done it and massive thanks and appreciation must go to Shane and his team and also to the Channel Cup Swim Organisation and all the coaches involved in Open Water Swimming. They are unique events and more are to follow, with the Lough Gill Swim, The Night Swim and The Glencar Swim – check them out!

Eamon McAndrew Blog - May-June
Mullaghamore Sprint Triathlon (5th Place)
W
ell it’s been a while since my last blog and a lot has happened. My original plan of competing in the National Triathlon Super Series has not materialised due to work and family commitments I simply do not have the time. However, with multi-sport you get the chance to carry three disciplines. To this end I have started the focus on running and have re-assessed my season goals. Goals are very important as they make you focus and work towards achieving them. My problem with setting goals is I tend to set the bar pretty high. Believe and Achieve-goes hand in hand with-just commit and do the training and hopefully all going well it will come together on the day. So what have I been up to? Ballina Half Marathon (Winner 1:14:06) For years I have wanted to do this race as it’s my home town and finishes at the rugby club in the Quay-my old neighbourhood. The form felt good and my weight was down which is always a good indicator. The guy who had won for the previous three years was also out. The main competition was going to come from John Byrne who had recently went 2.30 hrs in the Rotterdam marathon and my friend and arch competitive enemy Gary
Track Meet-Sligo IT (5km -15.34)
Higgins. The plan was to run with John and Gary as I had only ever run a half marathon in a triathlon. The pace went off at 3.30 per km and I felt very relaxed. It was a joy to run in Ballina and I knew all the marshals who had a big ‘Hon the Mouse’ when I passed them. At about 12 km I still felt very comfortable but Gary started to take on a bit of water and dropped off the pace. At 13 km I just felt really good and sort of went into an auto pilot and increased the pace slightly. The Ballina course is slightly uphill to the half way point and slightly down hill home. A gap started to open between myself and John so I turned the screw and ran hard for the next 5kmbasically I shifted into top gear. I was unsure would I have the strength to hold pace and finish strong as I did not have a lot of long runs done in training. At 18km at the pond in the woods my kids were there with Lorraine ‘THE LEGEND’ Carey with a caffeine gel for me. Seeing the kids along with the gel gave me a big boost. Also running through Belleek wood was pure magic. When I came out of the woods I was 3 km from the finish with the final run through part of the town and down the Quay. Ballina really is a beautiful town. I looked at my pace and it had dropped back to 3.35. At this point I was starting to take on a bit of water. I was however not
going to be beaten on my home patch. I thought of my mother and imagined her at the finish line as I knew if she was still with us she would be waiting for me with a big proud smile. The last 1km I just smiled all the way, then came the finish and the glory. I was delighted. What a fantastic race, it had everything and is a credit to the organisers. Everything from the registration, reception and the prize giving was executed to perfection. The reception after the race was an absolute feast and very social. The prizes were top end-2 nights in the Ice House if you don’t mind. This race is now an annual event for me.
Cliffoney 8km (2nd 26.30) I was not too sure about this one. I did not intend to run it as I had a slight strain in my calf. Anyway I got home from work and was going to go for a run with the dog at 7pm when I said what the hell. The dog did not talk to me for the rest of the evening. You see I only live a mile from Cliffoney so there was no hassle. The man to beat was Liam Feely and a superb runner. I had a chat with my old pal Skinny and told him I was going to run on Liam’s shoulder and see what happens at the end of the race. Bang to gun went and I went with it. The rush of adrenaline went straight into the veins and produced a 3.00 min opening km and a gap of 40m. Liam reacted and closed up to me at 2km. Then bang again and away I went and another 40m up the road. From there I ran strong and was hoping for the best. Liam paced the race well and at 6km I sprung a leak and started taking on water. At 7km Liam ran up to me and passed me. He put 35 seconds into me in the final 1km. I had blown the head gasket and learned a valuable lesson-Manners Mouse. I was a bit disappointed on the execution of the race as I felt I did not give myself the best chance to perform to my best. Mullaghamore Sprint Triathlon (5th Place) Although I had committed to running I was still swimming three times a week as it is great for recovery. Also I have been cycling once a week, this usually occurs when I am minding a niggle and cannot run. So I had a half eye on Mullaghmore as this is a local race that I have always wanted to win. I swam well, but I got found out on the bike which in turn resulted in fatigue and a bad run. You see biking will help your run but running will destroy your bike. And this seems to have been the case. I did however have to try and run down my club mate Kev O Donnell for the club honours of
Ballina Half Marathon first man home for Sligo Tri. I caught Kev 200m from the finish. I was pushing hard as you can see from the photo-I said to Kev run with me and I will sprint you for the finish. And so we did. I left it to Kev to pull the trigger. He waited until about 40m from home and went for it. Man did he go for it. My response was to slow and I was beaten by a Nose. Fair play to Kev he took it to a whole new level. Track Meet-Sligo IT (5km -15.34) This was the Olympic Qualifier for Mary Cullen whose target was 15.24 for qualification to Rio. Unfortunately, it was not to be on the night. Hopefully she can regroup and have another crack at it. Firstly, let me give credit to Dermot McDermot and Thomas McBride on organising a fantastic event. As part of the evening events there was a series of 5 km paced races with the objective of running a PB. I was not sure where I am currently at plus I have never raced track before. I had set a target of sub 16 min. The pacer went off at a pace for a 15.20 finish which was a little hot for me but initially I followed him and then dropped off after a lap as I did not have the confidence in myself to hold the pace. With the group coming behind I sort of got caught in no man’s land for a few laps. At lap six the group closed up and Liam Feely took up the running for a lap then followed by John Byrne for lap seven. I remember at the end of lap seven Dermot McDermot shouting at us to work together. I decided to do my shift so I took the front. I just ran hard and did not look back until I completed the lap. I had managed to open a decent gap on the lads. I was now three laps from home and found myself in no man’s land ‘again’. There was one runner ahead of me with the pacer about 20 seconds ahead. I was doing the maths in my head that if the pacer was running for 15.20 and I was 20 seconds down that I was on for a sub 16
11
SLIGO SPORT AUGUST, 2016
min 5km if I could hold the pace. It was at this point that I really started to feel the support from the crowd. Everywhere I looked people were shouting ‘GO on the Mouse’. Skinny was starting to go bananas on the microphone. I heard him saying sub nine-hour ironman and something about running a 2.30 marathon in Dublin. Emma and Noah were jumping up and down and shouting. This pushed me to run harder and so I did. What a buzz to be at full throttle and in control. I started to close on the runner ahead. I do not know if he was slowing down or if I was getting faster as I had no watch. Every time I went through the tent on the finishing straight I came out reenergised. The last 3x 400m felt like three separate intervals the only difference was there was no recovery. It felt great, the machine was at full-bore and humming. I crossed the line for what I thought was a sub 16 min 5km. It was actually 15.34 and a PB. I was delighted with my performance. Again credit to all who turned out to support and to Dermot and Thomas for organising a great event. What’s Next Next up is Ballina 10km, I love racing in Ballina because it allows me to tap into something I cannot really explain-it basically makes you want to win and run out of your skin. Then it’s back to training with the lads for North Sligo AC as we build as a team for the National Half Marathon Team Champions in August. Running with North Sligo AC has really brought on my running and
Sligo Tri Club Members
certainly made the training very enjoyable. So it looks like I am doing a bit of a Benjamin Button on it. I am getting faster as I get older. I am now slowly committing to running for the foreseeable further. However, I do have unfinished business with Ironman. The magic sub threehour marathon. Thanks to Jason McMorrow (Sligo Sports Massage) for setting my new goal for the Dublin City Marathon. A tall order but as I said earlier always set the bar high or you will never know how fast you can go. Sligo Tri News Club members have been very active as the race season heats up. We have had some super performances in both Westport and Mullaghmore Triathlons. A special mention most go to the Brave souls who completed in
Mick Walton The death recently occurred of Mick Walton of Killmacowen Ballisodare and formerly of Sunderland. Mick was one of the founder members of triathlon in Sligo with the Metalman club. Mick was the man to beat in Triathlon back in the day and was still competing with STC until very recently. He showed many a man half his age a clean pair of heels. A great advocate for sport and particularly Triathlon. His family through Voya seaweed baths have been sponsors of the club on numerous occasions. Micks charm and good humour will be sadly missed from all his friends at Sligo Tri may he rest in peace.

the Galway Half Ironman and full Ironman’s recently. The fantastic Irish summer produced a cracking day for the event. It rained and blew a small Gail all day. But this did not deter our brave soldier’s. We had one man who decided he wanted to stay out in it all day. Trevor McSharry put in a Steller performance in the Ironman race to bring home a 11.30 hr Ironman on a testing coarse and bleak conditions. Well done to all and congratulation’s. Hazelwood Triathlon The club is very busy organising the Hazelwood Super Sprint and National Series Olympic events scheduled for August the 6th. This will show case the beautiful Hazelwood and will attract a top field of athletes from around the county. This is an event not to be missed.

St John’s GAA Club Family Fun Day T
he inaugral St John’s GAA club Family Sports and Fun Day 2016 was held on Sunday 3rd July and was a great success. The day was organised to give something back to all the children who trained hard every Saturday morning since the beginning of April. The large attendance took full advantage of the beautiful warm sunny day and ventured down to Cuilbeg on the outskirts of Sligo town to enjoy a great bit of fun and games. The afternoon was thoroughly enjoyed by all that attended, with children from tots to teens participating. A large number of children from the club attended and they brought their Mammies and Daddies along. Lots of lolipops were won in the different age races. The three legged race with Parents and Children taking part was very exciting and a big hit. So too was the egg and spoon race. The ‘penalty shoot-out’ attrached big interest for even the smallest boys and girls and some new footballing talent was discovered on the day. The Bar-B-Q was operated at full capacity by ‘chef for the day’ Charlie Kelly with great help from Darren O Connor and Alan Banks. The big tasty burgers and hot dogs, generously suppliied by Kieran Roddy from the Food Experience were snapped off the grill as fast as the lads could cook. The day ended with a dance routine performed by all the boys and girls who gave a lively and entertaining performance. Each child came away a winner and were rewarded with a certificate in recognition of them participating in the Go Games with the kids from the U6 academy being awarded a medal for their achievement. Feedback from all who attended was very positive and we are looking forward to a repeat event in 2017. Best of all the children were smiling throughout the day! Thanks to all parents, family and friends who supported the day. A massive thanks also to all the business’s who very kindly sponsored some fantastic prizes for our raffle.

THE SEARCH IS ON FOR IRELAND’S SPORTING HEROES

The Hidden Hearing Heroes Awards 2016 Open for Nominations
H
idden Hearing is once again calling on people across Ireland to nominate their Sporting Heroes for 2016. The Heroes will be announced at a national awards ceremony hosted by broad-
caster Mary Kennedy in Dublin on Monday 5th September. Nominations close on 5th August. Now in their sixth year, the Hidden Hearing Heroes Awards recognise the achievements of people, young and old, who have made a significant contribution to Irish society, in their community, workplace, family or through sporting excellence. The Sporting Hero is always a popular category we are calling on people all over Ireland to nominate someone they feel has overcome serious physical challenges and adversity to excel in sport. Last year’s Sporting Hero was Cillian Dunne from Tipperary who was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus which means he has to use a wheelchair due to paralysis of his lower limbs. Cillian said “I was really honoured to be awarded a Hidden Hearing Award last year, My real passion in life is sport. I have been taking part in sports with the Irish Wheelchair Association since I
was five. This year the World Games were held in Prague and I was delighted to win silver in the 200m and 400m and bronze in the 100m. I continue to train 6 days a week both in the gym and on the road and have never allowed my disability to hold me back. My dream is to represent Ireland at the Paralympics in Tokyo 2020 and I’m working hard to get there”. The Hidden Hearing Heroes Awards were first established in 2011 and have grown in size significantly since its first year. The nominations for Hidden Heroes 2016 are expected to surpass all other years. This year’s Hidden Heroes will be recognised across 10 categories. The winners of each category will be announced at the Hidden Hearing Heroes Awards ceremony in the Doubletree Hilton on Tuesday 5th September 2016. The nominations are now open and will remain open until 5th August 2016. Launching this year’s Call for Nominations, Activist and campaigner, Joanne O’Riordan said: “I am truly honoured to join some of the amazing heroes from last year to launch this year’s Hidden Heroes campaign for Hidden Hearing. Hidden Heroes celebrates people throughout Ireland who have triumphed over adversity in their lives. I strongly believe that it’s not the disability, it’s the ability of the person, that’s what matters. No Limbs, No Limits is my motto and you can do anything you want if you just believe in yourself. We all face obstacles in our lives, it's only a matter of overcoming them. Each and every day I live by the motto of what I fail at today I will overcome and conquer tomorrow." People throughout the country can nominate a Hero online now at www.hiddenhearing.ie/heroes, in Hidden Hearing branches nationwide or by sending the details of the nominee to Hidden Hearing Ltd., Hidden Heroes Awards, 3030 Lake Drive, Citywest Business Campus, Freepost F1570, Dublin 24. THE RACE IS ON T
he Warriors Run is a famously challenging date on the athletics calendar, and on the social calendar too! Kate Winter meets with some members of the committee to find out more about one of Sligo’s most beloved and longstanding annual events.
When and how did the first Warriors Run come about? 1985 was the initial run. That year was the first time they did the Midsummer Festival, and there were lots of music and arts events. There was the Queen Maeve Festival, done by Aengus McNally, and the Sligo Triathlon was a part of it too. That was to take place on the Sunday, and what was decided was that there’d be a smaller run, a bit of a warm up, for the Friday evening. So they decided to bring it out to Strandhill and use the Queen Maeve element by starting the run at the beach front and finishing it at the top of the mountain. It was named the Warriors Run that year and we never changed the name since, though the run itself has changed a fair bit. How have the run and the festival around it developed over the years? The following year, they extended it so that the runners had to come all the way back down to the beachfront! Besides anything else it was a handier place for a finish line... There was a big buzz about it in the village, with participation growing over the years. It was on our 25th anniversary that we really pushed the boat out with advertising, nationally, online and in running magazines. That year we had around four
PHOTOS: BRENDA MCCALLION & IAN RYAN
hundred runners, and from then on it was a national event, which just grew and grew, To the point where we had to put a cap on it in fact, we can only take the nine hundred runners that we have now, and competition can be fierce for those places! And the festival around it is really spectator led, because there is always such a great buzz. We put on music and bits and pieces around the run itself in the village. There was one year we decided to make it a week long, and we did have events on every night, but it nearly killed us! So we’ve spread a lot of those events across the year, things like sports days, guitar festivals, and the Culleenamore races.
Just how challenging is the run? What are the main challenges, or differences between this and your average Irish run? It’s the mountain! It’s because it’s a hill and road race. You’re scrambling up rock at some points and you’ve got a few hundred other people all around you, there’s no denying that’s scary. We’ve changed the route a few times, and now it’s one way, which makes it that bit less hairy. But only the top athletes will actually run the whole thing, most of the others will take their time over certain terrain. It’s certainly a gruelling race. These days you have the likes of Hell And Back, where you’re getting electrocuted and frozen along the way, so it’s not that bad, all things considered! We’re still one of the toughest, but there’s such an element of craic and camaraderie, I think that’s truly what makes the Warriors Run stand out. We have people coming back every single year to do it and there’s a huge local demand for places. That speaks volumes, really.
Micki Murray, Helen Conway and Martina Craig - Photo: Cliodhna McGowan Any stand out memories or stories from your years on the sidelines? Well John Lenehan was our main man. He won the first three races and on the twenty first anniversary he came back and won it again. He came back for the twenty fifth but he was injured so he only came third. He wrote a book in which the Warriors Run features largely! There was also one year we had a guy come over from Spain and he was booting it, it would have definitely been a course record... Except that it was a bit misty and he took off on the wrong path on the way back down. He was very upset about it, but we gave him a wee bottle of whiskey as compensation! And then there was the Ethiopian fella who won the run without barely breaking a sweat. He arrived back and did a few
laps of the Strand Celtic pitch to warm down when he came back. Apparently all along the route he was admiring the flora and fauna and commenting on what a beautiful place this is! Then he went on the next day to do the Longford Marathon... There was one elderly couple who used to do the run, they were the reason we started our broom wagon. One year around 5.30 in the evening, we knew they were still out there somewhere and we had to go looking for the, We found them on their way back alright, but they had stopped to pick some flowers along the way. Registration has become a bit of an event in itself in Strandhill village, hasn’t it? From listening to feedback we decided to make some changes. From the beginnings, when runners would just line up,
first come, first served on the day of the race, to when we took it all online and there was a mad scramble for tickets, with people all over the country trying to log on and confirm their place, it was always a fast process. But when it really got big and locals were missing out on places, we had to bring in the new system. So we have 150 places available in The Strand Bar and The Draft House, which locals can come along and snag on registration night before we go live online. And yes, it sometimes turns into a bit of a session along the way! Anything new or special to look forward to this year? Given that it’s 1916, we have a little surprise this year, but we can’t tell you what it is! The Warriors Run Takes Place on Saturday 27th August in Strandhill Village

HOW TO TEACH A CHILD TO CYCLE IN 30 MINUTES the rider’s weight. It’s best to stand behind the bike and child, and wedge the rear wheel between your feet and calves. Support them with your hands under the armpits, so they’ve got complete control of the bike – it’s easier on the back for you, too.
I
t’s a massive moment for any child (and their bike-mad parent) – learning to ride on your own, without stabilisers or support. But there are real pitfalls to avoid, so what is the best way to teach a child to cycle? According to Isla Rowntree, founder of hugely successful children’s bike company Islabikes, there are certain steps to follow to make it easier. First things first, the best way to get a child started on a pedal bike is by giving them a balance bike to practise on first, says Isla. The child learns how to balance and steer a two-wheeler, without the complication of pedalling and taking your feet off the ground at the same time.
Choose a suitable area
Many children learn to ride with stabilisers, but they’re a no-no for Isla. “We don’t recommend that for most children, as it holds the bike in a rigid upright position, so they don’t learn to lean the bike in order to balance and steer,” she adds. 1. Gauge if the child is ready Most children will be ready to learn between 3.5 and 4.5 years of age. If they’re not ready, it’s usually pretty obvious right away, and they won’t get the hang of moving the pedals in circles quickly. If children see other kids riding, they’ll get some sort of idea about turning the pedals. Remember, children are hardwired to learn to walk and run, but not to cycle.
2. Choose a suitable area It’s important to choose a suitable area for their first lesson. It can be tempting to choose soft grass as it’ll give a softer landing, but this is actually harder to pedal on. What you actually want is a smooth and fairly flat tarmac surface that’ll let the child get some rolling momentum, ideally with plenty of space so the child can roam around, and of course away from traffic. 3. Get the bike set up Make sure you buy the right bike size – don’t put them on a bike that’s too big in the hope they’ll ‘grow into it’. Set the saddle so the child can get the balls of their feet on the ground. It’s tempting to go for setting the saddle low enough that they can put flat feet on the ground, but that makes the pedalling action more difficult, as their knees will come up too high and interfere with the steering, and make gaining balance more difficult. 4. Support the child in their first efforts It’s tempting to hold on to the saddle and handlebars, but you’ll be interfering with how the bike leans and responds to
5. Gradually let go (but stay ready to catch them) As they gain confidence riding you can gradually let go, but stay ready to grab them under the armpits if necessary. When you’re running behind them, you can guide their body and help them to understand how the bike responds to leaning, show them how to corner and make S-turns. If they’re ready to learn to ride, they’ll find their balance and be pedalling forward quite quickly, usually within one session of half an hour or so. 6. Starting off on their own Once they’ve got the hang of pedalling forward and balancing, you can show them how to set off on their own. Position the pedal of their stronger foot into the 2 o’clock position, and get the child to put their foot on the pedal. Tell them to push down hard on that pedal while pushing on the ground on the other leg. It will take a few practice goes before they get the hang of it. 7. Learning to brake It’s sometimes easier to
Get the bike set up
introduce the concept of the brakes without the child actually riding – so ask them to walk alongside the bike and pull on the brake levers to see what happens. They will pull on the levers pretty hard to begin with. You can then encourage them, while walking, to squeeze the brakes more slowly.
Once they’ve got the hang of that, put them back on the bike and have a few goes. They’ll usually brake effectively, but forget to put their feet down – so be ready to catch! Soon they will be riding without you running behind them. 8. Try, try again Practice is key to getting the hang of it. But remember that every child’s different, and the point at which they’re ready to ride varies. Be careful not to make it into a stressful experience for the child, no matter how keen you are for them to join you on rides. With any luck, they’ll love practising this new skill, and the freedom it brings. Oh, and don’t forget the protective gear, particularly at this early stage – a helmet is essential, and cycling mitts can help prevent scuffed hands. Long trousers such as tracksuit bottoms and shirts with sleeves are better than bare arms and legs, as they’ll help protect from minor grazes. Boots or trainers are better than sandals, too.

Noelle Gormley being presented with the Connacht Cup Contined from previous page Paddy came on board and eight weeks later Sligo went on to win the All Ireland Junior title along with current member of the county team Noelle Gormley, Stephenie O’Reilly, Jacqueline Mulligan, Elaine O’Reilly, Sinead McTiernan, Ruth Goodwin and Bernice Bynre. Sligo went on to win national success when they got the better of Waterford in the league division 3 final which was played in Parnell park on a scoreline 212 – 2-8 which ensured Sligo would play in division 2 of the league for 2016. It was a tough campaign for them in the division 2 but they ensured that they would remain in that division when they won a playoff against Meath to keep their status for 2017 which was massive boost for the Sligo Ladies approaching the Championship. Sligo will face Wexford or Louth in All Ireland QuarterFinal after winning the Connacht Title. The game itself will take place on 13 August. Sligo will be hoping to call on Irish International soccer player Emma Hansberry for the knockouts stages of the All-Ireland Series.
Overview of Ladies Football in Sligo The game is going from strength to strength not just nationally but also locally with over 1800 current playing members and 20 clubs across all levels of playing Ladies Gaelic football at the current time. The underage scene has been on an uphill spirral at county scene with the U-14 Girls team making the All Ireland Final where they faced Leitrim in the C final but unfortunately the Leitrim Girls got the better of them on the 1st July. The U16’s got to the All-Ireland C Quarter final but were unlucky to lose out ot a strong Longford team. Sligo Ladies football was on the National platform in March when they hosted the National congress which was held in Diamond Coast Hotel in Enniscrone. Delegates from across Ireland and abroad attended the event which proved to be massive success from Sligo ladies point of view . It will be hoped that the congress will be back in Sligo in very near future. Club Championship The Club championship scene is extremely strong with two rounds already underway . The Senior Championship has four teams in it with current champions

Sligo u14 team. Geevagh hoping to retain the title after winning it for the last three times but rivals St.Nathy’s will hope that they cause an upset this year. St.Michael’s were the surprise package last year as they made the final and will be hoping to make it back to that place again this year and hope that they could go one better . Eastern Harps are also back up to Senior as they won the Intermediate title last year and will be looking to have a good run. The intermediate Championship has six teams in it hoping to make it into the final with the hope of playing Senior championship next year which is a massive incentive. St.Mary’s who were in the Intermediate Final last year will be hoping that they can go one better this year but they have tough competition with CT Gaels being very competitive in recent years at intermediate level. They will be hoping to go well in this years championship. Drumcliffe Rosses Point who competed in the All Ireland Junior Final in 2009 when they faced Clonakilty of Cork and later went on to play in the Senior Championship will be hoping that they too can go back up into the senior
championship. Owenmore Gaels the Junior Champions in 2014 will be hoping they can give it a good push at the intermediate championship. Eoghan Rua will be confident that they can get close to the title with plenty of experience in their team and finally Calry/St.Joseph’s who won last year’s junior title will be hoping to give a good account of themselves in this year intermediate championship. The Junior Championship will also be very competitive with four teams hoping to make into the final of the competition. St.Patrick’s in their second season as an adult club will be hoping to go better than last year’s as they got to the final but Calry/St.Joseph’s got the better of them on that occasion. Curry had gone back to Junior after many years at Intermediate level and will be hoping to go back to Intermediate in 2017. For St.Molaise Gaels it’s the first year that they have had an adult team and finally Shamrock Gaels will have high hopes of making the final after plenty of success in previous years at underage . The future looks very bright for Sligo Ladies Football at all levels.

ABOUT SLIGO LADIES FOOTBALL
A
t the GAA Convention in Sligo in December 1992 a motion was passed to look into the idea of setting up a ladies structure in the county. County Board development officer at that time, Tommy Carroll, called a meeting of all interested clubs and from those beginnings a Ladies County Board was established. The officers who had the honour of being the first Sligo Ladies County Board were:Chairperson – Marty Duffy Vice Chairperson – Deirdre Quinn Secretary – Denise Feehily Assistant Secretary – Shauna McPartland Fixtures Secretary – Tommy Carroll Treasurer – Austin Mc Tiernan
Registrar – Christina Johnston PRO – Brendan Canning Development Officer – Tommy Carroll. In June 1993 the league structure was set in motion with competitions in U-14 and Senior level. In all 14 clubs fielded teams with over 400 girls taking part in more than 50 games. The commitment and energy shown over the summer months culminated in teams from St, Nathy’s and Castleconnor playing for the Bank of Ireland Cup in U-14 final and NCF/Sligo Dairies Cup in the Senior section was between Eastern Harps and Shamrock Gaels. The honours on final day on the 18th September ’93 in a windswept and wet Marcievecz
Park Sligo went to St. Nathy’s and Eastern Harps. Of course ladies football was played in Sligo a number of years before. Many of the Senior panel of 1993 would have played their first gaelic football match within their respective Community games area in the middle to late 1980’s. The seeds were set all those years ago for the present day standards. Ladies Gaelic Football is still recognised as one of the fastest growing female sports in Europe. With over 1000 clubs in Ireland and membership growing by the day, Ladies Gaelic is reaching women and girls from all over the country. Not stopping there however, the Ladies Gaelic Football Association has many overseas clubs, one of the latest additions coming from Cape Town in South Africa. The Ladies Gaelic Football Association provides a social outlet and a healthy activity for thousands of people around the world. Starting with club football for primary schools girls, an individual can keep playing Ladies Gaelic for as long as she wants, especially now with our Gaelic4Mothers&Others initiative for those adults interested in recreational or non-competitive participation. ATHLONE REGATTA Sligo Rowing Club made their annual June pilgrimage to the inner lakes of Lough Ree, Coosan, Athlone on the 18th where 32 clubs from around the nation converged on the 6 lane 1800 metre course. With Blessington Regatta cancelled weeks previously owing to low water levels all clubs were taking advantage of the Athlone Regatta to clock up some quality race time prior to the National Championship in July. 435 boats raced in total on the day with racing being ran on a tight schedule from 8am to 8pm that evening. Fortunately there was a break in the weather on Saturday
affording perfect rowing conditions and sunshine for the day’s racing. Sligo were represented by 10 boats in total on the day with exceptional performances taking place on the water. Saturday 16th July proved to be a busy day for Sligo AC athletes with some excellent performances both nationally and internationally. In the Schools International Meet held in Kent, England, Lauren Cadden ran superbly to climb the podium twice. In the 300M, Lauren finished 3rd in 40:77 in a race won by Amber Anning of England in 38.84. In the 4X300M Relay, Lauren, along with her teammates Alexandra O’Neill, Davicia Patterson and Miriam Daly, finished 3rd in 2:44:50 in a race won by England in 2:41:71. Overall, in the Girls scoring, England were on top with 266.5 points followed by Ireland on 180.5, Wales on 127 points and Scotland on 109 points. In Belgium, Emmet Dunleavy finished 4th with a tremendous season’s best of 14:30.13 in the 5000M. Closer to home, Richard Gorman added to his considerable reputation as one of the region’s foremost runners with a super victory in the Mullingar 10 Miler. Gorman and Barry Shiel were head to head for the opening 8 miles, much of which was into a strong headwind. However Richard pulled in front of the Longford AC man to open an unassailable lead and crossed the line in 54:33. In the Roscommon 10 Miler, the Female category was quite competitive with 7 athletes in close proximity for most of the race. Lucy Brennan managed to finish 3rd female overall in 1:04:53. Deirdre Deering ran 1:19:32 with Cathy McCarthy finishing in 1:19:56, Mary Furey in 1:22:06 and Aisling Kennedy in 1:22:46. Danny Hannon, in 1:04:44, was 1st M50 while Paul Deering was 4th M50 in 1:10:43.

Sligo GAA partnership with the Samaritans
Sligo GAA’s Health & Wellbeing Committee heard from their mental health partner Sligo Samaritans representatives Seamus Cummins and Joe Waters at their July meeting to recap on the emotional support Samaritans offer to GAA members. The partnership aims to encourage people who are going through a difficult time to seek help, while also tackling the stigma associated with mental health problems. In doing so, both organisations hope that people will access the round the clock support provided by Samaritans. Samaritans are available 24/7 free phone at 116123 to help and support people who are finding things tough, people contact them to help themselves find a way forward. The Samaritans are not about providing advice, they LISTEN and don’t judge. Seamus highlighted that there’s no “typical” Samaritans caller, people contact the helpline about everything from depression, relationship and family issues to loneliness, physical and mental health issues, abuse, financial worries and much more. Samaritans will also help respond to the growing desire of clubs to provide talks on emotional wellness at grassroots level. Then to top it off, she was super happy coach when she heard the news that the Benbulben dressage team of Amy, Alayne, Emma and Miriam won the AIRC team qualifier in Ennis , with the Benbulben amber team placing 5th! well done ladies. They are now looking forward to heading to the AIRC National Dressage Championships in Mullingar in August!

What can be treated? Because we work at an energy level it doesn’t matter what your problem is. Our job is to deal with what causes your problem, so people come to our clinics with every conceivable problem be it physical, emotional or mental. Children also benefit hugely from the treatment. How does the therapy work? Your body is made up of energy and if this energy system becomes imbalanced then your body becomes. We balance that energy system with specially developed techniques which in turn allow the body to heal. What is the role of the Plexus therapist? The first step in the bodies healing process is to get your energy system balanced and flowing again. The Therapist will also create a health-care programme for you depending on what your problem is. This involves looking at your diet, teaching you how to deal with your stress on a daily basis, look at your muscular and skeletal system and most importantly get your mind focused on your journey back to health.
