DOUBLE FOR BALLYMOTE CELTIC T
he Curtain came down on the 2015/2016 season with the Final of the Robert Cawley Memorial Cup at the Ray Mac Sharry Complex. The grounds in amazing condition insured first class facilities all that was needed was a great game to round of the season. Well the large crowd that came to sport both sides were treated to a classic with the Premier Champions Ballymote Celtic taking on Runners Up St John’s FC. Ballymote Celtic started the game at a high tempo and were rewarded on six minutes when Ciaran Mc Murray fired them into the lead. The hitman Mark Irwin made it two nil on twenty minutes and things were looking gloom for St John’s. The second half was minutes old when Conor Brennan gave St John’s a life line with a well taken goal and it was game. St John’s were now in the driving seat and on fifty-three minutes Malachy Spratt levelled matters with a sublime effort. This was breath raking stuff with both sides playing some brilliant football in the heat of the afternoon sun. Conor Brennan was on a mission with a header that nestled in the Ballymote Celtic goal that gave St John’s the lead for the first time in the game. Other teams have thrown in the towel but Championships are won with digging deep when the going gets tough. Daniel Hargadon proved a saviour for Ballymote Celtic with a brilliant equaliser and brought the game into extra time. Both sides could not be separated even after a hundred and twenty minutes of effort and goals and so to the dreaded penalty shootout. The glory eventually fell to Ballymote Celtic who in winning the Robert Cawley Memorial Cup completed a remarkable League and Cup double what an achievement for a club that has waited since 1978 to lift a league title now complete the magical double.

Child Protection Safeguarding 2 Children’s Officer Course – Monday 20th June 2016… Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership will be hosting a ‘Safeguarding 2 Children’s Officers Course’ on Monday 20th June next. This 3 hour course has been devised by and is certified by Sport Ireland (previously the Irish Sports Council). Recommendations from Sport Ireland are that every club involved with children and young people should appoint a Children’s Officer. This person should be child centred in focus and should have as their primary aim the establishment of a child centred ethos within the club. They are the link between the children and the adults in the club and also take responsibility for monitoring and reporting to the Club Management Committee on how club policy etc, impacts on children and their Sports Leaders. Those wishing to do this course must have first completed Safeguarding 1 Basic Awareness training. Limited places are available on the course and prebooking is essential as it is on a first come first served basis. Each individual must fill out an application form and return it, with fee, to the address below by Friday 10th June. For more information contact Sligo Sport and Recreation Partnership at 071–91 61511 or info@sligosportandrecreation.ie NOTE: PARTICIPANTS MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE TO COMPLETE THIS COURSE

Richard Pugh
Horses are his life, his passion, his hobby, his industry By Mark Foley
F
Unusual commentary position on yellow truck!
rom the moment he was born, horses were in his life, born into a house that was 100 metres from Sligo racecourse, his parents Derek and Bernadette rode out daily, their son followed in suit. One of his earliest memories as a child was his eagerness to get down to a meet at Sligo Racecourse. Having seen a number of horse trucks go past the house on race day, he wanted to be there right then, 3 hours before the first race started in case he missed anything. As he says himself “I must have had my mother pestered”
For Sligo’s Richard Pugh Horses are his life, his passion, his hobby, his industry. Having fallen for the sport of horse racing and everything associated with it at a young age, one would think that his childhood dream would be to become a top jockey notching up important victories, while there was a period as a jockey and some great victories, that actually was never the childhood dream “I just wanted to be associated with horses, it wasn’t anything in particular, I loved everything about the whole environment, I wanted to be part of the circus” explains Pugh.
Interviewing Grand National winning trainer Jimmy Mangan
The last winner for Enda Bolger at Sligo PTP in May 1996. He began working for the Rosses Point based trainer Billy Boyers age 13, Horses would have been ridden out and stables mucked out before Richard Pugh made his way to Summerhill collage and then sometimes again straight after school before the light would fade. It installed an amazing work ethic in young Pugh that is still there today.
After few years under the direction of Boyers, it was decided that Pugh should race as a jockey on the Point to Point scene. January 1993 was his first race, and at the time Pugh was on the Summerhill Soccer, Gaelic and Rugby teams, had also competed in a few cycling races and triathlons. – “the buzz as we approached that first fence
was incredible” is how Pugh explains his first race as a jockey on the Point to Point scene. It was his 9th ride that he had his first victory, over the next few years Pugh established himself on the scene, got some decent horses to race, and notched up a number of victories, but Pugh knew he didn’t have the body to be a jockey for ever and at
only 19 years of age in May 1996 he called it a day, signing off with a double victory at Sligo Race course. But what was he to do next? Finishing a degree in Maynooth and then running a distribution business, how was he going to stay with the circus? “I made a lot of my friends for life as a teenager on the Point to Point scene and then suddenly I had no reason to be on it when I stopped riding, it was a shock to the system – I began doing race reports, some writing and recording of horses and results from the Point to Point scene and picking up the odd commentary, it kept me in the circus!” a year after he had “retired” as a jockey, Pugh was back at Sligo Point to Point doing his first commentary. Now a regular commentator at the top tracks around the country and a regular contributor to RTE’s Horse Racing coverage, the plan to keep in with circus hadn’t turned out so bad – but it didn’t stop there. The Point to Point scene is the breeding ground for top horses on the main racing tracks and racing scene in both Ireland and the UK and sometimes further afield. But there wasn’t much specific knowledge on all the horses that have been on the Irish Point to Point scene. Richard Pugh’s reports, recording of stats and knowledge were suddenly about to fill up what was a “black hole” A friend of Pugh’s had setup a website for the Irish point to point scene P2P.ie but didn’t really know where to go with it, he Partnered up with the Sligo horse man and slowly but surely the site became a source of knowledge and interest to prospective people looking to find that “Dream Horse” as well as to the Point to Point community, it started to grow, Pugh bought his partner out, sold his distribution business and made P2P.ie his main business – in the short period of 7-10 years Pugh and his website have revolutionised the Irish Point to Point scene, P2P.ie is the go to only place for Irish Point to Pointing. When P2P.ie started there was 455 winners on the track graduating from Point to Point, that has now grown to over 1100 – there is being part of the circus and then there is being the Ringmaster! Not to
mention of course it was within the Point to Point community that Pugh met his wife Jennifer, also born into a house near Banbridge where horses and racing are part of daily life! She is also a multiple winner on the scene! Pugh’s stock and reputation is high within the industry and when it is Tattersalls come knocking, that was 4 years ago when he became a nonexecutive director, giving advice and counsel to the biggest firm involved in Horse sales for the UK and Ireland. Last year Tattersalls made him the Director of Horses in Training Sales. “It was a relationship that had developed from the early days with P2P.ie, one of our main advertisers was a sales firm Brightwell, Tattersalls bought them over and our relationship continued, its busy!” explains Pugh Earlier this year the Sligo Races Committee invited Pugh from his base in Kildare to be their special guest for the launch of their Race Season. The event MC’d by Austin O’Callaghan had a Q & A at the end of it and one of the questions asked to Pugh was – What is the importance of tracks like Sligo Racecourse to the Horse Racing scene? Pugh’s answer – “it’s extremely important, if I have made any contribution to the scene then it’s a direct result of the inspiration Sligo Racecourse had on me as a child” A Contribution???? – Lets recap 3 years as a jockey with numerous victories, signing off in Sligo at Age 19 Fills the black hole of data that existed in Point to Pointing and revolutionises the scene totally, bringing new interest and buyers to the Irish market. Heads up the Sales of the leading Sales firm in the UK and Ireland. This Sligo native turns 40 in October, it’s what he is going to do in the next 20 years that is of much interest. The last word we will leave with Richard Pugh – “If I’ve made a good contribution and people see that, then that’s good, I had no major dreams, yes I could have maybe raced more and got more winners, but I just wanted to be involved, I love horses, I love the scene, I’m grateful to be part of it.”

INNISFREE WHEELERS BIKE FOR LIFE 2016
T
SLIGO SPORT JUNE, 2016
uesday 8th March 2016 was the registration night for the latest of our Club’s very popular Bike-for-Life (BFL) beginner/re-starter cycling courses, and it was very encouraging to see well in excess of 30 interested applicants turning up. However, from our experience of delivering BFL courses over the past two years, for most effective course delivery, and for on-the-bike individual coaching and guidance by two BFL group leaders, we had to keep the maximum number of participants to the first 15 to register, as advertised. This was important also from a safety perspective, where a spread of 15 riders on open roads, guided by two qualified CI coaches, is really an advisable maximum. On registration, all of our BFL participants received a welcome pack containing a useful Cycling Safety Kit from the Road Safety Authority (RSA), an important Cycle Safety leaflet from The Sligo Cycling Campaign and a Cycling Ireland (CI) Bike-for-Life
Log Book/Cycling Guide and Neck Buff. On of evening of registration, participants were requested to carefully read the Cycle Safety Leaflet in advance of their first coaching session, and to take note of the excellent illustrative drawings which give clear information of the recommended bike position on the road in various situations (right turns, roundabouts, etc.). A number of participants indicated that they had some previous cycling experience, but most had no regular cycling activity in recent years or experience of any real distance cycling. Some openly admitted their nervousness of open road cycling and their wish to conquer that fear. We acknowledged everybody’s goals and concerns, and committed to addressing all over the next 7 weeks. To the disbelief of many, each participant was informed that the coaches’ aim for the group over the following weeks was to have everybody sufficiently trained and bike-fit, confident on
the road, and ready to be able to successfully complete and enjoy the forthcoming 60Km An Post Yeats Tour of Sligo event on Sunday 1st May. We vividly described the great buzz that we both got on completing our first 60km event, and encouraged all to realistically consider giving it a go ! Our structured coaching program is directly based on Cycling Ireland’s BFL format, with progressive modules of 2.5-3 hours per session delivered within a 7 week timeframe. For this latest BFL course, we wanted to deliver something different, hence the overall goal of participation in the 60Km An Post Tour. All of our participants, 3 men and 12 women, ranging in age from 24 to 65, had, in some instances, not cycled in over 20 years, and all were interested in learning simple and precise bike handling skills, training techniques and generally developing their cycling confidence. Sunday 13th March was a lovely dry day for cycling. All of our 15 eager
participants turned up at the Sligo IT Knocknarea Arena for their introduction to the joys of leisure cycling, with their two bike-mad coaches already there and rearing to go. The Sligo IT Campus being also the regular ‘HQ’ for our well attended Sunday Club spins, our BFL Group’s introduction to the sight of a large number of Innisfree Wheelers cyclists, young and notso-young, and clad in all forms of tight and dodgy looking lycra attire, was very amusing – what a lovely sight to behold ! As always in our first BFL module, before taking to the road at all, our session covered bike assessment (the essential safety ‘M-Check’) with participants swapping and checking each other’s bikes, cycling assessment, cycling competency, talks and demonstrations on basic bike maintenance, how to quickly remove wheels, recommended cycling clothing, proper and secure helmet fitting, the Rules of the Road, road manners and bike etiquette……the ‘dos and don’ts’ of all of that. We then moved the Group to a secure car park at the Sligo IT for cycling skills demonstration and 2 X 2 cycling practice that included safe double-braking, gear changing and techniques (‘bigring’, ‘small-ring’), essential hand signals for safety at all times, 2abreast riding, balancing while drinking and replacing a bottle on the move, the absolute necessity for loud safety calls (‘hole’, ‘single-file’, ‘car up’ etc.), followed by an initial open road spin of 4Km, where every skill and technique just learned was practiced. On the conclusion of our first session, the group was given “cycling homework” for the following week – to commit to togging out, hail rain or shine, and completing 2 X 5km spins in their own time. We suggested Tuesday and Thursday evenings so that when participants
OF F E R • Ride on & Self-propelled & Push Lawnmowers • Petrol Chainsaws for Property Maintenance • Chainsaws for Agriculture and Horticulture
returned for our second BFL session, they could complete a 20km open road spin with ease. As the weeks progressed, the homework was for longer, but very achievable spins, adding some hill work for further development. This progressive training was continued by the coaches, week on week, through the rest of the BFL sessions, and the route segments we used were always segments of the An post 60km circuit. We are very proud of the accomplishments of our 15 BFL participants. Not having been regular cyclists at all just seven weeks earlier, an amazing 11 of our group completed the 60Km An Post Tour of Sligo, and many have since become full Club members and will take their cycling to further heights! We welcome our groups’ feedback, and use it to improve our BFL course delivery. Each participant was issued with a feedback form to complete and we have included some feedback below. “I found it all fantastic – great for confidence building”. “Teachers were very good – informative, made everything easy to understand” “Very well presented and enjoyable” “The lads were excellent at explaining the use of gears and other parts of the bicycle, puncture repair etc” “The course was very well delivered. The members have improved their confidence, techniques and fitness. Thank you Paul and Martin for this amazing course” “Excellent and really worth doing. Would recommend to all starting out” Finally, we would like, in particular, to thank Lawrence from Cycling Ireland, our own Innisfree Wheelers Cycling Club Sligo, and the Road Safety Authority, Ballina, for all of the support we have received in preparing for, and hosting our Bike-for-Life courses to date. Martin Keville & Paul Duffy

Colaiste Iascaigh win Sligo/Leitrim 1st/2nd Yr Competition Congratulations to Colaiste Iascaigh boy’s football team on winning the Sligo/Leitrim 1st and 2nd year competition. The boys won a hard fought battle against Ballinamore Community School in Sligo G.A.A. centre of excellence, Scarden last Monday by a scoreline of 5-6 to 2-11. A fantastic individual goal by Eoin Gordan in the dying minutes proved the difference between the teams in a tightly contested match. Colaiste Iascaigh started well with a goal and two points in the early minutes but a resilient Ballinamore fought back with some excellent long distance points and at the interval Colaiste Iascaigh led by just 3 points. Colaiste Iascaigh got a dream start to the second half with an early goal but again Ballinamore fought their way back into game and would have taken the lead with ten minutes remaining only for an outstanding block by Shane Molloy to a shot that was heading for the back of the net. Colaiste Iascaigh grabbed the decisive goal two minutes from the end to cap off a great win and end the year on a high note.

Research shows that men in Ireland experience a disproportionate burden of ill-health and die too young. * Men in Ireland have a higher death rate than women for all of the leading causes of death. * Poor lifestyles are responsible for a high proportion of chronic diseases. * Late presentation to health services leads to a large number of problems being more difficult to treat Dr. Cate Hartigan, Head of Health Promotion and Improvement, Health and Wellbeing Division commented: ‘Much can be and indeed is being done to improve this situation. Any action that encourages men and boys to lead a healthier lifestyle, to be aware of their health and to seek early detection and treatment for health issues is very welcome.’ ‘Men’s Health Week provides an opportunity to heighten awareness of preventable health problems for men of all ages. Everyone can support and celebrate Men’s Health Week 2016.’ For practical ideas on how to get involved, download the following information on ways to mark MHW 2016 <http://www.mhfi.org/mhw2016celebrateit.pdf>. A free, 32 page Manual (based upon the ‘Haynes Manual’ model) is being distributed to mark Men’s Health Week 2016. The manual provides ten simple and practical health challenges to men and to meet every challenge, it offers three choices. The publication of the booklet has been supported by Health Promotion and Improvement, Health and Wellbeing Division, HSE, the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland, the Irish Pharmacy Union, and author Dr Ian Banks.47,000 copies of this manual have already been distributed throughout the island of Ireland, and they are available in most local pharmacies throughout the country. You can also download or share a PDF version of the manual here http://www.mhfi.org/challenges2016.pdf There is a Men’s Health Event at Sligo Park Hotel Tuesday June 14 2016 - Open Public Event all welcome - marking International Men’s Health Week in Sligo.

ROWING ROUND UP FOR MAY Queens Hat Trick and Lough Rynn Win
Mens Novice Coxed Quad receive their medals at Queens Regatta , Castlewellan, Co. Down. L to R : Eoin Donohoe, Mark Coen, Cora Hackett(Cox), Brian Colsh, Niall Colsh.
S
ligo Rowing Club are now bearing the fruit of their winter labour’s achieving significant wins at both Queens and Lough Rynn Regatta’s which were recently attended in May. The early 5AM start with boats in tow to Castlewellan County Down paid dividends at Queens Regatta which was held on the 7th May with three wins in the men’s categories of Senior Double, Club Double and coxed Novice Quad whilst the women’s junior 18 double and quad put in very good performances which they can be proud of as well as the newly formed girls junior 14 coxed quad showing great improvement and certainly a crew to look out for in the future. The Double of Huw James & Glen Patterson gave a master class in rowing on the day beating the power houses of Portora and Garda in the men’s senior double category whilst returning to the water to go on to also win the men’s Club Double Category beating Garda, Queens, Blackrock, Commercial and RBAI. The men’s novice coxed quad of Niall and Brian Colsh, Eoin Donohoe, Mark Coen and expertly coxed by Cora Hackett not to be out done maintained the clubs winning form by going on to win their category beating both Portadown A and B crews. The second regatta of the month to be attended was the inaugural Lough Rynn Regatta which has held
on the newly developed state of the art 7 lane Olympic grade course in Mohill which was developed by Leitrim County Council. Again the club maintained winning form on what could only be described as perfect rowing conditions on a perfect course with Huw James and Glen Patterson again bringing home the silverware in the men’s club double category beating Commercial, Saint Michaels of Limerick , Portadown, Garda and Offaly. Other notable performances on the day were that of Eleanor Burke in the womens Club coxed quad and Conor Whelehan in the mens novice coxless quad both for whom raced their racing debut on a 2000 metre course whilst Charlotte Kinsella again showed great courage in the womens quad. The club continues to train during week days as well as the weekends availing of the bright mornings and long evenings as the racing sprint regatta season quickly approaches the grand finale of the Irish National Rowing Champs which is a 3 day event over 2000 metres to commence on July 15th at Inniscarra , Farron Wood, county Cork. Prior to the champs the club will travel to the inner lakes of Lough Ree to race on the 6 lane 1800 metre course of Athlone Regatta to be held on the 18thof June. Towards the end of July the club will travel to Carrick on Shannon for the annual 500 metre
sprint regatta. Off the water the club will take receipt of two new boats in mid-June which were financed by local fundraising and national lottery funding. The boats arriving from Europe are a 75Kg category coxless quad and an 80kg single scull which are to be called DOONEY ROCK and SLISH WOOD respectively. These boats will join the older boats in the club fleet including the GARAVOGUE and the HAZELWOOD. The club would like to thank all who contributes to their fund raising efforts. It is sincerely appreciated.

One day can change your life I
n a world where it seems everything has a day dedicated to it ( from International Kiss a Ginger Day to World Picnic Day) it’s surprising that Global Wellness Day, a day dedicated to encouraging people to live their best and healthiest life, was only founded in 2012. Starting in Turkey, the initiative has taken off worldwide, and is now represented by passionate ambassadors from more than 73 countries planet-wide. We talked to Kira Walton, Sligo’s (and the Republic of Ireland’s) very own Global Wellness Day Ambassador and founder of Voya, to find out exactly what Saturdday 11th June holds in store. What Is Wellness? As Kira says, “Wellness is a lot of things. It’s a state of mind, a way of life, a feeling, as well as incorporating exercise, diet and mental health”. The world health organisation defines wellness as “A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”, all of which points to the idea that wellness is
about making choices that lead to a healthy and fulfilling life. There are seven steps in the Global Wellness Day Manifesto, which advocates suggest incorporating into one’s lifestyle slowly. Kira points out that “We’re all busy, we’re all working hard, and you can’t expect someone to change their whole way of life overnight... Or even just for one day”. The idea of the manifesto, which includes such simple luxuries as an early night and plenty of hydrating water, and the aim of the day itself, is to inspire and encourage individuals to take such steps in their own everyday existence. A family dinner, organic food and a nice long walk are also steps in the manifesto, as well as the less obvious options of avoiding plastic bottles and doing a good deed. What’s On Offer? Global Wellness Day is an entirely not-for-profit day, run by volunteers like Kira and her team, Jacqueline Mellet and Gretta Salter. Therefore all of the events available on Saturday 11th June at Sligo Enterprise Centre and the beautiful
surrounds of Strandhill village and beach, are absolutely FREE. At 9am the day kicks off with a mindful meditation led by well-known eco-retreat guru Noeleen Tyrrell. Following this, John Graham, Personal Change Coach, will give a talk on how to maximise sleep and switch off one’s mind at night time, to aid with energy levels and productivity. Yoga next, with founder of Yoga Meon, Anne-Marie O’Halloran, in a session that will suit all capabilities. Gently Ramping up the exercise side of things, there will be a guided walk across the stunning Strandhill sand dunes, after which Sligo’s most boisterous and brilliant dance teacher, Sarah Middleton will be hosting a fun and energetic ‘Dance Wellness’ workshop. And if you weren’t pooped after all that, there’s also a rebounding class (trampolining for grown-ups) and a kids activity session too. All sessions are free and open to the public, and can be attended all in a row or sporadically with a little coffee break in between the ones that appeal. Registration is 15 minutes before each event, but booking in
advance is advisable, as demand is bound to be high for such a vibrant day out. Wellness Around The World While Sligo is enjoying all the activities on offer on what will hopefully be a sunny Saturday afternoon in Strandhill, Ireland, thousands around the world will be doing the very same. The founder of Global Wellness Day, Belgin Aksoy, herself a cancer survivor and passionate advocate of living well, is determined that this special day dedicated to good physical and mental health is available to everyone, no matter where they live or what their financial or social situation. As she says; “Living well is the simple necessity for every human being on the planet. To overcome global problems such as depression and lead a healthier and happier life, we need an inspiring beginning. The name of that beginning is Global Wellness Day”. Wellness in Sligo While wellness should be, and can be, a priority for everyone around the world, there is one
thing that Kira acknowledges we are particularly blessed to live in a place like Sligo. “Look at all we have on offer, from our beautiful landscape to all the watersports and facilities close at hand, it really is hard not to want to live well in such a perfect setting!” Indeed, while city dwellers have to seek out a small patch of green to get close to nature on their run or walk, we have an abundance right on our doorstep. Activity providers like the numerous surf schools along the coast, SUP, kayaking, horseriding, golf, tennis and mountainbiking, as well as more unusual feel-good options like flying lessons and dance classes, an abundance of live music, great (and healthy!) food and drink options and plenty of entertainment on offer make Sligo one of the most inspiring places to be healthy on the planet. So what are you waiting for? Take a few leaves out of Kira and co’s book today and try a few steps of the manifesto. By the time Global Wellness Day comes around you could already be feeling very well indeed.

Innisfree Wheelers 30k Event
W
e had another great Time Trial 30km event tonight promoted by Innisfree Wheelers on quite a cold and windy evening in Ballintogher. Once again we had some very close competition among the twelve cyclists who competed. A very strong head wind faced the riders on the return 15k and despite this some very respectable times were recorded. Ronan Currid was once again the convincing winner tonight with a great time of 48.57. Ross Guilfoyle was runner-up in 49.48 with Paul Flynn next home in 50.02.. Once again thanks to all our brave competitors and of course to our marshals John Delorey, Niall Maxwell, Seamus McGowan and our ever reliable time-keeper Martin O’Hara. Thanks also to Hugh Moran and Mrs Moran for providing excellent tea and sandwiches after the event. This was once again supplemented by Pam Benson’s legendary chocolate biscuit cake which went down a treat!
At the start of the cycle to Ballina in aid of St.Vincent de Paul. The weather was very kind to the cyclist and we all enjoyed the afternoon. Thanks to the Bank of Ireland for the refreshments.

WELL DONE TO THE SLIGO TENNIS REPRESENTATIVES IN CLAREMORRIS TENNIS CLUB AT THE JUNIOR OPEN - YOU DID US PROUD!
The misunderstanding that drives someone to cheat
O
ne of my earliest & strongest memories of sport was when I was 12 & playing in one of my first junior medals. I already had a handicap which I think at the time was around 22, I was enthusiastic, I could hit good shots but consistent scoring wasn’t that great. Anyway on this medal after my first 2 balls had been lost in the trees, I’d hacked myself up onto the green and taken a couple of putts for an 11. My pal who was marking my score sidled up & whispered “Don’t worry I’ll put you down for a 7” and gave me a little wink. I suppose why I remember this is my overwhelming thought of ‘But you can’t just do that!’ then my second thought of ‘Who else is doing this if he’s doing it?’ (even if it was seem as a kind gesture to a chum.) It culminated in a thought of ‘What’s the point in competing if none of this is being played to the rules, might as well not bother counting’. It’s a really vivid memory and there’s a lot of emotion attached to it (non if it that pleasant). Cheating in sport is never out of the news these days. Whether it’s using banned drugs, adding a motor to your mountain bike or reality show stars siblings cutting under the barriers at the London Marathon to run 20k in 48mins! Obviously it’s a tiny percentage who do it, but bad news sells. So why bother competing if you want to compete fairly? I’ve read articles that talk about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation would be someone who is motivated by stuff ‘outside’ of them i.e. money, prizes, acclaim from others, status, praise etc. Intrinsic motivation comes from ‘inside you’ authentic desire to be the best you can, to play for love, enjoyment etc. I’ve read how extrinsically motivated people would be more likely to cheat. Intrinsically motivated people less so because they are playing to be their best and cheating would go against that. Personally speaking it’s not the label of what your motivation is that’s the problem. I do think when we label ourselves we are almost giving ourselves permission to behave in a certain way “it’s the way I am”. Extrinsic motivation is learned, it’s not who you are, it’s what your understanding & behaviours have been up till now. It’s the values & beliefs (thoughts) that have been lived by to give those results. Intrinsic motivation

isn’t learned it’s exactly what it says on the tin. intrinsic & has always been there, its built in. What I do think is there’s a misunderstanding from those who cheat of how our experience of life works. Our whole experience of sport is mind made. The rules are man made and adapted. Drugs that were legal a few months ago are no longer legal, putters that met standards no longer conform, offside rules that seem to change annually (and still mystify). Someone first thinks up what’s acceptable then puts the thought into practice. So it’s our thoughts that make up the parameters of what is right and wrong. What’s also mind made is our experience. Whether we win, lose, draw, play great or play terrible. The experience we have of that is mind made. Our thoughts create our experience at that time. Someone could win & be nonplussed Tom Cruise another could be over the moon. It’s their thinking in the moment that creates their own personal experience never the situation. So for someone who feels that their happiness or satisfaction comes from the experience of winning, prizes, acclaim from others etc. You can see why corners are cut. To add to that the more we think something is OK the more we will find evidence to justify it. To cheat is an action, no more no less. An action that when the person does it, they have decided it’s the right course of action to follow. It’s obviously an action that makes a mockery of playing the game. It doesn’t mean it IS the right course of action just the one that, through their thinking, was right at the time. Once carried out their version of it is a memory, or a thought. Our thinking is our imagination and our imagination can create any version of the past it likes. My memory of being twelve on the golf course is that I signed for a 11, that’s the memory I’d like to have and it’s the one I’ve continually thought. As sad, frustrated, let down & angry, hearing about cheats makes us. As long as there’s a misunderstanding of where their experience comes from they will always be looking for shortcuts breaking the rules. The only saving grace is that if they feel their feeling comes from outside them then they will always be looking and never be fully peace. CONNACHT SCHOOLS TRACK & FIELD S
ligo AC athletes had a very successful day in the Connacht Schools Track and Field Finals held in dry but windy conditions in Athlone IT. The Minors raced well. Meadhbh Mooney was 3rd in a tight 100M race in a time of 13:54 although she just missed out on an All-
Ireland place by a mere .05 of a second. Michael Morgan was 4th in the 800M in 2:30. There were further successes in the Inter section. Leo Doherty ran 2.08 and claimed Silver in the 800M. Leo led for most of the race but was just caught on the final windy bend. Well done Daragh Williams
who ran well to finish 5th in a PB of 2:16. Ailbhe Morgan was 2nd in the Inter 3K with a time of 11:39 while Eimear Joyce finished 5th in the 800M. Daire Williams finished 6th in his 800M Final. Lauren Cadden won her 200M Final in 26:06 while Ella McGeough was 4th in 27:5. Lauren continued her winning ways with a time of 42:38 in the 300M. Aoife Morris won Gold in the Mile with a time of 5:40. In the Seniors Graham Kerr continued Grammar’s recent dominance of the 100M when he emerged victorious in an exciting 100M in 11:13. The walkers really excelled and their superior technique was really apparent. In the Junior 1200 Walk Mercy College student Ruth Monaghan, with 2 more years in this category, was second in 6:52. Ryan Delahunt was first home in the 2000M Inter Walk in 11:18 with his sister Orlaith matching his gold with her own in the 3000M as she walked 16:05. Well done to the various teachers and schools. In particular, well done to the Sligo AC coaches especially Ray Flynn, Karl Boyce, Alan Kearins and Dermot McDermott. Their protégées are testament to their ongoing dedication and top class coaching. - David Kearins

CONNACHT’S REFUSAL TO LIE DOWN Taken from Patrick McCarry’s The New Breed Irish Rugby’s Professional Era
‘This time last year I was chasing my tail,’ laments Pat Lam as he sits in a spacious gym at The Sportsground with Mils Muliaina five metres away. ‘It was only me and Dan McFarland, which is ridiculous at this level.’ It is not the first time I have heard a Connacht coach complain, but hearing griping Galwegian linen aired in the presence of a onehundred-times capped All Blacks legend is a new experience. Times are changing out west, but many still wish the pendulum could pick up the pace. Lam, a New Zealander who appeared in two World Cups with Samoa, arrived in Galway in 2013 with lofty ambitions for the province. He spoke with infectious enthusiasm upon touchdown, but, by the end of October (and a 16–13 loss to Leinster), the enormity of his task was beginning to dawn. Connacht achieved their greatest-ever rugby result two months later, by stunning fourtimes European Cup champions Toulouse at Stade Ernest-Wallon, their imposing home ground. It was the high-water-mark of a season that saw them finish tenth in the league and miss out on the
new Champions Cup by a considerable distance. Undeterred from his long-term project, Lam continued to utilise his Super Rugby contacts. Tom McCartney and Bundee Aki were signed up for the new season, along with fullback Muliaina. The captures took the Kiwi playing contingent into double figures and added a genuine air of excitement around the province. ‘I came here purely on the vision and the basis of the cause,’ says Lam. ‘When I talked to these guys I said, “Listen, this isn’t about playing for just another club and we’ll have the craic.” ‘This,’ Lam continues, and he pats a meaty left hand above his heart, ‘is Connacht. This is where they have come from, this is where they are and this is where they aspire to go. This is what we’re going to do, and this is what I’d like you guys to do as part of it. That’s why I came here. If [the board] had said to me, “Oh, become coach of Connacht, win some games and enjoy life in the west of Ireland,” I’d have said, “No thanks.” They said, “This is where we’re at and this is where we’re going ...” Woah, really gets you going.
That’s why you play the game – to have that cause. ‘When I first arrived,’ Lam recalls, ‘I didn’t expect we’d have no chief executive for a long period of time; I didn’t expect it’d just be me and Dan for a long time. I didn’t expect a lot of that. What I did do is spend a lot of time with the people on the board and the key people in the IRFU, because there’s a Plan Ireland document. I read that strategic plan. The biggest thing for me is I love this game and want to see it grow. What I read and understood from that document is that the game will only grow if the Irish team is strong. We’ve got our goals, but it is not about the provinces. We’ve got a part to play in growing the game in Ireland. If we can provide another avenue for young, Irish players to come through and play for the national side – because that funds the game and pays the bills – great. A kid in Castlebar or Clifden is not interested in rugby because Leinster, Munster or Toulon win the European Cup. He gets interested in the game because of the Six Nations or Ireland winning the World Cup.’
Lam won the Heineken Cup as a player with Northampton in 2000, when they beat Munster at Twickenham. Sitting in Galway, fourteen years on, Lam still uses top teams as a reference point when referring to his young squad of players: ‘Other teams can replace that international with that international. Look at Toulon. If you look at our squad last year. I asked a few people, even on the [Connacht] board, to name their best fifteen. They did, and then I threw down facts. I said “Do you know that not once in twentyeight games did that fifteen play together?” It didn’t happen once. That’s not a problem for teams like Leinster. If Jamie Heaslip’s not playing, Jordi Murphy plays. If Sean O’Brien is missing, Shane Jennings plays. We get Willie Faloon injured, and get Jake Heenan, who is playing his first year of rugby at this level, in. He gets injured, and we bring in a young academy boy, a nineteen-year-old. See the difference?’ Before I can nod in agreement, Lam reaches out and grabs my shoul- der. ‘People might see that and say, “That’s terrible,” but I
Some of the Connacht players at last years summer camp out in Sligo rugby club
look at it as a total positive. It’s a chance to give a young guy the exposure. He’s in the academy, but he has played seven [senior] games. People from the outside may look at it and ask,“What’s going on?” but I look at it as this young kid from Ireland has now achieved that, and will get better and better.’ What stands out from my chat with Lam is the fact that there were open lines of communication with the IRFU, and that money was finally funnelling its way out west. In Paul Bunce, Connacht had finally joined the other three Irish provinces in having a dedicated head of fitness. Aki, signed from Waikato Chiefs, and a two-time Super Rugby champion, would have easily slotted into the Leinster and Munster midfields, while if ever there was a marquee signing to lace up and run out onto Thomond Park, it would have been Mils Muliaina – former teammate and surfing buddy of Doug Howlett. Mils, however, was in Galway, and settling into west-coast life. It all seemed miles away from the union’s previous dealings with the western province. Lam is contracted until June 2018, and can see genuine progress. For the first time since Warren Gatland left in 1998, however, Connacht are heading in the right direction.

All Stars U12’s take part in Torraine Sears Memorial the 3rd quarter. However Blue Demons proved too strong in the end with our lads loosing by 6pts. A satisfactory nights work with lots of experience gained and more action to come over the weekend. Game 2 Sligo All Stars 14 Vs 42 Manchester Giants We suffered a heavy defeat from the Manchester team but showed good resilience to keep the fight going until the end.
T
he Under 12s took part in the first Torraine Sears Memorial in Belfast over the weekend. Torraine is a former player of the All Stars that died suddenly last year aged only 44. He moved to Ireland in 1995 and played for Sligo All Stars, St Vincent’s Dublin, St Galls and Star before moving to the Andersonstown Tigers in 2006 were he coached until his passing in 2015. As part to the memorial the club presented Tory Sears, Torraine’s son wore a No15 All Stars jersey which was Torraines number for his spell in Sligo. The tournment brought teams
from Manchester, Cork, Dublin and an Ulster/NI select team. Team Line Up for the weekend: Mateusz Weclawowicz, Eoin Frain, James Muldoon, Mathew Clarke, Connor Flynn, Bridel Bosakani, Killian Barrett, Ryan Cummins, Daniel O’Meara, Dillon Walsh Coaches: Shane O' Meara & Paul Clarke Game 1 Sligo All-Stars 31 v 37 Blue Demons of Cork After a very ropey start to the game we were down 11-03 after the first quarter. The lads fought back very well and pulled the score back to within 4 points in
Game 3 Sligo All Stars 30 vs 32 Basketball NI We faced up against Basketball Northern Ireland select team which was made up of players from across NI. This proved to be a great game of basketball with BNI only winning the game by 2 points. Game 4 Sligo All Stars 38 Vs 36 Dublin Rolestown For the final game on Saturday we faced up against Dublin's Rolestown. Another great game of basketball with the biggest lead only ever being 5 points. Our lads were down by 2 points going into the last quarter but dug deep and took the game by 2 points in the end. We did not progress to the Semi Finals as four of the five teams won one game each and it went down to points difference with the All Star not having enough to go forward. Game 5 - exhibition game against Basketball Northern Ireland 2 Sligo All Stars 32 Vs 21 Basketball NI2 While only for pride this game showed how much ours lads learned over the weekend with some great plays, defence and excellent team work. The team had really gelled together and worked as a unit to take the victory this afternoon.

Nearly 50 Athletes from the club took part on a glorious evening weather wise and also medal wise. Nearly every event had a Corran Medalist and even the boys U12 Final over 60m was an all Corran Final. A busy few weeks ahead with Connaught and National Championships to come. A lot to look forward to!! Well done to all!! Corran AC was well represented at the Connacht schools athletics in Athlone yesterday and along with their coach Dermot Mcdermott had a very successful day. To start with local athletes there was a Connaught schools title for Zara Stafford and brilliant silver and qualification for the Colaiste Mhuire Senior girls relay. Erin Taheny from collooney and student at St Mary’s Ballisodare was again showing her class as she finished second in the 200m and a very tight 3rd in the 75m hurdles against much older opposition. Eoin McLaughlin Summerhill student and newcomer to Corran AC won his inter boys 400m by a street and Craig McLoughlin also Corran AC finished a very tight 3rd in the inter boys 100m hurdles in a very very hotly contested race, he will be back next year not only to mount a challenge in Connaught at this but nationals as his raw talent really came to the fore yesterday. Kelsey OBoyle ran a brilliant race in the junior girls 200m only being nipped for 2nd on the line but defeated all 3 girls that beat her in North Connaught’s so showing rapid signs of progression and a pair of spikes! Well done too to South Sligos Ellen Kilcoyne who claimed double gold in the minor girls 100m and Long jump with a Connaught schools record in the later with a jump of 4m97cm

What can be treated? Because we work at an energy level it doesn’t matter what your problem is. Our job is to deal with what causes your problem, so people come to our clinics with every conceivable problem be it physical, emotional or mental. Children also benefit hugely from the treatment. How does the therapy work? Your body is made up of energy and if this energy system becomes imbalanced then your body becomes. We balance that energy system with specially developed techniques which in turn allow the body to heal. What is the role of the Plexus therapist? The first step in the bodies healing process is to get your energy system balanced and flowing again. The Therapist will also create a health-care programme for you depending on what your problem is. This involves looking at your diet, teaching you how to deal with your stress on a daily basis, look at your muscular and skeletal system and most importantly get your mind focused on your journey back to health.
