Strand Celtic U-16 Girls advanced St. Michaels GAA Club to the 2017 League Final St Michael's Ladies got the senior league off to the best possible start when they overcame a strong St Mary's side in Kent Park on Sunday morning. With 8 players having left the panel from last year it ment that there were a lot of new faces introduced into the team for the league campaign. After conceeding two early goals St Michael's started to play some great football and got right back into it with goals from the returning Caroline Benson, Eilisa Code and Louise Taffe to leave the girls one point behind at half time. The team played some great football in the second half keeping the opposition to three second half points. Darra O Loughlin and Ailish Kelly had
Strand Celtic U-16 Girls advanced to the 2017 League Final with a win over Calry Bohs in Strandhill this evening. In what was a hard fought battle throughout the 80 mins the game ended all square at 1-1. Strand took the lead after a good passage of play midway through the second half when Ciara Rushe flicked a pass through the middle into the the path of Sorcha Reddy and the latter made no mistake with a great strike giving the Calry keeper no chance.Calry levelled the game 10Â minutes later as the result of a corner been cleared only to the feet of a Calry player who shot through a crowded goalmouth and the ball flew into the far corner of the net giving the home keeper no chance . Strand however still held the upper hand for the rest of the game and missed some great chances to put the game out of sight but Calry were not
giving up and could have snatched it at the end but for a great save by the Strand keeper Laura Dinver . Extra time failed to produce another score and so it was to be decided on penalties. The hero of the penalty shoot out turned out to be the Strand keeper Laura Dinver making three superb saves and some fine penalties been taken by the Strand Girls ending this contest 3-2 in favour of the home side. This was a superb all round Team performance with all the Girls putting in a great effort and deserving the win which advances them to the Final which will be played at the Showgrounds on Good Friday. The opposition in the Final will come from the winners of next weeks semi final between Yeats Utd and Manor Rangers. Congratulations to the Girls on a deserved win and best wishes in the Final . Congratulations to everyone at Boyle Celtic and in particular to their fantastic supporters. it was indeed an Historic Day for all in Junior Soccer at the showgrounds
excellent senior league debuts in the wing half back positions, while goalkeeper Shauna Kelly lmade some important saves at crucial times. Sara Feeney who scored the fourth goal and Louise Taffe led the forward line with great heart and effort, while Grainne O Loughlin and Eilise Codd were tireless and dominant throughout the 60 mins. As always the back line worked hard to keep a strong Mary's forward line at bay with Katie McDermott and Kayleigh Haran putting in two really big performances to help ensure a great start to the senior league and give Chairperson Marie Clancy the best possible birthday present.

Worth thinking this one over! FROM A PARENT: One of my friends asked “Why do you pay so much money for your kids to do Basketball ?” Well I have a confession to make, I don’t pay for my kids’ Basketball. Personally, I couldn’t care less about Basketball. So, if I am not paying for basketball, what am I paying for? - I pay for those moments when my kids become so tired they want to quit but don’t. - I pay for those days when my kids come home from school and are “too tired” to go their practice but go anyway. - I pay for my kids to learn to be disciplined. - I pay for my kids to learn to take care of their body. - I pay for my kids to learn to work with others and to be good team mates. - I pay for my kids to learn to deal with disappointment, when they go to games but don’t get that score they’d hoped for, but still have to work hard in the preparation and competition. - I pay for my kids to learn to make and accomplish goals. - I pay for my kids to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight. - I pay for the opportunity my kids have and will have to make life-long friendships. - I pay so that my kids can be in the fresh air instead of in front of a screen... ...I could go on but, to be short, I don’t pay for basketball, I pay for the opportunities that the basketball provide my kids with to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their lives and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen so far I think it is a great investment!

KEVIN EGAN CARS PREMIER LEAGUE 2016/17 SLIGO ASTRO LEAGUES SEASON REVIEW
Cornview Celtic Kevin Egan Cars Premier League Champions
W
hat an incredible & successful 2nd season it has been in the Sligo Astro Leagues at IT Sligo Knocknarea Arena, the season opener ‘The Champions Shield’ pitted last season’s 2 Champions Cornview Celtic ‘league winners’ against Foleys Bar FC ‘Margaret Callaghan Memorial Cup winners’ on the 8th of September 2016. Foleys Bar FC came out on top winning by 2 goals to 1 in a ding dong battle with Murrin & Melly getting the goals after Kearns had put the Geevagh

men ahead. We welcomed 3 new teams to the league with Bald Eagles FC, Arrow Harps & Ballymote Celtic joining the already established Cornview Celtic, Boyle Celtic, Foleys Bar FC, Calry Bohs FC, IT Sligo FC, S.T.S.G Utd, The White Gorilla’s and the Village Inn FC. Last years champions Cornview Celtic and Boyle Celtic under the new management of Padraic O’Dowd were the early pace setters winning their first 7 fixtures closely followed by Foleys Bar FC and Bald Eagles FC with Jonathan Harte at the helm. November was the month where 4 of the top 5 teams all took points off each other while Eamon McDonaghs men opened a gap at the top thanks to Gareth Kelly who had already bagged himself 20 goals including 4 hat tricks. Arrow Harps with Ross Wilkinson in charge closed the gap to the top 4 with Darren Kelly playing out of his skin while Ronan O’Hara and the Calry Bohs lads quietly went about their business moving into 5th spot before the xmas break. The league hosts IT Sligo along with Charlie’s STSG ‘Mean Machine’ found the going tough at the start but credit to both of them never gave up and both got their 1st
Gareth Kelly Cornview Celtic Kevin Egan Cars Premier League 2017 top scorer wins of the season before the turn of the new year. The Kennedy boys and The White Gorillas had an up turn in form going into the break after missing some key players from the start of the season. 2017 carried on much like 2016 with Cornview Celtic extending the lead at the top and while doing so scoring 29 goals in their next 5 fixtures with that man again Kelly scoring yet another hat trick of hat tricks with 10 more goals keeping the 100% perfect season in tact. The young Roscommon men from Boyle Celtic done all they could to close the gap and stay with the leaders themselves going unbeaten throughout the month of January with Deery and Hughes going head to head with Kelly at the top of the goal scoring charts. The 2 teams on the move in February were Farry’s pass masters from Ballymote Celtic and Mickey & Kieran’s Village Inn FC both climbing the table after finding their feet with a hectic schedule of fixtures to catch up on. McDonagh & Kearnsy Cornview men now had 2 things in their sights by the time February came around, a 2nd league title plus the unthinkable 100% perfect unbeaten season. With a tough fixture list ahead includ-
ing 3 of the top 4 teams all within the month could they possibly see the season out unbeaten and claim the ‘Sonny Dineen’ trophy for a 2nd season running? Bald Eagles FC, Foleys Bar FC and the Village Inn FC all came and had a go but without any success leaving Cornview with a record of played 17, won 17, scored 80 with the title up for grabs against the hosts in their next fixture. Boyle Celtics talented young side cemented the runners up spot following a victory against last years cup champions while the Eagles and the Village Inn enjoyed 2 titanic battles both ending in the points been shared in both encounters. With only 3 fixtures remaining and 1 hand already on the title Cornview went into their fixture against the hosts IT Sligo knowing an 18th league win would retain last seasons title but with less than 20 mins remaining in the game the IT had a shock lead thanks to a 1st half Chris McNulty strike. But as champions do they rallied and with top marksman Kelly having an off day up stepped the Lyons brothers Damien and Ja to claim the 3 points and lift the Kevin Egan Cars Premier League title for a 2nd year running with a 3-1 victory.

Myles Kavanagh Calry Bohs FC Hall of fame March saw the Bald Eagles claim 3rd spot in the league while Foleys could now not be caught in 4th place.Calry Bohs, Arrow Harps & the Village Inn all finished in 5th,6th and 7th respectably with only a point between them. The White Gorillas,Ballymote, IT Sligo & S.T.S.G Utd finished 8th,9th,10th and 11th in this year’s league. Congratulations to everyone at Cornview Celtic FC who not only retained their premier league title but did so by going the whole season unbeaten or by dropping any points finishing the season with 3 wins against the Eagles, Foleys & Boyle which left them with an incredible record of P20, W20, D0, L0, F92, A13, GD 79, PTS60 the #PerfectSeason with Gareth Kelly not only picking up the top goal scorer award with 40 goals but also the Player of the season 2016/17. We would like to thank our league sponsors Kevin Egan & Mark Walsh of Kevin Egan Cars Sligo, all the staff at IT Sligo Knocknarea Arena Linda, Ross, John Daniel & Gerry for all their help also all our referee’s and officials who without their dedication and advice the league would not be the success it is. MARGARET CALLAGHAN MEMORIAL CUP 2017
Cornview Celtic
T
his year’s “Margaret Callaghan” memorial cup final took place last Thursday the 30th March at the IT Sligo Knocknarea Arena Astro Turf between Cornview Celtic and Ballymote Celtic with an 8pm kickoff. Having already been crowned the ‘Kevin Egan Cars Premier League Champions’ Eamon McDonaghs Geevagh men went into the final as firm favourites with 2 victories over
Gerry Fahy presenting the Margaret Callaghan Memorial Shield to this years runners up captain Eamon Tighe Ballymote Celtic Astro
Ballymote Celtic their opponents during the league campaign with Kelly bagging 7 goals in those encounters. However Alan Farry’s young Ballymote side had already knocked out some big names on their way to the final including the league runners up ‘Boyle Celtic’ and their close neighbours ‘Arrow Harps’ from Riverstown. The game kicked off under a clear sky and perfect weather conditions for such an occasion
Head of Security Kaiden presenting the Margaret Callaghan Memorial Cup to this years winning captain Darren Kearns of Cornview Celtic
with Ballymote having an early chance going inches wide thanks to an Anderson strike after some good work by Leo McNamara on the wing. It wasn’t long until the Lyons brother gained a foot hold in the middle of the park for McDonagh’s men with Kearny’s urging them forward to try and break the deadlock however Farry’s lads had other ideas and after a long ball forward that was unbelievably taking out of

the sky with sublime skill McNamara looked like he was in one on one only to be denied by a last ditch saving tackle from club captain Kearny’s who had just returned from his honeymoon in Vegas, but just as he thought he saved the day McNamara robbed the ball back and hammered a shot past the keeper before he could move to give the underdogs a surprise lead on the 10 minute mark. This seemed to wake the league champions up and straight from the kick off a fine flowing passing move ended with Kelly controlling the ball on the edge of the box to lay it off to the on rushing Damien Lyons who slotted the ball into the net to level the score at 1-1.Both team’s were now having a proper go at each other with both keepers called into action on numerous occasions during a ding dong first half battle. With the halftime whistle seconds away Cawley found himself in space down the right flank and crossed a hail Mary ball into the box where that man again Kelly somehow got his head around it to direct the ball past the on rushing keeper
to give Cornview the lead for the 1st time in the final and break the battling Ballymote hearts. The 2nd half was much like the 1st with both teams playing attacking football and creating chances at both ends with O’Reily and Tighe both hitting the paint work with long range efforts. Midway through the half Gaffney hit a 50 yard ball to the back post where Kelly volleyed it with a stunning strike that ‘Van Basten’ would be proud of into the roof of the net to make it 3-1 to the Geevagh men. With time running out Ballymote were given a glimmer of hope after Kyle ‘Smiley’ Kane found himself in the sin bin following a bad challenge on Anderson. Try as they might against the 10 men they could not add to the score line and with all 11 players in the box for a last ditch corner including the keeper the ball broke to Kelly who ran to the halfway line and cheekily lobbed the ball over the helpless retreating keeper to claim the match ball with his 3rd of the game and Cornview’s 4th of the final 4-1 FT.

HOW KICKBOXING CAN CHANGE YOUR BODY AND YOUR LIFE
T
o get better balance, power and agility, kickboxing is king among workouts. Experts who have studied the sport say nearly everyone—even older people who might shy away from such things—can benefit from throwing a punch. Unlike most other types of exercise, kickboxing emphasizes powerful movements. Power is different from strength, and for older adults, it’s an even better predictor of mobility and their risk for falls, says Kurt Jackson, an associate professor of neurology and rehab science at the University of Dayton in Ohio. “Pure strength is what a weightlifter uses, but producing power is about both force and speed,” he says. Kickboxing training tends to involve shorts bouts, two to three minutes long, of intense, repetitive movement—like hitting
a punching bag over and over again and kicking and kneeing a pad someone else is holding. “If you look at the research on highintensity interval training [HIIT], you see these short, intense periods of activity can have big benefits,” he says. Some research shows that even very brief stretches— just 60 seconds—of HIIT can offer the same gains in heart and lung health as 45 minutes of lessintense exercise. Kickboxing has been shown to improve fitness, power, flexibility and agility, according to a study of healthy men in their twenties who trained three days a week for five weeks. The men in the study improved their upper and lower body power by about 7%, while shaving off more than a second from their time in a 50meter dash. It also torches a lot of calories. One study from the American Council on Exercise
(ACE) found that the kind of punching-and-kicking combinations used in Tae Bo or “cardio kickboxing” classes burn more than eight calories per minute—about the same amount you’d burn while swimming. The sport can also improve coordination, even in the most extreme cases. Jackson studies the neuromuscular benefits of kickboxing training for people with multiple sclerosis (MS), a condition in which poor communication between the brain and muscles can lead to falls or problems with activities that rely on multitasking, like walking and talking. Kickboxing helps strengthen neuromuscular control in people with the disease in ways that improve balance, mobility and dual-tasking activities, he found. The benefits likely apply to
older adults as well. Kickboxing improves both types of balance that the body requires— anticipatory and reactive—and better balance reduces risk of falls or muscle weakness. “Anticipatory balance is something you use when you can see a need coming, like when you’re stabilizing yourself to reach up into a cupboard,” Jackson says. Reactive balance is the type of mind-muscle coordination you need to catch your balance when you trip, or when life throws some unexpected object your way. Those skills are useful before you hit old age. If your workout routine relies on lifting weights, running or yoga, your neuromuscular system may not be tuned to handle the kind of dynamic motion required for sports—even the ones you do just a few times a year, like skiing or
pickup basketball. “You see these people step or twist wrong and suffer major tears,” Jackson says. “Kickboxing training is a great way to avoid those types of injuries.” However, the swift whole-body movements required in kickboxing could also cause injuries. Back, knee, hip and shoulder strains are all common among kickboxers, found a study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. As with most other forms of vigorous exercise, if you’re a newbie, it’s important to ease into kickboxing gradually. “If you have a bad knee or some other limitation, it’s important to have a coach or physical therapist who knows how to adapt a kickboxing program to your needs, and who will introduce it in a controlled, systematic manner,” Jackson says. SLIGO BAY RNLI RESCUES EIGHT PEOPLE AFTER BOAT CAPSIZES OFF AUGHRIS PIER Sligo Bay RNLI lifeboat was tasked this morning at 11.25am by the Coast Guard following a mayday call at 11.24am to a dive boat off Aughris Pier. The vessel had capsized with all eight people onboard. Volunteer lifeboat crew with Sligo Bay RNLI had just launched on ex-
ercise when they were diverted to the incident and arrived on scene at 11.43am. The lifeboat crew rescued all eight people from the water and one man was airlifted to hospital by the Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118. The remaining seven men were
taken to Aughris Pier where one person was taken by ambulance to hospital. Following the rescue the lifeboat crew returned to the scene to tow the vessel back to the pier. Commenting on the callout Sligo Bay RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Willie Murphy said, ‘In
what has been a difficult week with the loss of Rescue 116 and the ongoing search for her crew, this morning’s callout shows that the professionalism and dedication of the search and rescue community remains unchanged.’ ‘The RNLI crew at Sligo Bay along with their colleagues at Rescue
118 were on scene minutes after the call for help was raised and rescued eight people from the water. Our thoughts are with the man who was airlifted to hospital and with our colleague still searching in Blacksod Bay for the three missing crewmember of Rescue 116.’

CrossFit is the new definition of fitness - CrossFit creates ATHLETES What is Fitness? For years the fitness industry have been unable to define fitness, until now. CrossFit has defined fitness as “an increase in work capacity across broad time and modal domains”. This basically means fitness should not be determined by any one trait but should be determined by how good an individual is at everything, to achieve this level of fitness we must specialize in nothing.

MIXED FORTUNES FOR CONNACHT MOTOR CLUB THE COUNTDOWN MEMBERS IN ACHILL
It was bad luck for the Davids as David Leonard & Niall Burns retired after stage 1 with a blown turbo while David Quinn & James McDermott crashed out on stage 2. Alan & Gary Quinn had a good run in the Manta to finish 26th overall with Colette Rooney not far behind in 30th (2nd in Class 11F). Sean Maloney was progressing well up through the field to hold 30th overall after 3 stages until a problem forced retirement. He rejoined under Rally 2 and finished 5th Junior, taking valuable points for the Border Championship. Well done to all and thanks to members who travelled to help out.

With just 100 days to go until the FAAC Simply Automatic / Sligo Park Hotel Sligo Stages Rally we can report that planning is well underway for what promises to be another exciting, competitor-friendly event on 9th July. Many things have changed with the Sligo Stages Rally over the last number of years. We have seen different sponsors, different organising teams, different stages but one thing that has not changed is this Talbot Sunbeam on ‘00’ duties. Martin Kearns has been an active competitor locally for many years and has also carried out the role of ‘00’ for neighbouring clubs.
CONNACHT MOTORCLUB Cormac Phelan & Katja Auhl have competed on every Sligo Stages Rally together since 2013, taking home crystal on each occasion. There is no doubt the highlights were a Junior win in 2015 in the Citroen C2R2 Max followed by a Class 11F win last year on just their second outing in the Civic. Having upgraded to a 2 litre engine earlier this year, they are now contesting class 13 and if they can carry their current form through to July a class win is a strong possibility.
CIRCUIT OF KERRY The Circuit of Kerry ended in disappointment for Cormac Phelan & Katja Auhl. Having set some very impressive times including a second and third fastest overall, they were holding 5th overall before being forced into retirement on stage 7 with engine failure. There was better luck for the second FAAC Civic as Ciaran & Aine Phelan finished 23rd overall and 3rd in the ever competitive Class 11F.

“IF YOU WANT TO GET FIT CUT DOWN ON THE DRINK” O ne of Ireland’s leading fitness coaches, a Sligo native, is bringing his expertise to Co. Mayo this month, but he has warning for those trying to get fit - stop drinking on a regular basis. The weather is getting better and people are upping the ante in terms of exercise and getting outdoors - but for many their performance will be very disappointing despite all that sweat and hard work. Coach and nutrition expert Alan Williams believes he know why that’s the case for many – it’s drink. Paul says alcohol is something of an “elephant in the room” for Irish people – even those training for that 10k, marathon or triathlon event. “Those ‘few drinks’ are predictably catastrophic for your goals. Alcohol is empty calories and tends to have a high sugar content,” says Sligo-based Alan. And the facts speak for themselves. While a pint of lager has 200 calories, one large glass of wine contains 225 calories. A bottle of wine has 675 and a pint of stout 205 calories. With the recommended daily intake for men being 2,500 calories and for women 2,000 calories those ‘few drinks’ could well make up most of that allowance for many. Alan explains: “If you’re eating and training to drop a few pounds in a
healthy manner you’re probably working off a calorie deficit of 300-400 per day. Over five days you’ve got approx. 1500 calories in the bank. “However if your ‘few drinks’ is five pints that’s coming in at 1000 calories. And with alcohol in the system you’ll crave food. So you’ll probably eat a calorie-laden meal on the way home. And unfortunately this method of eating will continue into the next day too.” Alcohol consumption will lead to dehydration making training more difficult. Your blood sugar levels will be low too which means you won’t have the energy to get as much from your session. “Realistically you probably lose two days of top training,” says Alan. So what’s the solution? How can you stay in training but also enjoy those few pints or glasses of wine after a long week of work? “I’d never ask anybody to give up alcohol completely, I understand that relaxation and enjoyment are important too. However I would suggest the ‘few drinks’ should be closer to once-a-month, rather than every weekend,” says Alan. “The reality is you can’t have it all. By all means have the occasional drink….but if it’s going to be every weekend you’re fighting a losing battle.”
Alan is hosting a ‘Change Your Own World’ seminar at the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar, Mayo on Friday, 21st of April at 8pm. The seminar will cover healthy eating, exercise, mindset and motivation. See: www.alanwilliamscoaching.com Alan Williams is a coach, trainer, motivator and expert in the areas of wellbeing and lifestyle, fitness and confidence building. He uses a decade’s experience and specialist knowledge to get clients fitter, eating better and feeling happier. Alan’s methods have attracted a large audience with clients and social media followers loving his focus on all aspects of health and cleaner living. From Thump Boxing classes and outdoor Operation Transformation sessions for larger groups, Alan is passionate in his belief that wellbeing can be achieved by everyone. Alan’s experience includes eight years working as a fitness coach for the Radisson Hotel Group. The Sligo-native began his own journey to fitness and wellbeing as a teenager growing up in the village of Bunninadden. “I was painfully shy,” he says. “I wanted to do something that would turnaround my confidence and give me energy.” Exercise and learning the other pillars of wellbeing such as health and nutrition, gave him the belief to realise his dreams.

Sligo U13 Rugby
S
ligo U13s got their cup campaign off to a winning start coming out 21-15 victors over a strong Corinthians team in Hamilton Park on Saturday 18th of March. The team had trained diligently since the end of the league with an eye to this Cup opener having succumbed to the same opposition at Hamilton Park 24-10 earlier in the League. On a heavy pitch with a light drizzle the game kicked off with the heavier Corinthians pack benefitting from a knock on to camp for the opening 10 minutes on Sligo's line. The Sligo team were obviously ready for anything that came there way and repelled several attacks beforefinally conceding a try wide out to go down 0-5. Cue the restart and man of the match Jack
Dennison scything through the Corinthian's defence off a planned move set up beautifully by out half Sean Garavan who's distribution was excellent all day. Accurate kicker David Keyes added the extras. Encouraged by this Sligo swept the ball wide from the kick off with Jack Dennison once again the beneficiary in the corner and Sligo went in at half time 14-5 up courtesy of David Keyes adding the conversion. After half time a fumbled Corinthian's restart provided possession to Sligo. A solid front row of Teddy Kilgallen , Cathal Shovlin and Ross Clarke gave livewire scrumhalf Sean Keane good quality ball which he brought down the blindside. The back row of John Mackey, Matthew Ryan and James
Cara Bundoran 5K/10mile/10K.
McDermott recycled quickly and Jack Dennison swept past Coronthian's for the third time to do down under the posts. James McDermott added the conversion to a strong display. With 10 minutes to go Corinthians swept up the blindside evading a number of tackles from a tired Sligo to close the gap to 21-10. Sligo were showing the effects of a heavy pitch after a huge effort against a bigger team and Corinthians came back quickly for another try out wide g to bring the score to 21-5. Sligo showed resilience to bring the game to a successful close spending the last 10 minutes tackling with Ben O' Brien, Hugo Filan , Cathal Morahan and Andrew Barlow showing the way in a wonderful defensive effort.
Roughly 2,300 took part in the 2017 Cara Bundoran 5K/10mile/10K races. Weather conditions were ideal for all the runners that showed the ruggedly scenic Bundoran coastline in all its splendour. The weekend’s proceedings were opened with 500 taking part in a 5K on Friday night. The race was won by Adam Cooke of Omagh Harriers in 16:54. Sligo AC’s Fionnuala Silke was 23rd overall in 22:18 and this earned her a podium finish as 3rd Female. Simon Costello ran well finishing in a time of 22.23 whilst Noirin Kelly was 9th Female in 24:09. Saturday morning saw the 10 Mile and 10K races. The 10 mile race attracted 1200 runners and was won by John Travers in 52:22. The Donore Harriers star, now living in Sligo and working in St Edward’s Primary school, led from the start to win in 52.32. Sligo AC’s Seamus Somers further enhanced his reputation with a super 55:56 to earn 8th place and 1st M40. Next Sligo AC athlete home was Raymond Byrne in 24th with 60:12 while Damien Kennedy was 28th in 61:28. Jason Mulrooney was making his return to racing and he finished 43rd in 64:19. Fintan Whelan ran 64:21 to finish in 44th position and Domhnall Melly was 60th with his 66:25. The indomitable Lucy Brennan finished in 66:54 and was 4th Female and 1st F50. There were good runs also by Sean Colreavy 69:54, Joe Davey 72:38, Enda Whelan 73:24 and 3rd M60, Roseanne Mitchel 74:33, Andrew McNabb 76:53, Stephen Gilgan 77:08, Brendan McCarrick 79:56, Enda Gilmartin 81:45, Cindy McCarthy 82:22, Amanda Kilcullen 82:17, Fiona Fahey Gilmartin 86:14, Karen Rouxel 87:48, Kieran Dowd 88:28, Hugh McGowan 88:30, Ann Marie Munnelly 88:01, Rose Young 88:53, Kieran Dowd 88.28, Vanessa Foley 88:54, Pauline McLoughlin 96:33 and Olivia Seery in 106:22. The 10k Race had 667 competitors and was won by Sligo AC’s Richard Gorman in 33:04. Eimear O Brien of Donore Harriers was 7th overall in 38:25 and this earned the Sligo Mercy College teacher 1st Female. Audrey Colreavy was 17th overall and her time of 40:12 gained her the F40 prize. aving packed their boats on Friday evening and with the experience of Lough Rynn Head under their belts the young members of Sligo Rowing Club together with mentors Molua Donohoe, Tom Colsh and Ray Murtagh travelled to Islandbridge, Dublin on Saturday morning to compete at the two-day event of Neptune and Commercial regattas which are held over consecutive days on the same stretch of water on the River Liffey. Conor Whelehan rowed a great race in what was his second competitive outing exhibiting great potential whilst the commitment to training of the junior 15 quad paid off winning their heat comfortably but unfortunately loosing out to the eventual category winners by half a length. Andrew Waters, Killian McCarthy and Angus Carter can be particularly proud of their performance in this their first competitive season rowing as a crew together. The women’s Junior 16 double of Erin O’Connor and Neasa Henehan had a cracking first race winning their qualifying heat by half a length whilst just been beaten on the line in the semifinal which can be attributed no doubt to their tough qualifier. New comers Isabelle Waters, Mairead Kavanagh and Siofra Kelleher also put in strong performances which they can build upon as their first competitive season progresses. The weekend however belonged to Brian Colsh who’s commitment to training both on land and water during the winter months paid dividends with Brian putting

TUBBERCURRY 10K
National Juvenile Indoor Championships. There were some fine Sligo AC performances at the National Juvenile Indoor Championships in Athlone. Congrats to Ruth Monaghan. In the 1K Walk Under 15 Women, Ruth was 2nd in 5:01, just edging out Waterford AC’s Claire Caulfield. Well done also to Eva Delahunt who placed 3rd in the 1.5K Walk U17 Women and to Ryan Roberts in the 1.5K Walk U17 Men who was also 3rd with his 7:20. Meanwhile Ailbhe Morgan ran a good 5:11 in the U17 1500M to finish 12th while Daragh Williams ran 4:37 in the U17 1500M. In the 60M Under 12 Ornagh Murphy finished 3rd in her heat with a nippy 8:82. Well done to you all.

T
he 44th Annual Tubbercurry 10K was held in wet and windy conditions on St Patrick’s Day. The race was won by Sligo AC’s J.P. Carty. J.P. took an early lead over the testing opening 5K and, once he passed the half way mark, his superior speed over the faster second half ensured he would not be caught. Emmett Dunleavy was 2nd in 33.41 which was remarkable considering he broke his collar bone less than 4 weeks ago. The ever improving Fintan Whelan was 15th in 38:20 and he was closely followed
home by Domhnall Melly in 38:23. Great to see Danny Hannon back in action after a long absence and he was 3rd M50 with his 39:31. Sligo AC coach Karl Boyce was 4th M50 in 40:38 while Bill Carty ran 41:28. Philip Morrison was 1st M60 in 43:50 while Enda Whelan was 2nd M60 in 45:14. There were good runs also by Ossian Geraghty 41:48, Stephen Gilgan 44:52, Enda Gilmartin 45:57, Kieran Dowd 47:25, Brendan McCarrick 47:49, Paul Reilly 47:46, Ronan O’Hart
51:12 and Aidan Kelly 57:18. The Ladies team also had a good day by winning the team prize. Ladies captain Lucy Brennan led the team home finishing 2nd Female and 1st F50 in 40:10. Next to score was Mari Johnston who was 3rd Female and 1st F45 in 41:52. Fionuala Silke ran a 12 second PB of 46:07 and Amanda Kilcullen was 4th scorer with her 48:37. Well done to all the runners and also to South Sligo AC on a well organised race.
Well done to all the St.John's GAA coaches
A great evening for St John's GAA with the lights turned on on their training pitch. The addition of this facility makes Stenson Park up there among the best. Well done to Terry Mc Nulty, Paul Mc Lean, Niall Gordon, and Jim Browne

T
he ever popular and by now legendary Mullaghmore Triathlon, takes place on 17th June 2017 in the beautiful seaside village of Mullaghmore. The race now in its 17th year, is organised by local triathlon club
MSC Tri in partnership with Mullaghmore Sailing Club, who are delighted to welcome new sponsorship for 2017 from local firms, Martin Reilly Motors and The Pier Head Hotel, Spa & Leisure Centre. Entry is open online at triathlonireland.com and already this very popular race is expected to reach capacity with a strong surge in entry in recent weeks both locally and nationwide. The race commences on Mullaghmore beach with competitors swimming 750m, or 300m for the short option, to the Sailing Club slipway. Here they exit the water, and set out on a 20km cycle to Grange Village before returning to the Sailing Club to commence the 5km run around magnificent Mullaghmore Head. There has been huge interest in this race over the years, and last year was voted one of the top races in Ireland by members of Triathlon Ireland. Organisers were delighted with 9th place out of
over 230 Triathlon Ireland sanctioned races countrywide. Furthermore, Red Bull Ireland recently named Mullaghmore Triathlon No. 2 on its list of Top Ten Triathlons in Ireland. Competitors will compete for the Mullaghmore Triathlon Perpetual Trophies, over €1000 in cash prizes, and other great prizes. Last year's race was won most impressively by Kevin Keane with the fastest bike split of the day at just over 30 minutes for the 20km while the ladies race was won by Breda Daly with a total time of 1hr and 13 minutes. An exciting new element to this year’s event, is the inclusion of a Junior Aquathlon for children aged 8 to 15 years. Speaking at the launch of the event at the Pier Head Hotel today, Club Secretary, Pamela Zarb, outlined that the event will comprise of a short swim followed by a run of various distances, depending on the age group. This is an exciting addition to the Mullaghmore Triathlon event given the host of talent in both the local swimming
and running clubs. MSC Tri Club have added a junior section to the Club in 2017 and are excited to see a new crop of multi-sports junior athletes competing on 17th June. MSC Tri Club Coach & Training Officer, Tony Cummins, emphasises that it is within the capability of anyone with moderate training to take part and complete this sprint triathlon. Mullaghmore Triathlon is an event

designed to facilitate all levels from elite to newbie and everything in between. Launching the event today at the Pier Head Hotel in Mullaghmore, Club Chairman and this year’s Race Director, Noel Hoey, thanked all those involved in the organisation of the race, which requires the cooperation of both voluntary and state organisations to cater for the expected 400 triathletes.

SLIGO LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALLERS SHOW NO MERCY IN MADRID
O
ne of the fastest growing sports in Ireland, ladies Gaelic football is also one of the most competitive. With teams from every county now competing, taking home the trophy has never been more difficult. All of which makes the achievements of the Sligo ladies team and Mercy College all the more remarkable. Recently taking home the title at this years’ Invitational European Cup in Madrid, it’s taken a few years, and a lot of hard work to get where they are today, so says team manager Jacqui Mulligan. We sent Eamon O’Neill to the side lines, to take up the story. The rise of Mercy College’s Gaelic football club has been nothing short of astounding. With a small number of players, thoughts of producing a winning squad would have been almost unthinkable just a few short years ago. But that all changed when Jacqui Mulligan came to the school in 2010. Passionate about the sport, the P.E. and Geography teacher saw a squad in need of rejuvenation. “Oh gosh, things were not good
at all”, she says as we sit down for our chat; “we only had fifteen players in the entire school”. A motivated and driven individual, Jacqui’s passion for the game saw her set about transforming the club, stirring interest in the sport and galvanising the students. “We started from ground level, and a serious amount of work has gone in”, she says: “A lot of our girls had never played club football. The captain of our senior team had never played Gaelic since she started Mercy College”. An incredible amount of effort was therefore required to boost the interest in the sport, and that has now resulted in a new lease of life for the Gaelic in the school; “We now have a first year team, we’ve an under14 team, we’ve an under 16 team, and we’ve the senior team, so we’ve four teams”, say the accomplished coach. Jacqui’s passion for Gaelic is infectious, and not only does she manage the teams, but is also on the Sligo senior squad herself: “We’re the only school in the county where there’s a
teacher as well as the pupils in it”, she states proudly. When I offer that there must be a strange kind of camaraderie, Jacqui agrees; “Yes, but it’s unique as well”, she adds. With Sligo ladies in a stronger position than ever, the senior team got invited to take on some of the best in the continent, at the European Cup in Madrid, which took place in March. “We have two people who came on board as managers with me in the last year; Daithí MacFhlaithimh and Maurice O’Connor, and it was through Maurice that we got the invitation to go to Madrid and represent Sligo”, says Jacqui, taking up the remarkable story. With the trip to Spain booked, the aim was simply to do their best, however, the team achieved so much more than they thought they could. “We went over with the hope of competing well, but when we got there was a real feeling that, gosh, we really could do this”, says Jacqui. “The standard
was really similar to our own, and we eventually went undefeated in all the group games”, she says, almost disbelievingly. Playing against a number of Irish and expat teams including Kildare’s Kill Ladies and Madrid Harps, the squad found themselves making the final. “It went from us participating, to us securing the tournament”, says the proud manager. Beating the Kildare side 4-10 to 1-9, the victory crowned what has been an incredible journey for the team. “It was a great surprise”, says Jacqui; “we’ve some quality players, and they really performed that day”. The senior team isn’t short of top performers, and although everyone plays their part, Jacqui singles out some for their special contribution, like forward Leah Kelly who was “absolutely superb in the tournament”, second year pupil and goalkeeper Patricia Lacorte, who “made saves that a senior would aspire to make”, and team captain Michelle McNamara. Individual perform-
ances however, do not make a great team, and Jacqui is a big believer in a strong teamwork ethic; “I prefer players that are going to work hard, rather than a player who is multi-talented”, she offers; “that would be my ethos”. With numbers growing, and a major title now on their record, Sligo Ladies have made it into the bigger leagues of club football, and are ready to face their next challenge. “The ambition is there”, concludes the manager as our chat nears an end. “We compete in the Connacht League now, and reached the semi-final this year. The goal now is to come back, push on, and make the final and win it next year”, she states, affirmingly. As we wrap up, Jacqui sums up the state of the sport, which is growing ever popular; “It’s healthy, but there’s always room for improvement”, she cautions, before allowing a little recognition at last; “but yeah, it’s in a very healthy place from where we’ve come”.

Sligo Surf Lifesavers perform strongly at Irish Water Safety Stillwater Nationals
T
he recently held Irish Water Safety National Stillwater competition saw teams and individual competitors from counties across the country, including Sligo Surf Lifesaving club, deliver strong performances across junior (1416), seniors )16+) and
masters(30+) over two days at the Sports Arena in University of Limerick. Through a variety of events, competitors test their Surf Lifesaving skills and abilities against one another in a highly competitive manner. Events are designed to test the
specific skillsets required to be a Surf Lifesaver including underwater obstacle courses, simulated manikin rescues and relay events. Sligo were strongly represented with a junior boys team, senior mens team and individual competitors in the
junior girls and masters category. All competitors did their club and county proud, delivering strong performances with a number of top 10 and medal finishes most notably from Sligo Surflifesavers brothers and Irish national surflifesaving squad members, Joseph Mooney and Peter Mooney, with Joseph securing the only broken individual Irish record in the 100m manikin carry with fins. Also in the junior boys, Adam Hunter and Niall O'Connor secured a fantastic third place national finish in the line throw. Other notable performances were delivered from the junior boys Augustine Bamber, Orin Mitchell and Niall O'Donovan and junior girl, Ellen Woodward
who delivered strong performances in both the individual and relay events including top 10 finishes. Overall the senior men finished an exemplary third place finish in the national rankings with the juniors securing a ninth place finish overall. Attention now turns to the nippers (age 8-14) of Sligo Surf Lifesaving Club who competed at the Connacht/ Ulster regional on 26th March 2017 at Sligo Regional Sports Centre. After their success in the competition, many Nippers have qualified to compete at the Nationals which will be held in the Sports Arena, University of Limerick on the 22nd April 2017.

All Ireland Schools' Cross Country Sligo AC athletes performed superbly in the All Ireland Schools' Cross Country Championships in Belfast. The sticky underfoot terrain at the Mallusk course may have provided a test of strength and skill for the competitors but all the Sligo AC runners passed with flying colours. There was plenty of drama in the Junior Boys 3,600M and Michael Morgan was in the thick of the action. Michael finished 6th in a spectacular sprint finish with a mere 1 second separating 3rd and 6th. Michael had the consolation of earning International Qualification for the Irish Schools team in Wales, a just reward for the talented Summerhill College student. In the Minor Girls 2,000M, Niamh Walsh finished in 36th and Caoimhe Conor was 46th. Ailbhe Morgan was 38th in her Inter Girls 3,600M. Meanwhile in the Inter Boys 5,200M, Daragh Williams was 73rd and Jack Conor 78th. Good running also by Leo Doherty who was 64th in the Senior Boys 6,500M. Well done to you all. You are certainly a credit to your club and your schools.

1ST EVER CO.SLIGO PELLA TOURNAMENT
The 1st ever Pella tournament to be held in Co.Sligo took place in the hall of Sligo Tennis Club on Sunday 12th March. The tournament was an under 12 competition and consisted of 8 Sligo based teams. The teams involved were St.Johns, Calry/St.Josephs, Drumcliffe Rosses Point, St. Pats and 2
teams each from St.Molaise Gaels and Coolera/Strandhill. After 2 extremely well contested groups, the results saw St.Johns top group 1 on score difference ahead of Drumcliffe Rosses Point who adavanced to the semi finals in second. In the mid afternoon group it was Calry/St.Josephs
who topped Group 2 on % points ahead of 2nd placed St.Molaise Gaels on 4. However the semi-finals played in the afternoon proved to turn the form books upside down as both group runners up ( St.Molasie Gaels & Drumcliffe Rosses Point) won their games to advance to the Final. To
prove how evenly contested the finals were can highlighted by the fact that there was no more than 1 score between any of the games played in the afternoon. The final of the tournament done justice to the very high standard of skill and drama on show all day as Drumcliffe

1ST EVER CO.SLIGO PELLA TOURNAMENT
Have your first 5k race coming up and wondering how to eat healthier?
Article by Aoife Clancy
T
here is a lot to be said for following good nutrition combined with regular exercise. You could be running regularly and may not be seeing the benefits you’d hoped for be it losing weight, gaining muscle or better sports performance. After a run you should be consuming a healthy well balanced meal of carbohydrates, protein and a little fat. Carbohydrates are a primary fuel source needed for energy. Good options are wholegrain rice, wholegrain pasta, white potato, sweet potato, wholegrain breads and cereals. Protein feeds your muscles and helps them to repair and rebuild. Some good protein sources are lean cuts of red meat, chicken, turkey, salmon, cod, eggs, nuts and pulses (beans, peas and lentils). Fats provide the body with key nutrients important for various functions. They should be consumed in small amounts and the best options are unsaturated fats. These are found in high amounts in nuts, seeds, oily fish and vegetable oil such as olive or sunflower oil. Here are a few key points in order to help you follow a healthy diet when running: • Look at your portion sizes- your protein source should be the size of a deck of playing cards, one portion of carbohydrate is equal to two heaped tablespoons of rice or half a large baked potato and one fat portion is equal to one teaspoon of vegetable oil or one small dice of butter • Don’t cut out vital nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein, dairy or fat • Consume at least 5 portions of fruit or vegetables per day • Drink plenty of water- average requirements are 30- 40ml per kilogram of bodyweight • Cut down on alcohol- it is high in caloric value and is not an effective energy source for the working muscles Call Aoife on 087-1276164 or find her on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/acnutritionandfitness

SLIGO SUPER CUP I
t’s all systems go for the Sligo Super Cup, featuring elite young players from academies across Ireland and the UK, which takes place at the Showgrounds from April 28th-30th. With the likes of Celtic and Sheffield Wednesday adding glamour and excitement to the innovative under-12 tournament, bookings are already beginning to come in from supporters planning to take in a Bank Holiday break in Sligo. Jointly hosted by Sligo Rovers and the Sligo/Leitrim District Schoolboys/Girls League, the tournament has been boosted by major sponsorship from the Pet Stop Discount Warehouse and Fuel Centre, Carraroe Retail Park, Sligo. Company Director, John McKeon, expressed delight at partnering with the Sligo Super Cup as main sponsor. “We are always thrilled to support community initiatives, and particularly when it involves sport and young people. As an avid soccer supporter, I believe this tournament deserves all the backing it can get. “It’s about promoting a healthy competitive spirit, com-

munity involvement, and cross-border exchanges, as well as putting Sligo to the forefront as an ideal venue for high class international tournaments. “For all those reasons, I am proud to be the main sponsor of the inaugural Sligo Super Cup and I have no doubt it will be a major success,” John said. Tournament Director, Packie Lynch, thanked John for his generous backing of the tournament. “Particularly in the first year, local support is vital for this type of initiative. We have been very fortunate with the outstanding generosity of a number of sponsors, none moreso than John McKeon. John has always been a willing supporter of worthy local causes, and we are delighted to have him on board”, Packie added. As final preparations are put in place for a tournament which features 16 matches over three action-packed days, stand out fixtures include Celtic against the hosts Sligo/Leitrim on Friday, April 28th and the intriguing meeting of Celtic and Linfield on the following morning. Full fixture schedule will be published in advance of the tournament.
Swim Ireland Roadshow Sligo SC was well represented at Jon Rudd’s Swim Ireland NPD Roadshow in Claremorris, last night. Jon Rudd is the recently appointed National Performance Director and he is currently travelling around the country to outline his vision and plans for the future. Jon spoke passionately to his Connacht audience about his plans for the nation at Regional, National and International levels – some of which will have an immediate impact on swimming in our country and some of which will be more visible as we approach the next Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.
With the Head of the Season about to conclude and with many heads cancelled including the recent Galway Head on the Corrib Sligo coaches were keen for their crews and particularly the newer members of the club to get some valuable race time and experience at their first competitive event ahead of the regatta season. With that in mind Sligo coaches Tom Colsh and Molua Donohue worked with in conjunction with Fergie Hannon of Athlone Boat Club and John Lowe of Carrick on Shannon Rowing Club to schedule and run a very successful event for the 3 clubs on the Lough Rynn course where Sligo provided the medals, Carrick the safety launches and Athlone the personnel to marshal the event. All three clubs worked together seamlessly and a great days racing was had by all ahead of the upcoming sprint regatta season. Newcomers to the sport Angus Carter, Adam Rattigan, Andrew Waters and Killion McCarthy all performed very well on the water at Lough Rynn for the junior boys while Isabelle Waters had an exceptional row in the double in her first competitive event. The sprint regatta season now commences in earnest with the club travelling to Islandbridge in Dublin for a racing weekend with Neptune Regatta to be held on Saturday followed by Commercial Regatta on the same stretch of water on Sunday. The club continues to fund raise on a monthly basis to fund the purchasing of new equipment including a new single which will be delivered this month from Portugal. The boat is to be named after the Lady of the Lake – “Beezie Gallagher” who daily rowed the same stretch of water as that which the club now trains on. A boat naming ceremony will be held to formally name the boat together with the “Dooney Rock” quad and the “Slish Wood” single which were purchased last year with the assistance of SCP funding. The club also enjoyed the recent St. Patricks Day Parade rowing a double through town winning the Best Represents Theme Sports award. The float designed by Ray Murtagh, sponsored by Diverse Print & Graphics and built by Bernie Tiernan was well received by the general public. Sligo Rowing Club will again host their own sprint regatta on Saturday 29th July in Doorly Park.
