T’S General Election time again. The speculation was brought to an abrupt end on Tuesday when Taoiseach Leo Varadkar briefed the Cabinet and opposition leaders before making the journey to the Aras for a short meeting with the President. It is the first time a sitting Taoiseach has opted for a Saturday poll and though Saturday 8th February is three weeks away the fun and games have already begun with the various parties and groupings setting out their stalls. Many pundits say the outcome may give rise to another confidence and supply arrangement but with a different party heading the government. Many are even indicating their coalition preferences while, of course, nobody will talk with Sinn Fein! The Saturday choice seems to be a popular one. The logic it seems is based on an effort to encourage more young people to vote and to make it easier for working families, in particular those who might have to pay childcare if the election was held on a weekday. Mr Varadkar feels now is the best time to hold an election with the Brexit deal in place and the restoration of power-sharing in Northern Ireland. However, he admits the progress that had been made during the reign of the present government was not enough and many people do not feel the strength of the economy in their pockets or in their town. He will focus on what has been done and what can be done in the future. But he must have concerns about the behaviour of some of his TDs and a possible backlash in the polls over the goings-on. Fianna Fáil and all the others will, by and large, be honing in on the government’s poor record on housing and health. At local level, it will provide newcomers like Fine Gael’s Alan Dillon the chance to finally experience “the real thing” on the doorsteps, in addition to Achill’s Saoirse McHugh (Greens) and PBP’s Joe Daly, a local secondary school teacher from Castlebar. Consultants appointed to Ballina digital hub project
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Senator Michelle Mulherin at the hub in autumn. IT’S good news for Ballina. Consultants have been appointed by Mayo County Council for the development of the Ballina Digital Hub in the town's former military barracks. Senator Michelle Mulherin welcomed the news, stating: "I have been informed by Mayo County Council that following the tendering process the authority has appointed the following: Civil and Structural Engineers, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers and Quantity Surveyors. "The next step is detailed design of the project and preparation for the appointment of a contractor for the
construction. This is wonderful news that brings Ballina Digital Hub and Innovation Quarter a step nearer. "The hub will see the creation of over 200 jobs in an exciting and pioneering project that marks the start of a new era for the town and its hinterland. "Since it was announced, I have continued to work closely with Eoghan Murphy, Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, and Mayo County Council to keep this project moving. "The hub will give Ballina the edge in tapping into the digital transformation that is changing the way we all do business. "I was delighted to be able to bring
Taoiseach on a site visit to Ballina in September to see the plans and hear more about the project. The Taoiseach was most impressed and confirmed the Government’s commitment to the funding of €3.2m under Project Ireland 2040 for the development of the project. "Technology, digital media and internet companies will be based in the new enterprise cluster in the town centre location that will provide office spaces for 20 firms nurturing an atmosphere of creativity and support where the digital companies can grow their business. "The hub will also be the home for a distillery which will create jobs in the production of high-end rum. "As a collaborative space for digital companies to scale and grow, Ballina Innovation Quarter will kickstart significant enterprise and entrepreneurial activity and increase the attractiveness of Ballina and surrounding communities for further investment. "This project will also restore a centrepiece in Ballina's built heritage, the Military Barracks, built in 1742, and unlock its tourism and cultural potential. “Ballina Chamber of Commerce and local businesses played a crucial part in bringing this project to fruition and their support and enterprise will ensure Ballina is recognised as a place to start and grow a digital business."The Ballina Digital Hub is further evidence of the commitment of the Fine Gael-led government to rejuvenate Ballina and its hinterland of north and east Mayo” said Ms. Mulherin.
Dara named as FF Director of Elections THE waiting is over. With the announcement of the General Election Leo Varadkar has broken the mould by selecting Saturday, February 8th. Most of the parties and candidates were getting into a state of preparedness anyway as a scent of the hustings was in the air. In the interim Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin was getting his house in order and selected his deputy leader and Mayo TD Dara Calleary as director of elections for the 2020 general election. Deputy Calleary, who was also director of elections for the local elections in May 2019, has responsibility for the general election candidates across all constituencies and is already prominent with TV appearances. Commenting following his
appointment, Deputy Calleary said: “It is an honour to be appointed our party’s director of elections for the upcoming general election. “Our party enjoyed great success back in May 2019 when we were returned as the largest party in local government. This was a testament to the hard work and dedication of our candidates and their teams and our wider organisation and this is something we will be replicating for the general election. “We have a very strong team of candidates, a solid message and we are ready to fight and win the next general election, whenever it may be.” Now that he knows the day and the date it is down to policies (and politics) for Dara over the coming weeks.

Tommy Heraghty Tractor Run a great success Graveyard Maintenance Fund. The response from the local farming community and from all local tractors owners was fantastic with increased numbers all round participating. Many others came along on the day to support the event from infants in prams to others, who were well past the four score and ten age category. With the announcement of the General Election date imminent there were a number of candidates and local County Councillors, including some current Oireachtas members, in the attendance at Manorhamilton Mart prior to the tractor run’s commencement. Naturally, they are now occupied with primary electoral matters in the lead-up to polling day on February 8th.
M
anorhamilton IFA’s tenth annual tractor run, which was this year renamed the Tommy Heraghty Memorial Tractor Run in honour of Tommy, one of its founding members, was an outstanding success. Weather conditions on New Year’s Day were excellent for the tractor run, perhaps the best ever experienced since the first ever tractor run took place on New Year’s Day 2011. The starting point was Manorhamilton Mart and hundreds came along to make donations to the two charities for which the tractor run was being promoted this year, namely the St. Clare’s Church Graveyard Fund and the Manorhamilton Parish Church

Educate Together Westport planning refusal to be appealed AN appeal has been lodged by Educate Together to An Bord Pleanála against Mayo County Council’s decision not to grant planning permission for its proposed new school in Westport. The Authority refused planning permission last November for the change the
use of the former social welfare offices on Prospect Avenue in Westport so that it could be turned into an Educate Together primary school. The development also included the construction of an extension, modifications to the existing building and the creation of a play area to the
Educate Together Westport school principal Niall Quinn pictured with Christy Hyland, Cathaoirleach, West Mayo Municipal District, at the Education together School opening in Septembar.
front, side and rear of the building. It was stated that the old social welfare offices would contain four classrooms catering for up to 100 persons, including staff. The building is located in a cul-de-sac, and permission was refused due to the lack of parking facilities and a set down area. Educate Together lodged an appeal with An Bord Pleanála on December 17 in an attempt to overturn Mayo County Council’s decision. The Westport Educate Together NS, which opened in September 2019, is currently located in a temporary location at Sharkey Hill Community Centre. In a design statement submitted in the original application, Axo Architects, on behalf of Educate Together, stated that the car-parking requirements associated with the school would be less than the car-parking provision associated with the former social welfare building.
They stated that off-street car-parking is already in existence on the streets and car parks in the surrounding vicinity of the site, and they proposed to have a drop-off area located on John’s Row, with a pedestrian crossing and public path linking the drop-off zone to the school. However, there were objections from two owners of homes on Prospect Avenue, who felt the location was not suitable for a school and would give rise to parking and trafficcongestion issues. In the planning report, Mayo County Council planners stated that eight car parking spaces are required for this development and no car parking is available on site. As a result, they said, the development would endanger public safety by reason of a traffic hazard, and permission was refused. An Bord Pleanála is due to give its decision on the appeal by April 29.

Story by Gerry Walsh
T
OMMY Cooke is one of Ballina’s best known personalities, with a life-long involvement in the cultural and sporting life of the town and North Mayo generally. At times he has thrown his hat into the political ring and served his community well as a local councillor. In his latest project he combines his sense of community with his many literary/dramatic talents to produce a unique fun-filled show which is guaranteed to pack Ballina Arts Centre for three nights in early February. All proceeds will go to Anthony Golden Community Park Fund. The Poet’s Bar, written and produced by Tommy, is a compendium of stories, poems, songs and conversation set in an Irish pub in the 1960s. With many years of experience in the hospitality industry in Ballina and further afield, he has accumulated a wealth of stories and folklore. In the play the barman closes the till at midnight and to be served a drink after this time patrons must either sing a song, recite a poem, tell a story or perform in some way. This is the atmosphere that’s recreated in The Poets Bar. Speaking to Mayo Now last week Tommy said he began writing some songs back in the ‘70s, including a particular one called “Amsterdam” which became a party-piece and one he regularly performed returning from sporting events. Only recently, a recording of the song made in Ballina Rugby club achieved over 200,000 Facebook hits. In recent times, with retirement beckoning he returned to writing – this time stories about people he know and stories which people told him about
themselves, particularly humorous ones. Almost simultaneously, Tommy, with his wife, Clair, became involved locally with the fund-raising effort for the Tony Golden Community Park project in Ballina and, with 35 others, undertook the Malin to Mizen Cycle. To continue the drive for funds for this worthy project some months ago he commenced the process of putting together a variety of pieces – original songs, stories and poems – which became the genesis of The Poets Bar. “I composed four original songs and ten original pieces focussing on our home place, Ballina and North Mayo, reflecting the ever-changing seasons on the river and Belleek Wood, features which serve to embellish the area”, he said. Emigration is a central theme – the heartbreak of having to leave home, the loving and longing, the welling of emotions. People talk about going away and a longing to come home. They long to return home from other places in Ireland and from four or five different continents. The play features a true story about a man from Tourlestrane in the 1950s/’60s and his journey to London - with no place to go, no one to meet and no job - and how it worked out for him. He was just 14 years of age. In a subtle change of theme the action moves back in time to 1846 (famine times) and the 137 Australian-bound orphan girls from Mayo, so eloquently chronicled by local historian Terry Reilly in “The Forgotten Famine Girls”. For this section, Tommy has penned a song about one of the brave girls featured, Mary Barrett from Addergoole. No Mayo-based story is complete without a reference to the Green and Red. Here, again, the longing for home comes
to the surface in a song penned by Tommy. It features something which is woven into our DNA at this stage, the longing to win that ever-elusive All-Ireland. Some of Tommy’s own experiences over decades in the bar and hotel business come to the fore in the latter part of the show. These extracts, presented in verse, reveal much about the lives and loves, trials and tribulations, of the many characters he met, some dating back to the 1960s – painters, plumbers, unemployed, ordinary people. Each character has a number of stories to tell, most of them laced with the type of humour prevailing at the time. The show will definitely resurrect some of the wit, humour and practices common in the public house environment of bygone days, some of which may not be considered politically correct in the modern pub setting. In the play the pub itself is raided as part of the action. The evening will finish with a special piece on the character of Anthony Golden himself, featuring a special song written by Tommy on the evening before the Malin to Mizen event. There will be a cast of twenty people, including five musicians. Some of the actors have a wealth of experience while for others it will a first-time performance. The Anthony Golden Community Park Committee will help with the set and there will be a crew to assist the musicians and actors. The Poets Bar comes to Ballina Arts Centre on 7th, 8th and possibly 9th of February. Starting time is 8 p.m. and cover charge is €15.00. It promises to be a special evening of entertainment and the proceeds will help realise a worthwhile community objective.

New regulations make it illegal to sell puppies under 8 weeks old older in order to be sold and that all adverts selling dogs and puppies must clearly display the dog’s microchip number. This is a significantly positive step forward in improving dog welfare in Ireland as it ensures the traceability of dogs being sold, back to the seller. In the past, people could be duped into buying a sick puppy under false pretenses with little or no guarantee from the person they purchased the dog from, but with these new regulations, this is about to change!” Dogs Trust are calling on members of the public to help make these improvements successful by avoiding buying dogs or puppies if a microchip number is not present on an advert, as this is an indication the seller does not want to be traceable and raises a very big red flag for the welfare of the dog and the conditions they are being kept in. New regulations make it illegal to sell puppies under 8 weeks old. Sale of dog adverts must now include the microchip number.

ogs Trust, Ireland’s largest dog welfare charity, has welcomed the government’s introduction of new regulations to the Animal Health and Welfare Act (2013) regarding the sale of pets. The charity, along with other leading welfare organisations, has long campaigned against the sale of puppies younger than eight weeks of age and for the increased traceability of those selling dogs. The new regulations require that all adverts selling dogs must now include the dog’s individual microchip number and if applicable, the seller’s registration number. Welcoming the government’s announcement, Becky Bristow, Executive Director of Dogs Trust Ireland said: “For many years Dogs Trust has campaigned to improve the welfare of dogs in Ireland and we applaud the decision by Minister Michael Creed to improve the traceability of dogs being sold. We are particularly happy it is now a requirement for puppies to be eight weeks of age or

ven better, more spacious, safer, more connected and more emotive than ever: with the launch of the fourth generation of its bestseller, ŠKODA has reached new dimensions. The heart and engine of the ŠKODA brand is longer and wider than its predecessor, has an even larger boot and is even more emotive thanks to the new ŠKODA design language. The new interior concept combines an excellent amount of space and outstanding functionality with highquality materials and clever details. Innovative connectivity and new assistance systems raise comfort and safety to an even higher level. ŠKODA AUTO CEO, Bernhard Maier, said, “For ŠKODA, the OCTAVIA is of immense importance. That’s why we’ve completely redeveloped this car. The outcome is the best OCTAVIA of all time – it is even more spacious, practical and even safer than ever before. By unveiling its latest generation just in time for its 60th anniversary, we have taken a major step forward. The OCTAVIA has significantly contributed to the positive development of the company and the brand. Over the last six decades. I am very confident that the new generation will play its part in maintaining this positive development.” Sixty years after production of the OCTAVIA started in 1959, ŠKODA is now unveiling the best model yet since its relaunch in 1996. The fourth-generation OCTAVIA will continue to be the brand’s heart and engine as well as its top volume model. With more than 6.5 million units produced, it is the bestselling ŠKODA ever and has been a real icon for many years, both in its Czech home country as well as in numerous other markets around the world. The reasons for this are obvious: it features a modern design and modern technology, it is efficient, extremely practical and high-quality; it offers exceptional amounts of space and superior value for money. The new OCTAVIA has grown further
and, thanks to new proportions and the latest developments in ŠKODA’s design language, is even more emotive and dynamic than its successful predecessor. At a length of 4,689 mm, the hatchback is 19 mm and the COMBI 22 mm longer than the third-generation model. Its width has increased by 15 mm. The COMBI’s boot capacity, which is the largest in the segment, has increased by 30 l to 640 l. The hatchback has a capacity of 600 l – 10 l more than the previous generation. The new front apron and the razor-sharp, narrower, new headlights are a visual delight and feature LED technology for low beam, high beam and daytime running lights as standard. The tail lights, brake lights and fog lights make use of LED technology as well. The newly designed, shallow roof rails emphasise the elongated silhouette of the OCTAVIA COMBI, while the hatchback looks almost like a coupé. Alloy wheels measuring up to 19 inches lend all of the model variants a powerful appearance. Crystal Black, Lava Blue and Titanium Blue have been newly added to the range of paint finishes; a Chrome and a Dynamic package are optional extras. New interior concept and a multi-level dashboard In the newly designed interior, the OCTAVIA offers a new two-spoke steering wheel, which can be heated as an option and – if ordered as a multifunction variant – comes with new control buttons and knurled scroll wheels, allowing drivers to operate a total of 14 different functions without removing their hands. The dashboard, which has also been redesigned, is modular and has been arranged in different levels, featuring a large, free-standing central display. The centre console is elegant, uncluttered and adorned with chrome details – as are the new door trims and handles. New and soft-touch materials lend the interior a premium look, while the new LED ambient lighting provides a special visual touch for the front doors and dashboard
by indirectly illuminating them in a choice of ten different colours – even in a variety of colours if desired. Coordinated lighting scenarios can also be selected. Optional, particularly back-friendly Ergo seats, which among other things offer an electric massage function, are available for the first time in a ŠKODA. In the top version, they can also be ventilated and bear the seal of approval of the German Campaign for Healthier Backs. The optional head-up display is another first for a ŠKODA. It projects the most important information such as speed, navigation, detected traffic signs and activated driver assistance systems directly onto the – optionally heated – windscreen. The 4.2-inch, multifunction Maxi DOT 16-colour display comes as standard. Tri-zone Climatronic makes its debut in the OCTAVIA. Using the optional keyless vehicle entry system (KESSY), now any one of the car’s four doors can be opened first. The standard equipment also includes electric side windows and an electromechanical parking brake. The ŠKODA OCTAVIA is now also available with acoustic side windows at the front, which reduce road noise in the cabin even further. For diesel cars, the range of the brandtypical Simply Clever features now also includes a convenient filler tube for AdBlue®, enabling it to be filled up using a lorry pump nozzle too. In the rear, two smartphone storage pockets on the front seatbacks are making their debut at ŠKODA. The Sleep package for the back seat is now also an optional extra for the OCTAVIA. In addition, new retractable sun blinds for the rear side windows make it possible to block out the light. There is a multifunction storage pocket below the boot cover in both the hatchback and the OCTAVIA COMBI; the latter will also feature an automatically retractable load cover. The storage compartment with an umbrella and hand brush in the front doors is new. The funnel integrated into the lid of the windscreen washer tank is yet another new feature in the OCTAVIA.

ere at Anne Tobin Beauty Clinic I understand the pitfalls of weight loss. Input of food must be less than output of energy and activity. This is the maths, easier said than done. You say! However I am here to guide you! I use the Dr Winterklinic meal plan with marvellous results. Every client needs motivation and support when striving to get to their recommended normal BMI. This is what is medically recommended as a healthy person's guideline. I am here to give the support. The plan includes an allergy test to pinpoint foods that the client has an intolerance to. In this way the foods that are toxic are identified and eliminated. The plan is designed for the client to lose at a safe rate at least 4kg a week. It works on the basis that insulin production is reduced in the body and weight loss is therefore speeded up. Insulin is the substance that breaks down sugar so limiting fat storage. The plan leads to a healthy change of lifestyle that helps identify and address the habits, behaviours and emotions at the root of the problem, so prepare to be transformed. The plan works because it addresses the physical and emotional reasons for weight gain and gives the tools to aid weight loss. Improve health by preventing type two diabetes and
joint and muscular pain. You'll find out why you turn to comfort eating when you are bored, stressed, tired, anxious and upset. The plan includes healthy eating options to satisfy your cravings. In order to achieve long-term goals, changes are encouraged. I will guide you with a long term plan that will give you techniques to conquer your cravings, get off the diet roller-coaster and achieve your goals. You will not be hungry on this plan as normal foods are eaten and the results speak for themselves and get rid of the sugar highs and lows. You will feel energised and will know the difference between hunger and cravings. This advisory meal plan is strictly on a one-to-one basis and is private. Along with the plan you can have lymphatic drainage and G5 massage which speeds up fluid retention and weight loss. Anne Tobin is an anatomy and physiology lecturer, allergy specialist and injury pain management therapist along with many other qualifications. Beauty classes are also available at the clinic. Anne has also been awarded by Kodak for her wedding make-up work and the clinic also offers tanning treatments and nail treatments for your wedding day. For more information call into the clinic located at 21 newline Castlebar, phone (094) 9026741 or email: annetobinbeautycollege@eircom.net.

1800 480 888 “I was fortunate to be passing a chemist shop in my home town and decided to make an appointment with the audiologist. I had a test with another provider about six months prior who recommended hearing aids costing €4,200 as it turned would not have benefited me in any way. I was keen to have a second opinion as to the cause of severe hearing loss on one side and wanted to be sure it wasn’t just age related - I’m in my 60’s. Mrs. Ann Marie Kelly’s knowledge and expertise identified a possible serious medical condition and strongly suggested referral to ENT specialist, who in turn referred me to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where I’m having on-going care. I was very impressed with Mrs. Kelly calm patient manner and her ability to explain everything without being alarmist. Definitely shows an interest and dedication in her work not seen everyday” - AC, Mayo

Call Vincent on (086) 8709220 Havin’ a Laugh Charity was established by Rennafix Group to promote positive mental health through life-enhancing activities. They are dedicated to the promotion of life-enhancing activities as essential tools for personal emotional stability and positive mental health. The charity fund-raise through the creation of events that showcase the life-enhancing activities available in our locality. The ethos of the organisation is that those who are ‘up for it and at it’ have a platform from which they can support those who do not have that drive. Understanding that any community or group of friends is only as strong as its weakest member. The charity has helped me so much when I was going through mental health counselling and I didn’t know where else to turn. One of the things I missed most was having no one to go for coffee with so 2 years ago I started a monthly coffee morning in Sligo. Last month we started one in Leitrim. At one of our coffee mornings we had a chat about funny stories and how important it is to have a laugh or smile even on our darkest days. We came up with the idea of bringing out a book of short, funny stories that have happened to us. The book would be a fantastic way to raise awareness of the charity and promote positive mental health. There is more information about the charity here: http://www.havinalaugh.com/

BEDROOM DESIGNS TO WATCH D
o you know that revamping your house every once in a while is required for your mental health? That may sound a little odd, but it is true; the design of your house play part in changing your mood. Besides, your house is your comfort zone because it is the only place where you get the chance to leave your responsibilities and duties at the threshold of your door, and take some time to rest and relax, shutting the noises of the world out. However, some people are satisfied with just leaving their house just the way it is without changing anything. That may vary from one person to another, but no matter how people may perceive this matter differently, you usually can’t help but fall in love with all the newly launched designs. Even if you are not the type of the person who loves changing their houses’ decoration, your bedroom can be excluded from that equation, especially because it is where you can put your exhausted body at rest or enjoy reading your favorite book on your bed without being interrupted, so it has to be greatly taken care of in order to keep yourself away from falling victim for temporary depression due to your boring environment. That does not mean that you should ignore the rest of your house; above and beyond, your preferred decorations and the way you choose to design your place can reveal a lot about your personality, thoughts, and emotions. Also, getting your home to stay trendy and updated can make you receive a lot of compliments from whoever visits your place and that will definitely boost your mood and elevate your energy level. Everybody surely likes having a place that they dearly love, so they do not find themselves staying outdoors longer that they stay at their own place, so save yourself that trouble by taking care of your home and keeping it trendy. Check out these latest home design trends.

THE POWER OF NAVY BLUE

Besides, it has been proven to be a great team member since it can greatly partner up with almost any color and still add intricacy to your room.

Unique Wedding Ideas
Y
ours won’t be just another cookiecutter wedding—here are our top ideas to make your wedding a standout celebration.
Convenient Child Care Hire a babysitter (or two) and set her up in a room so your youngest guests have a place to go when they tucker out. If it’s possible, pick a room near your reception location so parents can stop by to check in
on the tykes and then return to the party easily. Stock the room with snacks, games and a portable DVD player to keep them entertained, and make sure there’s a soft sofa and blankets for those inevitable naps. A Memorable Guest Book Think beyond the typical guest book. One creative idea we love: Create a jigsaw puzzle of your photo and let guests sign each piece. Or put out silver trays with
engraving pens so guests can carve a lasting message on a useful keepsake for you. A (Friends and) Family Tree Seating Chart You worked hard on figuring out that seating chart, so get the dinner conversation started by showing guests how they’re connected. Create a sign that shows the relationships between the guests
who will be sitting next to each other—it’ll help break the ice for those who haven’t already met. A First-Dance Confetti Drop Your first dance will be one of the highlights of your wedding, so add this extra-special touch to up the entertainment factor (and make for some serious photo ops). If your song is slow and romantic, have fresh flower petals instead of confetti dropped from the ceiling. Your rental company and florist can work together to make this happen—and don’t forget to make sure the reception waitstaff will be standing by to clean up. A Video Confessional Booth For a fresh twist on the hot photo booth trend, rent a video booth where guests can record a quick on-screen message for you. Ask your videographer to edit some of the best clips into your wedding video. Then, post your other favorite video “confessions” on your wedding website and encourage guests to check them out in your thank-you notes. A Showstopping Ceremony Exit If you play it right, your ceremony exit will be one of the most heavily photographed moments of your wedding, so forget the rose petals and birdseed. Jazz up your exit by passing out small bags of colorful confetti, paper airplanes, mini beach balls, or even lavender buds for everyone to toss your way. Even better: Stage your own mini parade by passing out parasols and noisemakers for your guests to escort you to your getaway car. A Surprise Choreographed Dance Take a few dance lessons before your wedding, but instead of the standard waltz, kick it up a notch by learning a sultry tango or a high-energy swing routine, and then surprise everyone during your first dance. For an unexpected surprise, get your dad or even your grandpa in on the act. Imagine the looks on your guests’ faces when you and your pops break into a hip-hop routine mid-father-daughter dance.

Top Tips When Choosing Your Wedding Venue C
hoosing your wedding venue can seem like a very daunting task. It really doesn't have to be. Back in my wedding coordinator days i always advised brides and grooms-to-be to arrive armed with some information. This allowed me, as the wedding coordinator, to tailor the
information to provide so as not to overwhelm the couple. You don’t need to have a 100% or even 20% visualisation of the day you want but there are a few essentials that are important to know before you start looking or visiting venues. 1. Time of Year / Specific Date:
Do you have a specific date in mind, if so you will need to check if they have it available in the first place. If not, if you want a certain time of year you will also need to check what’s available. Some venues can book as far as 2 years ahead for weekend dates. 2. Number of Guests: Will the venue have the capacity to take your numbers or do they have a minimum number of guests and your numbers are less? You will need to ask what this means for you. Knowing your numbers is also the basis of the quote process; the venue can’t let you know the full cost unless you can give them an indication of your numbers. 3. Budget: This is very important, there is no point in looking at 5 star venues if you have a 3-4 star budget, you are only teasing yourself and trust me, you will be heart broken. It’s like walking in to BT’s and seeing all of those fabulous Mulberry bags and having to walk away. Soul destroying! Once you have an idea of what you feel you are willing to spend per head on the meal, that would be a good starting point. 4. Type of Venue: You may have a preference for a specific type of venue, this can also dictate price. Wedding Venue types include: Hotel, Private Estate, Castle, Farm Location, Marquee,
Glamping, Restaurant and the list goes on. 5. Home or Abroad: Do you want to stay at home or do you want to go abroad? Searching at home for a wedding venue is obviously a great deal easier than going abroad. It also depends on your abroad location as there are some excellent destination planners in some countries and they can make the whole experience very easy. 6. Bar Closing Time / Bar Extension: Let’s face it, us Irish love a good ‘oul party and god forbid a bar closing when the craic is just getting started! One thing you should find out is what time the bar will close at and if it is standard times, can they provide a bar extension, if they can, how much will it be and if they can’t, is there another venue that you can carry on the party at. 7. Decor: Where i find most budgets clocking up all of the unforeseen costs is table and venue decor. You will need to see what comes with your package as if it is a blank canvas you will need to hire and furnish the venue or if they hotel offers a certain decor, you may want to see if you can add your personal touch to it.
8. Reputation: Always check the forums to see if other brides have reviewed your chosen venue. If there have been issues, you will be aware so that you can ensure that it doesn't happen on your watch or if they have a glowing reputation this will give you reassurance. f it’s a hotel, also check TripAdvisor as may see reviews on the rooms and food. 9. One wedding per day: For some this can be an issue, just double check if they have a one wedding per day policy. There are some venues that are huge and they can do more than one wedding per day really well but others can be opportunistic and can take 2 a day and you could end up standing next to the other bride at the bar. 10. Civil Ceremony option: A very popular choice for today’s brides and grooms is the civil ceremony. Check and see if you can host your ceremony within the venue or its grounds, this would save your guests from travelling to multiple locations. It also gives you a nicer option than the registry office. A great venue and wedding coordinator will guide you through the process and help you along the way. Good luck choosing and congratulations on your day!

Jimmy Buckley in concert Wanted - One Body Windmill Players Drama Group for Arts Centre performance Following on from last year’s hugely successful production “Don’t Tell the Wife”, Windmill Players Drama Group present “Wanted – One Body” by Charles Dyer. This hilarious murder-mystery farce is set in 1921 in the dilapidated mansion of the recently departed, but not greatly lamented, Charles Barraclough. Directed by Joe Burns, the cast of suspicious characters assemble in the thick of a violent storm for the reading of the will by solicitors Mr. Blundell (Sean Kilgannon) and Mr. Mickleby (Richard Morrissey). The whole household has gathered together: Mr. Barraclough’s stepdaughter Miss Faith Barraclough (Frances Hanley), Mabel the maid (Noeleen O’Connell), Agnes the cook (Marie Walshe), Anne Beale the secretary (Niamh Kelly), and Ted Johnson the chauffeur (John McGowan). When the will is read, we learn that the bulk of his fortune has been split between the servants, setting the house in turmoil and
uproar. Miss Faith Barraclough is furious and her even nastier sister, Miss Hope Barraclough (Caroline Carney) quickly shows she means to hang on to “her” fortune by deviously using blackmail and other browbeating to try and force the domestic staff to resign, and thereby forfeit their legacies. But something evil is afoot! There are murders, sliding panels and howls in the night. As communication with the outside world is cut off, bodies disappear, and any chance of returning to town becomes impossible, solicitors Blundell and Mickleby assume the role of detectives to piece together the clues to find the culprit. The plot thickens and twists and turns! But who did it? The aggressive chauffeur, the victimised secretary, the dippy maid, the insane undertaker, Mr. Sorrell (Kenny Sheridan) or the eccentric Dr. Brown (Bryan Kerrigan)? This play comes to Ballina Arts Centre on 22nd and 23rd February, 2020.

Most people overlook key to weight loss
T
he key to weight loss is not what you put into your mouth, but why, US researchers have
said. A lot of people have made a New Year resolution to lose weight, however many will not achieve this and among those who do, the majority will regain the weight they lose. In fact, studies suggest that twothirds of people who lose 5% of their total weight, gain it back, and the more weight a person loses, the lower their chances of keeping it off.
However, according to Dr Diane Robinson, a neuropsychologist at Orlando Health, these figures are not surprising as most people focus on the physical aspects of losing weight, such as diet and exercise, while ignoring the emotional aspect. “There is an emotional component to food that the vast majority of people simply overlook and it can quickly sabotage their efforts. In order to lose weight and keep it off long-term, we need to do more than just think about what we eat, we also need to understand
why we’re eating,” she noted. A recent survey of over 1,000 people by Orlando Health found that 31% felt that the biggest barrier to losing weight was a lack of exercise, while 26% blamed their diet. Some 17% blamed the costs associated with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, while 12% said they did not have enough time. Just one in 10 people felt that psychological wellbeing had a key role to play in weight loss. “This may explain why so many of us struggle,” Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that from a very

young age, people are emotionally attached to food. For example, as children, we may be given treats to console us when we are sad or reward us when we behave well. Furthermore, many annual celebrations, such as Halloween, Christmas and birthdays, are focused on food. “If we’re aware of it or not, we are conditioned to use food not only for nourishment, but for comfort. That’s not a bad thing necessarily, as long as we acknowledge it and deal with it appropriately,” Dr Robinson said. She pointed out that when the brain experiences any type of pleasure, whether from food or something else, it reacts in the same way - the brain releases the neurotransmitter, dopamine, which is sometimes referred to as a ‘feel good chemical’. “We feel good whenever that process is activated, but when we start to put food into that equation and it becomes our reward, it can have negative consequences,” she said. Studies have found a link
between emotional issues, such as depression and stress, and a higher body mass index (BMI). For example, some people turn to food when they are feeling low. Dr Robinson offers the following tips to help people recognise the emotional connection they may have to food: -Keep a diary every day, writing down the food you eat and your mood at the time of eating. Look for unhealthy patterns -Identify foods that make you feel good and write down why you eat them. For example, are you eating them because you feel stressed or do they evoke a certain memory Before you eat anything, ask yourself whether you are eating it because you are hungry. If you are not actually hungry, look for the root of your motive. Dr Robinson said that the main aim is to view eating as providing nourishment, not as a reward or coping mechanism. “If getting your body in shape hasn’t work out yet, maybe this time start with your mind,” she added.
