How can a smart water cooler help sustainability in schools? Single-use plastics in schools Sustainability is now a priority for many organisations. Driven by changing societal attitudes toward the environment and our impact upon it, organisations of all shapes and sizes are increasingly looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact. Last year, single-use, a term referring to products – often made of plastic – that are made to be used once and

thrown away, was named as Collins Dictionary’s word of the year. Effective awareness-raising campaigns about plastics in 2018 and the global success of David Attenborough’s BBC Blue Planet II series looking at the health of our oceans have helped to bring the issue to the attention of businesses and consumers alike. This growing awareness also extends to our schools and education system. In fact, at the end of 2018 the education secretary Damian Hinds urged head teachers in England to consider using sustainable

plastics could do to the environment and wildlife.

Reducing the environmental impact of drinking water Globally, it has been reported that one million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute. Plastic bottles are commonly made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) which takes 400 years to naturally decompose. More than 480 billion plastic drinking

bottles were sold in 2016 across the world, up from around 300 billion a decade ago. It is expected that this number will rise another 20 per cent by 2021. Skywell, a smart atmospheric watercooler available from Sharp and its partners in Europe, is an environmentally friendly alternative to bottle-fed dispensers or plastic bottles, removing the need for water deliveries or single-use bottles. At a time when consumers and businesses are actively seeking ways to minimise their environmental impact, technology like Skywell has the potential to help us all think differently about drinking water. It works by taking in ambient air and collecting moisture through condensation, which is then filtered. The water goes through a sevenstage air and water filtration system, ultraviolet purification and ozone
