THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS
Best of luck Mr Baglee! The 19th September saw our celebration of Paul Baglee’s career with over 30 years of service to education in Newham. The event saw speeches from Anna Crispin, Iqbal Vaza, Tim Harrison, the Chair of NAPH Caroline Crompton on behalf of Heads in Newham, Ellen Kemp on behalf of Newham Governors Association, the whole Governor Services team also did a very moving speech and of course Paul himself. We now all finally know all the details of that sticky incident involving the police. I’m sure you will join us in wishing Paul all the best for his retirement.

NEW TRAINING COURSES As part of The Education Spaces continued commitment to deliver excellent training courses tailored to meet the needs of school’s we are pleased to announce the following new training courses.
Mental Health First Aid Training Changes in the Health and Safety Executive first aid guidance now state that companies “should consider ways to manage mental ill health such as providing training, appointing mental health trained first aiders and implementing employee support programmes”. In today’s world, mental ill health accounts for over half of all workplace absence. With 24/7 connectivity, it’s no wonder that our “always on” mentality is taking its toll. Half of workers feel under excessive pressure and regularly feel exhausted and/or miserable ( CIPD 2018) and it is estimated that 15.4 million working days were lost due to work related stress, depression and anxiety last year (HSE). Research has shown that employees suffering from mental ill health find it harder to juggle multiple tasks and concentrate, take longer to complete tasks, and are more likely to get into conflict with colleagues. Of course, mental ill health goes beyond stress, anxiety and depression, there are a huge number of disorders, which vary in severity, duration and prevalence. With its impact upon how employees feel, their performance, efficiency, relationships with colleagues, potential absences and changes in the HSE guidance ignoring mental ill health simply isn’t an option. First Aiders for Mental Health are the go-to person in the workplace for anyone going through a mental health related issue. It is not about providing therapy or counselling support but being able to spot the signs and symptoms, having the listening and communication tools to open up a dialogue and encourage their colleague to access relevant professional support or potentially escalate a situation if they have concerns about safety.

The 1 day Working Safely course will give delegates an understanding of their Health and Safety responsibilities in the work place. Topics include working safely, how to define and identify hazards and risks and how to control them. Data Protection Refresher Training Many schools will have provided Data Protection training including GDPR training well over a year ago. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) recommends that refresher training is carried out every one to two years. Whenever there is a reportable breach, the first question that the regulator will ask is “have all your staff received training? This one and a half hour session will provide delegates with a humorous and informative refresher course which will remind school of the importance of data protection and, in particular, will include a practical session on working from home. Sessions will be available for booking at both planned sessions at our offices or as whole school on site session on a day of your choice.

NEW TRAINING COURSES Data Protection – A Practical View This full day session provides not just all the basics of Data Protection but also a much greater depth, which allows individuals to be the school lead on Data Protection. This very much a hands-on practical course with exercises so that delegates can fully appreciate the requirements of Data Protection, which includes the GDPR. Attendees will gain a good understanding, which will enable the school to work towards creating an on-going compliance culture. This course is also suitable for anyone with senior management responsibility as it is essential that the culture of compliance must stem from the top. Details of all of these courses can be found in the latest copy of The Education Space Training Brochure.
Managing a Data Protection Officer So you know you need one and you are aware that your DPO must be independent, an expert in data protection, adequately resourced, and report to the highest management level. You are also aware that the DPO operates independently and is not dismissed or penalised for performing their tasks. So how then do you manage this individual? How do you set objectives? How do you measure success? This one hour session explains the role of a Data Protection Officer and how you can provide management support.
