World Mental Health Day The Education Space

As part of our ongoing commitment to our staff’s well being and our Time to Change Pledge, The Education Space held a World Mental Health Day: Tea and Talk event. The event consisted of 5 different activities, from myth busting and quizzes to just having a chat about mental health and how it has affected us. Let us know how you marked World Mental Health Day: letstalk@theeducationspace.co.uk

Mental health problems affect one in four people in any one year. So, even if you don’t have a mental health problem, it’s likely your friend, a family member or work colleague will be affected.

You don’t need to be an expert to be a friend to someone suffering with their mental health, it’s often the everyday things, like a phone call or text, that makes a difference.

Managed IT Services for schools Jamie Charlton Sales Director Sharp Business Systems UK

Selecting the right partner In a world where technology becomes ever-integrated into our homes, schools, and lives, it’s important to ensure we remain ahead of the curve. This is difficult when the rate and pace of technological change is hard to keep track of, and even more difficult for schools - who feel the full weight of the governments tightening purse strings. With Ofsted requirements today specifying that schools should introduce children to a range and breadth of technology they may encounter in later life, it’s no longer an option to get left behind by this pace of change. But what about when our technology fails? Schools don’t have the time or resource to monitor for issues, or wait for them to be fixed once they happen. That’s why selecting the right Managed IT provider is crucial, school staff need to focus on student productivity, not failing hardware or systems. As a full Managed IT Service provider, Sharp knows that

ISSUE 16 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST

innovative hardware is an important first step, but it’s the post-installation support that makes a great provider.

Reliable support Even the most reliable technology fails sometimes. And the moment it does, everything stops - but it doesn’t have to. The most basic thing any school should consider when choosing an IT provider is how readily available they are to speak to in case something goes wrong. Find out how reachable their helpline is. Is it limited to typical working hours? What happens in an out of hours’ emergency?

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS

Sharp offers the latest tools to empower teaching and learning. Whether it’s increasing productivity with next-gen laptops, interactivity with student iPads, or server and network infrastructure setup, Sharp has the best hardware for your school.

Totally secure solutions It may also be important to check the location of the provider. If a company is based on the other side of the country, then the likelihood of a technician being able to arrive quickly if on-site support is required is slim. Consider choosing a provider based nearer to your office. At Sharp, our consultative approach can help you manage your solutions, increasing uptime and productivity. What makes Sharp’s IT support different? yy yy yy yy

24/7 help-desk service Support available remotely or onsite Intuitive live-update ticketing system Weekly preventative maintenance site visits yy Remote monitoring for fault prevention and resolution

Innovative hardware Technology has the power to transform how we learn. It puts information at our fingertips, keeping us connected and engaged. Having a reliable support is imperative, but Investing in a provider that offers the latest devices is an important first step.

All of this new tech is exciting, but previously unheard of threats and risks come with it. So, today it is more important than ever to make sure that your school is protected from hackers, online threats and viruses, as well as having a strong disaster recovery plan in place. It’s paramount that the right security standards are met and that you have regular audits, firewall updates, and everything in place to minimise threats to your school and its data. Everything we do at Sharp starts with listening. We take the time to really understand your school, your challenges, and your goals. Once we have a clear picture of where you are and where you want to be, we’ll introduce you to the technology and processes to make it happen. For anyone planning on a new setup or refreshing an existing IT environment, take the time to research potential providers thoroughly against the above criteria and create your school and classroom of the future. Achieving cost effectiveness Become a more cost effective school by achieving better VFM from your purchases. Would you like reassurance that your procurements are compliant and following good practice guidance? Do you need to produce evidence at a moment’s notice showing documentation of a well-run procurement exercise? Are you confident your buying practices cover all stages of the Procurement Lifecycle? If you prefer to manage new procurements and re-tendering exercises yourself, we offer a wide range of training sessions in order to upskill and refresh your staff to give them the confidence to manage this in-house. However, if your workload is heavy and you could benefit from having someone else take the burden from you, we offer a bespoke service where we lead the tender, produce the required documentation and ensure the school’s priorities are met. This service is offered with no upfront fee so you always stay in complete control of your costs. The charge for this full procurement support service is either a small share of any savings you make from the assignment, or an agreed fixed fee. The most valuable element of the service is that you will be working with a trusted partner in The Education Space - a school-owned company that puts the interests of the pupils and the staff we support at the heart of everything we do.

discussion on current policies and approaches.

Intended outcomes: • Teachers will develop a greater awareness of how pupils learn and how teaching should best align. • Teachers will gain a deeper understanding of the principles underpinning teaching for mastery. • Teachers will demonstrate elements of changed classroom practice and be able to design lessons that include better questioning and more opportunities for mathematical talk. As a result, school lesson planning formats and calculation policies are more likely to align coherently with teaching for mastery. • Pupils will benefit from increased opportunities to explore concepts in more depth, and develop a greater understanding of the connections in mathematics. They will be more confident in their mathematics and be able to explain their reasoning using appropriate language. Enjoyment and motivation to succeed will be seen in the classroom.

The wider context: Most teachers in primary schools do not have qualifications above GCSE Mathematics and when asked, do not consider themselves “maths specialists”. Several Maths Hubs have been supporting Specialist Knowledge for Teaching Maths Work Groups for teachers who want to improve their knowledge and understanding of mathematics and how to teach in an effective way. Evaluations from 2018- 19 provide qualitative evidence that the SKTM programmes run by hubs are having an impact in the classroom and on pupil achievement. It is important that all primary school teachers have a deep subject knowledge and are familiar with appropriate pedagogy. Significant national funding has been committed to resourcing this development with textbooks and the NCETM Professional Development Materials. This Work Group will help support effective uses of these emergent teaching for mastery resources in lesson planning. It builds upon the work of the 2017/18 and 2018/19 projects using planning guidance developed by those projects.

Trainer: Dr Celia Dunne is Assistant Maths Hub Lead at London North East Maths Hub. She is a teacher and an NCETM accredited Primary Mastery Specialist who has led professional development for a range of London schools.
