St Paul’s Academy Digital Transformation Jamie Charlton Sales Director Sharp Business Systems UK
Background St Paul’s Academy provides its 1,200 students with opportunities to develop their skills and knowledge by embracing digital transformation, and weaving connected technologies into every area of its premises. Specialising in sports and enterprise, the academy offers a wide range of subjects to prospective students, so any solution must integrate seamlessly into each of its
distinct faculties. Sharp Business Systems UK was called in to help the academy remain at the fore of engaging its students through innovation, and to keep the curriculum feeling fresh by immersing its pupils in one-ofa-kind collaborative products and solutions.
The challenge – teaching through innovation As a leading academy whose students achieve high

examination results year after year, a challenge for St Paul’s was out-of-date equipment. The academy had a high number of ageing devices, which were breaking down frequently and threatened to impact the high standard of teaching and learning. The academy also wanted to keep its brand-new purpose-built building feeling fresh, and increase student productivity by integrating modern touch screen technology into each of its 7 learning zones. Eileen Bryan, Assistant Principal at St Paul’s says: “We’ve always been strong believers in encouraging students to become more aware of technology and how it can be embedded within processes. A main challenge is ensuring that our students are computer literate and maximise on the technology available.”

their print securely from any device by using a password.
Both teachers and students needed additional print functions available to them, and to be able to pick up these more advanced jobs from any capable printer in the school. The school provides students with many educational and recreational trip opportunities, and wished to showcase and promote achievement to fellow students or visitors, but lacked the capabilities. Moreover, the academy was in desperate need of intuitive IT systems and reliable support, to ensure that their 11 critical servers were accessible to students and teachers at all times.
The solution – connected technologies to suit each space Sharp’s first solution was to
update outdated technology, with an initial focus on printers and photocopiers. Sharp proposed placing multifunction printers and light production devices in strategic locations around the academy. With advanced functionality, including duplex print, scan to email and booklet making, the new machines were more efficient, with improved reliability. Furthermore, because the school needed to be able to pick up print jobs from any device, Sharp proposed setting the school’s devices up on Equitrac. Equitrac print management software would not only give administrators complete sight of the print fleet, but also allow staff and students to send jobs to a single print queue and pick up

The strategic placement of 8 interactive BIG PAD touchscreens throughout the school’s 7 learning zones was proposed to maximise their use as a collaborative tool, keeping students engaged in lessons. As well as bringing lessons to life, the BIG PADs’ compatibility with MFPs mean that printed documents can be scanned and displayed. Likewise, on screen data can be printed, simplifying information sharing and enhancing connectivity throughout the school. 14 proposed Professional Display screens would be used to keep the academy feeling fresh throughout, and because they are specifically designed to be on 24/7 at minimal cost, they would be the perfect tool for promoting student achievement. Intuitive signage software would integrate seamlessly with the hardware to let staff easily drag and drop announcements onto the screens.

with the content. Eileen says: “The students have interacted very well with the BIG PADs, they can do different activities depending on the lesson.” Their cross-school versatility means that “in mathematics the touch screens are used to make angles more interactive, and in computer science they’re used to bring excitement to coding.” Additionally, Sharp suggested the introduction of Managed IT Services for enhanced connectivity. Office 365 migration, superfast Wi-Fi with boosters in several strategic locations, and a 24/7 remote monitoring service would ensure IT systems rarely failed, and if they did, trained technicians would be available to support from the help-desk. The result – technology and service to rely on An optimised print fleet and integrated technologies from Sharp have led to time efficiencies, streamlined processes, and an enhanced learning environment. The installation of Equitrac print management software has sped up the print process. Eileen says: “You can send a document to print and pick it up from
anywhere across the school at any time, it’s so convenient!” The software has also allowed governing staff to take back control of print costs by providing insight into who is printing, and what is being printed, making departments accountable for any waste. The Sharp devices have reduced downtime caused by breakdowns, and because Sharp carries out planned preventative maintenance visits during school holidays as part of its Managed Print Service, the machines are kept working at capacity, eliminating any disruption to students. The audio visual solutions have also revolutionised the school. Sharp BIG PADs are used by teachers to encourage whole-class collaboration by getting students up from their desks and interacting
ISSUE 18 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
Sharp’s Professional Displays are now located throughout the building and are often the first thing visitors see. Eileen says: “We can put messages up on the screens quickly, they’ve massively helped with promoting achievement and fundraising throughout the academy, they always display something for our students to see and engage with.” Furthermore, any issues that arise from St Paul’s IT equipment are quickly fixed. From the Domain Name Server to the File Server, technicians pick up problems using remote monitoring software, and work collaboratively with the academy’s IT department to resolve them. Visit by Peter Tabichi Nelson Primary School
On Friday 4th October Nelson Primary School had the great honour of hosting Peter Tabichi, the Varkey Foundation’s Global Teacher for 2019 as part of their work with the British Council Connecting Classrooms Project. Guests were greeted by the school’s newly elected house captains, and enjoyed traditional English Scones. In the assembly, the school orchestra began proceedings by playing both the National Anthem of Kenya and of Great
Britain and Northern Ireland under the direction of their music leader, Mr Dye. They were joined by The Kenyan Deputy High Commissioner, Kenyan Education Attache, the Head of the government Department for International Development, members of the British Council and two teachers from their partner school, St Joseph’s academy in Oyugis. Thanks to technology, they were also joined by their

partner school via Skype. This meant that teachers and pupils in both schools were able to hear Peter Tabichi as he talked about his award, how he had won it and what the future holds. There were some top tips for teachers and pupils too. Peter and the guests spent some time looking around the school and classes. The children were sharing their work on SDG13, climate action. The dignitries all enjoyed their visit.

Curwen Pupils Attend Wildlife Photographer of the Year Event at Number Ten Downing Street Curwen Primary School Children from Curwen Primary School in Plaistow visited Number 10 Downing Street on Wednesday 16th October to attend a special preview of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition. The children were among a group of only 20 children invited to attend the event, alongside the judges of the prestigious awards, winning photographers and scientific and conservation leaders. The exhibition included the winning images from its fifty-fifth Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition. Wildlife Photographer of the Year is a global competition. This year it attracted over 48,000 entrants from 100 countries, while last year’s exhibition was shown at 48 venues worldwide and was visited by 1.7 million people. The winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition will be revealed on Tuesday 15th October at
a ceremony at the Natural History Museum, London, which owns, produces and exhibits the international competition. Visitors will be able to see all the 100 awarded images in lightbox displays at the Natural History Museum from Friday 18th October. The Curwen pupils were selected to attend the special event due to their reputation for what Ryan Maskell, of the Prime Minister’s Office,

described as, “a fantastic commitment to fieldwork and the local environment”. He went on to describe the children as excellent ambassadors for the school: “We just wanted to say what an absolute delight it was having the children and staff from Curwen School attend Number 10 today. The children were very engaged with all the exhibits and had lots of questions for the staff. They have definitely made the school proud!”

Tower Hamlets School Renovates Community Centre To Expand Nursery Manorfield Primary School
and social needs amongst young children in the area. The new provision offers 80 new places for 2-3 year olds (15 hours per child, per week) in addition to an expansion of its established 3-4 year old nursery, which will now offer 90 full-time places (30 hours per child, per week free of charge to parents), setting the school apart from many others in the area.
Manorfield Primary has now opened its new nursery provision for 2-to-3 year-olds, marking the renovation of a local community centre and a significant expansion for the school. The school, rated ‘Outstanding’ after its last Ofsted visit, has expanded its nursery provision with the aim of improving upon these levels as well as tackling the rising level of special educational, disability
Manorfield Headteacher Paul Jackson proposed a renovation of the Teviot Community Centre, which stands opposite the school, in order to expand Manorfield’s current nursery provision. ‘We made a firm commitment to quality early years education, recognising that it lays the foundations for excellent futures for these children’, Mr Jackson stated, ‘and we’re immensely proud to have been able to maintain that commitment and bring it

to fruition’. The new nursery building for 3-4 year olds was completed earlier this year, alongside a brand new outdoor learning area within the school grounds. Mr Jackson explained the rationale behind the project, describing how ‘[Manorfield] wants the most disadvantaged children to be able to access a quality 2–3 year old nursery: this helps lay a strong foundation for our 3–4 year old provision, meaning those children won’t be having to catch up: they’ll be in the best possible place to enjoy and benefit from their education right from the start’. ‘The opening is the culmination of a wonderful set of collaborations and a great deal of effort,’ Mr Jackson commented. ‘Manorfield is extremely proud and excited to be pushing boundaries and proving that quality education can be provided, sometimes against the odds, for this fantastic community.’
