Termly Briefings for Headteachers and School Business Leaders The Education Space
This half term saw the first of our new termly briefings for Headteachers and School Business Leaders. Both events were very well attended by schools from across the borough and the feedback was excellent. The sessions are designed to provide up-to-date information on all things Newham, NPW and education. These events focused on employment law with updates provided by Winckworth Sherwood, the potential effects of Brexit on schools, the Apprenticeship Levy, The Education Space’s new client portal, procurement and much more. The next briefing sessions will be on the 12th February for Headteachers and the 13th February for SBLs. If you are interested in attending next term’s sessions or have any ideas for agenda items then please get in touch at: LetsTalk@theeducationspace.co.uk

Recruitment Agencies Preferred Suppliers The Education Space
In response to the key issues raised by our schools, regarding the cost of using recruitment agencies and the variable quality of agency staff, The Education Space have undertaken an exercise to provide our clients with a preferred supplier list from a broad selection of high quality suppliers at competitive prices. We requested Information from 22 agencies about their fees; how they monitor the quality of teachers; safer recruitment procedures etc. Nine of the agencies provided enough information to be considered. We then reviewed responses and selected the 3 agencies that best met the requirements as set out from our discussions with our clients for the preferred supplier list. All agencies are Recruitment and Employment Confederation members and DfE Crown Commercial Service suppliers, therefore they have also been subjected to rigorous quality assurance checks.
The agencies selected offer specialisms within the following categories, however, each agency offers a range of other services. Hays - senior leaders and executive appointments Randstad Education – support staff (including academic, administrative and site staff). Strategy – teaching staff (daily, long term and short term supply).
ISSUE 20 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
All three Agencies have also confirmed that should Newham schools meet the relevant volume thresholds then further discounts could be applied to the pre-agreed rates. Further information on this will be provided through the Teacher Recruitment Newsletter sent by Sarah Bartley. If you have any questions in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us at LetsTalk@ theeducationspace.co.uk

Case Study: St Cyres Comprehensive School Jamie Charlton Sales Director Sharp Business Systems UK
bespoke requirements of each department in the school. The reprographics area needed speed, whilst machines in centralised areas had to be robust and multi-purpose, and classrooms required compact, quiet, spacesaving devices.
Background Based around 5 miles away from Cardiff in South Wales, St Cyres Comprehensive High School has revolutionised its processes with Sharp’s proactive managed print service, and PaperCut for Education. With a view to focus all of their efforts on teaching, school staff wanted an approachable, friendly, and pre-emptive team to remove the hassle of managing their school technology, so Sharp was called in.
The challenge – no managed services. A major issue for St Cyres was the unique,
ISSUE 20 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
The drastically different needs also meant that print volume and spend was difficult to track and budget for. With no sight of the print habits of each department, and an evergrowing amount of waste, something had to be done. A constant additional problem for the school was ensuring that the very latest technology was being used in classrooms. The pace at which technology is improving and changing means that newer, better tools for teaching are continually being developed, but the busy school could not dedicate any time to keeping on top of the latest tech trends.
The solution – considering departmental needs with managed print services. The first solution was to make sure that each department had the functionality
4
THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - INSIGHTS
required by providing the best tools for the job. High speed printers were chosen for the reprographics department to try and limit the amount of time students spent printing, as this could be centralised. Multifunction print devices were proposed for communal zones, like corridors and the library, because of their robust nature, and quiet, compact desktop printers were chosen for classrooms. The second part of this solution was to have the entire fleet managed by Sharp. By signing up on Sharp’s managed print service, St Cyres would remove the headache of administrating the different machines, including their varying parts, and replacement toner cartridges. The final step was to drastically reduce the amount of waste coming out of the school. PaperCut was selected as the perfect accompaniment to the chosen machines. The software, specifically designed for schools, would allow staff to restrict the amount of prints done, or even prevent irresponsible students from printing altogether.
“Our partnership with St Cyres has always been special. Our main goal was to provide one complete solution that was suitable for everyone at the school, so instead of causing problems by just replacing their old machines, we took the necessary time to ensure the right machines were being installed in the right places based on what they were going to be used for.”
The result – massive savings with PaperCut. After minimal disruption from an installation that took just two days, St Cyres was immediately met with massive savings of both time and money. The right machines carefully identified for the right places, combined with the visibility provided by PaperCut, has reduced waste paper and renovated processes ten-fold. Sharp’s comprehensive managed print service has only proved to enhance these benefits further. Periodic preventative maintenance measures to thwart break downs, Sharp’s OneStop automated toner software, and being able to collect prints securely have all minimised the time staff and students are out of the classroom, maximising learning time.
“Sharp have invested a lot of time with the school, our old supplier didn’t understand our needs, they didn’t know where we were going, but Sharp were with us every step of the way. The preventative maintenance has saved us so much time, we don’t even have to order toner cartridges, they come through the post before we need them. It’s the personal touch, I find that very important.” - Nicola Rees, Director of School Resources, St Cyres Comprehensive High School.

ANNUAL GOVERNORS’ AND TRUSTEES’ CONFERENCE Delivering the best outcomes for children during a time of financial challenge Many schools are feeling the impact of the funding squeeze and some to the degree that may impact the quality of education. A reduction in per pupil income, low birth rates, combined with limited housing in some areas, has led to an immediate impact on some primary schools currently struggling to fill their school places. A growing number of schools in all phases are in deficit and others are depleting their reserves. Savings can be achieved through targeted use of scarce resources, strategic procurement, school-to-school support, effective partnerships, accessing grants and awareness of income-generating opportunities. We warmly invite you to join us for a thought-provoking day, opened by our key note speaker Steve Barker, a specialist in the field of Education Finance, to explore together - through a range of workshops - practical solutions to support schools in delivering the best outcomes for children during this time of financial challenge.
