COVID-19: Advice for Schools The Education Space
What we can do now As the COVID-19 outbreak is officially classified as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation, we thought it would be prudent to share some sage advice from people in the know. Please watch the short film clips in the links below as these have been issued by the Department of Health and Social Care and approved by DfE. How to wash your hands properly: Wash your hands more often for 20 seconds with soap and hot water. Watch this short NHS film for guidance:
Public Health England recommends that in addition to handwashing before eating, and after coughing and sneezing, everyone should also wash hands after using toilets and travelling on public transport.
The importance of hygiene Personal hygiene is the most important way we can tackle COVID-19, especially washing hands more; and the ‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’ strategy for those with coughs and sneezes. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/ coronavirus-covid-19information-for-the-public

Planning Ahead You may be aware that the Republic of Ireland has made the decision to close all schools effective from 12th to 29th March 2020. There is a likelihood that similar action may be taken by the UK government in response to containing COVID-19. It would be prudent at this point to consider school operations under a national directive of closure. As remote working may increase during this period, data security awareness is highly crucial for staff working from home. You may find the following guidance useful: Covid-19 and Remote Working Working from Home Video Training Aid Many schools have Google domains and will be able to use Google Classroom to assign work. This relies on children having access to a device that is internet enabled with access to G-Suite. Schools may also consider manual workarounds such as home learning packs. You may find the following guidance useful: Google Classroom - How to upload learning Google Classroom - Parents Help Sheet
Google has advised that additional features and resources have been made available on G-Suite for Education. As many educational institutions are facing or planning for closures due to COVID-19, the Google for Education team is providing product solutions, training and resources to help them stay connected. Schools now have free access to advanced features in Hangouts Meet and to resources using G Suite for distance learning on the Teacher Center, details below. You can learn more on the Google for Education blog and follow us on @TheEduSpace for more updates.

Advanced Hangouts Meet features Google is making advanced features in Hangouts Meet available to schools around the globe using G Suite for Education, so that educators can continue connecting with students and facilitating remote learning. This will include the ability to record meetings, livestream up to 100k people and add 250 people to a Hangout. These features will be available at no additional cost to all G Suite for Education customers until July 1, 2020. Google is expediting approvals in the most highly impacted markets, and providing ways for sales team members to request exceptions.
Training and resources As educators and administrators set up contingency plans and consider making classrooms fully virtual, we’re here to help. We have seen educational leaders reaching out to one another, sharing ideas and providing support through Google Educator Groups, Certified Innovators and Trainers, and other social networks, including Twitter and Facebook. Check out this webinar on distance learning strategies, find resources in the Teacher Center, and share ways you support remote learners. For educators preparing for potential school closures—or currently facing them—Google for Education tools can help them navigate the challenges of distance learning. We’re committed to

helping students and their teachers continue learning outside of school. Check out tips on the Google for Education blog for inspiration and ideas, and submit your own ideas for other educators.
Sending Chromebooks home for distance learning School admins can quickly and securely prepare their school’s Chromebooks to go home with students. Chromebooks are remotely managed through the Google Admin console, making it simple for schools and IT administrators to deploy and manage thousands of devices. For example, Admins can restrict device access to managed student accounts or set “Off Hours” when students can sign in with their personal accounts. They may also use URL blacklists to set content restrictions and ensure that students are held to the same responsible-use policies off-campus as they are inside their classrooms. For more information, please see our Help Center article on how to prepare Chromebooks for e-learning days at home.
Antivirus Software Staff members should all ensure that they have antivirus software at home to protect their personal computers and avoid the risk of bringing viruses into the school. All staff who work in a school with an LGfL subscription are entitled to free Sophos Antivirus software for their home computers.

The fifth Brunch & Discuss was held on the 12th March 2020 and even the threat of COVID-19 could not keep the hordes away from the fantastic presenters and the delicious brunch on offer. The media is currently full of Coronavirus reports which one wouldn’t normally link with Data Protection. However, the potential for staff members to be working from home, presents new risks which may not have previously been considered by schools. The implications of this were discussed at some length and staff were provided with a checklist to give staff so that they can consider their own working environment without the need to study school policies and procedures.
Click here for you copy of the checklist Click here for a short training aid about the potential dangers of working from home. As always, the latest data protection news was covered under our “Have I got DPO News for You” section, reviewing some interesting developments
ISSUE 34 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
Our Curriculum Support Advisor, Sophia, spoke about teaching children the value and risks of data both in and out of school including on social media and gaming platforms. Data protection is for everyone, not just for grown ups, and teaching children to be vigilant with their personal information helps to not only safeguard them but also to drive compliance right through the school. We had two schools discuss their experience with Subject Access Requests (SAR); Doreen from LAE gave an enlightening talk about dealing with a very difficult SAR and Julie from Gallions helped us

to reflect on a side of SARs we perhaps hadn’t yet considered - the psychological and mental toll of processing them. As ever it was great to see so many of you there and have the chance to network with colleagues, although next time we will need to put out some extra tables! The next Brunch & Discuss is on 18th June from 8:30am to 11am. You can book a place by visiting our client portal or contact us on DPO@ theeducationspace.co.uk Training is one of the first things the ICO asks about when looking into potential breaches of
the GDPR, and simply training your staff once and forgetting it doesn’t meet the ICO’s recommendations. All staff should receive refresher training once every 18-24 months. As we approach the 2nd anniversary of the introduction of GDPR, now is the time to book your sessions. Our wonderful Data Compliance Team are regularly delivering whole school training sessions to ensure you remain compliant. Just because the subject appears dry and boring doesn’t mean the training has to be; we regularly receive fantastic feedback about our tailored Data Compliance Training.
The Headteacher at Elmhurst Primary School had this to say about the training:
“The GDPR refresher training was delivered in an engaging manner by the two trainers, who even injected humour and a great deal of relevancy into what could otherwise have been boring subject matter. The resources were well chosen and the presentation was pertinent and in tune with our overall work on creating a robust safeguarding culture. Thank you to The Education Space.”

Central Park’s Reading Bus Central Park Primary School
On the 7th February, Central Park Primary School launched their ‘READING BUS’ to encourage reading during playtimes. This is one of the first of its kind in Newham with other schools now looking to replicate the idea in their playgrounds. Darren Williams, the Executive Head for CPD Federation says, “The more we read, the more we understand the world around us. At Central Park, prompting the love of reading is the first step on the journey to excelling. Our reading bus is part of that journey.” The launch was attended by Cllr Julianne Marriott who is the lead member for education along with parents and the school’s former PTA.
The reading bus will be a permanent fixture in the school. The bus was predominantly paid for out of the school budget with about 20% funded by the school’s former PTA (in the above picture). The bus was bought from a vehicle supplier in Horsham, East

Sussex. Up until a few weeks before it was delivered to the school, the bus was a working school bus ferrying school children around! The bus has over a thousand books placed all around inside. Some of the books were purchased from the

famous Newham Book Shop and others from the local high street. The books range from Reception to Year 6 and cover a range of curriculum-related topics, as well as other topics that would help children develop their reading, speaking and writing skills. There is a wide range of fiction as well as non-fiction books available to the young readers. The parents were delighted to see the launch of the reading bus and queued up outside the playground to get a chance to see the inside of it. Darren Williams addressed the crowd along with other members of staff, explaining his vision behind introducing reading during class time as well as outside of it. He said, “I wanted to explore a different learning environment for our children. The bus was inspired having seen similar in other schools. The focus was always going to

be reading, linked in with school priorities. Having a library that can be accessed throughout the day - during teaching time and free time - means children have exposure to books all day long. Our drive is for children to love books and enjoy reading; the chance to read in an unusual space is part of this drive.” The bus was inaugurated by Darren Williams along with
ISSUE 34 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST
Emaan in Year 6 and Ali in Year 4. The inside of the bus had been refurbished and customized for use as a library. It is temperature controlled and has had a seating area placed on the top deck with books within arms distance wherever you go. It is a calm and relaxing environment and a delight for children at Central Park Primary School, who cannot stop talking about it.
Although the bus has been officially launched and is being used currently, the school intends to invest in it further and make it an even better outside of classroom reading environment. The school intends to bring to its pupils more and more of such innovative additions that will enable them to become more confident, creative and see the world from different perspectives in the years to come.
