St Luke’s Primary and Nursery School is an Eco Schools Champion St Luke’s Primary & Nursery School
As an Eco School, matters of ecology and sustainability run through our curriculum and are represented in all subject areas, over the last few months we have had visitors from the London Beekeepers association, planted bee friendly plants, planted and then harvested and eaten our own crop of fruit and veg, made recycled planters from old doors from the school, made minibeast hotels and looked at our microhabitats, planted trees around the back of the school and made use of our Eco garden for other lessons such as RE and drama.
Alongside that we take part in regular bikeability training each year to encourage the use of more sustainable forms of transport as well as being the current ‘Street Tag’ champions of Newham (2 times in a row!) Channel 5 news came to visit us to see what we were doing and how we already had ecology and sustainability as part of our curriculum, Click the image below to watch the Channel 5 News video.
We pride ourselves one being an Eco School and have 6 ‘Green Flags’ as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s eco school programme and the Eco committee is just one of the school committees alongside the Health and Wellbeing and Justice committee that our children can apply to be part of to shape our school.

Newham City Farm Competition Winners We are very excited to announce the two winning entries to our schools’ Christmas card competition on behalf of the SNCF campaign. We will also be including this information on our website: www.savenewhamcityfarm.com Primary: Curwen Primary School Secondary: Education Links Thanks so much to all of those schools and pupils who submitted entries. There were so, so many really lovely entries and the choice was extremely tough. We loved how some schools used this project to give the children a real purpose for writing/designing and linked it to the science, humanities, literacy, art and RE curriculum too because a farm is relevant to many curriculum areas and community issues. The children had some very heartfelt and valid messages about the importance of a city farm for the community and we will start to share those, without their names of course, on the website and social media. Again, thanks so much to staff for taking the time in your busy schedules
to engage with this competition and to champion this cause. It is so important that we get this local facility reinstated for families and the community in general but particularly as a low-cost, low-risk local venue for educational visits relating to diverse curriculum areas. Our children, young people and people with SEND deserve easy access to a place like this locally. We are researching and building a proposal for a reimagined farm as the Council has invited us to do and have so many ideas including from inspirational visits to other City Farms. We’d be very interested to hear views from you, your EVC and specific subject leaders about what sorts of provision it would be useful and practical for a local City Farm to provide. What would attract your school to use such a resource? Please do not hesitate to contact us. Please do keep sharing information about the campaign in newsletters etc if you can and keep encouraging your staff and families to follow the campaign on the website, via social media and to sign and share our petition widely in Newham particularly.
