Little Ilford says Farewell to Ian Wilson Simon Mares Chair of Governors Little Ilford School

Probably the best way to sum up Ian Wilson’s years at Little Ilford is to look at the manner of his arrival - and the manner of his departure. I have interviewed more teachers than I can count for headships in Newham. But out of those many interviews and activities there is one moment that stands out above all the rest. It was when we were looking for a successor to our two previous headteachers who had led Little Ilford during the journey from Special Measures to Outstanding - the incomparable and formidable Pam Belmour and the force of nature that is Yvonne Powell. Hard acts to follow, but we knew we had found our man when we watched Ian give an assembly as part of the selection process. We had asked the candidates to talk around the school’s diversity policy. Ian’s presentation was superb, using his own family history - including refugees - to bring out the themes he

ISSUE 55 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST

wanted to get across to the pupils. It combined compassion, intelligence, rigour, and a driving commitment to get the best out of everyone. It was the moral purpose we were looking for and it confirmed what we had observed in the rest of the process. I swear that the number of staff lining the walls of the hall more than doubled during his assembly as word spread through the school that something very special was happening.

Ian is retiring at the end of this term. He could have waited until September 30 to hand in his notice. But being Ian, caring for the institution, thinking of others, and being methodical, forwardthinking, and well-organised he told us well before the end of the summer term. That meant we had time to plan the selection process carefully and give ourselves the chance to run it more than once if necessary - and we did! Ian’s foresight meant that our new head, Andrew Finn, can take over smoothly without an interregnum. Ian leaves behind a proud record - he’s built an entirely new school for a start (negotiating a way through the sharp end of the PSBP process is no easy task); he’s recruited superbly for the school, building a formidable team of high quality leaders and practitioners and he’s led from the front - literally on

most days as he is to be found outside the school gates in his hi viz jacket making sure the end of the school day goes smoothly. Before his time at Little Ilford Ian was in senior leadership roles at two other Newham schools - Plashet and St Bonaventure’s - where he worked with two formidable school leaders, Bushra Nasir and Michael Wilshaw, but he is very much his own man and put his stamp on Little Ilford during his almost nine years as headteacher. His determination to do the best for our pupils and staff, his openness and honesty as well as his sheer hard work have served us well. And astonishingly he’s found the time away from school to become a published composer and writer - activities he intends to develop in his retirement. Knowing Ian, he’ll succeed.

MIS Team Corner

Important SIMS Contract News There is a proposal by ESS to move schools to a 3 year SIMS agreement from the 2022/23 financial year. ESS have stated that this change is necessary to allow them to invest significantly in cloudbased services to existing SIMS customers and they feel 3-year terms are common amongst alternative providers. We understand that schools will be given the option of using new cloudbased SIMS modules alongside their existing on-premise SIMS/FMS system. We are aware that a number of SIMS competitors are contacting schools about this change. Based on recent advice from solicitors, the move looks unlikely to be an issue from a procurement law perspective for single-site schools and smaller MATs, as the £189k annual contract value procurement threshold wouldn’t usually be triggered. However, there is a possibility that the move to a 3-year contract term could be challenged by alternative MIS software providers or collective school action under Competition Law which may result in schools and academies being granted more time to make a decision. What we do know for sure, is that switching MIS software is a significant decision for schools and shouldn’t be made lightly.

Dear AUA, I’m interested in becoming a school governor at my child’s school. How can I find out about this?

Dear AUA, I am getting a Borland database error message when attempting to access the Accounts Receivable module in FMS; what would you recommend?

Hi Ahmed, Becoming a school governor is very rewarding. You would be involved in making strategic decisions about your school’s policies and plans. Just remember that, as a governor, you would be focussing on the education of all children at the school, and not just that of your own child. Governing Boards include different stakeholders, and are appointed in different ways. Parent governors are elected by other parents in an election. You should contact your headteacher to ask if there is a vacancy on the board, and let them know you are interested.

Hi Anna, This issue is often linked to the default printer. Check that you have a default printer setup on your desktop. If you have, try changing it from the current default to something else then change it back again. If this doesn’t resolve the issue, please call our helpdesk.

Dear AUA, Our school has a current vacancy which we urgently need to advertise. Can you help? Hi Rukshana, We have a recruitment service that can cover all your advertising needs. You can send over your job description and draft advertisement anytime to adverts@theeducationspace.co.uk and it will be posted live on Jobs Go Public within 48 hours. If you submit it by midday on Wednesday, it will also appear in our newsletter on Friday of the same week.
