Putting the Merry in a Very Merry Christmas The festive season is one most people long for; Christmas parties, spending time with friends, family, and loved ones, time off work, the smell of the Christmas tree sitting in the corner, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, and streets lined with festive lights (just don’t tell Greta - I’m not sure how environmentally friendly that is). The truth is, however, it can be one of the most stressful times of the year. Here are a few tips to help you reduce the stress and get the most enjoyment out of your festive period.
1. Set expectations Christmas can be financially challenging at the best of times, let alone during a global pandemic, so be realistic with family and friends. Agree who you are buying for and set a budget, as much as we would like to buy the best gifts for everyone we know it isn’t possible. Spending time with friends and family is far more important than getting them that gift that puts you in a hole when the credit card bill hits in January.
2. Share the burden Write a list of jobs that you would like to do, split that list into jobs that you need to do, jobs you should do and jobs that would be nice to do (no one will care if you didn’t manage to turn those napkins into little swans, they might however care if you forget to cook the turkey). Take the list and share the jobs out, many hands make light work.

3. Go for a walk Getting outside in the fresh air can have huge positive effects on your mental health, so make time to walk the dog or take a stroll in the park. Meeting up with family with a clear head from your walk will help to ensure you can deal with Grandad’s slightly inappropriate comments with wit and charm rather than anger and frustration.
4. Keep things in perspective Remember things are never quite as bad as they seem. Set yourself a scale from 1-100 with 100 being the worst possible thing that could happen. Then when you start to feel anxious or stressed, think about the scale of how bad the situation really is (burning the brussel sprouts that no one eats anyway doesn’t deserve any reaction above a 1!).
5. HAVE FUN!!!! Remember that Christmas is also your chance to relax and enjoy yourself. You may be the one cooking or doing the shopping but that doesn’t mean you don’t also get the chance to have some fun, so get your artistic hat on and draw for your life in pictionary or get your mime skills up to scratch ready for charades.
From all at The Education Space, we wish you a fun and restful festive break and a happy new year.

AN UPDATE FROM HR As we approach the end of term there are a couple of final things to consider before you take a very well earned break. Staff returning from Christmas holidays abroad You should remind your staff that they are expected to report to work on the first day back of term and that they should plan days of isolation as part of their holiday period. A frequent question that arises for the HR team is what action can the school take if a staff member is unable to return to work following a holiday abroad? There will be a number of considerations that need to be thought through before making any decisions. One such example would be if the individual booked their holiday before the rules had changed, which would have allowed them to report to work on the expected date. Schools are asked to show some discretion and if possible consider alternative working arrangements (e.g. working from home or granting special leave). If you have any questions or would like some advice on this matter please do not hesitate to contact our HR team on 0208 249 6900 Option 3 then 1 then 2. Vaccination, Self-Isolation and pay Staff who are fully vaccinated and identified as a contact of someone with COVID-19 have to take a lateral flow test for 7 days and continue to attend their setting as normal, unless they have a positive test result. For staff that are not fully vaccinated, they would need to self-isolate. All periods of self-isolation are on full pay. • •

Pensions (auto re-enrolment) As you will be aware it is the responsibility of all employers to provide a workplace pension. The employee does have the right to request removal from the Pension scheme should they wish to. However, the employer’s responsibility does not end there. Every three years all employers must register staff who have left the pension scheme

back into the scheme. This is called re-enrolment and is a statutory responsibility. The specific guidance on this is from the Pensions Act 2008. Any staff member who opts out or stops making payments will be automatically enrolled back into the Pension Scheme at a later date. This will normally be every three years, although in some special circumstances it will be earlier. The Education Space is now in the re-enrolment phase and our 6-month window to conduct the re-enrolment exercise is between October 2021 through to 31st March 2022. To avoid the Christmas period, we have chosen February 2022 payroll to undertake the exercise of re-enrolling staff that have opted out of pensions back into the pension scheme. Identified staff who meet the criteria will automatically be enrolled into the pensions scheme in the February 2022 payroll. Staff who opted out within 12 months of the re-enrolment date will not be auto reenrolled into the scheme. All staff that are to be auto enrolled will be contacted in due course. If you do not use The Education Space for your payroll provision, we suggest you contact your provider to ascertain when your re-enrollment will be required so that you can provide plenty of notice to your staff that may be affected. Support for staff including head teachers Employers have a duty of care to their employees, which includes mental health. Schools already have mechanisms to support staff wellbeing and these will be particularly important in the current climate. Information about the extra mental health support for pupils and teachers can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/extra-mental-health-support-for-pupils- andteachers Maintaining relationships with people you trust is important for your mental wellbeing. If you can’t meet in person, think about how you can stay in touch with friends and family via telephone, video calls or social media instead – whether it’s people you normally see often or connecting with old friends. The NHS Volunteer Responders can also provide a free telephone ‘check in and chat’ if you are feeling isolated. Call 0808 196 3646 to register for this service. Further support is also available from Education Support that provide a free helpline for school staff and targeted support for mental health and wellbeing. https://www.educationsupport.org.uk

Dear AUA, Should schools put their privacy notices on the schools website? Hi Shanaz, the rules state that individuals should be provided with privacy information when data is collected from them and if the information is being supplied from a source other than the individual, a privacy notice must be supplied within a reasonable time frame and at least within one month of obtaining the data. The easiest way to ensure that individuals are provided with an up to date privacy notice is to signpost them to the website or provide a link to the document. There is no requirement to provide a paper copy. As privacy notices should be reviewed and updated regularly, the easiest way to ensure all data subjects have access to a copy is via the website.
Dear AUA, A member of staff at our school has been invited to attend jury service. How is their pay calculated? Hi Jenny, the employee will be sent an invitation letter from the courts plus a ‘’certificate for loss of earnings’’ form to state what their daily rate is. Your payroll provider should complete this and the employee will need to give it to the court receptionist on their first day of jury duty. Upon the completion of jury duty, the court pays the employee directly and issues them with a remittance which should be given to your SBM. This must be uploaded alongside the next reporting pack with the dates of absence entered on the ‘’other absence tab’’ of the pack. Then payroll will deduct what the courts paid the employee from their usual salary.
Dear AUA, I am finding it difficult to produce all the data needed for the daily DfE Education Setting Status Report from SIMS. Is there any easy way to get the COVID-related attendance data I need? Hi Muhammad, The Education Space has produced a SIMS report which can be run each day to give all the required pupil data in a format that is consistent with the latest DfE form. Please get in touch with The Education Space to request a copy for your school.

Save Newham City Farm Christmas Card Competition A big thank you to all of the schools who entered the Save Newham City Farm Christmas Card Competition. Congratulations to Curwen Primary School and Education Links for their winning entries. Anna Babini, Education Links, was delighted with the news that their pupils had won 1st prize and said “It was a good way for the kids to explore with simple graphic design, we linked it to the current Art topic (Habitat) and to the work of graphic designer Tom Eckersley”. The judges were extremely impressed the high level of creativity shown in the designs and the heartfelt messages about saving the farm along with some great campaign slogans, which included: • Baaaa! Save Us • Don’t Harm The Farm! • Cows not Cuts! • Farms not Flats! London Borough of Newham has now launched its public consultation on the future plans for the Newham City Farm site as part of its Beckton Parks Masterplan. If you would like to comment about developments in Beckton Parks, including reopening of the Newham City Farm site, which provided a great local educational visits venue for Newham schools, please complete this short council survey: https://newhamco-create.co.uk/en/projects/becktonparksmasterplan?utm_source=share_project
