Little Ilford School Welcomes New Headteacher Little Ilford School

Andrew Finn joined the Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ secondary school in Newham, Little Ilford School, in January, having recently served as Principal of an international school in Hong Kong. Mr Finn has been teaching for 20 years and started his career at Brampton Manor Academy, where over the course of 12 years he became Assistant Principal and also worked at Langdon Academy for a term as part of the Brampton Manor Trust. Mr Finn said Little Ilford School’s values and vision really appealed to him: “I am very excited to be back in Newham and feel honoured to be joining the excellent staff at Little Ilford School to ensure we continue to deliver excellence for our students. Ilford School is a unique place with a close community and strong values. For students around the world the past few years have been especially challenging so I’m excited to help our students reconnect and exceed their goals this year. Our students are ambitious and motivated and I want to ensure they are given every opportunity to fulfil their potential and grow with us.” Mr Finn added: “I think Courage, Commitment and Compassion are very strong values for students to take away into their lives and I want to make sure we demonstrate them daily.” The selection panel that appointed Mr Finn was headed up by Little Ilford’s Chair of Governors Simon Mares: “Little Ilford is a special school that needs a special Headteacher, and we are convinced that in Andrew we have chosen the right person. We had a high-quality field of candidates to choose from but felt that Andrew’s

combination of rigour and empathy gave us the person we need to build on the achievements of Ian Wilson, Yvonne Powell and Pam Belmour who have led the school over the last thirty years. He has a strong record of teaching both in Newham and abroad which impressed the panel.” Little Ilford School has many links within the Newham Community, and Mr Finn plans to build on those partnerships for the future: “The links with the wider community that we have are important to give the students exposure to different careers and different opportunities. These partnerships offer experiences beyond the traditional curriculum that are vital to nurturing talent and providing fresh challenges to help our students grow.” Little Ilford School is currently undergoing an expansion of its classrooms and facilities and we are pleased to announce that all are on track for our next academic year.

Little Ilford English Department Commended for PTI Award Little Ilford School

The education charity, The PTI, has commended the English Department at Little Ilford School for the Bernice McCabe Award at a ceremony on Tuesday 15th March at Mercers’ Hall in London. Bernice McCabe OBE, who passed away in February 2019, was the founding Co-Director of the PTI and believed in the transformative power of inspiring subject teaching. The Award celebrates excellence in subject leadership in schools, recognising departments that put quality subject teaching at the heart of the classroom. A £5,000 prize and trophy is awarded annually to an exceptional department which demonstrates the ethos and values of The PTI through their work within and beyond the curriculum. Little Ilford School’s English Department has been commended for its vision to develop

lessons that ensured layers of depth and challenge embedded throughout Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3. Primary and secondary school leaders worked collaboratively to ensure a smoother transition period between KS2 and KS3. Teachers are able to observe students’ ability in primary school, moderate student work ahead of the Autumn term, enabling secondary teachers to see the high expectations children are held to, and match their lessons accordingly. As a result, children have been able to bridge knowledge gaps, develop their skills, and be more confident moving into secondary school. Amandip Kandola, Lead Practitioner, English Department, said: “Thank you very much for commending the English Department for the Bernice McCabe Award. It was wonderful being nominated and gave me an opportunity to reflect on the excellent cross-

phase partnerships that have been built over the past few years in our school community.” Carolyn Roberts, Co-Director, The PTI, said: “The PTI is delighted to announce the English Department at Little Ilford School as commended for the respected Bernice McCabe Award. Schools up and down the country have tirelessly supported their students during the pandemic in making sure they have received the highest standard of subject teaching from beginning to end. Through the legacy of Bernice McCabe and her Award, we can shine a light on teachers and departments who continually go above and beyond for their students.” Professor Steve Munby CBE, Chair of the judges, said: “Year upon year, the standard of leadership in schools continues to impress, having really been put to the test with the pandemic last year. Every Department Head nominated for this Award has been going the extra mile to inspire and widen students’ subject knowledge both within and outside

the classroom, and the impact on pupils’ engagement is magnificent. It’s rewarding and uplifting to be chairing the Bernice McCabe Award panel, and every school deserves to be spotlighted for their achievements.” The trophy awarded to the winner was designed by award-winning designer, Sophie Conran, and will be passed onto future winners annually. The prize money is used to advance the values of The PTI within the winner’s school, fund travel to visit other schools and disseminate the work which has been recognised by the Award.

An exceptional school: Lister Community School is a large 11-16 Academy at the heart of its community and part of the Newham Community School Trust. Our vision is to provide a world class international education for young people in Newham. We believe our young people have the right to the same quality of teaching and range of opportunities as at any school in the country, and our ethos is one of continuous improvement, with a focus on strong partnerships and staff development. Over the last ten years we have significantly raised academic standards and are now the school of choice for our local community. In our December 2018 Ofsted the inspectors found that the school has maintained the good quality of education and ‘made strong progress in many aspects of the school’s provision‘ since our last inspection in September 2013. Our many strengths are highlighted, including how students are ‘courteous and articulate’ and ‘say they enjoy school and value the wide range of opportunities they are given’. We are very proud that the report recognises our high aspirations, the hard work and good behaviour of our students, and the dedication and commitment of our staff. Our Library is a central part of the school. One of our core school priorities is that every child should reach his or her chronological reading age. We have regular DEAR sessions and every child in Year 7, 8 and 9 has a reading lesson once a fortnight. Tutor time is devoted to reading twice a week. The Library is a haven and place of learning at the heart of Lister, and was singled out by OFSTED for positive comment. This post is to enable the Library to continue and extend its work with students in the Upper School. Lister is embarking on an exciting stage of developing its support services for the school and we are seeking a dynamic, professional and high quality individual to join us in our aim for excellence in all areas. The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. This appointment will be conditional on successful pre-employment and enhanced DBS checks. We would ideally like to fill this post as soon as possible – subject to completion of recruitment checks. We are seeking to appoint a skilled, enthusiastic, dynamic and energetic individual, committed to ensuring that all students read for pleasure and achieve high academic standards. The successful applicant needs to be flexible, a good team worker, able to take responsibility and have a keen eye for detail. An interest in reading and education is essential, but previous experience in a school library is not a requirement. The successful applicant will be educated to degree level and will have a good all round education. If you think you have the potential to work as an outstanding part time Deputy Librarian then an application form can be downloaded directly from the TES website or our school’s website at: http://www.lister.newham.sch.uk/vacancies/ Completed applications must be returned by email to: jobs@lister.newham.sch.uk
