Newham Governors’ and Trustees’ Annual Conference Sarah Beaumont, Head of Governance The Education Space
The theme of this year’s Newham Governors’ and Trustees’ Annual Conference: Governor Effectiveness: Inclusive and Nurturing Schools seemed extremely well-timed. Against the national context of rising mental health and anxiety needs in schools, increasing complex special educational needs, increasing primary pupil exclusions and the surfacing of informal exclusions, the need to explore and understand how best to support pupils has never been more key. The conference, held on Saturday 7 May 2022 at Elmhurst Primary School, was opened by Cllr Sarah Ruiz, Cabinet member, Education and Children Social Care, who sincerely thanked Governors and Trustees for their remarkable and exceptional governance of schools, not least throughout the period of the pandemic. She paid tribute to how Governors and Trustees

provided so many of Newham’s children and young people with a wonderfully inclusive and nurturing education and enrichment experiences, resulting in Newham’s high educational outcomes. Cllr Ruiz, herself a dedicated school Governor of many years, stated that, whilst it was known that

there remained evidence of racism, inequality and disproportionality in the educational participation and achievement of some groups of children and young people across our community, she was confident that governors and trustees could all work together to tackle this and to eradicate these features of the education system. Cllr Ruiz closed by saying: “It is with great pride and pleasure that I open our governors’ and trustees’ conference today, in full knowledge that we will all continue to set aside our differences and come together today to collaborate and share our thoughts and ideas as we reflect on how we can achieve even greater success through our partnership so that we can all be proud of the opportunities available to any child or young person born, moving into, growing up, learning and living in our great London Borough of Newham.” Anita Stewart, Director of Education and Skills, added her voice of welcome, thanking Governors and Trustees for their service in addressing challenges and achieving success, and drawing attention to the importance of the Inclusive Nurturing Schools Toolkit, launched by the Royal Society of Arts and recently presented to Newham Headteachers. Mehak Tajani, Senior Researcher in the Education team at the RSA, leading the team’s work on school exclusions, was the key note speaker. Mehak explained ‘the why, the what and the how’, which led to the creation of the toolkit. She talked of the RSA’s Pinball Kids report (2020) which looked at how school exclusions could be reduced with a renewed focus on trusting, reciprocal relationships
between schools, and pupils, families and public services. Joan Deslandes OBE, Headteacher of Kingsford Community School, provided a real perspective, speaking of promising inclusive and nurturing practice at her own school, which is one of Newham’s high-achieving schools, with practical living examples of how this works day-to-day. Workshops were provided by Mehak Tajani, and The Education Space’s own Stewart Kiddell, Business Development Manager, Anne Sundberg, Governance Development Officer, and Chris Fagan, Business Application Support Manager. Paul Smith, Strategic Advisor for Education and Inclusion for the London Borough of Newham, and Sarah Beaumont, Head of Governance at The Education Space, closed the conference with focus on the effectiveness of governance in Newham. “Boards must be ambitious for all children and young people and infused with a passion for education and a commitment to continuous school improvement that enables the best possible outcomes.” Sarah Beaumont, Head of Governance, referred to this inspirational quote from the Governance Handbook 2019 in the final segment of the morning. This passion and ambition was no doubt demonstrated by those who gave up their Saturday to join the strong community of governors and trustees in Newham to come together to support their schools. Thanks to Elmhurst Primary School for providing superb facilities.

#BeMe Digital Inclusion Program Paulette Watson Academy Achievers
As part of the #BeMe digital inclusion program, Academy Achievers have gone into schools across London and are currently working with Cumberland and Kingsford schools in Newham. As part of this program, Paulette interviewed Ricardo Green, Assistant Headteacher at Kingsford Community School. Paulette: Thank you for agreeing to be part of the #BeMe digital inclusion. Tell me a bit about yourself. Ricardo: I am Ricardo Green, I am the Assistant Headteacher here at Kingsford Community School based in Newham East London. I have a curriculum responsibility and pastoral responsibility I am the lead for our school’s Career Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) provision and our aspirations as well. My CEIAG responsibility is ensuring that our school is working towards improving our Gatsby benchmarks of Good Career guidance, evidence that they can select their journey from year 7 to year 11, and ultimately prepare our

young people so that when they go into post 16, they are informed about the career pathways, that they have the best colleges, sixth forms and apprenticeships to go into. So what we are discussing today is very pertinent to my role. Paulette: Why do you think the #BeMe digital inclusion program is vital for your female students, particularly the BAME and BME females? Ricardo: It’s very important and I was touched and connected with what you were saying in your opening address. And just a bit of context really, we are in the borough of Newham. This is a progressive borough and has seen significant regeneration in recent years. However, Newham still ranks high according to London’s poverty profile. So, for our young people, they are still faced with high poverty rates in relation to housing, temporary accommodation, and also as a borough in terms of benefits in which parents are claiming to rank high, resulting in our girls being economically disadvantaged. Now in addition to those factors, our young

girls particularly our BAME girls, face sexism, which means in the workplace the gender pay cut which is something that has received a lot of national attention recently. Racism too, as we know has got a lot of attention recently. And what we know is that ethnic minorities are still grossly underrepresented particularly in the STEM industries and even culturally. So we talk about the work place culture gap and our young people being from East London and being confident to work in different environments and with people from various different backgrounds as well. So this program is very key for our young people. Paulette: Why do you think young females must have positive role models in STEM and STEAM? Ricardo: I think it’s absolutely key, it really is. For our young girls to see females who have worked within this (Tech) industry, it will give them a sense of aspiration. It will give them a picture of what they can hope to aspire to; for them to know that it is achievable, they are able to look up to these role models and to see themselves in these people. It is such a fulfilling feeling because as we know it is so important and is so significant that you are able to see yourself in a whole range of different environments; it is key. I would say that for the young people when they get out of the walls of their self-esteem it boosts their confidence, it develops them and their whole sense of self-worth. So role models are key. Paulette: What impact will it have on schools and the community? In terms of seeing a role model, what would that do for that young female’s personal development, confidence and self-esteem; and how would that impact on Newham from a wider perspective?
Ricardo: As you mentioned, it will bolster their self-esteem and confidence, and ultimately it will empower our young people. It will most certainly raise the aspirations of all of our people within our school. We have a set number of girls who will be involved in the program but their achievements are going to be shared inside the school from assemblies, newsletters and discussions; other children will see what they are doing, and straight away it will boost their own aspirations as well. I hope that this will also enable the young people to really start to use this information to plan their own career pathways, which means that they will know the types of subjects, particularly at part 16, that they would need to study for them to be able to go on to the university; because we are talking about raising the bar and having the impact of them knowing that they can achieve beyond the stars. In terms of day to day in lessons, science, math technology, these young people naturally do well, but the fact that they know it is going to be linked towards their future projection, it will have that extra relevance, and that extra relevance will lead to extra motivation and also heighten their interest. So undoubtedly it’s going to increase their academic attainment as well. Now wider than the school, and this is probably the part that really motivates me as a school leader and also as someone from the Newham as well, these young people are going to go home and share this information of what they are doing with their family and with their friends. It begins to have an impact on the culture. Most importantly, when these young people go through this career path and they get into the STEM industries, they serve as role models to the other young people that are in the schools through their friends and families as well. It will increase their network and they will go on to become economically independent and be able to contribute to society. So the prospects of this program are quite fantastic in all honesty. Kensington Primary School Headteacher Receives OBE Kensington Primary School Ben Levinson
Ben Levinson OBE is Headteacher of Kensington Primary School in East Ham. He was awarded an OBE for Services to Education in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours List. On 30th March I went to Windsor Castle to collect my OBE. It was an incredibly surreal and humbling experience. Being there to accept the award on behalf of all the amazing people I have had the honour of working with was truly special. Everyone was incredibly kind – I’ve never had so many people congratulate me in such a short space of time! Prince Charles presented the award and seemed genuinely interested in the work we are doing at Kensington. We talked about the value of education, the benefits of multilingualism, and the current situation with refugees from Ukraine. It is a morning I will remember keenly for the rest of my life. I hope it will also open further doors as we work to improve the education and opportunities for children and communities in East Ham, Newham and beyond.
