THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS

Hello! My name is Luke Craig and I have been a teacher at Britannia Village Primary School in Newham for the past 10 years. I went to primary school in Newham myself (St Luke’s in Canning Town) and I love living and working in this borough. I am a big West Ham fan and excited that you can see the West Ham stadium from The Education Space’s new offices in Stratford! I became Computing Lead around 2014, just as the government brought in the new Computing Curriculum. This was the first time I had learnt about coding, programming, computational thinking, and Scratch, there was a lot to take in! I remember finding NPW’s curriculum leader meetings very helpful at the time. Like many schools, we had difficulties with hardware, old laptops, trolleys that didn’t charge, temperamental internet, and staff who were understandably not very confident to teach this new subject. As well as worrying about the new curriculum content, the Computing Lead was often the person called upon to de-jam the printers, fix display issues, reset passwords, sort out network/wifi problems, to de-tangle charging wires, and just generally go around turning things off and on. I secretly hoped to dump this role onto someone else, so I applied for the maths job… But I didn’t get the maths job. So then I started looking around at how other schools were making the most of technology. We visited another local school that used Chromebooks and decided to invest in these devices for our students. We trained our staff in Google for Education and started saving all our resources in the cloud. Over time, lots of the hardware issues were resolved and we finally had the tools to provide a high-quality computing curriculum to our students.

ISSUE 61 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST

Luke will be offering support and training on the following areas: Google: Level 1 course, Level 2 course, Admin course, Introductory session, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Sites, Forms, calendar, Gmail, YouTube, Flipgrid, Bookcreator, Screencastify, Nearpod, Google arts and culture, Google Earth. Curriculum support: Scratch ideas (YouTube, CS First, Teacher account, Scratch Junior), Lego Spike Prime, Micro:bit, Beebots/probots, Busy Things Coding, Code.org, Spheros, Minecraft coding, iMovie on iPads - Green screen, Adobe Creative Cloud Express, Jamboard, Thinglink. Interesting tech tools: Use Flipgrid to record evidence of Computing, use Bookcreator to create and publish your own ebook, use Google sites to create and publish a website in seconds, use Nearpod to improve assessment and engagement during lessons, Loom/Screencastify to record your screen. THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS

There are so many amazing resources out there that can help students learn about technology and allow them to be creative. We use a range of online resources to deliver our Computing curriculum including Scratch, CS First, iMovie, Garageband, Adobe, Bookcreator, Busy Things, and J2E. We also use physical devices such as Beebots, Probots, Micro:bits, Lego Spike Prime, Ohbots and more. In hindsight, I am delighted I didn’t get that maths job in 2016 because the computing curriculum is the most exciting subject to lead with so many fun, engaging and useful resources coming out all the time. In my new role with The Education Space I am really looking forward to supporting schools across London. As a Google Certified Innovator and Trainer, I will initially be focussing on supporting schools in Newham with teacher training and providing curriculum support to computing subject leads. Have a look through the new training page to see some of the support on offer including Google Certification training and Scratch training days.

ISSUE 61 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST

There is so much scope for students to demonstrate their creativity using technology and I want to help other teachers and Computing Leads discover their passion for the subject and to inspire their students . I look forward to meeting you all at our first curriculum network meeting later this term.

If you would like some more information on how we can support you moving forward please do not hesitate to contact us at Training@ TheEducationSpace.co.uk or 0208 249 6904 (option 1). #BeMe Digital Inclusion Program Paulette Watson Academy Achievers

As part of the #BeMe digital inclusion program, Academy Achievers have gone into schools across London and are currently working with Cumberland and Kingsford schools in Newham. As part of this program, Paulette interviewed Omar, he former Headteacher for Cumberland School. Paulette: Welcome Omar. My name is Paulette Watson; it’s a pleasure to have you today on the #BeMe digital inclusion interview. The #BeMe digital inclusion program aims to raise 1 million females’ aspiration in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math related careers. As you know, there is a lack of BAME and BME females represented in the Tech sector due to a lack of role models, employment gaps, degree gaps, retention gaps, workplace culture, underrepresentation and the pandemic gap. In your YouTube video, I see that you and your staff have very high expectations for your students. The students talk about the dynamic reporting system and this tour has

ISSUE 61 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST

revolutionised the way your team believes in the curriculum. I believe that our #BeMe digital inclusion programme will also add value to your females’ educational attainment levels and they will be in control of their own tech career path. Tell me a bit about you, Omar Omar: My name is Omar, and I am the headteacher for Cumberland Community School. I’ve been a headteacher here for 3 years. I live in Newham, I work in Newham; I have always worked in Newham. Prior to Cumberland Community School, I was at Forest Gate community school for many years. I’m here now and Cumberland and Forest Gate Community School are sister schools, we’re in the same trust, we are in close proximity to one another and I’m here, the school is doing really well, and long may that continue. Paulette: Why do you think the #BeMe digital inclusion program is vital for your female students, particularly the BAME and BME?

8

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER - NEWS

Omar: In your opening remarks, you referred to women particularly women from the ethnic minority community being in STEM and innovation. That says it all for me. We need to get many of our young students particularly females into STEM and into technology and into innovation. That’s where the future is and that’s where the future is heading; and I do think that just like they are representing other sectors, there needs to be a big push in getting them into this industry because that’s where the future jobs will be going forward. Paulette: The #BeMe aligns with the Gatsby benchmarks of Good Career guidance, there’s 8 of these, a stable career program learning from career and labour market information, just a minute of each people, linking curriculum learning to careers, encounters with employers and employees, experience in workplaces and in college with further and higher education. Diversity and inclusion are some of the biggest challenges facing the tech industry today. So when businesses consist of people from the same background, they often leave diverse ideas and perspectives behind. The two most significant barriers for women in tech are lack of mentors (48%) and lack of role models (42%). Having little support can impact gender diversity in tech as it can cause uncertainty for those interested in entering the industry. Omar, why do you think young females must have positive role models in STEM and STEAM? Omar: I think everybody needs role models. I do think if you are a youngster and want to aspire to any particular sector, you need people to look up to. Particularly women in those particular sectors. I think we need to

ISSUE 61 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR A WORLD THAT DOESN’T YET EXIST

look at this realistically and need to look at initiatives to try to broaden our horizon and get more females into the tech sector. One way to do that is through some of these STEM programmes to open horizons. One other thing that is so important is mentoring and coaching. It is so important to be able to be mentored by someone who is in a particular sector is so important. For example, when I was a senior leader, I had this amazing headteacher who used to mentor me when no one else believed in me. I never thought I could be a headteacher one day. However, that suddenly changed because of the mentoring, the guidance that I got from my coach who was an experienced headteacher. And only when we had those conversations, and we engaged in dialogue about what it’s like being a headteacher; only then did I say to myself actually I could be a headteacher one day; and without that guidance and support, I don’t think I would have become a headteacher. So going back to your point about positive role models and mentors for young girls and boys; to be able to break into this sector is extremely important and is something I would advocate for, and would say if we had more opportunities for our youngsters it would change the landscape going forward because remember the future of jobs will be tech-based. Paulette: What impact will it have on your schools and the community? Omar: In terms of aspiration, that’s the most important aspect of it. It would raise aspirations. For some students, it would break that glossy lubricious, porous, socio-economic barriers. I’ll give you an example; 90% of our students have not left Newham. To be able to have an initiative like this where it raises their aspiration levels, to show them what they could achieve if they work hard, is amazing. You know we’ve got some of the brightest students in the country in our school but because of those lack of opportunities, their social-economic background become a barrier. Initiatives like this will do a world of wonders for those students and will give them opportunities for the future.
