in the classroom. The presentation was even co-written by the children themselves. Mark Bentley FRSA, Safeguarding and Cyber Security Lead, London Grid for Learning (LGfL), provided an insightful look at the responsibilities of the governing board with regard to Safeguarding and Cyber Security.
The challenge for educators is working out how to integrate these new technologies into the classroom safely and effectively. The speed with which technology evolves, makes this ever more challenging. This year’s Governors’ and Trustees’ Annual Conference, held on Saturday 3rd February 2024, showcased some of the opportunities technology can play in education, as well as a focusing on how we can do so safely and effectively. Cllr Sarah Ruiz, Cabinet member for Children’s Services and Education opened the conference by setting the local context, reporting that Newham has one of the highest % of schools rated good or
outstanding in the UK. Keynote speaker, Emma Knights OBE Chief Executive NGA, shared details of the 2023 national governance survey, dealing with the workload challenge and covered some of the opportunities for governance in the year ahead. Asif Mangera, Director of Strategy at The Education Space, delivered a workshop on the role which AI can play in education, Governors had the chance to discuss potential ideas on the use of AI in their schools. Luke Craig, Computing Curriculum Lead at Britannia Education Trust (BET), shared some of the amazing ways in which BET use technology
ISSUE 75 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR THE FUTURE
The final workshop provided Governors with the chance to reflect on social media and how best to ensure their schools were using it effectively, as well as helping students/ parents to ensure they are using it safely, and was led by Stewart Kiddell, Head of Business Development at The Education Space The initial feedback was extremely positive and this is further evidenced by some of the really interesting conversations that developed as a result of the talks and workshops. Thank you to all speakers and delegates for attending and for engaging so passionately in the programme of workshops and presentations. A special thank you to our amazing hosts for the day at Kingsford Community School.

The National Educational Visits Conference returns to London on 13 June 2024 with a fantastic programme of speakers and workshops fully focused on EVCs and individuals with responsibility for educational visits in school settings. Around 200 delegates are expected to attend the third Educational Visits Conference, organised by EVOLVE Advice, and which is being held at the British Library – a popular educational visits venue itself. This year’s conference theme is Be Inspired and delegates will hear from schools who have found innovative ways to address some of the biggest challenges faced by schools when delivering educational visits. Sessions will be led by Educational Visits Advisers, legal experts, specialists in health and safety, providers, and schools. Delegates will be able to choose from a range of topics grouped into four broad themes: funding; inclusion; making the case for educational visits; and risk management. The programme includes panel discussions and workshops as well as training and development in core areas such as risk assessment and educational visits planning. Each session will provide inspiration and practical ideas to implement in your own setting. It’s an excellent way to stay up to date with the latest guidance and learn new approaches or strategies to support you in your role.
adventure experiences, can have a lasting and hugely positive impact on children and young people. In facing and overcoming challenges they learn so much about themselves and their place in the world. “As teachers and providers, we play a crucial role in creating these experiences and shaping the future of our young people. The National Educational Visits Conference is a great opportunity for EVCs to come together, learn from each other, and explore new ideas that will inspire you and your students. “ The National Educational Visits Conference is organised by EVOLVE Advice, the educational visits specialists. EVOLVE Advice’s Educational Visits Advisers provide advice, guidance and training to over three thousand schools in the UK and overseas. The company was founded in 2017 to help schools deliver safe and memorable educational visits for all young people and this continues to be the foundation of everything we do. Jake Wiid, founder and Director of Legal and Compliance at EVOLVE Advice says: “The EVC role is an important one for all schools, but it isn’t always given the recognition it deserves and EVCs can feel isolated or unsupported. The National Educational Visits Conference is a fantastic opportunity for EVCs and those responsible for educational visits to come together for a unique day of learning and development.
Journalist and TV news reporter, Louise Beale returns to host the conference, and this year’s keynote speaker is Rhys Jones, a world-record breaking mountaineer who uses his own experiences to inspire young people to achieve their goals through speaking engagements in schools and practical hands-on residential activity experiences led by his company, Campfire Wild Adventures.
“Every session is designed to offer practical ideas and inspiration - you’ll go away with clear actions to put into practice straight away.”
Rhys says: “Working with young people in the great outdoors is about as rewarding as it gets. Educational visits, particularly residential and
