We human beings are social animals. We need mutual communication and contact with each other. Simultaneously, we are natural animals with a primal reliance and a longing for nature. Thus we need a private space of our own with no disturbance from the outside world. Houses are expected to be elastic between extraversion and introversion as well as privacy and openness. A weak link should be kept in terms of newly-established interpersonal relationship.

Boundry between Community and Nature The project is a private residence located in Shapowei, an old port in Xiamen City. It resides between fishermen’s houses, facing the port and backed by the community. The first floor of the building severs as the passage to the outside, connecting the community and the port. 3
OBSERVATION: Human, nature, society private
In the society nowadays, the relationship between people is rather subtle and complex. We are constrained into small windows of the skyscrapers in the city. Fast-paced lifestyle and busy work bring us loneliness. What’s more, social networks gradually substitute our daily dialogs. In such an information explosion age ,face to face communication becomes a rarity. On the other side, living in the high-density concrete forest, human beings still have the instinct to close to nature, yearning for sunlight, fresh air and plant etc. These bring the fundamental living problems in our daily life.

CONCEPT: Translucent Living Space.
Public
A house should be a medium between the environment and the inner world, just like the clothes. Nowdays people want not only extensive communication but also more privavy and independence. To adapt to this kind of new relationship, the house should keep in soft-linkage with surrounding. It should be ambiguous like something between 0 and 1 in binary system. That is the translucent living space.

As time goes on, architects have been promoting the research on transparency of living houses. They have been doing research on the exploitation of transparent glass materials—visually transparent and the hidden wall—physically transparent. It is an illustration of their ideal and aesthetical pursuit of transparency and purity.

Sunlight Analysis Large depth makes the central area dark since only a narrow space can collect the sunlight from two vertical sides. The creative use of the semi-enclosed staircase and the atrium increases the lighting and improves the lighting condition of the indoor environment.
Formation The purpose of this design is to create a living space which is not tightly linked to but in proper connection with the outside world. The stilted first floor serves as the passageway from community to the port. The social activities happen in the way home. The semienclosed staircase is fixed on one end of the building. The residents can enjoy sunshine and raindrops when they come from one room to another when passing through the staircase. The interior of the house is absorbing the lighting from the atrium with trees. The outside environment extends inward.

The staircase is a kind of space between outdoor and indoor, which is translucent and ambiguous. The activities in this space is also variable and undefined. People will be motivated to love nature and release themselves because of the place is not only closer to the sea,the plants,as well the community ,but also still feel like home.

The house resides between fishermen’s houses which are narrow and close tightly to each other, facing the port and backed by the community. On account of the situation, first floor of the house is opened to public use and serves as the passage , breaking the continous and impassable interface of street. Furthermore, some plants grow inward and some chairs are placed in the grassplot, providing a vest-pocket park for the community. Besides, the mirrors set at the two sides on the walls make the view broader and blur the boundary of internal and external space. It also will be a new sensory experience of transparency. This design approach is a response of the relationship between the residents and the society, as well nature.

Chinese Traditional Conception of Nature
Project Description:
In Chinese culture, man and nature is an harmonious organic whole. The awareness is widely reflected in the traditional Chinese landscape painting.Chinese garden construction mainly takes the artistic picturesque conception of Chinese landscape painting. In this painting, village, pedestrians, buildings, bridges and boats are seemingly scattered throughout the picture, but link each other rearward, and constitute an implied narrative structure of the space and time. In this structure, naturalness and mankind act intersubjectivity roles. Pedestrians hint the roads, buildings suggest the sight spots, the overlapped plants and rocks imply the distance and layers. Rocks, waters, buildings, plants and paths interweave, along with continuous human senses.
Traditional Chinese garden is the treasure in Chinese culture, which is quite different from modern design principles and techniques. Based on the course of The History of Chinese and Foreign Landscape, the project steps further into the case study and literature review. Then we assume one of Chinese ancient literati as the owner of the garden, combining with the results of the previous study, and design a private garden for him. This course is aimed to a better understanding of the methods of construction and the form of ancient architecture.
Process:
ROCK
WATER
BUILDING
PLANT
PEOPLE
PATH
Four Elements in Traditional Chinese Garden ROCK are viewed as the mountains in the nature, and also help to divide up the space and stop the line of sight.
WATER is used to imitate all natural form of water boby, it is also considered to signify the virtuous qualities of human behavior.
BUILDING are the main places which shelter for people's activities, also should be incorporated into the garden's scenery.
PLANTS decorate the garden with vivid colors, while bring in sounds through wind and rain. Some plants indicate certain human virtues. 13

1 more soil less rock 2 more rock less soil 3 rock at waterside 4 only sandy soil
Path, which is the crucial clue to connect all the elements, is often specially designed to guide the viewer’s sensory experience and to achieve a continuous entity. And with human activity, all elements are able to be organized in a more varied and subjective way. These two factors redifine the original physical structure as a new narrative one.

Concept “The chapters of a floating life” tells the life of Shen Fu and his wife Chen Yun, which is full of frustration. Mental happiness and realistic sorrow contrast distinctly, express both the romantic feeling and the tragedy hue. According to the two basic emotional clues the design divides the garden into two parts, one for living and amusing, another for touring and thinking. This comparison will be integrated into the garden atmosphere, focusing on organizing the different viewer’s experiences. By reappearing the scenes of ancient life (garden, building, furniture) , the viewers may be able to travel through the time and to empathize with the owner. 14

This part is for living and amusing, which is inclined to suggest the romantic spirit and optimistic true nature of the owner. A series of patios structure the main landscape of the part and connect those functional buildings as well. The part offers places of daily life in which the real interest exists. Along with the pathway, pedestrians could experience the joys and warm details of their life.

Unlike the western architectural systems, the Chinese ancient architecture has a system based primarily on timber-work. the structure of Chinese ancient architecture dose not only has a significance of construction, expressing subtly and wisely structural logic and ration, but also can be regarded as the beauty of architecture itself, combing with climate. There is a prototype in Chinese ancient architectural system which can be adapted to different activities with simple transformation. Its complex and subtleness also reflect the wisdom of the ancient craftsman.

Year after year, and age after age, Prometheus hung there. Now and then old Helios, the driver of the sun car, would look down upon him and smile; now and then flocks of birds would bring him messages from far-off lands; once the ocean nymphs came and sang wonderful songs in his hearing; and oftentimes men looked up to him with pitying eyes, and cried out against the tyrant who had placed him there. ---- Old Greek Stories By James Baldwin

The site is Baidicheng( White Emperor City) which is located on the northern 2010 175m bank of the Yangtze River in Chong Qing. White Emperor City has a history of 2,000 years, it is one of famous historical heritages in the Three Gorges Area. After the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, this city was flood and become 2010 level:175m a small island. Right now, all the memorial relics drowned deep in the water.
2005 135m
2005 level:135m
Ideas Generation VILLAGE The original village texture was built along the typical contour in mountain area. The city downtown and historical protection area are linked by this village.
DROWNING With the rise of water level, the village was submerged and all its people were forced to move out. All the village relics are drown and disappeared forever.
REFLECTION The water serves as a large mirror. All the reflection of the village just make all the things like yesterday once more.
Design Statement [Repetition of Suffering] This calling for concerns on ruins caused by the Three Gorges was named after the Greek Myth. Prometheus is the god who sacrificed himself for human progress, so he had been punished. The important historical role and its profits bringing by the Three Gorges Dam could not be denied, however, in a way that cost huge sacrifices. With the villages and historical sites drowning in deep water, people seems to forget. But they should not. Just like Prometheus has to suffer the pain dying day after day, these optical fiber tubes would be lighten up one by one when the sun rises, and fade away gradually when the sun goes down. It stimulates the process that the water level rose, engulfing all the houses in village.
DISSOLVE The reflection was abstracted from 3 dimensions into horizon matrix. With the dissolved village forms, the reflection are not complete, it changes when the incident light changes.
CONNECTION The new road follows the main road in the original village, it sinks and cut throw the village. Once again, the downtown and the island are connected.

Hundreds of years, the mean river level of the Yangtze River had remained relatively steady, while the population had been increasing gradually. However, the construction of three gorges dam upset the balance, in the ten year impoundment period millions of people were forced to migrate and resettle, 26 counties had been submerged and hundreds of heritages had gone. The design is aimed at freezing the suffering moment and replaying it.
