Students’ Union Full Time Officers - Oifigigh Lánaimseartha Chomhaltas na Mc Léinn The President co-ordinates the activities of the Students’ Union and works with University Management to achieve the best academic environment and quality of life for NUI Galway students. The President is responsible for the finances of the Union, for co-ordinating Union campaigns during the year and he acts as chief spokesperson of the Union. The President also oversees the commercial services of the Union, including the College Bar, Smokey’s and the Campus shop. If you feel things could be done better or if you can identify an area in which improvement is needed within the University, then talk to Emmet. I’m from Athlone in County Westmeath and came to NUI Galway in 2006 to study civil law. I graduated in 2009 and during my final year I was elected Education Officer of the SU. I was re-elected last year and was elected SU President in March 2011. My biggest goal for the SU for the year ahead is to make all students aware of what we do and who we are, so that everyone can really feel that they belong to the Union. I also want to begin an annual voter registration campaign so we can gradually build up a big student vote in Galway city, which will greatly help us when we’re lobbying politicians on student issues. My personal goals for the year are to begin some driving lessons (eek!), continue with tag rugby, start hill walking around Galway, and hopefully complete a part-time Diploma in Community Development Practice here at NUI Galway. Students’ Union Full Time Officers - Oifigigh Lánaimseartha Chomhaltas na Mc Léinn Conor is the Vice-President/ Education Officer and assists students with problems in the areas of grants, examinations, the library and computer facilities. Conor also works with the University Management to improve academic services and is a member of the Academic Council. The Education Officer is also responsible for the co-ordination of the Students’ Union Council. If you need help with any of these issues, give Conor a call. Hi I am Conor and I am your Education Officer for 2011/2012. I got involved in the Students’ Union this year to make your academic aspect of NUIG as enjoyable as the social aspect. I am always available for any questions that you have and the more feedback I can get from the students the better able I am to help out and make changes. So don’t be afraid to pop up to me with any problems or ideas you have, whether they be academic or social. I like having the craic a lot, too much at times, so I’m keen to hear anything that will make NUI Galway more enjoyable! I look forward to the banter in 2011/2012! Students’ Union Full Time Officers - Oifigigh Lánaimseartha Chomhaltas na Mc Léinn Brian is the Welfare Officer and assists with students’ problems in the areas of accommodation, childcare, study, health, finances and social welfare. If you need some advice in any of these areas or have any other welfare-related problems, then drop in to Brian’s office or give him a call. Dia Daoibh a chairde, Is mise Brian Grant, and the most important thing you all need to know about me is I am here to help you for the next year. I have been involved in many college clubs and societies over the past four years, most notably the men’s Gaelic football club and the Rotaract society. I am a Galway native, living in a peculiar parish called Moycullen, currently finishing a masters in Irish Studies. Whatever you need from condoms, hassle with landlords or someone to talk to when you’re feeling down, please don’t hesitate to call me. Students’ Union Part Time Officers - Oifigigh Pháirtaimseartha Chomhaltas na Mc Léinn As Irish Language Officer, Senan is responsible for the implementation of the Students’ Union’s bi-lingual policy, and the promotion of Irish culture in College. He provides support facilities to the Students’ Union Executive, clubs and societies to help achieve this, e.g. grammatically correct posters. As Muineachán mé agus tá mé ag déanamh staidéir ar an Ghaeilge agus Soc&Pol. Tá mé páirteach sa Chumann Drámaíochta. Tá mé i mo chomh-láithreoir ar chlár raidió ar Flirt Fm, gach Céadaoin (ar 3pm!). Tá mé páirteach le FEE (Free Education for Everyone) fosta. D’athbhunaigh muid ECO-SOC anuraidh agus bhí mé i m’auditor air. Shocraigh mé gabháil fá choinne bheith i m’oifigeach Gaeilge mar tá géarghá le beocht i saol na Gaeilge ar an champas. Tá mé ag tnúth go mór leis an bhliain seo amach romham agus dóchas agam go dtig linn go leor a bhaint amach. I’m from Monaghan and I study Irish and Sociology & Politics. I’m part of Cumann Drámaíochta. I’m a co presenter on a radio show on Flirt FM every Wednesday (at 3:00pm!). I’m also part of FEE (Free Education for Everyone). Last year I was Auditor of the revived ECO-SOC.I decided to run for Irish Language Officer because there is a real need for vitality in the Irish language on campus. I’m really looking forward to this year and I hope we achieve a lot.

To help achieve this, he initiates campaigns to highlight breaches of equality which affect students within NUI Galway. The Equality Officer is also responsible for promoting integration in all Students’ Union activities, and works closely with the Welfare Officer. Hi, I’m Will, I am your Equality Officer. To help achieve this, Cian performs research into student development and community participation resulting in initiatives that contribute to the overall development of students. If you have any questions related to volunteering or activities on or off campus, you can contact Cian. How’s it going folks, I’ll be your SDO for the year. My family emigrated when I was 6 so I spent most of my life bouncing around Europe. I’ve a history of involvement with NUIG societies such as Labour Youth, PDS, Suas and Lit and Deb. Outside of the university, I’m an artilleryman with the Reserve Defence Force and am also interested in tattoos, junk food and books. If you have any ideas or queries about extracurricular activities, give me a buzz. Students’ Union Part Time Officers - Oifigigh Pháirtaimseartha Chomhaltas na Mc Léinn The Societies’ Chairperson represents NUI Galway societies on the Students’ Union Executive and University Societies Committee. He helps to organise the Clubs and Societies Awards with the Clubs’ Captain. If you have any questions about the University’s societies, you can contact Paul. Oh hai! If you’ve had some society involvement before you probably know me or at least to see as I’ve been basically living in Áras Na Mac Léinn for the past two years working on a dozen committees constantly. I’m one of those lovely people who’s always attached to something technological therefore always available to contact by any means….when not blowing my hearing to smithereens with music that is. My main aim is getting societies working more with the rest of the student body and clubs also to make the campus a far more cohesive place for extracurricular activities. Students’ Union Part Time Officers - Oifigigh Pháirtaimseartha Chomhaltas na Mc Léinn The Postgraduate Officer is responsible for developing Students’ Union policy on postgraduate issues and lobbying for improved induction, training, services and facilities for postgraduate students. She works closely with the Vice-President / Education Officer on postgraduate related issues and encourages postgraduate involvement in the Union and in University life. I am currently a PhD Candidate with the Department of Economics evaluating Cancer screening in Ireland. I commenced my undergraduate degree in St. Angela’s College, Sligo after travelling and being in the workforce for 8 years. In St. Angela’s I was involved in the SU as well as being a member of the Drama Society. I came to Galway three years ago to finish my degree and continued on to do the Masters in Health Economics followed by a PhD. As postgraduate officer I hope to improve conditions for postgraduate students as well as facilitate integration across the disciplines. Thosaigh mé ar mo bhunchéim i gColáiste San Aingeal, Sligeach i ndiaidh dom 8 mbliana a chaitheamh ag taisteal agus ag obair. I gColáiste San Aingeal bhí baint agam le Comhaltas na Mac Léinn agus bhí mé páirteach sa Chumann Drámaíochta. Tháinig mé go Gaillimh trí bliana ó shin le mo chéim a chríochnú, agus thug mé faoi Mháistreacht in Eacnamaíocht Sláinte agus faoi PhD ansin. Tá súil agam, mar oifigeach iarchéime, na coinníollacha atá ag mic léinn iarchéime a fheabhsú agus a chinntiú go bhféadfar cónascadh a dhéanamh idir na disciplíní éagsúla.

Students’ Union Part Time Officers - Oifigigh Pháirtaimseartha Chomhaltas na Mc Léinn The Clubs’ Captain represents NUI Galway Clubs on the Students’ Union Executive and the Sports and Recreation Union. His job is to liaise with club officers to assist with their work during the year and to work with the Societies Chairperson to organise the Clubs and Societies Awards Night. If you have any questions about the University’s sports clubs, you can contact the Clubs’ Captain. Hey! I’m delighted to be the NUIG Clubs Captain and look forward to this new challenge. I am in my final year of Undenominated Science. I have been involved in Clubs since first year, in particular the Badminton Club, serving as treasurer. I hope to increase the profile of clubs further this year and reaffirm NUIG as a top University for sports in the country. I am from Miltown Malbay in Clare and as a result have a great passion for Irish music and dance. So if there is a céilí nearby, you’ll almost be certain to find me there! Students’ Union Part Time Officers - Oifigigh Pháirtaimseartha Chomhaltas na Mc Léinn The Mature Students’ Officer will represent mature students on Campus and promote their full involvement in the academic and social life of the University. They will work with the other SU Officers, clubs, societies and the University as a whole to promote the development and integration of mature students at NUI Galway. Nominations for this position will open on Thursday 22nd of September and will close on Wednesday 28th of September at 5pm. The election will take place on Thursday 6th October with polling stations across campus. Last year I was a class rep for my Archaeology class. As Chairperson I want to make sure the voices of the class reps are heard in the Student Union. I’m passionate about the role that the class rep has to play and I want to help students get involved with the SU. This year the main thing I hope to do is to encourage more engineering and informatics students to get involved with the Students’ Union, even if it’s just to come up to the office and let us know how college life is treating you. Students’ Union Structures - Struchtúir Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn NUI Galway Students’ Union is the representative body and voice for over 13,000 students. Every NUI Galway student has automatic access to the wide range of social, recreational and commercial services provided and funded by the Students’ Union. These services include the provision of information and support across all areas that affect students in NUI Galway including education, welfare and campus life. We advise, lobby and speak on your behalf from orientation through to graduation. The Students’ Union is your voice so make sure that your voice is heard during the year.

Executive Committee

The sixteen Students’ Union Executive Officers are nominated and elected each year by you, our student members. While the President, along with the full time Union staff, is mainly responsible for the day-to-day running of the Union, the Students’ Union Executive is the committee that runs the Union on an ongoing basis. The sixteen Executive Officers are responsible for providing you with information and advice covering the whole spectrum of student life from academic issues to issues regarding welfare, finance, accommodation, equality, clubs, societies, the Irish language and much more. Of the sixteen members of the Executive, three are paid (full-time) Officers, i.e. the President and two Vice-Presidents, while the other thirteen Officers work on a part-time, unpaid basis and are full-time students. The Executive Committee meets on a weekly basis during term time and is answerable to the Students’ Union Council and, therefore, to you the members of the Union. The three full-time Officers must present a written report of their work done each week at the Executive Committee meeting and all sixteen Officers present reports on their work done to date at the monthly Students’ Union Council meetings.

Students’ Union Commercial Services

NUI Galway Students’ Union operates a number of businesses on the University campus, including the College Bar, Shop and catering outlets. These commercial interests exist for two main reasons; the most important of which is to provide top quality services for the students and staff of NUI Galway at a reasonable cost. The other reason is to generate profits to fund other Union activities. The profits generated by these businesses are used to fund the Union’s representational activities, and also to pay for services such as the Union’s publications and entertainment activities. A large portion of these profits are allocated to the Student Projects Fund which is used to fund various student initiatives to help get them off the ground, including Sin, FlirtFM, sports equipment and various other capital programmes. An Coiste Feidhmiúcháin

Seisear Oifigeach Feidhmiúcháin déag atá ar Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn – oifigigh a d’ainmnigh agus a thogh sibhse, mic léinn OÉ Gaillimh, i gcaitheamh na bliana. Cé go bhfuil an tUachtarán, mar aon le comhaltaí foirne lánaimseartha Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn, freagrach as imeachtaí laethúla an Chumainn, is é Coiste Feidhmiúcháin Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn atá freagrach as an gCumann a reáchtáil ó lá go lá. Tá an seisear Oifigeach Feidhmiúcháin déag freagrach as eolas agus comhairle a sholáthar maidir le saol an mhic léinn – ceisteanna acadúla agus leasa, cúrsaí airgeadais, lóistín, comhionannas, clubanna, cumainn, an Ghaeilge agus go leor leor eile. As an seisear déag comhaltaí den Choiste Feidhmiúcháin, Oifigigh ar tuarastal (lánaimseartha) iad triúr, i.e. an tUachtarán agus beirt Leas-Uachtarán. Oibríonn an triúr Oifigeach déag eile ar bhonn páirtaimseartha, gan phá. Is mic léinn lánaimseartha iad. Tagann an Coiste Feidhmiúcháin le chéile uair sa tseachtain i rith an téarma agus tá sé freagrach do Chomhairle Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn – sibhse. Ní mór don triúr Oifigeach lánaimseartha tuairisc scríofa ar an obair atá déanta acu a sholáthar gach seachtain ag cruinniú an Choiste Feidhmiúcháin agus labhraíonn an naonúr Oifigeach faoin obair atá déanta go dtí seo ag cruinnithe míosúla Chomhairle Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn.

Seirbhísí Tráchtála Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn

Tá gnóthaí a reáchtáil ag Comhaltas na Mac Léinn ar champas na hOllscoile, lena n áirítear Beár an Choláiste, an Siopa agus ionaid lónadóireachta. Tá dhá chúis ann go bhfuil na gnóthaí seo againn; seirbhís ar ardchaighdeán a chur ar fáil do mhic léinn agus baill foirne OÉ Gaillimh ag costas réasúnta an chúis is tábhachtaí. Brabús a dhéanamh chun gníomhaíochtaí eile an Chomhaltais a mhaoiniú an chúis eile. Úsáidtear an brabús a dhéanann na gnóthaí seo chun gníomhaíochtaí ionadaíochta an Chomhaltais a mhaoiniú, agus chun íoc as seirbhísí ar nós fhoilsiúcháin agus imeachtaí siamsaíochta an Chomhaltais. Students’ Union Structures - Struchtúir Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn Students’ Union Council

The Students’ Union Council (Council) consists of approximately 540 members representing every class in the University. The Council is essential to the running of the Union and is beneficial to the running of the University. It also helps bring students ever more closely involved with the workings of the Union and the University. The SU Council meets at least three times per semester and quorum for a SU Council meeting shall be fifty class representatives Each of the NUI Galway Colleges also has a College Class Representative Council together with a Postgraduate Council. Each College Council meets twice each semester: • Arts, Social Sciences & Celtic Studies Council • Science Council • Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences Council • Engineering & Informatics Council • Business, Public Policy & Law Council • Postgrad Council The object of the College Class Rep Councils is to discuss individual faculty issues while Students’ Union Council discusses University wide issues. Class Reps is co-ordinated by the Vice-President/Education Officer who works with the SU Council Chair and the Convenors to ensure that every class is represented and heard. Feel free to make use of the SU Council to get your views across by approaching your class rep or an Officer.

Getting Involved

Become a Class Rep: The Class Rep is the “Voice of your Class” and represents the views of the majority of the class. They help to solve both individual and class-wide problems. If you decide to run for Class Rep, your responsibilities will include communicating between your class and the course lecturers, attending SU Council and your College Council meetings to help formulate Students’ Union policies and arranging class parties, hoodies etc. Being a Class Rep is good fun and a great addition to your CV. Join the SU Crew: Even if you’re not an elected class rep, you can still get involved in the Students’ Union’s activities. We regularly run campaigns and events on campus and are always looking for extra help. From somewhat intimidating tasks like addressing lectures to other jobs such as handing out leaflets or preparing documentation, there’s always something that needs to be done, so join in! Cuidíonn sé/sí leat deacrachtaí a bhíonn ag daoine aonair agus ag an rang ar fad a réiteach. Má shocraíonn tú seasamh le bheith i d’Ionadaí Ranga, ar na cúraimí a bheidh ort tá ceangal cumarsáide idir do rangsa agus léachtóirí an chúrsa, freastal ar chruinnithe Chomhairle Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn agus Chomhairle do Choláiste féin le beartais Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn a chur le chéile agus le cóisir ranga srl. a eagrú. Students’ Union Elections - Toghcháin Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn Students’ Union Elections

Every year as a member of the Students’ Union you choose who you want to run your Union by electing the Executive Committee for the following year. The term of office for the elected Officers of the Union runs from the 1st of July until the 30th of June. Why vote? - Voting gives you a direct say in how your Union is run, how your issues are dealt with and how your money gets spent. It’s important to pick the people you want as it’s the Union who will be representing your views to the University and on a local, regional and national level. Your vote is your voice so speak up! When do I vote? - The full-time officers – the President, the Vice-President / Welfare Officer and the Vice-President / Education Officer – will all be elected on Thursday the 8th of March, 2012. Nominations for these positions will open on the 23rd of February, 2012. The thirteen part-time officers - will be elected on Thursday the 15th of March, 2012 with nominations opening on the 1st of March, 2012.

How to vote? • Come along to the advertised polling stations • Bring your NUI Galway Student card. • You will be given a ballot paper and pen. • Fill out the ballot paper listing your candidates in order of preference….. • Remember you don’t have to vote for more than 1 person ! • You must then fold your ballot paper to conceal your vote and place it in the sealed ballot box. • You can only vote once! The elections of Clubs’ Captain and Societies’ Chairperson takes place at a separate meeting of the Club Captains and Society Auditors respectively on polling day and it is strictly one vote per club for Clubs’ Captain and one vote per society for Societies’ Chairperson.

How do I run for Election?

You need to be nominated by 20 members of the Students’ Union and be yourself a full member of the Union i.e. a registered student. Nomination forms will be available from the Students’ Union from the day nominations open. Students’ Union Services - Seirbhísí Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn Cloakroom & Lockers

A free baggage room run by the Students’ Union is available in the basement of the Library building. The cloakroom is open 09:00 – 21:00 weekdays (close at 18:30 on Friday). Students can drop in luggage on a daily basis, but all items must be removed before closing time. For those who need to keep their books and equipment in the University for longer periods of time, the Union rents out lockers located at convenient points around the University. There’s a charge of €15-€25 for renting a locker for the academic year. Some lockers also have a deposit of €10 payable. Lockers are available online only from the start of term, so check out the Union’s website at www.su.nuigalway.ie

Secondhand Bookstore

The Union operates a year-round online second-hand bookstore on the Students’ Union website at www.su.nuigalway.ie , where you can buy or sell text books, covering every subject taught in the University. When you find the book you want call up to the Students’ Union office where you can collect and pay for the book.

Grinds Register

The Union run an online grinds register on its website at www.su.nuigalway.ie It’s updated regularly, with the majority of those offering grinds being NUI Galway postgraduate students. Tutors are not checked or regulated by the Students’ Union and costs are agreed between student and tutor. Before taking grinds, you should always consult with your lecturer or programme director, who may be able to help you out.

Publications and Websites

The Union’s website at www.su.nuigalway.ie contains a wealth of information covering every aspect of University life, including welfare, grants, fees, SU Council, the Executive Officers, at the Union get up to on a day-to-day basis and info for postgraduate students. Sin newspaper is run by the Union and consists of a printed and web version. The website at www.sin. ie is updated with all the latest happenings in entertainment, clubs, societies and other news related to campus. Full details are available in the ‘Things to Do’ section of this Diary.

The SU Sessions

The SU Sessions are a free weekly music event hosted by the Students’ Union in An Bialann (the Canteen). Every week during term we will have some of the best new musical talent in the country playing live for your listening pleasure. For information on upcoming acts check www.su.nuigalway.ie and remember you heard it here first!

Student Travel

The Students’ Union offers a range of travel services to students. Tickets for Bus Éireann services are available and you can get your Student Travelcard (necessary to obtain student rate on Iarnród Éireann) printed in the Students’ Union office in Áras na Mac Léinn. Don’t forget to bring along your NUI Galway student ID. Timetables for local,regional and national bus routes are available elsewhere in this Students’ Union diary or from the Students’ Union office.

The Sabbat Hour

Every Tuesday between 1pm and 2pm during term one of the three Full-Time (Sabbatical) Officers will be sitting at a desk in Smokey’s on the Concourse. Call over to complain, query or compliment them with no appointment necessary!

Life Skills Programme

The Life Skills Programme run by the Students’ Union offers a chance to further your development outside of the academic world through classes in areas such as: First Aid, Sign Language, Lifesaving and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. These classes are provided at a reduced rate giving you a chance to learn a new skill which, in some cases, could save someone’s life. This is also a great chance to broaden your CV. This programme is supported with funding from the Student Projects Fund. 26

Cuireann an Comhaltas seirbhísí taistil ar fáil do mhic léinn. Tá ticéid do sheirbhísí Bhus Éireann ar fáil agus is féidir do TravelCard (atá riachtanach chun ráta mac léinn a fháil le hIarnród Éireann) a fháil ó oifig an Chomhaltais in Áras na Mac Léinn. Ná déan dearmad do chárta mac léinn a bhreith leat. Tá tráthchláir do bhealaí áitiúla, réigiúnacha agus náisiúnta an mbusanna ar fáil sa dialann seo nó ó oifig an Chomhaltais.

Sabbat Hour

Students’ Union Commercial Services - Seirbhísí Tráchtála Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn SU Card

Before you do anything else, be sure to get your SU Card. The SU Card is free to all members of the Students’ Union and can be used in all Students’ Union outlets (listed below) to gather points for you to get lots of freebies and special offers during the year. You can also load cash on to your card to buy products from any of the SU Catering outlets or the SU Shop. More details about the card are available on www.su.nuigalway.ie

Students’ Union Club (“College Bar”)

The Union operates a licensed club, located at Áras na Mac Léinn. The Club is better known as “The College Bar” and provides top quality food and beverages for students all year round. A busy ents programme, live soccer, class parties, clubs and socs events and a great atmosphere means there’s always something happening there. Entertainment

The Union provides entertainment throughout the year across the campus. The College Bar hosts live music and DJ’s throughout the year, hosting some major local and national talent. Freshers’ Ents are run in late September for the benefit of first year students in NUI Galway, with the aim of getting them involved early in University life through fun activities. However, older students have been known to get involved too! Contrary to popular belief, it’s not all about drinking, and events are organised throughout the week by a range of campus societies, clubs and the Students’ Union.

Smokey’s

Smokey’s is a popular coffee dock on the Concourse of the Arts/Science Building, serving a full range of hot and cold drinks, snacks and fresh juices and smoothies . It’s open all day and is a great place to grab a coffee and a muffin and just hang about! Sandwiches and toasties are also available.

Students’ Union Shop

The Students’ Union operates the campus shop, which is located in the basement of the Library building, where students can buy newspapers at discounted rates, stationery, refreshments, lab coats, dissection kits, and all the essentials. It’s open from 08:45 until late in the evening from Monday to Friday, with daytime hours on Saturday.

The Wall Café

The Wall Café is located in the new Sports Centre. It is located at the back of the Climbing Wall hence the name. It provides the perfect spot to grab a healthy sandwich, panini or salad. Grab a smoothie with supplements after your workout or just have a freshly ground coffee whilst waiting for a friend. The Wall is open Mon - Fri 8am - 8pm and Sat & Sun 9am - 6pm.

NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards 2012

Have you got the next big idea? Invest in your future. The business and social leaders of tomorrow are on our campus today. The NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards aim to unlock the potential of the students of NUI Galway to invest in their own futures today. If you have an idea for a new business or a social enterprise then this can be the competition that can allow you to realise your goal. Students are invited to sketch out the initial proposals for their project or business and to draw up the plans they hope will make their idea a reality. Six finalists will be given the chance to take their ideas forward and to set about implementing their projects with the assistance of a financial allowance of €500 and an assigned mentor with relevant expertise. The overall winner will receive a direct investment of €15,000 in their project to really help get it off the ground. In addition, they will receive further guidance and mentoring to help bring the project forward. Two runners up prizes, each valued at €2,000 of investment capital will also be awarded. The goal of the competition is that every entrant will have taken the first steps of launching their idea and that the benefits of each idea will have been allowed to flourish. In the challenging economic times students are faced with this competition gives students the opportunity to take charge of their own future and to utilise the skills they have learned at NUI Galway to plot their own futures. The opportunity to win an investment of €15,000 in their project, coupled with the benefits of mentoring and support from experts gives students a fantastic opportunity to kick start their careers.

For the first time ever a Language and Culture Officer will be based on campus. The Language and Culture Officer’s main aim will be to promote and establish the Irish language on campus. Seán intends to organise a wide range of exciting events as Gaeilge for both the students and staff of the University. He will also insure that the University’s community will be informed of all bilingual services offered by the University and he will advise and support the University’s Irish clubs and societies. Academic Do’s and Dont’s - Nithe Le déanamh - Le sechaint The change from secondary school to University is a big one. It means no more organised study sessions, pressurising parents or routine homework. With the independence of University comes the independence of studying! To avoid realising that you know more about sleeping than psychology just before exam week, this simple Do’s and Don’ts guide to studying is a good start.

During the year Do try to work a bit; you may not think that you’re absorbing anything from going to your lectures but it’s surprising how much comes back to you when you start revising. Do start the year on a good foot. Get your course outlines and find what you are expected to learn. Find out whether there are assignments, essays, submission dates, etc. and mark them in your diary. If you get to choose subjects, make sure to talk to lectures/advisors before deciding. Do learn to study properly. Check out the Students’ Union website for links to good study guides. Do date and number all your notes and lecture handouts. Coming up to exams, they’ll be easier to organise, and you’ll know exactly what you are missing, if anything. Also, only write on one side of the page - it’s easier to spread out your notes before exams. Do get all your stationery early. The Students’ Union shop is your best bet; it’s less expensive than in town. Do get a reading list from your lecturer and look for second hand books. The Students’ Union runs an online second-hand bookstore at www.su.nuigalway.ie. Books are cheap and of good quality. Do keep your registration form as it has your PIN code for accessing your exam timetable and results online. Don’t stress if you feel you are behind in notes - your lecturers, classmates and blackboard can help you out. Don’t use different notepads for the one subject. It’s messy when trying to study if you have bits of subjects “here and there”. Don’t leave it until the last week to figure out how to use the library and ISS. Go to the orientation - it’s invaluable for knowing how to study. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Lecturers expect them. If you are unwilling to ask them in a packed lecture hall, approach the lecturer after class, or e-mail him/her.

Do set out a study plan early and stick to it. Organise all the things you want to do (e.g. watch the match) and fix your timetable around it. If you can’t motivate yourself, give yourself rewards or incentives to study, e.g. if I do two chapters of Micro Metabolism in this I can tidy my room, woo hoo! (Alternatively, watching Scrubs might be a better reward). Do study in an area which resembles the conditions in an exam hall. If your study place is quiet, you will have a better chance of reproducing information in an exam situation. Do sleep and eat well; as this is scientifically proven to help in an exam situation. Take a 10 minute break every 50 minutes when studying; it’ll help you refresh and concentrate. Do seek help if you need it. Talk to your lecturers coming up to exams. They may not give you direct hints, but they certainly can help solve problems, and possibly show you the best way of studying your subject. You can drop in to Conor in the SU for help on how to prepare for exams or the best ways of studying. Do ask questions in tutorials. They are extremely helpful, and you may feel more confident asking there than in a lecture hall. Do understand the exam regulations and paper format. Read through the regulations about plagiarism, exam hall guidelines, and make sure you plan ahead to get to examination halls. . Do get grinds if you need them; the SU website has a grinds register where you can find tutors across all subject areas. Don’t listen to rumours. If you think there may be a basis, go to the source - your lecturer. Don’t go overboard with the study. Staying up all night before exams will damage you more than help you. Pints of coffee and caffeine tablets are known to cause panic attacks. Don’t talk to the guy who says he hasn’t a hope in the exam. We all know he is a sneaky swot and going to do well, and he’ll panic you! Don’t panic! If you have the work done you’ll be fine. It will be hard to not get the result you want in an exam if you have the work done for it. Try to relax and your exam will run smoothly. Don’t spend from 8.30am until 10pm in the library - it’s not going to be productive. Aim for an 8 or 9 hour day, with good breaks. It’s quality, not quantity that works.

What Happen if...? - Cad a tharlaíonn má..? …I’m unable to sit exams due to sickness, or a bereavement?

You should seek a deferral. This is granted by your College in situations of sickness, if there is a close bereavement to you, or circumstances which can stop you from sitting exams. You will need to provide evidence, e.g. doctor’s cert. On your exam results it will say ‘deferred’. You will be required to sit this exam(s) in the autumn session or in May/June if you’re in first or second arts. There will be no charge for deferred exams.

…I fail an exam or miss an exam?

If you fail or miss one or more exams, you will be required to repeat these in the autumn. There’s a €200 charge no matter how many exams you are repeating. In certain subjects, there are caps on the marks that you can receive in repeats. That means no matter how well you do in a repeat your result will be capped at a certain percentage.

…I fail the year?

Any student wishing to repeat a year of their course will only be able to do so as an ‘internal repeat student. Repeating internally means you may attend lectures and use University facilities; you are officially a student and are registered for the subjects you need to repeat. There are different fees depending on what course you do, to find out more contact the Fees Office. If you have to repeat a year, you do not qualify for the Higher Education Grant or other funding.

…I forget to register or pay my fees late?

You will have to pay a late payment penalty of €200. You will not be registered until you pay the fees and register, and hence you will not be allowed to use University facilities or sit examinations. You could be creating a lot of trouble for yourself regarding registering for subject, seminars, etc.

…I have repeated the year due to sickness?

If you repeat the year you must pay fees. But if you repeat a year due to sickness the Government usually pays the fees on your behalf. You must contact the Fees office if this is the case. You may be required to have relevant documentation.

…I am having difficulty paying undergraduate or repeat fees?

The Student Loans and Fees Committee can waive some or all of your fees, decide to charge you in instalments, or give you more time to pay your fees. You must submit reasons to this committee explaining why you are having difficulties paying. They may ask for supporting documentation. Checking or appealing exam results - Torthaí scrúduithe a cheíceáil nó a achomharc If you happen to find yourself in a situation where you receive a result you don’t think you deserve, you are entitled to appeal. The Examinations Office provides the mechanism to do this.It’s important to understand the difference between getting your exam result checked, and appealing exam results.

Checking Examination Results

If you feel that your exam results are not correct you may ask for them to be checked. This means an examiner will:

• Check all parts of the exam script have been marked; • Check no errors occurred in the recording, collating, and combining of marks; Specifically, this will mean an examiner will go over your script and make sure all marks have been added up and counted correctly, and all sections have been taken into account. The cost of getting results checked is €25 per subject. If you are successful in changing your result, this will be refunded. You must request the check of your results within three weeks of the date of issue of your results (note that this is the date the examinations office releases your results, not when you receive them). Most Colleges don’t officially release students’ results until summer, but can post provisional results on notice boards. Please note that these results are only an indication and are not official, they may change. Students may also view their examination scripts. Your College will arrange a date within ten days of issue of examination results for you to do this. You are not obliged to view your script in advance of checking your results, but we strongly advise it. Besides, reviewing your script may change your perception of the result.

Appealing of results

You may appeal your exam result if you feel that one or more of the following have contributed to an incorrect result:

• I f you feel there was improper conduct in the examination. This includes the exam hall environment (e.g. if there were loud noises in the exam hall, which affected your ability to do the exam) or the exam paper itself (for example, the exam paper was substantially different from your lecturer’s guidelines). • I f you feel the mark awarded was incorrect or inappropriate. You may feel that your answers deserved a better mark or you may feel an examiner unfairly marked you; • I f there was any other circumstance which the Examination Board was not aware of when approving your results, which could affect your performance in your exam such as bereavement, medical or personal circumstances. You may need to provide evidence. The cost for this is €60 per subject, which will be returned if you successfully have your results changed. Unlike getting your result checked, you must look at your script before filing an appeal form. Only in exceptional circumstances will this requirement be waived. You must request the appeal of your examination results within three weeks of the issue of autumn and semester one results and within four weeks of the issue of the summer results. Support Centres - Seirbhísí Tacaíochta SUMS

The SUMS Centre is a FREE drop-in support centre for all NUI Galway undergraduate students. The primary purpose of SUMS is to assist students with any aspect of Mathematics or Mathematics related subjects. SUMS is open to all NUIG students, not just those studying for Mathematics Degrees. SUMS aims to provide a comfortable, informal environment where students can come and study at their own pace, with expert tutors on hand to offer individual help, if required. Academic Writing Centre

The Writing Centre is a free drop-in facility to help students with their essays and to generally improve their writing skills. Sessions are held on a one-to-one basis by peer tutors in a relaxed, friendly environment. During term time the centre is located in the library Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11am-1pm and in the evenings Monday to Thursday from 7pm-9pm. Plagiarism - Bradaíl Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined by the Academic Council of NUI Galway as “the act of copying, including or directly quoting from, the work of another without adequate acknowledgement”. To some extent, this has always been an issue in third level education, but the matter is more pressing today because of the ease of access to information on the Internet. Plagiarism is dishonest, unethical and unacceptable. In order to safeguard its long established reputation and the integrity of its programmes, NUI Galway has adopted a proactive approach to the prevention and detection of plagiarism. Plagiarism may be found to have occurred if it is established that a student has copied material from a book, journal, website, fellow student or any other source, and then includes this material in a submission for an assignment or project of any kind without giving suitable credit to the original creator of the material. Plagiarism, when found to occur, is subject to the University Code of Practice for Dealing with Plagiarism which can be found on the University website at: www.nuigalway.ie/ codeofconduct. The penalties for plagiarism vary, but include the possibility of expulsion from the University in extreme cases

James Hardiman Library - Leabharlann Shéamais Uí Argadáin During your time at NUI Galway, you will use the Library for a range of services. You can study there, borrow course books, search the internet and watch DVDs, There is WiFi access throughout the Library. The Library’s main aim is to provide a welcoming and student-centred environment, whether you visit the Library or use its resources via a computer.

Library Collections

The Library collections are spread over three floors, with a Nursing and Midwifery Library extension to the rear of the Main Library. The collections include books, journals, newspapers, microfilm, archives, DVDs, and more. Many resources are available in electronic form.

Using the Library

Your student ID card is your Library card, so you can use the Library immediately you are registered with the University. Fulltime undergraduate students can borrow up to five books for a week, and part-time undergraduates five books for two weeks.

The Electronic Library

The Library has a huge range of international databases, with access to about 30,000 electronic journals, plus more than 350,000 electronic books. You can search all of these resources from the home page of the Library’s website. If you need any help, please ask at the Customer Services Desk.

Off-Campus Access

If you want to access the databases or electronic journals from outside the University, you can use the off-campus access service. To use the service, you will need your student ID number and your Campus Account password. Library Training - If you want to use the Library’s resources effectively, you’ll benefit from training sessions offered by Subject and Research Librarians. There is a wide range of courses throughout each semester, covering topics such as literature searching and managing your references. Library Tours - You’ll gain by taking a Library tour, during which Library staff will introduce you to the Library’s services. You’ll find life a lot easier with a little Library know-how. You can also take a self-guided tour – just pick up an electronic wand at the Customer Services Desk. Lost Passwords

You will receive details of you Campus Account at registration. If you've lost or forgotten your password, a secure, self-service password reset facility called Campus Account Self Service (CASS) is available at https://cass.nuigalway.ie

Printing

You first need to add print credit to your account. You can purchase print credit online at https://printcredit.nuigalway.ie. You can also purchase print credit at print kiosk, located in the Print Release Room 125A (near Arts and Science PC suite), in the front foyer of the Cairnes building and in the James Hardiman Library.

Getting Help

For some of the smaller problems you may be having with software, etc,. check out the ISS website for simple guides. If this isn’t sufficient, consider taking the “Introduction to PC Suites” course, which is available free of charge. The one-hour course covers logging in and logging out, file management, printing and StudentMail. Call into the ISS Service Desk to register.

Reporting broken PCs.

If ISS are unaware that a computer in a PC suite is broken, they cannot fix it. Please report all faults at https://servicedesk.nuigalway.ie or contact the ISS Service Desk.

Mobile Computing

The NUIGWiFi service is available for students with their own laptop. All computers that connect to the campus network (includes WiFi) must have anti-virus software installed. Anti-virus software is available form the ISS website.

PC Suite Opening Hours

General access PC Suites are open from 08.30 to 22.00 (Monday-Friday). Some suites are open at weekends and over holiday periods. Full details are available on the ISS website.

Importance of Backing up Stuff

You are responsible for your own files, whether they are stored on the network or elsewhere. Remember to always keep more than one copy of your work. Use memory sticks or CDs/DVDs to back-up important work.

Software

Not all software is available in all PC suites. Standard software e.g. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, SPSS and EndNote is available in all PC Suites, while subject-specific software is only available in certain suites. Full details are available on the ISS website.

You are eligible to apply under this scheme if you: • are starting an approved course for the first time; • a re a mature student, entering in order to complete (or pursue, in the case of postgraduate) an approved course at undergraduate or postgraduate level for the first time; • h ave attended, but not completed, an approved course and are returning following a break of at least five years in order to pursue an approved course at the same level; • h ave entered an approved course in Ireland prior to the academic year and are now entering an approved course outside of Ireland, for the first time. To be eligible for a grant under this scheme, you must also fulfil the following conditions relating to residence, age, academic attainments, means and nationality.

Residence

Your parents or guardians or, you yourself if you are an independent mature candidate, must have been ordinarily resident in the administrative area of the local authority from 1 October prior to applying for the grant. The local authority has discretion to waive this requirement in exceptional circumstances.

You must be at least 17 years of age on 1st January of the year following your application. If you are studying abroad for the year (e.g. an Erasmus year) you will be entitled to the non-adjacent fee.

Where two or more children (or the candidate’s parent) are attending an approved course in third-level or further education, the income limits are increased by increments as follows:

• €4,980 for two children • €9,960 for three children, continuing by increments of €4,980 for each further child.

Top-up’ grants for disadvantaged students

Some disadvantaged students can qualify for “top-up” grants if they qualify for the ordinary maintenance grant for the academic year 2011/2012 and their total reckonable income for the year ending 31st December 2010 has not exceeded €22,703, net of Qualified Child Increases and standard exclusions. For students, including mature students, who are assessed on parent(s)/guardian income, their parent(s)/guardian must, on 31st December 2010, have been:

• Claiming long-term social welfare payments, or • Claiming Family Income Supplement, or • Participating in designated programmes, e.g. FÁS training programme. For students who assessed on their own income, on 31st December 2010, the student must have been receiving an eligible (long-term) social welfare payment (including long-term Unemployment Assistance), or Family Income Supplement or participating in a designated programme. For students who are assessed on the income of their spouse/partner, on 31st December 2010, the spouse or partner must have been receiving an eligible (long term) social welfare payment or Family Income Supplement or participating in a designated programme. Tax Relief on Fees

You may be able to claim tax relief on tuition fees paid for approved Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. Lists of courses and colleges approved for relief each year are published on the Revenue website www.revenue.ie You can claim tax relief as long as you have actually paid the fees, either on your own behalf or on behalf of another person. You cannot claim tax relief on:

• Registration, examination or administration fees • A ny part of the tuition fees that is met directly or indirectly by a grant, a scholarship or otherwise, e.g. where fees are reimbursed by an employer. To apply, collect a form from your local Tax Office or download it from the Revenue website. Your Students’ Union and Postgraduates - Larchéimithe Every student who registers as a student in NUI Galway automatically becomes a member of NUI Galway Students’ Union. As a postgraduate student, you’re entitled to the same services and representation as undergraduate students. Along with the Students’ Union Executive Officers, there are also postgraduate specific representatives. Each September Postgraduate Faculty Representatives from amongst the postgrads in each Faculty are elected, to sit on each faculty. The Students’ Union will organise elections for these positions. In February, postgraduate reps are elected to Academic Council (2 members) and Governing Authority. These postgraduate reps are Postgrad students elected by fellow postgrads. They sit on many committees relevant to Postgrad issues such as the Research Committee, Library Committee, Quality Committee and others. If you are interested in running for any of these positions, please contact the Students’ Union. We can only work on issues that are brought to our attention. That is why it’s very important to fill postgraduate seats on University committees so that we can work to address the matters that affect you. You pay our wages, so make use of us! The NUI Galway Dean of Graduate Studies, Dr Pat Morgan, is responsible for the overall management of the operation of University postgraduate research programmes. Things To Do - Rudaí le déanamh Flirt FM 101.3 Flirt FM 101.3 is the award-winning student radio station for Galway city. Part of a 23 station national network of community radio stations, we’ve been broadcasting from NUI Galway since September 1995. With two paid staff, the station is composed of up to 120 student volunteers (this is where you come in!) On air weekdays throughout the year, we have a full-time term schedule of 100 hours, and a reduced academic holiday schedule of 70 hours. You can expect extended coverage of important campus events from the SU elections to event weeks and student issues. We have a dedicated news site at flirtnewsfeed.com to help you keep up with campus happenings. So what do we sound like? Well, certainly not your average station. Flirt FM is by, of and for the third-level students of Galway; providing an alternative to locally available commercial radio, in fact we’re the only dedicated alternative station outside of Dublin. SIN Newspaper - Nuachtán SIN Sin consists of a fortnightly newspaper and a sister website - www.sin.ie - and is the best way to find out what’s happening in NUI Galway throughout the year. Both the newspaper and website are funded by NUI Galway Students’ Union and advertising, with both enjoying the freedom of an Editor who is independent of the Union.

Sin Website

The online version of Sin at www.sin.ie is updated regularly. With previews and reviews from society, club and entertainment events, Sin is a great place to find out something to do or to just pass away a few hours reading older stories. Added to this, it’s also the most up-to-date source of student news in NUI Galway and on a national level. The website, with separate sections on entertainment, sport, features and news also features electronic versions of the paper so those of you who aren’t on campus can still read Sin. Like the Sin newspaper, reporters are always needed to keep the website fresh, current and up-to-date. As Galway’s only student newspaper, Sin provides the best opportunity for students to get involved in journalism, photography, design, and other areas of newspaper production. But why contribute? Well there are lots of reasons: there’s the chance to gain experience that will prove valuable and rewarding later on in your career, but also in many other aspects of life; you’ll meet new people, many of whom share some of your interests. There’s also the chance to work with a great group of contributors who’ll teach you invaluable information about the media; Sin provides its contributors with a wide audience, and finally you get your name in print, something that people in print journalism value the most. Sin has a print run of 6000, is out every two weeks, on average is about 32 pages long, and is distributed on campus. To get involved is easy, meetings are held every week, and all are welcome. Inter-College Games 2011

NUI Galway proudly introduces the inaugural Inter-College games in October 2011. This competition will involve the five colleges of the University and they will compete against each other for the prized Intercollege cup. A series of blitz’s and introductory events will run for approximately two weeks beginning in early October. There will be scoreboards placed throughout campus for people to keep track of how their college is doing and encouraging friendly rivalry! You earn points for your college just through participating, i.e. the more events you’re involved in, the more points you earn! This is a new competition open to students of all years and courses. Even if you haven’t got involved before, now is a fantastic opportunity to have the craic, meet new people and try new activities. Keep your eyes peeled for posters with further info!

Sports Clubs - Clubanna Spóirt Indoor Clubs Archery

Badminton

When you arrived, you probably brought the essentials. However, there are a few things that are sometimes forgotten. The cost of College can often come as a shock to students and parents alike and will vary from year to year. Being a student is like having a full time job, but without the benefits of a pay package. Not every student can ask their parents to support them and not every student receives the Grant, but it is recommended that every student should work during the summer to have money to get them through the following term of College. Whatever the source of your income, it won’t last you past Halloween if you aren’t careful. This is where the ancient art of budgeting becomes a necessary skill that will serve you well for the rest of your life. Below is a general guide of how much you will need to survive for one month in college. Consider how grants, parental support, and part time jobs affect your budget and remember to put money aside if you plan to go travelling next summer. € Accommodation (rented)

It’s important to manage your resources well no matter how scarce they are! There are many temptations and the food budget can often be diverted into the socialising budget! Getting the balance right to stay healthy and safe is certainly a big challenge. Remember to stick to your budget! Finance - Airgead Financial Assistance Students Assistance Fund

Some students find themselves experiencing financial hardship despite penny counting during their time in the University. If you find yourself in this situation, and cannot reasonably obtain funds elsewhere, financial support is available. The purpose of the Student Assistance Fund (SAF) is to tackle disadvantage by enabling students to fully benefit from their studies. Costs such as childcare, academic materials, rent, heat/light, food, travel, medical/dental expenses, those arising from family breakdown or bereavement can be considered for support. No money will be given to assist with fees, registration or debt. The application process usually begins in October and you are eligible if your course here is at least one year long and will lead to either an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification. Other supports available to third level students include Higher Education Grants awarded by local authorities (County Councils). Information on these grants is available in the Academic section elsewhere in this diary.

Social Welfare

You are not entitled to the dole if you are in full-time education. However, mature students may be entitled to a Back to Education Allowance. Where you are under 19 and in full-time education, your parents are still entitled to claim child benefit for you. Students with children may be entitled to Child Benefit and One-Parent Family Allowance depending on their circumstances. If you are having difficulty obtaining maintenance from your child’s other parent you should contact your Community Welfare Officer. Rent supplement is available for those who cannot provide for the cost of their accommodation from their own resources. If you are concerned about the impact of third level education on benefits you receive you can contact your social welfare office. The nearest offices are located in the Hynes Building off Eyre Square and over the Aldi store in Westside.

Medical Card

A medical card enables the bearer to receive certain health services free of charge. Each Health Service Executive Area issues cards. Full-time students aged 16-25 who are financially dependent on their parents will only be entitled to a medical card if their parents hold a medical card. A student in receipt of Disability Allowance will generally be entitled to a medical card. Financially independent students who satisfy a means test may be entitled to a medical card. If you have a medical card, you are entitled to free GP (family doctor) services; prescribed drugs and medicines (with some exceptions); in-patient public hospital services; out-patient services; dental, optical and aural services; medical appliances; maternity. You can get an application form from the local Social Welfare Office. Don’t forget that most services in the Student Health Unit in Áras na Mac Léinn are free of charge!

Finance - Airgead Employment Rights A part time employee should not be treated less favourably than a comparable full time employee. Your employer must provide you with a written statement of terms and conditions relating to your employment within two months of commencing employment. Whether your employer provides you with a reference is a matter of discretion.

Payment

An employee who has any work experience in any two years since turning age 18 is entitled to €8.65 per hour. Employees who are in their first year of employment since turning 18 are entitled to €6.92 per hour. Employees who are in their second year of employment since turning 18 are entitled to €7.79 per hour. Employees who are under 18 years of age are entitled to €6.06 per hour. You are entitled to receive a pay slip with every payment of wages. This pay slip should show: gross wage, the nature and amount of each deduction. An employer may deduct the following from an employee’s wage: any deduction required or authorized by law (e.g. PAYE or PRSI), any deduction authorised by the terms of an employee’s contract (e.g. pension contributions, or particular till shortages), or any deduction agreed to in writing in advance by the employee.

Holidays

As a part-time or casual employee, you earn holidays at the rate of 8% of hours worked, up to a maximum of four working weeks in a year. If not already included in the rate of pay, employees are generally entitled to paid time off in lieu or a premium payment for Sunday working. To earn Public Holiday Pay you must have worked a total of 40 hours over a five-week period ending immediately before the public holiday to qualify.

Finance - Airgead Breaks

Employees are entitled to a 15-minute break after 4.5 hours have been worked, and a 30 minute break when a total of 6 hours have been worked. Payment for breaks is not a statutory entitlement. Sixteen and seventeen year olds must receive a 30 minutes break if working more than 4.5 hours. They must receive 2 days off in every 7, which shall, as far as is practicable, be consecutive. They may not work more than 8 hours a day and may not work before 06:00 or after 22:00.

Notice

If you have been in continuous employment for between 13 weeks and two years, you will be obliged to provide your employer with one week’s notice of termination of employment. However, if you have agreed in a contract to give a greater amount of notice, you will go by the amount specified in the contract.

Unfair Dismissal

An unfair dismissal includes one which results from one or more of the following:

• a n employee’s trade union membership or activities, either outside working hours or at those times during working hours when permitted by the employer. • religious or political opinions. • race, colour, sexual orientation, age or membership of the Traveller Community • legal proceedings against an employer where an employee is a party or a witness. • unfair selection for redundancy. • pregnancy, giving birth or breastfeeding or any matters connected with pregnancy or birth • a vailing of rights under legislation to maternity leave, adoptive leave, carers leave, parental or force majeure leave

Complaints

Complaints regarding breaches of your rights can be made in confidence to the National Employment Rights Authority. The Department’s Inspectors, who have powers to enter places of work and examine records, do not reveal without the consent of the person making the complaint, whether the inspection is a routine one or is a result of a complaint. FLAC the Free Legal Advice Centre offers free legal information clinics on a weekly basis for students who have legal queries of any kind. These clinics run on Tuesday evenings during term time in Áras na Mac Léinn from 6pm to 7.30pm. All information exchanged is strictly confidential.

Going Out - Imeachtaí Sóisialta Personal Safety

Even if you are an eight foot tall body builder, you are still a target for assault, mugging or a drunk driver. Watch your back. There are a lot of things you can do that will make your environment a lot safer.

• Avoid isolated and darkened areas, both day and night. Take the busy route (especially if you are alone) • Tell somebody where you’re going and when you will return • C arry a panic alarm. You can purchase a small and effective alarm to put on your key chain for just a few euro from the Students’ Union shop. • Walk facing traffic • Don’t display your jewellery, i-pod, wallet etc. if you can help it • Don’t carry more cash on your person than you need • I f you think you are being followed, go to the nearest place there are people, even a private house, and ring the Gardaí • Don’t walk home alone at night even if you are Chuck Norris • Never take a lift from somebody you don’t know • N ever walk along the canal, river or sea while “under the influence”. For more information on water safety visit www.iws.ie • Trust your instincts If you are assaulted, help is available 24 hours a day. Go to the hospital and get a check up. Get in contact with the Gardaí and report the incident. If you want, make an appointment with the Chaplain or a counsellor to talk about what happened. If you decide you want to talk to someone at a later stage, don’t hesitate to contact these services. If you are unable to attend college as a result of injuries sustained, you should contact your lecturers. The Students’ Union Vice-President / Welfare Officer can help you do this if you like. In any case involving sexual attack, washing, changing your clothes or cleaning up the immediate vicinity may destroy evidence. You may want to contact the Gardaí first. If for any reason you need to contact campus security, they are there to help. You can call extension 3333 internally or (091) 493333 from an outside line. If necessary, they can put you onto the Gardaí. They can also help you if you have been assaulted.

On the Road

Whether you are a pedestrian, cyclist, passenger or driver you need to take care of yourself and others on the roads. Follow the rules of the road as they are there to protect you and those around you. We want you all to arrive alive so follow the advice of the Road Safety Authority at www.rsa.ie. One of the first things to do on arrival at NUI Galway is to save some local taxi/hackney numbers on your phone. If you have any queries or complaints about taxis or hackneys you should contact the SU Welfare Officer or go directly to the Taxi Regulator at www.taxireg.ie.

Going Out - Imeachtaí Sóisialta Alcohol

If you want to drink, do, and if you don’t want to, don’t, but make sure it is your decision. Respect other people’s right not to drink. If you decide to drink, then don’t let it take over and do your best to stay in control. This protects your safety and that of the people around you. It’s also good for your cash flow and health. Ways of doing this include:

• Eat well before you drink • Start drinking late • D rink no more than a half-pint/measure of spirits/glass of wine per hour. That’s as fast as your body can handle • “Same again.” When you mix your drinks they react badly to each other making you feel awful. • Drink from the glass, not straws • T ake a glass of water or soft drink between some drinks. This dilutes the toxins and reduces the dehydration that will cause the hangover headache • Avoid drinking games • Three or four drinks should be enough. Less if your tolerance is low • D on’t drink more than ten pints a week if you are male or seven if you are a woman. (Two measures of spirits and two small glasses of wine match a pint on this scale) • Never leave your drink unattended If you often end up having too much, drink alone or crave alcohol, try to cut down or maybe talk to the Students’ Union VicePresident / Welfare Officer in confidence to see what supports are on offer. AlAnon meet on campus and the counselling service includes a drug and alcohol counsellor. Never leave a friend who is very drunk alone, no matter how obnoxious they are. Try to make sure they don’t have anything more to drink and get them a glass of water. Keep them warm and get them home safe. If someone has been vomiting, don’t let them sleep it off until this has passed by at least half an hour. If they pass out or are in danger, you should notify staff (where applicable) and get them to the hospital. If someone is not conscious lie them on their side with their top knee bent and top arm over their head while you wait for emergency services.

Illegal Drugs

Most drugs have positive and negative effects as well as potential risks. The risks increase dramatically if you mix your drugs. The positive effects usually include some type of buzz, euphoria or relaxation. The negative effects usually kick in on the come down. This tends to be greater than the initial lift. You also risk addiction, contaminated substances and of course getting caught. Hefty fines and/or imprisonment are the penalties. Different drugs affect different people differently. If you decide to use them, make sure you look into the potential consequences and minimise the risks. Misinformation and drug misuse can have fatal consequences. You’re hungry, you don’t have the cash to eat out and you’re sick of beans on toast. On top of that, you’re off form because you’re not getting the right stuff into you. This can mean your sporting, academic, health and social life aren’t exactly thriving. Check the Welfare section of our website for some simple, tasty recipes

Tips for shopping on budget • Make a list and stick to it!

• Shop once a week for everything and don’t shop on an empty stomach! • Stock up on starchy food like cereal, bread, pasta, noodles and rice. • If you use frozen vegetables there’s no waste. • The cheapest vegetables are normally cabbage, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli. • L ook out for special offers, but don’t bother with ‘three-for-twos’ unless you really want it, because you won’t be saving money if it goes off and you have to throw it out. • L ean mince beef or chicken fillets can be expensive but there’s no waste, so overall they can be good value. • Try doing your shopping in the bigger stores - they tend to be cheaper.

Some simple DIY Okay, we know you’re not Bob the Builder but a little goes a long way especially when it’s your hot neighbour having the trouble. Remember, don’t try to be a hero - call your landlord or agency immediately if you have any emergencies.

Your own little tool box!

Have a quick rummage around at home for the following handy items: screwdrivers (flathead and crosshead), claw hammer, pen knife, pliers, spanner, spare fuses, screws, nails and duct tape (see the section on “Borrowing stuff from home”).

Repairs Turning the house supply of water off

To turn off your house supply, you need to locate your stop valve, which will usually be under the kitchen sink or a downstairs floorboard by the front door. Ask your landlord when you move in. Turn it clockwise to turn it off, and anticlockwise to turn it on. Remember “righty tighty, lefty loosey”. By turning this off, you haven’t cut off the water supply to taps in the house, as the cold water cistern will still be full.

Staying In - Imeachtaí Sóisialta sa Bhaile Turning off the taps

The pipes to turn off the taps have a red/orange handle coming off them and may be located in either the airing cupboard (hot) or the attic (cold) and sometimes both will be located in the same place. Turn both handles clockwise to turn them off.

How do I unblock a sink/drain

Pour hot (not boiling) water down the plughole, and then use a plunger. Next, put on protective gloves and carefully pour soda crystals (caustic soda) down the plughole, using a length of stiff wire ( a wire hanger unfurled always works a charm) to dislodge any stubborn blockages. If this doesn’t work, contact your landlord. Make a habit of regularly pouring drain cleaner down your drains to prevent grease sticking.

The toilet won’t stop flushing

Lift up the cistern cover and pull the plastic float as high up as possible to stop the water. Then phone your landlord and ask them to send a plumber round.

Sticky drawers

Take the drawers out and sandpaper down the wear marks to a smooth edge. Rub candle wax on the surface. Repeat inside the chest of drawers.

Electrics Re-setting the electricity ‘trip’ switch

‘Trip’ switches can be set off for loads of different reasons. This means that if you lose power in your house, it may well be the trip switch. Your landlord should have told you where the fuse box is (usually the hallway or under the stairs). Have a quick check of the appliances in the house first and see if you can find the problematic one. If you don’t find it, open the cover of the fuse box to expose the trip switches. Check which switches have been tripped to the OFF position and put them back to the ON position. If it trips again then you should unplug all appliances and start plugging them in again one by one to find out which appliance is setting it off. When you find the problematic appliance you should have it checked by an electrician. In the meantime don’t use it and make sure everyone else in the house doesn’t either.

How do I change a fuse?

Release the central screw that holds the two halves of the plug together, lever out the old fuse and replace it with a new one of the same amperage. Never use a fuse of different amperage. Put the plug back together.

Most accidents with electricity in the home are caused by faulty or incorrectly wired plugs. The correct wiring of a plug is extremely important for your own safety. Please follow these guidelines carefully. They cover the two most common types of plug used in this country - the 3-pin, 13 Amp plug and the 2-pin, 16 Amp side-earth plug.

1. Remove the cover and loosen the screws of the cord grip and the brass terminals. 2. Measure the flex against the plug and strip the outer covering back as far as the cord grip, taking care not to cut through the coloured insulation on the wire strands. 3. If the coloured cables have to be trimmed, ensure that they are long enough to reach the terminals without straining: allow for a little slack on the green/yellow earth wire. 4. Strip about 10 mm (1/2 inch) of the coloured insulation from each core. • B ROWN to the LIVE (L) terminal; BLUE to the NEUTRAL (N) GREEN/YELLOW to the EARTH (E) terminal. Note: Some foreign appliances use different live colourings. If in doubt, ask an electrician. 5. Pass the flex under the loosened cord grip, 6. Twist the exposed wire strands of each core between the finger and thumb so that there are no loose strands. Double the twisted bare wire back on itself for about 5 mm and insert it fully into the hole in the appropriate terminal. Tighten the terminal screw firmly on the wire. 7. Tighten the cord grip screws, making sure that the cord grip is clamped on the full outer covering of the cable and not on the inner cores. 8. Replace the cover. Note: If the appliance has a moulded plug fitted, this cannot be opened or re-wired. If it is damaged or faulty, it should be cut off and a new plug fitted as described above. It’s important that you know the basics. You are entitled by law to a rent book and lease. You can get these in the Students’ Union Office or on-line at www.su.nuigalway.ie if you don’t have them already. Make sure to know the details of the lease especially with respect to overnight guests, bin charges and any television license. If something goes wrong, which it easily can, this will make your position stronger. You can avoid most problems if you make an inventory list when you move in, noting any damage to the premises, and get the landlord to sign this. Don’t forget that your conduct in your residence is something which is covered by the University Code of Conduct.

You Must:

• pay the rent and any other specified charges including TV license! • make sure no damage above normal wear and tear occurs to the accommodation; • notify the landlord of any repair requirements • allow access for repairs to be carried out and by appointment for routine inspections; • keep the landlord informed of the identity of the occupants • not engage in or allow anti-social behavior • not act, or allow visitors to act in a way that would invalidate the landlord’s insurance; • not cause the landlord to be in breach of statutory obligations • n ot alter, improve, assign, sub-let or change the use of the dwelling without written consent from the landlord

Staying In - Imeachtaí Sóisialta sa Bhaile Without a Fixed-Term Lease

The landlord can terminate without specifying grounds during the first 6 months, but once a tenancy has lasted 6 months, the landlord will be able to terminate that tenancy only if any of the following apply:

• the tenant does not comply with the obligations of the tenancy • the dwelling is no longer suited to the occupants accommodation needs (e.g. overcrowded) • the landlord intends to sell the dwelling in the next 3 months • the landlord requires the dwelling for own or family member occupation • the landlord intends to refurbish the dwelling • the landlord intends to change the business use of the dwelling The following is the time to be given for a notice to quit:

• Less than 6 months : 28 days • 6 or more months but less than 1 year: 35 days • 1 year or more but less than 2 years: 42 days

Fixed-Term Lease

Remember that if you agree to stay until the end of May or until another stipulated time, you cannot contract out of this. Be aware that if you leave before this date, you may be breaking your contract and are liable to lose your deposit at least. Remember a contract doesn’t necessarily have to be written down; a verbal agreement is legally binding! You also cannot use your deposit as the final months rent. Some landlords might let you but they don’t have to.

Digs

Your entitlements depend on the agreement you made with the landlord. You should, if possible, get a written agreement stating what exactly you will receive for your money. If the landlord tells you before you move in that there is a curfew and you agree to move in then you have to stick to the rules set down. There are no laws as to whether you have to give your room to a son or daughter at weekends or holidays. You should try and set all the rules down at the beginning. Being LGBT on Campus

The experience of being LGBT on campus depends on the person themselves; it depends on how open they are and how comfortable they are with their sexuality or gender. The atmosphere in college can play a large part too. Some LGBT students find that “coming out” in their particular situation would be unnecessary hassle and possibly even dangerous. This does not however infer that the person is ashamed of being LGBT. You should come out because YOU want to, not because someone else thinks you should. GiGsoc is NUI Galway’s LGBT society, which provides a safe place for LGBT students to come and meet and to socialise in a fun atmosphere. The society also runs educational events throughout the year. The society can prove to be a source of support, understanding and friendship for LGBT students. www.gigsoc.nuigalway.ie If you encounter any kind of discrimination and harassment, whether it is spoken or unspoken, physical or sexual, from anyone in college, students or staff you do not have to stand for it. Sex - Gnéas Sexual Violence

Any sexual act without consent constitutes rape or sexual assault. Both parties must be sure that they have the full consent of the other(s). If a person is ‘out of it’ on alcohol or another substance, legally they cannot be considered to have given consent. Dancing, dating or going home with someone does not change any of this. Both Men and Women can be raped or sexually assaulted. Rape or sexual assault is usually committed by someone the victim knows and in a familiar location. Each individual always has the right to choose with whom they will or will not have sexual relations, or the extent and nature of the sexual relations. The most common rape drug in Ireland is alcohol. Don’t leave your drink unattended. Always be careful not to get drunk in the presence of someone you don’t fully trust and do not accept drink off them. Remember personal alarms are available from the Students’ Union Shop. Acts of rape and sexual assault are never the victim’s fault. Sometimes the victim may be too embarassed or humiliated to talk about their experience. This can be a difficult burden to carry alone. The Galway Rape Crisis Centre offers support to both men and women. They offer support in reporting to the Gardaí if required. The centre offers counselling for people who have experienced rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment. The Rape Crisis Centre also offers counselling to adult victims of Child Sexual Abuse.www.galwayrcc.org

Sexual Harassment can include

• Physical - Unnecessary touching, pinching or brushing against another; assault; coercing sexual intercourse. • V erbal - Unwelcome sexual advances, demands for sexual favours, suggestive remarks, innuendoes or lewd comments. • N on-Verbal - Displays of pornographic, or sexually suggestive pictures and objects; leering. whistling or sexually suggestive gestures.

If you encounter sexual harassment in the University, you may report it to your dean, head of department, the registrar, Student Services or the Students’ Union Vice-President / Welfare Officer. You can also see the student counsellors in confidence and free of charge. More information about the student counselling service is available in the Health section elsewhere in this diary.

Sexual Health

No matter what precautions are taken, sex is never totally safe. Condoms can slip or tear and some Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) like genital warts can be passed on from skin-to-skin contact. Up to 75% of unplanned pregnancies result from contraceptive failure, mainly condoms. However, chances of pregnancy or getting an STI plummet when simple precautions are taken. This can prolong your sex life!

Contraception

A woman can still get pregnant:

• If a man pulls out “in time” • During her period • If it is her first time • At any time in her menstrual cycle • In every position • If she washes the inside of her vagina after sex

Sex - Gnéas There are a variety of methods of contraception available including barrier methods, hormonal methods and natural. No method of contraception is 100% effective so make sure you don’t increase the risk further by incorrect use. Some methods are much more reliable than others. Some contraceptives have side effects which depend on the person. No matter what method you choose you need to see a GP to ensure it is right for you. In emergencies the morning after pill is available from the Student Health Unit or any pharmacy. This should be taken within 72 hours of having sex, i.e. the sooner it’s taken, the more effective it is.

STIs

Many people worry about the prospect of an unplanned pregnancy but may neglect to consider the real possibility of getting an infection. It’s hugely important to protect against STI’s and this can only be done with the use of a condom (either male or female) for all intimate sexual contact. Any sexual contact (anal, oral, digital) can transmit an STI so being a virgin does not mean you don’t have or can’t get an STI. Urinating after sex can help prevent urinary tract infections, which condoms do not prevent. There are 25 different types of Sexually Transmitted Infections, which include chlamydia, syphilis, gonorrhoea and pubic lice (which can be passed even when a condom is used). Many people with STI’s do not display symptoms. It is likely that you won’t even know you have one and yet it can have long term complications such as infertility and cancer. You can also pass it on despite having no symptoms. The symptoms which may or may not accompany STIs include:

• abnormal discharge • irregular periods/staining • pain on passing urine • lower abdominal pain • an ulcer or wart on your genital skin • pain during intercourse If you are sexually active you should have regular sexual health checks. You can make an appointment in the Student Health Unit, through your GP or at a GUM (Genito-Urinary Medicine) clinic. For more details on STIs, see the Students’ Union website at www.su.nuigalway.ie. Condoms are available for free from the Students’ Union Vice-President / Welfare Office all year round.

Unplanned Pregnancy

Every time that you have heterosexual sex you could become pregnant (or in the case of a man, you may impregnate someone). Should this happen, support is available for both men and women. If the due date for your period has passed, it is only then that you should do a test. The reason for this is if you do the test before your due date there’s a chance that you may get a positive result even if you are not pregnant as the hormone which is tested will be quite high before your period. You can have a test done in the Student Health Unit. Should you miss labs etc. due to morning sickness you can get a letter from the Health Unit and give it to the secretary of the Department.

Support

The Positive Options campaign is run by the Crisis Pregnancy Agency which aims to make more women of all ages aware of the help that is available to them should they have an unplanned pregnancy. The campaign does not pass judgment or push values onto people. It is concerned with the provision of accurate and non-directive information about the options available. Health - Sláinte Student Health Unit

The Student Health Unit (located in Áras na Mac Léinn) provides a totally confidential GP service. Most services provided by the health unit are free. Upon entering the Student Health Unit for the first time, you will be required to fill out a form. Information on the form will only be seen by Health Unit staff to note your medical history.

Nurses

There are two nurses in the Student Health Unit, Nurse Edel Quinn and Nurse Ann Kenny. They are available from 09:15 12:30 on a walk-in triage basis and from 14:30 - 16:30 by appointment.

Doctors

The Student Health Unit runs a daily doctors’ surgery. Doctors are available from 09:15 - 12:30 and from 14:30 - 16:30 by appointment given out on a Monday morning at 09.15 only or by referral from a nurse.

Appointments

For routine appointments e.g. repeat prescriptions, a minimum of two days notice is required. The time may be extended during busy times. To make an appointment, just telephone or call into the Student Health Unit. Please notify the Student Health Unit if you no longer require your appointment, as there are a limited number of appointments each day. Failure to do so will mean another student needing the doctor will miss the opportunity and the doctor’s time will be wasted.

Sick notes

If you have been to see the doctor during your illness, you may receive a sick note. There is no charge for this. However, the Health Unit can not issue medical certificates if you are not seen on the day of your illness.

Health - Sláinte Stress

The best way to beat stress is by doing something you enjoy . Always make sure you set time aside to relax and do something for yourself. Winding down and taking a break is important. It is standard maintenance, the same way you eat to counter hunger you need to relax to counter stress.

Your Mental Health - Stress

There are countless ways to relax and different methods suit different people. Be careful not to turn to alcohol, cigarettes or drugs if you’re feeling frustrated as this can lead to dependence or make you feel worse. Here are some good ways to prevent and relieve stress:

• talk to people

• listen to music

• go out with friends

• eat a variety of food

• watch an upbeat movie

• get enough sleep

• play a sport

• breathe slowly and deeply

• go for a walk If stress ever gets too much you can talk to one of the chaplains, counsellors, Student Health Unit staff or to the Students’ Union Vice-President / Welfare Officer.

Your Mental Health – Depression

We all feel down at times, that is normal. However, if the feeling is persisting for more than two weeks then maybe you need some support. It is possible you are suffering from depression. This common illness affects a huge number of young people. It affects your thoughts, feelings, physical health and behaviour day after day. As it is so common, extensive support services have been developed and are available for you when you need them. Using the available services is not a sign of weakness. Depression is not caused by any one factor. Some life conditions such as extreme stress or grief may act as a trigger. Sometimes depression can occur even when life is going well. Depression can affect anyone! Depression can really take its toll on us. Some indicators may include:

• Fatigue, Slowness

• Anxiety

• Feeling sad, depressed

• Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much

• Aggressive behavior

• Significant weight changes

• Boredom

• Social Withdrawal

• Low self-esteem

• Delusions

• Physical Symptoms

• Suicidal thoughts and/or actions

• Cutting

• Headaches

• Joint Pains

• Changes in eating patterns

If several of these symptoms are present for two weeks or longer, you should consult your GP. If you think that you may suffer from depression then it is advisable to talk to someone as soon as possible. Talking to a trusted friend, a parent, a doctor or medical professional will be a step in the right direction.

Health - Sláinte Helping Others

When a friend seems low, it is important to let them know you care. One way to help is to go for a walk together. It may seem simple, but it helps make a connection. If your friend is falling behind in college then you need to have a frank discussion of what they need to do and what you can do to help them. The most important thing that you can do for your friend is tell them about the help that is available to them in the University. Also offer to go with them to look for help. Should you be interested in doing a suicide intervention course (ASIST Course) provided by the HSE you can contact the Students’ Union for more information.

Counsellors & Chaplains

You can talk to a counsellor if you are feeling down in general. You don’t need to know what is wrong or be depressed. The counsellors are trained professionals who can help people with: work-related stress; Study problems; concentration difficulties; examination anxiety; loneliness, shyness; coping with personal loss, grief; sexual conflicts; uncertainty about personal worth; other personal problems. There is also a specialist drugs and alcohol counsellor. Nobody will know that you are seeing a counsellor unless you choose to tell them so. The Chaplains support and give expression to the University’s commitment to the development of the whole person, mind, body and soul. The Chaplains listen, respect and respond. They can mediate with University authorities and outside agencies as well as liaising with academic Colleges and departments when appropriate. They are involved in the provision of a range of activities which seek to encourage reflection, maturity, self-reliance and personal responsibility. They are also responsible for the College Chapel which is an oasis of hospitality and welcome in the midst of a busy campus.
