YOUR SU PRESIDENT

Róisín

Hi, I’m Róisín Nic Lochlainn and I’m your Students’ Union President for the academic year 2021/2022! I was the SU Vice-President/ Welfare and Equality Officer in 2020/21 so I have experience dealing with welfare related issues such as accommodation and mental health, so don’t hesitate to come to me for advice on anything at all! Before being involved with the union I studied law and soc & pol, and I understand the struggles of student life. Last year we successfully campaigned to reduce the student levy you pay to €140 from €224 and we will be continuing to campaign this year to make education accessible and affordable for all students. As an NUI Galway student you are also a member of the Union of Students in Ireland (USI) which is the national Student representative organisation, representing over 374,000 students across the island of Ireland. We will be campaigning with USI this year on national student issues so please get involved and make your voice heard! Make sure to follow us on our social media channels and look out for your SU Weekly Email in your inbox it will have all the information you need to know about life at NUI Galway! We are here to make your college experience the best possible and help with any problems. We are here to represent your voice so use us! I can’t wait to make up for the missed year of student life from Covid-19! Ní neart go cur le chéíle x

YOUR VICE-PRESIDENT/ WELFARE AND EQUALITY OFFICER My name is Cora Clarke and I have been elected as your Vice President for Welfare and Equality for the coming year. That means it is my job to support you through any issues you might face whether they be financial, academic, accommodation, health issues, etc. I hope to be someone you can rely on for help and I encourage any student to reach out with any problems so we can work together to solve them! I want to make sure student voices are heard and represented so I can fight for the best university experience for every single student! If you want to get involved in our Welfare Crew and help campaign on the student welfare issues that matter to you just give me a shout! Ar scath a chéile a mhaireann na daoine!

YOUR VICE-PRESIDENT/ EDUCATION OFFICER Hi there, my name is Clodagh McGivern and I’m your VPEducation Officer this year! I’ve completed my degree in Corporate Law and I’ve been involved in the Students’ Union in the past as the Convenor of Business, Public Policy and Law. My role is to help you with anything that relates to your education, whether it is issues that you are having with your academics or just general queries. This year I hope to help students with any new challenges that may come their way as we adapt to another year of learning, that is different to what we’re used to! I want students to get the most out of their college experience and I will do everything I can to make sure that their experience isn’t compromised due to problems with their education. If you are interested in becoming a Class Rep to act as the voice of your class please get in touch! Feel free to come and talk to be about anything whether it is issues you’re having or suggestions and ideas you’d like to share - I’d be more than happy to help!

This body reviews and directs the work of the Students’ Union and it’s also an opportunity for class representatives to raise issues affecting their class. How do I get involved? Class Rep elections will be held from the start of the year via the YourSpace platform until every class is represented. Once you are elected you will receive training and attend Class Rep and Comhairle Chomhaltas na Mac Léinn meetings during the year to act as the voice of your class. What’s in it for me? • • • • •

THE STUDENT LEVY IT’S YOUR MONEY! All NUI Galway students pay the Student Levy in addition to annual fees. The Student Levy is used to fund a number of student activities such as the Students’ Union; Clubs; Societies; Student Health Unit; Campus Radio; and the CÉIM Peer Learning Programme. The Levy is required because the University does not provide adequate funding for these services. Other colleges have much better facilities that their students do not have to subsidise, and their students’ union, clubs and societies also receive better funding. This is something your Students’ Union is always working on. Last year the Student Levy was reduced from €224 per student to €140 per student which means NUI Galway students are no longer paying the highest levy in the country. The Student Levy is distributed as follows: Students’ Union €40.00 Societies €25.00 Clubs €25.00 Student Health Unit €22.00 Áras na Mac Léinn €3.00 Flirt FM €6.00 Student Project Fund €5.00 CÉIM €14.00 Total €140.00 The Student Levy is your money so if you have any questions about how it is spent, be sure to ask! Simply contact the SU President, Róisín, on su.president@oegaillimh.ie The Students’ Union presents its accounts to Comhairle Comhaltas na Mac Léinn (SU Council) each year and they are also available to download from our website.

CÉIM PEER LEARNING CÉIM is an academic peer learning programme for 1st year Engineering, Geography, Law, Political Science and Sociology, and Psychology students. Based on the well-evidenced Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) model used in over 30 countries, CÉIM was initiated by NUI Galway Students’ Union in 2013 and is run as a partnership between students, academic staff and the Students’ Union.  CÉIM supports 1st year students to:  • Transition successfully to NUI Galway  • Make friends in their discipline  • Succeed academically  • Develop study skills  • Practice transferable skills  • Complete their studies  How it works  Student leaders from higher years facilitate weekly study sessions for small groups of 1st year students, creating peer-led learning communities where it’s easy to ask questions in a friendly environment.   Impact of CÉIM  Regular CÉIM attendees on average achieve higher grades (11-31% higher) than irregular and nonattendees   75% of 1st year students surveyed say CÉIM helped them make friends  What 1st year students say about CÉIM  CÉIM has been the highlight of my academic year. It was probably the only place where I actually got to know and talk to people throughout the year.’ 2020/21 1st year student (May 2021) ‘CÉIM has been the best part of my first year in college.’ 2020/21 1st year student (May 2021) ‘It provided a welcoming space to receive guidance and support from more experienced students.’ 2020/21 1st year student (May 2021)

79% OF COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO DISCLOSED AN EXPERIENCE OF SEXUAL MISCONDUCT TOLD A CLOSE FRIEND (SEXUAL EXPERIENCES SURVEY, 2020)

DON’T KNOW WHAT TO SAY? START HERE: DON’T

DO

DON’T ASK “WERE YOU DRUNK?/ARE YOU SURE?/ WHY DID YOU GO HOME WITH THEM?” - THAT SOUNDS LIKE YOU THINK IT’S THEIR FAULT. TRY TO LISTEN WITHOUT JUDGEMENT. DON’T SAY THINGS LIKE “I’LL KILL THEM!” - HEARING ABOUT SOMEONE’S NEGATIVE SEXUAL EXPERIENCE CAN BE UPSETTING - BUT TAKE A BREATH AND TRY TO FOCUS ON THEIR FEELINGS, INSTEAD OF YOUR OWN. DON’T RUSH THEM INTO SHARING ANYTHING THEY DON’T WANT TO. THEY MIGHT JUST TELL YOU A BIT, OR THEY MAY TELL YOU THE WHOLE STORY. DON’T SAY “YOU HAVE TO REPORT IT!”- PUSHING SOMEONE TO TAKE ACTION THEY DON’T WANT CAN BE DISEMPOWERING AND RE-TRAUMATISING.

DO SAY “I BELIEVE YOU”- OPENING UP ABOUT A NEGATIVE SEXUAL EXPERIENCE CAN BE STRESSFUL. LET THE PERSON KNOW YOU ARE LISTENING, YOU BELIEVE THEM AND WILL SUPPORT THEM. DO ASK “WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO NEXT?” THEY MIGHT NOT KNOW WHAT THEY WANT TO DO RIGHT AWAY, BUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT NEEDS TO BE THEIR CHOICE. DO ASK “HOW CAN I HELP?” YOU COULD OFFER TO FIND OUT ABOUT SUPPORT SERVICES LIKE STUDENT COUNSELLING, SU WELFARE OFFICER, THE LOCAL RAPE CRISIS CENTRE OR SEXUAL ASSAULT TREATMENT UNIT. EVEN JUST LISTENING TO THE PERSON CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE. DO LOOK AFTER YOURSELF - HEARING ABOUT SOMEONE’S NEGATIVE SEXUAL EXPERIENCE CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT. MAKE TIME FOR YOUR OWN SELF-CARE AND MENTAL WELLBEING.

PROJECT UNICOV NUI Galway is one of four Irish universities participating in the UniCoV project (www.unicov.org) to help detect and prevent the spread of COVID-19 among students and staff. This new research initiative involving twice weekly rapid antigen and saliva PCR testing, and wastewater monitoring is taking place in NUI Galway, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork and University College Dublin. Its aim is to support, facilitate and sustain the return of face-to-face on campus activity. What’s involved? By way of a video, volunteers will be trained to perform rapid nasal swab tests and provide saliva samples for PCR testing for 2-week or 8-week periods. After taking the twice-weekly tests, volunteers photograph/report the results via a web-enhanced application, and submit saliva samples twice weekly at an on-campus drop off point. If the rapid test result is positive, you will be clearly instructed on what to do next. Watch the explainer VIDEO Remember, testing alone doesn’t stop COVID-19 transmission. Please continue to follow Public Health Guidance - Wear A Mask, Avoid crowds, Wash your hands and Stay apart.

HERE’S SOME OF OUR TOP TIPS FOR LIFE IN GALWAY: 1. Buy a decent rain coat. Galway is known as the “Graveyard of Umbrellas” 2. Always walk in single file over the Salmon Weir Bridge or prepare to face death by a thousand dirty looks. 3. Don’t ask the DJ to play Galway Girl. Any version. Ever. 4. If you’re feeling sad/angry/hungover go and walk the Prom. You’ll feel better with the added bonus of beautifully sculpted cheekbones from the wind 5. Everywhere in Galway is a 10 minute walk (if you walk fast enough). 6. There’s always free stuff in the SU Office – condoms, pens, tampons, sweets, wall planners, rent books, advice, hugs etc. – just call in and ask nicely. 7. Join as many clubs and societies as possible. Get all the free pizza and pad out your CV with achievements like “Treasurer of the 4th Largest Home & Away Appreciation Society West of the Shannon”. 8. Carry a campus map with you at all times. You won’t get lost and you can also mark in where the treasure is buried. 9. Soggy socks are the depths of human misery. Always have a spare pair of socks within arm’s reach #WetAtlanticWay 10. Remember to always be a bag of cans and not a bag of cant’s.
