IN May JCI Airisto organized Baltic Sea project for the fourth time with local fourth grade school children. The event has been successfully organized with partners in previous years. Last year about 400 students got to learn about environmental awareness of Baltic Sea. A total of 10 schools are participating from Kaarina and Pargas. Action-mornings purpose is to raise children’s awareness of the Baltic Sea and how it can be protected even by small actions. Students learn about protection matters by taking part on a variety of tasks related to the water system and similar activities. The program includes; sorting garbage, fishing, Baltic Sea quiz and sea mark course. JC Airisto hopes that the event raises students and all citizens awareness of the situation of the Baltic Sea.

WOULD you like to be a leader seriously taken? To become the one, who gets things done? Would you like your customers to sign more contracts with you? To become the one, who closes deals when others can’t. Do you crave for a dream position? To become the one, they choose? Perhaps you want to impress him or her? Maybe you are pursuing one of the above? Or you want them all. It’s possible, with charisma. It’s your most valuable competitive advantage, no matter what you want to reach. Oh no, you say. I don’t have that inherent talent.

Wrong, there’s nothing mysterious or supernatural in charisma. It can be learned like any other skill. Just learn the basics, train, learn more, measure and practice. Repeat and you got it. Easy when you know how. Ok, let’s go. I’ll give you the basics. Charisma is a craft on eight domains: capturing presence, gripping inspiration, impressive communication, astonishing appearance, objective self-esteem, diverse emotional intelligence, sound courage and pure authenticity. Does this still sound a bit tricky? Maybe an example will shed some light on the matter. Let´s say you want to improve your
presence? Well, it is made up of positive approach, equal interplay and wholehearted focus. Ok, but how those can be trained further? Tell me more. About focus, for instance. Give me a drill for that. You got it. Stand or sit in a position where you see no movement but the person opposite you. Make sure the window and other people in the room are either behind you or by your side. Now it’s easy to focus. After doing this hundred times you may step by step broaden your field of view without losing your concentration. That was a little taster of charisma work out. TO me JCI offered once in a life time opportunity last summer when I participated in JCI Academy in Tokyo. The Academy offered unforgettable memories that I will cherish the rest of my life.
I spend a one of my best weekends ever in Academy´s home stay program with absolutely adorable Japanese non-English speaking family of four. I learned that it´s possible to create a really strong bond and friendship with another human without common language. Humanity and respect are enough. JCI Academy also changed the way I saw myself. I noticed that fear had bigger role in my life that I had realize. I didn’t really dared to take risks. I realize it while I was asked to jump on the glass with pare feet. “Totally insane! No way!” I thought and watched how my Academy fellows just did it. After few hesitating minutes I jumped too. I figured out how things that I fear are bigger in my head than they really are. At that moment I found my inner bravery and peace at once. THE most remarkable thing that I have learned from my international jaycee friends is that we are vanguards. MY name is Johanna Suominen. I’m from JCI Kouvola and I’m the National Information Officer 2016. My JCI career so far has been intensive and quite exceptional. I became a trial member two years ago and almost straight away I announced my interest in being on the board. A couple months later I found myself in the communications team refracting our chapter magazine Konuka. In 2015 I did the versatile board position as LIO at my local chamber. The election result didn’t end up in a regional position but a leap to a national one. Outside of JCI I work as a Development Manager at Hyötypaperi Oy. Hyötypaperi is a specialist in recycling services. We collect and process e.g. metal and scrapmetal, paper, construction- and demolition waste, forestry residues and other recyclable materials from manufacturing, logistics and other industries. My tasks are internal communication, customer reports, quality management systems and HR.

JCI Jyväskylä has a long tradition in twinning activities. Our two twinning chapters are JCI Würzburg in Germany and JCI Gent Artevelde in Belgium. The twinning contract with Würzburg was signed already 16 years ago and with Gent Artevelde in 2007. All our Twinning activities have been open for all three chapters and that is why we call our joint venture “MultiTwinning”. The biggest event has been in 2010

when we had 30 German and Belgium guests who experienced crisp cold, sunny, winter wonderland of Central Finland. One of the adventures was a hot air balloon ride, a bit rocky one but definitely memorable. This summer following JCI Finland’s strategy to provide members with possibilities to develop their international capabilities and business relations we organize a
JCI LAHTI is to become an international chapter, and we have started a multi-twinning program. We have an agreement with JCI Ålesund (NO), JCI Siauliai (LT) and JCI Pärnu (EE) to become twinning partners. We would like to find one more chapter from Central Europe to join us.
three day MultiTwinning event preceding the EC. The program offers inspiring activities in the spirit of JCI, namely Finnish cultural heritage and adventures, trainings, business visits, and not forgetting the most important one - experiencing sauna. The purpose of our twinning has always been to initiate and cherish learning, lifelong friendships, and create business opportunities for our members.
What is then multi-twinning? Well, it is sharing ideas, events and cultures with people from another country but who of course have the same JCI Spirit as you! Normally there is one meeting per year in one of the chapter’s home town. The good thing with having several partners is that you don’t have to arrange the

How to do a Jaycee project with an impact – Case of The SHIFT THE SHIFT is a business festival for thought leaders and pioneers in the fields of health, learning and energy. 1. Do it together – Getting out of your silos to share resources make you more efficient. Four chambers do the SHIFT together. 2. Find the right people – All of the key functions, for example marketing and sales need to be filled with professionals. This way the rest of the team can grow professionally by learning from the pros. 3. Find the right partners – The SHIFT could not be done without partners. From early on the event partnered with other organizations, in this case with the Turku chamber of commerce, startup community Boost Turku, and the Federation of Finnish Enterprises of Turku. 4. MOM & CAREER EVENTS STARTED IN HÄMEENLINNA TEXT: RISTO AHORINTA
ELINA Ruuskanen, Elise Stenroos and Laura Latomäki from JCI Hämeenlinna, all moms with careers had a common problem – they wanted to develop themselves professionally, but more often than not it was impossible to attend business events with children. They solved the problem by starting a lecture series aiming to deal with career issues mothers often

face. Mom & Career events focus on developing the professional abilities of mothers, and in order to make attending easy, children are also welcome to the events. On the first meeting Communications Manager Anna Availa from the city of Riihimäki spoke about mothers as leaders, time management and generally being in the job market as a
mother. The event was highly successful with more than twenty attendees, and currently a series of six more meetings are planned. Events with varying topics will be held in Hämeenlinna monthly, next being on 17.5. when the Chairman of the City Board of Directors Sari Rautio presents about combining motherhood and career.

BEING a JCI Vice President has led me to an unbelievable journey. I have enjoyed jumping to something that is unknown, challenging and demanding. Even though at the beginning my head was dizzy with new information and procedures, I immediately felt strong sense of belongingness. The astonishing journey has already provided many opportunities to grow and develop. I have learned much more than I ever imagined. The reason is that learning
is about right attitude – having an open mind to absorb everything you experience into lesson learned. The beauty of JCI is challenging yourself to be better and better. For me the interesting challenges and the constant need to develop have been the fuel that keeps motivating me to exceed myself and learning enables me to renew myself. What you learn as JCI officer is an overall experience that is hard to explain.
I have built better awareness towards different cultures and advocate differences – broaden further my way of seeing and thinking. Naturally the office has also given me the chance to boost my English skills by having speeches and trainings. Also I have expanded my comfort zone by miles. All in all, the learning is about challenging yourself and going beyond your boundaries. It is about what you decide do with the experiences and opportunities you are given.
JCI Finland has a new Executive Director! SUSA NÄRHI has previously worked as an accountable product manager on ICT -industry, where she was responsible of wholesale purchase and sales, marketing, negotiation and account management. She has wide international experience in sales, marketing management and concept development, including organizing customer and stakeholder events. JCI Finland will benefit Susa’s solid background

in building long-term partnerships. Her extensive experience from different industries from SMEs to international corporations gives great starting point and excellent networks to working as an Executive Director. Susa has also a career as a member of Local Chamber; she was a member of Tammerkoski JC for few years. That gives good perspective what this or-

The idea was to gather JC´s all around Area D together, to get to know companies and pubs around Varkaus, the heart of Eastern Finland. The tour started at 9 o´clock in Hanx, Leppävirta. This company is making motorbike clothes for the drivers. The next destination was the New Valamo Monastery in Heinävesi. There we got more JC`s from JCI Joensuu with us. We had a great opportunity to get know Valamos business – tourism, wine yard and whiskey distillery. Also there we had a chance to taste those products. This was a great event get to know members from other chapters as well as from our own chapter. I hope we can make this event annual, so hopefully see you all next spring in Varkaus! ARI SAAVALAINEN

JCI Impact & JCI Achieve in Vaasa IN April JCI Vaasa organized two official trainings JCI Impact & JCI Achieve which attracted participants from 4 different chambers - a big achievement for our small chapter. JCI Achieve was an eye-opener especially for JCI Vaasa’s new members to help them better understand the possibilities of JCI. JCI Impact gives tools for how to make an impact and create positive change in the surrounding society which we as individuals and members of an organization. We focused on sustainable development, recognizing society needs and initial problems and identified many things in our own society we as active citizens can ameliorate. ANNE HIETALA

JCI KOUVOLA HELPS YOUTH TOWARDS WORKING LIFE THIS year JCI Kouvola is implementing an unique project with a theme about working life and entrepreneurship to reach local youth. Kohti työelämää (“Towards Work Life”) is an umbrella project which consists of a range of youth related projects. These projects are ran throughout the year. Early this year JCI Kouvola set up a booth in a local vocational school and told students about JCI activities. In April JCI Kouvola held a se-
minar for students about career possibilities in leadership and entrepreneurship. During autumn JCI Kouvola will organize the national Päivä Johtajana (“Day as a leader”) project, a training to develop working life skills, which will be organized in cooperation with Ohjaamo-program. Additionally JCI Kouvola will organize “ABC of investment” in cooperation with a local investor club and Nuorten Areena (“Youth Arena”) discussion panel as a part
of local sports events. Also JCI Kouvola will be showcasing JCI possibilities, organizing a KOUaheadtraining and a Career Fair in cooperation with Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences. With Kohti työelämää project JCI Kouvola wants to help youth of Kouvola and Iitti to find their place in working life. ECOSYSTEMS are essential for new business models, as they form the landing platforms for app swarms. The national Xroad is already in use and connects the public sector with the private sector. The basis for automating both risk-evaluation and financing processes will soon be a reality: The TALTIO program will allow for standardised and real-time accounting, and bring all of the unlisted shares – including real-time ownership information – into the Central Securities Depository (CSD) systems. This means that real-time owner information will be added to the service ecosystem. “This opens up opportunities, for example to start-ups, to create new services. The time to prepare for this is right now,” says Bo Harald, the father of netbanking and the founder of the Real-Time Economy program. A GLOBAL LABORATORY “Why start with digitalising invoicing and accounting? It is one of the most everyday administrative issues you - as an entrepreneur - need to take care of. When you know in real-time what your cash flow is, when statement management and VAT reporting are digitalised and automated, your decisionmaking gets easier. You are always on top of your own and your company’s status”, says Harald. He continues, “We Finns have the world record in many

We are now working on taking cash register receipts directly to accounting systems and private e-banking thus eliminating the paper receipts altogether for most of the enterprises and citizens. We do think that we are a kind of a global laboratory for full and real time digital services and are keen to share our experience globally.” The different phases of development of the Real-Time Economy program up to now include the following:

1. Full SEPA – implementing payments and e-invoicing – with the support of the EU commission and the European Central Bank. 2. Harmonising the full value chain. 3. Fully Integrated Accounting (FIA), focusing on E-accounting reference and Standard for Electronic Financial Reporting, Electronic Financial Statements and XBRL. 4. Fully Integrated Payroll (FIP) and real-time VAT.
ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS DOWN 50 PERCENT “In 2012, the main goal was to reduce the company’s administrative costs by 50%. How? With automated financial administration, fully-automated reporting, enterprise risk mitigation, sustainability intelligence management and cutting red tape along the lines set out by the EU-commission. These developments will change the whole landscape for the business administration especially in the SME-sector. It is based on standardized data and the open interfaces create huge opportunities for the nimble app creators”, says Harald.
COST OF RISK MINUS THREE PERCENT OF TURNOVER Real-time information and digitalised processes reduce costs and enable more efficient decision-making. This also equates to risk-mitigation and reduced need for financing, when all of the needed information is accurate up-to-date and the accounts receivables can be reduced. Harald says: “It has been calculated that the cost of the risk-mitigation today and risks-materializing can be around three percent of your company’s turnover. Even a small improvement in credit, counterpart, liquidity and fraud risk means a lot of money.” LINKING DATA FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES The Real-Time Economy program needs standards, ecosystems and apps linking data from multiple sources. “When reliable information from registers of the public sector is linked with the private companies’ business information we can achieve whatever we want. We need to do link this data now. If we lose the momentum now, we will not easily get it back again,” guides Harald.

LAST year Matti Alahuhta, former President and CEO of Kone Corporation, published a book about leadership where he sums up the lessons learnt from his unique career as a successful top leader in Nokia and Kone Corporation. Currently he is Chairman of the Board of DevCo Partners Oy, Outotec Corporation, and The Confederation of Finnish Industries EK. Furthermore, he is a Member of the Board of Directors of Kone Corporation, Volvo AB and ABB Group. Matti Alahuhta shared with us his thoughts on leadership. Building trust is of essential importance, he underlines. “Trust is the foundation for all cooperation. It’s a key asset for all good leaders and successful organisations. Firstbeat Lifestyle Assessment Opens New Dimensions on Wellness TIMO Ritakallio, CEO of Ilmarinen Mutual Pension Insurance Company, recently had an opportunity to experience Firstbeat’s innovative Lifestyle Assessment for himself. The result was a new outlook on wellness and the discovery of recovery moments in his busy day. “A typical workday can be very hectic and includes board meetings, staff briefings, media events, and even television interviews,” Ritakallio describes. During his post-assessment review, Ritakallio was pleasantly surprised by the greenness of his personal report. Green marks indicate moments when the body experienced recovery. Many of these recovery moments occurred while Ritakallio was still at work. “It was interesting to see activities like briefings and interviews stimulating recovery. I do enjoy performing, and I like my job,” he explained. The most stressful moments of his day were transitions and

planning next day’s activities while watching television before going to bed. As an active orienteer, Ritakallio was familiar with measuring heart rate during exercise, but extended measurement and the introduction of advanced analytics was something new. “I was familiar with the concept of heart rate monitoring, but extending the scope beyond exercise to three whole days opens up new dimensions on wellness. I believe that performing a Lifestyle Assessment could be an excellent wake-up call for most of us. It helps to identify your stress factors and see how proper sleep and taking breaks at work affect your performance.” he muses. Ritakallio also believes that the importance of sleep should be emphasized more in working life and human resource management. “There is a huge difference in your performance, if you have slept and recovered enough or not,” he concludes.

LEADER BY ACCIDENT? IT was year 2000 and I had just left my job and thinking what to do next. In that time we used to check yellow pages and I decided to see if there was anything that would interest me. So I found my current employer, Inex Partners Oy. And I never knew where it would get me into. Jumped from a girly field of cosmetology to logistics was absolutely going to somewhere I had never given a single thought. But it got me. the people made every day different. First I learned the basics. Then I was guiding new workers. And the next level was to be a team leader. It took me eight years to become foreman. What I´ve learned is to understand work itself. And through work I’ve learned to understand people. To be a leader is not always easy. And it can also take a lot of energy because you are responsible of all the people that you are leading. But it’s worth it. To be a leader is
the best practice to get to know yourself. You must stay objective. I’ve learned to think “can I look into people’s eyes” before making important and sometimes hard decisions. SANTTU VEKKELI BEHIND THE HIDEOUS-SOUNDING CONCEPT OF INNOVATOR-ENTREPRENEUR-CEO IS A 29-YEARS OLD MAN FROM MELLUNMÄKI, EASTERN HELSINKI, WITH STUDIES IN FOOD MICROBIOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HELSINKI.

MY interest in entomophagy arose during a trip to Cambodia in 2009, whereas my interest took a more professional turn during a tenure as assistant researcher at Cornell University in 2012. Upon discovering the potential of the field and the current comparatively low technological level of development, I decided to undertake the development of the field and returned to Finland to build my first prototypes. In 2015 financing was secured and a one-man enterprise expanded into a firm of several employees. Because of my enterprise, I moved to Kouvola, which was hitherto unknown to me. I soon joined the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Kouvola in order to acquaint myself with the locals and to gain some non-entrepreneurial activities. This proved to be a good decision. I found both a lot of interesting to do and gained a contact, through which my enterprise gained a valuable new employee. AN INTERNATIONAL VENTURE The startup venture, Pohjolan Hyönteistalous Oy, that started out as a “garage company” in 2014, has since grown to employ five full-time employees in

addition to three part-time employees. The company develops farms and farming technology for growing food-grade insects. In essence we can convert any building anywhere in the world into an insect farm. The sale of insects intended for food use is currently banned in the EU because of the Novel Foods Regulation. It has been estimated, that food insects would reach the retail shops in 2018. Food insects are legal foodstuffs in almost all other parts of the world and this has directed the company to focus on export (initially directed towards the United States and Asia). Our focus in Finland is on R & D, organising of production and parts of the production chain. Our longer term goal is to be the foremost company in this segment globally and return to the European market after gaining momentum and experience abroad. INSECTS FOR FOOD? The FAO has advocated the use of food insects on grounds of their several environmental benefits, the greatest of which are their significantly lower requirements for space and feed per protein
kilogramme produced in comparison to traditional farmed animals. They require negligible amounts of water and allow the conversion of materials, otherwise poorly utilisable, into human foodstuffs. The greater part of insect foodstuffs sold in the western countries is based on cricket- and mealworm derived powders, which are used to augment the nutritional properties of traditional foodstuffs; in those countries, where insects form a traditional part of the staple diet, the insects are usually consumed whole.

Cross-cultural leadership – an Englishman in Helsinki I SPENT MY CHILDHOOD IN A SMALL VILLAGE IN THE EAST OF ENGLAND. AT SECONDARY SCHOOL, I WAS GIVEN THE CHOICE OF LEARNING FRENCH, GERMAN OR BOTH. I REGRET TO THIS DAY THAT I ONLY CHOSE FRENCH BUT AT THE TIME, EVEN FRENCH LANGUAGE SKILLS SEEMED IRRELEVANT IN RURAL LINCOLNSHIRE. AS my career progressed, my French language skills helped me secure a global IT management role at Gripple Ltd in Sheffield. It was here that I was introduced to JCI by the Gripple founder – Hugh Facey MBE who was also the 1979 JCI UK National President. In 2004, I joined JCI Sheffield, a chamber formed in 1927 and was the 3rd chamber established outside the USA. Despite my demanding work schedule, I was very active in JCI Sheffield and become the president in 2007. This year was particularly special as JCI Sheffield celebrated its 80th anniversary and also hosted the UK National Conference. My career then took me to Dubai where I worked with an international team to establish JCI Dubai. I had the honour of representing JCI Dubai at the 2008 World Congress in Delhi. I was introduced to Finland through meeting JCI Reading’s Finnish president in 2006 and she would later become my wife. I was briefly involved with JCI Cosmopolis in 2009, before my career took me back to the UK. Today’s organisations need leaders who can adjust to different environments quickly and effectively communicate with people from other cultures. There’s no doubt that JCI had a profoundly positive effect on my personal & professional life. It allowed me to gain skills and experiences that I feel could take others (nonJCI members) a lifetime to achieve. I embraced many opportunities in JCI from local to international level. I attended a number of European & World Congresses that expanded my global contacts, many of which I have turned into life-long friendships and business associations. In today’s ‘information age’, business leaders are increasingly expected to lead intercultural /

global teams. Managing teams across international borders demands cultural empathy – the ability to understand different points of view and share feelings & emotions. My JCI experiences allowed me to refine my empathetic skills. From working on a cross-faith Peace Conference in London - to losing my passport at one of the world’s most dangerous borders in Korea, JCI allowed me to learn in a supportive environment with like-minded people. In 2012, I moved back to Finland and joined Makita Oy as their CIO. Makita Oy is responsible for a large geographical area and is part of the Makita Corporation from Japan. On a daily basis, I’m interacting with staff from around the globe and dealing with diverse cultures. The cross-cultural leadership at Makita Oy is challenging from a number of perspectives including geopolitical issues, time-zones, language skills & business customs. My advice for aspiring cross-cultural leaders would be to exploit every opportunity to understand different cultures. Consider speaking to the Syrian refugee in your local café or stretch your networking skills at international JCI events. This will help you challenge cultural stereotypes and gain first-hand knowledge & understanding. I would also strongly recommend language skill development. Language ability can open many doors and I hope to refine my Finnish language skills once my MBA studies at Haaga-Helia are complete next year. ANDREW BAXTER

Enjoy the lightness of the night. Saturday the 18th of June is “the day”. Remember to participate the General Assembly of Association of Senators in Europe (ASE) in the morning. You will get information what ASE has been doing through the past year and most of all; it is election day. Important day for us in Finland, Asko Männistö will be elected as a President of ASE. “THE biggest learning happens when you are out of your comfort zone”, says Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko. President and CEO of Marimekko and the winner of last year’s the Young Leader of the Year -competition hopes to encourage even more young people interested in leadership to jump for the challenge and to understand that also as a leader it is important to always be true to yourself and find your own leadership style. Tiina sets a great example herself: “Throughout my career, I have been doing work that genuinely both inspires as well as challenges me. When you truly enjoy what you do, it increases your desire to continuously learn and usually then brings success. I have always kept an open mind – also to new career opportunities. I have not been scared of jumping for challenges in a bit of the unknown.”

New facts and JCI friends from Koliday
TWINNING programs are one of the perks of JCI. Many chapters have their own programs providing members an opportunity to create international network and to get familiar with other cultures. Not to mention have a lot of new friends. JCI Lappeenranta has a long twinning tradition. European Multi Twinning (EMT) is said to be the oldest and the biggest twinning agreement in the history of JCI. The main purpose of EMT is to arrange annual conferences to discuss interesting topics and collaboration between countries in the EU as well as widen the

professional and social horizons. Lappeenranta has been a part of EMT since 1989. I remember my first EMT experience. We had travelled several hours to reach our destination in Belgium. After a long journey we arrived to the congress hotel tired but it didn’t matter as we had an opportunity to spend four exciting days with great people. WHAT do You get when You combine the enthusiasm and perseverance of first timers with the know-how of experienced JCs? The excellent regional JCI meeting was the answer of most of the 200 Koliday participants! The annual regional meeting of D and B regions was held from 18th to 20th of March on the top of Koli. The most beautiful sunny late winter weather, excellent local-based food and diverse training offerings with successful theme celebration hooked the participants on North Karelian hospitability. The weekend offered something to every open minded JC on the field of topics marketing, sales and charisma, not to mention networking. We could also enjoy the international experience of Key Note Jani Akkila who had worked several years abroad until he with his partner decided to move their business to Joensuu. LET’S not fix what’s not broken, but let’s hone and refine the edges. Let’s concretize and bring things closer to daily doings. It’s good to build on a solid foundation. From these thoughts, the new strategy for the period 2017–2020 began to be put together. We got acquainted with the big picture: the whole of it. We looked at what elements the current strategy offers and what direction JCI is taking. We tossed ideas and views around, relating our experiences. We challenged the members to interaction and working with us. In some instances, I could say that we were actively provocative and used the motto, ”If one does not get angry, nothing will change”. We wanted a new kind of thinking: active reasoning that takes into account opportunities of the future, while still respecting what already exists. The objective is a winning strategy enabling success. After all, strategy is doing. Planning. Taking action. Strategy helps to manage activities, exploit strengths and see results. The word strategy has been claimed to work like a short circuit, but at its best, it’s something that is known and shared: a common direction and goal. A tangible tool. The operational environment of JCI is an ideal learning environment in a quick-
ly changing world, and above all, in the working life. At the same time with doers and doings changing yearly, it is challenging from the perspective of continuity and things involving long-term planning. We are truly well armed. Strategy 2020. If we are only able to exploit its full potential. In practice, this will mean making a clear and accessible goal. Helping our doers

Including various points of view: members, cooperation partners, employers, society. Keeping the big picture clear and the goal in view. Not changing the message in midstream. We are known as a tangible enabler for developing leadership and working life skills.
