Remembering The Titan

As we were in the midst of pulling together this issue, tragedy struck in the Atlantic Ocean as Everett-based OceanGate Expeditions' Titan submersible suffered a catastrophic implosion and the five crew members aboard all lost their lives. We posted the following reflection on our social media; our hearts continue to go out to everyone affected, from both near and far:

We've been pretty quiet here this week, and that’s because, like many of you, we've been glued to the search for the missing Titan and her crew, holding out hope that the story would end with good news.

Sadly, today it has been confirmed that will not be the case and our hearts are truly saddened by the loss of the crew and we are keeping their families in our thoughts.

We featured @oceangateexpeditions in our June 2022 issue, and over the course of my (editor Kate Calamusa) research, I had the pleasure of interviewing Stockton Rush. His passion for pursuing the mysteries of the sea was truly inspiring, and his spirit of adventure was infectious. I am incredibly saddened that our community has lost such a visionary.

I will end this missive with a quote from the article from Rush in what I hope is a fitting tribute to him—and everyone involved in the exploration:

“I had thought space was my calling, but what I realized was that I really wanted to be an explorer, to discover new things, find new life forms, to see things another human being hasn’t ever seen before. APBA Gold Cup Returns to Seafair for HomeStreet Bank Cup Series

Here come the hydros! For this year’s classic summer event, all your favorite Seattle Seafair mainstays—the Torchlight Parade, the log boom, the pirates (arrr!)—will be back, but they will be joined by another boating competition that hasn’t been seen in the area for nearly four decades: The American Power Boat Association’s (APBA) prestigious Gold Cup.

Since 1986, the APBA Gold Cup was awarded at various other premier hydroplane racing events around the country, most recently as part of a long-running stint at the annual San Diego Bayfair celebration. However, Bayfair announced in June that it would not be hosting the APBA competition in September, citing the loss of some sponsorships and rising production costs due to inflation.

As a result, the Gold Cup competition will triumphantly return to Lake Washington this month, making Seafair’s HomeStreet Bank Cup the final event of the 2023 H1 Unlimited Racing Series circuit. The winner of the HomeStreet Bank race will be awarded the APBA Gold Cup on August 6, significantly ramping up the drama and anticipation for Seafair.

Established in1904, the Gold Cup is the oldest trophy in American motorsports. The APBA event was first held in Seattle in 1951, during the heyday of local racer Stan Sayers and his legendary Slo-mo-shun IV and Slo-mo-shun V vessels that became synonymous with Seafair hydro racing through the 1960s. This year will be the 15th time Seattle has hosted the Gold Cup event.

On August 4, the three-day H1 Unlimited race will begin its 70th year on Lake Washington to kick off the Seafair Festival Weekend, which will also feature three precision aerial performances by the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels. Other aerobatic demonstrations to be held over the weekend will be jumps by the U.S. Army’s Golden Knights parachute team, flyovers by antique World War II-era B-17 and B-25 bombers, and other maneuvers by modern military planes and helicopters.

Those interested in a closer look at the Blue Angels crew as they practice their routines can attend the August 3 Seafair Brunch and Blues event on the Boeing Field tarmac, just yards away from the F/A-18 jets as they take off. Meanwhile, in downtown Seattle, revelers can view the Alaska Airlines Seafair Torchlight parade at 3 p.m. on July 29. The free event will feature more than 100 acts, including marching bands, floats, dragon dancers, precision drill teams, dancing horse teams, and, of course, the dread Seafair Pirates. The Seattle waterfront will also celebrate Fleet Week, August 1-6, with a parade of ships through Elliott Bay and tours of vessels from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and Royal Canadian Navy along Piers 46, 66, and 69.

Stability of Aspen’s Popular New Carbon Cat Tender to Translate into Hardtops

When is a catamaran never quite like a twin-hulled boat? The designers at Aspen Power Catamarans may have figured this question out with the release of its new Carbon Cat tender, a hybrid cat that may affect the way boaters view not only tenders, but flybridge hardtops as well.

The Burlington, Washington-based company launched the Carbon Cat earlier this year and has earned praise for the vessel’s lightness and stability. The 9-, 10-, and 11-foot options for the Carbon Cat have performed well, providing a surprisingly smooth ride, even in a strong chop.

One of the keys to the tender’s capabilities is the hybrid design of the traditional catamaran hull. Viewed from the front, the Carbon Cat may look like any other tender on the water, with a deep, single-entry forefoot to cut through waves. But farther aft the contour gradually flattens out and blends into a conventional twin-hull configuration, allowing aerated water to flow past the stern with reduced friction.

Aspen said it has filed for a patent on the Carbon Cat hull shape. According to Aspen, the low-drag shape helps reduces power requirements by 35%, compared to conventional inflatable RIBs or other hard-bottom boats of its size. The company reported sea trial speeds up to 21 mph in the 11-foot Carbon Cat, using a 9.9-hp Yamaha outboard.

Weight reduction was also a primary concern with the Carbon Cat’s design. True to its name, the Carbon Cat makes extensive use of composite carbon-fiber materials, such a S-glass and Divinycell foam, in combination with airtight voids for high strength-to-weight ratios. Unlike many lightweight boats, however, the Carbon Cat’s modified twin hull provides a stable ride.

Other notable features of the Carbon Cat are its wide, wishbone-shaped gunwales that provide comfortable seating on both sides, with thick SeaDek foam used as non-skid cushioning and as a rub-rail bumper. In the center, a moveable cube-shaped seat allows operators to shift positions for manning the outboard or rowing with oars that are included with the boat. With dry weights between 126 and 151 pounds for the three Carbon Cat models, Aspen also offers optional transom wheels to aid in beaching or hauling the tender up boat ramps.

The carbon-fiber material is now being used elsewhere in Aspen’s products, including a new hardtop option for its 40-foot C120 catamaran. (See this month’s Arrivals on pages 38-39 for a description of Aspen’s new 37-foot C107 hybrid cat.) These hardtops can include features such as hatches, masts, and solar panels without any reduction in performance.

WA Legislature Awards $5M For Everett Pier Electrification, Green Tech Upgrades

In a push to modernize Everett’s port facilities, the Washington state legislature approved the appropriation of $5 million in June to update the port’s Pier 3 facility with greater access to electricity for plug-in marine vessels and other dock equipment.

One of the primary goals of the modernization plan is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the Port. By improving electric connectivity, the Port of Everett said it will eliminate the use of diesel generators at Pier 3, which are a significant source of air pollutants at marine terminals statewide.

The new funds will also support some future green innovations the Port is currently considering, such as the development of all-electric tugboats, barges, and other harbor craft. “Electrifying Pier 3 will help protect our environment for future generations all while modernizing the maritime industry,” said State Senator Marko Liias (D-Everett).

The 650-foot-long pier, built in 1973, has gone through a series of upgrades since the 1990s. In the last decade, the Port has invested

more than $150 million into seaport modernization efforts, including stormwater treatment initiatives, the enlargement of dock space for larger ships, greater access to shore power, and mitigation of legacy contamination from former mill sites.

This latest round of “decarbonization” improvements from the $5 million in state funds is expected to eliminate more than 630 tons of carbon dioxide emissions within the first year of operations, the Port said. The Port of Everett Seaport is currently the second-largest export customs district in the state, accounting for nearly $21 billion worth of annual U.S. exports, and fifth largest on the West Coast. It is also the third largest container port in Washington state, handling 100% of the oversized aerospace parts used in the manufacture of Boeing’s 767, 777, and K-C Tanker programs, and providing 40,000 jobs to the region.

Floating the Idea

Lake lovers are likely familiar with the name Basta Boatlifts, the SeaTac-based company that has crafted bottom-resting hydraulic boat lifts for over 30 years. Well-regarded bastions of lake life that dot many dockside landings and keep boats safe from any wake-induced swells, Basta’s lifts are strong and sleek, crafted from either galvanized steel or aluminum, and feature the company’s patented over-center gravity locking design.

But owner Bryce Hansen says that the firm knew that as much as their products have provided solutions for freshwater use, there was still a conundrum to conquer: how to utilize the tech for saltwater. “We saw an opportunity to bring Basta to an entirely new marketplace, but knew a bottom-resting lift wouldn’t work for tidal changes like we see in the Sound, for example,” he says. “So we got to work designing a new prototype that would instead float.”

Thus, after a couple of years of development, Basta debuted the first of their floating hydraulic lifts just last month. The in-water base is built off of hardy, foam-filled floats and the entire free-standing, over-center hydraulic lift can be tied to a dock or a buoy, as solar

panels help power the lift and don’t require a plug-in. Designed to handle heavy weather, Hansen says they tested prototypes here in the Sound over the winter in 35 knot winds and the lifts stayed “in place beautifully.” Basta can also scale the lift in 6-inch increments to fit pretty much any size vessel by adding additional floating units; the stock version of the hydraulic lift can handle up to 11,000 pounds.

But beyond protection from the chop, this floating lift can offer another boon for boaters: A vessel kept out of saltwater should require less maintenance such as bottom cleanings, paint, and haulouts. “It’s an added beauty, for sure,” concludes Hansen. “Not only will these lifts protect your boat from up top, but below as well as it will save you time and money down the line from cleanings, etc. We also love that it really makes it more environmentally friendly, too, if we are keeping some of those cleaning chemicals out of our waters.”

Aspen C107 Catamaran

Asymmetrical hulls, asymmetrical power: The new C107 from Aspen Power Catamarans harnesses its innovative design features to provide smooth, easy cruising.

Many people are naturally drawn to symmetry. But in the chaos of nature, symmetry is not always the most elegant solution. Exhibit A is the new C107 from Aspen Power Catamarans, which not only uses asymmetric twin hulls but also asymmetric power—something Aspen says is unprecedented—to provide a smooth, quiet, and fuel-efficient ride.

Let’s start with those counterintuitive hulls. To achieve the general benefits of powered multihulls (stability, low drag, more space), Burlington-based Aspen first experimented with single-engine designs, making the starboard hull wider to fit the inboard propulsion system. Eventually, Aspen founder Larry Graf and his team designed and patented a completely new hull, the Power Proa, that eliminated the need for a keel and rudder by making precise hydrodynamic chine adjustments to channel water efficiently through the tunnel. The results reduced friction and compensated for the starboard engine torque to keep the vessel true without needing helm corrections.

For the current C107 model, Aspen got creative again by using two different outboard Yamaha gasoline engine sizes: 200 hp to starboard; 70 hp to port. Not to get too Einstein-y on the physics part, but the C107’s port hull, which is 35% narrower than the starboard one, reduces drag by 50% and overall vessel weight by 44%. These efficiencies can be maintained regardless of whether the outboards are running simultaneously or each on their own. At a cruising speed of 23 mph, the C107 has an estimated range of 236 miles.

Besides the high-tech hull, Aspen also focused on the most efficient use of space above. The open-air cockpit provides 69 square feet of space and includes two large lazarette storage holds in the deck floor, a small sink to port, a Corian fold-down countertop, two swing-out stools, and a mini-refrigerator by the aft bulkhead. Along the transom, facing forward, is a 96-quart Igloo cooler, fitted with a cushioned top as an extra seat. A swim platform at the stern, in between the outboards, features a recessed three-step ladder.

Entering the salon, the galley is immediately to port, opposite a dinette table and two Ultra Leather-upholstered benches to seat up to four. The galley, with Burmese teak flooring, is equipped with a sink with a tile backsplash, a Force 10 two-burner propane stove and oven, and a Nova Kool refrigerator under the Bentley’s helm seat. Below the galley is a cleverly tucked away quarter berth; the dinette can also be converted into a berth for more guests.

The forward helm features joystick and bow-thruster controls, a stainless steel wheel, Garmin multi-function displays, and a 3” Ritchie compass. Starboard of the helm, a few stairs lead down to the master cabin, which features a king-size berth athwartship, two openable hatches to access the foredeck, and two storage compartments. Just aft to starboard is the separate, enclosed head with a shower hose attachment.

The hardtop above the helm includes two moon-roofs that open manually for ventilation and two solar panels to provide 360 watts of recharging power. Options are also available for a kayak/canoe storage rack on the roof, a cockpit sunshade, or a davit and support structure for an RIB tender over the stern.

2013 50’ Camper & Nicholson

The custom-built design; those clean, subtle curves; that deep-blue hull: all found in one package and now available from Chuck Hovey Yachts, this 50-foot summer-ready cruiser, Velsheda, is a real looker.

Here’s one worth sitting back and admiring for a bit. Built in 2013, this Camper & Nicholson beauty harkens back to the centuries-old romance of luxury yachting. Named after the famous 129-foot Velsheda J-class racing yacht designed by Charles E. Nicholson in 1933, this C&N model shares some of that boat’s elegant style, with its subtle, clean curves and deep-blue hull.

The custom-built vessel, designed by Leonardo Ferragamo, contains two cabins, three heads, and a number of classic Italian interior touches, including rich, high-gloss mahogany paneling and teak and holly flooring throughout.

The roomy cockpit, partially shaded by the overhanging hardtop, is dominated by an enormous sunpad, with two L-shaped, cushioned benches and lacquered side tables located forward. Up at the foredeck, which is accessed via side decks and through a skylight hatch in the master cabin, is more recreational space for a removable sun pad. Astern is a wide hydraulic swim step that abuts a garage neatly tucked under the transom, containing a 9’ 2017 Williams Mini Jetboat 280 tender.

Through two glass doors is the indoor-outdoor salon with a C-shaped settee and dining table to starboard. Opposite the settee is a galley and bar area equipped with a sink, a foldable faucet,

a twin-burner Schott Ceran cooktop, an Isotherm ice-maker, and a below-counter refrigerator/freezer. All galley space can be cleverly covered with a fold-down countertop, which also can be converted into an entertainment center with a hide-away, flat-screen TV.

Forward of the salon, the pilothouse features panoramic views and a custom-made helm station with a steel analog instrument panel, a wooden ship’s wheel, and beige leather trimmings. Helm controls include a modern suite of Raymarine navigation equipment, such as Axiom multi-function displays, VHF, chartplotter/radar, and autopilot, along with BCS thruster controls. The ergonomic twin helm chair is adjustable and upholstered with Brisa Ultraleather.

Just below the helm are wooden steps leading down to the cabins, beginning with an atrium area featuring a blue-fabric loveseat, a countertop, and a large dresser. The master stateroom to starboard and VIP cabin to port are arranged in a double and a twin layout, with an additional staff cabin making a crewed vessel a possibility. Both main cabins have en suite heads, separate shower stalls, and openable portholes for ventilation.

The Velsheda 50 cruises at 28 knots and tops out at 31 knots via its 715-hp twin Caterpillar C12 diesels, which recently received 1,000-hour Caterpillar service.

2005 Pacific Mariner 65'

This stunner listed by Hampton Yacht Group features a commodious layout that offers plenty of space for mixing and mingling, reclining and recreating.

With a wide beam of more than 17 feet, this Pacific Mariner features vast amounts of interior space for socializing, entertaining, and recreating, with four posh cabins (including the crew quarters) and four heads. Co-designed by yacht masters William Garden and Greg Marshall, the 2005 Grate Deal is built for long cruises with tasteful amenities for up to six people and two crew members.

The spacious aft deck, lined with teak, provides sweeping, open-air views from under the flybridge overhang; the space can also be totally enclosed in Barrett Strataglass vinyl in inclement weather. A forward-facing, cushioned settee along the transom is positioned around a high-gloss wooden table with an inlaid compass rose. Aft of the transom is a wide swim step with a staple rail for storage of up to three kayaks. On the cockpit’s port side is a docking station with engine and bow-thruster controls.

A sliding glass door separates the cockpit from the salon interior, featuring satin-finished cherry woodwork and granite inlay countertops. To port, an L-shaped sofa curves around a dining table that can be raised electronically. To starboard are two free standing chairs near a built-in entertainment center, equipped with a flat-screen HDTV. The salon bulkhead also includes a wet bar with a refrigerator and ice maker nestled inside cherry cabinetry.

Four steps up to the pilothouse level leads to a portside galley with granite countertops. Updated full-size appliances include a refrigerator/freezer, a five-burner ceramic cooktop, a microwave, a large conventional oven, and a dishwasher. Forward of the galley is a dining settee just aft of the helm. The two Stidd helm chairs can swivel around to access the dining table so the captain can join Grate Deal guests.

The lower helm, itself, is equipped with a large wooden ship’s wheel, and two Detroit/MTU, three Garmin, and two Furuno Navnet multi-function displays, plus controls for NAIAD stabilizers and hydraulic bow thrusters. Other electronics include an Icom M602 VHF radio, a Simrad AP20 autopilot, and Furuno DGPS GP-37. Sliding doors to port and starboard provide easy access from the pilothouse to the walk-around side decks.

An interior staircase leads to a sleek and airy hardtop flybridge with full helm controls and two rotating white leather Stidd pedestal chairs. Aft of the upper helm is an L-shaped settee and teak folding table. Other amenities include a refrigerator and an electric BBQ. Farther aft is a hydraulic davit and power boom holding a 14' Caribe RIB tender.

If you are island hoppin’ this month, you’d be remiss to not actually go to Island Hoppin’. Our absolutely favorite on a hot summer’s day, though, is the Feel the Burn Chili Blonde, a spicy summer sipper that can be served up michelada style with Clamato, mango juice, Worcestershire sauce, pepperoncini juice, hot sauce, salt, and pepper, all in a glass with Tajin on the rim. Outside food is always welcomed, but the brewery also offers a plentiful selection of bites that includes a local cheese plate served up with Girl Meets Dirt Jam or smoked salmon from Lummi Island Wild. Be sure to check their social feeds before planning a visit, as the bustling little joint frequently hosts live music, trivia nights, or visiting local food trucks to amp up the already enjoyable atmosphere.

Opening their tasting room and restaurant just over a year ago, which is conveniently situated a mere two blocks from the Clinton ferry docks, Thirsty Crab Brewery is all things approachable and friendly, from the staff to the hand-lettered selection of rotating brews that usually includes a nice assortments of IPAs, ambers, some blondes and our personal fave: the jalapeno Hefe. We suggest ordering a frosty pint of the latter, and pairing it with a brat topped with coleslaw, bacon, and BBQ sauce from the brewery’s accompanying food truck, Build-A-Brat, for a truly satisfying supper.

TOMMY CASIAS, new manager for Jeff Brown Yachts in Seattle, lends his thoughts on buying, selling, and the local team’s incredibly personal approach to both.

NWY: Jeff Brown Yachts is the exclusive dealer for many top-tier brands here in the Northwest, from Axopar and Brabus to Sirena and Pardo. What are a few of your favorite current models from these brands, and why?

TC: That’s a tough question, almost along the lines of asking me to pick a favorite child! In no particular order: From Sirena, I really like the 58. It’s a great build for the PNW, perfect for those weekend- or week-long trips to the Islands or cruising the Inside Passage. Pardo builds a number of very attractive yachts, by far my favorite is the GT52. Fully enclosed with plenty of deck space for entertaining. Whether it’s galley up or galley down, it offers versatility in design to meet the individual needs of its owner. Axopar is the ideal Northwest boat and the 37 is perfect. NWY: What advice would you have for a first-time boat buyer? Which of your vessels do you think would make a stellar purchase for someone just getting into cruising?

TC: The main question is: What do they plan on doing with the boat, and what will it be used for? Whether it’s spending time on the lake, taking day trips, overnight trips, weekend excursions, etc., once they establish that, then they can work backwards from there. Apart from picking a particular brand, it’s always good to know what features you want and need on your new purchase. How often will you really use that galley? How likely are you to spend a night on your new purchase? I encourage first-time buyers to consult with existing owners that own boats similar in size that they are considering. Learning from others' experiences, really is priceless. For new boat owners (and existing), I would recommend the Axopar 28. It’s manageable in size, yet versatile enough to get you out exploring our beautiful waters. Want to spend a day on the lake or cruise up to Friday Harbor for the weekend? The Axopar 28 is an ideal boat for such! It really is all smiles when you’re at the helm of one.

NWY: How does the buying experience differ at a boutique firm such as JBY as opposed to a more traditional firm? What are the advantages for a buyer?

It may be a Friday evening “Docks after Dark” event, Saturday demo days, a poker run or something a little more adventurous. Last summer, we held an Axopar Brabus Northwest Adventure. This five-day

event left our Seattle office with stops in Poulsbo, San Juan Island, and then traveled up into British Columbia, stopping at Salt Spring Island, and finally landing at West Coast Wilderness Lodge. We had the pleasure of Axopar CEO Jan-Erik joining us, along with JBY leaders Jeff and Karen Brown. There are plans to do more adventures and keep the excitement motoring along!

NWY: What are a few of the benefits of listing a brokerage vessel with you and the team at Jeff Brown Yachts? What particular expertise do you bring to the table in that arena?

I was then fortunate enough to land a Sales role with a local Seattle startup which further ignited my growing interest in sales. Anglers should be tickled pink this month as a robust return of salmon begin to head upriver; MARK YUASA runs down the details.

Many anglers will be blushing with excitement as millions of pink salmon arrive during late summer in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound along with a myriad of other salmon fishing options across the state. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has predicted a robust return of 3,950,917 pinks this summer, compared to 2,925,681 in 2021 and 608,388 in 2019. The 2023 forecast is very close to the 10-year average of 4 million. Among the higher predicted returns are Hood Canal, Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Green, Skagit, Snohomish, Nisqually, Stillaguamish, Puyallup rivers.

While relatively small (3 to 5 pounds), pinks are the fastest growing Pacific salmon species and return in bulk during odd-numbered years after spending two years in the ocean before migrating to natal rivers. The Puget Sound pink run usually peaks in mid-August, and in southern Puget Sound the last week of August and early September are best. Pink fishing in Puget Sound was very good at times in 2021 and 2019 during late summer. Pinks will remain part of daily catch limits in marine fisheries and limits in freshwater areas will be watershed specific.

When targeting pinks, the color of choice is a hot pink lure, spoon, jig or fly as the color resembles plankton or krill that are part of their main diet. Stick with smaller sized mini-squids or small spoons tied behind a short 13- to 16-inch leader to a white-colored dodger or silver flasher. Another method is a smaller 8-inch Pro-Troll flasher with a slightly longer leader of 15 to 20 inches. From boat or shore, casting a Buzz Bomb or Point Wilson jig works well. Let it sink about a foot per second; once you feel the jig go slack, reel up (don’t set the jig hard because pinks have soft jawlines) until you feel the rod bend. Other lures include a pink Rotator trailed behind a small pink plastic “hoochie” squid. Let that flutter down to the desired depth and then slowly retrieve from shore or a boat. The main element to success when fishing from a boat is to troll very slow (1.5 to 2.0 mph depending on current, tide and wind). Pinks like to stay close to the shoreline to avoid strong currents making them easily accessible for bank anglers. Around an hour before and right after a flood tide or a slack tide is the optimal time to catch pinks.

Good pink spots via boat are Possession Bar, Browns Bay, off the Edmonds Marina, west side of Whidbey Island, from Mukilteo south to Shipwreck, Possession Point, Jefferson Head, west side of Bainbridge Island, Richmond Beach, and West Point south of Shilshole Bay. Excellent shore spots include the Mukilteo Lighthouse shoreline and just north at the new ferry pier; Edmonds Pier; Lincoln Park in West Seattle; Carkeek Park; Alki Point; Deception Pass; Golden Gardens; Redondo Beach; Dash Point State Park pier and shoreline; Fort Casey, Keystone, Bush Point and Lagoon Point off the west side of Whidbey Island; Point Wilson and Fort Casey State Park near Port Townsend; Point No Point;

Possession Point Bait House; Picnic Point in Edmonds; and Point Defiance Park Boathouse or Les Davis Piers in Tacoma.

Hook Some Chinook or Coho

On the Lower Columbia River at Buoy 10, up to west Puget Sound, the hatchery Chinook and coho fishery is open August 1 through September 4, except for closures on August 21-23 and August 28-29. Fishing along the entire Columbia mainstem up to the Highway 395 Bridge at Pasco also opens for salmon fishing on August 1. Don’t overlook Willapa Bay (Marine Area 2-1), and North Bay in Grays Harbor (2-2) which both open August 1 for hatchery Chinook and hatchery coho. The entire coast should remain open for Chinook and hatchery coho at Ilwaco, Westport, Neah Bay, and La Push provided catch quotas aren’t achieved before the scheduled closing date of September 30. Before heading out the door, check the WDFW website to see what is open or closed and what you can or can’t keep.

Nab Some Crab

Another summer ritual returns this month, as Dungeness crab fishing is now open Thursdays to Mondays of each week through September 4 in the Strait of Juan de Fuca east of Bonilla-Tatoosh Island line off Neah Bay (Marine Area 4), Sekiu (5) and Port Angeles (6); the east side of Whidbey Island (8-1 and 8-2); and northern Puget Sound (9). The Central Puget Sound (10) crabbing season is open on Sundays and Mondays of each week through September 4 and south-central Puget Sound (11) crab fishery is open on Sundays and Mondays of each week through August 28. Crabbing in Hood Canal (12) north of Ayock Point is open on Thursdays through Mondays of each week through September 4; and in the San Juan Islands (7 South and 7 North) it is open on Thursdays through Mondays of each week all the way through September 30.

Be sure crab pots are properly weighted down during big tidal exchanges to avoid traps moving or becoming lost. Also avoid deploying crab pots and gear in ferry lanes which have caused serious damage to ferry boats in the past. What a Week

DOUG HANSEN recounts the 40th edition of Race Week, and all its successes, challenges, and glories.

Anacortes Race Week is a cornerstone of the Salish Sea sailboat racing calendar with a four-decade-long legacy. The weeklong regatta attracts sailors from Puget Sound, British Columbia, and beyond, bringing out the best racers, organizers, and race management that our corner of the world has to offer.

Race Week, as it is commonly known amongst sailors, welcomes a variety of racing classes, including handicap-corrected time fleets, One Design racing, and a low-key cruising class. The regatta typically includes multiple daily races on temporary windward and leeward courses, allowing sailors to showcase their skills and compete. This is the third year for Race Week in Anacortes, having been held previously in Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island since 1983. Even though this is the 40th anniversary of the event, it is always growing, developing, and adapting to the participants’ needs.

This year’s event had its fair share of successes and challenges on the water. The racing area is in a seemingly random and turbulent vortex of current swirls where tidal streams appear and disappear in minutes. This leaves some racers smiling at first, only to completely shift moods on the next lap as the same boats get spit out the back. The wind conditions are also mixed, with steady, strong winds on some days followed by tricky, shifty conditions on the next. It truly does test racers in a complete range of conditions.

On Monday, racers hit the ground running, knocking off a string of races in a steady breeze

that reached into the mid-teens. This was followed by a strategic drifting competition on Tuesday in what was to be a single, light air race before the fleet went in for the day. On Wednesday, it initially appeared that things would mirror Tuesday’s light conditions. But instead, Race Officer Charlie Rathkopf jumped on the radio with the Coast Guard and got permission to relocate the racecourse to Guemes Channel, normally off-limits due to the commercial traffic that uses it. Amidst the anchored tankers waiting for a berth at the refinery, racing began in a steady breeze and made for a picture-perfect afternoon on the water.

The wind on Thursday was nonexistent in the morning, but slowly filled in from a familiar direction and gave the fleet a wonderful afternoon of racing with some very strategic moments as the breeze built and the current swirled through the racecourse. Fleets got two races in before the wind died off shortly before 3 p.m., sending folks in with plenty of time to put their boats away before the party started.

Friday again was light with the strongest currents of the week, a challenge for some boats to even leave the marina in the morning with such shallow water. After briefly exploring the normal racing area the fleet sailed the day before, the race committee shifted back to Guemes Channel but was met with over three knots of current with a slow-building westerly breeze. With no wind anywhere else in the area, they worked to get a racecourse set, and the call

came over the radio that they would attempt to start under the provision that if races became unrealistic or unfair due to the current, they would call them off. The first two fleets started, short-tacking the shoreline with only inches under the keels to stay out of the current. Unfortunately, the smaller and slower boats could not make way against the current when it was time for them to start. The decision was made to send the remaining fleets into the dock and shorten the course for the boats still racing.

Race Week has a reputation for being a top-level racing event and a top-level party. After having limited social events for the past two renditions, the legendary rum tent was back this year and did not disappoint. A different band played every night, from the twangy tunes of Race Week legends Gertrude’s Hearse, who reunited for one night only to play the event, to an ABBA cover band that had the crustiest old sailors singing along. In addition to the official events, the town of Anacortes has a lively social atmosphere with plenty of activities for racers and supporters alike.

It's safe to say Anacortes Race Week has cemented itself as a bucket list sailing event combining competitive racing, stunning natural beauty, and legendary shoreside activities. It allows sailors of all skill levels to unite, enjoy the sport they love, and create lasting memories on and off the water. Next year’s event is set for June 24-28 and is already stacking up to be a banner year, with some of the region’s top crews putting it on their calendar.

Claim to Fame

Imbibe in a little Roche Harbor history with this take on the Madrona Grill’s fabled Fluffy Duck cocktail.

Hanging outside the entrance of Roche Harbor’s Madrona Grill is a simple wooden sign declaring the bustling pub as the “Home of the Fluffy Duck.” If you haven’t had a “Duck on the Deck,” as the locals put it, you can’t say you’ve experienced the spirit of Roche Harbor.

Little is known about the origin of this famed cocktail, but legend tells of a traveling bartender, who in the early 1970s visited Roche Harbor looking for work. During his job interview, he stopped the questioning and exclaimed: “I am the finest bartender in all the land. I will create a cocktail so famous boaters will voyage from near and far to taste its brilliance.” With one leap, he vaulted over the bar, filled a glass with a blur of ingredients, and with the flip of his wrist and a pretty-boy wink, a creamy orange concoction appeared in a frosty glass with a glistening cherry on top. As if in a hypnotic trance, the manager placed his lips to the glass, took a sip of the mysterious cocktail, pounded his fist on the bar, and is said to have proclaimed: “This is the finest cocktail I have tasted, and from this day forward we will call it The Fluffy Duck.” Two days later, the traveling bartender left with the hostess, the manager’s yacht, a few cases of vodka and gin, and was never seen or heard from again. Every year, the Madrona Grill tries to get a little closer to the exact recipe first created by the mysterious bartender. This recipe—which appears in the cookbook ROCHE: A Culinary Journey through San Juan Island’s Illustrious Harbor, which I had the privilege of working on with Rich Komen, Brent Snow, and Chef Bill Shaw—is the closest one yet.

The Fluffy Duck

Serves 1

½ ounce Ketel One vodka

½ ounce Tanqueray gin

½ ounce Bacardi light rum

½ ounce fresh-squeezed orange juice

½ ounce grenadine

½ ounce heavy cream

¼ ounce Galliano

Whipped cream, orange slice, and a maraschino cherry for garnish

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add the vodka, gin, rum, orange juice, grenadine, and heavy cream. Place the top on the shaker and shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Pour into a frozen pint glass, then float a splash of Galliano over the top. Garnish with whipped cream, a slice of orange on the side of the glass, and crown with a maraschino cherry.
