And while winter’s gloom might still have a hold on us in terms of the weather, we boaters also know that January heralds a beacon of light at the end of the tunnel: It’s boat show season, baby. Yes, the beloved event that is the Seattle Boat Show returns early next month, running February 2-10. Fittingly, this month’s issue looks ahead in anticipation. Seattle Boat Show Returns Next Month Featuring Extended Seminar Schedule It’s a new year, with new expectations and new horizons to explore. What better way to kick off 2024 than a return to the full-strength iteration of the Seattle Boat Show? Rolling at the red carpet at the indoor Lumen Field Event Center and in the outdoor environs of Bell Harbor Marina, the nine-day event will feature hundreds of new vessels to see up close. For the first time since the pandemic, the Seattle Boat Show will return to its previous format of using three separate stages for the in-person fishing and boating seminars. In total, the show will offer a staggering 124 seminars to choose from—a 43 percent increase from the 2023 seminar program. Starting with the Friday Opening Night “Uncorked” wine-tasting event at Lumen Field Event Center on February 2, the show will run through Saturday, February 10, and include some special events in between. For instance, Monday, February 5, will be “Women’s Day” at the show, when all women attendees can attend for free with a reservation of an online ticket. Participants can see boating presentations and free seminars presented by some of the most experienced and talented women in the maritime industry. In addition, the Boat Show is creating a new sailing panel just for Women’s Day, featuring local women sailors who will take part in a Q&A session about getting started in boating. (Find more info in this month’s feature beginning on page 47.) Those interested in boating career opportunities can also attend the Marine Industry Career Fair on February 5, from 9 to 11 a.m. This fair will include exhibitors from a wide range of employers in the recreational boating business, such as boat builders, yacht outfitters, boat yards, and many others.

One of the most popular features of the event is Boat Show University (BSU), which offers dozens of in-depth boating courses that can be taken in by purchasing either a single-day course or a 9-Day Seminar Package. Some of this year’s BSU topics will cover boating safety, fishing techniques, navigation instruction, cruising tips, and the latest technology innovations. The single-day BSU courses include a two-hour course, a single-day admission to the Boat Show and—new this year—a complimentary beer or wine at the new BSU experts’ reception held every evening from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Seahawks Tunnel Club. Those who wish to purchase a 9-Day Seminar Package will have admission to every show day, every BSU course, a complimentary drink at each expert reception, and online access to the recorded BSU courses until May 1, 2024. An expert guest, sponsored by the Waggoner Cruising Guide, will attend each of the evening receptions, which will vary in theme. Other Boat Show features include “Twofer Tuesday” ticket specials, a “Dogs on Deck Thursday” event allowing pooches to come aboard for the day, a “Sales & Ales” craft beer night on February 9, a Kids Aqua Zone area full of family-friendly activities, and a raffle to win 2024 season tickets for the Seattle Seahawks at the Be Whale Wise/Soundwatch booth. The Seattle Boat Show is the largest such event on the West Coast. Port of Seattle to Clean Up Its Act with Environmental Legacy Fund The shores of Seattle’s working waterfront are likely to look cleaner and healthier over the next decade thanks to a new Environmental Legacy Fund set up by the Port of Seattle last November. The fund will be an account into which the Port will deposit a portion of property taxes that will be dedicated for cleanup of historical industrial pollution on its properties. The Environmental Legacy Fund will invest in research, investigation, design, and cleanup that could cost more than $100 million over the next decade. Ultimately, the Port said, some of the remediation costs may be covered by polluters and responsible parties, state grants, and insurance. At the outset, the Port will seed this new fund with a $30 million investment of already collected tax levy dollars, which will be used to pay for 18 of the Port’s active environmental remediation projects to improve water quality, support salmon and marine mammal recovery, and restore habitat. Many of these decades-long projects are already improving the quality of life for residents through safer shorelines for recreation, boating, and fishing. “By dedicating resources now, we can offer taxpayers predictability and stability, while still meeting future responsibilities,” said Port of Seattle Commissioner Ryan Calkins. One such effort that will be helped by the fund will be the continuing remediation of a former barrel-cleaning and auto-wrecking facility near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Between 2007 and 2020, the Port worked with the Washington State Department of Ecology to remove contaminated soil and sediment to improve groundwater, protect wildlife and local residential properties, and restore a wetland in the Miller Creek watershed. Another Port-owned parcel of waterfront property in the South Park neighborhood used to be the home of an asphalt shingle manufacturing operation. After more than two decades of cleanup and restoration work, the Port created what is now known as the Duwamish River People’s Park, 14 acres of shoreline habitat for Chinook salmon and public shoreline access. In the first year of monitoring, researchers found more than 7,300 juvenile salmon on the site, including 250 juvenile native Chinook salmon and extensive, healthy marsh vegetation. 24

One of the primary future targets of these remediation efforts by the Port will be Terminal 25 South cargo facility, which is located on Harbor Island, adjacent to the heavily industrialized east waterway section of the Duwamish Waterway. In 2022, the Port signed an order with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to conduct a cleanup of the site and the creation of a restored estuarian and riparian habitat area for fish and wildlife in a marine-freshwater transition zone. The Terminal 25 South site, the Port said, is expected to provide conservation credits for impacts to special status salmonid species listed under the Endangered Species Act. The project would re-establish between nine and 10 acres of riparian, emergent marsh, mudflat, and sub-tidal habitat. To date, the Port of Seattle has already completed several nationally recognized successes in habitat restoration over the years. Some notable examples include: • Restoration of more than 31 acres of fish and wildlife habitat at 16 sites throughout the Duwamish River, Elliott Bay, Puget Sound, and Lake Washington Ship Canal. • Improved light penetration in shallow water areas by replacing solid piers with grated structures and removing overwater structures and dock pilings. • Removal of in-water barriers to migrating juvenile fish, including a derelict ferry and sunken marina. • Replacement of more than 10,000 creosote-treated wooden pilings with fewer numbers of concrete and steel pilings. • Cleanup of more than 100,000 tons of contaminated sediments in Elliott Bay and the Duwamish Waterway, including the dredging of the East Waterway. •Creation and enhancement of 177 acres of wetland, including 350,000 new plantings. • Enhancement of two miles of stream habitat. Maritime Blue Wins Federal Grant to ‘Build to Scale’ Blue Economy Washington Maritime Blue got a significant shot in the arm in November when it was chosen for a $1.75 million federal “Build to Scale” grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce to support maritime and ocean-related businesses, known collectively as the Blue Economy. Washington Maritime Blue, an independent, nonprofit partnership between maritime companies, the public sector, and research and training organizations, said it will use the grant to scale up its efforts to accelerate the Pacific Northwest’s path towards “an equitable, sustainable, and profitable maritime and ocean sector.” The Build to Scale grants, selected by Commerce’s Economic Development Administration, were awarded in 2023 to 60 organizations across the country, located in 36 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Maritime Blue was the only such organization in Washington state to be given the EDA grant. The federal grants, which total $53 million nationwide, are given in support of various innovative technology entrepreneurs in the maritime industry and will be matched by another $55 million in funding to come from an array of public/private sources. “This achievement speaks to the strength of our cluster members and support partners and the projects they are invested in supporting,” said Joshua Berger, founder and CEO of Washington Maritime Blue. The current plan for Maritime Blue is to use the federal and matching funds to bring together its more than 100 active members to develop new market opportunities, technology development, collaboration, and entrepreneurship. The partnership currently includes two incubators and two accelerator programs dedicated to data analysis, impact assessment, and new market engagement in the Blue Economy sector.

Awarding of the grant is expected to boost Maritime Blue’s Blue Wind initiative, launched in October 2023, with the goal of expanding sustainable employment opportunities supporting the expected growth of offshore wind projects along the West Coast. These sectors will involve shipbuilding, maritime operations, technology research, wind turbine and components manufacturing, and materials transportation to offshore sites. The offshore wind industry, which Berger described as “one of the largest maritime opportunities since the advent of the shipping container,” is projected to grow into a $70 billion industry in the U.S. in the next decade, according to a report by an independent industry group called the Special Initiative on Offshore Wind. The report said it expects that private supply-chain investments in offshore wind projects totaling $109 billion will be made by 2030, adding that more than 65 percent of the nation’s wind energy will eventually be generated from floating offshore wind turbines. Blue Wind, along with other similar projects in California and Oregon, is being considered to help meet President Biden’s ambitious goals for the expansion of offshore wind power capacity to 30 gigawatts by 2030. Washington State, however, has yet to define a process for considering offshore wind generation off its coast. “Offshore wind is another generational shift bringing a truly all-encompassing new industry to this country like the automobile, aerospace, and software industries,” said Sloane Perras, vice president, Foss Offshore Wind, a partner in the Blue Wind initiative. “Offshore wind generates high-paying blue-collar and white-collar jobs throughout the United States.” For more information on Washington Maritime Blue, and its projects, please visit: maritimeblue.org.

SS Dix Wreck Identified (Again) By Rockfish Team The infamous wreck of the passenger steamer SS Dix, which took the lives of nearly 40 people near Alki Point more than a century ago, may finally be identified by local marine salvage company Rockfish, Inc. While Rockfish was not the first to discover evidence of a sunken ship at the wreck site, it may be the first to confirm its provenance via its latest search efforts. The location of what looks to be the wreck off Duwamish Head was initially discovered in 2011 by a team of local underwater explorers. However, after analysis of the site was made using submersibles made by Everett-based OceanGate, the team determined that the sonar images they had recorded on the bottom of Puget Sound did not line up with photographs of the SS Dix, so the mystery of the doomed vessel remained seemingly unsolved. Twelve years later, Rockfish CEO Jeff Hummel said he may now have proof that the same sunken vessel is indeed the last resting place of the Dix. Since 2011, the site has become a well-known yet officially unidentified wreck that Rockfish would often dive on to test out its latest underwater equipment. After analyzing the wreck with a nonprofit group called the Northwest Shipwreck Alliance (NSA) over several years, Hummel recently concluded that the OceanGate team in 2011 had been analyzing the sonar images from the wrong vantage point. “What they thought was the stern was actually the bow,” Hummel said to King-5 TV in November 2023. "When you take the image and flip it around, and then you do the comparison of the features from a photograph to what we see on the sonar, we get this perfect alignment of all the different features on the wreck.” Looking at more-recent sonar images from Rockfish’s remotely operated underwater vehicles, NSA said the 102-foot-long wreck appears to be sitting upright on the bottom about 600 feet down. The wreck itself occurred on the evening of November 18, 1906,

when the SS Dix—then a new member of Seattle’s Mosquito Fleet of small wooden boats that sent passengers back and forth across Puget Sound—was headed west from Seattle to Port Blakley on Bainbridge Island with an estimated 77 people on board. While en route, the 130-ton Dix collided with the much larger, 1,071-ton three-masted steam schooner SS Jeanie heading south toward Tacoma with a heavy load of iron ore. The collision caused the smaller Dix to heel violently to port, toppling many of its upper-deck passengers into the Sound and flooding the hull. While the only lightly damaged Jeanie and other nearby vessels made attempts to rescue people from the frigid waters, the Dix went to the bottom in a matter of minutes, taking with it at least 39 people, most of whom were trapped within the lower deck. After 117 years, the Dix disaster still represents the single greatest loss of life on Puget Sound. Today, Hummel said Rockfish and NSA are trying to negotiate with government agencies to help protect the wreck permanently, adding that they have no plans to recover any artifacts from the Dix. Because no bodies were ever recovered from the wreck, NSA said the Dix should be left alone. “We believe the best way to protect and honor it is to tell its story and leave the wreck where it lies,” read an NSA statement. “It was and still is their gravesite, and we will be honoring that.” In November 2022, Rockfish and NSA made an earlier notable discovery of the SS Pacific wreck off Neah Bay on the Washington coast, earning salvage rights to the site. The sinking of the SS Pacific is the worst maritime catastrophe in the Pacific Northwest, claiming an estimated 375 lives. Anacortes Chamber of Commerce Marine Trades Committee Donates $28K For Youth Boating Nonprofits Last month, the Marine Trades Committee of the Anacortes Chamber of Commerce donated a total of $28,000 to nonprofit groups in support of youth boating programs across Skagit County. Funds for the Chamber support came from the proceeds collected at the 2023 Anacortes Yacht & Boat Show held last May. The donation represents the largest contribution the Chamber has made in support of boating industry initiatives and marine workforce development in Anacortes and Skagit County. Under the Chamber agreement, the Anacortes Waterfront Alliance will receive $18,000 to purchase three new Tera sailboats to be used in youth-oriented sailing classes. The boats will also be added to group’s community-access rental fleet and to the Anacortes Middle School racing team. The new funds will enable the city to attract “more ‘future boaters of America,’ as I call them, on the water,” said Mary Trester, executive director of the Anacortes Waterfront Alliance. The remaining $10,000 of the donation will go to Skagit Valley College’s Marine Technology program to buy outboard motors for training purposes. As we launch into a new year, Cruiser Yachts—a U.S.-based yacht builder that recently celebrated 70 years of continuous operations and proudly crafts their prestigious vessels in Wisconsin—has debuted a sporty update to its popular 46 Cantius model, with the new 2024 version now available in Washington state via Silver Seas Yachts. With sleek lines that are built for speed, the 46 is a mix of power and elegance, with remarkably spacious cabin accommodations for a vessel of its size. Entering from the stern, the cockpit is notable for its wide swim step that can be lowered below the water level, allowing easy access for swimming or personal watercraft usage. Built into the stern transom is a hide-away grill station, so outdoor cookouts can take place among mingling guests. A stainless steel safety gate separates the swim step from the cockpit a few steps above, which features forward-facing, L-shaped bench seating with gray ultra-leather exterior upholstery. A small beverage refrigerator and a triangular tabletop provide more amenities for social gatherings. While the open-air cockpit has unobstructed views aft, the 46 Cantius also includes an optional retractable sunshade for hot summer days. Moving forward past sliding glass doors, the modernist salon has satin-finished, light walnut wood interior paneling throughout, and includes a love seat and storage cupboards to starboard. To port is the

galley, which features a microwave, sink, refrigerator, freezer, stovetop, and convection oven, along with an open layout to encourage conversations with guests during meal preparation. Forward of the galley is a dinette seating area to port surrounding a dining table opposite the helm station. (The dinette can also cleverly be converted to a third berth.) The entire salon area is flooded with natural light through large windows, providing spectacular views from every part of the interior. At the starboard helm, a suite of Garmin navigation electronics includes two glass cockpit screens, a depth sounder, radar, a chart plotter, autopilot, a compass, GPS, and VHF. The vessel is also equipped with Seakeeper gyro-stabilization technology for a smooth ride, along with joystick steering and position hold controls, making the 46 easy to operate, while offering the latest in boating tech. Down below, through a passageway beside the helm, the mid-ship, full-beam master stateroom includes an island king-size berth, a flat-screen TV, an en suite head with separate shower, and a cozy lounge and sofa to port. A vented washer/dryer combo is also housed in the master. The forward VIP stateroom at the bow also has its own head and shower, a walk-around berth, and side-bench seating. The 46 Cantius is powered by twin Volvo IPS 600 diesels, with a total output of 440hp. The vessel cruises at about 21 knots and can sprint up to 27 knots with a 226-nautical-mile range.

After nearly 60 years of cruising in and chartering through Pacific Northwest waters, this beautifully crafted, classic deepwater vessel on offer from Chuck Hovey Yachts is more than ready for her next chapter.

Here’s one you don’t see every day. This classic deepwater cruiser, with nearly 60 years of history behind it, is the perfect 12-passenger vessel for extended voyages, with seven cabins, six heads, and a range of 2,300 nautical miles. In fact, sale of the aluminum-hulled vessel, frame-stiffened for blue-water cruises, comes with a turn-key Alaska charter business off the Kenai Peninsula and the waters of Prince William Sound that the boat has been employed in for the past several decades. Designed by J.B. Hargrave, the vessel was constructed by the Burger Boat Co. in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in 1965 as a pleasure craft originally named Aquarius. The largest all-welded aluminum yacht of its time, the since-renamed Sea Star has been well-maintained, retaining its eye-catching, mid-century charm over the years. With a slight rise at the bow, the Sea Star cuts a handsome profile with a long teak foredeck, a bench seat/deck locker, and a cushioned settee just forward of the pilothouse, providing spectacular open-air views. Covered teak side passageways provide easy movement from bow to stern, along with side doors to the interior salons and the aft deck, which can be enclosed in inclement weather. Within the aft deck is a full-beam dining salon, featuring an expandable teak table for up to 12 people. The dining salon also includes a cushioned settee, a wet bar and beverage refrigerator, and a water/coffee/tea station. Moving forward, the main salon includes built-in cabinetry, an entertainment center, carpeted flooring, and seating for ten people. The Sea Star’s large, “Pullman-style” galley is commercial grade and comes equipped with an array of modern appliances, such as a four-burner GE electric stove, a double sink and separate prep sink, two refrigerators and freezers, a microwave, a trash-compactor, and a garbage disposal. Adjacent to the galley are a Whirlpool Duet washer and dryer.

The forward pilothouse includes an elevated, upholstered bench seat and chart table just aft of the helm. The single helm station features a 36-inch wooden ship’s wheel, VHF radios, and Mitsubishi and Iridium satellite systems. Other navigation equipment includes a Simrad autopilot, Furuno radars, depth sounders, and fish finders, and Dell and Argonaut G615 displays. To handle oceans swells, the vessel also includes a Jespar Stabilizer System. Atop the pilothouse and main salon is a voluminous boat deck, with room for a forward mast, an exhaust funnel, two pairs of boat davits for a 15’ Highfield RIB with a Yamaha outboard and a 10’ Achilles RIB with a Nissan outboard for use as tenders. Aft of the davits is a storage rack for a 30-person life raft and five kayaks. Curving stairways lead below from the salon and pilothouse to the four guest cabins, each having its own built-in dressers, screened portholes, en suite heads, and enclosed showers. All the named guest cabins—Puffin, Sandpiper, Kittiwake, and Osprey—can accommodate between two and four people in a variety of configurations using twin, queen-sized, and bunk-bed berths. Three more smaller crew cabins for up to five people are located toward the bow, along with a small dinette area and two heads with showers. Given its 58-year history, the Sea Star has had numerous overhauls, maintenance work, and upgrades over the years. The most recent work in 2022 and 2023 includes a fresh coat of paint topsides, a rebuild of the bow thruster hydraulic motor, a new Flo-Scan fuel-monitoring system, new propeller shafts and cutlass bearings, renewed exterior varnish and brightwork, new aluminum anodes, and replaced portlights in guest staterooms. Sea Star’s twin diesel, turbo-charged Caterpillar D343As produce 400hp each (8,679 hours port; 8,877 hours starboard), allowing it to cruise at 10 knots and top out at 16 knots. 45

My company, Prism Graphics, was originally founded in 1976 by boat owners who were artists. I took over the company in 1993 because I love to be the creative artist I am and be able to work on boats. I grew up on sailboats, racing and cruising in the PNW with my family. I know the challenges that come when working on them. Not only do we know what we’re doing when it comes to these unique challenges, I live on a boat, we regularly cruise in the Puget Sound and San Juans. I know I’m going to run into our customers, and I love it when I do.” [ Why Now ] “Marine vinyl is a viable alternative to painting, both in boat interiors as well as exterior. It also offers some significant cost savings; the cost of wrapping something in vinyl can often be 50% or less the cost of painting. In this seminar, we'll be sharing stories of adventures, challenges, and preparations that made this journey a success.” [Expert Bio] “Neither of us grew up sailing or fixing boats, so when we decided we wanted to sail the world, we first attended nine months of classes at the Marine Technology Center in Anacortes, Washington. We both graduated with professional certifications in boat repair, which enabled us to safely and swiftly evaluate the boat we purchased and confidently address maintenance issues ourselves. We also invested in an offshore sail training expedition with John Neal through Mahina Offshore Services that gave us the training and safety ethos we needed to feel comfortable heading offshore. Our careful selection plus the

completion of proper education and training prepared us for this ambitious undertaking, and no doubt fueled our success. And, we’re just getting started! This cruise showed us that we're capable and that we love offshore sailing and ocean cruising. As soon as we finish our winter refit layover, we’ll be heading out on an even bigger adventure that we hope to share at the 2025 show.” [Why Now] “While it's not necessarily cutting edge, per say, this is a rare cruising itinerary. Very few cruising boats make the journey back north once they’ve chased the warm weather south. So few that the Prince Rupert Yacht Club could only remember one other cruising boat arriving from a big Pacific loop, and they happen to be friends of ours! The offshore route to get to Washington was certainly longer than heading straight up along the coast, but with proper preparation, it can be a fun offshore adventure rather than an uncomfortable coastal bash. Current El Nino conditions are affecting both Mexico weather patterns and sailing conditions offshore, making it even more important to be flexible and adaptable with your cruising plans and goals.”

In this seminar, we’ll look at different types of tenders, from classic rowboats and sailing dinghies to contemporary inflatables and RIBs, and talk through the pros and cons of each and learn who is the ideal user for each type of vessel. A dinghy is a humble little boat that’s often treated as an afterthought, but it is a surprisingly wonderful way to make the “big boat” even better. A good dinghy helps you tailor your boat to your tastes, shows your personality, and creates the lifestyle you seek whether you’re a serious cruiser or a weekend warrior.” [ Expert Bio ] “As the general manager of Gig Harbor Boat Works, and the daughter of the original founder, I’ve spent a lot of time rowing and sailing dinghies over the course of my life. One of my favorite parts of my job is helping people figure out which dinghy is right for them, talking through how they picture themselves using their boat, looking at the mounting options they have on their yacht, and envisioning how the tender’s design can complement their mothership. Even those who don’t have the inclination or budget to own a yacht—who just want a standalone small boat that’s enjoyable in its own right, or are curious about rowing or sailing—will find this seminar helpful. Additionally, when it comes to traditional dinghies in particular, a lot of people fall in love with the classic aesthetic. But at the same time, they find them intimidating—perhaps because they are unfamiliar with them, are concerned they’ll be too ‘tippy,’ or are afraid the learning curve will be too steep. This will be a great opportunity to separate fact from fiction and learn what makes different boats row, sail, or motor better than others. I have been a part of dozens and dozens of owner-built stitch and glue boat projects. I've helped all walks of life build their boat, and you can (build your own boat) too.” [Why Now] “Boating should be accessible to us all. And what better way to get on the water than in a boat you build. The prevalence of CNC shops, and then frequency in which designs are drawn in CAD, makes accurate and complex shapes now quite easy. If you're building from a kit, often getting comfortable with handling epoxy and fiberglass is the biggest hurdle, not the shaping of the parts. It’s also worth noting that it doesn't take a massive and well-equipped shop to build a stitch and glue boat, and that boat construction isn't all about sanding. I would encourage the reader to drop the following assumptions: building a boat is too complex, too steeped in tradition, too expensive, out of the question. Those aren’t true. There is nothing like getting out on the water in a boat you made.”

Elsie Hulsizer’s portion will entail how to acclimate a land cat to a boat, how to keep them safe, and what to bring just for them. “Lots of cats sail with their people but they're rarely visible and cat owners are often unsure what to do to make their cats comfortable,” she says. “This will fill in a gap for boaters who want to take their pets, particularly cats, with them on the water.”

WENDY HINMAN & GARTH WILCOX BUILDING A MODERN WOODEN BOAT February 10; 1:15 p.m.; Stage #2 [Cliff Notes] Wendy Hinman and Garth Wilcox once sailed 34,000 miles aboard Velella, a light displacement 31-footer. Now, drawing on Wilcox’s skills as a professional naval architect and experience gleaned in a circumnavigation of the world in a 40-foot double ender that barely survived a shipwreck, the pair built the cruising boat of Wilcox’s dreams. Learn about the process they undertook to construct a 38-foot boat in their backyard workshop. “Garth has created many workarounds for challenges he's faced in building and outfitting this boat,” states Hinman. “His creativity and high standards are visible in every aspect of this boat's design and build. [ kiNg Of The beAch ] There’s nothing quite like standing on top of the Observation Tower at Westport Marina to watch a king tide roll in from the Pacific. These seasonally occurring tides, which sometimes coincide with winter winds for added extra oomph, put on a real show as an influx of surf hits the break wall, sending seawater high in the air. The ocean roars with a vengeance, the sea spray kisses your face with the flying salt—it’s all something to behold and the tower provides a front-row seat to the action, while still being relatively protected. This month, you can take in the biggest tides of the season on January 11th, 12th, and 13th, around mid-day, with the January 12th tide expected to be the largest swell of the year at a whopping 10.9 feet. Elsewhere you can still experience winter’s often raw power among the sand dunes at Westhaven State Park nearby, where “wind leaning” is known to be a bit of a recreational sport; layer up, dig in your heels, and try to stay upright in the blow!

[ liGht thE WAy ] Time to get your steps in, 135 of them to be exact: That’s how many stairs you’ll climb to reach the top of the Grays Harbor Lighthouse, which stretches towards the sky to an impressive height of 107 feet, making it the state’s tallest. Completed in 1898, the historic lighthouse recently celebrated its 125th anniversary year and still boasts a wealth of original features and details. The walls at the base of the octagonal structure are four feet thick, tapering off to an 18-inch width as you climb the original, self-supporting staircase. Forged of cast-iron crafted by a San Francisco-based boiler works manufacturer, this stunning circular case also features artistic landing brackets that are worth an inspection when you need a breather along the way. At the lantern room level, you’ll also find the original clamshell-shaped Fresnel lens built in Paris circa 1895, a rarity in lighthouses nowadays, and at the very top, you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with 360-degree views of the ocean and area beaches. Do note: The lighthouse is only open Fridays through Sundays in the winter, so plan accordingly; visitors who can provide proof of valid admission to the nearby affiliated Westport Maritime Museum can receive $1 off the very inexpensive $5 fee. [ fiNdeRs, keEpeRs ] The beachcombing doesn’t get much better than on these sandy shores, which stretch for miles. Not only do those aforementioned king tides bring in all sorts of flotsam and jetsam to be discovered, but treasure hunters might also be able to spy one of the thousand Japanese fishing floats up for grabs during the annual #Wildfloats hunt. Beginning this month and going through Memorial Day weekend, a flotilla of floats will be released on area beaches by local “float fairies” for beachcombers to uncover and take home as keepsakes. Put on by the Westport South Beach Historical Society, the beloved annual event draws locals and visitors alike to South Beach in pursuit of the beautiful floats dropped in the drink in batches that then come ashore with the tide. The glass floats can often be found right on the sand or lurking amongst the pieces of driftwood that dot the shoreline. The orbs—which

were mostly sourced from tsunami clean-up in Japan—are true working floats made from recycled sake bottles and thus found in a range of gorgeous green hues. If you are looking for tips, stop by the Westport Maritime Museum (more details in the next section!) to check out the collection of South Beach-combed floats as well as unique collector floats before setting out on the hunt. [ muSeuMs Of curIosItiEs ] The Westport Maritime Museum, located across five different former U.S. Coast Guard station buildings near the Westport Marina, is a classic haunt for maritime enthusiasts and it’s little wonder why. Chock full of exhibits that explore the history of South Beach, the aforementioned Grays Harbor Lighthouse, Pacific Northwest divisions of the U.S. Coast Guard, area shipwrecks, rescue operations, and local whaling and fishing industries, the museum also highlights natural history elements like beach erosion, marine mammals, and even a knot-tying display. (As a tip, the incredibly knowledgeable staffers are always ready to help, even beyond museum-related questions, whether you need directions or a restaurant recommendation.) Twelve miles north you’ll find another favorite: the International Mermaid Museum, a decidedly quirky outpost that aims to educate about ocean ecology, all wrapped up with a side of mermaid mythology. There’s as much to peruse outside as in, as the museum boasts an impressive display of outdoor sculptures from local artists and is located on the same grounds as the award-winning Westport Winery Garden Resort. Museum guests are welcome to wander the 15 acres of gardens there or enjoy a bite to eat at the Seagrass Grill. Finally, for another look at one of Washington’s interesting industries, pop into the historic Cranberry Museum. Originally built in 1933, the museum building houses an array of cranberry products and provisions. You’ll also find a few historic Furford Pickers, a harvesting device invented here in 1957 and still utilized in cranberry production today.

[ seA FAre ] If you are in town to take in a king tide, you’d be remiss not to dine at The King Tide, a family-owned bakery and pub located near the marina that offers down-home, stick-to-your-ribs style fare like grilled cheese and tomato soup, chicken pot pie, meatloaf, and jambalaya, in addition to nightly dinner specials. (Weekenders rejoice: The Saturday lasagna and Sunday evening pot roasts are real standouts.) On the same block, you’ll find Merino’s Seafood, a longtime standby for locally caught seafood and canned provisions like smoked salmon and albacore tuna; take those home for later after you lunch on some of the marketplace’s truly stellar fish n’ chips, a Dungeness crab melt, or really go for it with a helping of hearty chowder poutine. For a unique fusion of Hawaiian meets Pacific Northwest meets Southern barbecue cuisine, pop over to Aloha Alabama on the next block, where you can savor bright and fresh poke bowls, crispy fish tacos, or pulled pork platters, all under one very charming roof. [ caTch a wavE ] The surfing community is all in on Westport. One of the more reliable spots in the state to catch a wave, there is not one, not two, but three main surf breaks all located in the area, they are known as the Jetty, the Cove, and the Groins. The Jetty, located at Westhaven State Park, is often the most happening as the beach faces due west and picks up more swell than the

other two spots. Locals and advanced surfers can often be spied taking off from the so-called “First Peak,” a wave that bounces off the jetty with reliability; beginners would do well to contact the local BigFoot Surf School that offers classes and lessons for newbies in this spot as well. (The state park also recently renovated the bathrooms and showers located in the parking area; a nice feature after a chilly ride.) Around the corner from the Jetty is a crescent-shaped stretch of sand and seemingly quiet bay known as the Cove. During the summer, this is a great spot for stand-up paddle boarding, and in winter and spring, swells are large enough to carry waves into the bay and all the way to shore. Then, located past the marina at the northern end of Westport is the break nicknamed the Groins. These series of five rock jetties were built to protect the marina from the constant swells that enter Grays Harbor. Here, quality rides await those willing to climb over the rocks and paddle out. Reeling 'Em In Sneak peek: Fishing expert JAMIE PETH of ANGLERS UNLIMITED channels her personal passions for angling into three brand-new fishing seminars for this year’s Seattle Boat Show. NWY: What do you personally most enjoy about fishing here in the Northwest? JP: I love to learn! The waters in our area will teach you something new every time you go out on the boat. Whether it’s your first time out or you have been fishing for decades, there’s always something to be discovered. Being around and on the water gives me a level of freedom and joy that is frankly hard to put into words. I grew up walking the beaches in South Puget Sound and have always spent time near the water, but never actually on a boat until I was in my 20s. When I caught my first salmon, I was o-fish-ally hooked (pun intended). To me, fishing is so much more than dragging a line, it’s about the experience, the wildlife, the views, and the potential opportunity to create epic memories for the people with you on the boat. Fishing will humble you and frustrate you, but when you actually land that first fish, then dial in your process and start consistently landing fish, there is truly nothing like it. The lessons you receive on the water go way beyond fishing, they are lessons for life. NWY: For this year’s Seattle Boat Show, you will moderate several new fishing seminars, including one composed of a panel of experts for an open Q+A. Tell us how you went about pulling this all-star cast together for this seminar? JP: I am super fired up to bring some of our local San Juan Island fishing experts to the Seattle Boat Show stage. As someone who did not grow up fishing, I quickly found out that “googling it” can only get you so far. An awesome network of experts that are willing to share their decades of experience can really accelerate your success on the water, which is why I

was excited to bring together this panel of incredible fishermen that spend a lot of time honing their craft and are all mentors I have learned from personally. Bring any and all questions for this power hour, it’ll be a fun one! NWY: What is the inspiration behind your “Reel Women Fish” panel? What can we expect to glean at this two-part session at the show geared toward women in salmon fishing? JP: There’s something special about sharing the love of the sport of fishing with other like-minded women. I have been lucky enough to meet and learn from several incredible ladies that continue to inspire me as a fisherman and as a leader. The inspiration for this session came from conversations with women over the years and my own personal journey learning how to fish. When I started really getting into salmon fishing, I looked for every opportunity to get out on the water and connect with other anglers to learn as much as I could. In 2014, I found Tom Nelson’s Salmon University workshop through a Google search and signed up immediately. At the event, I met Terry Rudnick during one of the breaks and asked him what he would recommend for newbies like me to do to become a better fisherman. He recommended that I join Puget Sound Anglers, so I did. I joined the chapter board, became club secretary, joined the state board, fished every local derby I could to learn more and surrounded myself with other anglers just as passionate as I was about the sport. I started noticing that there really weren’t that many ladies involved in these meetings or events, but those that were all had similar stories. There was always an element of loving something, but needing to prove themselves or overcome obstacles

to do it and become respected as capable. The more conversations I had with women that loved to fish, the more I realized that it wasn’t just me that felt like the “the odd one out” in the group. This seminar is designed to inspire women that want to learn to fish and connect with others that, like them, really enjoy the self-discovery the sport gives us. Let’s be real, we do things a little differently than the guys; those are the salmon fishing strategies this powerhouse panel will be sharing. NWY: You are also hosting a seminar entitled “Couples Fishing Therapy: How to Create a Winning Fishing Experience for Couples”. What kinds of tips and tricks can couples expect to walk away with after this chat? JP: This is another idea I have had rattling around in my head because of how many conversations I heard from friends, couples, or spouses about bad days on the water. I have experienced both ends of the spectrum— terrible days on the boat with my other half and some of the most epic memories of my life that both Scott and I will never forget! It all comes down to setting up clear expectations and agreements before you ever leave the dock, especially if one person is more experienced than the other. We are going to share what has worked exceptionally well for Scott and I as fishing partners and life partners as well as some pretty great tips from several other fish-obsessed couples. You will come away from this seminar with tools and ideas on ways to have a blast the next time you go out on the water with your significant other. Whether you are the primary operator of the boat, or the partner looking to get more experience, there will be something for you in this session. About the Expert: Growing up, I spent a lot of time on the beach in Des Moines and fishing from the pier. My first boat came along later in life, and I soon realized there was a lot to figure out about fishing the San Juans and the Salish Sea. That boat came with a manual cannon downrigger and

sent me on a journey to figure out how to use it for salmon fishing. That first fish ruined me. I was HOOKED on fishing after landing that first salmon! I wanted to become better and more consistent as a fisherman, so I looked for answers online, attended Salmon University, and joined Puget Sound Anglers. Then, a coworker’s husband became my ultimate fishing mentor. Jerry Thomas would send drawings of how to rig my gear right, maps that helped me understand tides in the San Juan Islands, and answer any questions I had about where to go next weekend and what bait to use. The more success I had fishing, the more fun it became to take others out and share the experience with them. Helping someone else land their first fish was the catalyst for the original Anglers Unlimited group. I knew through experience that there was a need for beginners out there. Anglers Unlimited is a group for newer anglers to find answers. We have taken our passion for fishing and the decades of experience between us and created an in-person learning experience for those that want to accelerate their success and skip all of the harder lessons! Happy New Year MARK YUASA kicks off 2024 with fresh projections for the state’s upcoming halibut fishery. Hard to believe another year of fishing is in the rearview mirror, and while I’m quick to reminisce, I’m already looking forward to seeing what’s in store for 2024. One exciting development in the not-too-distant future will be the state’s halibut fisheries, stretching from Neah Bay south to Ilwaco, and within Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, as early indications show the 2024 season should be on par with previous years. After two public meetings in late summer and fall, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) submitted their 2024 recommendations that were adopted by the Pacific Fishery Management Council (PFMC) at a meeting in early November. The proposed 2024 halibut fishing seasons on the table are: Marine Area 1 (Ilwaco): • Option 1 – Open May 2-21 (fishing allowed Thursdays, Sundays, and Tuesdays only), and open May 23 and May 26 only. Then open from May 30 through June 30 (fishing allowed Thursdays, Sundays, and Tuesdays only). If additional quota remains, then fishery would reopen daily in August and September. The Marine Area 1 nearshore fishery will be open Monday through Wednesday following the opening of the all-depth fishery. It will remain open until the nearshore allocation is taken or September 30, whichever is earlier. On days when the all-depth halibut fishery is closed, taking, retaining, possessing, or landing halibut on groundfish trips is only allowed in the nearshore area. Marine Area 2 (Westport-Ocean Shores): • Option 1 – Open May 2-30 (fishing allowed Thursdays, Sundays, and Tuesdays only) and open May 23 only. If sufficient quota remains, then fishery would reopen June 13, 16, 18, 20, 23, 25, 27, and 30. If additional quota remains, then fishery would reopen daily in August and September. 66

Marine Areas 3 and 4 (La Push and Neah Bay): • Option 1 – Open May 2 through May 18 (fishing allowed Thursdays through Saturdays only), and open May 24 and May 26. Then open from May 30 through June 30 (fishing allowed Thursdays and Sundays only). If additional quota remains after June 30, then fishery would reopen daily in August and September. • Option 2 – Open May 2-20 (fishing allowed Thursdays and Saturdays only), and open May 24 and May 26. Then open from May 30 through June 30 (fishing allowed Thursdays through Sundays only). If additional quota remains after June 30, then fishery would reopen daily in August and September. Marine Areas 5 to 10 (Strait of Juan de Fuca and open areas of Puget Sound): • Option 1 – Open daily April 4 through June 30. If additional quota remains after June 30, then fishery would reopen daily in August and September. • Option 2 – Open April 4 through June 30 with fishing allowed Thursdays to Mondays only. If additional quota remains after June 30, then fishery would reopen daily in August and September. Marine Areas 11, 12, and 13 (south-central and southern Puget Sound and Hood Canal): • Closed year-round for halibut. Other proposed rules: • Marine Areas 5 (Sekiu-Pillar Point): It is permissible for halibut anglers to retain lingcod and Pacific cod caught while fishing for halibut in waters deeper than 120 feet on days that halibut and lingcod fisheries are open. • Marine Areas 6 to 10 (eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca and open areas of Puget Sound): It is unlawful for halibut anglers to retain lingcod and Pacific cod caught while fishing for halibut in waters deeper than 120 feet on days that halibut fishing is open. • Marine Areas 1 to 10: Daily bag limit of one

halibut per angler, with no minimum size limit. Annual limit to be determined. All catches must be recorded on WDFW catch record card. Possession limits remain the same. In recent years, fishery managers and recreational constituents/stakeholders have looked at ways to provide more stability with how halibut seasons are structured. The season length analysis for all marine areas revealed a dramatic improvement beginning in 2022 compared to data from 2018, 2019, and 2021. In September, there was feedback by stakeholders to increase the annual bag limit from four to six halibut, according to WDFW staff, whom agreed to follow up with stakeholders before adopting a change, which can only be made through the state regulatory process only. The proposals for 2024 reflect increasing confidence that building more opportunity into the schedule early in the season is not likely to jeopardize achieving a season that lasts at least through May. WDFW has worked with the National Marine Fisheries Service in recent years to implement the flexible management provisions in the Catch Sharing Plan. The 2023 Washington recreational halibut quota was 281,728 pounds and was part of a 1.52-million-pound quota for Washington, Oregon, and California. The International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC) will meet on January 22-26 in Anchorage, Alaska, where they’ll review the halibut regulations and adopt catch quotas from Alaska south to California. The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) will then make a final approval of Washington’s halibut fishery plans, sometime in March or sooner. Taking the Show on the Road Little Wing’s big adventure: DOUG HANSEN introduces a restored raceboat that logged some serious miles in 2023, including to San Diego for the heralded Hot Rum Series.

Ericka and Ben Towery have owned the Capri 25 Little Wing since 2016. Originally living and sailing on the Great Salt Lake, the boat traveled with them when they moved to Seattle last year. Since showing up on the scene, they have been a regular fixture on the Shilshole Bay racecourse, regularly taking part in the Sloop Tavern Ballard Cup on Monday nights, as well as the full range of weekend regattas. Ben works as a sailmaker at Ballard Sails, and Ericka runs her own children’s clothing company, Melon Baby, so they both know their way around a sewing machine and aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and take on worthwhile projects. Built in 1984 as Hull number 422, Little Wing is far from a spring chicken, but thanks to hard work, you would never know it. The boat went under the knife last winter, and no stone was left unturned, including a keel box rebuild, new structural framing, stiffened compression post, and updates to the standing rigging and deck hardware. She now sits as one of the cleanest Capri 25s in the world and a fantastic example of an older boat getting a new lease on life thanks to much love. While topping the score sheets in the local regattas is undoubtedly a feat, the coolest part about Little Wing is that the boat has more highway miles than most people's cars. This summer alone, the Towerys took the newly rebuilt boat on the “Little Wing World Tour.” 68

The tour started in Seattle, then traveled Idaho for the Spud Cup, next to Montana for the Montana Cup, then Minnesota for Capri 25 Nationals, and, finally, back to Seattle for the fall regattas. As the weather began to get cold, they were far from done, and the boat went on the trailer again and headed south for the San Diego Hot Rum series. Hosted by San Diego Yacht Club, the threerace series has taken on legendary status in the world of “Beer Can Racing.” The series is held on the first Saturday of October, November, and December and regularly attracts hundreds of boats, ranging from classic wooden Six Meters to full carbon fiber 70-foot ocean racers and everything in between you can imagine. Besides the spectacular weather, amazing setting, and ridiculously welcoming host club, the race itself has a special twist: It is a pursuit race. In a pursuit race, the handicaps are calculated before the start, and every boat is given a specific start time. The result is that the slower boats get a head start on the larger, faster ships, and whoever crosses the finish line first is the winner. While not a perfect system, anyone who races handicap-scored racing knows that certain conditions favor certain designs; it is fantastically fun to see how many smaller boats you can pass and how many bigger boats you can hold off. I was lucky enough to be invited to sail the first of the three-race series with Ben and

Ericka, which was undoubtedly a highlight of my year. The racecourse is the same each week: Start just inside the San Diego harbor entrance, sail out into the ocean, turn left and head towards Mexico, around a pair of buoys, and back to the finish. The high headlands around the harbor make for tricky shifts as you come and go from the harbor, and the traffic on the way back in is unreal as the entire fleet converges on the finish line simultaneously. You only get one race per weekend, so you must make it count. Little Wing did an excellent job holding off a ton of huge and very well-sailed boats for nearly the entire race. We won our class of similar ships and ended up 28th overall as the filling wind let the larger boats catch us on the final leg into the finish. The team kept up the pace for the next two races and wrapped things up with a respectable class win and 17th place after three races. After a spectacular summer touring the country with the boat, most people would be happy to bring her home and tuck in for the winter, but Ericka and Ben aren’t most people. The boat is back on the trailer and headed southeast to Arizona to participate in the Lake Pleasant Regatta in February. So far, the plan for next summer is to stay closer to home and only take part in regattas in three different states.

Warm Welcome Come in from the cold and cozy up to a soulful seafood chowder flecked with smoky bacon, bright veggies, and more. Happy New Year! And what a perfect time for a hot bowl of chowder to warm the soul. Chowder, as you may have heard, is to seafood lovers what chili is to meat eaters. We stand by our favorites through thick or thin. This hearty recipe, bound to take the chill off any cold January day, is filled with fresh clams, fish, and scallops; and the dulse (edible seaweed flakes) adds a rich umami taste to the savory broth. When you make a pot of this creamy chowder in your galley or kitchen, you’ll find the texture is not as lumpy as other seafood chowders. This recipe is courtesy of Rich Komen, founder of Cinnabon and Restaurants Unlimited and an owner of Roche Harbor. Incidentally, this is my second cookbook collaboration with Rich; the first being with him and Chef Bill Shaw on Roche: A Culinary Journey through San Juan Island's Illustrious Harbor.

Seafood Chowder with Leek, Carrot & Parsnip Serves 6 to 8 1 cup clam juice 36 medium-size steamer clams (like littlenecks), scrubbed and rinsed 2 tablespoons butter, divided ¼ pound thick-cut bacon, diced 2 tablespoons dulse seaweed flakes 2 leeks, tops removed, halved, and cleaned, then sliced into half-moons (about 3 cups) 2 carrots, peeled and halved, then sliced into half-moons (about 1 cup) 2 parsnips, peeled and halved, then sliced into half-moons (about 3 cups) 2 medium-size Yukon Gold potatoes, cubed (about 3-1/2 cups) 1 cup dry white wine 3 sprigs fresh thyme 2 bay leaves 2 cups heavy cream Fresh ground black pepper, to taste 1 pound firm white fish filets (i.e., cod, seabass), cut into fingers ½ pound sea scallops ¼ cup chopped fresh Italian flat leaf parsley, for garnish

In a large, heavy Dutch oven over medium-high heat, add 4 cups water and the clam juice. When hot and bubbling, add the clams and cook until they open, 10 to 15 minutes. (Any clams that don’t open after 15 to 20 minutes should be discarded.) Strain the clam broth (about 5 or 6 cups) through a sieve lined with cheesecloth or paper towels and set aside. Remove the clams from their shells and set aside. Rinse the pot and return to the stove. Add 1 tablespoon of the butter and reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the diced bacon and cook, stirring occasionally, until the fat has rendered and the bacon has started to brown, about 5 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove the bacon and set aside. Add the dulse flakes and leeks to the fat, and cook; stirring the mix frequently, until soft but not brown, for about 8 minutes. Add the remaining tablespoon of butter, then stir in the carrots, parsnips, potatoes, and wine. Continue cooking until the wine has evaporated and the vegetables have just started to soften, about 7 minutes. Add enough clam broth (about 5 cups) to cover the potatoes. Add the thyme and bay leaves. Partly cover the pot, and simmer gently until the vegetables are tender (with the potatoes taking the longest), 15 to 20 minutes. Meanwhile, chop the clams into bits about the size of the bacon dice. When the vegetables are tender, add the cream and stir in the chopped clams and reserved bacon. Add black pepper to taste. Bring to a simmer (do not boil) and remove and discard the thyme and bay leaves. If serving immediately, add the fish fingers to the chowder and place the scallops on the surface. Allow the seafood to cook in the heat, 5 to 7 minutes. The chowder is best if it can sit overnight in the refrigerator before adding the fish and scallops. When it’s time to serve, reheat the chowder over a low simmer and add the fish and scallops until cooked through. Season to taste with salt and pepper and serve with a garnish of fresh parsley.
