Fishing is a beloved pastime all across the United States and the globe, but as Ellensburg-based fly fishing guide Jeff Brazda so eloquently said within these pages, Washington state offers some of the most distinctive and diverse fishing grounds found anywhere: “You’ve got everything from the rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula to the more arid environment of Eastern Washington; there are glacial rivers, high mountain streams, basins, tributaries, tiny little streams on up to the mighty Columbia River. It’s an outdoorsman’s paradise.”

A paradise it is, and this month, we salute our beloved state with a look inside the varying fly fisheries available to anglers this fall with the “On the Fly” feature on pages 54-63. Three local experts kindly shared their insider tips and secret spots with us, which include everything from blue ribbon rivers and streams to ocean shallows and beaches, all in the pursuit of some fall fish. Boats Afloat to Celebrate Women’s Day, Soldiers for Salmon Charity Events

The crisper air and shorter days may mean the 2023 boating season is beginning to wane, but the party will continue with a nod to 2024 with the upcoming fall Boats Afloat Show on Lake Union. Dealers and brokers from the Northwest and Canada are expected to showcase more than 120 new power and sailing boats, while the show’s organizers will hold new promotions celebrating women in the Northwest boating community and military service from all genders.

During the expo at the Lake Union Piers development that runs from September 14-17, the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association (NYBA) will host several fun and educational family-friendly activities, including live music, cooking demonstrations, food and beverage vendors, equipment presentations, sailboat rides, and boating skills courses.

For the event’s kick-off on Thursday the 14th, Boats Afloat tickets for women attendees will be offered at 50 percent of the adult general admission fee. “Women are often the ‘behind-the-scenes’ driving force in the success of a family’s boating adventure,” explained Karli Houlé, NYBA’s director of operations. “We encourage women to bring a friend, or friends, for this special day.”

Another new promotion will come from Salmon for Soldiers, a Puget Sound-based nonprofit that specializes in helping veterans and active-duty military personnel overcome the hardships of their service and heal themselves through fishing activities.

Salmon for Soldiers’ fishing tours are designed to help reduce stress and foster relaxation, while creating new relationships with others who share their maritime interests. Events arranged by the charity are designed to form bonds among veterans with paralysis, post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injuries, and other debilitating challenges. Seven years after the group was started by two veterans, it now hosts regular events for over 800 veterans. According to Salmon for Soldiers, the group chartered fishing trips for more than 150 veterans in 2019 alone. One of these excursions involved a dream charter to Alaska for 10 veterans, who fished with the Prince of Wales Sportfishing charter organization.

Salmon for Soldiers will provide information and resources each day at Boats Afloat, and all attendees can purchase raffle tickets for a variety of prizes—with all proceeds of the raffle going to the group’s members.

Returning for this show will be free sailboat rides at the North Dock offered by the Seattle Sailing Club. To help encourage interest in boating, the club also holds pre-booked Intro to Sailing courses. Those who have already signed up for the beginner’s courses will also get free entry tickets.

Nordhavn’s New 112 Hopes to Fill Expedition Yacht Gap

For Northwest boaters seeking to purchase a large, expedition-style yacht but are leery of needing to hire a full crew to manage it, Nordhavn is looking to offer a middle ground, with a new vessel that balances luxurious, almost super-yacht accommodations with the versatility and easier handling of a smaller boat.

Known for designing boats that focus more on performance than poshness, the California-based builder released detailed digital renderings in July for the Nordhavn 112, featuring a host of surprisingly ample amenities. In its prototype configuration, the N112 will have four cabins with queensized berths, a large owner’s suite, space for a crew of up to six people, and 10 heads throughout. Other top-end frills include a gym, ample outdoor lounging areas, folding bulwark balconies, a hydraulic beach-style swim step, and a hot tub in the foredeck or flybridge.

While full performance and design specs have not yet been released by Nordhavn, the beam of the new design is expected to be wide enough to include space for a 26’ tender and various other RIBs and personal watercraft. The builder added that the N112 will also carry a substantial fuel tank suitable for transoceanic voyages.

The N112 is meant to fill a gap between Nordhavn’s 96’ and 120’ models. The key to the mid-range size, Nordhavn said, is to keep the weight just under the 400-gross-ton limit that tends to require a full crew to manage a bigger yacht’s

operations. In a statement following the announcement, Jeff Leishman, Nordhavn’s chief designer, said the niche of the N112 will be “anyone who has owned a large yacht with lots of crew and is looking to simplify things, or anyone looking to upsize from something smaller and wants a true expedition yacht.”

Once completed, the yacht will feature a full-displacement steel hull, which is expected to make customization easier, reduce the construction time and costs, and accelerate delivery schedules, compared to boats using fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP). The superstructure, however, will likely be built with lightweight aluminum or FRP to provide better fuel economy.

“Building the superstructure of FRP is a bit easier since so much of the areas are simple, flat, plain surfaces, so the amount of fairing is less and it goes very quickly," Leishman added.

A release date for the first built-to-order N112 has not yet been determined. Nordhavn said it is currently searching for a facility where the yacht will be produced, most likely in a European shipyard specializing in steel hulls. Q4 Delivery Expected for Pure Watercraft’s Pontoon Debut

This December, don’t be surprised if Northwest boaters find sleek new pontoon boats under their Christmas trees—they’re so quiet they can sneak up on you.

The long-awaited, all-electric Pure Pontoon boat, made by the Seattle e-boat manufacturer Pure Watercraft, has unveiled its fully equipped commercial prototype and has begun taking pre-orders for both its single-engine and twin-outboard formats. Deliveries of these orders is expected in the fourth fiscal quarter of this year, at the earliest.

While the boat’s instant torque and quietness, with the use of its nearly silent 25kW electric outboards, is no surprise to anyone who’s navigated with an electric boat, the performance exceeded even Pure Watercraft’s expectations. The top speed of the prototype with the twin power-tilt Pure Outboards and Bluetooth-enabled throttle stands at 27 mph, increasing from estimates of 23 mph earlier this year. The e-boat still hits 24 mph when fully loaded with its maximum capacity of nine passengers, the company said.

Using an automotive 66 kWh battery pack developed in collaboration with General Motors, the Pure Pontoon can be operated for a 40-mile, 3.5-hour outing on a single charge, running at a normal mix of boating speeds. Once back at the dock, it can be recharged in a few hours

with a Level I charger that connects to 110V and 220V outlets.

This boat is undeniably made to be a socializing platform, but it’s hardly the slow, stodgy rectangle that so many older aluminum pontoon boats resemble. The latest upgrade, measuring 25’ 9” long, has a more swept-back, sportier styling, a sound system, and an electrically retractable Bimini top. The open-air interior also features an L-shaped settee to starboard around a fixed table aft of the helm. Opposite the helm, to port, is another cushioned bench seat, along with two forward-facing lounge seats at the bow.

Notably different from most conventional pontoon catamarans is Pure Pontoon’s stability and smoothness in choppy water, even at top speed through turns. Much of this comes from its fixed hydrofoil between the two hulls, which lifts the pontoons higher in the water at speed, reducing drag and enabling the hull to cut cleanly through the waves. Use of the foil assist also reduces power usage in the motors by up to 21 percent.

While much attention has been paid to Seattle’s massive Waterfront Park construction project to redevelop the old Alaska Way Viaduct property, some people may not have noticed a small beachfront addition in the Pioneer Square area that opened on July 1. Called Pioneer Square Habitat Beach, the 200-foot-long strip of urban intertidal shoreline has been under construction since 2018 and is wedged between the Coleman Dock ferry terminal on Pier 48 and the historic Washington Street Boat Landing pergola. Habitat Beach was actually completed in 2020 but remained closed to the public during the pandemic to give the newly planted flora time to establish a foothold. By adding this beach property to the much larger waterfront development, the project partially fulfilled its pledge to support and restore endangered marine habitats around the city’s renovated seawall. During the industrial development of the area more than a century ago, most of the natural coastal elements were eliminated, including sloping beaches, shoals where marine life can grow, and beach vegetation.

The new park serves to restore part of the coastline to its original habitat, which is more conducive to juvenile salmon migration. Made with more than 45,000 tons of sand, gravel, soil, and shells, the new beach has been stocked with 1,400 native plantings, such as evergreen saplings, saltwater-tolerant shrubs, Oregon grape bushes, Nootka roses, Douglas asters, gumweed, dune grass, and sea plantains.

Like most parts to the Pioneer Square district, Habitat Park also hearkens back to the time of the founding of Seattle, when the region’s indigenous cultures resided there. The spot near the new park was once a small island that the Duwamish people would travel to in canoes to trade goods with the city’s white settlers. By the 1890s, the Duwamish were forced off the island, which was renamed Ballast Island and used for sailing ships to dump their ballast rocks before sailing on to other ports. Today, the now-erased island is being honored on the new beach with an installation of indigenous artwork in the form of four stone columns measuring 3’ to 5’ high, with interpretive signs about the Duwamish culture. As the artwork is being installed, Habitat Beach will be temporarily closed again this fall before re-opening by spring 2024. The adjacent Washington Street Boat Landing pergola will be fully restored that same year, a still-to-be-named concessionaire is also expected to open there in the spring.

Meanwhile, construction continues to surge forward on the sprawling, $781 million, 20-acre Waterfront Park project to form an unbroken connection between Pioneer Square and Pier 62 Belltown to the north. The massive undertaking, featuring walking paths, greenery, bike lanes, and festival spaces, has been ongoing since 2010 and is set to be completed in several phases through 2024 and 2025. 2024 Beneteau Gran Turismo 45

She could be all yours: The sleek, sophisticated, sumptuously appointed GT 45 is now docked at Denison Yachting in Seattle.

Just hitting the Northwest shores near the end of the summer season is the new Beneteau Gran Turismo 45, which tied up at Denison Yachting over Seafair weekend. This sleek, streamlined beauty features huge, openable windows, an airy indoor/outdoor cockpit area, and one of the coolest little staircases you’ll see on a 48-footer.

Stepping aboard, visitors quickly note the many opportunities there are for sunbathing, including the wide, hydraulic swim step, a sunpad located over the starboard tender garage, and a huge sunpad platform at the foredeck that can accommodate three people, and includes a built-in, retractable shade canopy. The tender garage can secure a small 9’ RIB dinghy and includes an option for a flip-open Kenyon electric BBQ grill on the aft edge.

Farther forward, the cockpit features a roomy U-shaped settee to starboard that is large enough for eight people. The settee and foldable wooden table sit opposite a mini-galley, with an ice maker and a mini-fridge. The helm, immediately forward, includes a captain’s chair, a co-pilot bench, both with bolsters, and a wide electric sunroof in the hardtop directly overhead. Navigational gear includes a 4” Volvo engine display and a suite of Garmin electronics, such as a 12” multifunction 8416 screen, broadband 4G radar, a depth sounder, 315i VHF, an 800 AIS transceiver, and autopilot.

The port side of the cockpit provides ample space to move forward to the stairway to the lower deck. The elegant turn of the stairs to starboard is less than 90 degrees, but the curved tinted-glass ceiling above follows the stairway contour, providing a sweeping arc of natural light to the lower deck. At the bottom of the stairs is the compact main galley to port, featuring a double stainless steel sink, Corian countertops, a ceramic hob cooktop, a microwave oven, a 7.7-cubic-foot refrigerator/ freezer, and openable portholes.

In the standard two-cabin layout for the Beneteau GT 45, a salon is located opposite the galley, with space for a U-shaped, four-person sofa, a dining table, and options for a 24” TV and a Fusion sound system. However, in the three-cabin configuration, the salon space can be made into an

extra berth with two bunkbeds. In either layout, the aft owner’s cabin features a double-sized berth, a 22” TV, a Fusion sound system, two panoramic windows, Venetian blinds, and an en suite head and separate shower stall. The VIP cabin at the bow includes either a double or two single berths, similar TV/audio hookups, and access to the boat’s day head and shower. Several styles of custom paneling, upholstery, and carpeting are available from Beneteau, but the standard package features ultra-modern, three-gloss Alpi grey walnut woodwork and brown oak laminated floors.

The GT 45 is powered by twin joystickcontrolled Volvo 600 diesel engines, with either IPS pods or Z-drive propulsion options, producing a combined total of 880 hp. 1984 63' Norlund Pilothouse

Meet Margene, a well-appointed, beautifully updated motor yacht available from Worth Avenue Yachts that you can hop aboard at this month’s Boats Afloat show.

This 63’ Nordlund Pilothouse may be approaching 40 years of age, but several extensive rounds of major overhauls at the Nordlund Shipyard, plus a 2021-2022 refit with new equipment and interiors, make the graceful Margene look like it just launched yesterday.

The wide beam provides plenty of room for lounging in the deep-well cockpit or strolling along the teak sidedecks, which were refinished in 2016. The swim step is large enough to park a 15’ Novurania RIB, with a 60hp Yamaha outboard, plus an Olson davit.

Stepping into the salon, visitors are greeted by the luxury stylings of both a 2009 refit and a 2021-2023 update from local interior designers John Pokela and Mary Flores, including padded carpeting.

A custom-designed, L-shaped sofa dominates the starboard side, opposite a hi/lo TV and entertainment center and two club chairs. A set of three barstools directs your attention forward to a granite bar connecting the salon and galley.

Up two steps from the salon, a wet bar to port features a U-Line icemaker and a custom circular sink. Immediately to starboard is the updated galley with an open view of the salon area. Some of the all-new galley amenities include a stainless steel sink, a Bosch induction cooktop, a GE convection microwave, a full size Fischer Paykel refrigerator and freezer, a Frigidaire dishwasher, and a GE trash compactor.

Two more steps up and forward locates the pilothouse, where the main dining area is located aft of the helm, with a high-gloss dining table and a plush C-shaped settee. The redesigned main helm boasts a new suite of Garmin and Furuno displays and navigation equipment, along with a satellite compass, Simrad AP70 and AP80 control heads, A2004 autopilot, and controls for the Wesmar 10” bow thruster and the Side-Power stern thruster. Twin leather helm seats from Stidd provide excellent visibility and access to the wooden ship’s wheel.

An aft staircase leads to Margene’ s flybridge, with its own similar upper-helm configuration. A new Sunbrella canvas Bimini provides shade and partial cover from the elements. With the tender secured to the swim step below, the expansive aft flybridge deck has loads of room for socializing on a comfy indoor/outdoor sofa and side chairs.

Belowdecks, three staterooms can accommodate up to six people. The owner’s stateroom at the bow features a walkaround queen-size berth and six opening hatches for ventilation. The en suite head has been heavily refitted to include a large custom tile shower and glass doors, a Toto bidet, and new fixtures. The midship VIP stateroom also has walkaround queen berth and an en suite head with a recently enlarged walk-in shower. The third guest cabin has over/under bunk berths and access to the yacht’s day head, with a separate shower stall.

Aft of the workshop is the engine room, where Margene’ s twin Detroit Diesel 8V92TA engines, which had a major overhaul in 1996, reside. Originally rated at 730hp each, the engines were detuned to 650hp for extended life and additional power, allowing the boat to cruise at 12 knots and go full throttle to 22 knots at the top end.

REBEL WITH A CAUSE

Seattle’s LMM Boats looks to shake up the U.S. workboat industry—and perhaps even safeguard the planet—with a new line of slick, gritty vessels forged with recyclable HDPE plastic.

renegade; rebel. Any of these adjectives could be used to describe the non-conformist attitude of LMM Boats, a new Seattle company challenging industry conventions with their new line of workboats made with HDPE plastic hulls. But, lofty as their ambitions might be, the origin story for this local boat builder is as real, raw, and relatable as can be.

The LMM stands for Legacy Master Marine, which might ring bells among boaters as the name of a south Seattle service and repair shop located on the Duwamish River, and yes, it’s one and the same. LMM Boats is the newest brainchild of Eric Hendrickson, the affable owner of Legacy Master Marine, who has enjoyed a long career in the maritime industry with stints as a licensed USCG unlimited chief engineer, a traveling consultant for the drilling industry, and a shipyard supervisor in the building and outfitting of offshore supply boats. This was all on his native East Coast, before a job opportunity brought him out to Seattle in 2019. Here, he dabbled in more government work and contracts under his own company, EDC Engineering; gaining experience in fabrication, mechanics, and welding before purchasing the LMM boatshop from its original owners in 2021.

And here’s where the plot picks up: As Hendrickson was getting his feet wet as a boatshop owner, he simultaneously was looking to purchase a boat of his own, something tough and dependable, yet still speedy and fun. Given his background, he started looking for an aluminum workboat hull, but an internet bunny trail led him to a family-run company named Tideman Boats, out of Amsterdam, Holland, that was making hulls not out of fiberglass or metal, but plastic.

Intrigued, he reached out to them to ask questions about the fabrication and the answers were riveting: Tideman’s hulls were crafted out of a 100% high density polyethylene plastic that was fully recyclable, but also incredibly durable in the conditions of the sea. Not only that, because plastic is marine growth-resistant, they didn’t require the maintenance usually associated with vessels kept in saltwater—no need for bottom paint, no scraping, fewer haulouts.

“It was a bit of a light bulb moment for me,” Hendrickson says. “The fact that these hulls were super strong, yet environmentally friendly, and required almost no maintenance? It sounded like an unbeatable trifecta.”

As the two entities continued to chat, Tideman soon began making queries of their own as they learned about Hendrickson’s vast experience in the workboat industry and as a longtime diesel mechanic. As HDPE models didn’t have much of a presence stateside, Tideman proposed that together they bring something new to the U.S. market: A line of workboats fabricated by LMM in Seattle utilizing Oxe diesel motors and Tideman HDPE hull materials.

“As aluminum has really been ingrained as the industry standard here in the U.S., from government to commercial, I knew introducing HDPE as a viable alternative would be a challenge, but one I was totally up for,” Hendrickson says.

It was an enthusiastic “yes” from Hendrickson, and no holds barred from there.

The first challenge is consumer awareness, or perhaps lack thereof. “When you first say ‘plastic,’ most people think it’s a mold, and thus pretty rigid, design wise,” he says. “But it’s not, the material actually comes in big sheets that we then fabricate, so we can actually be pretty flexible. If someone wants the vessel to be a little bit wider, or asks for a specific feature, it can be done. It’s a great base platform to work with.”

After spending about a year learning the ins and outs of the fabrication—Hendrickson describes the plastic as extremely fun to work with, more pliable and forgiving than aluminum, and thus easier to create an essentially seamless weld—LMM debuted its prototype model in February 2023 at the Vancouver Boat Show, following that appearance with one at the Anacortes Boat Show in May, and another showing at a multi-agency craft conference in June in Virginia.

There, he performed a demo that speaks to the craft’s durability, running the LMM prototype aground on a rocky beach with several government officials onboard. “We just hit the throttle and went for it, right up on the rocks near Norfolk Naval Hospital with them aboard. There wasn’t a scratch on it. They were totally shocked.”

Demo rides like this have proved to be instrumental in helping Hendrickson to evangelize the benefits of the HDPE, as many riders also comment on the swift and stealthy ride as the boat moves through water.

“It’s definitely a different feel than aluminum, there’s none of that metal twang and bang, it’s a much quieter ride,” he states.

A contribution to that smoothness, as well as to the stability, is that the hull is filled with polyethylene balls, instead of foam, to help the overall buoyancy. The HDPE material itself is durable, fabricated in a thicker construction than standard 1/4-inch aluminum, that is still comparatively lightweight. Hendrickson himself owns a 24-footer with a HDPE hull outfitted with a center console and an OXE 200HP diesel outboard engine that weighs in at 6,400 pounds.

While the primary target audience is more commercial—in addition to patrol and survey work, Hendrickson points towards fuel spill response where the hull would excel since it doesn’t absorb chemicals or moisture—he also firmly believes there is potential within the recreational sector, especially here in the Northwest. “People here love to run up to the islands and explore, and you can beach

this boat pretty much anywhere you want, and you are good to go.”

As of press time, LMM Boats is accepting orders for vessels in three hull sizes, with a choice for either a center console or cabin option, that Hendrickson and his team can currently deliver in an 8-to-10week time frame (for a center console boat).

The customer is brought in early in the process to ensure that each hull is fit for its intended purpose, with the option to customize the layout, fuel capacity, electronics and lighting, and engine options and packages.

For now, the robust, modular vessels all arrive in a striking UV-resistant black hull, which happens to be the easiest, most efficient hue to produce the HDPE, but it sure seems like a fitting coincidence that black is the chosen color of rebels everywhere.

This apt summation of our state’s earthly attributes comes from Jeff Brazda, the owner of an Ellenburg-based fly fishing guide outfit that spends most of the calendar year spiriting visitors to local rivers in search of their next catch. Yes, Washington can, and does, offer up the quintessential image many conjure when the words “fly fishing” are uttered—wading out into a pristine stream to cast a line time and again before pulling a wiggling, waggling rainbow trout out of the flowing waters. But, the state’s aforementioned geographical diversity also allows anglers to fly fish the salt, with myriad options for nabbing cutthroat from both the sea and beaches.

September marks a prime time for fishing, as aficionados can capitalize on both the last fringes of summer salmon season, as well as look for freshwater favorites like trout. Here, three local fly fishing experts chime in on their favorite tactics, proven methods, and the go-to fishing holes they’ll frequent this fall season, as well as also offer advice for

aspiring anglers and experts alike. Whether you decide to aim upriver, stick to the shallows, or mosey down to the beach, all three agree on one thing: it’s definitely time to let it fly.

HEADING UPRIVER

For Jeff Brazda of Brazda’s Fly Fishing, the entire pursuit is all about family. With deep roots in the Methow Valley, he got his start tying flies alongside his grandfather beginning at age seven and fished the Methow extensively during his formative years. Now, for the past 17 years, he has made his living by spiriting other families on both single- and multi-day guided fly fishing trips for both steelhead and trout, primarily up the Methow, Klickitat, and Yakima Rivers, but also on the Olympic Peninsula, as well. “It’s not always about catching the most fish or the biggest fish,” he explains. “The best part is spending time with family and friends; getting out into nature together; having a fun guide lead the way. We laugh a lot out there.”

“One of the most appealing parts of fly fishing in Washington state is the sheer range; we are essentially blessed with five climates that provide completely different fisheries and experiences. You’ve got everything from the rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula to the drier, more arid environment of the Klickitat River Valley or the Yakima River in Eastern Washington; there are glacial rivers, high mountain streams, basins, tributaries, tiny little streams on up to the mighty Columbia River. It’s an outdoorsman’s paradise.”

When it comes to fall, Brazda is looking to the Yakima River to provide a healthy amount of trout for the taking, beginning now and on into November. (This spot is also where anglers will find that postcard-perfect image of fly fishing from the rock-cobbled river banks; the Yakima is, in fact, considered the state’s only “Blue Ribbon” trout fishery.) Come winter, Brazda will, as always, head west to the glistening and gorgeous rivers found on the Peninsula, where he owns and operates an overnight fishing lodge, the Wild Duc, located just outside Forks on the Sol Duc River.

“The overnight stays really give you an opportunity to immerse yourself in fishing culture, really learn about the species you are after, and bond with the guides and the rest of the group. It’s a great deep dive into fly fishing at its purest.” One tip he always shares on those trips: Northwest trout love stoneflies, which are readily found sitting on the surface of the water. He often ties on a simple Chernobyl Ant fly that mimics that humble bug.

While the guided sojourns by Brazda’s Fly Fishing are ideal for novices or those looking to bulk up their knowledge—the team provides all the necessary gear, and the expertise in identifying the spots fish like to frequent, like under cool shady autumn leaves, for example— Brazda stresses that aspiring anglers shouldn’t be intimidated by the sport. “Anyone can learn to cast, go to YouTube and watch a few videos and you’ll get the hang of it with just a little practice. And be sure to frequent

your local fly shops or call the local guides, they’ll know the area the best.”

PLAYING IN THE SHALLOW END

Moving from the rivers out west to the sea, anglers can sleuth out perhaps a more surprising spot for cutthroat trout: the saltwater shallows. These anadromous trout are born in our rivers, yes, but then migrate to saltwater areas before returning to spawn in their natal stream, and as such spend a chunk of the year in ocean and saltwater estuaries.

And Sound Fly Fishing owner and guide Ben Zander—who was first introduced to the idea of fly fishing coastal cutthroat off Camano Island almost 20 years ago by a friend—seems to have figured out the combination to lure these cutthroats in: by ever so slowly trolling sand bars by boat. “I think every guide has their own philosophy on how they run the day or game plan, but I really like to focus on shallow water,” he explains. “Sight fishing for these critters is not really an option but when fishing eelgrass beds, you can watch the fish move over sand to another bed. Then we make the shot.”

Though he runs a 2,600-pound Boston Montauk boat, Zander often utilizes a push pole to gently glide his vessel through the shallows, an idea he got from his experience hunting tarpon and bonefish. “A lot of those guides use a push pole with a smaller skiff for shallow water pursuits. Mine is not a light boat nor is a poling

platform really an option. However, I decided to try it, and holy cow, it's hard work but deadly effective. I love the teamwork between the angler and guide. It makes the day so much fun.”

In addition to his stealth-like approach, Zander often uses a sinking fly to target the trout. “People often think of fly fishing as a dry fly (a surface floating fly). This is a lot of fun but not a productive method when imitating a small fry or baitfish pattern in a saltwater location with waves affecting the sink rate,” he explains. “So, I use intermediate sinking fly lines to get flies in 2-4 feet of water.” He jokes that though he probably has thousands of flies on board for a guided trip, this technique means he really only uses three: a Baitfish Minnow, and a Skinny Herring and Skinny Smolt of his own design, all of which are readily available at Pacific Fly Fishers in Mill Creek, Washington, where Zander can often be found helping anglers in between trips.

Though Zander is explicit when it comes to his cutthroat tactics, he is much more vague on his go-to spots for the fall, in classic fisherperson fashion: “I focus on the waters surrounding Bainbridge and Vashon Islands. That’s all I can say!”

RUNNING ON THE BEACH

If you’ve ever happened to spot a solitary figure fly fishing from a Washington State Park beach, chances are you have happened upon Leland Miyawaki in his element.

Miyawaki is a well-known figure in the Washington fly fishing world, having managed the Bellevue Orvis store for over 15 years before his retirement two years ago. After spending decades in and around the sport, Miyawaki somewhat boldly proclaims that he no longer fishes the rivers at all, forgoing them instead for the state’s beaches. Here he nabs sea-run cutthroat as they come in with the tide to feed.

“It’s a very unique fishery and a bit of a solitary endeavor,” he says with a laugh. “I’m almost 80 years old and I’ll be the only fly fisher out there. I’ll just sidle up next to all these guys waiting to catch salmon and start throwing my floating fly…those other guys always go nuts when I start pulling cutthroat out of the surf.”

This particular technique requires timing, patience—

and a willingness to walk the beach, as the cutthroat usually found in the 30- to 40-foot range of the water’s edge are coming in hungry.

“Check the tide charts: you want to fish on a tide that’s going in or out, preferably the biggest outgoing one of the day, usually in the morning,” Miyawaki recommends, also noting that cutthroat can be in one location today and an entirely different one tomorrow. “The fish are in there to eat, not to rest. They are chasing their food with the tide, you should move with it too, so you are keeping with them. Sea-runs are all about walking and stalking.” For bait, he uses a floating fly of his own design called the Miyawaki Beach Popper. Available at area fly fish shops, the popper mimics a crippled baitfish leaving a v-wake as Miyawaki stripes it along the surface; he usually throws his line about 50 feet out at a 45-degree angle. “They’ll see it as they come up to feed, and chase it as I wick it.”

Your best bet for fall is to set a heading south, as Miyawaki states that a large portion of the sea-run cutthroat population emerges in the Tacoma, Olympia, and Shelton areas from the river systems nearby. He points to such southend parks Joemma Beach and Penrose Point, both in Lakebay, as two of his favorite spots. February and March tend to be the scantest as most cutthroat are then up in the natal rivers, but, with proper planning, he says the beaches provide an almost year-round fishery.

It’s time to go local for coho: MARK YUASA previews the best prospects for hooking some salmon this season.

As we move into September the color palette of salmon fades from pink to silver. Millions of pink salmon generated plenty of smiles on anglers’ faces this summer, and now coho salmon—commonly referred to as silvers for their shiny silvery-colored body—are starting to arrive in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound.

While not large, silvers usually average 4 to 15 pounds, with some hitting the 20-plus pound mark, and they’re highly regarded for leaping and zipping across the water, making them an exciting fish to catch. Puget Sound coho returns began making a comeback a few years ago after a downtrend due to drought issues and low survival rates in 2015 and 2016. The combined 2023 Puget Sound hatchery and wild coho forecast is 760,029, up from 666,317 in 2022; 614,948 in 2021; and 504,604 in 2020.

A good sign earlier this summer was a decent number of resident coho caught in central Puget Sound (Marine Area 10) from early June into early August. Some of these coho have grown since then and will link with their migratory relatives during the fall marine fisheries. Another key indicator of when they’ll arrive in Puget Sound is to keep tabs on catch rates in the Strait of Juan de Fuca at Sekiu (Marine Area 5) to Port Angeles (Marine Area 6). Both locations are open daily through September 30 for hatchery-marked coho with a two-fish daily limit, and all coho are allowed to be retained from October 1-15. There is also a Dungeness Bay hatchery-marked coho fishery from October 1-31. The best coho action normally occurs in the shipping lanes of the Strait of Juan de Fuca; look for schools of coho jumping on the surface.

Make plans to head to the San Juan Islands (Marine Area 7) when it opens September 1-30 with a two salmon daily limit and one coho may be retained (release all Chinook and chum). The northeastern region of Whidbey Island (Marine Area 8-1) is open through September 30 for coho with a two salmon daily limit (release all Chinook and chum) from the West Point to Reservation Head eastward through Deception Pass, including all waters of Swinomish Slough and Skagit Bay, and the portion of Saratoga Passage north and west of a line from East Point light to the light on Camano Island. In 2022, anglers were limited to fishing just the bottom half along the southeastern side of Whidbey Island (Marine Area 8-2) but this season the entire area is open through September 24 with a two salmon daily limit and only one coho may be retained (release all Chinook and chum). Marine Area 8-2 is a popular location for coho and should provide very good action.

Northern Puget Sound (Marine Area 9) is open for hatchery-marked coho only now through September 17 and then switches to all coho may be retained from September 18-30. Central Puget Sound (Marine Area 10) is open for all coho now through October 31 with a two salmon daily limit

(release Chinook and chum September 1-30 and release Chinook October 1-31). Target coho from Port Townsend to Marrowstone Island; Bush Point and Lagoon Point off the west side of Whidbey Island; Possession Bar; Point No Point; Pilot Point; Browns Bay; Edmonds Marina south to Richmond Beach; Kingston to Jefferson Head; Meadow Point to West Point near Shilshole Bay; and Alki Point in West Seattle south to northern tip of Vashon Island.

South central Puget Sound (Area 11) in the Tacoma-Vashon Island region will reopen September 1 for pink and coho only (daily limit of two). Starting October 1, the fishery will transition to coho and chum only. Southern Puget Sound (Area 13) is open for hatchery-marked coho and look for some good catches from the Narrows Bridge south to Anderson Island, and around the Squaxin Island net pens where the forecast is 45,417 coho (down slightly from 51,433 in 2022).

Along the coast, trek to Grays Harbor (Marine Area 2-2) for a salmon fishery east of the Buoy 13 line which is broken into two seasons. The “Humptulips North Bay”—north of a line running from the south end of the eastern jetty at the Ocean Shores Marina east to the Brackenridge Bluff Tripod—is open daily through September 15 with a one salmon daily limit and release wild Chinook and wild coho. The “East Grays Harbor Fishery” is open September 16 through November 30 with a two salmon daily limit and release all Chinook. WDFW is forecasting a relatively decent Grays Harbor basin coho return of 214,271 in 2023 up from 198,719 in 2022 and 76,518 in 2021. This forecast is based on ocean abundance of three-year-old adult fish prior to the start of any fisheries.

Another fun coho-only fishery open daily through January 31 is the Westport Boat Basin. The best action occurs from September through October as coho raised in the marina’s hatchery net pens begin to return. The daily limit is six salmon, and no more than four may be adult fish. Release Chinook, no night fishing, and an anti-snagging rule is in effect. Only single barbless hooks may be used.

South of Grays Harbor is the Willapa Bay (Marine Area 2-1) salmon fishery. The Chinook forecast is 30,320 (33,142 in 2022) and the coho forecast is 153,617 (110,483 in 2022). Fishing can be good at times, and it is open daily through January 31 (although fishing wanes well before then and peaks in early- to mid-September). Most of the action in Willapa Bay happens between Channel Markers 13 and 19 on an incoming tide. The daily limit is six salmon and up to two adult salmon may be retained (release wild Chinook).

Duck, Duck, Let Loose

DOUG HANSEN reflects on a summer tradition like none other; the Tuesday evening Duck Dodge races on Lake Union.

Tuesdays in the summer are for dodging ducks, and the place to do it is Lake Union. Anyone who has looked out at the lake on a summer Tuesday night can't miss the mass of sailboats tumbling across the water. The race has been going in one form or another since 1974 and is on the bucket list of any Pacific Northwest sailor or non-sailor. The rules are simple: It’s a lap of Lake Union and ducks have the right of way.

To say that Duck Dodge is a casual race is a bit of an understatement; all are welcome, and outright competitiveness is blatantly looked down on when it gets in the way of having fun. Regarding the boats taking part, any vessel is welcomed as long as it floats and has some form of a sail. Everything from top-notch racing boats to small, home-built, single-person dinghies are regular sights on the racecourse. The participants are just as wide-ranging, mixing lifelong sailors and racers with people who are brand new to boats, and everything in between. Keeping with the lightheartedness, every week has a theme, posted online at the beginning of the summer; the list includes fan favorites like Toga Night, Pajama Party, and of course, the legendary Tropical Night, complete with a barge as one of the rounding marks where volunteers hand out beers as racers pass by.

While it seems chaotic to a newcomer, there is a method to the madness as the eclectic mass of boats is split into five starting groups that separate the fleet based on the speed of the boats and the crews. Starting positions are given out when racers sail past and check in with the volunteer race committee that’s anchored in the center of the lake. The assignment is predominantly a self-selected program, but the catch is that if your boat wins too many races in a row, you get bumped up to the next fleet and fight it out with the faster boats. Things start promptly at 7 p.m., with the first start of fast boats usually sent on two laps of the posted racecourse and the rest of the fleets on a single lap.

The winners of each fleet get a golden duck sticker to proudly display on the mast of their boat. Many veteran Duck Dodge skippers have dozens of little ducks covering every inch of their mast. (Some even need to hoist a crewmember up with a halyard to find an open spot to place a new sticker.)

Of course, we can’t forget what some say is the main attraction of Duck Dodge: the raft-up. As the racers finish and the sails come down, the fleet begins to gather around the committee boat for what is, without a doubt, the best weeknight party in the city. Boats stack on one another, spreading out across the lake in a flotilla of debauchery as grills fire up, music cranks up, and the sunset is in full swing.

Throughout the party, there is a constant stream of people from boat to boat. The tradition with a Duck Dodge virgin is to visit every boat on the raft-up, kissing the master or the mast, a lighthearted tradition that makes for some tremendously funny moments. Things end as the raft breaks up at 10 p.m. with no questions or exceptions; there is a warning ten minutes before to give everyone time to get back to the boat they came on, and once it starts to break up, there is no stopping it. It is a sailboat event like no other, and everyone who has taken part has been left with an abundance of fantastic stories to tell and the occasional one they cannot.

My favorite Duck Dodge story involves meeting a girl sailing on her dad’s boat at the raft-up. A little over a decade later, this summer, we got to take our 10-day-old daughter out for a sail and won her first gold duck on grandpa’s boat. (We opted to skip the raft-up on account of bedtime.)

For those looking to get in on the fun, the Duck Dodge Facebook group is the best place to learn more. There, you can find people posting about the race, boats looking for crew, sailors looking for boats, and anything else you can imagine.

Dotted with fresh raspberries and white chocolate chunks, these gorgeous scones are the perfect match for a morning cuppa joe enjoyed on the aft deck.

If you’re looking for a moist, decadent treat to enjoy on your next cruise, this breakfast or brunch accompaniment loaded with sweet and tart flavors is a must. Fresh local raspberries and creamy white chocolate combine for the perfect pairing. If you’ve never attempted making scones before, you’re in for a pleasant surprise in your galley or home kitchen, as they’re simple to make so long as you have an oven. One pro tip: To help dice the cold butter, use a box grater; the key is getting the cold butter into little pieces, like the chocolate. This recipe is from the forthcoming book Baking for Beginners: Easy Recipes and Techniques for Sweet and Savory At-Home Bakes, which my wife Tiffany and I assembled.

White Chocolate Raspberry Scones

Makes 8 scones

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

¼ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1/3 cup + 1 tablespoon white sugar

½ cup cold unsalted butter, diced

½ cup sour cream

1 egg

1 cup fresh local raspberries

½ cup white chocolate, broken into little pieces

Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. Stir to combine the dry ingredients. Cut in the diced butter and continue until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Set aside. In a small bowl, whisk together the sour cream and egg. Then pour into the dry ingredients and stir until combined. At this stage, the dough should be coarse and dry. Flour your hands and form the dough into a ball, being careful not to overwork the dough. We’re after fluffy, not dense, scones.

Place the dough ball on a flour-dusted countertop and lightly knead to form a circle about 7 inches wide. Then carefully add the fresh raspberries and chocolate evenly over the top of the dough. Gently knead the dough again so the raspberries and chocolate get blended throughout. During this process, the berries will begin to break down a bit, creating colorful swirls. Now, lightly knead again to form a circle about 7 inches wide. Slice the dough into eight wedges.

Transfer the scones to a cookie sheet and bake until light brown, about 16 or 17 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.
