Deck the Hulls “Oh, what fun it is to ride…” I’ve caught myself humming these catchy lyrics from the holiday classic “Jingle Bells” several times as we have been finishing off this festive December issue. But the “rides” running through my head don’t fly in the sky, but rather churn through the seas. Yes, we are wrapping up ‘23 in serious style with a wealth of vessels that are sure to have 2024 looking very merry and bright. First up, we introduce the crowd-pleasing Galeon Yachts brand, newly available in the Northwest via Silver Seas Yachts in Making Waves (page 24), plus, the all-new electric workboat from the minds at X Shore in The Current on page 32. Then it’s onto five new Arrivals beginning on page 40, with all-star models from the likes of Absolute, Princess, and Riviera Yachts now in stock locally. Then, it’s the grand poobah: On pages 54-61, we take a look inside the SP110, the latest and greatest release from Sanlorenzo Yachts that is pushing the envelope when it comes to yacht design, styling, and pure performance. (Spreading even more holiday cheer is the news that this Italian dreamboat and the entire Sanlorenzo range are now available via Worth Avenue Yachts.) Of course, we’ve got lots of merrymaking elsewhere in these pages: Our pal Pearl weighs in on her gift picks on page 36, and this year’s gift guide (pages 47-53) will help you stuff that stocking with a fleet of mini, but mighty, presents. Randy Woods outlines this year’s holiday boat parades in Making Waves (page 23); James O. Fraioli warms things up with a festive cocktail in Sea Fare (pages 70-71); and be sure to flip to our back-page Bon Voyage (page 74) for one last catchy look at my current favorite turn of phrase. TOP LOCAL STORY Rebel with a Cause Our fall feature on LMM Boats, a South Seattle boat brand crafting workboats from recyclable HDPE plastic.

Crab Roll with Smoked Paprika & Fennel Pollen Inspired by the East Coast lobster roll, this recipe features fresh, succulent Northwest crab. You can use either king crab or Dungeness. Serves 4 to 6 4 fresh hot dog buns, split 1⁄4 cup whole unsalted butter 2 cups Crab Salad, recipe follows 4 small lemon wedges 1 teaspoon fennel pollen, optional 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, optional In a sauté or cast-iron pan over medium heat, add the butter. When melted, place the bun, cut-side down into the melted butter and toast. Remove from pan and slice an opening into the top of the bun, creating a pocket for the crab. If you like, drizzle some pan butter into the pocket. Next, add the Crab Salad into the roll, making sure to stuff it well without tearing the bun. It is okay to have some crab protruding from the top. Squeeze the lemon wedge on top, and finish with the fennel pollen and smoked paprika, if desired. Crab Salad Makes 2 cups 1 pound fresh cooked king or Dungeness crab meat, picked and chilled 1 tablespoon red onion, peeled and thinly sliced and chopped 1 tablespoon thinly sliced and chopped celery 1⁄2 tablespoon thinly sliced chives 1⁄4 cup mayonnaise 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice 2 teaspoons kosher salt 1⁄2 teaspoon fresh cracked black pepper 1⁄4 teaspoon fennel pollen 1⁄4 teaspoon smoked paprika In a mixing bowl, add the crab meat. Gently break the meat apart but leave some larger pieces intact. Add the red onion, celery, chives, mayonnaise, lemon juice, salt, pepper, fennel pollen, and smoked paprika. Mix well and reserve in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Seattle Boaters to Light Up the Night for This Year’s Christmas Boat Parades Have you hauled out and untangled your strings of lights yet? It’s time for boaters to make their pride-and-joy vessels shine brightly again for the holiday season. This month, two cherished maritime Christmas traditions return to the Northwest: The Argosy Cruises Christmas Ship Parade of Boats and the Seattle Christmas Boat Parade. The Argosy event kicks off first on Friday, December 8, when the cruise line’s Christmas Ship, The Spirit of Seattle, will shove off from the shore of South Lake Union at 8 p.m., leading a line of glittering, decorated boats in its wake. The 90-minute parade, which has been an annual tradition since 1949, will sail to the northwest through the Fremont Cut before turning at the Ballard Bridge and returning to the starting point. Guests aboard the Christmas Ship will hear carols from an onboard community choir and a reading of “’Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Directly behind the Christmas Ship will be the adults-only 21+ Follow Boat, on which guests can take part in the popular “Ugly Sweater Contest” and will have access to a photo booth. Both vessels will have a full-service bar serving wine, beer, and specialty cocktails. For those on land, a free onshore Viewing Party for the Argosy Parade of Boats will be located at Evanston Plaza, near Evanston Avenue and Northlake Way, providing a panoramic view of the lighted spectacle. Christmas music from radio station Warm 106.9 will be playing at the event, where refreshments will

be available from Finn the Food Truck, Anthony’s Restaurants, Bell’s Cookie Co., and Chayen Coffee Trailer. The following week, another holiday staple, the Seattle Christmas Boat Parade, will kick off on Saturday, December 16, on Lake Union in front of Fremont Tugboat Co. near the Aurora Bridge. In addition to a display of boats decked out in their Christmas finery, the parade will feature the annual Toy Drive, in which participants can donate toys in support of Seattle Children's Hospital. Toy donations can be dropped off at the Ballard West Marine “Fish Shack” as early as December 14. The Christmas Boat Parade will begin at 7 p.m., when the registered boats will sail west to east past Gasworks Park and continue clockwise around Lake Union until reaching the end at Morrison’s Fuel Dock, directly across from the starting line. The lead boat in the parade will be a bright yellow and blue Western Towboat Co. tugboat. Be sure to cheer as loud as you can for the yuletide-loving boaters! For information on reserving a spot for your own vessel or for being a passenger in Argosy’s Christmas Ship Parade, go to: argosycruises. com/christmas-ship-tickets. Those wishing the participate in the Seattle Christmas Boat Parade and Toy Drive, should visit the registration page for more details: seattlechristmasboatparade.com. 23

MAKING WAVE S BY RANDY WOODS / PHOTO COURTESY OF GALEON YACHTS

[ NEW TO THE NORTHWEST ]

Silver Seas Introduces Galeon Yachts to the Pacific Northwest After arriving in the U.S. market with a splash in 2016, Poland-based manufacturer Galeon Yachts has finally made it across to the West Coast with an exclusive representation deal with Silver Seas Yachts. Galeon just released one of its newest models, the 450 Hardtop Coupe (HTC), in October to rave reviews at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The sporty 450 HTC, measuring 45’9” in length, also arrived last month in the Seattle office of Silver Seas on Lake Union. Created in collaboration with Tony Castro Design Studio, the 450 HTC will be available in a two- or three-cabin configuration, along with Galeon’s trademark “Beach Mode” customization option with a summer kitchen, a retractable cockpit shade, a sunroof over the lower helm, and a helm door. One of its most striking features is a drop-down platform on each side of the cockpit to provide more outdoor recreational space beyond the vessel’s 20’8” beam. While the 450 HTC is grabbing the headlines, Billy Gilbert, sales manager for Silver Seas Yachts in Seattle, says the dealer’s emphasis for Pacific Northwest customers will likely be Galeon’s flybridge models, such as the

24

440 FLY that came our earlier this year, as well as the new 560 FLY. Galeon’s flybridge boats, Gilbert said, offer open-air operation from the upper helm station and “more social opportunities in various weather conditions,” which may appeal to boaters used to variable weather conditions in the Northwest. On the 560 FLY, for example, “the aft and side glass open to create a huge open-air social zone at rest,” Gilbert said, “but then can all tuck in and fully enclose to run in complete comfort.” The 440 and 560 boats, he added, “also both feature helm access doors to make maneuvering at the slip or Ballard locks that much easier.” Along with the Galeon, Silver Seas is also the dealer for new luxury yachts offered by the Cruisers, Princess, Tiara, EdgeWater, and Aviara brands, exclusively on the West Coast. In operation for more than 12 years, Silver Seas has more than 500 luxury vessels in stock and operates four offices in California and Seattle. For more details on Silver Seas, and the latest Galeon models to arrive in the Northwest, go to: silverseasyachts.com.

MAKING WAVE S BY RANDY WOODS / ARTIST RENDERING COURTESY OF PORT OF EVERETT

[ DEVELOPING STORY ]

Port of Everett Unveils Glimpses of Planned Mukilteo Makeover While Everett has been hogging a lot of attention lately for its waterfront revitalization projects, its little sister community, Mukilteo, is stepping into the spotlight with the release of preliminary sketches for its own planned makeover in the coming years. In early November, the Port of Everett Commission, which manages the Mukilteo property, invited the public to view new artist’s renderings of their vision for the future, which includes mixed retail and residential development, new restaurant tenants, and a wide public promenade. The 26-acre parcel stretches from Lighthouse Park to Edgewater Beach, just west of the Mukilteo Ferry Terminal, providing sweeping views of Whidbey Island and Possession Sound. While the property is currently being used as a commercial parking lot, the Port envisions a cluster of renovated buildings, tree-lined streets, public gathering spaces, walking trails, and a refurbished shoreline, with steps leading down to provide pedestrian and boating access to the water. 28

The current proposal is only preliminary as waterfront stakeholders are now being contacted for their feedback. The Port formed a partnership with the City of Mukilteo last year and developed a “unified vision” to transform what had been an inaccessible U.S. Air Force fuel-tank farm across the railroad tracks into a vibrant part of the Mukilteo community. When the previous owner, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), decided not to re-develop the property in 2021, the Port stepped in and hired architecture firm NBBJ to come up with new designs. The Port of Everett and the city of Mukilteo are now entering discussions about creating a formal partnership that will move the project forward. Both parties established negotiating committees that started convening earlier this summer. By next year, a timeline may be developed for the first stages of re-development. Stay tuned and for up-to-date info, go to: portofeverett. com/real_estate/mukilteowaterfrontdevelopment.php.

THE CURRENT BY KATE CALAMUSA / PHOTO COURTESY OF X SHORE

Going Pro Charged by its vision for a zero-emissions industry, Swedish electric boat manufacturer X Shore pushes into a new sector with the release of its first e-workboat design, the PRO. First came the sleek Eelex 8000 in 2020, then the equally slick X Shore 1 in 2022. Now, to end cap 2023, Swedish e-boat manufacturer X Shore has released its third vessel, the X Shore PRO. And while at first glance, the PRO maintains the same minimalist, modern aesthetic as the brand’s other vessels, its destiny lies very much elsewhere as X Shore seeks to electrify the working sector with this commercially focused design. “The boating and shipping industries must be decarbonized and central to this mission is bringing to market viable and scalable alternatives to fossil-fuel-powered vessels,” explains X Shore CEO Jenny Keisu. “The PRO is the natural evolution of our offering. Our flagship Eelex showed that electric vessels can be beautiful and high performance, and the X Shore 1 makes electric boating available at a lower price point. Now, the X Shore PRO shows that electric boats can serve industry and deliver change at scale and reach the lives of more people.” Geared toward companies and organizations ranging from commercial shuttle services to diving operators and coast guard patrols, the PRO is built on the same 26-foot-long platform as the

32

flagship Eelex 8000, with the same drivetrain and 170kWh electric motor, and is available in either an open or closed cabin format. The transom design of the exterior, with its low floor, makes it easy to load cargo or passengers onto the deck. The interior space inside the closed cabin option can be flexed as additional seating for commuters or storage space for the likes of tools, while the central console helm station features an intuitive touchscreen so that the captain can easily control the cruising speeds dished out by the vessel’s three battery packs. (The open version of the boat uses dual battery packs with 126 kWh of capacity.) The PRO boasts a top speed of 30-plus knots, a cruising speed of 20 knots, and, depending on sea conditions, X Shore maintains it could go anywhere from 24-48 hours on a single charge. And like X Shore’s other designs, the ride is whisper quiet. Each vessel is currently being built to order, and interested parties can book a 30-minute consultation with X Shore to discuss their specific wants and needs. For more details on the X Shore PRO, go to: xshore.com/us/xshore-pro.

The first thing you’re likely to notice when stepping aboard this new Absolute Navetta 70 is the vast space on three levels, starting with the extra-wide teak swim platform. A few steps up on either side is the spacious cockpit terrace with a mooring station, a small sink to starboard, two sofas facing each other around a table with fold-down wings, and a generous overhang from the flybridge deck above to provide shade. Wide walkways with open gunwales on both sides provide access to the foredeck, where a fixed cushioned bench seat looks forward over a sunpad, so guests can work on their tans. Inside an aft sliding door, the salon décor uses bleached wood with rounded corners, bronze detailing, and furnishings in a white, gray, light green, and black color palette. A freestanding dining table with room for eight people sits to starboard, opposite an open-plan galley to encourage conversation with guests. Forward of the galley is a seating area to port with two upholstered sofas and an easy chair around a circular central table, just aft of the main helm. Large windows flood the entire space with natural light, providing excellent views all around. A covered staircase leads from the cockpit to the teak flybridge deck, which is almost as large as the main deck. This might be considered the focal point of the entire vessel, considering its many luxury amenities, extensive use of glazing, and huge open-air gathering spaces.

The customizable hard top above the flybridge helm provides shade when needed or can be opened with a wide sunroof. Another hardtop option provides a fixed surface on which saltwater-resistant solar panels can be mounted. Wraparound couches nearly surround the single helm chair, located just forward of double wet bar countertops to port and starboard. An optional layout configuration places a fully equipped cocktail bar and galley space to port with extra counter space. Another central free-standing table sits in the middle, with room for eight diners. Aft of the table is another socializing area with designer sofas and two moveable chairs. A stairway starboard off the main helm leads down to the cabins, with accommodations for up to nine people. The forward master suite has a king-size berth and an en suite head, his-andhers sinks, and a generous separate shower stall. The aft master cabin, located amidships, has a queen bed and an en suite berth. Two other cabins are situated in between, with berths that can electrically transformed from single to double beds. Both have access to a shared day head. A crew cabin, with a head and bunk beds, is also accessible from the cockpit at the stern aft of the engine room. Powering it all are twin Volvo Penta D13-IPS engines that produce a combined 1,470hp. 41

ARRIVAL S BY RANDY WOODS / PHOTOS COURTESY OF PRINCESS YACHTS

2024 Princess F45 Available from Silver Seas Yachts, the 2024 Princess F45 packs elegant design, impeccable craftsmanship, and high-performance capabilities all into one desirable package. The 2024 version of the Princess F45 has some of the most sophisticated customization hydraulics seen in yachts of its size, as this F-Class model packs in a wealth of features into its 47foot-long design. For instance, furniture in the teak cockpit, with an aft transom bench and folding table, can be moved with the touch of a button to extend the space for guests. A hydraulic swim step at the stern can also lift tenders out of water and store them on the wide platform. The interiors include wood finishes throughout that are customizable with a choice from four different oak and walnut gloss or satin finishes. Immediately to port is the galley, featuring a three-burner cooktop, a microwave oven, and a refrigerator, plus ample storage below the L-shaped counter. The Princess also provides a branded set of china, cutlery, wine glasses, and tumblers for storage in the galley, with settings for six people. Forward of the galley, a U-shaped settee to port faces a sofa opposite, surrounding a hi-lo dining table. An entertainment center includes a flatscreen TV, a DVD player, and a sound system with speakers extending to the cockpit. Stairs from the cockpit lead to the flybridge above, which includes a wet bar and a hide-away electric grill/barbecue. The flybridge features an L-shaped sofa on the portside of the upper helm, with seats that can be electronically converted into a sunpad. Aft of the two helm chairs is a teak dining table and a forward-facing U-shaped settee. Another large sunpad at the foredeck can also be accessed from the side passages on the main deck. 42

The standard equipment package on the flybridge and main helms includes a suite of Garmin electronics, including a navigation center with a depth-sounder, radar, chart plotter, AIS VHF radio, autopilot, joystick docking controls, and a compass. Belowdecks accommodations include a full-beam, midship owner’s cabin with a king-size berth, a flatscreen TV, an en suite head with separate shower, and a couch to port. A forward en suite cabin features a double island berth, facing aft from the bow, with elegant wraparound hull windows. Powered by upgraded Volvo Penta IPS 650 diesels, producing a combined 960hp to reach a top speed of up to 31 knots, the Princess F45 features a Seakeeper 6 Gyro anti-roll system for the smoothest possible ride at any speed. It also features a dynamic positioning system to hold the boat in place via autopilot and GPS without needing to drop anchor. The newest Princess F45 for 2024 is currently located in Silver Seas’ Sausalito, CA, office, just a quick jaunt down the coast for Northwest buyers. Of special note though: Silver Seas also has a nearly new 2020 version of the Princess F45 currently on offer in its Seattle office. The 2020 vessel is nearly identical but priced a little lower, with Volvo Penta D6 engines (300 hours each) that also produce a combined total of 960hp. Both models are supremely crafted as one of the most fundamental differences at Princess Yachts is the fact that the company designs and builds 80% of its components in-house.

A mixture of turquoise and white resins uncannily mimics the look of sea foam and bubbles breaking against the shore. STATE OF THE ART

Powerful, polished, perceptive, even poetic: The beautifully designed SP110 from Sanlorenzo Yachts is ushering in a new era for the renowned Italian boatbuilder—just as it also makes way for its first appearance in the Northwest via Worth Avenue Yachts Seattle.

By Kate Calamusa Exterior Feature Photography by Guillaume Plisson Interior Feature Photography by Erik Levfander

54

It’s more than apt to classify the new SP110 as a “work of art.” The latest and greatest release from the well-respected Sanlorenzo brand—an Italian shipyard that has designed and built bespoke, made-to-measure motor-and super-yachts since 1958—the SP110 boasts an astoundingly artful design, all wrapped up into a 108-foot-long, knife-like hull that gives the vessel a definitive sporty edge. It has turned heads in the industry since its late 2022 debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, and now as 2023 slides into 2024, the SP model—and its many sister ships in the SL, SD, and SX ranges— is set to swivel some more heads as the Sanlorenzo Yachts line will soon be available to Northwest boaters via Worth Avenue Yachts. While all 23 of Sanlorenzo’s current models speak to the company’s long-held commitment to craftsmanship, the SP110 in particular is pushing the brand forward; take a gallery tour inside this gorgeous piece of performance art to find out just how.

55

The Great White: Designed by a veritable who's who of European design legends—exterior designer Bernardo Zuccon, Tilli Antonelli at Sanlorenzo product development, Marco Arnaboldi for the hull design, and Piero Lissoni for the interiors— the SP110’s sleek, razor-sharp silhouette was inspired by none other than the great white shark. The vessel boasts the brute strength to achieve speeds of up to 40 knots, but like its animalistic inspiration, also has the agility to maneuver quickly in tight space, as it is powered by a fractional hydro jet propulsion system consisting of three MJP waterjets that work in conjunction with three separate MAN V-12 engines. A 17-degree deadrise helps contribute to a smooth ride, and the vessel is also shallow on the draft at a nimble 4.6 feet. A straighter edge, sportier vertical windshield contributes to the athletic feel, while the aerodynamic silhouette maintains a clean, streamlined look, as the sideline portholes and hull flow effortlessly together in the same gleaming white hue.

56

Open Sesame: Onboard, its open concept living at its finest. Entering through the expansive glass sliding doors found on the aft deck (itself a massive 23-by-23-foot space), the eye is immediately drawn up as the lower and upper deck lounges are connected via an eye-catching, two-story open atrium that takes full advantage of the SP110’s height and expansive 27-foot-wide beam. Airy and artful, the interior is infused with light courtesy of floor-to-ceiling windows and sight lines that stretch from the main deck dining salon all the way out to the swimming platform. Internal spaces were configured around the double-height stern, which provided multiple, flex-use areas, with emphasis given to gathering and living spaces, and gave the main deck about 3 feet of additional ceiling height compared to other yachts of similar size. The connections between outside and in abound, with a foredeck lounge and rooftop deck providing additional options for sun-seekers.

57

Lighter + Brighter: The decor blends teak, resin, and lava stone to stunning effect, while mirrored surfaces continue to bounce light around the space. But it’s not just the interior design elements that contribute to the SP110’s light feeling, it’s the materials used to craft her as well. All that aforementioned glass that covers almost 80-percent of the boat? It’s a lightened-up laminated glass that helps to reduce the overall weight by almost 5 percent, and even reduces UV heat inside so that air conditioning needs to be run less. The fiberglass hull is topped by strong, yet light, superstructure crafted from carbon fiber and epoxy resin, and the builder used a special sound insulation material that is thinner than average, but still very effective at blocking noise. 58

59

P is for Performance: The SP110 is Sanlorenzo’s first sports-coupe design, the brand’s attempt to infuse smart, eco-conscious performance into a luxury look and feel. Those aforementioned, exceedingly quiet hydro jet engines can be operated independently, in a pair, or as a three-engine unit, which allows for greater flexibility and lower fuel consumption. The SP110 is also equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emissions control system, which reduces NOx emissions by up to 90 percent, and a rooftop full of solar panels that help offset the power needed to run the appliances onboard and negates the need to run generators while at anchor. The panels cover 375-square-feet and can generate 60Kw of power on a sunny day, just another example of how the SP110 seems to be equipped to be Sanlorenzo’s next-gen star.

60

“SANLORENZO HAS AN AFFINITY FOR PUSHING BOUNDARIES AND BEING FORWARD THINKING. THE SP110 IS NO EXCEPTION. THEIR COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION AND FUNCTIONAL ENGINEERING CAN BE SEEN THROUGHOUT THE YACHT DESIGN, STYLING, AND SYSTEMS.” - RAY PROKORYM, MANAGING PARTNER, WORTH AVENUE YACHTS SEATTLE

E XPE RT TAKE INTERVIEW BY KATE CALAMUSA / HEADSHOT COURTESY OF CARA KUHLMAN

Incoming Tide CARA KUHLMAN, the voice behind the digital media platform FUTURE TIDES, reports in on recent industry innovations—and what she expects for maritime in 2024. NWY: Future Tides reports on industry innovations and the maritime community in the Pacific Northwest. How did the founding vision for your publication first come about? CK: It started more than five years ago, with a very analog notebook where I jotted down stories I thought should be covered and what I would do at the helm of my own publication. I imagined a digital-first platform that would fill in the gaps I saw, and provide a new service for the region’s maritime community. In 2021, I participated in an intensive program for “entrepreneurial journalists” (it’s a thing!) and that notebook came off the shelf. My final presentation introduced Future Tides, a new media venture for recreational boaters, commercial mariners, and others who share our waterways. I’ve been building it ever since, applying my learnings from both the program and my professional experience. NWY: In 2021, you were awarded a Grow Boating grant from the Northwest Marine Trade Association. How did the grant and that overall experience shape Future Tides? CK: That grant felt like a great vote of 62

confidence from the community I aim to serve. The funding supported researching and writing a series of articles about the role of technology and innovation in boater education and safety. It also coincided with when I took US Sailing’s Safety-at-Sea course so I really immersed myself in the topic, and it’s one I could write a lot more about. However, a big takeaway after talking to multiple experts was that new tech aside, communication is critical. Getting the word out about safe boating practices and changing recreational boaters’ behavior, that’s where there’s a need for investment and innovation. NWY: What are a few of the most interesting innovations you have reported on in 2023? CK: Hydrofoils and hybrid propulsion are two innovations I’ve enjoyed reporting about lately because they are being applied to such a wide variety of vessels and use cases. In September, I got to ride on Candela’s hydrofoil electric powerboat. It’s very cutting edge but uses the same principles as a hydrofoil board for kiteboarding or wing foiling. The company’s reps said that since hydrofoil boards became more common a few years ago, people are

increasingly familiar with the concept, making it easier for Candela to explain what they’re doing—creating a more efficient boat by flying above the water. Hybrid propulsion stands out because fully electric propulsion doesn’t fully make sense yet for many marine applications. And similar to cars, charging infrastructure is lagging behind demand. However, many boat builders and operators are diving in through various hybrid systems, some of which are designed to transition along with the changing technology. NWY: Speaking of the electric and hybrid sectors, there is a lot of emphasis on making boating greener in the years to come. What innovations do you think have the most potential to influence the Northwest industry in that space? CK: More electric or hybrid options for repowering vessels, which often have a longer lifespan than their motors, could accelerate more widespread adoption. Electric vessels are also quieter, reducing ship noise which is known to impact (not only) whales but also the broader marine ecosystem. Shoreside charging

everywhere from the ports to the smallest marinas will be important. I’ve heard multiple times that continued improvements on battery design, capacity and safety will be a turning point. Another topic I’ve looked into with significant environmental impacts is what will happen to aging boats. Fiberglass, which has been used to build boats for more than 80 years now, has the potential to be recycled but that solution hasn’t become a reality. A few boat builders are considering the entire lifecycle of the vessels they design but it’s not a widespread practice. The last advancement I want to mention involves waterfront construction. A number of the region’s ports are taking on major redevelopments, century-old piers and pilings are condemned, and habitat restoration projects call for the removal of retaining walls. All this adds up to an opportunity to reshape and design waterfronts that balance access with the environment. NWY: As we look ahead to 2024, what maritime stories do you foresee taking shape? CK: A big story next year will be around state and federal funding. A once-in-a-generation amount of money has been allocated for

ambitious initiatives across the maritime sector and the next step will be seeing how it is used and if it helps achieve those goals in the coming years. Ferries will continue to make news as well. Washington State Ferries, as well as county and metro ferry services, have a long journey ahead addressing workforce and vessel shortages. On the recreation front, I expect to see more and more electric outboards out and about. I think people are increasingly aware this industry is changing drastically, and there’s a lot of optimism around that change. At the same time, in a rapidly changing region, our waterways are a comforting constant. They will continue to be a space for recreation, commerce, and discovery. About the Expert: Future Tides truly feels like the culmination of my career-to-date. I’ve sailed for a long time, coaching both youth and adults. As part of the senior staff at Sail Sand Point, I developed new programs with a focus on access and equity in boating. By chance, I landed at Kvichak Marine, a longtime boat builder in Ballard, where I experienced a new side of the industry, including the ups and downs of vessel construction and workforce development. I spent six formative years at GeekWire, a Seattle-based

tech and business news site, learning all about the scrappy side of media. That’s where I gained an appreciation for new technologies and writing about tech in an approachable way. In 2022, I joined KNKX Public Radio where I oversee online content and digital strategy. I’ve learned what it takes to sustain 24/7 radio, worked on podcasts and audio journalism, and helped tell stories from all around Western Washington, some involving boats. I love getting to follow my curiosity. Hearing from the community is also incredibly motivating. More and more, people are sharing what they are excited about or pointing me towards something they think I should report on. These tips often become stories. I definitely have a lot of questions but if I can answer someone else’s question, then I know I’m providing a service, and that’s what I founded Future Tides to do. >> To read Kuhlman’s latest stories on the industry, go to: futuretides.org.

TI G HT L INE S CONTRIBUTED BY MARK YUASA, WDFW

Cutthroat Competition MARK YUASA offers his best coaching advice for wrangling one of Washington’s feistiest catch-and-release fish: sea-run cutthroat trout. Just beneath the surface of a seemingly endless number of estuaries, bays, and inlets in Puget Sound and Hood Canal resides the sea-run cutthroat trout. The sea-run cutthroat trout are one of seven species of anadromous salmonids in the genus Oncorhynchus, and in late fall and winter these feisty fish provide decent catch-and-release fishing opportunities. During the 1980s, the sea-run cutthroat population saw a dramatic decline, and by the 1990s, fishery managers decided to make this a catch-and-release only fishery in all local marine waterways. Since then, the sea-run cutthroat—which average between 10 to 20 inches in length—has seen a steady improvement in numbers, and the bonus is that anglers can pursue them 24/7 throughout Puget Sound with the southern reaches being one of the prime hotspots during certain times of the year. A sea-run cutthroat, native only in North America from northern California to south-central Alaska, is an anadromous trout species that are born in rivers and streams, migrate out to saltwater locations and then return to spawn in rivers and streams. After spawning, adult cutthroat will move back out into the intertidal areas. Unlike other marine fish, you’ll often find sea-run cutthroat residing in areas with a varied bottom with rocks and gravel the size of a baseball. They also like to hide where trees overhang from the shoreline or within beds of eel grass. Another “go to” spot is around estuaries where freshwater from rivers or streams flush out into the saltwater. The prime time to look for sea-runs is just before or right after flood tide change. Another 64

tactic is to develop the ability to sight fish— you’ll often find them swimming an easy cast from the shoreline at depths of 10 to 20 feet but as shallow as 12 inches or less. Sea-runs can also be found where small baitfish and other prey congregate. Avoid pursuing them during an extreme outgoing tide as they prefer calmer water locations. If you plan to fish from the shoreline, stealth works to your advantage so don’t slosh about in the water and spook away the fish. There are times when you don’t need to put a foot in the water since these fish are often found within a short distance from the shoreline. Another factor to keep in mind is timing: when you find salmon fry there is the strong likelihood of a hungry sea-run cutthroat nearby. Most who fish for sea-run cutthroat don’t disclose their favorite fishing locations but in general southern Puget Sound is best in the winter and spring and central and northern Puget Sound are better in the summer and fall. As far as public access areas go, you can look for fish along the shorelines around the Tacoma/ Narrows Bridge, Redondo Beach, Lincoln Park to the Fauntleroy Ferry in West Seattle, Golden Gardens, Carkeek Park/Richmond Beach, Meadowdale Beach, and Picnic Point Park near Edmonds. Those with a boat, kayak, raft, or small car-topper boat will be able to access areas more easily, especially those along shorelines that are inaccessible from land. Again, motor noise will spook the fish so it’s wise that your watercraft be equipped with oars or an electric trolling motor. Since this is a shallow water fishery, you’ll also need to keep an eye out for boulders hidden just

under the water. A reliable pair of polarized sunglasses are high on the must-have list of fishing gear and they allow an angler to sight fish more easily and avoid those hidden dangers. As for fishing gear, most anglers will cast flies or poppers, but lures also work, and it’s best to match it up to the feed such as euphausiids and amphipods (zooplanktons), herring, candlefish, salmon fry, crab, sculpin, sand shrimp, and worms. A small spoon like a ¼- to 1/8-ounce Dick Nite or Rooster Tail spinner in a size 2 or 3 are good for casting with a spinning rod and reel. Use dark color patterns during bright, sunny days or when water conditions are clear. Brighter colors get the job done when the water lacks clarity or around covered areas. Remember: barbless hooks are required when fishing in all Puget Sound marine areas. As for casting a fly, the popular choices are marabou clouser minnows, muddlers, or poppers. Pick an 8- to 9-foot, 5- or 6-weight fly rod with a fast action. A sealed drag reel is best for use in saltwater. Fishing line is also vital when it comes to fly fishing and many anglers will have back-up reels filled with sinking lines at various sink rates, and another set up with a floating line. Bait is an option, but should be avoided since this is a catch-and-release fishery and fish will likely inhale them much deeper, leading to an increased mortality rate. Fish on! RAC ING SHE ET TEXT AND PHOTO BY DOUG HANSEN

Grand Total DOUG HANSEN wraps up 2023 with a recap of Seattle Yacht’s Club Grand Prix Regatta, always a competitive, celebratory, and culminating event on the local sailing calendar. The Grand Prix Regatta, hosted by the Seattle Yacht Club, stands as the flagship racing event in the Pacific Northwest fall season. As autumn’s final sail regatta, it represents the culmination of a whole summer of racing and practicing. Over three days, this event offers diverse experiences, from traditional long-distance racing to intense windward-leeward contests. A unique feature of “Grand Prix,” as it is commonly known, is that racing starts on Friday afternoon and sets the tone for the entire event. It typically features a single middle-distance race. Considering the working week’s start, many boats are sailing relatively short-handed. As a result, the Race Committee is kind enough to recognize this and skip the multi-lap buoy racing courses. While it does present some logistical and occupational challenges, Friday’s race offers a unique opportunity for sailors to play hooky, get out on the water, and get the weekend started. The weather on the inaugural day was impeccable, with a steady, northerly wind in the low teens and abundant sunshine. The race course took sailors on an unguided tour of central Puget Sound. It started by heading north to Edmonds, then crossing the Sound to Indianola just north of Bainbridge Island, where the fleet set their spinnakers for the downwind run. The race proceeded south around Blakely Rock, followed by a tight reach into Elliott Bay and 66

around Duwamish Head marker, right through the ferry lane into downtown Seattle. From here, boats turned back upwind and headed to Shilshole Bay for the finish. The fleet stacked up while tacking along the Magnolia Bluff to stay in the favorable current and catch the puffs that rolled down the high cliffs. With steady conditions and a straightforward course, Friday's race focused on pure velocity, rewarding those who could extract every ounce of speed from their vessels, and it sure set the stage for an exhilarating weekend of sailing. The subsequent two days of the regatta shifted the focus to windward-leeward racing around temporary marks set by the Seattle Yacht Club Race Committee. Both days, however, witnessed minor delays in the start of racing as the wind filled in late from the north. Nonetheless, once the wind did fill, it heralded in fantastic racing conditions with shockingly steady winds of around ten knots and once again, sunshine. Each fleet was able to get in six races over the weekend. The races were intense, with positions changing constantly and tight finishes with literally seconds separating winners and losers, showcasing the fierce competition within each fleet. At the end of the weekend, it’s fair to say that everyone gave it their all, and the top competitors found themselves at the top of the score sheet. Notably, two fleets had ties for first place, where it all came down to who won the

event's final race. In the J105 Fleet, Paul Viola and the team of Peer Gynt emerged victorious over John Aitchison and crew aboard Moose Unknown. Similarly, in ORC 2, Ian Christianson’s Annapurna edged out Abbey Norris’s Hydra, accumulating ten points over the weekend. Annapurna won by finishing second in the final race, while Hydra finished third, right on their heels. With the racing finished and the boats tucked away, the entire fleet made their way to the Seattle Yacht Club for a spectacular awards dinner, which is possibly the highlight of the weekend. While we often gather after racing for a drink on the dock, there is something special about everyone getting dressed up and joining together to celebrate one another and recognize the standout performances. The Seattle Yacht Club pulls out all the stops, with a beautiful dinner, drinks, and music that wraps up with an entire rundown of the podium finishers in each fleet. Now in its forty-sixth edition, the Grand Prix is more than just a sailing event; it is a celebration of sailors’ passion and skill on the water. From the mid-distance race on Friday to the windward-leeward races on the weekend, all characterized by fierce competition, this regatta encapsulates the essence of Pacific Northwest sailboat racing.

Holiday Spirit From the boat parades to parties, this cozy, rich, and velvety chocolate cocktail will spread “cheers!” all season long. If you enjoy holiday drinks, like I do, you must try the Verte Chaud. It reminds me of watching Seattle’s Christmas Boat Parade on Lake Union with this festive libation in hand. Sipping this hot chocolaty beverage as the brightly decorated boats convene and begin their promenade in front of Fremont Tugs on their way to Morrison’s Fuel Dock is a clear sign December is here. Whether you’re stringing shimmery lights on your boat and firing up the mains, or gathering at an onshore party to view the flotilla, the Verte Chaud is the perfect accompaniment to this or any time-honored holiday tradition. Featured in The Canon Cocktail Book, which I had the pleasure of assembling with Seattle-based Canon bar owner, Jamie Boudreau, the Verte Chaud is simple to make with only three ingredients. Jamie’s a big fan of Chartreuse, so you may want to tame down the portions in your Verte Chaud if you’re not as mad about French herbals as he is. But have it be known, Chartreuse and chocolate work wonders together. Just make sure you use a good quality, bitter chocolate so you can easily adjust the sweetness. If you use a cheap hot chocolate mix, you might find the resulting mixture overly sweet. For the wet cream, it’s made in the same manner as whipped cream; just stop before the cream becomes stiff. The aeration will allow the cream to sit neatly on top of the hot chocolate. Enjoy and happy holidays!

Verte Chaud Makes 1 cocktail 6 ounces prepared hot chocolate 2 ounces green Chartreuse 1 ounce wet cream, for topping In a hot glass (simply submerge the glass in hot water until hot), add the hot chocolate and Chartreuse. Stir and top with the wet cream.

A James Beard Award–winning cookbook and cocktail author with more than 50 published titles to his credit, Fraioli’s books have been featured on Ellen and the Food Network, and in Vogue, People, Forbes, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times. He resides in Bellevue, but keeps his boat (a 37-foot Riviera) in beautiful Anacortes, the gateway to his beloved San Juan Islands. Have a cookbook idea or project in mind? Call of the Wild The pristine islands and atolls of French Polynesia invite you to get off the beaten tourist track and chart your own course for adventure.

Few areas of the world are as alluring as the South Pacific, especially the jaw-dropping islands and atolls that comprise French Polynesia. Forget the hassle of vendors and overcrowding, these culture rich islands remain pristine and largely untouched, making it easy to step off the beaten tourist track and experience the true native beauty of this region. Fakarava & Toau After touching down in the North Pass of Fakarava, via a flight from Tahiti, and then stepping aboard your yacht, you’ll cruise south to fully explore this atoll, which is home to the second largest lagoon in the Tuamotu Atolls. The rectangular reef encloses such a rich ecosystem that it has been designated by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve and is a natural habitat for many rare species of birds, plants, and crustaceans. Get your bearings on day one and drink in the splendor before taking the time to enjoy the beautiful water ecosystems in the reserves. Snorkeling, kite boarding, and diving are just some of the options in these clear waters. After you emerge from the salt, be sure to picnic on one of the private pink beaches. While you’re relaxing, we’ll be entertaining the children with an island treasure hunt! Head onto land where you can visit the ancient Catholic church before you relax on board with a cocktail at sunset. While heading back north, cruise past some of the region's islets on the yacht’s tender to explore some uncharted destinations. Toau is known for its marine life, snorkeling, and coconut crab especially! This islet has a very small human population so the seclusion usually found in the breathtaking Toau lagoon provides a truly serene escape. Rangiroa & Bora Bora Home to one of the largest coral ring lagoons in the world, Rangiroa is an island that boasts plenty of attractions, whether you’re getting a spa treatment at the Kia Ora resort or viewing bottlenose dolphins in the lagoon. From here, you can easily fly to Bora Bora in the morning and enjoy unique spa treatments at the Four Seasons resort. Then why not start hunting for the perfect Tahitian black pearls in one of the amazing pearl shops of the island? From there, spend the day on the most beautiful lagoon in the world. Almost any water or land activity is possible—but a dive with the manta rays is highly recommended. Or, you could go 72

horseback riding along beautiful white sandy beaches, take a helicopter ride above the mythical island, or visit a Marquesan art gallery. To finish the day, have a special dinner on a private islet as traditional Tahitian musicians and fire dancers perform in front of you. Raiatea & Taha’a Located just two to three hours away from Bora Bora via your private yacht, the islands of Raiatea and Taha’a lie in the same lagoon, a unique phenomenon that helps making visiting both distinct islands a snap. Take a 4WD safari to visit the plantations and lush vegetation of Taha’a, also known as the Vanilla Island, and then in Raiatea, get to know ancient Polynesian culture by visiting the largest marae of the country—a sacred site that features a number of archeological stone structures and was once considered the central temple and religious center of Eastern Polynesia. Huahine & Mo’orea A wonderful stopover on your way to Mo’orea, Huahine is comprised of the southern Huahine-Iti and northern Huahine-Nui islands. This is an ideal spot for a cultural and fun day (a must-do is a traditional Polynesian picnic with local musicians and traditional games!) or its breathtaking beauty also encourages lounging on the yacht’s vast trampoline and just take it easy. Your last stop, Mo’orea is known as Tahiti’s sister island, and as well for its top spas and fine dining, you can also enjoy the island’s 18-hole, Jack Nicklaus designed golf course or alternatively, visit the dolphins at the Mo’orea Dolphin Centre for an interactive session in the water. Or, if you visit between August and October, spend time whale watching and maybe swimming or diving with the incredible humpbacks as they pass through. To complete your journey, you can either cruise or fly back to Tahiti; either way, you are sure to be stocked with stories for a lifetime. Lori Eastes is thrilled to be on the team at Worth Avenue Yachts because chartering private yacht vacations combines everything she loves: party planning, travel, and boats. With a background in hospitality, Lori is committed to providing an unparalleled experience for her clients.
