The Verdict is In I find it fitting that this year’s Seattle Boat Show begins on none other than Groundhog’s Day, a date where we as a nation halt our busy schedules for a few moments and look towards the spring—very much in the same way that the nine-day show acts as an unofficial kickoff to the spring boating season as the industry pauses, gathers its best and brightest, and looks towards the future. Thus, this month’s issue offers our exclusive preview of the can’t-miss highlights to be found at the show (see the feature on pages 49-55), as well as the interesting insider tidbits peppered throughout these pages such as the upcoming panel discussions in Maritime Missives on page 16; the Making Waves opener on page 21 featuring a zany new competition; the Finnish adventure brand Saxdor on page 22; and the Transformers-like Galeon Yachts brand that’s about to burst onto the Northwest scene on pages 56-61. You will be able to hop aboard Galeon’s 470 Sky at Bell Harbor during the exhibition. Those aren’t the only buzzy new boats to be found: Outer Reef Yachts launches the Azure 670 on pages 38-39; Ocean Alexander trumpets the arrival of its 27R on pages 40-41; and Oaksmith Yachts gives us a peek at the new Archipelago catamaran on page 42-43. Bonny Conny Those who flocked to see The Boys in the Boat movie adaption in theaters over the holidays may experience a sense of déjà vu at this month’s Seattle Boat Show as one uncannily familiar looking vessel will be on display: The 28-foot-long cedar wood coaching launch Conny that was used by Coach Al Ulbrickson during his coaching days at the University of Washington. Interesting fact: After falling into disarray following a 1971 boating accident, Conny was rescued in ‘75 by former Husky crew team rower Kirk Knapp, who spent years restoring her to former glory, finally finishing in 1998 after the original engine was discovered 150 miles away. Knapp kindly shared the photos seen here with us; flip to pages 49-55 for a peek at an exciting Boys in the Boat panel set to debut at the show that will feature none other than Knapp himself.

Sniff, Sniff, What's That Smell? Thursday, February 8th, marks Dogs on Deck Day at the Seattle Boat Show (more details beginning on page 49), and this is one pro pooch you just gotta see to believe. Meet Eba, a specially trained scent detection dog that works with her handler, Dr. Deborah Giles, on the water to ferret out orcas by detecting, well, excrement. (It sure gives the term “poop deck” a whole new meaning, eh?) Giles then uses scat collection to glean data to better understand the health of the endangered species; be sure to stop by the pair’s fascinating presentation at the show.

Pedal to the Medal: Seattle Boat Show to Debut ‘Landroplane’ Races This month’s Seattle Boat Show (SBS) is a time when experienced boaters get dead serious about preparing their vessels for 2024—but also conversely a time to watch full-grown adults pedaling around a track, pretending to be hydroplane racers: Welcome to SBS’s inaugural Pedal Boat Cup challenge! And while the race sounds like a fun lark all on its own, the human-powered challenge could also win participants free tickets, pit passes, and a Log Boom tie up to see the real hydroplanes race at the 2024 Seafair this summer. Sponsored by Auburn-based Ranger Tugs and Cutwater Boats, the new Pedal Boat Cup is the brainchild of Zach Umperovitch, a Rube Goldberg machine expert from the “Contraption Masters” show on the Discovery+ channel. Last year, Umperovitch wowed the SBS crowd with an elaborate (and humorous) boat launch machine that used a series of catapults, strings, levers, and gravitational knowledge to cast off a boat into a wading pool. This year, Umperovitch’s creativity will be focused on the pedal power of actual SBS attendees themselves. He has taken ordinary pedal/prowler boats and replaced their paddle wheels with tires so they can be ridden around on land; and the boats are painted in the signature SBS primary colors to stand out even more. During the show that runs from February 2-10, these reconditioned, brightly colored “landroplane” boats—with names like Miss Ranger Tugs, Miss Cutwater, and Miss Tug Nuts in fine Seafair hydroplane tradition— will race against each other in time trials on a 200-foot indoor track inside the Lumen Field Event Center.

All show attendees are welcome to compete in the Pedal Boat Cup races (kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult). There are no limits on the number of times people can sign up, and participants can sign up on a first-come, first-served basis at the booth. Each day, the racers will compete for a daily prize of two Seafair 2024 tickets for a three-day admission, plus pit passes, to see the hydroplanes compete for the HomeStreet Bank Cup and Gold Cup on August 2-4 (a $130 value). At the end of SBS, there will be a final drawing for the Pedal Cup Grand Prize: A coveted Yellow Section broadside tie on the Seafair Log Boom (a $925 value), providing some of the best views of the hydro races and Blue Angels aerobatics shows on Lake Washington. Finnish Saxdor Brand Comes to Northwest Via Silver Seas; Will Debut at SBS As the Seattle Boat Show (SBS) opens this month, a new vessel from Finland—the Saxdor 320 GTC—will make its Northwest debut by way of Seattle’s Silver Seas Yachts. The brand, which until now had only been available on the East Coast and the Gulf Coast of Texas, will give the Puget Sound boaters a closer look at its sleek, Scandinavian style that pairs enclosed cabin comforts with speedy, fuel-efficient runabout performance. The 320 GTC will have three Mercury engine options in single or twin configurations, ranging from 300 to 600 hp. The sporty design allows the boat to cruise at about 32 knots and reach 50 knots in a sprint. With an LOA of 32 feet, the 320 GTC features dual fold-out terraces, providing easy access to the cockpit from the sides and stern. Inside the pilothouse is a small galley to port, three helm chairs that can swivel around to face a dining table, and aft bench seating. Belowdecks is a forward head and cabin for two. Although the 320 GTC may look like it’s built for power, the model has proven to be family-friendly, with an isolated, floating floor for sound-suppression, says Silver Seas sales manager Billy Gilbert. “For a family getting into overnight boating, there is a dedicated closed-door primary stateroom with a separate enclosed head compartment,” he said. “Meanwhile, the pilothouse seating can optionally convert into a second berth as well, to accommodate sleeping four.” 22

Saxdor boats also have much to offer for Northwest boaters, who are used to climates known more for rain than sun. “We specifically wanted to bring in the 320 GTC coupe model, as Saxdor has expanded the pilothouse full beam, providing more space for passengers out of the elements,” Gibert said. He added, however, there is still plenty of room in the 320 GTC for summer boaters “to lay out on the sunbed that sits atop the cabin.” Since 2019, Helsinki-based Saxdor Yachts has become one of the fastest-growing boat companies in Europe, producing more than 1,000 boats in the 20’-40’ range at its factory in Elk, Poland. Saxdor’s founder, Sakari Mattila, also founded the Aquador, Paragon, XO, and Axopar brands, the latter of which can be found exclusively in the Northwest at Jeff Brown Yachts in Seattle. The Finnish company offers Mercury engines on all its boat models, and partners with brands such as Brunswick, Navico, and Simrad. The 320 GTC is “a very striking vessel that turns heads on the water,” said Gilbert, who will be on hand at the Silver Seas booth during SBS. But expect more to come from Saxdor and Silver Seas. “In the future,” he said, “we look forward to offering the all-new 400 model, which recently premiered in Cannes.” For more details on the brand, go to: silverseayachts.com.

Gig Harbor Boat Works Expands with New Home As the town of Gig Harbor welcomed the new year, one of its most well-known boat companies, Gig Harbor Boat Works (GHBW), finally found a new place large enough to accommodate its recent rapid growth and keep up with the doubling in demand for its small-craft boats. The new facility is a much-needed expansion, but it is also a consolidation, allowing the company to bring in its Tacoma-based, fiberglass-hull lamination operation under the same roof and, more importantly, on the same side of Puget Sound. The consolidation will eliminate the need to transport completed fiberglass hulls across the Tacoma Narrows each time to be assembled in its Gig Harbor fabrication shop. Starting this winter, all these operations can be completed within the same 12,500-square-foot building less than half a mile from the company’s original headquarters. The new centralized production facility will include an insulated, ventilated, and heated lamination shop, an assembly and woodshop area for customization work, loading docks for incoming and outgoing shipments, and administrative offices. GHBW will also have some warehouse space in which it can keep a small inventory of stock boats available for customers who don’t wish for specialized orders. Founded in 1986 by David Robertson, the Boat Works first operated in a two-room boat shop on Peacock Hill, about a half-mile from the Gig Harbor waterfront. Over the years, the firm has built thousands of lightweight rowboats, tenders, and sailing dinghies, using the back room for assembly and the front room

for display models. In recent years, however, the company has gained greater national fame for its work, resulting in dozens of backed-up orders overflowing into both rooms at its old headquarters. In 2023, for the first time in its history, GHBW sold more boats to out-of-state customers than to in-state customers—a testament to how much it has outgrown its humble beginnings. Today, the company builds 10 different small-craft models, ranging from 8’ to 17’ in length. Although these boats are all made of modern fiberglass material, they are based on traditional wooden working boat designs. Most recently, GHBW has launched a few stand-alone rowing and sailing boats, including the 17' Salish Voyager, a multi-purpose adventure boat. The original GHBW Peacock Hill facility, recognized for its red wall exterior and barn-like architecture, will remain as the company’s sales and marketing locations, allowing for more room for customer-focused displays of new boat models. In addition, GHBW has expanded its marketing efforts with the hiring of Laura Hammond as its new marketing manager and Arnie Hammerman of Brand Builder Media, who will handle public relations and media buying for the in-house team. Once the moves are completed and the new facility is fully operational, Gig Harbor Boat Works said it intends to offer regularly scheduled factory tours to showcase its crews in action and to demonstrate the boat-building process. Oaksmith Adds Jasper Marine, UP Boats to 2024 Client List In preparation for the new boating season, Seattle sales and brokerage firm Oaksmith Yachts has added two new boat brands to its stable of clients, Jasper Marine and UP Boats, both of which have been catching the interest of Northwest boaters for their toughness and imaginative use of innovative materials. The first model in the Jasper line represented by Oaksmith, the Defender 22, is an all-aluminum workhorse built in Gibsons, British Columbia, and well-versed in the needs and climate demands of Northwest boaters and anglers. It’s new, no-frills insulated cabin and 8’6” beam makes the Defender 22 very stable and roomy for its relatively small size, and its quick access to the bow through a central door allows for easy movement during extended trips. The boat is perfectly suited for fishing trips, as well, with ample storage space, along with comfortable fold-down seating in the cockpit and bench seating on both sides of the bow. Defender also offers customized touches,

such as cockpit bait wells, rod holders, bait prep stations, and extra side and transom doors. Twin Mercury 150 hp outboards provide nimble maneuverability in shallow areas. For the Florida-based UP Boats, the carbon-fiber foam sandwich materials used often pique the greatest interest. The ultra-lightweight materials used in UP dinghies, tenders, and chase boats, measuring 10’ to 15’ long, are extremely strong and provide excellent planing, even at low speeds. Their minimal weight makes the tenders easy for one person to beach and requires less powerful outboards to achieve peppy speeds. The wide, rigid gunwales around everything but the stern make the UP vessels essentially floating benches, with plenty of room underneath for storage—often with twice the volume found in other conventional tenders of their size. Moving south to the Port of Everett, Tapped Public House recently inked a deal to open its fourth Puget Sound location in a brand new, 12,000-square foot complex to be constructed just south of the buzzy new Fisherman Jack’s and South Fork Baking Co. building located near Hotel Indigo. Joining Tapped in what is now being called “Restaurant Row” will be Rustic Cork Wine Bar, Hamilton Cellars, and Menchie’s at the Marina; Tapped proffers an array of Northwest-inspired small bites and a wealth of beers and ciders on, you guessed it, tap. Then, just a hop, skip and a jump away to the south, will be the new home of The Net Shed, a long-hoped-for outpost that will offer a unique restaurant-slash-retail concept with a fish n’ chips restaurant and bar, paired with a year-round fish market so that boaters can grab a filet to cook onboard. “Our newest concept is inspired by the Port and heritage of the site, with a local and seasonally driven curated selection of world-class seafood,” said Sean Drought of Way Hospitality Group, The Net Shed’s proprietor. “The market and fish bar’s offerings will change daily, just like the tides. Our goal is to be able to put a quality taste and flavor on the plate that is locally grown, harvested, and caught in our culinarily abundant region of the Puget Sound.” Both Tapped and The Net Shed are expected to offer plenty of outdoor dining space for drinking in those Port views, and both establishments broke ground in early 2024 with exact opening details to come soon. Ocean Alexander 27R This impressive 88-footer available from Alexander Marine is chockablock with high-end accommodations, luxury amenities, and polished finishes. In collaboration with superyacht designer Evan K. Marshall and Arrabito Naval Architects, Ocean Alexander presents the newest of its luxury yacht line, the 27 Revolution. With a beam of more than 20 feet and a nearly vertical bow, the impressive 88-foot vessel makes efficient use of its open space, providing vast areas for entertainment and social gathering, as well as high-end accommodations for up to eight guests in four staterooms, plus additional bunking for a four-person crew. Entering onto the aft deck, visitors will notice an enormous wooden swimstep that can be lowered hydraulically below the waterline. On the forward edge of the swim-step platform is a cozy area behind sliding glass doors called the beach club, with a settee, a small wet bar, an ice maker, and a minifridge for watersports refreshments. Up the steps to the aft deck is a much larger al fresco space for dining and cocktails, with a U-shaped forward-facing settee and center table aft of a stone-topped wet bar. Inside the salon, enormous windows give the 27R a light, airy feeling, providing commanding views all around. The minimalist, modern-style furniture includes L-shaped sofas, a formal dining table and custom chairs for up to 10 people. For entertainment, an optional 50” TV screen can descend from the ceiling. To port is the fully equipped galley, with Cambria stone countertops, a stainless-steel kitchen sink, a Subzero refrigerator, and space for a trash compactor, an Asko dishwasher, and a 30” Jenn-Air microwave, electric cooktop, and oven. 38

The starboard side passage includes access to a day head and a door to the side deck, which leads to a voluminous bow seating area, plus a large sunpad forward of the helm windshield. Farther forward in the interior is the owner’s stateroom on the same boat deck level, which includes a centerline king-size berth, stone countertops, a walk-in closet, a vanity table, a chaise lounge and ottoman, and separate his-and-her en suite heads and showers. To port and down a set of stairs is a similarly sized forward VIP stateroom, with a queen-size berth, en suite head, and a custom settee. Two more guest staterooms and heads are located amidships, with a third stateroom equipped with two twin beds that can be slid together to form one berth. A fourth lower multi-purpose cabin can be optionally converted into another berth, a utility room with a washer/dryer, or a fitness area. Crew quarters with three berths and a separate head are located farther aft. A stairway from the boat deck leads up to the main helm, equipped with a full suite of Garmin navigations tools. Aft of the helm is the spacious skylounge and flybridge area, with many custom configurations available, including large seating areas, a wet bar, a custom outdoor grill, and an optional open-air jacuzzi. Powering it all are twin MAN V12 diesel engines, which produce 1,650 hp, giving the 27R a cruising speed of about 16 knots and a range of 574 nautical miles. Docking procedures are made easier with hydraulic Side-Power bow and stern thrusters.

The teak-paneled pilothouse includes a settee on a raised platform, one Naugahyde Stidd helm chair, and a custom Outer Reef wood steering wheel at the helm with Hypro hydraulic steering. The helm features plenty of space for display screens, an overhead electronics console, Glendinning engine controls, a 4” magnetic compass, and bow thruster controls. Side decks with non-skid surfacing and weathertight doors lead from the pilothouse and cockpit to the foredeck area. Situated below the Portuguese bridge is a generous U-shaped seating area with a central table—another perfect spot for al-fresco cocktails and conversation. From the pilothouse, a floating staircase leads up to the flybridge, which can be covered in a forward clear enclosure in inclement weather.

Archipelago 47 Explore more aboard the Archipelago 47, a sublimely sophisticated, fuel-efficient, ocean-ready power catamaran set to make its grand debut in the Northwest via Oaksmith Yachts.

U.K.-based Archipelago Expedition Yachts, which launched in 2021, has teamed up with British naval architecture firm Chartwell Marine to create the Archipelago 47, a fuel-efficient, ocean-ready power catamaran with a range up to 3,000 nautical miles. Unlike some Class A vessels built for rough seas and gale-force winds, the new 47 is more than just a sturdy long-range yacht. It is also appointed with lavish touches of sleek, modernist luxury not usually found in catamarans of its size. The 47’s shallow draft of less than 3’ also gives it the ability to explore inlets and coastlines more closely than most offshore cruisers. With room for up to eight people and highly customizable for three or four cabins, the all-aluminum cat features a wide, wooden cockpit deck with movable seating, including a sofa, table, and two deck chairs. Stairs on either side of the cockpit provide access to the wrap-around side decks and can be lifted up to reveal cavernous storage spaces for gear or watercraft underneath. Through the glass door to the interior is a comfortable salon with light-colored custom wood paneling, an L-shaped settee and ottoman to port, and a galley located aft to starboard. Appliances include a dishwasher, oven, microwave, ceramic cooktop, refrigerator, freezer, and fresh water-maker. Farther forward is the minimalist helm station with Raymarine touch-screen controls, spaces where an iPad or laptop can be secured, if necessary, and an array of navigational equipment, such as a depth-sounder, radar, log-speedometer, bow thruster controls, a chartplotter, autopilot, GPS, and compass. The set-up resembles a

classic work-boat arrangement, with overhead engine controls, a forward-facing windshield, and a wooden ship’s wheel. The interior layout provides unobstructed, 360-degree views around the salon and helm areas, but also features blackout curtains that can be rolled down from the ceiling so the captain can see the controls more clearly while underway at night without disturbing other guests socializing in the salon. The ergonomically designed helm chair is also a striking visual from the rear, with a high, triangular-shaped headrest. The spacious hardtop above features operational sunroofs over the helm station, plus a large storage rack capable of handling several kayaks, paddleboards, bicycles, or small tenders. Optional solar panels can also be secured to the roof to provide some power to the electronics. Two sets of ladder stairs on each side of the salon lead to the cabins. The master stateroom to port includes an aft double bed, a desk and chair configuration, and an en suite head and shower at the port bow. To starboard, the guest cabins include an aft berth, a shared head and shower, and forward, bunk-style twin berths. Tall vertical side windows and openable skylights on the ceiling provide great views, ventilation, and natural light. In some custom layouts, a washer/dryer combo can also be included on either side. Standard engine information on the Archipelago 47 has not yet been announced, but the manufacturer said it expects the powertrain to produce about 450 hp and speeds of 15-30 knots, using a variety of propulsion options, from diesel to hybrid-electric to all-electric options. 43

Classic 1938 Nevins-Built Sparkman & Stephens Yawl Begin your own chapter in the beloved Odyssey’s story: The 1938 Yawl is now available for sale via NW Yachtnet.

The Odyssey, a beloved fixture that has sailed the waters of Puget Sound as the Sea Scout Ship 190 training vessel in Tacoma for the past 45 years, has recently retired. To say “they don’t make them like that anymore” is an understatement, and now there is a rare chance to own, restore, and preserve a piece of U.S. history. The Sparkman & Stephens designed yawl, launched at Nevins Shipyard in New York in 1938, was originally built for Barklie McKee Henry and wife Barbara Vanderbilt Whitney. The wooden-hulled beauty was the biggest boat built that year. Sailing the waters off the Eastern seaboard, she logged trips to Cuba, the Galapagos Islands, and beyond, then went on to an illustrious career as a commissioned ship for the US Navy during WWII. Afterwards the ship, now the USS Saluda (IX87), not only patrolled the coastlines of America, but research conducted onboard helped develop SONAR technology and underwater warfare as we know it today. During her time with the Navy in San Diego, she also was a regular sight on the Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race circuit— even winning the First to Finish Trophy in 1950. In 1974, she made her way up the coastline to Washington and her final duty assignment with the Navy at NAS Whidbey Island. In 1978, she joined the Sea Scouts in Tacoma, where she has remained as Tacoma’s Tall Ship ever since. Today, climbing aboard is like stepping back in time where stories of the past are held safe—and if these walls could talk, oh, the tales they would tell. From teak cabin floors throughout to early historic artifacts like the main salon gimbaled table, aft owner cabin flip-top vanity, and the stunning antique desk found in the captain’s quarters, many of the ship’s original details appear mostly as they did during Odyssey’s heyday, albeit in need of some TLC. Fitted with ten berths, two heads, and a current COI (Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection), this a perfect charter opportunity for the right outfit.

Additional features include a double planked hull exterior constructed of 1.125-inch-thick Honduran mahogany, with the inner hull made of 1-inch-thick white cedar. A total sail area covers 3,453 square feet, between the 1,234-square-foot fore triangle, 1,872-square-foot main sail, and 347-square-foot mizzen sail, all held steady with 50,000 pounds of lead ballast at the bottom her keel. In need of a mainmast replacement and further restoration, the vessel’s hardware, rigging, and sails remain in storage. A list of recent upgrades includes a 2015 repower of the main John Deere engine, new generators as well as major repairs and maintenance that took place during most recent haulout from December 2022 through March 2023. A timeless classic, the Odyssey is ready for a new beginning with the right buyer.

Get Amped Up ( Daily throughout the show; check exhibitors’ list for exact show floor locations ) Exhibitors always bring the best and brightest new vessels to the show (see pages 22, and 56-61 for just a few examples), but this year’s selection seems to be especially electric, as in electric boats. In addition to the industry leaders like X Shore (local dealer Signature Yachts will display both the X Shore 1 and Eelex 8000 in their display), fellow Swedish brand Candela has joined the party this year. (During a recent endurance challenge, the electric, hydrofoiling Candela C-8 set a new world record for the longest distance driven by an electric boat in a day—420 nautical miles in 24 hours.) Along with those vessels, come a slew of companies touting hybrid and e-products: Propel, makers of electric propulsion systems; Blue Marine, installers of electric propulsion for sailboats and tenders, plus lithium battery upgrades, solar and system monitoring; Greenline Yachts, brokers of hybrid yacht lines; and Mercury Marine, with their two new electric outboard motors, the Avator 20e and Avator 35. Also creating buzz in other markets: Stabicraft, which opened a Port Angeles facility in 2022, is bringing their new amphibious StabiX craft to the show floor; La Mare debuts a modern house-yacht concept; and, yet another Swedish darling, Jaxtar, is set to appear with their tough aluminum exploration boats. The future of boating is bright indeed.

Seek out Boat Show Bill….and Bill Murray ( Saturday, February 2nd; all day long during show hours ) Punxsutawney Phil might be looking for his shadow on this date, but is the weather in Pennsylvania really a good indicator of what we can expect in the Northwest? Instead, you can ask the SBS resident groundhog, Boat Show Bill, who will be roaming the halls at the show on February 2 and making his predictions for spring and summer boating. Then, it’s time to go on a scavenger hunt for Bill Murray, the star of the 1993 film “Groundhog Day.” Seek out a photo of the famous comedian—there will be one in each Hall—for a chance to win a whimsically curated themed gift basket containing a DVD of the movie, popcorn, a Bevmo gift card, a Yeti tumbler, and 4 tickets to the 2025 Seattle Boat Show. If you find Murray, stop by the info booth before you leave. In exchange for his whereabouts, staff will issue participants an enter-to-win form for the prize.

Whet Your Whistle; Be a Kid Again ( Both Saturdays, February 2nd and 9th, and Sunday, February 3rd; Youth Boating Center; 12-3 p.m. ) You’ve spied them out on the lake, now sweeten your day by sleuthing them out on land: The young sisters behind Lemons For Good, Lake Union’s famous floating lemonade stand, will be setting up shop in the kid’s zone to serve up free glasses of lemonade for attendees. With a loan and a little help from their father, Quinn and Kate Carner started their business in 2021 to earn money and to give back. One-third of their proceeds support micro-loan programs for women in developing countries and their favorite charity, the Rainier Animal Fund, which provides free veterinary care to families and pets in need. Bring the kiddies by for some inspiration, and then be sure to stick around for the other activities happening in the Youth Center, which include a toy boat building station, STEM-based activities centered around the marine world, and the ever-popular paddle boat pool. (Maybe have them practice there before challenging them to the “landroplane” races nearby; see page 21 in Making Waves for more info.)

The experienced boatbuilders from Duckworks Boat Builders Supply, folks from local boatbuilding nonprofits, and even some volunteers will be working together to assemble a stitch-and-glue boat kit over the course of the nine days of the show. Stop by and follow along to witness the transformation of two-dimensional plywood parts into a pretty, polished, and portable dinghy—a lightweight 10-foot Scout crafted from a Duckworks kit. This is more than just a spectator sport. The fully-assembled boat will be raffled off at the end of the boat show, so snap up a few raffle tickets to get some skin in the game. Proceeds from raffle sales will be donated to the participating nonprofit organizations that are providing volunteers to help with the kids’ boatbuilding activity and the boatbuilding demo. The raffle winner will not only win the boat, but also gets to choose which of the participating maritime nonprofits receive the proceeds from the raffle!

Go Behind the Scenes with the Boys in the Boat Story ( Sunday, February 4th; Club Level; 1 p.m. ) In addition to stopping by the 1936 cedar coaching skiff known as Conny (located in the Antique and Classic Boat Society area in the East Hall; read more about Conny on page 16), aficionados of the beloved The Boys in the Boat story can delve even further into the intricacies outlined in Daniel James Brown’s 2013 book and the recently released movie directed by George Clooney. Pose your burning questions to an esteemed panel comprised of: Kirk Knapp, owner of Conny; Melanie Barstow, founder of the ASUW Shell House tour; John Tytus, president of Pocock Racing Shells; and Yaz Farooq, a two-time Olympian and the current UW women’s rowing head coach. The panel will be hosted by the incredibly knowledgeable Eric Cohen, the resident UW Rowing historian, who will lead a presentation on the team’s epic quest for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics before the Q+A portion. “The level of rowing experience, and inside knowledge of the Boys in the Boat story and movie is unsurpassed with this group,” states Cohen. “And this is the first time all of them will be together at one time. It will make for a highly entertaining and fascinating inside look at this story.” (In other words: Be sure to snag a spot early, this one will be packed; tickets for this event are $20.)

Meet Eba, the Celebrity Orca-ScatSniffing Dog (Thursday, February 8th; Seminar Stage #3; 3 p.m.)

Attention all furry first mates: Be sure to bring your humans along to this paw-sitively fascinating presentation from Dr. Deborah Giles and Eba, the dog, from the local organization Wild Orca. They are part of the annual Dogs on Deck Day at the show February 8. Eba, a pit bull-corgi-terrier-mix rescue, works along Giles to detect the scat of our local orca whales, which is then collected and studied. The hope is to glean important information about killer whales, ranging from nutrition status and stress levels to the presence of parasites, fungus, and pollutants like plastic—all data that can help explain the threats facing the endangered species. Listen in at the aptly named “From Poop to Policy” presentation at 3 p.m. or stop by for a snap with the pair at the Dogs on Deck Day photo booth from 4-6 p.m. Remember, pooches are welcome all day long February 8, but must be pre-registered on the website ahead of time.

Mercurial. It’s a fitting word to describe the weather in our beloved Pacific Northwest, especially during the upcoming spring shoulder season, when a day out on the water can bring everything from abundant sunshine and mild temps to dark clouds and sleeting rain, or maybe even a rogue hailstorm or two. With that in mind, boaters here naturally demand a vessel that can withstand the ever-changing elements and perform well throughout the seasons. However, the question has long remained: Could there be a singular design that allows adventurers to fully enjoy any kind of weather Mother Nature dishes out? Billy Gilbert, sales manager for Silver Seas Yachts in Seattle, sure thinks so. His proposed solution is the Galeon Yachts line, a Poland-based, family-operated yacht builder founded in 1982, then introduced to the U.S. market in 2016, and now will make its Northwest debut at this month’s Seattle Boat Show (SBS). One of the trademarks of Galeon-built boats are the customizable, flex-use spaces found as part of what the brand calls “Beach Mode,” with design features such as fold-out extendable wing platforms, full beam hydraulic swim platforms, stunning stretches of aft and side glass paneling, and lower helm power sunroofs that open to

expand the vessel’s overall footprint. Created in collaboration with Tony Castro Design Studio, these attributes allow for spacious open-air social zones while at rest, with everything then tucking back in so that the vessel can run fully enclosed or shelter passengers against any challenging weather conditions. It’s the same basic concept as a Transformer toy, bur recreated in real life to stunning effect. For example, in the Beach Mode package of the 470 Sky model set to appear at SBS, there are two of the aforementioned fold-out terraces located both port and starboard that expand the vessel’s 14’ 2” beam out to a roomier 18 ’7”. To port, this platform can be configured as an alfresco bar that connects directly to the light-bathed galley. Hullside windows run the length of the vessel, providing natural light belowdecks in the roomy owner’s suite and to the main level salon. This area further benefits from an oversized, steeply raked windshield that spans the lower helm, which also has a retractable side window and power sunroof overhead. Operational aft side windows allow for cross breezes to flutter through on fine days, while folding, accordion-style glass doors open the galley up to the aft deck itself, where a U-shaped sofa is primed for lounging

and easy access to the full beam, almost four-feet wide swim platform located a few steps below. (An additional package also offers up a hydraulic stowage compartment and a pull-out grilling station.) Up top on the skydeck, there’s more versatility to be found, with another seating area as well as an elevated helm station that can all be covered up with retractable clamshell doors to protect against the elements. In addition to the jigsaw-puzzle design that spans all three levels, and the three berths that can be configured to whim, the finishes aboard are smartly sophisticated with dark walnut matte cabinetry, diamond-stitched upholstery, and supple suede details. Attention to detail has also been paid to the exceedingly streamlined, Volvo Penta-powered fiberglass hull that has been crafted bow to stern in one of the brand’s two Poland shipyards. (Galeon is one of the most vertically integrated yacht builders in Europe, controlling every part of the design and manufacturing process.)

In addition to the skybridge designs, Galeon also offers flybridge models—a subsection Gilbert states would also suit the Northwest’s variable weather conditions, touting such features as a fully rotating aft seating unit to take in the surf and helm access doors to make maneuvering in the slip or through the Ballard Locks that much simpler—as well as hardtop designs like the buzzy new HTC 450 that debuted at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show back in October. This sporty model is highlighted by such weather-ready features as an expansive hydraulic glass roof that spans the full length of the vessel, as well as a drop-down platform on each side of the cockpit to provide more outdoor recreational space beyond the vessel’s 20’8” beam. Shipping & Handling DMITRY FARBER, CEO of new Seattle Boat Show exhibitor FLORIDA MARITIME TRADING YACHT TRANSPORT outlines the company’s model for getting your yacht from here to there with ease. NWY: Florida Maritime Trading (FMT) transports yachts across the world—shipyard to shipyard, buyer to buyer, shipyard to buyer, and personal vessels voyaging to new destinations. How has the company set up their operations in such a way to be able to handle all these different types of transports and passages? DF: Aside from our good looks and obvious smarts, our model is to provide truly unique, all-in door-to-door service. We take it personally, paying attention to the utmost details of each project and cover all aspects of the transport, including pick up from the factory, yard or marina, delivery of the vessel to its departure port, loading it onboard the shipping container, delivery to final port and, finally, the hand delivery of the yacht to the client’s home or home port. Our model of coordination makes it turnkey for the customer, as we provide extra services like shrink wrap, captains to handle the vessels, customs clearance, and attendance onboard, covering all aspects of yacht transport from marina to ship to marina. We work hard on being always available to our customers; most of our bookings are referrals or repeat customers, we have pretty good retention rate. Many of our clients sign round-trip bookings to and from key trades so they can plan their summers, or the winters chasing sunny days and the best weather. We often see owners spending six months here in Florida, and then the other six in the Med or Asia or the Pacific Northwest.

We have been working on developing transports to new markets and promoting sailing in the Great Lakes, Indonesia, the Med, the Adriatic Sea, Turkey, the Pacific Northwest, and even Alaska. It is always fun when clients ask where should we go this summer? We say, close your eyes, spin the globe, and point a finger, and we will make it happen.

NWY: Say a boater needs their yacht transported from here in Seattle to a destination in the Mediterranean. How long does setting up a transport like this usually take? And, how would this transport differ from say, shipping a vessel from Seattle just farther down the West Coast to San Diego? DF: Some routes are more remote and less traveled and require longer to find the right cargo combination to position a vessel there. Usually, the most cost-effective way to deliver a yacht to its destination would be to employ a cargo vessel already heading that direction with other cargo. In that example, direct routes from Seattle to the Med are not very common, so we would first move the yacht from Seattle, or perhaps Victoria B.C., to Fort Lauderdale in Florida, then transfer on another vessel heading from Florida to the Med. Ships from the West to East coasts are available every 30-45 days, and ships from Florida to the Med are available every 7-15 days. For boaters looking to travel down the coast, we often recommend the following route: Once we load our ship in Victoria, the next stop is Ensenada and La Paz, and a few clients take advantage of taking their yachts to La Paz or Ensenada to enjoy Mexico’s Pacific Coast and then California. (This trip will only take 5-9 days versus the trip from Victoria to Florida will be about 23 days, for reference.) Setting up a transport is recommended at least 30 days in advance or more, since space on ships fills up and the ships may run behind schedule depending on canal crossings, port congestions, weather and cargo delays that affect arrival schedules. The rule of thumb is if you want to be in the Med for the charter or vacation season, go a month early in case of delays

ABOUT THE EXPERT: I have been in maritime industry since 2006 when I got started working with my father on our family business located in Chicago. We opened a loading warehouse with loading bays and came up with the technique to load 3-5 cars in 40’ containers to ship them worldwide to meet demand. They were mostly high-end cars and collector items. Soon our clients started asking to add boats to their collections of toys, so we reinvented the system to load smaller boats in 40’ containers and some larger boats (up to 44’ long) on flat trucks. As our regular clients’ appetites grew for bigger yachts, we started seeing more referrals and requests for moving bigger yachts in 50’-150’ range and FMT started chartering our own lift on vessels to serve demand for loading bigger yachts. I remember it was the fall of 2012 when we hired our first lift on a vessel operated by SAL Heavy Lift and loaded 3 boats —an Inace 85 trawler, an Azimut 80, and a Magnum 55 speed boat—to transport them from Port Everglades to Korea. Since then, it has become a regular endeavor to charter lift on vessels in key trades for us. In 2022, we had 11 charters, and in 2023, 14 charters, most of which were from Florida to the Med, Turkey and Adriatic and back; the U.S. to the Caribbean and South America; or East-West Coasts transfer here stateside. What I love most about my job is meeting people from all around the world and hearing their stories, passions, and dreams. Each project is unique and has a story to tell, I enjoy learning about why our clients want yachts moved and being part of their dream to make it happen.

NWY: How has your industry changed in recent years? Are there any new innovations that are influencing how you transport vessels? DF: The yacht transport industry is relatively young compared to the maritime industry, which has been around for centuries. Starting from the 1980s, the yacht transport industry has been continually evolving, with cradle systems and lifting techniques improving, our loadmasters are getting better and more experienced, vessel crews are more familiar with the intricate nature of super cargo handling, and yacht navigation routes have been expanding. With that in mind, here at FMT we have been considering getting our own dedicated vessels to use under long-term vessel charter programs or purchasing cargo ships and have them operate along key routes. It is my dream to own cargo vessels and to put them on dedicated trade lines with cargo holds used for brokers and friends to move other commodities, and to give the yachting community a predictable schedule so they can plan and know that our ships will always come.

Buoying Expectations The forecast for the spring and summer salmon fisheries is looking bright: MARK YUASA fills in your calendar with a bevy of options in the months ahead. There’s a beacon of light ahead for Columbia River salmon fisheries in 2024! The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) released early forecasts for the Columbia River spring, summer, and fall Chinook and sockeye fisheries that likely point toward decent fishing opportunities. The wild and hatchery spring Chinook forecast is 187,400, compared to a forecast of 315,600 and an actual return of 216,586 in 2023. Despite this drop, if the numbers fall around the prediction, the 2024 return could still potentially be the sixth largest spring return seen in the last ten years and the 18th largest since 1979. In general, spring Chinook returns over the past several years have been trending upward. Improved ocean conditions, ideal outmigration paths due to the lack of drought, flooding, or dangerous elevated water temperatures could be some of the positive factors towards this resurgence. The spring Chinook run moves into the Columbia River from February through June and peaks in March through early- to midApril, with spawn in tributaries from August through October. It isn’t unusual each winter to see the first spring Chinook caught in early February in the Lower Columbia, Multnomah Channel, or Lower Willamette River. Under the current permanent WDFW regulations, the 2024 spring Chinook fishery on the Lower Columbia is open daily through March 31 from Buoy 10 to the Interstate-5 Bridge. On the Washington side of the Columbia, the 2024 spring Chinook forecast for Kalama is 1,900; Cowlitz, 4,700; Lewis, 3,400; Wind, 4,200; Drano Lake, 5,300; and Klickitat, 1,300. On the Oregon side, the Willamette River 66

forecast is 48,700. Washington and Oregon fishery managers will officially consider Columbia River spring Chinook fisheries in late February. Extending the season is possible if the run appears larger than expected. Other Promising Forecasts In 2023, the early summer fisheries for sockeye and Chinook on the Upper Columbia River up to Brewster were above par, and anglers will likely see the good times roll along in 2024. During the past several years, anglers have found fair to excellent catches depending on the timing. For example, the 2024 Upper Columbia summer Chinook salmon predicted return is a promising 53,000, down from a forecast of 85,400 and near an actual return of 54,722 in 2023. When the Upper Columbia summer Chinook fishery opened on July 1 in 2023, fishing was good right out of the starting gate. The month of July is the best period, and it can stay productive into early August as waves of fish move upstream and hold in cooler water. Anglers can track when it is time to wet a line by checking the dam counts along the Columbia. The hype around the Upper Columbia sockeye fishery may hold up its reputation again during the summer of 2024 as a promising forecast of 401,700 is expected to push into the river. The upper-river fisheries are fueled by an Okanogan sockeye forecast of 288,700 in 2024 (187,400 was forecasted with an actual return of 179,655 in 2023, and 175,700 and 513,317 in 2022). Many of the sockeye linger in the Brewster Pool; and between Pateros and Brewster is a popular early-summer, deep-water salmon fishing location in Upper Columbia.

Sockeye migrate from the confluence just below Chief Joseph Dam, north into headwater lakes in British Columbia that are known for a notoriously warm water barrier and changing river flow patterns each summer. In 2023 and 2022, colder water throughout the mid- and upper-Columbia had sockeye shooting straight up into the Brewster Pool and this generated very good fishing from July through mid-August. The summer-migrating sockeye are learning to adapt their upstream migration timing in recent years; therefore, most fish returns are peaking sooner than later in the summer. Over the past few decades, the run would peak by early July, but it’s now shifted to late June and has resulted in higher sockeye survival in recent years. The Lake Wenatchee sockeye salmon forecast is also promising with a whopping 97,000, up from a 44,300 forecast in 2023 with an actual massive return of 146,875. The 2024 forecast is well above the spawning escapement objective of 23,000 at Tumwater Dam, and, if that happens, look for an excellent late-summer sport fishery in the lake. Other statewide salmon forecasts will occur during a WDFW public meeting in March, with updates in the months beyond. This meeting will debut many forecasts for Washington salmon including Chinook, coho, sockeye, chum, and pinks, so be sure to get those lines ready and stay tuned. Drinking the Kool Aid A new chapter begins for DOUG HANSEN as he joins the ranks of the growing local J70 fleet with the purchase of his own racing boat. This new year of 2024 brings a spritely start to one design sailing in Seattle. The J70 has quickly taken hold in the Salish Sea, and the crystal ball says many years of competitive sailing are ahead for this growing fleet of craft. The local fleet started out as a lockdown project for a small group on Orcas Island under the code name J-Pod, paying tribute to the local orca family group in the area. A handful of small regattas were held in 2020 and 2021 and attracted a lot of attention as the fleet stayed true to its roots and mission, welcoming anyone who wanted to participate. Several boats migrated to Lake Washington as the world began to open, and people returned to their lives on the mainland. The fleet transitioned from group tuning and practice sessions to formal racing in late 2022, thanks to the huge support of Corinthian Yacht Club, which hosted a handful of races out of Leschi Marina. Fast forward to 2023, when the fleet had a full season with 13 boats competing on throughout the summer. Additionally, the fleet took the show on the road, making solid appearances at the Puget Sound Spring Regatta, Anacortes Race Week, PITCH, and the Puget Sound Sailing Championships. Beyond the formal regattas, it was common to see two or three boats out on the water most weekends, tuning and practicing to sharpen their skills for the next major event. Just this year, racers from the local fleet took part in events in Florida, Italy, France, and 68

Switzerland, all in the J70 class, and did not embarrass themselves. At last count, over 40 boats between the Seattle, Orcas Island, and Hood River fleets make up the Northwest Fleet 17. Over 100 people are active in the fleet's WhatsApp group chat that’s full of banter and enthusiasm by boat owners and crew. The J70 is the most popular sailboat in the world, with nearly 2,000 built in the past ten years and active fleets in over 30 countries. The recent 2023 J70 World Championship, which was limited by qualification requirements, was held in St Petersburg, Florida, and attracted 84 boats. From Lake Garda in Italy to Puerto Vallarta in Mexico, at least a dozen annual events attracted world-class racing and a ridiculous number of boats. I believe what sets the J70 group apart from many other racing fleets that have come and gone over the years is the openness to support the highest level of competition, while also recognizing club and youth teams. All the significant events are scored overall and separately for the various divisions, with additional club and youth-only regattas dotting the calendar. At its core, the J70 is a mechanism for limitless growth as a sailor and a platform to participate in bucket-list-level sailing adventures all over the world. My wife Shelagh and I have been lucky enough to be involved with sailing in Puget

Sound our entire lives, and we've been active with the local J70 fleet since it began sailing on Lake Washington. We love the community and the openness to share, learn, and progress, all in the name of becoming better sailors and having fun on the water. We had been playing with the idea of getting our own boat, but it felt like a daydream with a young daughter and an already full sailing calendar. Just when we were beginning to move on from that dream, we were quietly offered an opportunity to buy a local J70, already in the water and racing weekly. There were strings attached. First, the current owner got to keep the boat until the end of the season so they could continue to practice for the world championships in the fall, and they were looking for someone who was going to keep the boat local and actively race it. When I asked Shelagh if she thought it was a good idea, she told me to “call them back immediately and say yes.” So, not one to disappoint my wife, we bought the boat. We certainly have our work cut out for us being newcomers to the fleet, but I couldn’t wish for a better group of sailors and friends to compete with and against. With a rumored 17 boats racing in the Lake Washington fleet this coming summer and a handful of weekend regattas bringing the whole Northwest fleet together throughout the summer, the momentum will only build. I’ll be the first to admit that we are drinking the J70 Kool-Aid, but, so far, it tastes pretty good.

Pao Wow The humble Brussels sprout is elevated by a spicy, Sichuan-style kick in this scintillating vegan dish. With the holidays over and the new year making its presence felt, let’s revisit the Brussels sprout. If you’re like me, we saw those cabbage-like buds braised, baked, roasted, and grilled as they graced our holiday table repeatedly. But now that we’re two months into 2024, I feel it’s time we set the seasonal dishes aside so we can transform this bountiful crop into something original. This scintillating dish, with a colorful history, is from The Tropicale Restaurant Cookbook, which I had the pleasure of assembling with Palm Springs-based chef Tony Di Lembo. Try it and you’ll quickly discover the lively recipe is filled with elevated flavor, perfect for your next get-together at home or on the boat. The Kung Pao Brussels sprout story begins in the heart of China’s Sichuan Province, in the provincial capital of Chengdu. This isn’t any ordinary town. It smirks at its reputation for serving strong, pungent, and super spicy foods. Here, everything is laden with dried chilies, handfuls of them, tossed in white-hot woks, so spicy it takes your breath away. A particular spice, the Sichuan peppercorn, is medicinally used in many Chinese potions, but often finds itself in Chengdu’s cuisine. The peppercorn is not spicy hot (there are other chilies for that), but instead has a lemony overtone and creates a tingly numbness in your mouth. Commonly prepared with chicken pieces, shrimp, or even frog’s legs, the star of this Kung Pao is the Brussels sprout, tossed with just a few eye-watering chilies and served with a bowl of steamed rice. This is a vegan salute to classic Sichuan cuisine with a delicious twist that you can enjoy whether you’re in Chengdu or right here in the Pacific Northwest.

Kung Pao Brussels Sprouts with Glazed Peppers & Peanut Ginger Pan Sauce Serves 6 2 pounds Brussels sprouts, outer leaves removed, stems sliced off 5 tablespoons sesame oil, divided Sea salt and fresh cracked black pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons vegetable oil ½ teaspoon Sichuan peppercorns cup salted peanuts 2 leeks, white part only, sliced ¼-inch 1 small red bell pepper, diced ½-inch 1 small green bell pepper, diced ½-inch 1 tablespoon cornstarch 4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced 2 tablespoons ginger, peeled and minced 2 dried chile de arból, lightly crushed 1 tablespoon sambal oelek ½ cup soy sauce 3 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons rice vinegar 4 scallions, sliced ¼-inch on bias, to garnish Steamed rice, optional

Preheat the oven to 425°F. Toss the Brussels sprouts with 3 tablespoons of the sesame oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast in the oven, on a baking sheet, turning once, until just soft and lightly brown, about 20 minutes. Do not overcook. When finished, combine the sprouts with the cooked vegetables in the next step. While the Brussels sprouts are roasting, warm the vegetable oil in a large skillet over high heat. Add the Sichuan peppercorns and peanuts and cook for 1 minute. Add the leeks and peppers and sauté until softened and beginning to color. Adjust the heat to not burn the vegetables. Remove from the heat and add the roasted Brussels sprouts to the skillet. Set aside. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 1 tablespoon water and set aside. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons sesame oil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the garlic, ginger, and chiles, and cook for 2 minutes. Add the sambal and cook for 2 minutes. Add the soy sauce, sugar, vinegar, and ½ cup water. Bring to a boil and stir in the cornstarch slurry. Simmer until the sauce thickens, about 2 additional minutes. Remove from heat and allow to sit for 2 minutes. To serve, heat the skillet with the Brussels sprouts, leeks, and peppers over high heat. Add the sauce and toss until hot. Adjust seasoning with additional soy sauce. Transfer to a serving platter and garnish with the scallions. If you like, serve it with a bowl of steamed rice.
